Leeds Art Gallery Re-Opens eeds Art Gallery re-opens on 13th October, having undergone essential repairs to the original roof and the historic Victorian building. It will feature a re-presentation of the collection across the gallery that looks back over 130 years to showcase highlights from the nationally designated collection. The re-opening will also be marked with a major ARTIST ROOMS Joseph Beuys exhibition, and new acquisitions by leading contemporary artists such as American artist Martine Syms and renowned British sculptor Alison Wilding. Beuys (1921 – 1986) was one of the twentieth century’s most important and revolutionary cultural figures. He changed the look and vocabulary of sculpture forever, and helped put German art back on the map after World War II. Adopting the roles of political and social activist and educator, he believed in the healing power and social function of art. He
saw creativity as central to all aspects of human existence. This new exhibition will fill the three main rooms on the ground floor, bringing together sculpture and drawings from the 1950s onwards drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, owned jointly by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate. These works show the strong scientific basis for his art and his pioneering use of materials such as felt, fat, wax and copper, which the artist used for their ability to insulate, protect, transmit and transform. During the renovations, a welcome discovery was a beautiful barrel vaulted glazed roof in one of the first floor galleries, which had remained hidden above a false ceiling for over 40 years! This new gallery will be showing Arena (2000), a major sculpture by Alison Wilding, which is a gift to Leeds from the Contemporary Art Society.

n 18th November 1878 the Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House opened its doors for the first time. Almost three thousand people stepped from the dark, cold November evening into the warmth and splendour of its glittering auditorium, richly glowing in crimson and gold, its stunning gilded plasterwork lit by a massive crystal chandelier with over 400 gas jets. The cream of Leeds society was there. After the official speeches the charismatic young manager, the actor Wilson Barrett, stepped forward to welcome the packed audience. Wilson Barrett was already well-known in Leeds. Born William Henry Barrett, the son of an Essex farmer, he had begun his stage career in Halifax in 1864, aged 18, then had tramped over to Leeds to apply to join the company at the Princess Theatre, where he got his first lead roles. The company toured the northern theatres, and in Aberdeen he met and married the well-known actress Caroline Heath, ten years his senior. In the 1870s they acted together in several London productions, while he set up his own touring company. He specialised in popular melodrama – ‘villainy vanquished by

With a Lasting Power of Attorney you can provide control over decisions regarding your financial or
physical/mental wellbeing, by placing that control in the hands of someone you trust. We can discuss what your requirements would be with you and assist in completing the appropriate form of attorney, and we’d be happy to visit you at home, if that is what you’d prefer. Then, when the time arrives for the will to take effect, we can assist with the process of proving it and settling the estate. This will involve obtaining a valuation of the estate and assessing liabilities; completing the relevant accounts and oath (including paying any tax that may be due) and procuring the Grant of Probate (or letters of administration if there is no will) before collecting the assets, settling the debts and distributing the balance in accordance with the will (or the statutory intestacy rules if no will). Bridge is recognised as a great way to keep the brain in trim and it opens up a new social scene at the same time. Recent studies claim that Bridge players remain mentally alert well into their eighties! It works for everyone, whatever your age. It is included as an option in the skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme, and could be a CV enhancer. Cooks and Their Books ‘Cooks and Their Books: Collecting Cookery Books in Leeds’ is the latest exhibition at the University of Leeds Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery. It highlights the University’s outstanding Cookery Collection of books, papers and objects relating to food, drink and cooking which date from 2,500 BC to the present day. The collection was established in 1939 when Blanche Legat Leigh, a former Lady Mayoress of Leeds, donated her collection of 1,500 historic volumes and manuscripts to Leeds University Library. “This exhibition contains many unique items”, said Dr Stella Butler, University Librarian and Keeper of the Brotherton Collection. “The display will interest anyone interested in in the history of food with its fascinating stories about how what we eat has changed over time.” The exhibition, co-curated by food historians Peter Brears and Dr Eileen

White, showcases the world’s first illustrated cookbook; the first English cookery book ever published outside London; and why a long-forgotten writer dubbed the ‘Queen of Ices’ really deserves the Victorian cookbook crown taken by Mrs Beeton. “Cookbooks aren’t just for cooks”, said Dr White. “They give us an insight into society and into major events in history. A Gala for Nadine he Celebration Gala at West Yorkshire Playhouse on Sunday 8th October will pay tribute to Nadine Senior MBE, the Yorkshireborn dance pioneer and founding principle of Northern School of Contemporary Dance, who died in January 2016. Phoenix Dance Theatre and Northern School of Contemporary Dance will join forces for an inspiring evening of dance which promises to be a dazzling celebration of one of the most influential dance champions of her time who inspired generations of dancers, choreographers, teachers and dance leaders worldwide. The gala will also feature performances by Darshan SinghBhuller, RJC Dance and both national and international guest artists who worked with Nadine over the years. These include Birmingham-based ACE Music and Dance, Balbir Singh Dance Company and Company Wayne McGregor. There will also be live music, film, poetry, and guest speakers, including Akram Khan.

A special performance of Robert North’s ‘Troy Game’ - one of Nadine’s favourites – will be restaged by Julian Moss and performed by Phoenix Dance Theatre, RJC, and Northern School of Contemporary Dance, with guests Martin Hilton, Paul Liburd and Hugh Davies. ‘Troy Game’ is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to male machismo and has been performed by companies around the world since its premiere in 1974. “Like so many others, I wouldn’t be doing what I do today if it wasn’t for Nadine’s inspiring leadership”, said Sharon Watson, Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director. “I’m delighted that we can pay tribute to such a motivating and influential woman with an evening of amazing dance talent, all of whom she inspired.”

(The Fall of) The Master Builder Poses the Question – ‘What If?’ Pictured: Reece Dinsdale
Henrik Ibsen’s play ‘The Master Builder’ is the inspiration for a new play, ‘(The fall of) The Master Builder’, adapted by award-winning playwright Zinnie Harris and showing at West Yorkshire Playhouse from Saturday 30th September – Saturday 21st October. he idea for the play came about during a conversation between its director James Brining and Playhouse Associate Artist, Reece Dinsdale (who plays the lead in the production), about possible inclusions in the upcoming programme. Initially Reece suggested Ibsen’s ‘The Enemy of the People’, then James counter-suggested ‘The Master Builder’. But ‘The Master Builder’ with a twist. He simply posed the question “What if?” What if the play took a certain strand and ran with it, making it speak more for today?

Re-Discovering Sukhothai t times it seems as though a new restaurant opens in Leeds every week! Keeping up with the food scene means that sometimes we tend to neglect some of our old favourites. A case in point is Sukhothai. We frequented the Chapel Allerton branch through all its expansions, followed it to Headingley and then the city centre and even Harrogate on one occasion. Then we became distracted with some of the new offerings around the city.
Happily we found our way back recently, dropping in to the Headingley branch one Tuesday evening. As it was early, there were few diners as we arrived, but it quickly filled up as the evening went on. As always the service was impeccable. We were quickly served with drinks and presented with the menu – I use the term ‘menu’ loosely as it is more like a book! I believe there are about 200 dishes listed, which can definitely pose a problem for someone who has difficulty choosing
– especially when everything sounds so good! We gradually narrowed down our choices – which wasn’t easy! – and opted for Moo Yang (Strips of pork, marinated in oyster sauce and honey, skewered and barbecued and served with a soy dipping sauce, £5.95); and Yum Pak Tod (Deep-fried, lightly battered mixed vegetables and big prawns with a lovely mango salad, £6.95) as starters. This was quickly followed by Phed Gata Lon (Duck, stir-fried with garlic, black pepper, lime leaves, oyster sauce, lemongrass, onion, fresh chilli and crispy basil, £11.95), served on a sizzling hot platter; and the absolutely delicious Pearls of Sukhothai (Steamed king prawns with garlic and a hot
and sour sauce, flavoured with lemon juice, galangal, lemon grass, lime leaves and coriander, £14.95) – both with some sticky rice. We rounded off the meal and indeed the evening with a lovely, light Mango Cheesecake and some Pear and Ginger Cake with Vanilla ice cream, feeling warm and satisfied and determined not to leave it so long again. What I love about Sukhothai is how fresh everything is and how beautifully presented. At Headingley it is lovely to be able to see the bustle in the kitchen at the back of the restaurant as the chefs prepare the individual dishes. It is the attention to detail at every level – the welcome, super-attentive service, presentation and the food - that make Sukhothai such a enjoyable dining experience.

Meanwood Festival 2018 Seeks Volunteers ay 2018 may be a long way off, but Meanwood Valley Partnership is already thinking about next year’s Meanwood Festival and is looking for volunteers to join the organising team to help make the 2018 Festival the biggest and best yet. Next year the Festival will run from Saturday 19th May to bank holiday Monday 28th May, finishing once again with the fabulous Fun Day. Here’s what some of last year’s volunteers had to say: “I got a better sense of the amazing community in Meanwood and made a whole new set of lifelong friends.” “I got involved because as a family we enjoyed the Fun Day in

The William Merritt Centre’s New AccessAbility Exhibition
he William Merritt Centre’s new AccessAbility Exhibition will take place on 11th October at the Centenary Pavilion, Leeds United Football Club, 10am – 3pm. Once again, it will showcase new assistive technology and provide information and advice to help both adults and children with disabilities achieve greater independence. “Professionals, end users, their families and carers are invited to attend this free event”, said Annette Abbott, Senior Occupational Therapist. “As well as companies demonstrating a range of assistive technology (including beds, seating, walking aids, bathing aids, tricycles, scooters, wheelchairs, and car adaptations), a number of charities will be attending to offer support and information. This is a great opportunity to meet companies and try products that can enhance your everyday life and enable greater independence. It is also useful for professionals to attend with clients to assess which equipment might best meet their needs.” A special gaming area will showcase the options available for adaptations, so everyone can access computers, toys and computer games. And, William Merritt Centre’s Car Safety Consultant and Occupational Therapist will be on hand to check that children’s car seats (mainstream and special needs) are fitted correctly.
A Wind of Change – A Community Theatre Project in Meanwood resented by Common Chorus Theatre and InterACT Church and Community Partnership, ‘A Wind of Change’ is a special community theatre project being created for and by residents, workers and regular visitors to Meanwood. If you would like to take part, just sign up – it’s absolutely free! There will be four different groups, each led by a professional artist, and each of these will form a different part of the story. You will get to work alongside some of Leeds’ most exciting theatre makers to create and
perform this original show. All you need is to be committed to the whole journey of the show and be able to attend most, if not all, rehearsals and the performance week. The first creative workshop is on 21st
October, when work will begin on creating the script. This will be followed by weekly rehearsals in the new year. The performance will take place during February Half Term at Stainbeck Church. Anyone with an on-going connection to Meanwood can take part. No previous experience is necessary, although the initiated are very welcome too! vid readers of North Leeds Life will remember that six months ago the Alwoodley Councillors arranged a meeting for local residents to meet with First Bus to challenge them on numerous issues of poor service. We arranged to meet again in September – unfortunately this meeting was unable to go ahead - for which I am sorry. The good news is that we have rescheduled the meeting for Monday 30th October, 6pm at Maecare on Cranmer Bank.
If you wish to attend to raise any concerns about local bus services, please feel free to join us. As councillors we don’t control the bus companies, but we can ensure that local residents get the chance to put their frustration directly to those who do, in the hope of getting them to make improvements. As you know, Leeds is bidding to be the European Capital of Culture in 2023. If we are successful, the positive impact on our city across the board will be huge, and not only on our culture scene. The city submits its bid on Friday 27th October and by way of celebration, a day of culture will be held by all the arts organisations around Quarry Hill, including West Yorkshire Playhouse, Northern Ballet, Phoenix Dance and College of Music. There will be pop up stages, marquees, food markets and a whole host of free activities. Details will be available on the Council’s website.
Finally, a reminder that 31st October is Halloween, which means ‘Trick or Treating’. For the past few years we have run a ‘no lantern no knocking’ scheme in Alwoodley. If you are happy to receive Halloween visitors, put a pumpkin lantern or other decoration at your front door. If there’s no lantern or decoration, ghosts, ghouls, witches and wizards, should knock at another door that is decorated. esidents in Moortown will be aware of the recent issue of the Traveller encampment on King Alfred’s recreational field opposite Stonegate Road, and as councillors for the area, Cllr Sharon Hamilton and I know how much distress this caused as we received a huge number of emails and phone calls. We are pleased to have resolved the issue and we have plans for the longterm security of the site. As your ward councillor, hearing the views of residents is very important. Following the eviction, we organised a residents’ meeting with the Council and the police to discuss he issue and get residents’ views as to how we could avoid this situation and how it could be better dealt with in future.
On the environmental issues raised, the Council worked swiftly to replace the skip on site and arranged extra toilet provision, as well as ensure there were plans in place for a significant clean-up after the eviction. We have since ensured extra logs were put in place at different access points to the fields to make sure the site is secure. Having listened to residents’ views regarding a solution, we are now funding extra tree planting to provide a natural barrier to vehicles. This will also help with drainage issues and maintain the natural appearance of the site. I would like to thank residents for their patience and the valuable feedback during this period, and we would like to assure residents that we will do everything we can to bring the site into regular public use.

moss, leaves and grass. These are inspected by the female, who chooses one, lines it with feathers and other material, and lays five to six eggs. The young are fed by both parents and in woodland males sometimes have two mates. The Wren is one of the most numerous bird species in the UK, with an estimated 8.5 million territories. In harsh winters the population can decline dramatically, but it usually recovers quickly.

Revitalise beds and borders Every few years perennial plants in the border need a bit of a sort out. Many grow into huge clumps that can swamp everything else and some stop producing flowers. Digging out each clump and separating into smaller chunks (by levering apart with two garden forks held back to back or chopping with a spade if plants have a very solid root mass) will give you lots of new smaller plants that you can replant or share with friends. Why not also get rid of any plants that you don’t really like and rearrange things so that they are in the right positions? It’s a chance to re-plan the whole border, perhaps making space for some brand new plants.

In the frozen wastes of Wyoming, Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) is the local professional game tracker of a small town and its nearby Native American reservation, to which he has close ties through his ex-wife and son. While tracking a mountain lion which has been killing local livestock, he comes upon the corpse of a young girl from the reservation, the investigation into whose death, due to a peculiarity of the US legal system, falls under federal rather than local jurisdiction. And so, the young, tough but inexperienced and decidedly out of her element FBI agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) is drafted in. Steely, determined and professional, Banner is clearly rattled by being suddenly thrust into a community where she is very much treated as the outsider and regarded with mistrust and hostility. This is an exceptionally well constructed, tightly plotted and controlled drama with a distinct sense of place and it quickly generates enough intrigue and disquiet to draw one in and really immerse you in the world inhabited by the characters. The backdrop to the setting and the action is the United States’ treatment of the Native American community and the struggles of life on the reservations. This aspect of the story, one so rarely glimpsed in American cinema, lends the film an added important and compelling dimension. In his first major feature as director, Taylor Sheridan brings his considerable skills as a screenwriter to bear on Wind River. It’s a lean piece with all the fat cut off. Economical with dialogue and exposition, Sheridan knows to show rather than tell and there is a sustained subdued intensity of tone with quiet stretches, underscored with a prevalent sense of unease, punctuated by explosive moments of shocking violence. Liberated from their Avengers costumes, Renner and Olsen are both on excellent form here, offering strong performances of depth and sensitivity which convincingly render the developing dynamic between
the central characters. Renner, particularly, hasn’t had a leading role this substantial since The Hurt Locker and this surely stands as some of his best work to date.
The look of the film and its effectiveness in conveying the mood of the piece is outstanding. The
widescreen panoramas of the location photography are absolutely stunning and the juxtaposition of such intensely human drama being played out against the vastness of such landscapes is striking. As with ‘Hell or High Water’, an excellent and evocative musical score is provided by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis; contributing considerably to the enveloping atmospheric quality of the film. There’s more going on with Wind River than may appear at the outset. What at first glance seems to be a snowbound noir gradually reveals itself to be an exploration of isolation, loss, guilt and responsibility, racism, misogyny and the destruction of native societies through systemic disenfranchisement. It’s a captivating, powerful piece of work that continues to resonate long after the final credits have rolled.

Widescreen Weekend at National Science & Media Museum idescreen Weekend, the National Science and Media Museum’s celebration of cinema technology past, present and future, takes place from 12th – 15th October. The four-day festival features classics, blockbusters, restorations, never-seen shorts, and anniversary screenings galore, all in widescreen format. The weekend also boasts a number of special guests offering unique insights into various aspects of film production – including filmmaker Gregory Orr, whose grandfather Jack L. Warner – was President of Warner Brothers studios. A special screening of the 50th anniversary restoration of My Fair Lady (1964) will follow an onstage interview. Costume designer Jane Petrie will talk about her experience working on titles like ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’, ‘Moon’, and Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’. A screening of Moon, directed by Duncan Jones will follow.
Christopher Nolan’s smash hit Dunkirk, kicks off proceedings on Friday 12th October, with a 70mm widescreen presentation, highlighting its incredible cinematography. Sir Christopher Frayling, film historian, author, and Widescreen Weekend guest curator, will introduce the opening night film. Celluloid Saturday (14th October) celebrates many genres of movies, all shown from film reels using the skill of projectionists and giving audiences an unrivalled insight into widescreen films. Titles include: The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962) – showing in three-strip Cinerama, a process that projects simultaneously from three synchronized 35mm projectors onto a huge curved screen. Pictureville is one of only three cinemas in the world that can show three-strip Cinerama. Shot in black and white Cinemascope, Jailhouse Rock was Elvis Presley’s most famous film. He steals the show as Vince, sentenced to jail for manslaughter, who rises to fame after learning to sing and play guitar from a fellow cellmate. The Untouchables (1987) Director Brian DePalma’s lavish gangster movie and another rare 70mm print. Suspiria (1977) Director Dario Argento’s masterpiece of Italian horror still terrifies audiences and is recognised as influencer in the horror genre. A screening of a new 70mm restoration print of David Lean’s epic Lawrence of Arabia (1962) will bring the festival to a close. Recorded at her own All Things Analogue Studios, where she and her collaborators kick it old school with some heavy-duty vintage equipment, ‘Blue Jean’ begins dreamily with slinky siren songstress Fuzzy beckoning you to “uprise with me” before falling in on a shuffling funk drumbeat with a thrumming acoustic guitar rhythm over a gently thonking bassline. The verse leans into this groove while also

Carers Leeds Provide Discharge Planning Support to Leeds Hospitals
A Family Skydive for Bowel Cancer UK n Sunday 15th October, three generations of one family are taking on the challenge of freefalling at 120mph from an aircraft at 10,000 feet in order to raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK. Deborah Judah (51), her three sons David (21), Reuben (19) and Ethan (17), and her father Melvyn (74) are focused on raising awareness about bowel cancer. This is particularly important to the family as Deborah was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer in June 2015. Despite chemotherapy and multiple surgeries on her bowel and liver, the cancer is still present. She and her family are determined to make more people aware of the disease and raise as much money as possible for the cause. More than 44 people die from bowel cancer every day in the UK, it’s the nation’s second biggest cancer killer, but it shouldn’t be. It’s treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early.
“The sky dive is a real challenge for me as I hate heights”, said Deborah. “But, I’d really like to make a difference and anything I can do to raise funds for the life-saving work of Bowel Cancer UK has to be a good thing. Research can help to find new treatments which could further extend my life. The great thing about the skydive is we are doing it as a family and none of us has done a skydive before. Recognising this, Carers Leeds has agreed to base a new Hospital Liaison Support Worker at St James’ Hospital to make this transition as smooth as possible. If the patient needs to move into a care home or is to return home with a new care package, Carers Leeds’ Hospital Liaison Support Worker will help to make the necessary arrangements. Working with care providers and hospital staff, they will guide the family through the challenges of choosing a care provider, with a particular focus on supporting families who are funding the care themselves, rather than receiving financial help from the NHS or Leeds City Council. The role is funded by Leeds Care Association, a membership organisation for independent care providers, that include residential care homes, nursing homes and domiciliary care providers. Beanstalk Seeks Volunteers Jenya to Help Children Improve Donates Their Reading As the new academic year begins, literacy charity Beanstalk is calling for members of the community in Leeds to sign up to its 2017-18 intake of trained volunteers that will help children in local primary schools become more confident readers.
ow levels of literacy continue to be a persistent problem both nationally and locally. According to the most recent SATS test results, almost 3,000 of primary school leavers in Leeds did not achieve the expected level in reading. This can have a devastating impact on the lives of individuals and our communities, and is estimated to cost the UK economy £81 billion every year. “The start of a new academic year is a critical time for us to ensure there is enough one-to-one reading support available for schools that have identified children that need extra help and encouragement with their reading,” explains Janet Skeen, Area Manager for Beanstalk.
“Without intervention, the outlook for children struggling with reading is concerning. It can lead to behavioural problems and can affect their future prospects in life and work. Carr Manor Takes to the High Seas arr Manor School was recently selected to work with the Tall Ships Youth Trust, thanks to sponsorship from HSBC, which allows four schools to undertake the expedition each year. The Carr Manor pupils joined Gladesmore Community School from Tottenham, Dylan Thomas Community School from Swansea, and Longhill High School in Brighton.
The students worked in teams with the other schools and the ship’s crew to successfully navigate the ship during their expedition. Docking in Belgium, a visit to a chocolate factory helped to re-energise them after all that hard work! The Tall Ships Youth Trust is dedicated to the education and personal development of young people aged 12 to 25 through crewing on its sailing vessels. Through this unique sailing experience, it introduces young people to life in a small maritime community, living in close proximity to others, sharing facilities, carrying out routines and learning as a team to sail the ship and live onboard. This form of adventure training offers a wealth of opportunity for personal development. The selected students were chosen by their head of year as a reward for their good attitude and to allow them to benefit from the experience ahead of their final year and exams. They had already demonstrated good teamwork skills through their commitment to school sports teams and had many opportunities to draw on those skills whilst on board.

Explore Wildlife World this October!
The first phase of a brand new wildlife attraction launches at Lotherton Hall on 21st October, just in time for half term. Visitors will be able to meet Humboldt penguins, rehomed from zoos around the country, and watch them play in their pool from an underwater viewing platform. New South American species, including tapirs and capybaras (the world’s largest rodents) will also be settling in to their new homes in the Forest Zone.
The redevelopment of Lotherton will take place in phases over the next few years and will see the creation of a series of themed zones. Each one will tell the story of the natural world, drawing on the travels of the Gascoigne family, the former owners of the estate. The Coastal Zone, opening this October, will feature enclosures where flamingos, wading and free flying birds will live in an aviary structure alongside the new penguin pool. Future phases will include developments such as new conservation facilities, a Children’s Zone, with farm animals and an Asia-themed zone, which will be home to red pandas. Jurassic Kingdom, a roar-some animatronic dinosaur tour, comes to Temple Newsam from 13th – 29th October, 10am – 6pm daily. Northern Ballet’s Ugly Duckling Returns Northern Ballet’s original ballet for children ‘Ugly Duckling’ returns to the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from 23rd – 28th October. Based on the famous Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, it tells the story of a lonely and fed-up duckling, ignored by those around her who think she is too ugly to fit in. Discover how the eye works this half term by taking part in a fascinating hands-on dissection workshop at Thackray Medical Museum. With the help of an expert, you will be led through the dissection of an eye to understand how the images we see are formed. Find out about each part of the eye - lens, cornea, iris, optic nerve and retina - and discover how they work together to create the images we see. By the end of the workshop you will understand the blind spot, why we blink, the purpose of tears and how to look after your eyes. These practical workshops are perfect for all the family and take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm between 23rd and 27th October. Usual museum admission charges apply and there is a small charge of £3 per eye.
