DEAR READERS,
Days offer numerous opportunities to discover historic buildings; even more new restaurants are opening; Leeds Goth Festival is back; and Leeds Royal Naval Association is looking for new members. I hesitate to mention October, but that’s where we are headed now! Please send all your news and notices to us by 1st September, and advertising by 12th September (1st & 12th October for November edition).
eptember always seems like the second beginning to the year – in January we make all kinds of resolutions….and let them gradually slip over the months. Then in September, re-energised perhaps by some time off, we think again about actively getting involved in fitness, education, music, culture. And it’s a great time to do it. The city’s universities and colleges offer all kinds of courses, for serious qualifications or just the pleasure of learning something new. Our various cultural institutions have fantastic programmes lined up. Heritage Open

he Queens, Kings, Princes, Princesses, masqueraders, crowds, and the people labouring behind the scenes all illustrate this exciting history, telling a story of Caribbean creativity and multicultural hospitality. Leeds carnival has grown from a small celebration in Chapeltown in 1967 into an annual showpiece of British/Caribbean culture that welcomes performers from all over the country, and attracts crowds of over 150,000 people. The book is a joyful celebration of that journey. Photographs combined with texts describe some of the key moments since carnival first took to the streets. The pictures show how carnival’s art has developed and the text identifies many of the people who have made this

harles Jenkinson has been described as a one-man phenomenon that any city would count itself lucky to have. He was the dynamic, inspirational force for slum clearance and housing development in Leeds in the 1930s, though some accused him of bringing ‘red ruin’ to the city. Always in the thick of controversy, he was impervious to criticism, convinced of the rightness of his cause. His vision helped to shape the city as it is today – though his iconic project, the massive, modernist Quarry Hill flats, is just a distant memory now, demolished in 1978. Charles Jenkinson was 40 when he came to Leeds in 1927 as the new vicar of impoverished Holbeck, with its narrow dirty streets, foul smoky air, and cramped back-to-backs. He was no stranger to hardship. He was born in 1887 in London’s East End, where his father worked in the docks. Home was overcrowded so he had to live with his grandmother. At thirteen he left elementary school for office work, but devoted his spare time to the local church, working

suburbs of Gipton and Belle Isle began to take shape. He introduced an innovative scheme of differential rents to help those in most need – this too caused uproar and bitter accusations of injustice. He even had a scheme for providing furniture. A new development of flats was planned for the city centre, on a prominent site at the end of the splendid, new Headrow – Quarry Hill, once site of the worst slums. The design followed the modernist model he and Livett had admired in Vienna – 938 flats in huge curved blocks, constructed by a new method using steel and concrete, with balconies and flowerboxes, lifts, a sophisticated garbage disposal system, communal facilities, green spaces, nurseries and playgrounds. Leeds for European A Night of City of Culture 2023! Glitz and
Glamour for St Gemma’s The St Gemma’s Hospice Winter Ball is taking place on Saturday 18th November at Elland Road Centenary Pavilion, and this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever! Promising to be a night of glitz, glamour and spectacular entertainment, it is expected to raise around £60,000 for St Gemma’s Hospice patient care.

he Leeds’ 2023 bid team recently put out a call for people all over Leeds to support the European Capital of Culture bid by pledging their support online at www.leeds2023.co.uk and actively spreading the word via social media using the hashtag #MakeLeeds2023. The deadline for the submission is 27th October – so the countdown is on and an exciting programme of events, designed to generate further momentum, has been launched. The European Capital of Culture bid presents a huge opportunity for Leeds to shout about its diverse population and culture and reposition its image. “Culture actually brings a phenomenal amount of money into the city”, said Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance and Chair of the Leeds 2023 Independent Steering Group. “With the changes that the whole country is likely to face in the coming years, Leeds needs to stay connected to Europe. We need to raise the city’s profile and culture will help to do this.”
Here at NLL we would be really surprised if Leeds didn’t get it! Leeds is a fantastic city and has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Today, all the universities, cultural institutions and numerous businesses are working together to forward the city’s bid. And, despite the huge funding challenges that Leeds City Council has had to face, the Council has enthusiastically thrown its weight behind the bid. “We want to ensure our bid is firmly focused on the people of Leeds”, said Sharon, who is also unbelievably proud to have been voted Yorkshire Woman of the Year. “The current population represents 140 ethnic groups and 170 languages! A successful bid will create a lasting legacy, not only by implementing positive change by bringing these communities together and celebrating our diversity, but also by attracting national and international funding and events to the city, and being a catalyst for growth and development.”
Tickets are £48 a head, and include a four-course meal, fizz reception, live band, and a whole host of fundraising activities - including Live and Silent Auctions with some amazing prices. Then you can take to the dancefloor and party the night away to music from ‘Drum Radio’. St Gemma’s Hospice, based in Moortown, provides outstanding end of life care to over 3,000 patients across Leeds every year. It’s a friendly, warm and safe place at the heart of the community with a large range of expert services to support patients, their families and friends. Kindly sponsored by Lawcris Panel Products, the annual St Gemma’s Winter Ball is definitely not one to be missed. Hospice Ambassador Malcolm Moss calls the event ‘the best fun you’ll have all year!’ So, join the party to help St Gemma’s Hospice continue to care. BBC Look North presenter, Keeley Donovan, is to host the BBC regional current affairs programme ‘Inside Out’ from September, taking over from Paul Hudson who returns to his main job as Look North’s weather presenter full time. elieve it or not, Keeley started her broadcast career at just 14 years old when members of her theatre group auditioned for a local digital channel and she found herself talking about GCSE revision. By 16 she had decided that that was definitely what she wanted to do. Having racked up degrees in Media Studies and Journalism, she started out as a journalist with BBC Hull. Not long after, she moved to BBC Leeds, becoming one of the region’s main weather and news presenters in 2005. Having always had a strong interest in science, she jumped at the opportunity to present the weather when a vacancy came up, taking a science course through Open University to get to grips with the technicalities of weather. “Climate is fascinating”, she told us, “especially here in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire – with such a varied landscape the weather is never boring!” Since then she has reported for ‘Inside Out’ and presented the daytime programme ‘Break-In Britain’, and last year she launched the BBC One programme ‘Countryfile Diaries’ with John Craven. “We are all delighted that Keeley will be the new face of the

programme”, said Nicola Addyman, Editor of BBC Inside Out Yorkshire & Lincolnshire. “She has been part of the Inside Out family for a number of years, reporting on diverse subjects – from investigations into abuse of prisoners, through to efforts to protect the red squirrel. She is an accomplished and versatile presenter.” With the BBC for twelve years now, Keeley has become a familiar face. “I am so looking forward to presenting ‘Inside Out’”, she said. “I already know it’s a great team and it will be so nice to be working with them regularly. I am particularly looking forward to getting out and meeting people. I love working with people. I have built up a rapport with them through Look North. They know me and I hope will want to tell me their stories.” Keeley will also continue with Countryfile Diaries and she won’t disappear completely from Look North either. “I’m really excited”, she said. “ It’s going to be busy but I will get to handle a huge variety of stories, and from all over the country and I can’t wait to get started!” Inside Out Yorkshire & Lincolnshire will air on BBC One on Mondays, starting on 4th September.

Art History Course Focuses on The Renaissance Art historian Dr Paul Street is looking forward to another successful course starting in September. “I took early retirement from Leeds University’, he told us, “and then decided to offer art history classes in Leeds and Harrogate. These have proved very successful, with a number of students returning year after year. “Last year we studied 20th century art, so this year we will be going back in time and exploring perhaps my favourite period in art history – the Renaissance. Rather than looking only at the Italian Renaissance, we will also be studying the art produced in Flanders, Germany and France and exploring the relationships between these different societies
and the art they produced. All the great artists will be examined: Raphael, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Van Eyck, Durer, Titian, Piero Della Francesca and many others. All the classes are fully illustrated with slides. No previous knowledge is required and there is no written work. So, if you have always wanted to learn more about this, perhaps the greatest period in western art, this could be just the course for you.”

Phoenix at Home: A Celebration of Female Choreographers
Photo: Brian Slater
Phoenix Dance Theatre presents ‘A Celebration of Female Choreographers’ at Stanley and Audrey Burton Theatre from 27th – 30th September, showcasing the exceptional female talent within the company. ed by Artistic Director and Yorkshire Woman of the Year, Sharon Watson, the production is a response to last year’s discussion around the lack of female choreographers. “Whilst early dance is populated with women, the higher up the ladder you go the fewer women you see”, said Sharon. “Phoenix at Home is a celebration of the women we have in the company. It’s important that we shout about this and show young women coming through that it can – and should - be done.” The evening includes an excerpt from a major new piece choreographed by Sharon.
‘Windrush: Movement of the People’ celebrates the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the SS Empire Windrush, which brought the first generation of Caribbean immigrants to England in 1948. “Windrush highlights both the struggles and the good times the Jamaican community experienced during those early years”, said Sharon. “It’s an uplifting production and has a great soundtrack – everything from Calypso to RnB. It premières at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in February next year.” Company dancer and choreographer Sandrine Monin recently won two One Dance UK awards, which was a real coup
for the company. She will present her first commission,‘Calyx’, inspired by the book of poems ‘The Flowers of Evil’ by Charles Baudelaire. It explores the themes of beauty, desire and decadence. The show also presents an original solo by dancer Carmen Vazquez Marfil - a collaboration between dancer Vanessa Pang and Rehearsal Director Tracy Tinker set in the audition room. Plus, dancers Natalie Alleston and Vanessa Pang present a new piece, choreographed for the rising stars of the Phoenix Youth Academy. THE SHED CREW Join The Shed Crew in Ashtrayland, as Red Ladder Theatre, supported by West Yorkshire Playhouse, presents an immersive performance in Albion Electric Warehouse on South Accommodation Road, from 21st September to 1st October. hen Chop meets charismatic Urban – an illiterate 12-yearold but with a real talent for words, and a penchant for glue-sniffing and firebombing - he’s brought into the inner-circle of The Shed Crew, a posse of dispossessed kids, runaways and joyriders, seeking sanctuary from the mean streets of their inner-city estate in a shed. When mum’s a junkie, your dad might as well be dead and grown-ups are all nonces, grasses and greedy-bastards, The Crew is the only family you need.
Their story explodes like a firework
Award-winning playwright Kevin Fegan has adapted Bernard Hare’s searingly honest memoir, Urban Grimshaw and the Shed Crew, into a new play which captures the explosive energy of this darkly funny story of former social worker ‘Chop’ and his remarkable bond with Urban and his friends.
“Chop and Urban’s relationship is like a buddy movie: a strange pairing of a middle-aged man and a 12-yearold boy who go on a wild trip, with the Shed Crew as its chorus”, said Kevin. “Their story explodes like a firework, and I needed to capture the energy of these feral kids. It’s the raw honesty that I most admire, and the humanity that you warm to - Bernard Hare tells the good and the bad in his book. It’s not about how we can go marching in and help – it’s what we can take from these kids and their experiences.” Bernard returned to his home estate in Leeds in the 90s after becoming disillusioned as a social worker in London. It’s here that he
met ‘Urban’ and The Shed Crew. Often colluding in their wildness but the only grown-up they trusted – ‘Chop’ became their unlikely mentor, introducing them to the arts, and learning far more from them in return. He decided to write his memoir to show the reality of life for the socially excluded, giving a voice to the voiceless. Kevin had met and befriended Bernard before setting out to write the play. Taking the unusual approach of writing in verse infuses the play with a certain rhythm which underpins the action. Having given Kevin the thumbs-up, Bernard let him get on with it, meeting him again only at the end to read it through – another thumbs-up. Originally planned as a theatre production, it soon became clear that this was not a play for traditional staging. Instead, it was decided it should be an immersive experience. Albion Warehouse was suggested –
this was no vast empty space but was scattered with turbines, workbenches and huge boxed up industrial fridges. In amongst all this a performance area had to be created – a den for the characters. The audience would have to become part of that world. “There have been massive leaps forward and huge changes since Bernard Hare’s book was written, and we’re not looking back to the past in bringing it to the stage”, said Red Ladder’s artistic director, Rod Dixon. “As one of Britain’s leading radical theatre companies this story is one that Red Ladder still needs to tell - as vast sections of society across Britain exist in extreme poverty; forgotten communities living parallel lives in austerity against the glossy veneer of commerce and consumerism. “It’s important that the play not be seen as voyeuristic, it’s not poverty porn. The aim was not highlight how the underclass lives. We are all a tissue away from that kind of chaos.
The play shows the human side of things and we’re thrilled to have the Albion Electrics warehouse as a venue in which to immerse people in this world; one from which we can all learn about ‘survival’, family and the power of humanity and the arts.” Red Ladder has built in a considerable amount of public engagement around the production, working closely with Leeds Poverty Truth Commission and Simon on the Streets. Creative writing, photography workshops, and discussions are taking place at Leeds Libraries’ Space 2 and West Yorkshire Playhouse’s First Floor. They plan to capture voices in the workshops and build these into the sound design. Simon on the Streets is preparing a photographic exhibition, which will be displayed at Albion Warehouse. Tickets can be booked through West Yorkshire Playhouse on 0113 213 7700 or www.wyp.org.uk

‘The Real Princesses of Yorkshire’ is a photography project by artist Maria Spadafora at Arts@ Trinity, Holy Trinity Church, Boar Lane, Leeds, from 11th – 22nd September. The exhibition offers a different take on the fairy tale princess, a figure that has always been a source of irritation for Maria. Here she takes strong, talented Yorkshire women and dresses them in big frocks and tiaras! The photos poke a little fun whilst celebrating the diversity of real people. Nobody is waiting to be saved by Prince Charming and no one is smiling. Northern Ballet Gears Up for New Season orthern Ballet is poised to present an ambitious season of new work, performing ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’; A Celebration of Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Master Choreographer; and ‘The Little Mermaid’ at Yorkshire venues. The Season launches with its adaptation of John Boyne’s bestselling novel ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’, which tells the story of an unlikely friendship blossoming during World War II – a child’s innocent curiosity leads to a devastating conclusion. Choreographed by Daniel de Andrade, Northern Ballet’s Artistic Associate, it is at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 5th – 9th September.
An ambitious season of new work
‘A Celebration of Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Master Choreographer’ is at the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford from 5th – 7th October. One of the leading choreographers of his generation, Sir Kenneth MacMillan enjoyed a career spanning nearly four decades during which he created almost 100 works. Northern Ballet presents three of MacMillan’s most famous short works – ‘Las Hermanas’, a tense psychological drama about five sisters and the consequences that follow a life of harsh repression; ‘Gloria’, inspired by Vera Brittain’s wartime memoir ‘Testament of Youth’; and ‘Concerto’, a dazzling classical piece set to music by Shostakovich. Northern Ballet’s new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ will be at Leeds Grand Theatre from 5th – 17th December. Choreographed by Artistic Director David Nixon, it tells the story of a young mermaid who is willing to give up everything in search of love and the desire for a human soul. In addition, Northern Ballet will bring back its first children’s ballet ‘Ugly Duckling’. Created especially to introduce young children to ballet, it will be at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from 23rd – 28th October.

A search for premises started in earnest. It was during this residency that Liz met Eddy Lascelles of the Harewood Food & Drink Project on the Harewood Estate. They immediately hit it off and found that, when it came to food, they were definitely on the same page. Here was an opportunity to source fabulous, fresh ingredients right on their doorstep. Harewood Food & Drink Project could not only supply heritage fruit and vegetables (from a kitchen garden that had been in constant use since the 1750s), but

Before taking part in Masterchef Liz had never thought about actually cooking commercially but as soon as she walked into the professional kitchen she felt at home. Encouraged by the judges’ recommendations, she sought out more experience, and met Mark Owens at The Box Tree in Ilkley.
“We quickly found we had lots in common with our approach”, said Liz, “not least our shared passion for great food, and even better service. It got Mark and I thinking that there could be a place for something else on the Leeds restaurant scene.” W orking with Mark as consultant, Liz secured a

Leeds Women’s Aid Ask the Researcher Seeks Volunteers at Biomedical Research Unit Leeds Women’s Aid needs more volunteers to help with the dayto-day running of its charity shop in Horsforth. Opened in 2015, the store has received fantastic support from the community and is becoming increasingly busy. The charity is looking for both front-of-shop volunteers (serving customers, merchandising, accepting donations), and stock-room staff (sorting donations, hanging, steaming and pricing clothes). No experience is necessary, just the desire to support Leeds’ largest women’s charity. Volunteers can look forward to flexible hours; training and support; a friendly working environment; the opportunity to gain valuable new skills; and the chance to make a real difference to the lives of women and children at risk from domestic violence and abuse. News From Your Councillors Cllr
DAN COHEN Alwoodley
September brings the annual treat of Back to School! Whether it is the broken quiet after the long Summer holiday, or parental excitement at being free from the kids between 9am and 3.30pm, the first few weeks in September always presents a peak in terms of complaints about parking around Alwoodley’s schools.
We all know that parking around every school in the city is a real challenge, especially at drop off and pick up time. So, I would like to repeat my annual plea to parents – please park, not only legally but also as considerately as possible. And, to residents around schools – please remember that the vast majority of parents do park considerately. Where parking is genuinely inappropriate, reporting it to the local policing team will ensure the incident is logged and actioned. Many thanks for the excellent feedback on the Speeds Indication Devices (SIDS) we funded. These two devices (currently on Shadwell Lane and King Lane) have been received very positively. In fact, so well have they been received, that we have been persuaded to invest in additional SIDS so we can cover more of the ward. We are looking at buying another three or four, to be in place by Christmas, and would welcome your suggestions as to which roads would be good candidates for them.
Finally, a friend of mine told me of an initiative he has heard of, ‘Coffee with your Councillor’. The idea is that a resident invites some of their neighbours to come round for coffee and a local councillor goes along too. This gives residents an opportunity to meet and chat to their councillor and to hear first hand what councillors do. It also gives you and your neighbours a chance to raise any concerns or ideas you may have. If you think this is a good idea for Alwoodley, or, even better, if you would like to host the first ‘Coffee with your Councillor’, please let me know. Remember, for any and all local issues, Cllr Neil Buckley, Cllr Peter Harrand and myself are all here to help.

Have a Field Day!
‘Have a Field Day’ is a national event that seeks to encourage local communities to celebrate their greenspaces. A nature walk on the old Yorkshire Bank Sports Ground on Shadwell Lane, was an opportunity for the new residents of the ‘Parklands’ housing to meet their neighbours. It was also a chance to explore this natural grassland, identify the wildflowers and try to spot any wildlife (butterflies and insects were in abundance but the mammals were well hidden!) In September work will start on creating the much-anticipated new Moortown Park and although this lovely natural area of greenspace will disappear, the new park will retain large areas of natural grass and wildflowers. A ‘Friends of Moortown Park’ group has been set up to look after the park in the future. If you would like further information on the plans for the new park, or details on how to join the ‘Friends’ group, please visit the Moortown Community Group’s website -

he buzzard is the UK’s most widespread bird of prey, now breeding in every county of the UK. It is a large bird, with broad rounded wings, a wide Photo: Ben head and short neck, and a Hall short broad tail. Its wings RSPBare what is called ‘fingered’, images. meaning that the individual com feather tips are visible at the wing’s edge, like fingers on the end of a hand. Its plumage varies a great deal, but a common type is medium brown with a pale crescent on the breast, and pale wing tips. Its call is a mewing sound, not dissimilar to a cat, but louder, and it can be heard at any time of a year.
Buzzards can be seen in a variety of different habitats, but prefer areas where there are large trees or crags for nesting. They are quite easy to spot, either soaring over wooded hillsides, or perched in a tree or on a fence post. They eat small mammals,
especially voles and rabbits, birds and carrion, even insects and earthworms, when other prey is scarce. They are very territorial, and each territory contains several nest sites, which are used successively in different years by the resident pair. Historically, the buzzard population has been adversely affected by organochloride pesticides (now banned), and illegal shooting, but it has since recovered to a more sustainable level.

An ideal time to do many garden jobs whilst the weather is still pleasant In the veg patch
Pumpkin and squash will ripen better if some of the larger leaves are removed now
This is also a perfect month to preserve some herbs for winter. The traditional way is to pick sprigs of herbs such as thyme or oregano and hang them indoors to dry. Herbs like mint store well when chopped, mixed with a little water and frozen in ice cube trays, whilst chives, basil, dill and fennel can be added to softened butter, rolled to form a log and chilled. A slice of herb butter is an excellent way to add subtle flavour to grilled food.
Planting Biennials There are usually many crops still to harvest in September, but some will now be finished and ready to clear away. When you remove your bean and pea plants, just cut them off at the bottom and leave the roots to break down in the soil to release nitrogen for the crops you grow there next year. Pumpkin and squash will ripen better if some of the larger leaves are removed now, to allow the sun to reach the fruit. If the fruit is resting on the soil it’s a good idea to slip a tile under them to stop them rotting on wet soil. They will still need watering regularly if the weather is dry. There is still time to sow seeds for Swiss chard, winter spinach, rocket and autumn salad leaves.

are really valuable for Spring colour including foxgloves, wallflowers, forget me nots and honesty. If you sowed seed in the Spring you can plant the little plants in their flowering positions now. If not, you can buy the plants now and put them in ready to enjoy their flowers next year. Pinching out the tips of wallflowers as you plant will encourage bushier plants.
Make the Grass look Greener It is time for some Autumn care for your lawn. It’s best to do this at a warm, damp time of the year when the grass will benefit from being aerated with a garden fork, and raked to remove any moss and ‘thatch’ (dead roots and runners). For larger lawns there are aerating and scarifying machines available to buy or hire. You can give your lawn an autumn feed now too.

FILM
REVIEW
A GHOST STORY DIRECTED BY: DAVID LOWERY STARRING: CASEY AFFLECK, ROONEY MARA CERT: 12A RUNNING TIME: 92 MINS ith this quiet and contemplative piece, writerdirector David Lowery has crafted something quite unique, hauntingly beautiful and unexpectedly powerful. One could argue that the film’s title is only partially accurate; there’s certainly a ghost but not a great deal of story. The film begins with a glimpse into the home life of couple C (Casey Affleck) and M (Rooney Mara) as they’re preparing to move house. Shortly and abruptly thereafter C is killed in a car accident, of which we see only the aftermath. We see M at the hospital identifying his lifeless body which, when left alone, rises from the table draped in a sheet and begins to wander through the hospital corridors. There’s a moment when an illuminated gateway opens up before C’s ghost, perhaps offering passage to the next world, but he declines and instead heads for home. Returning to the house, he seems motivated to reconnect with his bereaved lover but can only passively observe as she works through her grief, gets on with routine daily life and prepares to leave the home they shared behind. Before long M is gone, but C’s ghost remains; a melancholy, mournful presence haunting the place of their shared history.
Exceptionally lit and beautifully photographed the film offers up a host of striking and memorable images
He continues to move through the house as it subsequently becomes home to others, mostly silently and unobtrusively bearing witness to the world in which he is no longer an active participant. No longer tethered to the world but still somehow rooted in place, he seems to traverse space and time, perhaps seeking meaning or some ultimate reconciliation so that his soul may finally rest. A Ghost Story takes you along an unpredictable path. At the beginning we’re led to assume that this is to be a rumination on love, loss and grief but, while these themes are touched on and underscore the action, the film’s focus and scope pull back and widen to encompass broader existential musings. As we move through the world, what and who do we touch, and how? What remains of us when we pass on? Is it memory alone? What of legacy? What of love? Is life as we know it defined by transience and impermanence or does something of us persist? These considerations are at the heart of A Ghost Story and it approaches them in a mesmerizing, hypnotic manner. Impressively, the film easily clears what some might imagine to be its trickiest hurdle – namely that its central motif is a ghost depicted by a man covered in a bedsheet, complete with eye holes. It could be assumed that such a laughably hackneyed cliché of a spectral image would lend the film an inescapable note of absurdity that could only undermine its emotional and philosophical integrity. Actually, not a bit of it.
The questionable costume choice works more effectively than anyone would have any right to expect and, by all accounts, it really is Casey Affleck under there for the most part. Far from being absurd, the be-sheeted ghost is an arresting, somber and disarmingly affecting presence.
Technically, the film is an outstanding piece of work. Exceptionally lit and beautifully photographed it offers up a host of striking and memorable images. It is presented in 1.33:
1 aspect ratio, which means a perfect square frame complete with rounded ‘vignette’ corners. The format recalls that of old photographs, and is often so slow moving that it resembles still photography as much as a motion picture. While watching I was reminded of the work of some of my favorite American photographers, lying somewhere between William Eggleston’s documentarian approach and the high-concept surrealism of Gregory Crewdson. The film also benefits from an excellent score by musician/ composer Daniel Hart, creating a perfect marriage of sound and image. Languid and meditative, not driven by plot and with pacing that could sometimes be called glacial, not everyone will find A Ghost Story particularly accessible, but if one gives themselves over to it, it’s an entrancing experience that stirs both the mind and the heart.

he Howard Assembly Room at Opera North continues to offer and exciting and varied programme this Autumn/Winter, including: Trio Da Kali (22nd Oct) unites three outstanding musicians from Southern Mali who come from a long line of distinguished griots (hereditary musicians). Singer Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté is the daughter of legendary Kassé Mady Diabaté; bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté is the eldest son of the world-renowned Bassekou Kouyaté; and the group is led, uniquely, by the virtuoso balafon of Fode Lassana Diabaté, as heard on the classic AfroCubism album. Senegalese kora player and singer Seckou Keita performs with Cuban jazz pianist and composer Omar Sosa (16th Nov), celebrating their first album together, ‘Transparent Water’. Their exploratory music is rooted in improvisation and brings together influences from across five continents.
Grammy-nominated American pianist and composer Uri Caine gives a rare solo concert on 2nd November. He returns to some of the seminal readings of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, as well as reimaginings of pieces by Mozart and Mahler, mixed up with jazz standards and his own original compositions. Caine uses classical music as a ‘springboard for improvisation’, and his collaborations extend from the Beaux Arts Trio to John Zorn, from the Woody Herman Band to the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. Brechtian Punk Cabaret trio The Tiger Lillies (13th Dec) bring the seedy sounds of bygone Soho to Leeds for a Christmas show with an edge. Their new album, ‘Cold Night in Soho’, is a series of snapshots of a vanished world of drinking dens, clip joints and the starched soldiers of the Salvation Army on a mission to save souls: a place where the gutter is never far away. Andy Parsons urges people to put on their lucky pants and party shoes, and get out for the night to see his show, ‘Peak Bullsh*t’, on Wednesday 20th. And, comedian, poet, improviser and TV stalwart Phill Jupitus , will entertain with tales, laughs and diversions on Thursday 28th when he will drags laughs out of the chaos of his own life and the uncertain world that surrounds it in ‘Juplicity’.
As well as both editions of North Leeds Life, you’ll also find many more interesting stories and events on our website, that have either arrived too late for inclusion, or we simply ran out of room in the magazine. We are adding new stories nearly every day. So don’t miss out!

Sarah Tackles A Walk Montane Lakeland 100 for St Vincent’s Around
Eccup Reservoir for St Vincent’s
n 28th July, solicitor Sarah Smith set off on the Montane Lakeland 100 race, hoping to cover 105 miles in under 40 hours. The route is in the Lake District National Park, starting in Coniston and working its way around via Seathwaite, Boot, Wasdale Head, Black Sail Pass, Buttermere, Braithwaite, Blencathra, Dockray, Dalemain, Howtown, Fusedale, Haweswater, Mardale Head, Kentmere, Ambleside, Chapel Stile, Tilberthwaite and finally back to Coniston. It includes 6,856 metres of ascent, and the weather alternated between rain, a little sun, then more rain and wind. She completed the route in 37 hours and 23 minutes. Sarah was raising money for St Vincent’s Support Centre in Leeds, a charity that supports people whose lives are blighted by poverty. It offers practical and personal support to the community in many ways.
“I have seen the difference the work of this charity makes to people’s lives”, said Sarah, “and I know that every pound donated will really make a difference. This is a national charity but the money I raise will go to the project in Leeds.” The Leeds branch has a charity shop that sells good quality clothes and furniture, a food bank, support with job seeking, IT training, advice on benefits, and there is also a café, a place for people to meet. The facilities provided by St Vincent’s (which also offers training and roles to volunteers) massively improves people’s lives. The project also provides help for asylum seekers and immigrants arriving in Leeds, enabling them to learn English, and helping them to attend meetings at their children’s schools and become part of the community. Sarah recently exceeded her £350 sponsorship target but would love to give it one last push – if you would like to contribute, please visit her JustGiving page
A sponsored walk to raise funds for St Vincent’s is planned for Sunday 24th September. The walk will be around Eccup Reservoir and promises to be a great day of fun and fundraising. There is a choice of two routes, either 7.5 miles or 3.5 miles; both have midway stops for refreshments and toilet breaks. The short walk is wheelchair and pushchair friendly with activities for children along the way. Walkers should meet at St Paul’s Church Hall on King Lane (LS17 7ES) for registration at 1.30pm for 2pm start. All sponsorship will go directly to community support projects in Leeds. St Vincent’s Support Centre and St Jude’s Furniture Store are Special Projects of the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP), providing essential help and support for families in Leeds living in poverty. For more information, contact Natalie on 0113 248 4126 or Natalie. tiu@stvincents-svp.org.uk
Matty Lee Takes World Championship Silver atty Lee (19) from the City of Leeds Diving Club recently won Silver at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest. His first event was the 10m Platform Mixed Synchro with diving partner Lois Toulson from Huddersfield. Facing the top 17 mixed 10m divers in the world, Matty and Lois held their nerve, slowly moving up the field with consistent diving to eventually claim a World Championship Silver Medal! This Silver was one of the only three medals won by GB at the Championships – they were just pipped to the post by the Chinese.
Matty also competed in the 10m Individual Platform, along with fellow GB diver Tom Daley. In a prelim against 42 of the best divers in the world he secured a seventh place, taking him into the semifinals where he moved up into fifth place. The final was won by Tom Daley, but Matty achieved his goal of making a World Championship Individual Final for the first time. Earlier this year, Matty held off two Chinese divers to take 10m Platform Gold in the FINA Diving Grand Prix (Puerto Rico). In the European Championships (Kiev) he claimed a10m Individual Platform Silver, and with partner Pictured: Lois Toulson & Matty Lee Lois became 10m Mixed European Champions taking the Gold! He also gained the title of British 10m Platform Champion at the British Championships.
Well done Matty and Lois!

Shaheen Gives Community Cohesion a Sporting Chance een swimmer Shaheen Alghofari (17) is well aware of the benefits of regular exercise, so he jumped at the chance to help youngsters in his community reap the same rewards. Shaheen, who trains most days with the City of Leeds Swimming Club, applied to the volunteering organisation vInspired for funding to run circuit training sessions for young Syrians. His application was successful and he used the £500 grant to purchase equipment. A Y-12 student at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), Shaheen recruiting a team of volunteers from his fellow students, promoting the sessions through Facebook and obtaining venues free of charge. The hour and a half training sessions at Ebor Gardens Community Centre and Hyde Park Methodist Church regularly attracted
around 15 Syrian teenagers, all working hard to learn English and study after the trauma of leaving their home country. The benefits to participants and volunteers were beyond Shaheen’s wildest expectations. “Most volunteering has an impact on experience but this had a personal impact”, said Shaheen. “We’d do the exercises and halfway through we’d have a break and just talk - that was unplanned but it was good. I felt it was good for us all to talk to each other and learn about our different cultures.” Initially an eight week project, the sessions were so popular that Shaheen
is continuing to offer them whenever he can find a venue. He is also applying for funding for another project, which will offer community sessions to learn the traditional Arabic dance ‘dabke’.

Open Day Saturday 7th October, 10am – 12pm. For further information and to arrange an appointment, call 0113 275 2670.
Excellence and Value from BGS Bradford Grammar School (BGS) provides every opportunity for its Junior, Senior and Sixth Form pupils to embrace academic, sporting and creative excellence within an aspirational, caring environment in which happiness is the key to an individual’s success. With its impressive ‘value added’ provision, academic excellence is available to all. Ranked as ‘one of the ten best value private schools in the UK’ (Telegraph) with a ‘first-class, academic and outward looking approach’ (Good Schools Guide), BGS is one of the UK’s leading independent schools, providing an ‘outstanding education’ (ISI 2012) for more than 1,050 girls and boys aged six to 18. Terrifically successful at A and AS Levels, BGS was recognised as having the highest University
admission points in West Yorkshire. In 2016 A Level results were outstanding with 55 per cent of all exams awarded A*/A grades – compared with 25.8 per cent nationally. It also had a record breaking 46 per cent of all GCSEs awarded A*, with 71 per cent of all exams taken awarded A* or A grades, well over three times higher than the national average. Outside the classroom sport plays a fundamental part of a broad, well-rounded education for girls and boys, building character, camaraderie and school spirit. Arts subjects may be under threat nationally, but they are thriving at BGS. The school embraces and supports the arts through music, drama and theatre studies.
Former pupils of the school include Olympic heroes Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, Team GB cyclist AbbyMae Parkinson, actress Georgie Henley, England rugby legend Charlie Hodgson and artist David Hockney. For more, please visit bradfordgrammar.com/ happiness

As schools across the country gear up for the start of a new year, the principal at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) is emphasising the importance of teaching pupils how to be resilient. “We gear ourselves up for success all the time, and as parents and teachers, we encourage this in our children too”, said Sue Woodroofe, Principal. “Recently, there is a lot of research about the lack of resilience in young people today – the fear of failure is greater than it has ever been. We need to focus on the importance of resilience and the need to ‘have a go’, so that they are not deterred by setbacks.” With the current school exam load and assessments, children and
families can feel pressured and out of their comfort zone. “School should always be a safe place, including being a safe place in which to fail or make mistakes”, she said. “If pupils are worried about the pressures of life, we aim to make sure that they know they may face tough times, but we are here to support them. In my experience, they will be stronger for it and might achieve things they never thought possible!”
Former GSAL student Caroline Newton, now in her final year studying philosophy at Durham University, agrees. “There were times at school when I was definitely pushed beyond my comfort zone, but knowing I had the support of staff and fellow pupils helped me to take risks. Have a go. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.”
Montessori Nurseries
Help Children to Flourish
“I’ve spent many years feeling rightfully amazed at how children in these earliest of years learn such complex tasks, in such a definite and confident way”, said Helen Gration, Founder, Yorkshire Montessori Nursery. “‘Of course I can feed myself, teach my body to walk, learn about my home and talk’. Of course!” To be independent is what parents must teach their children and it is what Dr Maria Montessori saw, tested and introduced over 100 years ago. Her most important discovery for every educator who followed was that children learn in a fundamentally different way to adults. And that is why Montessori nurseries reflect that method of learning.

Think about how you could begin to learn another language – what complex connections you’d have to make in your brain. And yet each child simply absorbs their new language spontaneously, along with grammar, accents, idioms, humour, questioning, slang, intonation. The Montessori environment is filled with items to excite and entice, to teach and demonstrate. In this way, ‘absorption’ is instinctive for each individual child, as they freely explore and learn as they go about their business. Their knowledge is limitless and their ability is so clear to see. Montessori nurseries are here to help your children to flourish.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown & Roundhay areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor
in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,
which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
