DEAR READERS, Well, Leeds’ reputation as Festival City continues to build with the upcoming return of both the Leeds Indie Food Fest and Leeds International Festival. In addition, the first Leeds Piano Festival arrives in May, presented by the Leeds International Piano Competition at the Howard Assembly Room. Two musicals are sweeping into town – the wonderful ‘Sunshine on Leith’ featuring the music of The Proclaimers; and Sting’s new musical ‘The Last Ship’. The new investment fund ‘Invest in Headingley’ is proving a huge success; there are a number of great fitness challenges in aid of

various charities; The Howard Assembly Room presents another great line-up; and Easter Fun abounds! Images of Leeds Grand Theatre are featured in the current Leeds Town Hall exhibition, which showcases cultural institutions in Leeds. The images celebrate the opulence of the magnificent Grade II* listed building and will be on display in the ‘Staircase Gallery’ until the end of June. Built in 1878 in an intriguing mix of Romanesque and Victorian Gothic styles, Leeds Grand Theatre was a major milestone in Victorian design and was once described as ‘probably the finest of its size in Britain’; its stage being on a par with the leading London Theatres. It also led the way in technical innovation behind the scenes.

Since its ‘transformation’ in 2006, the theatre has hosted the best of the West End and other touring productions, including large musicals, drama from the National Theatre, comedians and music, as well as continuing to provide a home for Opera North and Northern Ballet.

Trinity Students Triumph at NCTJ Awards Two journalism graduates from Leeds Trinity University have been recognised in the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) student awards. Alex Miller and Anna Riley, who both graduated from the MA Journalism course last year, were presented with their awards at a ceremony hosted by national TV journalist Nick Owen at the BBC Academy Birmingham. Alex won the video journalism award after achieving the best overall performance in the two video assessments while studying for his MA Journalism alongside the NCTJ diploma at Leeds Trinity. Anna was awarded the Johnston Press Media Law: Court Reporting award for her performance in the law and court reporting exam, where she gained 97%. Both got top marks in their modules out of all the students taking the exam in the UK.

"This is a huge achievement for Anna and Alex and I'm absolutely delighted for them”, said Catherine O'Connor, Head of the School of Arts and Communication at Leeds Trinity University. “The awards recognise their hard work and are a reflection of the teaching excellence and dedication of their tutors – Nigel Green and Lindsay Eastwood here at Leeds Trinity. Our MA Journalism course is one of only four to be accredited by both the NCTJ and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council, so it's fantastic that our students have the opportunity to gain professional qualifications and recognition alongside their Master's degree." Alex is now working as a journalist at the Halifax Courier and Anna is Senior Business Development Manager in the healthcare technology sector.

The Heart and Soul Ball, in aid of the charities Macmillan Cancer Support and Take Heart, is on Saturday 19th May at The Marriott Hotel in Leeds. Organised by Debbie BurgessGough and Hannah Walasek, this will be a wonderful night of delicious dining, excellent entertainment and dancing. Headingley Investment Fund Hits Over £90,000 in Just Two Weeks! Headingley Development Trust’s new investment fund has got off to an excellent start. Just two weeks from launch over £93,800 had been invested. Open until the end of April, it is hoped that this excellent rate of investment continues and that the £480,000 target is reached. Anyone can invest (minimum £200) in The Headingley Investment Fund, and the fund will pay a 2% rate of interest. All the details are available online and paper forms are available from HEART on Bennett Road. Headingley Development Trust (HDT) launched the fund on 26th February at

a packed meeting at HEART and it has really captured people’s interest. With the success of projects like HEART, Headingley Homes, and Headingley Farmers’ Market, HDT recognised that other important projects could be considered if funding were available – all designed to build on community and make Headingley an even more attractive place to live. This investment would enable HDT to develop new ideas; respond more quickly to opportunities; respond to the need for more affordable, quality rented housing in the area; encourage Headingley to re-invest and recycle its own resources, providing

Life&Style Thinking of The Future: Care Home Fees The subject of care home fees is of great concern to many people. This is understandable, given that many care homes cost over £1,000 per week. This can reduce your estate considerably, leaving your beneficiaries in a weaker financial position than you may have intended. How are care home fees funded? In some cases, the NHS may have a duty to pay for the cost of care. This is known as NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC). Whether or not someone is eligible for CHC will depend upon their care needs. This is not means tested so the individual’s financial position is not of relevance. If an individual is not eligible for CHC, they may still be eligible for NHS Funded Nursing Care. This is paid directly to a nursing home to pay for registered nurses employed by the home. Further, the local authority may have a duty to pay some or all of the costs. This will be based on the individual’s financial position and is subject to a means test. Therefore, if you have assets worth over a certain amount, you may have to pay for your own care home fees. There are ways to protect your assets so that they are not taken into account when care home funding is considered. Should I protect my assets against being used to pay for my care? “My job is to advise my clients on what is best for them”, said Andrew Milburn, Partner and Head of Wills, Probate and Trusts at Levi Solicitors. “And that’s something that people often lose track of – protecting assets against

being used for care isn’t generally in your best interests. The people who tend to benefit, however, are the people who will eventually benefit from your estate after your death. “If you do want to protect your assets against being used to pay for your care, there are some options available. All have their pros and cons and it is important that you fully understand these, so that you can make an informed decision. “Unfortunately, there are unqualified people ‘advising’ about protecting assets against care fees. Of course, these companies are not all bad! However, I do meet people who have taken some quite drastic steps (such as transferring their homes into names of people they haven’t met) without really understanding what they’ve done. My advice to anybody who is considering taking steps to try to protect assets is to first take advice from a qualified solicitor who specialises in this area of law so that you can make a fully informed decision. “If you have already taken some steps towards protecting assets and you are not happy about the advice you were given, we’d be happy to take a look for you. “Here at Levi Solicitors LLP we offer a free, no obligation initial meeting.”

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford John Dyson (1845-1916) Watchmaker and Jeweller Round the corner from the teeming crowds of shoppers in the Trinity Centre, in the quiet lower end of Briggate you will find one of Leeds’ unique historic buildings, a survival from the first golden era of Leeds shopping: the gilded, elaborate Time Ball Buildings, with its two great clocks, one presided over by Father Time complete with scythe and the warning ‘Tempus Fugit’ – Time flies’. For more than 100 years this was the base of the iconic business which John Dyson, ‘practical watchmaker and jeweller’, founded in 1865. Its glittering automated window displays and the high-tech mechanism of its two ‘time balls’ drew the crowds. Dyson’s was a favourite meeting place, and it was an easy step into the rich, gleaming interior where ‘diamond rings from £1 to £100’ were on offer, alongside other treasures. John Dyson got a feel for the luxury end of the market from his father Robert, who had come to Leeds in the 1840s as an apprentice in the fur trade and went on to run a fur warehouse in Briggate, selling sables and sealskin coats, boas and muffs. John was his only surviving son (three siblings died in infancy), born in Aberford but growing up in Leeds around Buslingthorpe and North Street, and later, as Robert’s business thrived, moving out to the newly built Woodbine Terrace in semirural Headingley. John did not follow in the fur trade but trained in his teens as a watchmaker and jeweller. When he was only 20 he set up in business in Mill Hill, and five years later moved to Briggate (no 26), creating a smart new shop and workroom from an ancient building close to the busy junction with Boar Lane, newly widened and upgraded. In 1872 he married his long-term sweetheart, Lucy Anne Hobson from Woodhouse. Her father worked at the Woodhouse chemical works producing sulphuric acid (the ‘Chemic’ pub provides a reminder), while she like her mother and sister did other people’s washing – a tough existence. Marriage brought a new way of life. The family story is that it was Lucy

Anne who encouraged John Dyson in his ambitious plans to expand the business, and it was her later good luck at the gaming tables of Monte Carlo (what a change from the washtub!) that provided the cash for extravagances like Parisian chandeliers for the shop. In 1877 John Dyson took over the adjoining building (no.25). He introduced a novel mechanism for raising and lowering his costly window display each day, and installed a ‘time ball’ outside, linked electrically to Greenwich, which would drop spectacularly each day at 1 pm, a landmark event. So Leeds townspeople could correct their watches to London time – ‘railway time’. The new time-ball was hailed by the papers as unique in the North of England, a symbol of Leeds moving into the modern age. Business boomed. Working class incomes were increasing: even the less well-off could afford a watch, a clock, an engagement ring. Dyson offered instalment plans, and special gifts for loyal customers to mark weddings and christenings. He catered for the top end of the market too, dealing in expensive

jewels, custom-made clocks, artistic bronzes and elaborate table-ware. By 1881 he was employing ten people and had ambitious plans. He took on a third shop (no.24) and in 1887 began major alterations, adding a tall bay window with a dome, a new double-faced projecting clock, illuminated at night and topped by the specially commissioned figure of Father Time, and to crown it all a second, huge three-foot time ball. The 1889 Guide to Leeds included a picture of the shop in all its elaborate splendour. Over the next years the interior was refitted in gleaming mahogany and glass to provide the ultimate shopping experience.

lived in some style with their four children. John Dyson played a major part in community life there, was a prominent Freemason in Leeds, and active in the National Association of Goldsmiths in London, as well as being involved with a number of charities – a busy successful life. He died in 1916, a wealthy man. Two of his sons had joined the business, one specialising in horology the other in gems, and their children were involved in managing the firm even when it was sold in 1970. The shop finally closed in 1990. Its stock, a treasure house of precious objects collected over the century, was sold over two days at Sotheby’s – the end of an era. John Dyson’s Time Ball Buildings survives as part of the Marriott Hotel, occupied now by an Indian restaurant but fortunately listed and protected, a spectacular reminder of the city’s prosperous past.

Poetry into Song: A Four-Day Celebration of Art-Song Leeds Lieder’s four-day festival, ‘Poetry into Song’, runs from 19th – 22nd April at The Venue, Leeds College of Music. Under the artistic directorship of pianist Joseph Middleton, it celebrates art-song, poetry and community. The varied concert programme performed by world-class artists will feature cornerstones of the Lieder repertoire, alongside works written especially for the festival. There will also be an ambitious education programme, and interactive events for children, poets and amateur singers. Headingley Voices Sing Fauré’s Requiem Join Headingley Voices Community Choir and sing Fauré’s Requiem in D Minor, at St. Chad’s Church, Far Headingley on Saturday 23rd June. This is the best known of Fauré’s large works and it consists of seven movements. The focus of the piece is on eternal rest and consolation.

Hosted by Headingley Voices (formerly Lawnswood Community Choir), the event is open to all. You are invited to sign up and sing along with the choir, and enjoy the rehearsal and performance – and you need no previous experience of the work.

Headingley Voices perform regularly and meets at Shire Oak Primary School on Wood Lane on Thursdays (7.40-9.30pm) during term time. A friendly and informal choir, they sing a range of music including folk, pop, jazz and world music, under the guidance of the choir leader, Tricia Kyte. The Come and Sing day will be led by Imelda Shirley, a skilled teacher and choral conductor with experience of leading choral workshops across the country. Imelda led the choir’s previous, very successful, Come and Sing of the Armed Man at St. Chad’s in 2015. If you enjoy singing join the choir for this day, places are still available but, going fast. The first Leeds Piano Festival, presented by the Leeds International Piano Competition, comes to the Howard Assembly Room this May. Twinned with London’s Wigmore Hall to host three recitals by past finalists of the Competition, the Howard Assembly Room will present Alessio Bax, Sunwook Kim and Lars Vogt who have all gone on to forge international careers. Here they'll perform their favourite repertoire centred around seminal works by composers of the 19thCentury. There’ll also be a special performance by emerging talent from the Lang Lang International Music Foundation scholarship programme, and a Masterclass with Alessio Bax. Alessio Bax (Monday 14th May, 7.15pm) Bax has appeared as soloist with more than 100 orchestras, including the London and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras. His performance will include Bach’s arrangement of Marcello’s Oboe Concerto, Rachmaninov’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli and Liszt’s Dante Sonata.

Red Ladder’s ‘Damned United’ Returns to The Playhouse

The Damned United returns to Leeds following the sell-out success of its world premiere and The Playhouse has chosen this popular Leeds story for its fourth community tour. “When we talked about The Damned United coming back to Leeds I knew we should take it out as our community tour”, said James Brining, Artistic director at West Yorkshire Playhouse. “It's important to us that the work we make reflects and engages with our city and The Damned United is a story that really means something to people in Leeds. Clough is both a villain and hero, and to this day, the mention of his name still stirs up powerful feelings. It’s a story wrapped up in people’s experiences of growing up in the city so to bring this popular title to audiences in our theatre - and then out on tour – is a fantastic thing.”

Red Ladder’s stage adaptation of David Peace’s best-seller ‘The Damned United’ can be seen at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 27th March – 7th April, and will then then tour to community venues across the city from 10th – 21st April. “We’re thrilled to be bringing back The Damned United and then taking it into the heart of communities as Red Ladder Local and West Yorkshire Playhouse”, said Rod Dixon, Red Ladder ‘s artistic director. “As a story, it has it all – passion, power struggles, tragedy and a classic anti-hero in Clough - and Anders Lustgarten’s play brilliantly captures the grit and poetry of David Peace’s writing.”

Published in 1950, and having been approved by the censor without any editing, ‘Accolade’ proved to be one of the most moving and provocative plays of the decade. It has a very contemporary feel as it considers the position of the protagonist Will Trenting, carefully peeling back the layers of his story and revealing a Jekyll and Hyde existence behind the respectable facade of a celebrated writer and family man. Bored by the charade and insincerity of 'the establishment' and the society in which he lives, he occasionally escapes to a pub called 'The Blue Lion' in Rotherhithe, where he throws wild all-night parties for the locals. ‘Anthony McCall: Solid Light Works’ includes the UK premiere of three large-scale ‘solid light’ sculptures that immerse the visitor, allowing them to become active participants in the work. Engulfed in dark and haze filled rooms, these three-dimensional forms will really captivate visitors you.

Many of the works on paper connect directly to the three solid light installations in the exhibition. Working with the carefully proportioned and gently angled spaces of the gallery in mind, McCall felt that he could ‘do business’ with the space. These new sculptural forms are minimal, using only projected light and a thin mist, but at their expanded scale they take on almost architectural qualities and will re-envision how we view sculpture.

In his first major exhibition in the UK in over a decade, McCall explores how his practice has developed since the early 1970s. With a focus on drawing, works on paper and his creative process, the show displays how a sketch in an A6 notebook can transcend into a fullscale light work. Leeds International Festival is back for its second year with a fortnight of events to excite, entertain and inspire from 28th April – 12th May. The festival is a celebration of new ideas, local creativity and international culture and last year it brought over 17,000 people into the city.

Sunshine on Leith Shines its Rays on Leeds!

Originally a stage musical before being transformed into a feature film starring Jane Horrocks and Peter Mullan in 2013, ‘Sunshine on Leith’ is about to bound on to the West Yorkshire Playhouse stage and take people on a foot-stomping adventure from Friday 20th April – Saturday 19th May, ahead of a major UK tour.

“Sunshine on Leith is such an entertaining and emotionally charged musical”, said James. “Now, back in my hometown of Leeds, those overarching themes of home and where you put down your roots are as important as ever.”

Created by The Playhouse’s own artistic director, James Brining, with writer Stephen Greenhorn, over ten years ago in Dundee, the show was a smash hit in Scotland, the film captured many more fans, and it promises to be a huge hit in Leeds too.

Set to the songs of The Proclaimers, including their big hits ‘I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)’, ‘Letter from America’, and ‘Sunshine on Leith’, you are likely to leave the theatre feeling definitely uplifted.

In the story, servicemen Davy and Ally return from war overseas to be confronted with civilian life that is filled with relationships and commitments. It’s a love story but it’s also about building bridges and what you think of as home. Modern Britain is more fluid – what should they affiliate with? What should they prioritise? As they embark on intertwining journeys in love, they start to question what home means to them as they rediscover their sense of identity.

“The Proclaimers are brilliant song writers”, said James. “Their songs lend themselves so well to theatre. They are very human – about being in and out of love, death, children leaving home, infidelity. They are so down to earth and immediate, about ordinary people – so all different ages can immediately engage with them.

Arts&Culture The Last Ship Sting’s Beautiful Musical Comes to Leeds Grand Leeds is in for a treat when Sting’s musical ‘The Last Ship’ sails into town between Monday 30th April – Saturday 5th May. At the recent launch of the show’s tour at the City Varieties, the show’s producer, Karl Sydow, almost ran out of superlatives as he expressed his pleasure at working on such a wonderful show with ‘some of the most beautiful music ever written for the stage’. And, as Sting and three of the leading actors – Richard Fleeshman, Charlie Hardwick and Joe McGann – launched into a few of the songs, we were inclined to agree. The story revolves around a sailor named Gideon Fletcher (Richard Fleeshman) who returns home after years at sea. Tensions between past and future flare up in both his family and the town. The local shipyard, which has always sustained the community, is closing and uncertainty reigns as a half-built ship towers over the terraces. With the engine fired and pistons in motion, picket lines are drawn as foreman Jackie White (Joe McGann) and his wife Peggy (Charlie Hardwick) fight to hold their community together in the face of the gathering storm. The show was inspired by Sting’s own experience of growing up in Wallsend. He well remembers the thousands of men heading down to the Swan Hunter shipyard past his front door every morning and then back again every evening. His father and grandfather had worked there and he felt the same fate awaited him. But he wanted to play music and write songs. He wanted to be an international sensation, to be showered with

awards and honorary degrees – and, as he said, “I dreamt it so hard that it happened!”

Of course, on his way to success he studied in Leeds and for a while worked seven days a week in a frozen pea factory in Hunslet as he saved up for a guitar!

A Celebration of Independent Food and Drink Leeds Indie Food returns for its fourth year from 10th – 28th May and this year £1 from every Festival Passport sold will be donated to Action Against Hunger, a charity that works with restaurants across the UK to raise funds to help end child malnutrition worldwide. Funded by Leeds Business Improvement District (LeedsBID) and Leeds City Council, the festival is an important showcase of Leeds’ ever-growing community of independent businesses. Greenspace Residents in Adel have expressed anger at the Council’s draft Site Allocation Plan which proposes to take land out of Green Belt to allow the development of 68 homes south of Dunstarn Lane, and to bring the proposal forward to Phase 1, raising the likelihood of an immediate approach by developers. It provides no robust rationale for removing the site from Green Belt, nor does it justify why it should be treated differently from other similar sites, which will be retained as Green Belt. The Council has described the land as scoring negatively in relation to landscape. These are open fields that provide unfettered views across the Meanwood Valley to Emley Moor. It is not clear what criteria has been applied and how this compares with other sites.

The Leeds Skyrack Lions Club recently provided a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for use in cases of life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, which could lead to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in both adults and children. This 24/7 public access AED is located outside the Nat West Bank, 63 Otley Rd, LS6 3WA, at the junction with North Lane. It is highly visible in a bright yellow case and the access code can be secured by calling 999. Delayed treatment of cardiac conditions can lead to irreversible brain damage and death. For every minute that a person in cardiac arrest goes without being successfully treated (by defibrillation), the chance of survival decreases by seven per cent per minute in the first three minutes, and by 10 per cent per minute as time advances.

AEDs can be used by anyone as instructions are provided to the user while automatically analysing the patient's condition. The introduction of AEDs in public areas is being heavily promoted by West Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Leeds Skyrack Lions raised the money for this community project and will provide the ongoing recommended maintenance. This AED has been supported by the Enterprise Holdings Foundation and is dedicated to the memory of Lions Granville Barker and Dr Stuart Thorburn who together served the community as Lions volunteers for over 90 years. The Leeds Skyrack Lions Club has 12 members and meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at the New Headingley Club. Over 100 residents expressed their frustration at a recent meeting of Adel Neighbourhood Forum and there was no support for the Council’s view that this site should be removed from Green Belt. The Council encourages local communities to respond to its proposals. However, feedback emphasises that the Council’s approach makes this difficult. The criteria being used are not transparent, and it is difficult to engage with the process. Also, the Council has not explained the reasoning behind its proposal, making it difficult to comment, and rendering the consultation process flawed. New Fundraising Manager Urges People to Support BHF Research Stephanie Jones, British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) new fundraising manager for Leeds and Wetherby, is looking for volunteers to join the fight against heart disease by joining one of their local fundraising groups. She will also be managing community partnerships in Leeds and is looking for businesses to support BHF’s important research. There is a variety of exciting fundraising ideas to suit all levels of support. Around 79,000 people across Leeds are fighting a daily battle with heart and circulatory disease and these devastating conditions claim the lives of more than 1,816 people in Leeds alone every year. “By supporting the BHF, through your place of work, volunteering, or holding your own fundraising event, you will be helping us to fund the research that’s so desperately needed to bring us closer to

Councillors Neil Walshaw, Al Garthwaite and I have been working on a number of projects to improve our green and public spaces across Headingley and Hyde Park. The most challenging part of this has been raising the money. The lion's share of the funding is coming from Section 106 money – private money paid by developers to improve an area. We've gathered small pots of this money for a number of projects. Woodhouse Moor – Here we are going to completely renovate the play area, lay new surfaces on all paths, and do something innovative with the old band stand area. Cinder Moor – The flat piece of land across the road from Woodhouse Moor – here we will put down a football pitch and running track. We're currently working out what sort of surface would work best. Sparrow Park – This small park at the top of the Cardigan Triangle will be made into a nice stop off area with a Little Free Library and we'll make sure there's a good children's section. Royal Park Gardens – Years of discussion have led us to put in outdoor sports facilities, a multiuse games area, gym equipment, inclusive play area for children with disabilities, performance space and community garden, on which we're working with Hyde Park Source.

St Michael's Square – This idea is in its infancy. Using the area around the War Memorial, which we renovated last year, we would like to develop a small community square. This would see the loss of around two parking spaces. We're not sure what would go in the middle yet - perhaps a plinth for art? We'd love your thoughts. Wood Lane – We have two potential locations on Wood Lane for a children's play area – it's about time we have a children's play area in central Headingley! We'll update everyone when a location has been finalised. Headingley Hill – the green space behind St Columbus church where you might have seen horses grazing. We have successfully fought against development here, but the area is privately owned by seven different owners. While we don't have the answers for this yet, rest assured we're working hard on options! These are just snapshots of our plans and each is in a different stage of development. Grass Cutting Season The Council is responsible for maintaining over nine million square metres of grass verges, hedges, shrubs and rose beds, and grass cutting is generally carried out between March and October. Grass on privately owned or non-Council properties is not cut. To report Council owned trees/ vegetation growing from private land onto a highway, road or footpath, visit www.leeds.gov.uk/residents/ environmental-heatlh/trees-andvegetation I often get complaints about the clippings that have been left after the grass has

been cut. Contractors are instructed to leave the clippings distributed evenly over the verge as they will compost back down into the soil. Continental Landscapes Ltd are the contractors for Leeds. CommunityNews Seeking Outstanding Dancers with Learning Disabilities or Autism The hunt is on for ten talented dancers with a learning disability, autism, or both, to form a unique new dance company. TIN Arts, a leading inclusive dance organisation, in partnership with Yorkshire Dance, recently launched a two-year programme called the Talent Hub, which is also supported by Inclusion North, an organisation dedicated to inclusion for everyone with a learning disability.

The Talent Hub will accepting applications from dancers in Yorkshire and the North East who’d like to ‘Join George’. George Williams, the first dancer with a severe learning disability to perform with the National Youth Dance Company, has worked with TIN Arts for several years. Dancers are invited to fill out an application form and submit a video of themselves dancing to yorkshiredance. com/talent-hub/. Successful applicants will be invited to take part in one of two

dance workshops in May, after which a final selection day will take place in June to pick the final ten members of the Talent Hub. Applications close on Friday 27th April. Over the two years, they will work with leading choreographers to create new dance work which will be toured nationwide in 2020. They will also receive individualised support where they live, alongside intensive periods of training together as a company.

Caring For Life Receives £11k Grant from Morrisons The Morrisons Foundation recently donated £11,000 to the charity Caring For Life in Cookridge, which has supported more than 5,000 vulnerable and homeless people over the last 30 years. “The Morrisons Foundation supports charities that make a positive difference in communities and Caring For Life does just that”, said Sarah Marston from Morrisons in Horsforth who presented the cheque. In addition to its housing support work, long-term supported living homes and therapeutic activity projects at Crag House Farm, the charity runs a restaurant, farm shop, cafe, garden nurseries, and also sensory gardens that are maintained by volunteers and vulnerable adults.

The donation from the Morrisons Foundation will be used to create a new outdoor play area at the site, which is visited by more than 60,000 people every year. “This grant will enable us to install high quality play equipment”, said Zoe Smith, Caring for Life. “It will also benefit children from vulnerable families supported by Caring For Life’s Being There housing support Team; families that rarely have the opportunity to leave inner city areas and spend quality time in beautiful countryside.” The Morrisons Foundation, set up in 2015, awards grants for charity projects which help to improve people's lives. Home Garden The golden plover is a medium sized wading bird that is both a Winter visitor and a Summer breeder in the UK. It is perhaps one of the most attractive of this group of birds. Even in Winter its plumage is an intricate mosaic of yellow and brown, with a buff-coloured breast and a white belly. Winter flocks, often mixed with lapwings, can appear to glint gold in the sunlight as they twist and turn in flight. The breeding plumage bird is magnificent, the gold on its back even brighter, and the face and belly a striking black, separated by an S-shaped white line. Golden plovers breed on heather moorland, blanket bogs and limestone grassland, such as the habitats found on the North Yorks Moors. They nest on the ground and both male and female birds incubate the young. In Winter it is possible to see flocks of golden plover all over England (RSPB Old Moor reserve near Doncaster being a good example), but they only breed in northern England and Scotland.

There are over 22,000 pairs breeding in the UK, and in Winter there may be more than 300,000 individuals in the UK. There has recently been a decline in breeding pairs, possibly due to the planting of upland forests and the draining of moorland and peatlands. Leeds RSPB Group

Garden Round Up With Tracy Foster

This month is one of the most interesting in the gardening calendar. Whilst warm spells encourage growth that keeps gardeners busy cutting grass, sowing seeds and weeding their plots, frost or snow could also happen at any time so the horticultural fleece has to be kept on stand-by and seedlings must not be put out too soon.

It is one of the busiest months too and the list below has my top ten jobs for April.

1. As temperatures rise, lawns may need a trim. It’s best not to cut them too short for the first few cuts of the season. They can also be raked to remove any moss that has gathered over winter and you can give them a spring feed if you like.

You can use beer traps to lure them away from your plants, or if using slug pellets, remember you only need to put down one per square metre. The smell of the pellets actually attracts slugs so sprinkling too many could make matters worse. 6. Tie any new shoots on your climbing roses to their supports whilst they are still supple enough to bend. 7. Trim Penstemons back to the new shoots emerging from the base. 8. Add a 5cm layer of well rotted manure or compost to your beds, or lightly fork in some chicken manure pellets or fish, blood and bone fertiliser. 9. ANNIHILATION DIRECTED BY: ALEX GARLAND STARRING: NATALIE PORTMAN, JENNIFER JASON LEIGH, OSCAR ISSAC, TESSA THOMPSON, GINA RODRIGUEZ CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 115 MINS Having enjoyed a cinema release Stateside, ‘Annihilation’ arrives in the UK bypassing the big screen and going direct to streaming on Netflix. Whether this will result in the film finding a wider audience or being criminally overlooked remains to be seen. One hopes for the former as writer/director Alex Garland has delivered on the promise of his filmmaking debut, the impressive ‘Ex Machina’, and served up another piece of stylishly executed, considered, thoughtful science fiction. Adapted from a trilogy of novels by Jeff VanderMeer, the film concerns a phenomenon referred to as ‘the shimmer’ caused by the impact of a comet which has resulted in some kind of extraterrestrial terraforming; creating a new ecosystem and altering plant and animal life at a cellular level.

The military and science community has mounted exploratory expeditions into the shimmer from which no one has returned. Natalie Portman plays Lena, a biologist and former soldier whose husband, Kane, (Oscar Isaac) embarked on a secret military mission a year ago and is missing, presumed dead. When Kane suddenly shows up at their home with no memory of where he’s been or what’s happened to him, he falls ill and is taken to a research facility on the edge of the territory affected by the comet. It transpires he has been inside the shimmer and returned a profoundly changed man.

A film whose world is both beautiful and terrifying where nothing is quite what it seems While Kane clings to life, Lena joins an all-female team, led by psychologist Dr Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), to venture into the shimmer and try to reach its epicenter to discover what’s happening and find answers which Lena hopes may save her husband’s life. Having set up an intriguing and mysterious premise the film plunges headlong into the unknown as soon as the team enters the shimmer. Much like the characters themselves the audience quickly realises that in this environment, where things don’t adhere to the rules of nature as we know them, one’s eyes and ears can’t be entirely trusted. Almost immediately, the team can’t tell how long they’ve been there, with no recollection of days passing. Time and memory seem distorted. They notice that all the flora and fauna are undergoing constant mutation and similar changes may be happening to them.

With its lush jungle-like setting and characters in military fatigues spooked by an increasingly hostile environment, ‘Annihilation’ occasionally resembles a gender-flipped ‘Predator’ but it has more in common with sci-fi classics such as ‘Solaris’ and ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’.

This is bold, bewildering mindbender of a movie. Sustaining dramatic tension with a disorienting and unsettling atmosphere of hallucinatory weirdness while juggling big questions about the natural sciences, life and death, memory, loss and also managing to throw in some shocks and monster-movie thrills. It’s a film whose world is both beautiful and terrifying where nothing is quite what it seems. Like ‘Arrival’, another refreshingly intelligent sci-fi offering of recent years, ‘Annihilation’ is a contemplative piece unafraid of wearing

That the film has been deemed undeserving of a cinema presentation in this country seems to be selling it considerably short. A big screen with surround sound would be the preferred way to experience its striking visual effects and immersive sound design. However, as I say, the ease of access afforded by Netflix may be to its benefit and it may yet become the much-appreciated cult favorite it seems destined to be. Gripping, thought-provoking and beguilingly trippy, it’s certainly worth your time.

The Howard Assembly Room The Howard Assembly Room at Opera North has another interesting programme lined up for Spring – this time bringing new takes on traditional music from Africa and Mongolia, and music from country and folk traditions on either side of the Atlantic.

from generation to generation, combine with those keenly lamenting the threats climate change and modernity pose to their habitat and culture. Two American acts, from the myth-rich Appalachian and Catskill Mountains, offer very different approaches. Steeped in the musicianship and harmony singing of rural Virginia and Kentucky, Anna & Elizabeth (Thursday 10th May) find new ways to tell old stories of love, loss and intrigue, accompanied by ‘crankies’ — traditional hand-cranked storytelling panoramas unfurled alongside a song. Simone Felice, who set out on his musical career with alt-country favourites The Felice Brothers, reveals his own gifts for lyrical, literary Americana as a solo singer-songwriter on Wednesday 16th May, when he brings his latest material, songs from his back catalogue and one or two timeless folk ballads to Leeds.

The first all-female supergroup from West Africa, Les Amazones d’Afrique make their Leeds debut on Friday 25th May. The collective brings together some of the most acclaimed voices from generations of West African music: Mamani Keita, Rokia Koné, Mariam Koné, and Awa Sangho. They are the sound of the diaspora of African music, mixing wild guitars, distorted thumb piano, dreamy, jazzy chords and soulful griotte vocals over the rhythms of Afrobeat, funk and reggae.

Lankum first visited the Howard Assembly Room as Lynched in 2016, presenting an electrifying set of Dublin street songs, classic ballads, traditional dance tunes and their own original material, all delivered with a rawness and urgency informed by punk. Wheels 4 Fun Are Gearing Up for Summer!

Wheels 4 Fun disability cycling group kept busy through the Winter, meeting at Meanwood Valley Urban farm on Saturdays and sometimes riding up to the United Reformed church hall on Stainbeck Road for tea and cake! The group is now gearing up for the Summer season with new grant funded tricycles to add to their existing fleet of tandems, tricycles, bikes, and possibly a hand cycle soon. A red recumbent tricycle was funded by Leeds Inner North East Community Committee. The group welcomes adults with physical problems that make it difficult for them to ride a standard bike and has physiotherapists and cycle instructors on hand to give advice and guidance. Bud’s Run for Parkinson’s UK Gavin and Becky Booth from Roundhay are looking for willing walkers to tackle the Bud’s Run Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in aid of Parkinson's UK on Saturday 19th May. The event will be fully managed and supported by outdoor education specialists Carnegie Great Outdoors, based at Leeds Beckett University, who will provide information, qualified instructors, check points, vehicle support and refreshments.

Each group of ten will have a qualified Mountain Leader to support them. The challenge will start between 6.30 & 7.30am and the average walking time is ten hours. This is a tough challenge covering 24.5 miles and walking preparation and fitness is needed. Organisers anticipate a running group if anyone is interested in upping the ante.

Bud is the father of Becky Baldaro Booth who has just left Leeds Beckett University after 13 years’ service. Gavin Booth, Becky's husband works in Carnegie Great Outdoors at Leeds Beckett.

The event is in association with Bud's Run – an annual 5k fun run that takes place in Birmingham every October. It was set up in honour of the work of GB athletics

Conrad Burdekin, Yorkshire children’s poet, writer and storyteller, recently visited The Froebelian School in Horsforth as part of the school’s Literacy Festival.

Two students from Horsforth are finalists in the 2018 Leeds Sports Awards, which celebrate the achievements of the city’s sports stars, coaches and volunteers. Jo Dobson and Alfie Yates, both pupils at The Grammar School at Leeds, both hold national titles in their sport and are up for Young Achievers awards. Year 13 student Jo, a member of Leeds City Weightlifting, is a finalist in the Young Sportswoman category. Jo won the U20 title in the women’s 63kg class at the British Weight Lifting (BWL) Junior Championships despite being the youngest in the category at just 17. Alfie, Year 7, is a finalist in the Young Disability Sportsperson category in recognition of his achievements in the sport of boccia. He is the current holder of the Heathcoat Cup, a national competition for individuals run by Boccia England, the sport’s national governing body (NGB).

Known for books such as ‘Supersonic Gran and other poems’ and ‘The Baked Bean Queen’, Conrad held writing workshops for each class.

“I have never met a more determined and dedicated young man when it comes to playing boccia”, said Mark Dolan, Alfie’s coach at the Knights Academy in Sheffield. “His attention to detail and ability to analyse the game enable him to perform at the highest level, consistently.”
