MADAME LILIAN STILES-ALLEN (1890-1982) CONCERT SOPRANO AND TEACHER

When Lilian Stiles-Allen came to live in Leeds in 1941 escaping the London Blitz, she had a long and distinguished career behind her. She had worked with some of the great conductors and composers of the day, performed on the concert stage, at the Proms, on radio and in recordings. Leeds had been the scene of her first real success and always welcomed her, so she chose it as her new home ‘remembering the city’s music and culture and the kindly hospitality of Yorkshire folk’. While here she coached the young Julie Andrews, who has left us an affectionate memoir of her beloved ‘Madame’. he was born Lilian Elizabeth Allen (later adding her mother’s maiden name of Stiles) in 1890 in Marylebone, London, the daughter of a master butcher – ‘an ordinary family’ she said. As a child she dreamt of being a ballerina, but instead was encouraged to sing. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music, and afterwards in Germany, winning prizes for her rich soprano voice. She had the vocal power and range for opera but not the physique – too short and plump – so she focussed on the concert stage. At first she struggled to find work, even singing in music halls, once on the bill with performing elephants as the star turn (she enjoyed telling this story!) Her first real break came in Leeds in 1915, when she was just 25. In November she sang with the Leeds Choral Union in an Elgar concert conducted by Sir Elgar himself, praised for the golden quality of her voice. She returned in December as a soloist in ‘Messiah’ alongside the formidable Dame Clara Butt, and was picked out by the Yorkshire Post’s influential critic, Herbert Thompson, for her outstanding performance. She never looked back. In December 1917 she was chosen as one of the soloists at a great commemorative concert at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate the heroes of Mons and Ypres, before the King and Queen and Queen Alexandra. At this deeply emotional event (only English music was played) it was she who sang the closing National Anthem, leading the huge chorus. Her voice was much admired for its sweetness, range, and dramatic power. During the 1920s/30s she was in demand as a soloist, performing round the country and appearing in Scotland, Ireland, later in the USA. She specialised in oratorio and operatic arias, and regularly performed

Pictured: Lilian Elizabeth Allen with Julie Andrews

in Sir Malcolm Sargent’s spectacular staged productions of Coleridge-Taylor’s ‘Hiawatha’ at the Albert Hall. From 1923 she featured in early radio broadcasts from 2LO (the original London station), often with Sir Henry Wood at the Promenade concerts. Later she made gramophone recordings with Edison Bell Electron Records, including in 1938 the first recording of Vaughan-Williams’ ‘Serenade to Music’. Small and stout as she was, she had a dramatic style – long skirts, a fabulous velvet cloak and beret, a cane, plenty of jewellery. Her personal life was kept very private. She was married three times –

her first husband almost certainly killed in WW1 leaving her a young widow, like so many others. When she came to live in Leeds it was with her third husband Sidney Jeffries-Harris and a son, Michael. She bought a historic old farmhouse at 19 Shire Oak Road, Headingley, as their new home (now converted into cottages and called Corson Court). She still performed occasionally – for instance at the reopening of the Leeds Museum after it had been bombed – but she focussed now on teaching. Her most famous pupil was the young Julie Andrews who would come up to Headingley to stay with ‘Madame’. She was a rigorous teacher, whose coaching had a great impact on the budding star. In her memoirs ‘Madame’ comes alive – imposing, but also gentle and kind. She remained Julie Andrews’ mentor throughout her early career. Around 1956 Lilian Stiles-Allen moved from Leeds to an earlier home of hers, a country cottage near Sevenoaks in Kent. She generously donated her Headingley house to the privately-run Yorkshire College of Music and Drama which had lost its premises in town; the College remained there until 2011, familiar to many Leeds music students. Lilian Stiles-Allen died in 1982 in Tunbridge Wells, aged 92. But through the magic of the internet, you can still hear her golden voice, singing in the ‘Serenade to Music’ and speaking in an extract from her 1971 BBC interview for ‘Desert Island Discs’.

Leeds College of Art Looks to an Exciting Future

Over the last year, Leeds College of Art has celebrated its 170th Year with a variety of events - from exhibitions and talks, to parties and stunning murals. The College commissioned George Addy, a current BA (Hons) Illustration student, to design a special anniversary mural at Leeds Train Station. The design captured the city’s diverse creative scene, illustrating sculptures by artists like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth (both of whom studied at the College), as well as institutions like, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds College of Art, The Corn Exchange, and Hyde Park Picture House. George and a team of final year students (Melissa Banks, Ian Fulcher, Tilly Butters and Charlotte Curnick) spent a whole day painting the impressive, six-metre mural. There was also a unique, live exhibition of specially made gowns featuring recent alumni artwork and modelled by students wearing gowns with artwork printed on the back representing each of the creative courses that the College offers. The College is looking forward to an exciting future. Plans are in place to become the only specialist arts university in the North of England. A major expansion of its Blenheim Walk site is currently underway, creating a 6,000m2 building to meet the current and future needs of its students. This will allow the College to create a more diverse mix of educational programmes, including film and popular music. Due to be completed by the Summer 2018, the new building will provide the College with an opportunity to engage more with the local and wider communities of Leeds by creating a new entrance, public exhibition gallery, coffee shop and performance theatre.

ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY YEARS IN THE MAKING Leeds College of Art is celebrating 170 years of delivering art education in an independent art school environment with award winning facilities. We offer a range of creative courses at Postgraduate, Undergraduate, Further Education, & Short Course levels. To find out more visit www.leeds-art.ac.uk

Enjoy and Learn Through Contemporary Dance

‘Learning and Participation’ at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance provides access to dance for everyone. Its ethos is to nurture an inclusive and mutually-respectful learning environment, providing a place for participants, of all ages and abilities to enjoy, engage in and learn through contemporary dance.

Last year saw them dance with dads (and the rest of the family) for Leeds’ Dadstastic Day at Leeds City Museum; the Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) students performed at Leeds Corn Exchange as part of BBC Ten Pieces with Phoenix Youth Academy and the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra; and they continued to bring dance workshops to schools across the region, exploring topics from the current curriculum. The team offers a range of classes and courses, from CAT to specially designed programmes for schools and community groups, and professional development for dance artists. NSCD plays an active role in the strategic development of dance in the North and invests in widening participation, outreach and other activities that enable as many people as possible to enjoy dance as audience members and participants. Whether dancing is your passion or you’d like to try something new, the community classes are friendly and aimed at all levels. The team runs weekly classes at NSCD but also offers school workshops, continued professional development (CPD) opportunities for dance artists, a series of master classes for young people, and the ever popular Summer School. bill featuring Red Ladder Theatre’s critically acclaimed one-woman musical drama ‘Wrong-Un’, and ’This Really is Too Much’, feminist comedy/dance at its best, with the up-and-coming Gracefool Collective. ‘Wrong ‘Un’ is a suffragette’s story by Boff Whalley, set in February 1918 where Parliament is poised to grant what the suffragettes have been fighting for – votes for all women. After years of direct action, imprisonment and force-feeding, it seems their time has come. Ella Harris and Kathleen Yore will take on the role of Annie Wilde, the Lancashire mill-girl galvanised by a rousing mixture of injustice, conviction, self-doubt and fear on her journey from schoolroom to prison cell and beyond. Red Ladder champions new writing, particularly that which challenges or agitates, and it is this common ground in questioning power and authority that they share with the raucous, provocative work of dance makers, Gracefool Collective. Gracefool Collective delves into a world of farcical stereotypes and preposterous power struggles. Originally commissioned by Northern School of Contemporary Dance’s ’Northern Connections’ programme, ’This Really is Too Much’ is an outlandish, bold and entertaining genrebusting performance. Two Great Orchestras at Leeds Town Hall

In January, Leeds Town Hall hosts two great orchestras – The Hallé on 14th January with conductor Markus Stenz and horn soloist Laurence Rogers; and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, conducted by Vasily Petrenko and featuring pianist Teo Gheorghiu.

he Hallé will present Mozart’s Symphony No 41, Strauss’s Horn Concerto No 1 and Schumann’s Symphony No 4. Mozart’s Symphony No 41 was his last but perhaps most exciting symphony. It was nicknamed ‘Jupiter’ because of its marchlike imperial nature. Woody Allen claimed in his 1979 film ‘Manhattan’ that “the second movement of the Jupiter Symphony makes life worth living”. But the finale, where he juggles five musical themes that he unites Pictured: Laurence at the very end, is perhaps one of Mozart’s Rogers, Halle Orchestra cleverest pieces of writing. When Strauss composed his first horn concerto aged just nineteen, little did he know it would become the most performed horn concerto of the nineteenth century. The three movements are linked together by entrancing orchestral accompaniment, showcasing the full range of the godfather of the brass family. Originally composed in 1841 as a Symphonic Fantasy, Schumann’s fourth and final symphony wasn’t published until he’d heavily revised it ten years later. The original score was eventually published, championed by Brahms. Now widely performed, this work bridges the classical period and the then emerging romantic style. The Liverpool Philharmonic’s programme features Britten, Schubert/ Liszt and Shostakovich. Taken from his opera ‘Peter Grimes’, Britten’s ‘Four Sea Interludes’ were performed in concerts even before the opera’s premiere. Pictured: Vasily Petrenko Royal They convey the different Liverpool Philharmonic characters of the sea: first we hear ‘Dawn’, where Photo: Mark McNulty still waters are painted by

soaring violins; ‘Sunday Morning’ brings the hustle and bustle of the seaside town; then ‘Moonlight’ with other worldly swells of the moonlit ocean; and finally ‘Storm’, a dramatic and powerful ending. ‘The Wanderer Fantasy’ is considered Schubert’s most technically demanding composition for piano. Here we hear Liszt’s popular transcription of the work for piano and orchestra. Shostakovich’s Symphony No 12 was dedicated to Lenin. The first movement quotes revolutionary songs and motifs from Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. The second shows Lenin’s countryside quarters, the third recounts the shots that triggered the revolution and the fourth entitled ‘The Dawn of Humanity’ draws the symphony to a close, combining a funeral march with a jubilant celebratory theme. Northern Ballet Presents World Première of Casanova Northern Ballet has gained an enviable reputation for creating strikingly emotional and dramatic narrative dance theatre. Its next new production, ‘Casanova’, will have its world première at Leeds Grand Theatre in March and is set to enhance that reputation even further. ommissioned by Artistic Director David Nixon, ‘Casanova’ will be the first full-length ballet by award-winning choreographer Kenneth Tindall. Set in 18th century Venice, it tells the story of Giacomo Casanova, the infamous Italian adventurer, who led a controversial life, consumed by his desires. He dabbled in careers as violinist, alchemist, spy and church cleric and had a particular penchant for gambling and women. His exploits lead him into a whirlwind of scandal and excess, leading to imprisonment and exile.

Kenneth started researching the show about a year ago, contacting Ian Kelly, actor/playwright, Casanova biographer and 18th Century specialist. “Obviously the Casanova story is too vast to tell in its entirety”, said Kenny. “Casanova wrote 12 volumes of memoirs, but I didn’t want it to be an old man’s memoirs. Working with Ian we have been able to cherry pick some of the best bits, show a side of him that had not been widely represented, and experience this man in a different way. This is a true story that is so sensational you won’t believe it’s real – it shows Casanova as so much more than the infamous lover we know. “It has been exciting to work with Ian, to bring someone in from the world of theatre, and to learn what we could and couldn’t do, breaking some rules along the way.” This will be one of the biggest shows Northern Ballet has ever staged. Kenneth is working with awardwinning costume designer Pictured: Christopher Oram, who Kenneth is currently working on Tindall ‘Frozen’ on Broadway – again

a fresh approach working with someone from theatre. Chris is also an 18th Century specialist. As we go to press the costumes are being prototyped, styles settled upon and fabrics chosen. Inspired by the period, when styles were rich and heavy, Chris has had to also take the movement of the dancers into account. For the music, Kenneth commissioned Los Angeles-based modern classical and film composer Kerry Muzzey who recently wrote the score for the documentary film ‘The Seer’ produced by Robert Redford and Terrence Malick, and whose piece ‘Looking Back’ was a recurring theme on the TV show ‘GLEE’. Together they have poured over the story scene by scene via Skype, discussing various themes for the different characters. The whole production promises to be visually and aurally stunning. “I am delighted to give Kenneth the opportunity to create his first full-length ballet with the Company where he spent the majority of his performing career and where he first began to choreograph”, said David

Nixon. “Casanova’s story is one of sex, romance, intrigue and scandal and I am looking forward to surprising our audiences and challenging the idea of Casanova as nothing more than a prolific lover.” Kenneth Tindall’s previous credits for Northern Ballet include one-act ballets Project #1, Luminous Juncture and The Architect. He was nominated for Best Classical Choreography and Emerging Artist Award at the 2015 National Dance Awards, and recently collaborated with celebrated artist Linder Sterling and the British Art Show on Children of the Mantic Stain. Casanova will be at Leeds Grand Theatre from 11th – 18th March. Tickets available from 0844 848 2700 or leedsgrandtheatre.com

The Playhouse Presents Another Packed Programme for Spring/Summer 2017 West Yorkshire Playhouse’s Spring/Summer season brings together the city’s urgent and intimate stories, creating collaborations with exciting creative talent from across the UK, staging fresh new work alongside celebrated classics. he season opens with Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion (4 - 25 Feb), a radical, new co-production with Headlong and Nuffield Southampton Theatres exploring one of the most celebrated comedies of the 20th century. Director Sam Pritchard scrutinises class identity and social mobility in a digital era and asks how much our voices still define who we are. Amy Leach’s Romeo and Juliet (3 – 25 March) captures the impact of raging intergenerational conflict and social unrest as an extraordinary first love ignites amid a vicious turf war on a present day Northern estate. The Barber Studio Programme (30 March –15 April) is small in scale but big in ambition and includes award-winning shows by leading northern artists and brand new theatre, developed at the Playhouse. Transform (19 - 22 April) festival is back and bolder than ever with extraordinary shows and ideas by adventurous artists investigating what the future holds and

reinventing it.

The Graduate (28 April - 27 May) is a co-production by The Playhouse and Curve Leicester. An illicit encounter with an infamous older woman sets the three main characters on a thrillingly destructive course in Lucy Bailey’s moving and hilarious coming-of-age production. Lifeboat (2 - 13 May), directed by Gill Robertson, is the gripping story or two young evacuees left clinging to an upturned lifeboat. Catherine Wheels Theatre Company will tour the production to community settings across Leeds. Grapes of Wrath (24 May - 10 June), based on John Steinbeck’s classic novel, captures an American family in a moment of crisis as their farm crops turn to dust before their eyes and they set off to California in the hope of survival and prosperity. Ode to Leeds (10 June – 1 July) celebrates the journey to New York City of five young poets from Leeds to compete in the world’s most prestigious poetry slam, but personal pressures and bitter in-fighting

threaten to pull the team apart. James Brining directs this poignant portrayal of Leeds by Zodwa Nyoni. Directed by Bijan Sheibani, Inua Ellams’ new play Barber Shop Chronicles (12 - 29 July) invites audiences into barbershops across Africa and the UK in a humorous and insightful portrayal of a unique environment where black men come to be together. “This season is an artistic reflection and response to the narratives, debates and events that are shaping this City, our nation and the world”, said James Brining, Artistic Director. “We’re exploring moments of discovery of identity, place and voice; moments as proudly distinctive and diverse in their telling as our audiences. “West Yorkshire Playhouse is also championing visionary female directors such as Amy Leach, Abbey Wright and Lucy Bailey. We’re co-creating with leading national companies including Headlong and the National Theatre and, most importantly, we’re creating a platform for stories from our own streets. “We have stories of self-expression and hope, disempowerment and overcoming. The art that we make happens for and with the people of Leeds – through poetry writing workshops for schools, with the involvement of young people in Romeo and Juliet and by performing our work in community venues around the city.” Of course there is a whole visiting programme too – please visit our website www.northleedslife.co.uk for a brief outline, or www.wyp.org.uk

Pictured: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at Leeds Grand Theatre

Adapted from Mark Haddon’s best-selling book, it tells the story of Christopher Boone (15) who has Asperger’s Syndrome and an extraordinary brain; he is exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. Christopher has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and distrusts strangers but when he is under suspicion for killing Mrs Shear’s dog his detective work takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

The play received seven Olivier Awards in 2013, including Best New Play, Best Director, Best Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design, and five Tony Awards on Broadway including Best Play. “We were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic reception from audiences around the UK and Ireland when we toured ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ in 2014-15 playing to almost 400,000 people”, said Kash Bennett, National Theatre producer. “We are delighted to take this beautiful and inventive show to new venues and make a return visit to others in 2017.” Tickets (£23 - £37) are available from 0844 848 2700 or online at www. leedsgrandtheatre.com

Leeds Arts Centre Presents ‘The Weir’ n an isolated rural pub near Sligo, Brendan, Jack and Jim are enjoying their usual nightly drink, out of the storm raging outside. Their peace is broken by Finbar, an ex-local who has just sold a nearby house to Valerie, a divorcee from Dublin, and is showing her around the area. The men start to tell stories of the local ‘Fairy Folk’, but if they are trying to frighten Valerie they are disappointed. Her reaction stuns them, and she tells them a story more frightening than any of theirs.

The Weir by Conor McPherson won the 1999 Laurence Olivier award for Best New Play. An atmospheric piece, it explores the relationship between the characters and their location in a very compelling way. McPherson’s gift for dialogue and idiom is seldom surpassed and the action of the play draws you in as if you were sitting in the bar yourself. The Leeds Arts Centre production of ‘The Weir’ is at the Carriageworks Theatre, Millenium Square, from 1st – 4th February at 7.30pm. Directed by Ken Taylor, who directed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in their Play for a Nation production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (2016), it promises to be a memorable theatrical experience.

If they are trying to frighten Valerie they are disappointed. She stuns them with a story more frightening than any of theirs

Front Room Productions Present Oliver Twist at Kirkgate Market ront Room Productions Present an original, promenade adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist by Olivia Race in Leeds Kirkgate Market from 10th – 14th January at 7 and 8.30pm. After the death of his mother, orphan Oliver faces the world alone. On escaping his miserable existence in the workhouse, he is taken in by juvenile pickpocket the Artful Dodger. He enters a dark criminal underworld of London thieves, where he meets the loathsome Fagin, vicious Bill Sikes and self-sacrificing Nancy. Depicting Oliver’s struggle between hope and cruelty, Dickens creates an unforgettable world of threat and mystery. With a haunting score composed by Robert Collins, the production will lead

audiences around Kirkgate Indoor Market following the twists and turns of this dramatic re-telling of one of Dickens’ most famous stories, as Victorian England is brought back

to life in the heart of Leeds. Front Room Productions excels in creating innovative theatre in alternative locations, with previous productions in chapels and living rooms. They enjoyed a successful run of an original, fairy-tale inspired musical, The Princes’ Quest, at the Edinburgh Fringe. And following a sell-out run of Oliver Twist in Durham’s Indoor Market in April 2016, the company is delighted to bring this production to Leeds. Leeds Youth Opera Presents Two Fantastic Shows eeds Youth Opera (LYO) will present two wonderful shows in the New Year. LYO has split its members into two age groups – the over-19s will perform Benjamin Britten’s haunting chamber opera ‘Turn of the Screw’ in January; and the under-19s will perform ‘Les Miserables’ (schools edition) in February. The ‘Turn of the Screw’ is a ghost story like no other; a tale of good versus evil, natural versus supernatural, corruption versus innocence, with music that creates an overwhelming feeling of intense claustrophobia. Its dramatic power has a shattering impact. Set against the backdrop of 19thcentury France, ‘Les Misérables’ tells a

story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice, revolution and redemption. It is the story of Jean Valjean, a prisoner who breaks parole, and the police inspector who hunts him down, and is set in a world that is wretchedly poor, during a student uprising. Leeds Youth Opera brings together young people with an interest in singing who wish to improve their singing skills, gain confidence, and create dramatic characters through opera and musical theatre. They work with a professional artistic team in a friendly and enjoyable way. “This season will give some of our younger members the opportunity to take on principal parts, and will give our

older members the experience of singing some very difficult and emotionally challenging material”, said Anita Adams, Artistic Director. “It was time for us to try something different and our audiences will not be disappointed.” LYO creates an orchestra of top young musicians from in and around Leeds for each performance. The quintet ‘North Winds’ will join LYO for ‘Turn of the Screw’. ‘Turn Of The Screw’ runs from 18th – 21st January; ‘Les Miserable’ from 8th – 12th February, both at The Carriageworks Theatre. Leeds Receives Award for Innovative Work Supporting Refugees An innovative Leeds City Council project providing a wide range of support to refugees and migrants, recently received a prestigious European award. n claiming the EuroCities’ ‘Participation’ Award, the Leeds Migrant Access Project (MAP) was praised for its work in empowering migrant communities to support themselves, harnessing their skills, knowledge and commitment. Representing 130 cities across Europe, judges of the Eurocities network, which aims to improve people’s quality of life by sharing knowledge and good practice, reserved special praise for how the city has worked with refugees and partners to promote community cohesion. Developed in partnership with the council’s commissioning team, Touchstone Community Development Service and Feel Good Factor, MAP provides a living map that gives refugees and migrants up-to-date information on the services that are available in their communities. Trained people from migrant communities, who speak English as well as a range of community languages, lead on this work. This not only benefits refugees and migrants, but also helps services provide effective support, and reduces the number of people going to the wrong service or not getting any support at all. It provides an opportunity to talk to those affected, learn what they need and develop community-led solutions.

In submitting their nomination for the ‘Participation’ Awards, the Council was asked to submit a short video of its work. The video (bit.ly/ leedsmapfilm) shows refugees and migrants from Leeds’ groups, such as The Syrian Kitchen, talk positively of local integration, learning new skills, becoming self-sustaining and supporting others throughout the community. “We are extremely proud and honoured to win this EuroCities’ ‘Participation’ Award”, said Cllr Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council. “MAP is a great example of the type of innovative work being undertaken by the council in a range of different services. I would like to thank all the partners in the city for their tremendous vision and creativity in putting together this project, but mostly to thank the volunteers from these communities who put so much effort into supporting each other and making Leeds such a great city to live in. I am sure the MAP project will be looked at closely by many other cities in Europe through the winning of this award.” Further information on MAP, visit bit.ly/leedsmapblog.

his year Barnardo’s is celebrating twenty years of Futures, its supported lodgings service which was established in 1996 to provide homes for care leavers aged 16-21. Futures provides supported lodgings for vulnerable young people (not just care leavers) who are in need of support, who are not ready to live independently, and who are often referred through social care. Their needs are carefully matched with the skills of the lodgings providers that the service recruits, trains and supports ordinary people who are able to offer accommodation in their own homes. “We are so proud that we have been able to work with young people

New Bench Commemorates World War One in Allerton Grange Fields Thanks to funding from Moortown councillors Sharon Hamilton, Rebecca Charlwood and Alex Sobel, and Roundhay councillors Eleanor Tunnicliffe, Christine Macniven, and Ghulam Hussain, a new memorial bench commemorating the fallen has been installed in Allerton Grange Fields.

ouncillors used their MICE money (Members Improvements in the Community and the Environment) to fund the bench which is decorated with images of soldiers from the Great War and adorned with red poppies. The councillors unveiled the bench alongside members of the local community and remembered the huge sacrifice made during World War One, as well as the sacrifices service men and women continue to make today. “Over the years, many of our residents have served their country and we will never forget the sacrifice they made”, said Councillor Sharon Hamilton. “The bench will serve as a visible reminder to present and future generations of the debt that we owe those who served our country during the First World War, as well as offering a place for residents to reflect and remember.”

News From Your Councillors Cllr

DAN COHEN Alwoodley

Take a deep breath …. and relax! The very strange year that was 2016 is over and you’ve survived – that alone is worth a cheer! In a year that has seen many famous faces pass away, Leicester City win the premiership, the UK vote to leave the EU, Donald Trump elected as the US president, David Cameron retire from politics, Jeremy Corbyn remain in his post and

The Avenue finally being resurfaced ... it is safe to say it really has been a strange old year. Turning to matters festive, may I congratulate and thank Alwoodley Parish Council, not just for the superb work it does throughout the year, but also for the ‘lit trees’ that mark out the Parish and brighten the place up on the long winter nights. It’s a good time too to thank the many hundreds of amazing volunteers, right across the ward, who do so much, for so many. I am constantly humbled and amazed by your efforts. In Bloom Groups, MaeCare Volunteers, Guiding and Scout Leaders, Friends of our Woods, the list could cover the page. To each and every one of you thank you. You will by now have received an update from Leeds City Council, giving you the details of bin collection times over the coming weeks. If you need to double check changes to your own collection, visit my webpage http://democracy.leeds.gov. uk/mgMiniSite.aspx?UID=2633. You will find all the collection day changes there. I

have also listed the web addresses for the public consultations currently underway in relation to Leeds City Council Ward Boundaries and the Parliamentary Constituencies for the Westminster Parliament, should you wish to take part. Alwoodley is not proposed to change, nor is the number of Leeds City Councillors. On balance, the proposals are sensible, however it is worth having a look and taking the opportunity to comment. In terms of the parliamentary seat, the main proposed change is that, in addition to Moortown, Roundhay and Chapel Allerton, our constituency will also take in Headingley. Whether this means our MP will get automatic membership of the cricket ground remains to be seen. Again, this is your chance to comment, so follow the link and use this opportunity to voice your opinion. Have a great month and a Happy and Healthy 2017.

This is a time of year when residents often raise concerns about people sleeping rough in our city. I thought it would be helpful to explain what Leeds City Council does to help the homeless and what you can do if you see someone you are concerned about. The Leeds Housing Options Service has a specialist Mortgage and Tenancy Advice Service offering housing advice, including negotiation with lenders and landlords, to help people keep their homes. There is also the Homeless Prevention Fund which helps to cover the cost of bonds or rent that may need to be paid in advance to help people secure private rented accommodation. Leeds also has a long-standing Sanctuary scheme, which helps people

who have experienced domestic violence to safely live in their existing homes. The council runs a Youth Mediation service to help young people reconcile differences with their parents so that they can return home. You may have seen the council’s Street Outreach Service at work in the city centre. The service carries out night time street sweeps to find rough sleepers and find emergency accommodation for any person who needs it whilst we find longer-term housing options. For more information about Leeds’ Housing Support Services please call 0113 224 412. You can report anyone rough sleeping online. Just visit www.streetlink.org.uk or call 0300 500 0914. As ever, if you have any concerns or local issues that you’d like to discuss please contact me or my fellow Roundhay councillors, Christine Macniven and Ghulam Hussain.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch The next RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch will take place from 28th – 30th January 2017. This is the biggest event of its kind in the world, with over half a million households taking part every year. It is a chance for you to find out which birds visit your garden, and also to contribute to a piece of ‘citizen science’, helping the RSPB and other organisations monitor the health and welfare of our wildlife.

ardens cover an estimated ten million acres, the equivalent size of five million football pitches, a space bigger than all of the country’s nature reserves combined. Each one can make a difference to wildlife, from providing nectarrich plants, to bird boxes, ponds and feeders. In 2016, the most commonly seen birds were the House Sparrow, Starling, Blue Tit, Blackbird and Woodpigeon. The fortunes of different birds have changed over the 37 years since the BGBW first began. We’ve lost more than half our House Sparrows and about three-quarters of our Starlings. But it isn’t all doom and gloom. Blue Tit numbers have risen by 20% and the Woodpigeon population has increased by a whopping 800%. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, all you have to do is either visit the RSPB website and use the online counting tool to enter the birds and animals you see over a period of one hour during the weekend, or record your sightings with pen and paper, and send the results to the RSPB. Only record the highest number of any species that you see at one time, not the total over the hour, or some individuals may get recorded more than once. If you don’t have a garden, you can record the birds and animals in your local park or any other green space. For more information, visit www.rspb.org.uk/ birdwatch

FILM

REVIEW

PATERSON DIRECTED BY: JIM JARMUSCH STARRING: ADAM DRIVER, GOLSHIFTEH FARAHANI, BARRY SHABAKA HENLEY

CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 118 MINS im Jarmusch, that hip maestro of the droll and understated, has done what he does best here and turned in a last minute entry for my list of favorite films of 2016. This is a gentle, meditative slice of life picture that is a pure, uncomplicated pleasure to watch. Adam Driver plays Paterson, a bus driver in Paterson, New Jersey (the fact he shares a name with his hometown is just one of those quirky coincidences) and the film follows him over the course of a week as he goes about his daily life. Paterson’s world is one of routine with little variation. Each day he wakes around the same time, walks to the bus depot, drives his shift after which he returns home to his beautiful wife, Laura (a delightful performance by Golshifteh Farahani). Later in the evening Paterson takes their bulldog, Marvin, for a walk around the neighborhood, stopping off for beer at a local bar where he shares easygoing banter with the owner and fellow regulars. Throughout his day Paterson writes poetry, jotting down in a notebook his musings on life’s minutiae and the unassuming beauty of the everyday. Laura, believing Paterson to be a great undiscovered talent, encourages him to try and publish, to get his poems out into the world but he seems content with writing for its own sake. Laura, meanwhile, pursues a number of her own creative outlets

Paterson draws our attention to the subtle poetic beauty of the everyday

including interior decorating, baking, custom fashion and her latest passion; learning the guitar and following her dream of becoming a country singer. The mutual support and appreciation the couple share regarding their respective artistic lives is one of the many touching features of the film. There are films in which things happen and then there are films which happen to you, which, without the momentum of narrative thrust or a dramatic hook, have the effect of a wave washing over you rather than forcing you to the edge of your seat. As with much of the director’s work, Paterson is clearly in the latter category. I don’t think any of Jarmusch’s films could ever be described as ‘action packed’. That’s not to say, however, that watching these kinds of films is an entirely passive endeavor, they can provide an immersive experience and an insightful observation of the human condition if one can recalibrate the expectations we have of mainstream cinema entertainment. Yes, very little of note actually happens in Paterson but, like the film’s central character, the viewer quickly becomes reconciled to this fact and is fine with it. Watching Paterson one finds themselves relieved that nothing much

is happening, so seductive is the film’s amiable charm. They say that drama is conflict. Well, there’s little of either to be found here. In terms of dramatic high points or moments of fraught tension; let’s see … Paterson’s bus breaks down at one point, elsewhere there’s an almost instantly diffused barroom altercation, but generally Paterson’s life goes on in its pleasantly acceptable, mostly unremarkable way. As I’ve said, due to cinematic conventions we’re preconditioned to expect certain things from movies; if we see a repetitive routine we assume therein lies simmering frustration and resentment against which the protagonist will surely rebel, if we’re shown a warm, loving relationship we suspect this can’t be the whole story and trouble in paradise is bound to be on the way. Much of our time in the cinema is spent waiting for the other shoe to drop. Refreshingly, Paterson upends our assumptions and sidesteps cliché by saying simply “what you see is what you get”. Suitably for a film with poetry at its heart, through tone, pacing and deft direction, Jarmusch imbues the picture with a lyrical lightness that approaches the sublime. I’ve long considered Adam Driver a rising talent to keep an eye on and this is surely some of his best work to date. His Paterson is portrayed with a zen-like sense of stoicism and calm, a performance so unforced, so natural and free of contrivance, and of such appealing humanity that it effortlessly and invitingly draws the audience into its world. After a truly horrendous year marked by numerous deaths of the great and good and harrowing political and social tumult, Paterson; a film that draws our attention to the subtle poetic beauty of the everyday, in which people treat one another with kindness and where nothing terrible happens, is really a tonic. It feels like the film we need right now.

Leanne Nails It as Michael McIntyre’s Unexpected Star When Leanne Jeffers headed to London with a friend she had no idea what was in store for her! Little did she know that her scheming husband and lying friends had arranged for her to be the Unexpected Star on Michael McIntyre’s Big Show!

I’m eternally grateful to Michael Mcintyre for believing in my potential and for the amazing experience he gave me – even though he did give me the shock of my life!

n the run up to the big reveal Leanne and her friend sipped cocktails in a fake bar where Shane Filan (ex Westlife) just happened to drop in and invite them to the club next door as his guests! Down a corridor and past the waiting queue and suddenly OMG! There she was in front of thousands of people. Leanne was amazingly cool and seemed to take it all in her stride. At the end of the show she sang a beautiful rendition of ‘You’ll never Walk Alone’ to rapturous applause. Leanne grew up in the Stonegate Road area of Moortown and attended Carr Manor Primary and Allerton High, where she started her musical journey. She was a member of the orchestra at Carr Manor and sang in every show possible at Allerton High. Currently she sings around the Yorkshire area as a solo singer in bars, clubs and private venues and is also part of the Singing Waiters, which she really enjoys. “After my performance on Michael Mcintyre’s Big show I had some amazing feedback”, said Leanne. “I was doing interviews for radio and newspapers all week! And, I was stopped in the street too, which is such a strange feeling. I’m eternally grateful to Michael Mcintyre for believing in my potential and for the amazing experience he gave me – even though he did give me the shock of my life!” To view more visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weZfjGpXQDM.

‘Spellbinding’ Singer to Perform for a Great Cause

Tom is back for a handful of concerts and sounding better than ever, thanks to Dave Bowie’s inventive double bass and Ross Bennett’s delightful guitar and vocals

olksinger Tom Bliss toured the UK to much acclaim during the noughties but retired from music in 2009 to study sustainability. Now he’s returning to the stage to campaign for Multiple Sclerosis. Tom has devoted his years away from performing and recording to climate change related roles at both Leeds universities. Last year his daughter was diagnosed with MS, a devastating neurological condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. “It’s terrible to see your own laid low by a currently incurable disease”, said Tom. “But it seems a breakthrough is tantalising close, and the MS Society has been both a godsend and lifeline. My son-in-law raised thousands by undertaking mammoth walks – which gave me the idea of performing some benefit gigs.” Appearing under the name ‘Tom Bliss and the Burning Bridges’ (which

gently mocks his retirement), he’s back for a handful of concerts and sounding better than ever, thanks to Dave Bowie’s inventive double bass and Ross Bennett’s delightful guitar and vocals. Tom will be performing at Inkwell, Chapel Allerton, on 7th January 6:30pm, The Black Swan York, on 14th January, and the New Headingley Club on 11th February both at 8:30pm. All gigs are ‘pay as you feel’ for the MS Society. Further details at www.tombliss.co.uk

Carers Leeds Wins HSJ Award Carers Leeds, with Leeds City Council and Leeds Clinical Commissioning Groups, has won the CCG & Local Authority Integrated Commissioning for Carers Award, sponsored by NHS England at the 2016 HSJ Awards.

he Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards, is the largest celebration of healthcare excellence in the UK, highlighting the most innovative and successful people and projects in the sector. By shining a spotlight on cutting-edge innovation and best practice, the awards give impetus to improving the quality of health care in the UK. After a review by judging panels made up of senior figures from the health sector, Carers Leeds were recognized for their outstanding work. The judges commented: This project is a clear demonstration of how a collaborative,

sustainable intervention works and how it could be adapted and adopted at scale, across systems and in a range of settings. “In this year of unremitting toil and increasing pressure, the entries to the HSJ Awards have again touched record levels”, said Alastair McLellan, Editor, HSJ. “Becoming an HSJ Awards finalist has never been tougher or more worthy of celebration. The excellence represented demonstrates that the NHS remains both brave and bold in meeting the challenges that rising demand presents for all modern healthcare systems. It also underlines the ambition found in every sector and region of the NHS to improve patient outcomes, experience and safety.”

Roundhay Parkrun Raises Funds for Defibrillators Roundhay parkrun has raised over £1,000 from general donations and the parkrun community to buy a defibrillator for use at Roundhay pakrun. Sports clubs like Valley Striders Athletic Club, Valley Striders Cycling club and Roundhay Runners have all donated towards this excellent initiative and the local community has also been really supportive. The club has already purchased one defibrillator, which will form part of parkrun’s standard equipment, and is planning to buy a second, which will be accessible at the cricket pavilion in Roundhay Park for use by any member of the community in the event of a heart attack. “We’re absolutely delighted that we have been able to contribute to the local community so positively”, said Roundhay parkrun’s Alex Watson-Usher. “Access to a defibrillator in the park for the benefit of both parkrunners and the wider community will provide a safeguard in the event that the worst did happen. We also hope that the increased presence of defibrillators in public places will raise awareness of their importance and be a step towards them being as commonplace as other lifesaving devices, such as fire extinguishers.” Roundhay parkrun, a free event, is held at Roundhay Park every Saturday morning at 9am, attracting around 250 runners each week. It’s a very popular and inclusive event and one in which many families from North Leeds take part.

New Project Addresses Alcohol Use Among the Over-60s

Research has shown that over 60s are increasingly at risk of feeling isolated and without purpose after retirement and risk becoming

depressed. This can lead to an increase in alcohol consumption. Middle-aged people are three times more likely to drink every day than younger people and preventing alcohol related diseases is one of the NHS Leeds North CCG’s priorities. Resilient not Reliant allows people concerned about their alcohol intake to access support in a friendly and non-judgmental environment, so they can re-engage with the community and take on positive challenges. It has helped people become involved with volunteering, attend art classes, experience opera, access benefits, attend dance classes, and get out more.

Nationally, Royal Voluntary Service supports over 100,000 older people, helping them to remain independent in their own homes with tailor-made solutions. Through its volunteers, the charity runs services like Good Neighbours, Meals-onWheels, and Books-on-Wheels. It also provides practical support for those who have been in hospital through its On Ward Befriending and Home from Hospital services. Keepin g Your Eyes on the Prize Making Physical Activity Look and Feel Easier

Starting a fitness program is a ubiquitous New Year’s resolution, often accompanied by motivational slogans like ‘pump some iron’, ‘pound the pavement’, ‘no pain, no gain’ and ‘feel the burn’. The reality is that in just about every walk of life, ‘feeling the burn’ is probably the last thing you want to do, and will often require medical intervention once achieved! We are forever being told how to train like Usain Bolt or Jessica Ennis-Hill, but why would you want too? Even elite level athletes don’t train like that all year round. So rather than thinking in terms of Olympic achievement, we should just try to walk before we can sprint.

The New Year brings the best of intentions to stick to new exercise regimes. We tell ourselves ‘this is my year to get back in to shape’. But our new year’s resolutions are often broken before they really begin, leaving us befuddled as to how to start and maintain any newly acquired exercise behaviours. We are bombarded with tips about how to do it but, let’s face it, if they worked, we wouldn’t be making the same resolution year after year. Why should we even bother? Well, at the required amount and intensity (i.e. moderate to vigorous), physical activity can keep us fit and healthy as we get older, especially when compared to being sedentary (inactive). Doing 150-300 minutes of moderate physical activity each week can even reduce mortality risk by up to 30%. Moreover, just as there are profound physical advantages to being active as we age, there are substantial cognitive advantages too. Daily physical activity is important at all ages, whatever form it takes. Active lifestyles are key to health and longevity. Whether it involves walking, jogging or running is not

important, ambulation generally underpins a healthy society. In terms of what we should be doing, put simply, we should do as much as possible! The general rule of thumb is that something is better than nothing and to a point, more is better still. For most people, activity shouldn’t be about getting great abs and bums. It might be more helpful to focus on having a healthy heart and lungs! In many instances, our minds eye can work against us achieving our goals. Some people see exercise as being more difficult and the finish line as further away than others. For an exercise regime to be successful, it needs to foster positive emotions. Focusing on past successes and playing to your strengths are great ways to do this. Achieving your exercise goals relies on (i) establishing habits and (ii) an acceptance that habits take time to develop. Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet or pill, but there are a few things you can do to give yourself a fighting chance of maintaining that exercise regime long after the last of the Christmas turkey has gone.

Top New Year’s Exercise Tips – • Start at the beginning – I am reliably informed that it is a very good place to start! Begin with something you find relatively easy and enjoyable, you can always build on your progress. • Moderation – As much as we need to moderate our unhealthy behaviours, it’s also important to temper our desires for the seemingly healthy ones. Don’t overdo it and burn yourself out! This means realistic goal setting and keeping what you do varied and fun. • Try to make it a social occasion – One thing you can be certain of is that you won’t be alone in wanting to get more active in January. This is an opportunity to find likeminded people to share your journey. The ‘Leeds Let’s Get Active’ programme delivered by Leeds City Council could be a great place to start.

For an exercise regime to be successful, it needs to foster positive emotions • Monitor your progress – Once you do make headway, your only real job is to maintain the momentum. Keeping a record of what you have done is a vital part of the exercise jigsaw. You should routinely reflect on how far you have come, and don’t forget to celebrate your milestones, however big or small. By Stephen Zwolinsky. Stephen is a researcher in the School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University who recently led a study (published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health), which suggests reducing sedentary time and increasing light intensity activity as a more realistic and achievable goal for the long-term inactive.

Put that Resolution Down on Paper! To avoid feeling disappointed and frustrated with yourself when you fail to stick to that New Year resolution, personal fitness trainer Patrick Douglas’s advice is to set a goal, write it down and include the date you want to achieve it by. Then, put the piece of paper somewhere prominent like the fridge door so you won’t forget it. “If it’s a fitness or weight loss goal, then take small progressive steps”, said Patrick. “Food wise, try to cook freshly prepared food as often as you can. Ensure you get a decent breakfast every morning, preferably including some protein, and avoid takeaways ,as you can’t control how much salt, fat or carbohydrates are in the meal. “Exercise-wise, begin steadily if you haven’t done any for a long time. Start with walking and gradually extend your routes and build up the duration. “I’ve worked with a wide range of clients over the years to help them with weight loss, general fitness, injury rehabilitation, core fitness and sport-specific requirements. No two clients ever get given the same programme. Everyone is different and their fitness requirements need to be approached on an individual basis to suit their specific needs.” For further information,Call 0783 350 7985 or Email LeedsFitnessTrainer@ntlworld.com

Treating the Cause of Pain & Injury – A Whole Body Approach

Martin Higgins has 19 years’ experience in treating people who have experienced pain or injury, working in both private practice and professional sport, including rugby and European tour golf. For the last five years Martin has studied an American approach to treating the cause of pain and injury, called Postural Restoration. This treatment uses specific exercises to restore proper alignment and orientation to the body. “I’m really proud, that in 2015, I became the first person in Europe to become certified in Postural Restoration. This is a powerful approach that addresses the true cause of the problem, benefitting both patients and professional athletes. I work closely with each individual and tailor the treatment to address their specific pain or injury, I don’t treat symptoms. It means I can now help patients and athletes that I couldn’t have done in the past. I’ve had fantastic results in my clinic with my patients and athletes.” For further information about how Postural Restoration could help you, call the Chapel Allerton clinic on 0113 347 0248 or atinfo@martinhigginsclinic.co.uk

Get Fitter & Be More Active with Help from CSPC

Our bodies are very good at adapting and compensating in order to cope with what life throws at us, from minor strains, pregnancy, or poor working postures such as sitting at a desk too long. However, there is a limit to how much the body can adapt without resulting in pain and stiffness.

Avoiding certain activities, changing the way we do them or resting up can help in the short term, but if the actual causes are not addressed these symptoms will often return and put a stop to your New Year health and fitness resolutions. Physiotherapy is not just for when you are experiencing pain, injury, or recovering from surgery. The team at CSPC Physiotherapy is highly skilled in assessing how people move and at working out ways to improve this, thereby reducing the risk of injury and allowing you to continue doing what you physically enjoy. They take pride in providing a quality service for all their clients, using the experience they have gained in treating elite athletes. The one hour appointments allow the physiotherapists enough time to assess you from head to toe, find the root cause of your condition, provide hands-on treatment and send you away with an individualised exercise programme. It is their goal to get you back to your best as quickly as possible, with the aim of seeing an improvement within three appointments. CSPC Physiotherapy is based at The Coach House, 184.Otley Road, Leeds, LS16 5LW. 0113 2750606, www.cspc.co.uk

Younger Life

Rose Court Delights Headingley Hall Residents

hildren from Rose Court, the Nursery and Pre-prep of The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), recently performed a Nativity play and invited Headingley Hall Care Home residents, including John and June. “I’m lost for words at what these youngsters can do”, said John, “and grateful to everyone for organising getting us here.” The school has a special relationship with Headingley Hall and the whole audience was delighted with the mix of traditional carols, the Christmas story, and familiar nursery rhyme tunes. Rose Court choir also planned to visit Headingley Hall to sing carols for the residents. “We’ve been taking children to visit at Headingley Hall to sing for the residents for the last four years”, said music teacher Mrs Chris Turner. “The children always amaze me; they are so natural and interact very well.” “We love having this link with Rose Court and welcoming the children to Headingley Hall”, said carer Jack Clarke, who brought John and June to the school. “The children can’t wait to chat and ask questions, and learn lots talking with our residents about the past.”

A Showcase of Young Musical Talent at The Venue

usic teacher Jane Barrow is organising a concert on Saturday 28th January, 2pm at The Venue, Leeds College of Music, to showcase the talent of around 30 of her past and present students. Ranging from those relatively new to playing the piano, through to those post Grade 8, and some who are now perusing music as a career, it should be an entertaining afternoon. There will be many different genres of music, including Naomi Adams (16) who will play and sing her own composition. There will also be vocal, guitar and acoustic sets from other students. Jane has been a private piano tutor for over 25 years. As a child she performed widely and won the under 16 piano section on the programme Junior Showtime for three consecutive years. In recent years, she noticed a lack of opportunity for young pianists to experience the thrill of a live performance and to develop their confidence and skill, so she is thrilled to be arranging this concert at such a great venue with its two beautiful Steinway pianos. Tickets (£8/£5) are available from Leeds College of Music Box Office on 0113 222 3434 or online.

Allerton Grange Raises Over £1,300 for Children in Need llerton Grange School’s Year 10 Student Council organised a variety of events to raise money for Children in Need 2016, and raised over £1,300. One of the most popular events was where students could nominate a member of staff to get soaked in assemblies over that week. Progress and Welfare Manager for Year 7, Miss Green and Progress and Welfare Coach, Miss Smith, faced their soaking together. Acting Head of Drama, Mr Hasslegreen, wore a full wet suit and had an entire bucket of water thrown over him! Key Stage 4 Progress and Welfare Leader Mrs Davies, was nominated by Year 10. Not even head teacher Mr Roper escaped. The teachers were all good sports and happy to help raise money for a good cause.

The school is currently fundraising to replace the old school minibus. If you would like to contribute, visit EasyFundraising.co.uk. By supporting Allerton Grange’s cause on this website, you can shop at other online retailers and a percentage will go into the fundraising pot.

Schools Look Forward to a Successful 2017 Schools all over Leeds are looking forward to a successful 2017, to building on the achievements of 2016, welcoming new students, and ensuring that Leeds continues to get excellent results across the whole spectrum of education.

Gateways Proud of its Added Value Rating “Our Year 7 entrance procedure simply seeks to establish an individual child’s ability in comparison to the whole entrance cohort so that we can set our classes appropriately from the outset”, said Dr Tracy Johnson, Headmistress. “It is of much more importance to choose the ‘right’ child for Gateways, and that is not necessarily the brightest child – it is the one who I believe my team will be able to make the most difference to. This may be a very bright child who should be studying triple science for example, but apparent ability is not my primary focus.” The results achieved at Gateways are comparative to those achieved by academically selective schools in the area. Dr Johnson explains why this is, “At Gateways our strength is the value we add to the education of each child. We are able to do this because of our size and ethos. We concentrate on getting to know each pupil individually, stretching them according to their personal strengths, and supporting their weaknesses. We are particularly proud to be the number one school in the country for value added in Maths and Science and number seven for value added across all subjects (CEM Centre, 2016).”

Look to the Future with GSAL Sixth Form

Being aware that universities and employers look for something extra on top of good grades, The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) Sixth Form helps students to stand out from the crowd. With 26 A-level subjects taught by experienced teachers, students certainly have the opportunity to realise their academic potential. Each individual receives outstanding pastoral care in small tutorial groups and expert advice from the dedicated careers and higher education team. And, leavers have an impressive record of getting to where they want to be – 94% of the class of 2016 progressed to higher education. In addition, opportunities for academic enrichment and personal development prepare students for life after school. The Extended Project Qualification and innovative ‘Aspire’ programme, which includes inspirational speakers, taught courses on practical or intellectual topics, and voluntary service, enhances learning and builds confidence in readiness for any challenges ahead. Sixth Form is central to GSAL’s vibrant school community. Richmond House School Achieves Top Grade in All ISI Inspections

Richmond House School in Far Headingley is the leading independent preparatory school for girls and boys aged 3 – 11 with a nurturing, family environment, specialist teaching in a wide range of subjects, and small classes sizes. It consistently enjoys 100% 11+ exam success and is proud to have achieved the top grade of ‘excellent’ in all ISI inspection categories. Located in ten acres of grounds, the school is only three miles outside Leeds city centre, close to teaching hospitals, universities, financial and business districts. It has a great sporting reputation and extensive sports pitches and facilities and is uniquely positioned to be able to deliver top quality sporting opportunities, including rugby, netball, football, cricket and swimming. It also enjoys a strong culture of music and drama and creates opportunities for the whole school to come together to deliver outstanding performances and concerts every year. This year the school choir was invited to perform with the Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir at their Christmas Concert at Wakefield Cathedral for the second time. For further information, or to arrange an appointment, call 0113 275 2670

Christmas will soon be over. Tinsel torn down, the tree back in its box and toys getting under your feet. Toys don’t seem to last two minutes these days, do they? Come the New Year, they’re often broken, lost or unwanted (or driving you up the wall). But what if Christmas presents lasted much longer? If you could give your child something which could help them in the future? You can. Our Friends and Family Junior ISA allows multiple people to donate into a child’s savings account - which, in years to come, could pay towards education, a deposit on a house or even flying lessons! How’s that for a Christmas present to remember? Visit ffjisa.co.uk for more information on Kingston Unity’s Friends and Family Junior ISA.

Important Information: All payments are gifts to the child. Junior ISAs cannot be accessed until the child is 18. The Friends & Family Junior ISA is a stocks & shares ISA that may potentially grow in value by the annual addition of bonuses. However, this cannot be guaranteed. We may apply a penalty on accounts that transfer to other providers before the child reaches 18 and this may result in a loss in capital.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown & Roundhay areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
