DEAR READERS,

are some exciting suggestions for Half Term. Sue Ryder Wheatfields is holding a Vintage Fair; there’s an interesting exhibition on Cooks and Their Books at Leeds Uni; The Natural Food Store in Headingley celebrates ten years as a community owned co-operative; and a community theatre project has just started in Meanwood. And, on to November! Please send all your news and notices to us by 1st October, and advertising by 11th October (1st & 10th November for December edition).

irst of all I must apologise for the glaring mistake in last month’s magazine – ‘They Lived in Leeds’ announced an article about Sir John Hawkshaw when the piece was actually about Charles Jenkinson. John Hawkshaw was in the August edition. We soon discovered that Sir John has a lot of relatives in North Leeds! This month we flag up a number of interesting events, including the reopening of Leeds Art Gallery; the St Gemma’s Leeds Art Exhibition & Sale; the Widescreen Weekend at Pictureville in Bradford; and there

Leeds Art Gallery Re-Opens eeds Art Gallery re-opens on 13th October, having undergone essential repairs to the original roof and the historic Victorian building. It will feature a re-presentation of the collection across the gallery that looks back over 130 years to showcase highlights from the nationally designated collection. The re-opening will also be marked with a major ARTIST ROOMS Joseph Beuys exhibition, and new acquisitions by leading contemporary artists such as American artist Martine Syms and renowned British sculptor Alison Wilding. Beuys (1921 – 1986) was one of the twentieth century’s most important and revolutionary cultural figures. He changed the look and vocabulary of sculpture forever, and helped put German art back on the map after World War II. Adopting the roles of political and social activist and educator, he believed in the healing power and social function of art. He

saw creativity as central to all aspects of human existence. This new exhibition will fill the three main rooms on the ground floor, bringing together sculpture and drawings from the 1950s onwards drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, owned jointly by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate. These works show the strong scientific basis for his art and his pioneering use of materials such as felt, fat, wax and copper, which the artist used for their ability to insulate, protect, transmit and transform. During the renovations, a welcome discovery was a beautiful barrel vaulted glazed roof in one of the first floor galleries, which had remained hidden above a false ceiling for over 40 years! This new gallery will be showing Arena (2000), a major sculpture by Alison Wilding, which is a gift to Leeds from the Contemporary Art Society.

WILSON BARRETT (1846-1904) ACTOR, THEATRE MANAGER, PLAYWRIGHT

n 18th November 1878 the Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House opened its doors for the first time. Almost three thousand people stepped from the dark, cold November evening into the warmth and splendour of its glittering auditorium, richly glowing in crimson and gold, its stunning gilded plasterwork lit by a massive crystal chandelier with over 400 gas jets. The cream of Leeds society was there. After the official speeches the charismatic young manager, the actor Wilson Barrett, stepped forward to welcome the packed audience. Wilson Barrett was already well-known in Leeds. Born William Henry Barrett, the son of an Essex farmer, he had begun his stage career in Halifax in 1864, aged 18, then had tramped over to Leeds to apply to join the company at the Princess Theatre, where he got his first lead roles. The company toured the northern theatres, and in Aberdeen he met and married the well-known actress Caroline Heath, ten years his senior. In the 1870s they acted together in several London productions, while he set up his own touring company. He specialised in popular melodrama – ‘villainy vanquished by

George Grossmith, the playwright W.G.Wills, the painter Atkinson Grimshaw. But in the 1880s, after taking on the management of the Princess’s Theatre in London, they moved to London. This was a period of great professional success for him, notably in the immensely popular melodrama ‘The Silver King’. The power and pathos of his performance in the lead role was much admired, even by the stern critic Matthew Arnold. He starred in other popular hits too, but some of his ventures were less successful and he ran into financial problems. He undertook a number of money-spinning tours in the USA, Canada and Australia, mostly to great acclaim. But he had to face family tragedies too: Caroline’s death after a long illness in 1887, and the later death of two of his five children. harms’ has a long history as a family business dating back to the late 1800s, when George Martin established himself as a plumber’s merchant serving customers in Harrogate, York and Leeds. Years later, a small plumbing business founded by Brian Passmore (Tony & Steve Passmore’s father) became one of its customers. Both businesses grew and developed, with Charms’ focusing on bathroom retail. Charms and Passmore’s More Bathrooms were, in effect, competing with one another. “Charms is similarly a family-run brand synonymous with trust, quality and integrity, so the fit into our stable of companies was perfect”, said Tony Passmore, Passmore’s MD. “We are now bringing 50 years of installation expertise to the table – expanding the service for Charms’ clientele who may have used the company for ‘supply only’.” With a 3,000-sq ft showroom already in place, there was little fit-out work to do in preparation for the recent re-branding. In fact, with Charms’ exclusive rights to supply Laufen Kartell and Roca Inspira products, Passmore has already been able to expand its range under the More Bathrooms umbrella. “We have become the leading bathroom designer and installer in Leeds and the surrounding area, so the acquisition of this well known and respected Harrogate business was a logical step in our on-going expansion”, said Tony. “It signifies our desire to provide a fantastic bathroom experience

to as many Yorkshire customers as possible.” Passmore currently has a £6m turnover and has plans to grow this to £10m in the next three to five years, creating 20 jobs for local fitters, installers and surveying staff in the process. Passmore is a 50-strong company that services customers within a 60-mile radius of its Leeds headquarters. The Group is made up of three core brands – More Bathrooms, More Ability (bathing solutions for people with disabilities) and More Build (turnkey home improvements). Play Bridge in North Leeds xercise keeps you in physical shape, but what about some mental gymnastics too? Bridge is recognised as a great way to keep the brain in trim and it opens up a new social scene at the same time. Recent studies claim that Bridge players remain mentally alert well into their eighties! It works for everyone, whatever your age. For the young, playing bridge in a club environment can provide a rewarding alternative to computer activities. It is included as an option in the skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme, and could be a CV enhancer. Although a good memory is an asset, it is not a pre-requisite – the memory can be trained and Bridge is very good for that, as it fosters powers of concentration at any age! Clubs cater for singles and are not necessarily competitive. There are matches

at various levels, but Social Bridge is exactly that. It is an absorbing game and a good stress reliever. Costs are minimal – no expensive equipment or designer kit. Every deal poses a new problem – and problem solving in Bridge can easily have a knock-on effect in life. Leeds Bridge Club ticks all the boxes. It is a thriving, friendly club, catering for all levels and offering morning, afternoon and evening sessions, with individual lessons priced at £7 per session. A course of ten weekly lessons costs £60 and is structured with easy-paced learning. The Club is located at the Moor Allerton Sports and Social Centre, Stonegate Road, which has excellent facilities and a large car park. Cooks and Their Books ‘Cooks and Their Books: Collecting Cookery Books in Leeds’ is the latest exhibition at the University of Leeds Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery. It highlights the University’s outstanding Cookery Collection of books, papers and objects relating to food, drink and cooking which date from 2,500 BC to the present day. The collection was established in 1939 when Blanche Legat Leigh, a former Lady Mayoress of Leeds, donated her collection of 1,500 historic volumes and manuscripts to Leeds University Library. “This exhibition contains many unique items”, said Dr Stella Butler, University Librarian and Keeper of the Brotherton Collection. “The display will interest anyone interested in in the history of food with its fascinating stories about how what we eat has changed over time.” The exhibition, co-curated by food historians Peter Brears and Dr Eileen

White, showcases the world’s first illustrated cookbook; the first English cookery book ever published outside London; and why a long-forgotten writer dubbed the ‘Queen of Ices’ really deserves the Victorian cookbook crown taken by Mrs Beeton. “Cookbooks aren’t just for cooks”, said Dr White. “They give us an insight into society and into major events in history. They are a vital resource for understanding the way that people live.” Cooks and their Books: Collecting Cookery Books in Leeds, is at the Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery until 31st January, 2018. Hallam Solicitors Have you thought about making a Will?

Most of us take action to generally improve our quality of life – we learn a new language, get fitter and healthier, work less and see friends more. But, making a Will is something that many of us keep putting off.

one of us knows what the future might hold, but we can reduce uncertainty by planning ahead, both for what will happen in our lives, as well as for what we would like to happen when we die. Not making a will can have real consequences for your estate and your loved ones. At best, it could mean your loved ones not benefiting as you would have wished on your death, and at worst, your estate could end up in the hands of the taxman. By making a will, you lose the uncertainty of where your assets might otherwise end up, as you get to specify who

you would like to inherit and what they should receive. Whether single, married or a parent, wills are a key element in estate planning. Without a will, you are unable to control what happens to your assets after death. You could leave your dependents with numerous problems. Surprisingly, the Law Society reports that more than two out of three people have not made a will. Also, managing personal affairs in later life can be more difficult, especially if someone becomes mentally incapacitated. With a Lasting Power of Attorney you can provide control over decisions regarding your financial or

physical/mental wellbeing, by placing that control in the hands of someone you trust. We can discuss what your requirements would be with you and assist in completing the appropriate form of attorney, and we’d be happy to visit you at home, if that is what you’d prefer. Then, when the time arrives for the will to take effect, we can assist with the process of proving it and settling the estate. This will involve obtaining a valuation of the estate and assessing liabilities; completing the relevant accounts and oath (including paying any tax that may be due) and procuring the Grant of Probate (or letters of administration if there is no will) before collecting the assets, settling the debts and distributing the balance in accordance with the will (or the statutory intestacy rules if no will). We have been helping our clients get their affairs in order since 2008 and we would be happy to discuss your individual circumstances and requirements, put in place the necessary documentation and prepare your Power of Attorney and/or will on a fixed fee basis. Knowing what the cost will be at the initial appointment will immediately give you peace of mind. Contact Frank on 0113 228 5306 or frank@hallamsolicitors.co.uk to find out how Hallam Solicitors can help you.

(The Fall of) The Master Builder Poses the Question – ‘What If?’ Pictured: Reece Dinsdale

Henrik Ibsen’s play ‘The Master Builder’ is the inspiration for a new play, ‘(The fall of) The Master Builder’, adapted by award-winning playwright Zinnie Harris and showing at West Yorkshire Playhouse from Saturday 30th September – Saturday 21st October. he idea for the play came about during a conversation between its director James Brining and Playhouse Associate Artist, Reece Dinsdale (who plays the lead in the production), about possible inclusions in the upcoming programme. Initially Reece suggested Ibsen’s ‘The Enemy of the People’, then James counter-suggested ‘The Master Builder’. But ‘The Master Builder’ with a twist. He simply posed the question “What if?” What if the play took a certain strand and ran with it, making it speak more for today?

is The Master Builder

“Zinnie Harris’ adaptation is a mesmeric and gripping exploration of power”, said James. “This retelling of such a classic text feels timely, a contemporary story addressing gender, control and privilege. Zinnie breathes urgency into Ibsen’s female characters, generating terrific energy, tension and jeopardy.” The central character, Halvard Solness, is at the pinnacle of his career. His success is unquestionable, his status undeniable and his newest accolade, the Master Builder Award, is truly admirable. He’s on the precipice of unparalleled greatness when an unexpected visit stirs up memories of the past, which threaten to undermine all he has built. “Reimagining Ibsen’s text has been fascinating and reframing the production for now has given the piece real relevance”, said Zinnie Harris “It’s been a pleasure to create this new and contemporary version that makes for a thrilling adaptation.” We caught Reece just at the beginning of rehearsals and he was still trying to get his head around this difficult, powerful man. “Halvard Solness is a fascinating character - a man standing right on a precipice and staring down into the abyss”, he said. “He’s at the height of his success, being forced to confront his deepest fears. It becomes really uncomfortable. His dread of the ambitious young, the steady decline of his creative powers, and the murky secrets of his past come right to the fore the very moment we meet him.” (the fall of) The Master Builder is designed by Alex Lowde, with lighting by Sinéad McKenna, and sound design by Jon Nicholls. The cast also includes Susan Cookson, David Hounslow, Emma Naomi, Michael Peavoy, Robert Pickavance, and Katherine Rose Morely.

The gala will also feature performances by Darshan SinghBhuller, RJC Dance and both national and international guest artists who worked with Nadine over the years. These include Birmingham-based ACE Music and Dance, Balbir Singh Dance Company and Company Wayne McGregor. There will also be live music, film, poetry, and guest speakers, including Akram Khan.

I wouldn’t be doing what I do today if it wasn’t for Nadine’s inspiring leadership

A special performance of Robert North’s ‘Troy Game’ - one of Nadine’s favourites – will be restaged by Julian Moss and performed by Phoenix Dance Theatre, RJC, and Northern School of Contemporary Dance, with guests Martin Hilton, Paul Liburd and Hugh Davies. ‘Troy Game’ is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to male machismo and has been performed by companies around the world since its premiere in 1974. “Like so many others, I wouldn’t be doing what I do today if it wasn’t for Nadine’s inspiring leadership”, said Sharon Watson, Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director. “I’m delighted that we can pay tribute to such a motivating and influential woman with an evening of amazing dance talent, all of whom she inspired.”

Janet Smith MBE, Principal of Northern School of Contemporary Dance, said: “I am delighted that Northern School of Contemporary Dance is collaborating with dance partners across the city and artists from the UK, Europe and the US in celebrating the visionary leadership of our founding Principal. This will be a very special event in paying tribute to an extraordinary woman who championed the value of arts education from a young age.” Nadine’s legacy will continue, with proceeds from the event going towards a bursary to support young dancers. Tickets (£15) are available from 0113 213 7700 or online at wyp.org.uk

The Unquiet Dead at Leeds Central Library

Pictured: L’Enfant et les Sortilèges

Opera Really is for Everyone! pera North’s The Little Greats season offers a great choice for families with ‘L’Enfant et les Sortilèges’ (The Child and the Magic Spells) - a bewitching childhood fantasy that starts with the familiar scenario of a child refusing to do their homework and flying into a tantrum. But, in this enchanting fable nothing is quite as it seems. Everything around the boy comes magically to life, including the furniture and his favourite storybook character. Ravel’s 45-minute opera is dazzling, witty and surreal, and is a perfect introduction to opera for children from age seven. There will be a special matinee performance for families on Saturday

7th October, 2.15pm at Leeds Grand Theatre, with tickets for children just £5. If parents are new to opera too, they can take advantage of a special ticket offer that gives them the opportunity to experience opera for just £10 - see www.operanorth.co.uk/tryfor10 There will also be an interactive family workshop before the show. Ideal for anyone who loves music, singing and drama, or who is simply curious to find out more about the opera. Tickets are £5 per person. ‘L’Enfant et les Sortilèges’ is part of Opera North’s The Little Great festival of short operas with huge emotions. ‘Osud’, featured on our cover, is another. For full details, visit www.operanorth. co.uk

Storyteller Matthew Bellwood will bring a selection of macabre tales from the golden age of the ghost story to life at Leeds Central Library on Thursday 12th October at 6.30pm. The Unquiet Dead will feature ‘Lost Hearts’ – M.R. James’s grisly account of black magic in the Midlands; ‘The Shadow’ – Edith Nesbitt’s haunting saga of thwarted love; and Lucy Clifford’s ‘The New Mother‘– possibly the world’s most brutal children’s story. Laced together with a thread of black humour, and framed by a set of traditional English ghost ballads, these are tales to chill the blood and freeze the marrow. The Unquiet Dead is a promenade performance that will visit a number of the library’s spookiest spots - offering a glimpse into the hidden corners of one of the city’s most beautiful Victorian buildings. This is a pay as you feel event but booking is required. www.ticketsource.co.uk/ leedslibraryevents

Re-Discovering Sukhothai t times it seems as though a new restaurant opens in Leeds every week! Keeping up with the food scene means that sometimes we tend to neglect some of our old favourites. A case in point is Sukhothai. We frequented the Chapel Allerton branch through all its expansions, followed it to Headingley and then the city centre and even Harrogate on one occasion. Then we became distracted with some of the new offerings around the city.

Happily we found our way back recently, dropping in to the Headingley branch one Tuesday evening. As it was early, there were few diners as we arrived, but it quickly filled up as the evening went on. As always the service was impeccable. We were quickly served with drinks and presented with the menu – I use the term ‘menu’ loosely as it is more like a book! I believe there are about 200 dishes listed, which can definitely pose a problem for someone who has difficulty choosing

– especially when everything sounds so good! We gradually narrowed down our choices – which wasn’t easy! – and opted for Moo Yang (Strips of pork, marinated in oyster sauce and honey, skewered and barbecued and served with a soy dipping sauce, £5.95); and Yum Pak Tod (Deep-fried, lightly battered mixed vegetables and big prawns with a lovely mango salad, £6.95) as starters. This was quickly followed by Phed Gata Lon (Duck, stir-fried with garlic, black pepper, lime leaves, oyster sauce, lemongrass, onion, fresh chilli and crispy basil, £11.95), served on a sizzling hot platter; and the absolutely delicious Pearls of Sukhothai (Steamed king prawns with garlic and a hot

and sour sauce, flavoured with lemon juice, galangal, lemon grass, lime leaves and coriander, £14.95) – both with some sticky rice. We rounded off the meal and indeed the evening with a lovely, light Mango Cheesecake and some Pear and Ginger Cake with Vanilla ice cream, feeling warm and satisfied and determined not to leave it so long again. What I love about Sukhothai is how fresh everything is and how beautifully presented. At Headingley it is lovely to be able to see the bustle in the kitchen at the back of the restaurant as the chefs prepare the individual dishes. It is the attention to detail at every level – the welcome, super-attentive service, presentation and the food - that make Sukhothai such a enjoyable dining experience.

Meanwood Festival 2018 Seeks Volunteers ay 2018 may be a long way off, but Meanwood Valley Partnership is already thinking about next year’s Meanwood Festival and is looking for volunteers to join the organising team to help make the 2018 Festival the biggest and best yet. Next year the Festival will run from Saturday 19th May to bank holiday Monday 28th May, finishing once again with the fabulous Fun Day. Here’s what some of last year’s volunteers had to say: “I got a better sense of the amazing community in Meanwood and made a whole new set of lifelong friends.” “I got involved because as a family we enjoyed the Fun Day in

the past and wanted to contribute something to ensure the Fun Day is there in years to come.” “I’ve discovered that Meanwood plays host to a lot of talented people! It’s been a really rewarding experience and I feel proud to have been a part of a team that put on such a great community event.”

STARS Presents The Truth Project Comes ‘The Reunion’ TARS theatre group will be performing ‘The Reunion’ by Peter Gordon at Adel & Ireland Wood Community Centre from Tuesday 24th – Saturday 28th October at 7.30pm It’s good to meet up with old friends ... or perhaps not! ……When Nigel arranges a reunion in the back room of a pub he is optimistic of a good turnout. Whilst the numbers disappoint him, he soon has his hands full when a motley middle-aged threesome turns up, bringing with it assorted wives, girlfriends, prejudices, and resentments that have simmered for the last twenty-five years. As the evening unfolds, the men are forced to reassess their old alliances and reflect on their lives, whereas the women are increasingly struck by the futility of the whole exercise! Comedy and confusion combine in this hilarious but poignant story of ‘small people’ in a ‘big world’. Tickets (£7.50/ £6) are available from 0113 293 9596 or tickets@starsleeds.co.uk

ictims and survivors of child sexual abuse are being invited to share their experiences in confidence with the Truth Project in Leeds this October and November. Part of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, the Project gives victims and survivors the chance to attend a session with a trained facilitator to describe their experience and how institutions failed to protect them. They are also welcome to make suggestions about what can be done to help prevent the same abuse occurring in the future. Designed in consultation with victims and survivors, each session is held in a supportive environment which puts their needs first and where they can disclose as much or as little detail as they wish. Information gathered will be used to shape the Inquiry’s recommendations and help to protect future generations of children. Natural Food Store: Ten A SideYears as a Co-operative Owned by the Community! Splitting

Murder Mystery from Adel Players From the pen of comedy writer Peter Gordon comes a hilarious detective spoof in the best Agatha Christie tradition. Here are Bunting the sinister butler, an English Colonel with the prerequisite stiff upper lip, a shady French art dealer and his moll, bumbling local police, and a well-meaning local sleuth who attracts murder like a magnet!

his month, the Natural Food Store on North Lane in Headingley, is celebrating ten years as a community owned co-operative. When, after 23 years, former owners Chris and Sue Sharratt wanted to retire, customers and the community worried that another independent store was about to disappear from Headingley. Together they raised the money to buy the store through a community share issue and took charge of the shop in November 2007. The opening celebration proudly sported the banner ‘Under new ownership – Ours!’ Manager Stuart McClelland was appointed and still leads the team. Chris and Sue were so delighted with the change that they stayed on a part-time basis – and are still there ten years on! Stuart and his team is supported by an elected committee, and the community owners have kept the shop thriving. The primary aim of the buy-out was to carry on the success of the shop and be an independent, community based co-operative selling products with a provenance that customers could trust.

All of which the shop has achieved. With its wide product range and knowledgeable staff it continues to hold its own as a high class grocer in Headingley selling local bread, eggs and dairy, food for special diets, and a wide range of whole foods – particularly its very competitive Wholesense range and ethical foods, as well as bathroom and household goods, and remedies. Whether a buy-out by the community or by staff members, the success of co-operatives arising out of private businesses is a proven model for the continuation of successful businesses but receives little publicity. On Saturday 7th October at 10.30am there will be celebrations once again outside the Natural Food Store, attended by local MP Alex Sobel. Hopefully, this will be the start of another successful decade! For further information, contact Linda Robbins, Society Secretary at info@ naturalfoodstore.coop

Kerfuffle Arts & Crafts: A Community Project at HEART Kerfuffle Arts and Crafts meets at HEART on Bennett Road, Headingley, and is all about getting the community together and socialising through the medium of textiles. It’s about inspiration and motivation, meeting new people and encouraging creativity, all of which will hopefully result in a happier state of mental wellbeing. un by Sian Hughes, workshops will be held every Friday. In addition, Sian will be working with HEART on a series of community events with OWLS (Older Wiser Learning Seniors), and creating a youth group called NEWTS (New Enthusiastic Willing Teens)! Here the old can teach the young – or maybe the other way around! In the first workshop the group tried needle felting. Everyone, beginners and the

more experienced, were soon discussing colour and texture and sharing ideas and enjoying each other’s company. “Everybody has a streak of creativity in them”, said Sian. “If I can help bring people in the community together and put a smile on people’s faces then that would be a great achievement. Whether it’s through a community fabric exchange or through sharing and teaching each other, I’m sure something positive will come out of this ongoing community project.”

NSPCC Volunteers – Helping to Keep Children Safe As a new school year gets underway, NSPCC volunteers are looking forward to delivering NSPCC assemblies and workshops, which teach primary school children how to ‘Speak Out and Stay Safe’. In the 2016/17 school year, the charity spoke to 118,934 children and visited 553 schools the Yorkshire & Humber area. In each primary school visited, NSPCC volunteers presented two assemblies, one for Key Stage One and another for Key Stage Two – the most important message being – if you feel upset, or worried, talk to an adult you trust. It is hugely important to make sure that children are given the tools they need to protect themselves against abuse, cruelty and neglect. The NSPCC wouldn’t have been able to reach so many children without the help of its incredible volunteers. If you would like to help children and empower school communities to fight for every child to have a happy childhood, please contact www.nspcc. org.uk/services-and-resources/ working-with-schools/contactchildline-schools-service/

Adel & Wharfedale Ward Speed Camera Criteria ’m often asked why speed cameras can’t be installed in various locations instead of other traffic calming measures. There are strict criteria around the erection of speed cameras and these are assessed by the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership, which consists of the police, the Highways Agency and five local authorities in the county.

For a general fixed camera there has to have been at least four accidents causing death or serious injury in the five years prior to the commissioning of the site. Traffic speeds showing one vehicle in ten exceeding the speed limit by 10% plus 2mph must be observed – for example, 35mph in a 30mph zone, or by 5mph in a limit above 40mph. For camera route systems (long stretches of road with persistently high accident rates) the length of route has to be between 5km and 20km and, again, strict criteria similar to the above apply.

advised people with guide dogs of what service they can expect when using a private hire vehicle. A recent report indicated that 42% of assistance dog owners nationally had been refused entry to a taxi or minicab. Throughout January and February this year the Licensing Leeds service carried out a joint operation with Guide Dogs for the Blind. A ‘mystery shopper’ exercise was carried out to see how operators handled booking requests made by customers with assistance dogs. Thirty seven operators received a booking request and of these 32 handled the booking appropriately, one did not accept the booking and was given a formal written warning, and four were given advice due to conflicting information given to the mystery shopper. The work forms part of a larger project with the Guide Dogs for the Blind and further test calls will be made in the next 12 months.

tiny and very common bird, the Wren is nevertheless not often seen, due to its habit of keeping to dense undergrowth and bushes.

Photo:

Paul It has a short squat body with reddish brown Chesterfield plumage, a pale stripe RSPBimages. above the eye, and a short com tail that is often held vertically. Its voice is out of all proportion to its size, both its call – a loud ‘tic-tic-tic’ – that develops into an even louder cascade of notes ending with a resounding trill. Although it sings all year round, it is in Spring that this song is loudest and most frequently heard, and

at this time of year the bird itself is more visible too. When it sings, its whole tiny body can be seen to vibrate. In the second half of April, the male will build a selection of unfinished nests (five to eight), domed structures made from

moss, leaves and grass. These are inspected by the female, who chooses one, lines it with feathers and other material, and lays five to six eggs. The young are fed by both parents and in woodland males sometimes have two mates. The Wren is one of the most numerous bird species in the UK, with an estimated 8.5 million territories. In harsh winters the population can decline dramatically, but it usually recovers quickly.

Imagine your garden full of all your favourite flowers and plants – now get planning to make it a reality for next Summer!

Even in late Winter and very early Spring there is colour from Snow Drops and Eranthus

with careful planning, they can provide colour in the garden for months. Even in late Winter and very early Spring there is colour from Snow Drops and Eranthus, then Anemone Blanda, Crocus, Scilla and tiny Iris Reticulata. Next come Narcissi and then Tulips, Camassia and Alliums, taking the display right through to late July. There are also Summer and Autumn flowering bulbs like Gladiolus, Colchicum, Cyclamen hederifolium and Nerene for planting in Spring or Summer to continue the bulb display for the whole year.

Revitalise beds and borders Every few years perennial plants in the border need a bit of a sort out. Many grow into huge clumps that can swamp everything else and some stop producing flowers. Digging out each clump and separating into smaller chunks (by levering apart with two garden forks held back to back or chopping with a spade if plants have a very solid root mass) will give you lots of new smaller plants that you can replant or share with friends. Why not also get rid of any plants that you don’t really like and rearrange things so that they are in the right positions? It’s a chance to re-plan the whole border, perhaps making space for some brand new plants.

It’s planting time for garlic – buy UK grown bulbs for best results and push each clove pointed tip is just below the surface

Many bulbs (corms and tubers) can be bought and planted in Autumn and,

Hardy annuals can be sown now – either straight out into the garden beds or in pots for plants that will flower much earlier than those from spring sowings. Try lovely Ammi, Cornflowers, annual Poppies, and Larkspur – all make lovely cut flowers. Sweet peas can also be sown now and kept in the greenhouse over Winter for much bigger, stronger plants that you can plant out in the Spring.

The Veg Plot It’s planting time for garlic – buy UK grown bulbs for best results and push each clove into the ground so the pointed tip is just below the surface. Harvest any remaining tomatoes, beans, carrots, beetroots, peas, squashes and pumpkins before the first frosts arrive.

WIND RIVER DIRECTED BY: TAYLOR SHERIDAN STARRING: JEREMY RENNER, ELIZABETH OLSEN, JULIA JONES, GRAHAM GREENE, GIL BIRMINGHAM

CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 107 MINS ‘Wind River’ is a taut, tense and gripping mystery/thriller written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, who penned the screenplays for both ‘Sicario’ and ‘Hell or High Water’, and thus rounds out his trilogy based around themes of American frontiers. In the frozen wastes of Wyoming, Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) is the local professional game tracker of a small town and its nearby Native American reservation, to which he has close ties through his ex-wife and son. While tracking a mountain lion which has been killing local livestock, he comes upon the corpse of a young girl from the reservation, the investigation into whose death, due to a peculiarity of the US legal system, falls under federal rather than local jurisdiction. And so, the young, tough but inexperienced and decidedly out of her element FBI agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) is drafted in. Steely, determined and professional, Banner is clearly rattled by being suddenly thrust into a community where she is very much treated as the outsider and regarded with mistrust and hostility. She tentatively strikes up a cooperative alliance with Lambert, for whom the case stirs up painful

An exceptionally well constructed, tightly plotted and controlled drama with a distinct sense of place

memories of his own personal tragedy. This is an exceptionally well constructed, tightly plotted and controlled drama with a distinct sense of place and it quickly generates enough intrigue and disquiet to draw one in and really immerse you in the world inhabited by the characters. The backdrop to the setting and the action is the United States’ treatment of the Native American community and the struggles of life on the reservations. This aspect of the story, one so rarely glimpsed in American cinema, lends the film an added important and compelling dimension. In his first major feature as director, Taylor Sheridan brings his considerable skills as a screenwriter to bear on Wind River. It’s a lean piece with all the fat cut off. Economical with dialogue and exposition, Sheridan knows to show rather than tell and there is a sustained subdued intensity of tone with quiet stretches, underscored with a prevalent sense of unease, punctuated by explosive moments of shocking violence. Liberated from their Avengers costumes, Renner and Olsen are both on excellent form here, offering strong performances of depth and sensitivity which convincingly render the developing dynamic between

the central characters. Renner, particularly, hasn’t had a leading role this substantial since The Hurt Locker and this surely stands as some of his best work to date.

The look of the film and its effectiveness in conveying the mood of the piece is outstanding. The

widescreen panoramas of the location photography are absolutely stunning and the juxtaposition of such intensely human drama being played out against the vastness of such landscapes is striking. As with ‘Hell or High Water’, an excellent and evocative musical score is provided by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis; contributing considerably to the enveloping atmospheric quality of the film. There’s more going on with Wind River than may appear at the outset. What at first glance seems to be a snowbound noir gradually reveals itself to be an exploration of isolation, loss, guilt and responsibility, racism, misogyny and the destruction of native societies through systemic disenfranchisement. It’s a captivating, powerful piece of work that continues to resonate long after the final credits have rolled.

Widescreen Weekend at National Science & Media Museum idescreen Weekend, the National Science and Media Museum’s celebration of cinema technology past, present and future, takes place from 12th – 15th October. The four-day festival features classics, blockbusters, restorations, never-seen shorts, and anniversary screenings galore, all in widescreen format. The weekend also boasts a number of special guests offering unique insights into various aspects of film production – including filmmaker Gregory Orr, whose grandfather Jack L. Warner – was President of Warner Brothers studios. A special screening of the 50th anniversary restoration of My Fair Lady (1964) will follow an onstage interview. Costume designer Jane Petrie will talk about her experience working on titles like ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’, ‘Moon’, and Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’. A screening of Moon, directed by Duncan Jones will follow.

Christopher Nolan’s smash hit Dunkirk, kicks off proceedings on Friday 12th October, with a 70mm widescreen presentation, highlighting its incredible cinematography. Sir Christopher Frayling, film historian, author, and Widescreen Weekend guest curator, will introduce the opening night film. Celluloid Saturday (14th October) celebrates many genres of movies, all shown from film reels using the skill of projectionists and giving audiences an unrivalled insight into widescreen films. Titles include: The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962) – showing in three-strip Cinerama, a process that projects simultaneously from three synchronized 35mm projectors onto a huge curved screen. Pictureville is one of only three cinemas in the world that can show three-strip Cinerama. Shot in black and white Cinemascope, Jailhouse Rock was Elvis Presley’s most famous film. He steals the show as Vince, sentenced to jail for manslaughter, who rises to fame after learning to sing and play guitar from a fellow cellmate. The Untouchables (1987) Director Brian DePalma’s lavish gangster movie and another rare 70mm print. Suspiria (1977) Director Dario Argento’s masterpiece of Italian horror still terrifies audiences and is recognised as influencer in the horror genre. A screening of a new 70mm restoration print of David Lean’s epic Lawrence of Arabia (1962) will bring the festival to a close. Carers Leeds Provide Discharge Planning Support to Leeds Hospitals

A Family Skydive for Bowel Cancer UK n Sunday 15th October, three generations of one family are taking on the challenge of freefalling at 120mph from an aircraft at 10,000 feet in order to raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK. Deborah Judah (51), her three sons David (21), Reuben (19) and Ethan (17), and her father Melvyn (74) are focused on raising awareness about bowel cancer. This is particularly important to the family as Deborah was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer in June 2015. Despite chemotherapy and multiple surgeries on her bowel and liver, the cancer is still present. She and her family are determined to make more people aware of the disease and raise as much money as possible for the cause. More than 44 people die from bowel cancer every day in the UK, it’s the nation’s second biggest cancer killer, but it shouldn’t be. It’s treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early.

“The sky dive is a real challenge for me as I hate heights”, said Deborah. “But, I’d really like to make a difference and anything I can do to raise funds for the life-saving work of Bowel Cancer UK has to be a good thing. Research can help to find new treatments which could further extend my life. The great thing about the skydive is we are doing it as a family and none of us has done a skydive before. We are proud to be raising funds for Bowel Cancer UK. I am very excited that my partner, my mum and my son’s girlfriends will be cheering us on from below and we are looking forward to making it a fun family weekend.” To support Deborah and her family, donations can be made via www.justgiving. com/companyteams/Judahs If you would like to take part in a tandem skydive to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK, please visit www.bowelcanceruk. org to receive your fundraising pack.

Hospital discharge planning is critical to the health and wellbeing of patients and carers. Recognising this, Carers Leeds has agreed to base a new Hospital Liaison Support Worker at St James’ Hospital to make this transition as smooth as possible. If the patient needs to move into a care home or is to return home with a new care package, Carers Leeds’ Hospital Liaison Support Worker will help to make the necessary arrangements. Working with care providers and hospital staff, they will guide the family through the challenges of choosing a care provider, with a particular focus on supporting families who are funding the care themselves, rather than receiving financial help from the NHS or Leeds City Council. The role is funded by Leeds Care Association, a membership organisation for independent care providers, that include residential care homes, nursing homes and domiciliary care providers. For over 20 years Carers Leeds has been improving the lives of the city’s unpaid carers. They deliver confidential one-to-one and group support, as well as advice over the phone and online. rimary schools nationwide were asked to create a piece of artwork that represented ‘Flavours of South Africa’. Pupils were inspired by the country’s culture, geography, wildlife, people, and the production of food and drink. “We spent several weeks exploring and researching the South African fruit industry, looking at how the fruit is grown and the processes for it to reach our country”, said Hilary Ellis Year 2 teacher. “We also explored flavours through fruit smoothies and flapjacks using South African fruit; designed South African style jewellery; explored safari animals by visiting the Yorkshire Wildlife Park; and made books all about what we had learnt. The children

were very enthusiastic and learnt so much about South Africa that could be celebrated and expressed through the colourful class collage.” BBC children’s television presenter, Stefan Gates, visited the school with his food and science Gastronaut show. “The children were an absolute delight, incredibly well-mannered”, he said. “They have decided to donate their collage to a rural school in South Africa.” St Mary’s received £1,000 to spend on school resources. Schools can also ‘Help a South African School’ by donating their unwanted books. If your school’s having a clear out, please visit http:// helpasouthafricanschool.co.uk/bookdonation/ to donate.

Jenya Nallapeta (4) recently decided to cut her beautiful long hair and donate it to the Little Princess Trust that makes wigs for children suffering from hair loss. At the same time she decided she wanted to raise money for Martin House Children’s Hospice, which cares for children with life limiting conditions across Yorkshire and, at the time of going to press, she had raised nearly £360! Jenya lives in Meanwood and has just started at Rose Court (GSAL) Nursery. She might miss her hair as the weather turns colder! Carr Manor Takes to the High Seas arr Manor School was recently selected to work with the Tall Ships Youth Trust, thanks to sponsorship from HSBC, which allows four schools to undertake the expedition each year. The Carr Manor pupils joined Gladesmore Community School from Tottenham, Dylan Thomas Community School from Swansea, and Longhill High School in Brighton.

One of Carr Manor’s core values is ‘enjoy and achieve’ and this once in a lifetime experience certainly fits the bill.

The students worked in teams with the other schools and the ship’s crew to successfully navigate the ship during their expedition. Docking in Belgium, a visit to a chocolate factory helped to re-energise them after all that hard work! The Tall Ships Youth Trust is dedicated to the education and personal development of young people aged 12 to 25 through crewing on its sailing vessels. Through this unique sailing experience, it introduces young people to life in a small maritime community, living in close proximity to others, sharing facilities, carrying out routines and learning as a team to sail the ship and live onboard. This form of adventure training offers a wealth of opportunity for personal development. The selected students were chosen by their head of year as a reward for their good attitude and to allow them to benefit from the experience ahead of their final year and exams. They had already demonstrated good teamwork skills through their commitment to school sports teams and had many opportunities to draw on those skills whilst on board.

Explore Wildlife World this October!

The first phase of a brand new wildlife attraction launches at Lotherton Hall on 21st October, just in time for half term. Visitors will be able to meet Humboldt penguins, rehomed from zoos around the country, and watch them play in their pool from an underwater viewing platform. New South American species, including tapirs and capybaras (the world’s largest rodents) will also be settling in to their new homes in the Forest Zone.

The redevelopment of Lotherton will take place in phases over the next few years and will see the creation of a series of themed zones. Each one will tell the story of the natural world, drawing on the travels of the Gascoigne family, the former owners of the estate. The Coastal Zone, opening this October, will feature enclosures where flamingos, wading and free flying birds will live in an aviary structure alongside the new penguin pool. Future phases will include developments such as new conservation facilities, a Children’s Zone, with farm animals and an Asia-themed zone, which will be home to red pandas. Northern Ballet’s Ugly Duckling Returns Northern Ballet’s original ballet for children ‘Ugly Duckling’ returns to the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from 23rd – 28th October. Based on the famous Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, it tells the story of a lonely and fed-up duckling, ignored by those around her who think she is too ugly to fit in. This 40-minute ballet follows her on her journey as she comes to learn that she was beautiful all along. ‘Ugly Duckling’ is choreographed by leading soloist Dreda Blow and former Northern Ballet dancer Sebastian Loe, and features set designs by Dave Gillan, lighting by Alastair West, costumes by Julie Anderson and live music arranged by John Longstaff. Tickets (£6/ £4.50) can be booked at theatreleeds.com or by calling 0113 220 8008. northernballet.com/duckling

Discover how the eye works this half term by taking part in a fascinating hands-on dissection workshop at Thackray Medical Museum. With the help of an expert, you will be led through the dissection of an eye to understand how the images we see are formed. Find out about each part of the eye - lens, cornea, iris, optic nerve and retina - and discover how they work together to create the images we see. By the end of the workshop you will understand the blind spot, why we blink, the purpose of tears and how to look after your eyes. These practical workshops are perfect for all the family and take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm between 23rd and 27th October. Usual museum admission charges apply and there is a small charge of £3 per eye. Don’t forget that admission tickets allow unlimited returns for 12 months and, if you are already annual ticket holders, you will get in free and only need to pay for the workshop. Sarah & Duck Plan a Party at West Yorkshire Playhouse CBeebies’ hit animated series ‘Sarah & Duck’ will be brought to life at West Yorkshire Playhouse in ‘Sarah and Duck’s Big Top Birthday’ from Tuesday 24th – Saturday 28th October. Presented by Polka Theatre, Sarah and Duck and all their favourite friends, including The Ribbon Sisters, The Shallots, John and Flamingo and Umbrella, plan a circus-themed birthday party for Scarf Lady in their garden. But when the weather turns windy and the big top is blown away, will Sarah and Duck be able to save the day? Featuring all the familiar voices from the CBeebies series, including Roger Allam as the Narrator and Lesley Nicol as Scarf Lady, the story unfolds through puppetry, charming storytelling and toe-tapping music, Sarah and

Duck’s Big Top Birthday will take families on a magical theatrical adventure. Sarah and Duck has been a huge hit since its debut in 2013, winning a BAFTA for ‘Best PreSchool Animation’ in 2014 and regularly appearing in CBeebies’ Top Ten programmes for viewers aged 4-15. Recommended for children aged 2-6.

The museum has free drop-in daily from 21st to 29th October, 10am – 4pm. As well as being able to see the craft that took the European Space Agency’s first UK astronaut into orbit and back, you can find out all about Tim’s historic mission to the International Space Station in 2016.

Children of all ages can take part in building and launching rockets; exploring the surface of a distant planet with a selfmade space rover; and creating a mission badge, before taking part in an astronaut training programme.

The museum will also be hosting an array of space themed activities, all inspired by the Soyuz TMA-19M, which will be on display complete with its

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

QUALITY HANDCRAFTED UPHOLSTERY Brendan Jordan has lived in Leeds all his life. He worked at Bridgecraft for eighteen years before starting up Jordan Upholstery. “I’ve been manufacturing suites for the best part of 30 years. Although we’ve traditionally supplied to trade, recently we made the decision to open our doors to the general public. With us you’re buying direct from the manufacturer, so you can have the choice of style, size and fabric without paying astronomical prices.

CALL TODAY:

Anyone calling in will deal with me personally and I’ll oversee everything right through to delivery. You’ll never get lost in the system with us; we are small enough to give the personal touch but large enough to deliver. All our furniture is hand made in our on-site factory so we control the quality from start to finish and are able to offer you the highest standards of craftsmanship and of course, exceptional value for money.”

Quality is never an accident.

It is always the result of High Intention, Sincere Effort, Intelligent Direction & Skilful Execution. It represents the wise choice of many alternatives.
