Wheatfields Hospice presents ‘An Evening with Amanda Owen – The Yorkshire Shepherdess’ on Saturday 27th October 7.30pm at Otley Parish Church.

Amanda has been seen by millions on ITV's ‘The Dales’ and on Channel 5 in Ben Fogle’s ‘New Lives in the Wild’, living a life that has almost disappeared, a life ruled by the seasons and her animals. A farmer's wife and shepherdess, she lives with her husband Clive and nine children at Ravenseat, a 2,000-acre hill farm above Keld in North Yorkshire.

She evokes the peace of Winter, when they can be cut off by snow without electricity or running water, the happiness of Spring and the lambing season, and the backbreaking tasks of Summer - inspiring us all to look at the countryside and those who work in it with new appreciation.

Life&Style Heritage Open Days Heritage Open Days, co-ordinated locally by Leeds Civic Trust, runs from Thursday 6th – Sunday 9th and Thursday 13th – Sunday 16th September, offering free access to visitors. Across the city there are talks, walks and exhibitions and there really is ‘something for everyone’. One of the themes this year is ‘Extraordinary Women’ – head to M&S Archive to hear about Flora Solomon who did so much to improve conditions for female workers; Rachel Reeves MP will champion Alice Bacon, Yorkshire’s first female MP, at Armley Library; Leeds Industrial Museum’s exhibition features Queens of Industry; St Margaret of Antioch is the subject of an exhibition at Left Bank; and, ‘Some Remarkable Women of Lawnswood Cemetery’ will be introduced at Weetwood Hall. At Leeds Civic Trust, the ‘Extraordinary Women on Blue Plaques’ exhibition brings together women from across the city who achieved great things.

Some significant anniversaries are also marked this year – there’s a ‘Queen Victoria Visits Little Woodhouse 1858’ walk; Ruth Martin, who curated the recent City Museum Chippendale exhibition talks about ‘Thomas Chippendale and his Work’; talks by author Dr Patrick Eyres, ‘The Yorkshire Red Books of Humphry Repton’, at Oulton Hall and Gotts Park Mansion celebrate this influential landscape designer.

Volunteer Opportunity! Be a part of one of the largest, free, light festivals in the country! Light Night Leeds is an illuminated, multi-arts festival, which will take over the city centre on 4th/5th October. A host of cultural venues will open their doors late into the evening, and artists will transform indoor and outdoor spaces with exciting interactive installations.

The Leeds Library opened 250 years ago and will host an exhibition showing ‘Images of Old Leeds’. There’s a double anniversary at Leeds General Infirmary, 70 years of the NHS and 150 years of the foundation of the original building. It was opened in the same year as St Chad’s Parish Church in Far Headingley. Many of the events commemorate the centenary of WW1, and there’ll be talks and exhibitions across the city, including at Fulneck, Shadwell Library, Pudsey Town Hall, Yeadon Town Hall and Leeds Beckett University (where there’ll be a range of other events too). Rawdon’s Quaker Meeting House and Bramhope’s Puritan Chapel both have fascinating histories, as has All Saints’ Church in Otley. And, Otley Courthouse volunteers will be giving tours of the building and explaining their latest project. There’ll be a talk in Guiseley about cloth manufacturer Abraham Moon’s link with the world of fashion, and in Farsley, a tour of Sunny Bank Mills will show how it continues to innovate. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Dr Kersten Hall Florence Bell (1913-2000) Pioneering Scientist and unsung heroine of DNA Standing in the natural history section of Leeds City Museum is a curious structure made of two chains of coloured plastic balls twisting around each other. This is DNA, the genetic material, and the discovery of its structure by the Cambridge scientists James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953 was one of the biggest landmarks in science. But few people realise that, thanks to a young scientist called Florence Bell, Leeds has a very important connection to this ground-breaking discovery. Bell grew up in London and attended Haberdashers’ Aske Girls’ School in Acton. Here she showed an impressive range of talents including being able to speak several languages and play the piano, as well as enjoying a range of sports. Thanks to her formidable mathematical ability she won a place at Girton College, Cambridge and after graduation she applied these skills to working with a new technique known as X-ray crystallography. This used X-rays to determine the arrangement of atoms in crystals and had first been discovered by the Leeds-based physicist Sir William Bragg and his son Lawrence. After leaving Cambridge, Bell worked with Lawrence Bragg in Manchester before moving to Leeds where she lived on Beckett Park Drive, Headingley. Here she worked as a research assistant to the pioneering physicist William Astbury, who was using these new X-ray methods to study the molecular structure of wool fibres for the local textile industries and, although wool might not have seemed to be the most exciting subject for study, Bell's work was to have profound consequences that would go far beyond the textile mills of West Yorkshire. She showed for the first time that X-rays could be used to solve not only the shape of wool molecules, but also of DNA and in so doing she laid the foundations for James Watson and Francis Crick’s later discovery. Bell was one of the first scientists to recognise the importance of DNA at a time when it was thought to be of little interest and she helped to pioneer the new science that became known as ‘molecular biology’. But when she gave a lecture at a conference held by the Institute of Physics in Leeds in 1939, it

was not her ground-breaking work that caught the attention of the local press but the fact that she was a female scientist! In 1942, Bell was summoned for War Service where she applied her skills as a physicist working in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force on the development of airborne radar systems. Her departure came as a tremendous blow to Astbury's work. He wrote in vain to the War Office pleading that she be allowed to continue working in his laboratory and the University of Leeds kept her post open in the hope that she might return after the war, but by then forces far more powerful than science had intervened in her life. She had met and fallen for James Sawyer, a captain in the US Army whom she married at St. Mary's Church, Ambleside in December 1942 before leaving Britain for a new life in the USA. In the US she worked first for the British Air Commission in Washington D.C. and then as a research chemist for a petroleum company in Texas before giving up her career to look after her family. But her career in science had taken its toll on her health. Most likely as a result of working with unshielded X-ray sources, she found that she was unable to have children of her own and so she devoted the rest of her life to raising four young children whom she had adopted. When she died, her official occupation was recorded as having been a housewife, but she deserves to be remembered for the important scientific work she did whilst at Leeds – an achievement of which the city can be very proud.

Adel Players’ Season Opens with Ayckborn Comedy Adel Players’ 2018/2019 season kicks off with an Ayckbourn comedy, ‘Time of My Life’, at Adel Memorial Hall from 24th – 27th October. Set during the recession of the 1990s, this is a specifically northern Ayckbourn play, one with Yorkshire speech patterns, plain speaking and blunt humour. It is all the funnier for being so close to home, though the behaviour and foibles are universal.

Leeds Photographic Society starts its 2018/2019 Winter Programme in September with ‘An Introduction to Astrophotography’ with Dr. Lee Sproats, covering some basics of astronomy, and looking at techniques and methods of night sky photography. Giles Rocholl, will present a trip through his 38 years as a professional photographer from newspapers to landscapes. In ‘A Different Approach for the 21st Century’ Neil Wittman demonstrates how he gained his Royal Photographic Society qualifications. John Gardner’s theme will be ‘Another Day at the Office’ covering many aspects of his commercial photography. And, capturing everyday scenes together with a fresh look at classic ones are Lizzie Shepherd’s themes. Well known photographer Terry Donnelly will show some of his awardwinning images. Steve Gosling provides mindful insights into taking photographs that are more about communication than technical perfection. Taking an

image through into a fantasy creation is Andrea Hargreaves fascinating topic. And, Mark Gilligan will share the benefit of his broad career covering a variety of genres. There will also be illustrated talks by members, as well as in-house and interclub competitions.

Ayckbourn begins the story in the present but, as the tale unfolds, he moves the action to the past and onwards to the future. It is an observational comedy that has a dark side. The action takes place in a family-run restaurant which could be Greek, Italian, Turkish, French ….. Gerry, a bluff no nonsense businessman, is seated with his wife, ready to celebrate her birthday. The couple is soon joined by their elder son Glyn and his wife Stephanie, and younger son Adam with his new girlfriend. Against the backdrop of business problems, it is not long before family and marital conflicts emerge. Glyn and Stephanie play out two years of their lives in the future, while Adam and Maureen play out the previous two months from their first date up to this night – after which life for all of them will change forever. Light Perpetual: Echoes of War at St Chad’s On Sunday 23rd September, Trio Literati will join Simon Lindley and the St Peter’s Singers, in an evocative and moving words and music concert to mark the anniversary of the end of the First World War. In ‘Echoes of War’ the movements of Fauré’s haunting Requiem are interspersed with carefully chosen readings of poetry and prose. They include Owen, Sassoon, McHarrie, Carol Ann Duffy and e.e.cummings, and they form an emotional bridge between each movement of Fauré’s music. Trio Literati is well known in Headingley for its ‘energy, wit and style’. Maggie Mash, Jane Oakshott and Richard Rastall, come from different backgrounds ( the media, theatre and music), and has been performing words and music, in many different guises, since 2003.

Leeds International Piano Competition In 1963, piano teacher and concert pianist Fanny Waterman (now Dame Fanny) founded a piano competition in Leeds which would go on to become one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. Now, with an exciting global vision from new co-artistic directors Paul Lewis and Adam Gatehouse, the Competition has more to offer audiences than ever before. Over the years, the Leeds International Piano Competition has attracted some of the world's finest young pianists and the finalists have included some of the biggest names in classical music, including Murray Perahia, Radu Lupu, and Lars Vogt. This September, 'The Leeds' will once again welcome exciting young musical talent from all over the world. The University of Leeds Great Hall will host the heats and semi-finals from 6th – 11th September, where 24 pianists from 16 countries will compete for a place in the finals at Leeds Town Hall on 14th and 15th September. In an incredible week of music-making, audiences will be able to follow these pianists all the way from performing solo in the heats to being joined by the full-force of the Hallé Orchestra in the finals. World Premières at Northern Ballet Mixed Programme Northern Ballet opens its Autumn season with not one, but three World Premières at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from 12th – 15th September. This year, its ‘Mixed Programme’ is made up of three exciting, short, new pieces by Kenneth Tindall, Morgann Runacre-Temple, and Mlindi Kulashe. ‘The Shape of Sound’ by Kenneth Tindall, who choreographed Northern Ballet’s award winning ‘Casanova’ and was previously Premier Dancer with the Company, is performed to a reimagining of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. This abstract piece is inspired by the seasons and our responses to them. Morgann Runacre-Temple was Choreographer in Residence at Ballet Ireland and recently choreographed the award-winning dance film ‘Curing Albrecht’ with English National Ballet. ‘The Kingdom of Back’ is an intimate and moving portrait of Mozart’s elder sister Nannerl, a musical genius in her own right. ‘Road’ at Leeds Playhouse: An Anti-Austerity Battle Cry’ Leeds Playhouse opens its Autumn season with Jim Cartwright’s seminal play ‘Road’ from Wednesday 5th – Saturday 29th September.

Set on a forgotten Northern street over one raucous night, it delves into the houses of the street, capturing the various characters and portraying the desperation of people’s lives at this time – the mid 1980s. Cartwright’s powerful and poignant observation of the everyday lives of the working-class residents explores a time of intense poverty and austerity measures. Over thirty years later it still resonates loudly. But, it also holds a great deal of humour and even hope.

Arts&Culture Opera North Presents High Drama and Comedy Opera North last staged a new production of Tosca sixteen years ago, but this Autumn director Edward Dick returns to the Company to work his magic on one of Puccini’s most popular operas.

Tosca may have been written in 1900 but it still feels strikingly relevant in today’s world with its exploration of political posturing and power, love and lust, freedom and repression. Mexican tenor Rafael Rojas who sang Calaf in Turandot (and treated shoppers in Trinity Leeds to an amazing pop-up performance of ‘Nessun Dorma’), will be taking on the role of the charismatic artist Mario Cavaradossi, while Belfast-born soprano Giselle Allen plays Floria Tosca, Rome’s star singer and his jealous lover. Unfortunately for the couple, Tosca has also attracted the attention of Scarpia, the corrupt Chief of Police, who will stop at nothing to get his way. Tosca is the very essence of opera with its collision of politics, sex, art, religion and death, all underpinned by Puccini’s high-octane score.

If you’d prefer a comedy, there will also be a chance to see The Merry Widow, a lighthearted operetta which follows beautiful, wealthy widow Hanna Glawari as she takes a trip to Paris much to the delight of all the French bachelors. Unfortunately, if she marries a foreigner, the little-known state of Pontevedro will lose her millions and go bankrupt. It falls to the lot of the country’s ambassador, Baron Zeta, to do everything he can to ensure Hanna marries a suitable – Pontevedrian – man. Glitzy and glamorous, this is a chance to enjoy a fresh English version of this much loved 20th-century operetta.

The Eagerly Awaited ‘Jersey Boys’ Swings in to Leeds Grand

The creative team keeps a really tight rein on the production, which probably accounts for the show’s enduring

The Tony, Olivier and Grammy Award-winning musical ‘Jersey Boys’ swings into Leeds Grand Theatre from 20th November – 1st December. This is the remarkable story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, their rise to stardom from the wrong side of the tracks and their inevitable demise. They became one of the most successful bands in pop history, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and sold 175 million records worldwide, all before they turned 30. This is no tribute show – it is written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice with the approval of the three remaining members of the group. Certainly, it is Bob Gaudio’s music (one of the original founders of the Four Seasons), that is the nucleus of the show, but their story is also captivating. Lewis Griffiths, who plays Nick Massi, was with the show in Newcastle when we spoke to him. Many of you will remember him as Johnny in ‘Dirty Dancing’ at Leeds Grand not long ago. This is his second tour with Jersey Boys and he has lost none of his enthusiasm for the show.

“What endures is the music”, said Lewis. “It is a play that tells the story of the Four Seasons from four different perspectives throughout the show, with music woven through it. The creative team keeps a really tight rein on the production, which probably accounts for the show’s enduring success. The music is timeless and there is genuinely something for everyone. Younger audiences not familiar with the music often assume that it’s a fictional story and are pleasantly surprised to find that it is all true. It’s just a good story.” Worldwide, 25 million people have seen the show. Bob Gaudio has seen it around 200 times himself – he likes to keep an eye on how it’s going! The UK Tour production is staged by the entire original Broadway creative team, led by director Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo, with scenic design by

University of Leeds Explores the Legacies of WWI One hundred years after the Armistice on 11th November 1918, a new exhibition ‘Goodbye to all that? Legacies of the First World War’ at the University’s Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery, explores the legacies of the First World War.

Co-curated by PhD students Eilis Boyle and Alexander Shaw and Professor Alison Fell, the exhibition tells the stories of people in Yorkshire, and beyond, getting used to life after the ‘War to End All Wars’. With themes of grief, memory, disability, women’s rights and politics, the stories still resonate today. “Many of the consequences of the First World War – the waves of refugees, political fallout that, for good or ill, redrew the world map, changed understandings of women’s rights and citizenship, developments

in healthcare, creation of veterans’ associations, erection of thousands of memorials – continue to shape our world today”, said Professor Alison Fell. “This exhibition tells new stories about the myriad ways the war irrevocably changed people’s lives, and we hope the poignant objects and images that we have chosen will give visitors food for thought.”

The Leeds Library Celebrates its 250th Anniversary The Leeds Library, based on Commercial Street, is celebrating its 250th Anniversary this year with an exciting programme of cultural events, projects and partnerships. It has already hosted readings and talks by great writers, like Tony Harrison and Simon Armitage. With its WildLines Festival, in partnership with Leeds Big Bookend, it also brought leading thinkers and writers on natural history to the city. It has worked with Headingley Lit Fest, Chapel FM and Ilkley’s Words in the City and has established a new spoken word night, Chelping, curated by Matt Abbott, which is bringing vibrant performers to Leeds. There have been exhibitions highlighting gems from its own collections, and theatrical events and performances with partners like Opera North.

September will also see the launch of the ‘Through the Pages’ exhibition, which will run from 14th September to 23rd November (Mon – Fri, 1 – 3pm; Sat, 11am – 1pm; Sun, 11am - 3pm). It will take visitors on a journey around the Library with displays presenting the story of how the Library was founded and has thrived over 250 years. "Visitors to the exhibition will get to know our collections, artefacts and oddities as well as our resident ghost, a former Librarian, who walks the balconies of the Library at night”, said Carl Hutton, CEO of the Library. “You will read members’ stories, learn about the building itself, the Library’s current work and plans for the future. Parts of the library will be open to the public for the first time. The exhibition is free, and we hope that as many people as possible will visit us during this exciting time." During October and November, the Library will be staging a range of immersive theatrical experiences, including a unique presentation of Frankenstein (9th - 11th Oct); an interactive, immersive theatrical puzzle ‘The Hidden’ (31st Oct- 3rd Nov); and a ghostly poetic walk with award winning poet Mark Pajak (24th - 27th Oct).

The celebrations continue this Autumn. A commemorative book, Through the Pages, will be launched in early September to coincide with an international academic conference (20th - 22nd Sept); and a celebration dinner will be held at The Queens Hotel on Friday 21st September with the Bard of Barnsley, Ian McMillan, as guest speaker.

During the first two weeks of November, the Library will be hosting theatrical performances in partnership with The Leeds Playhouse and Red Ladder Theatre, as well as its spoken word nights, Chelping (12th Sept, 10th Oct, 28th Nov), and Literary Salons (10th Oct, 14th Dec) curated and co-produced by Renaissance One. Following its ongoing commitment to promoting Fairtrade principles, Horsforth has successfully renewed its Fairtrade town status for two years, Horsforth was first awarded Fairtrade status in 2015 in recognition of the achievement of five qualifying goals – including a wide availability of Fairtrade products in shops and catering outlets, and high levels of support from residents, businesses, the council, faith groups and schools. “We are delighted that Horsforth continues to be a Fairtrade town”, said Rev Matt Wright of Lister Hill Baptist Church, Chair of Fairtrade Horsforth. “It’s great that more residents are becoming aware of what Fairtrade means and the difference it makes in many lives.”

The Fairtrade Mark certifies that products meet economic, social and environmental standards. It is the most widely recognised ethical mark worldwide and helps to ensure that small-scale farmers earn stable incomes and have long-term contracts with companies. In addition, they can earn the Fairtrade Premium, which can be invested in projects to benefit their business or community. Fairtrade Horsforth is always looking for more members. The Life and Death of Robert Devereux An evening of Tudor song and drama with Jenny Hill and Simon Nisbett, known as ‘Merry Melancholy’, will take place at The Leeds Library, 18 Commercial Street, on Thursday 27th September at 7.30pm. It is 1624. Richard and Susannah, a lutenist and singer, are preparing a concert to mark the publication of a book – Gervase Markam’s Honour in his Perfection – dedicated to Robert Devereux, Second Earl of Essex. Although he was executed for treason more than two decades previously, during the reign of Elizabeth I, he still has a huge following. The play tells of his eventful years at court, his stormy relationship with the Queen and his early death. The character of Richard is based on Richard Mynshall, whose handwritten lute book has survived to the present day. The playwright, Jenny Hill, is a poet and singer who has founded three choirs, specialising in early music. Simon Nisbett taught guitar in

schools for many years before making the lute his instrument of choice ten years ago. The music for the play is provided by Thomas Campion, John Dowland, Daniel Bacheler and Philip Rosseter. New Public Space Protection Orders Following extensive consultation, a new Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in relation to dog control and smoking in children’s play areas is now in place. A new city-wide requirement is that anyone in charge of a dog must carry an appropriate means of picking up after their dog. This is completely new. For a three-month period (started 1st July) the focus will be on educating owners and an informal warning will be given. There will be better clarification

for professional dog walkers who can walk six dogs only when alone and not walking alongside other dogs and their owners. The same three-month period of education and informal warnings will apply. Other new areas include where dogs are prohibited and required to be on a lead. This includes any multi-use games areas (MUGA). Additionally, dogs must be kept on leads around Golden Acre Park, Roundhay Park and Temple Newsam golf courses, Middleton bike hub, the ornamental gardens at Lotherton Hall and the Hollies. A smoking ban was introduced across all children’s play areas in autumn 2015. The new PSPO means that Fixed Penalty Notices can now be issued or people prosecuted for smoking in a children’s play area. The purpose is to change

people’s behaviour not to increase the number of penalty notices. Adequate signage will be in place. Fixed Penalty Notices have been increased to £100 (£80 if paid within ten days). The fine for littering also carries a £100 penalty (£80 for early repayment). Site specific locations within Adel & Wharfedale Ward where the requirements for dogs to be on leads will be in force are: Golden Acre Park – the Demonstration Gardens, the Patio area, area around the lake. Singers Sought for Exciting New Season Horsforth Choral Society is looking for singers to take part in a new season of astronomy-themed music. Rehearsals begin on Monday 3rd September for a concert on 16th November which features work by Orlando Gibbons and Randall Thompson and excerpts from Hadyn’s Creation. It also includes work by Esenvalds, Rusby, and Stroope.

One fed up Adel resident wrote to us recently about litter…. “We live in a beautiful part of the world but why do some people still selfishly chuck their litter on to grass verges and roadsides rather than taking it home or waiting until they find a bin. Our roads and green spaces are littered with plastic bottles, drink cans, cigarette packets, fast food containers, sweet wrappers and empty crisp packets. It costs the country millions of pounds to clear up litter, money, it is argued, that can be spent on more essential public services. Litter also presents a threat to our wildlife as small animals crawl into discarded bottles and cans and find they cannot escape.

Litter attracts litter, so let’s aim for all our roads and green spaces to be clean and green. The challenge is for everyone to take responsibility for where they live, work and play. Please dispose of your litter responsibly, ideally recycling wherever possible. Think about investing in a pair of litter pickers so that you can easily pick up any litter that you see. Don’t just ignore it. Clearing up a grot spot is very rewarding, but make sure you keep yourself safe whilst doing so. You can leave filled litter bags by roadside bins for collection.'

The Bittern is a shy and secretive member of the heron family that had almost died out in the UK before the RSPB began to restore its main habitat – dense reedbeds. Its cryptic, streaky golden-brown and black plumage provides excellent camouflage against the reed stems, and its long dagger-like bill is designed for hunting all kinds of small creatures, including fish, frogs and even small birds. It has long toes which it uses to grasp the reed stems as it moves around, and a black crown and ‘moustache’. Male Bitterns defend their territory and attract mates using a distinctive low-pitched ‘booming’ call, which sounds a bit like the noise of someone blowing across the top of a glass bottle. This call can be heard from January to April, especially at dawn and dusk. The nest is a shallow platform of reed stems within the reedbed, which the female adds to if the water level rises, to keep it above water. The male plays no part in nest building or raising young.

Due to the drying out of their habitat, Bittern numbers declined to a low of 11 booming males in 1997. The RSPB conducted a research programme into the causes of this decline and how Bitterns could be helped, which resulted in restored reedbeds, and a total of over 160 booming males in 2016. Numbers increase in Winter, when European birds arrive to take advantage of the milder UK weather. Leeds RSPB Group

Heritage Open Days at York Gate Garden On Friday 7th September (12.30 – 4.30pm) and Saturday 8th September (2 – 5pm) York Gate Garden on Back Church Lane in Adel (LS16 8DW) will be hosting guided garden tours – and they are completely free as part of Heritage Open Days. MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN DIRECTED BY: OL PARKER STARRING: : CHRISTINE BARANSKI, PIERCE BROSNAN, DOMINIC COOPER, OMID DJALILI, COLIN FIRTH, ANDY GARCÍA, LILY JAMES, AMANDA SEYFRIED, STELLAN SKARSGÅRD, JULIE WALTERS, MERYL STREEP, CHER CERT: PG RUNNING TIME: 114 MINS When West End sensation 'Mamma Mia!' became an international hit movie, it seemed inevitable that Universal would quickly respond with a sequel. A mere decade later, the follow-up debuts straight to cinemas and picks up the story of Donna, her daughter Sophie and her estranged fathers — set against more hits from prolific pop quartet ABBA.

'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again' returns to the Greek island of Kalokairi, exploring the past and present in a fusion of prequel and sequel. A recentlygraduated Donna arrives on the island in 1979, meanwhile in the present, daughter Sophie follows in her late mother’s footsteps by reopening her old hotel. It’s a time of sadness, reflection and hope for the future; it’s also a chance to belt out some upbeat Swedish glam pop at every turn. Much of the film focuses on the younger Donna as she encounters the three men who are destined to become Sophie’s fathers. Lily James admirably fills Meryl Streep’s denim dungarees, seizing ABBA’s numbers with a relentless optimism and playfulness which reflects the relaxed social attitudes of the time. Basing much of the action in the past neatly avoids reiterating the same style of the first movie, offering a comic book version of a bygone era where flares, stack-heeled boots and winged collars reign supreme. It’s a welcome escape to a great period for pop music, and the evocative ABBA score gels perfectly within the era of its own creation. The soundtrack also deviates from expectations. Drawn from lesserexplored regions of ABBA’s extensive discography, this second serving doesn’t simply offer the non-stop anthems as before. Some minorleague gems now spot the drama, offering a less distracting, if unfamiliar accompaniment to the action. When I Kissed the Teacher is a particularly effective set piece, kick-starting the film with a moderately unknown tune that feels wholly fresh yet explicitly ABBA in style. But don’t worry, we’re reacquainted with a boatful of karaoke-friendly hits which receive a welcome replay. Waterloo, Dancing Queen, Super Trooper and Knowing Me Knowing You all get a second airing, with Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Colin Firth returning to provide gutsy Dad-at-a-wedding vocals. Their range doesn’t come close to West End

Despite its underwritten script, the film looks fantastic. Writer-director Ol Parker offers some good oldfashioned Hollywood spectacle to his picture postcard locations, smartly pinning down teal accent colours in almost every shot. Combined with very playful choreography, slick transitions and ambitious aerial photography, the movie’s strong Technicolor aesthetic ensures there’s no shortage of visual pomp and ceremony to complement its buoyant score.

The soundtrack draws from standards, but the untrained sing-along approach is what makes this carefree musical so much fun. Just don’t expect too much action from older Donna. Those hoping to see more of Meryl Streep’s Broadway talents may come away feeling a little short-changed. For reasons barely explored within the story, Streep’s engagement is limited to just a handful of scenes, which leaves the film a touch undernourished. Trade-offs come in the form of the brilliant Omid Djalili, who gives a memorable cameo as a customs officer, whilst an outrageously camp rendition of Fernando from a peroxidepermed Cher defies all description. Christine Baranski and Julie Walters also return as a fine double act, with Walters showcasing her innate ability to draw genuine pathos from even the fluffiest material.

lesser-explored regions of ABBA’s extensive discography

Whilst drawing on the reserve of some lesser known hits, ABBA’s rich and evocative numbers still take the lead in this film. From lilting underscores to big show-stopping set pieces, the band’s campy style perfectly lends itself to the heightened bravura of musical fantasy. This obligatory sequel delivers a welcome second dose of pop nostalgia, occasionally exceeding expectations with skilful production values and robust performances, all without taking itself too seriously. Take a chance - go see.

Howard Assembly Room In anticipation of the tenth anniversary of its opening in the new year, the Howard Assembly Room at Opera North celebrates the brilliance and eclecticism of artists who have performed there over the past decade, with return visits from Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita, Tord Gustavsen, Julia Holter and The Tallis Scholars (19th Dec). The programme also features some notable debuts and rare intimate performances from artists, including Chilly Gonzales and Moses Sumney. There will be virtuoso performances on traditional stringed instruments from Africa, Scandinavia and the Middle East in the coming months. Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora maestro Seckou Keita (24 Nov), return with their latest album ‘Soar’, taking their collaboration to new heights with a suite inspired by the osprey. Slow Moving Clouds (20th Oct) combine Irish and Nordic traditions, layering voice, violin, cello and nyckelharpa. And, through her mastery of the zitherlike qanun, Maya Youssef (27th Sept) summons the sounds of her Syrian homeland, lamenting its present conflict and celebrating its rich cultural heritage.

Since bridging early music and avant-pop with 2015’s dreamlike gem ‘Have You in My Wilderness’, she has recorded a live album, rescored the silent film ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’, and collaborated with Jean Michel-Jarre. Sound&Vision For the past five years the monthly ‘Tower of Song’ has been bringing musicians together to perform new songs to a receptive crowd at the Fox & Newt. Under the guiding hand of Nicky Bray and Carl Flattery, the night has moved from a student showcase to a community hub, with a spin off covers only night, and family friendly events over the Summer. Tower of Song was originally a residential for music students at Leeds Beckett University. After some initial success, the decision was made to create a regular event, allowing students to showcase and eventually take over. The night has a strict ‘no covers’ rule, and all songs must be written on a theme, making them more ambitious. Early examples were ‘jazz and animals’, while recent themes included ‘killer robots’ and ‘the periodic table’. The desire to foster a musical community in Leeds goes further than regular performing musicians. ‘Risk A Verse’ (conceived of by Dan Akers) takes the idea of a theme but demands performers only bring covers. The objective is “to encourage people who would like to sing but are a little bit shy”. There is a house guitarist who

It has been described as ‘feel good’ and ‘anthemic’. This unique set up attracts musicians from across Leeds, with regulars from open mic nights at The Old Kings Arms (Horsforth), The Chemic (Woodhouse), and The Grove (City Centre) testing songs at their respective nights before bringing them to the Fox and Newt. Thanks to projects like Tower of Song, open mic nights in Leeds are becoming increasingly ‘open’, a space for families and beginners rather than just musicians. The best thing about open mic nights in Leeds is the community it brings together, the friendships it forges, and the feel-good vibes it brings. Michelle Sutcliffe: A Pioneer in Needs Women’s Professional Boxing

More Volunteers OPAL (Older People’s Action in the Locality), an LS16 based charity that supports older people, has been going from strength to strength since moving into a renovated pub at 55 Bedford Drive, Cookridge eighteen months ago – now the Welcome In Community Centre.

A wide range of Although she didn’t start boxing training until she was 30, Michelle Sutcliffe already had three years of Thai boxing experience behind her and she went on to win four British titles and be ranked third in the world. It all started with husband Gary convincing her to train for self-defence and fitness. He soon recognised her potential to become a pioneer in women’s professional boxing and encouraged her to make the switch… the rest is history. Michelle obtained her professional licence from the British Boxing Board of Control 1999. Within one year, on 27th February 2000, she had won a world title belt at Leeds Town Hall, becoming the City’s first world boxing champion. She won another world title the following year, becoming the first woman in Britain to win two different world boxing titles.

Retirement from competition allowed Michelle to become an amateur boxing and Thai boxing coach at Tigers Gym in Meanwood. Among the many classes she teaches is one for ‘Ladies Only’, which is attended by a number of Muslim women. At present Tigers Gym boasts an under 18s national ladies champion, and a number of other women also compete. Michelle has always maintained that boxing training should be done for enjoyment, self-esteem and fitness, then the true love of the sport should follow. She also enjoys training the Leeds University boxing club. About four months before Michelle won her world title – she helped a young, upcoming amateur boxer with some sparring training. This young lady was just starting to reach her prime as an amateur boxer. She didn’t realise it at the time, but her pioneering work in boxing would help to inspire Nicola Adams to go on to achieve Olympic Gold.

Take Heart’s 30th Annual Sponsored Walk is a Fun Day Take Heart’s 30th Sponsored Walk will be held, as usual, in Roundhay Park on Sunday 30th September, starting at 10am at the Mansion. This year the charity is turning the event into a Fun Day and inviting younger walkers to take part, in the hope of attracting record numbers. The charity raises funds exclusively for the Yorkshire Heart Centre at Leeds General Infirmary, St James’s hospital and its units within The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Founded in 1988 by a number of heart patients wishing to give something back for the excellent care they had received, it is a small but professional charity run on a completely voluntary basis.

Over the years, Take Heart has raised over £4 million, which has been used to enhance the surroundings for the many thousands who visit the centre each year. Major achievements include the provision of a suite of relatives’ rooms available free of charge when required, a roof garden, and an internal garden. It has also organised free bedside television, telephone calls and internet for patients, and recently provided the Take Heart Cardiac Suite – with a superb waiting room for patients, pre and post-procedures involving heart valve replacement, pacemakers, angiograms and the like. Take Heart has refurbished all the heart wards and waiting areas and made sure that patients have the highest standard

Thackray Medical Museum’s Big LEGO Build is underway. For just £1 visitors can place a brick into the scaled down model of the museum which, when completed, will contain over 150,000 bricks. The project is raising money towards the museum’s £4 million campaign ‘A Healthy Future’, which is due for completion in Spring 2020. With new and updated exhibitions, new visitor experiences and vital repairs to the fabric of the Grade II listed building, the redevelopment will see the museum transformed. “This is an opportunity for people to place a brick into the model and chat to us about the museum’s exciting plans for the future”, said Katie Clark, the museum’s official LEGO master builder. “The museum is housed in what was once the Leeds Union Workhouse and I can’t wait to see it recreated in LEGO.” The museum has already received support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Wellcome Trust and the Thackray Medical Research Trust, but it needs to raise a further £300,000.
