SALES TEAM Manjit’s Kitchen’s yellow horsebox has been a familiar sight at festivals and other events for a number of years, serving up delicious Indian vegetarian fast food. For the past year she has also had a spot in Leeds Kirkgate market where she has been rapidly gaining fans. In November, as she was about to close up one evening, a homeless woman asked her for a cup of boiling water. Manjit handed her the cup and she promptly threw it in Manjit’s face, shouting at her to go back to where she came from (“That wouldn’t take long”, quipped Manjit. “I’m from Chapeltown!”). Perhaps surprisingly, having suffered minor burns, Manjit reaction was to organise a raffle and raise money for the homeless charity Simon on the Streets. She put the word out amongst all the independent businesses in the Market and word spread like wildfire.

Before she knew it, she had dozens and dozens of donations. And they came from all over Leeds – from theatres, bars, street food operators and all kinds of restaurants. There were tickets for gigs, music lessons and yoga classes; cakes, cheese and chocolates; wine, gin, beer and brewery tours; and even tickets to a T20 cricket match at Headingley Stadium. What’s more, all the tickets and posters were printed free of charge by a Leeds printer.

Life&Style Plans for First White Cloth Hall Revealed Working closely with Leeds City Council, Historic England and Leeds Civic Trust, Leeds-based property company Rushbond recently submitted detailed plans for the historic First White Cloth Hall on Kirkgate. The scheme is designed by Manchesterbased Buttress, a design studio with over twenty-five years experience of working on heritage buildings. “The revival of the First White Cloth Hall (where commerce in Leeds first began) will be pivotal to the on-going revival of Kirkgate — the city’s oldest street”, said Rushbond Director Mark Finch. “Our approach is to understand and learn from its fascinating history, then set a clear direction for this unique building to have a new and exciting future.”

A Grade II* listed building, the First White Cloth Hall is one of the most significant historical buildings in Leeds. Its transformation will include a rebuild of the West Wing and northern elevation, as well as the re-creation of the single, undivided assembly room space. A lightweight structure will enclose the central courtyard to reveal the building’s historic form, and a contemporarilydesigned cube on the southern elevation will provide a new link to the Corn Exchange. “There are lots of great things happening on Kirkgate”, added Mark Finch. “The oldest street in Leeds now has new stories to tell. This is a unique opportunity for a new occupier to help

write the next chapter in the First White Cloth Hall’s story. Although the revived building will lend itself to a variety of uses, the prospect of the Hall being part of the burgeoning fashion scene in Leeds is a particularly enticing one. Arguably, it is where fashion in Leeds began.” The First White Cloth Hall was built in 1711, in response to the news that a covered cloth market was being planned by the merchants of Wakefield, in a bid to tempt trade away from Leeds. The Hall was hugely successful, and was soon replaced by a larger facility — the Second White Cloth Hall on Meadow Lane. “It is a privilege to work on such an historic building”, said Grant Prescott of Buttress. “In re-establishing its historic form, recreating its missing wing, restoring key features, and adding sensitive and respectful new interventions, the building will provide a major presence in a vibrant part of the city. The contemporary addition to the south also provides a strong connection to the Corn Exchange, complementing the restoration of the northern elevation onto Kirkgate itself.” Subject to approval, the aim is for work to start early in 2018.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

Henry Marvell Carr, RA, RP, RBA (1894-1970) War Artist and Portrait Painter Leeds artist Henry Carr lived through two world wars, in WW1 as a young soldier facing the horrors of the Western Front in France, in WW2 as an official war artist commissioned to record life on the home front and on the battlefields. His war paintings were widely exhibited and in the 1950s and 60s helped to establish him as the artist of choice for portraits of the great and the good, though he never lost his sympathetic eye for everyday people and their lives. Born in Hunslet in 1894, he came from everyday roots. His father ‘Matt’ Carr was a clerk, a leading light in the Hunslet rugby and cricket teams – he used to take young Henry to matches, then on to a Music Hall and billiards. The family moved to Roundhay when Henry was six but kept their close Hunslet connections. He went to Leeds Modern School, then at eighteen to Leeds School of Art, bent on being an artist. He was doing well when war was declared in 1914 and life was totally overturned. He volunteered within weeks and was assigned to the Royal Field Artillery in France, promoted after a time to sergeant. His lowest point, never forgotten, was at Passchendaele in 1917, struggling to lead his gun team through thick black mud and blinding, incessant rain. Sent home on leave, he missed the bomb that soon after killed the rest of his team. He survived, recording everything in sketches sent back home to his fiancée Olive Rundle. He and Olive married in Hunslet in 1920. He returned to Leeds School of Art, and in 1921 won a place at the Royal College of Art in London under Sir William Rothenstein, with fellow Leeds students Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth: a brilliant group. He had his first picture accepted at the Royal Academy in 1921 and graduated in 1922, when he and Olive moved to London with their baby daughter. He pursued his artistic

career, painting landscapes, figures and portraits, supplementing his income with teaching. For some fifteen years he taught at the noted Beckenham School of Art, ending as its principal.

He survived, recording everything in sketches sent back home to his fiancée He featured in a prestigious Royal College of Art show alongside Moore and Hepworth in 1924, when he and Hepworth were both finalists for the highly competitive Rome Art scholarships. His work was regularly shown at the Royal Academy, and during the 30s was included in many exhibitions of Yorkshire artists in Leeds, often picked out for their freshness, bold colour and lively treatment. His paintings covered subjects from portraits (mainly women) to landscapes and figure studies, like ‘Bathing the Baby’, a highlight of the 1930 RA exhibition.

Then war again. In 1939 he heard that Kenneth Clark, Director of the National Gallery, was promoting a scheme to recruit artists through the War Artists Advisory Committee – many hundreds of the finest British artists ultimately took part. He sent a picture to Clark, who was impressed. Initially he was commissioned to paint home scenes but in 1943 he was sent as official war artist to North Africa and then Italy. His many paintings from the front included portraits of the commanders (Eisenhower, Alexander, Tedder etc) but also some fine portraits of people doing essential jobs – a telegraphist, an ambulance driver, a ‘Desert Rat’, all named, treated as individuals. He was passionately concerned that the everyday toil of servicemen and women should be recorded. Post-war, with his reputation enhanced by his war portraits, he won many eminent commissions: Princess Margaret in her St John’s Ambulance uniform; the Bishop of Birmingham; the Lord Mayor of York; civic dignitaries

and captains of industry galore. Leeds University commissioned three official portraits. Did Henry Carr tire of these formal portraits, with sometimes demanding sitters or sponsors? Maybe, but he did not forget ordinary working people. He painted two pretty ‘Aero’ girls for Rowntrees, and at Saltaire he agreed to paint a series of pictures of workers at Salt’s Mill through the whole process of production. It took him two years and several visits of close observation. He was an enthusiastic teacher, published a book on how to paint portraits in 1952, and gave two pioneering series of demonstrations on early TV. A convivial man, with a real interest in people (essential for the portraitist he said) he enjoyed all he did. He went on painting and exhibiting (lastly with his son Sebastian) until his death in 1970 at his home in Chelsea. His reputation has faded, but you can see some of his war paintings and formal portraits on the Art UK website and his engaging Saltaire work, recently restored, at the Mill itself.

A Leeds Trinity University Associate Lecturer in Journalism has won a Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) Special Recognition Award for Services to Journalism and Journalism Training. Richard Horsman, who has worked at Leeds Trinity University for 23 years, received the prestigious award in recognition of his work and commitment to training journalism students. Since becoming a lecturer in 1993, Richard has trained more than 400 journalism students at Leeds Trinity.

He worked in the industry alongside training postgraduate students at Leeds Trinity University, before joining the University full time in 2007. He progressed to Course Leader in Broadcast Journalism, and was awarded a Teaching Fellowship in 2012 for his innovative work involving undergraduate students in real broadcasting projects for East Leeds FM and Bradford Community Broadcasting. Richard stepped down from his full time role at Leeds Trinity last year, but continues to work as an Associate Lecturer.

Prepares for La Boheme Leeds Youth Opera has been rehearsing Puccini's wonderful opera ‘La Boheme’ since last September. The story of poverty stricken love has been set in a refugee camp rather than the garrets of Paris, to bring home the reality that some aspects of life have not changed but hope and love can blossom anywhere.

On the centenary of some British women getting the vote, a new exhibition at Abbey House Museum looks at the struggles and progress that women have made in achieving equality and recognition. ‘A Woman’s Place?’ reveals how life has changed for women. “We hope to inspire women and girls to believe that their ambitions and achievements are not limited by their gender”, said Social History Curator Kitty Ross. Brought to life through witty illustrations by Jacky Fleming, the exhibition features stories and objects from 1860 to the present day all linked to strong pioneering women – ranging from suffragette Leonora Cohen’s WSPU badge to Olympic boxer Nicola Adams’s glove, and a gown worn by Councillor Joyce Challenor in the 1960s.

These are 1940s female jazz band leader Ivy Benson; Morley cycling champion Beryl Burton; Leeds suffragette Mary Gawthorpe; and Edith Pechey, one of the first female doctors in the UK, who practised in Leeds during the 1870s-80s. These characterful ceramics will become part of the Leeds Museums’ collection, ensuring that we honour these women for centuries to come. “These trailblazers and visionaries are just a few of the women who helped make changes to society”, said Katch Skinner. The exhibition will run from 20th January – 31st December 2018, alongside a programme of talks, study days and schools workshops. It is free with admission to Abbey House Museum (£4.50 adults, concessions available).

Arts&Culture A Packed Upcoming Season at The Playhouse

The West Yorkshire Playhouse’s (WYP) Spring/Summer 2018 Season showcases new work, thrilling drama and uplifting stories of Leeds and the world. It kicks off with a pioneering festival of theatre and dementia, ‘Every Third Minute’ (9 Feb – 31 March), which puts people living with dementia at the heart of the creative process. At its centre is a new adaptation of the best-selling novel Still Alice starring Sharon Small, which explores the effects of early-onset dementia on identity, family and relationships. Other highlights include: James Graham’s prescient political drama This House (23 Feb – 10 March), set in the engine rooms of Westminster in 1974. Red Ladder Theatre’s The Damned United returns from 27 March – 7 April. It will also visit venues across Leeds as part of WYP’s Community Tour programme.

The hit musical Sunshine on Leith (20 April – 19 May), set to a classic soundtrack by The Proclaimers, opens in the Quarry Theatre before embarking on a major national tour. Paula Hawkins’ best selling novel, The Girl on the Train gets its world premiere at The Playhouse (12 May – 9 June), adapted by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel. And, Searching for the Heart of Leeds (19 – 23 June), is a celebration of the vibrant stories and people of this city. Performed by a community company, it is written by BAFTA-nominated writer Mark Catley, directed by Alexander Ferris, and with movement by Phoenix Dance Theatre. Alan Bennett’s sharp, witty and pertinent Talking Heads will be performed in the Courtyard Theatre in June, and afterwards across the city in people’s homes and community venues. Work in the Barber Studio includes Pauline Mayers’ What If I Told You? (13 – 17 Feb) – carefully balanced theatre and dance that immerses the audience in her world.

Black Men Walking (21 – 24 Feb), written by world record-holding beat boxer Testament, follows three friends who hike together on the first Saturday of every month, and find themselves looking back through history before they can move forwards. Phoenix Dance Theatre presents the world premiere of Windrush: Movement of the People (7 – 10 Feb). A lively celebration of the 70th anniversary of the arrival of SS Empire Windrush that brought the first Caribbean migrants to the UK.

Birdsong (13 – 17 Feb), Rachel Wagstaff’s adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ bestselling novel, is a mesmerising story of love and courage. This adaptation marks the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. And, children aren’t forgotten! Family favourites like Penguins, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Teletubbies, and Peppa Pig are all included.

The Quarry and Courtyard theatres will close for major redevelopment in June, but the Playhouse’s artistic programme will be transported to new and exciting venues, including a 350-seat theatre created in one of the Playhouse’s workshop spaces. Arts&Culture Daughters of Necessity: Serena Korda & Wakefield’s Ceramics The Hepworth Wakefield is home to an eclectic collection of ceramics by some of the great names in modern pottery, including Hans Coper and Lucy Rie. For this exhibition, British artist Serena Korda chooses a selection of these to display alongside her own work, exploring where these objects sit between function and sculpture. Korda has worked with ceramics for several years, often combining her experimental approach to the material with her interest in the acoustic properties of objects. For The Hepworth she has created a new work, ‘Resonators’, comprising five large, richly glazed vessels with openings at each end and you are are invited to place an ear to each and listen to a range of tones. The exhibition will also feature Korda’s ceramic sound installation ‘Hold Fast, Stand Sure, I Scream a Revolution’, which was first shown at Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art in 2016. It is made up of 29 individual porcelain mushrooms suspended from the ceiling, which will be played as bells in public performances during the Hepworth’s Ceramics Fair in early May.

In his essay ‘The Art of the Potter’ (written for Wakefield Art Gallery in the 1950s), Hugh Gordon Porteus refers to clay vessels as ‘daughters of necessity’, highlighting their status as both functional and decorative objects. As inspiration for the exhibition, Korda also looked to Greek mythology, where the Daughters of Necessity are born of Ananke, the goddess that personifies both necessity and fate. Serena relates the idea of the Daughters of Necessity to the activity of working in ceramics, using alchemical processes that embrace risk and failure. Daughters of Necessity is at The Hepworth Wakefield until 5th July and admission is free. A solo show of work by Serena Korda will open at BALTIC in February 2018.

Catch Some of Opera’s Most Famous Music This Winter, emotions are running high as Opera North brings its Fatal Passions season to Leeds Grand Theatre, offering three blockbuster operas packed with gripping drama and some of opera’s most famous music. First in the trio of Italian big-hitters is Puccini’s ‘Madama Butterfly’, the heart-breaking story of a young Japanese girl who falls in love with a U.S. naval officer only to be cruelly deserted by him when he returns home. Together with his child, she patiently awaits his return, not realising that he now has an American wife. ‘Madama Butterfly’ includes some of Puccini’s most popular music including the touching aria, ‘Un bel di’ (One fine day) and the ‘Flower Duet’.

Desire, betrayal and revenge also feature in Opera North’s first ever production of ‘Un ballo in maschera’ (A Masked Ball). Verdi’s insightful look at the tragic consequences of mixing politics and passion is based on a reallife event: the assassination of King Gustav of Sweden in 1792. Political intrigue gives way to an unrequited love triangle, which sets the seal on the fate of the King, despite his having decided that duty and loyalty must come before affairs of the heart. An intense and thrilling opera, it features rousing choruses and one of Verdi’s most passionate love duets, as events slowly unravel out of control. Passion of a different hue leads to cold-blooded murder in Mozart’s masterful re-telling of Don Juan and his licentious lifestyle, ‘Don Giovanni’.

This witty and compelling production takes the audience through different eras, locating the action in Victorian England one moment, and at a 1950s wedding party the next. Full of beautiful music, this must rate as the composer’s darkest, craziest opera as the tense drama inexorably leads to the moment when the seducer is finally confronted by his vengeful victims… The Fatal Passions season opens in Leeds on Friday 19th January and runs until the beginning of March, before going on tour to Nottingham, Newcastle and Salford Quays.

Food&Drink Ibérica Takes

a Walk on the Wild Side Ibérica on East Parade recently launched its new Winter menu and it definitely has leanings towards the wild side! At a special tasting evening we were treated to dishes where the main ingredient was Hare, Quail, Mallard, and Venison. The Hare came in croquettes with tartare sauce; the Quail was pan fried and served with mushroom sauce and pickled cranberries (a little finicky to eat); the seared Mallard breast came with colourful beetroot and pickled mushrooms; and the Venison came with confit Jerusalem artichokes, pine nuts and garlic aioli. The whole menu was really well received but it was the Venison that caused a sensation – everyone (apart from the veggies and pescatarians) was raving about it. And, about those veggies and pescatarians – they were not forgotten. There was aubergine with sweet and sour honey sauce topped with toasted pine nuts that just melted in your mouth; a delicious Hake dish with hollandaise sauce; a Beetroot Salad with Lamb’s lettuce and hazelnuts; Artichokes in a crispy coating with a creamy sauce; and Spanish Omelette. Of course, each course was complemented by a specially chosen sherry, wine or cider. Little did we realise what a huge gastronomic part cider plays in the lives of Asturians in Northern Spain! They are truly passionate about it, waxing lyrical about it at every opportunity. In Spain there is even a special way to pour it! Ibérica is rapidly becoming the place to go for tapas and Spanish food in Leeds. In addition, the great food and drink is complemented by the amazing building. Located at 17a East Parade, it is in what was originally home to the Auctioneers and Estate Agents John Hepper & Sons. Built in 1863 and designed by the architect George Corson, it combines Romanesque and Byzantine, French and English Gothic styles. The auction hall, which houses the main restaurant, is stunning with its huge, rectangular, glazed cupola.

Upstairs is a lovely private dining room, again with a decorative, glazed cupola, and wonderful, huge, food related portraits. There is also a wine bar in the basement serving over 70 carefully sourced Spanish wines.

of the Chevin Cross

Lunch for City Varieties

Friends of The City Varieties' Music Hall recently held a very successful fundraising luncheon for the theatre in Leeds. Spring 2018 will see the 50th anniversary of the Chevin Cross being erected on the top of Otley Chevin. First installed in 1969, the cross has become a famous Easter symbol of hope and is a fine example of a co-operative initiative by the Otley Council of Christian Churches that has become a source of comfort and inspiration to many. The first cross, which was 36ft high, was blown down in high winds on the first night. It was re-erected the next day, albeit six feet shorter! It has been erected every Easter since (except during the Foot & Mouth outbreak in 2001), and also to celebrate the Millennium.

When a new cross was built for Easter 2000, it reverted back to the original specifications and was made with wood salvaged from the bombed Arndale Centre in Manchester. To celebrate this occasion, Churches Together in Otley are hoping to produce a booklet and would like to hear from anyone who has helped with or been touched by the Cross over the years, or have any photos of the cross being erected (esp 70s or 80s). Memories should be emailed in Word (one side of A4) to otleychevincross@ gmail.com. Please scan images and send them to same email. A Facebook page ‘Friends of Otley Chevin Cross’ has been set up for the anniversary.

Led Street Lighting I have been asked whether the Council is going to upgrade its street lighting to LED to make them more cost effective and efficient. I took the question up with the Council’s Street Lighting PFI manager, who advised that the lights in Leeds were relatively new, did not need replacing yet, and were, in fact, more efficient than most authorities’ lights. So, it was difficult to recommend investing in widespread LED replacement at the present time. “This position is under constant review and as our lights get older, the cost of energy rises and LED units become cheaper there will come a

I’ve lived in North Leeds all my adult life, my children are growing up here and, as you know, it is a fantastic place to live and work. The last six months have been a whirlwind: setting up my office, recruiting a team and getting to grips with life as an MP. Through my regular advice surgeries, I’ve come to grips with the needs and problems of local people, and in many cases have helped them to achieve positive resolutions and outcomes. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of an MP’s job and I hope to meet many more constituents in 2018. Smaller than a Red Kite and quite rare in the UK, the Hen Harrier is a very beautiful long-winged bird of prey. The male is a lovely silver grey above, and white below with black wingtips. The female looks completely different, dark brown with a grey-brown barred tail and a clear white rump, which gives it the name “ringtail”. In Spring, as a courtship display, the male performs a spectacular switchback ‘sky-dance’. It breeds on the upland heather moorlands of Wales, Northern England, N Ireland and Scotland, but ranges further afield in Winter when it can be seen on fens, heaths and coastal marshes. Its numbers are augmented in Winter by visiting Hen Harriers from mainland Europe. They feed mainly on small birds, such as meadow pipits, but also on mice and voles. Of the UK's birds of prey, the Hen Harrier is the most intensively persecuted. Once a predator of free range fowl, earning its present name, its effect on the number of Grouse available to shoot is the cause of

modern conflict and threatens its survival in some parts of the UK, particularly on the driven grouse moors of England and Scotland. For this reason, the RSPB is currently running the LIFE project, which combines monitoring, awareness raising and working with landowners and local communities to protect Hen Harriers.

If you have a deciduous hedge such as Beech or Hawthorn and it has become rather larger than you intended, the winter is an excellent time to do some renovation by pruning back hard whilst it is dormant. Any really drastic reductions are best done in stages, with perhaps one side being done now, and the other side next year.

This beautiful, vigorous climber needs pruning twice a year to keep it in check and to ensure it produces plenty of flowers. The summer pruning takes place after flowering when the newly produced shoots are shortened. At this time of the year you can cut back the side shoots to two or three buds to tidy the plant up.

Plant new bare-root gooseberries, raspberries and currants now. Rhubarb plants can also be planted out, taking care to ensure the crown is just level with the soil surface. Hungry pigeons will be looking out for cabbages and other brassicas to eat, so it’s worth putting a cloche or net over these crops to keep the birds off. Crops to harvest in January include parsnips, swedes, leeks, celeriac, Jerusalem artichokes and, of course, Brussels sprouts.

Pinch out the tips when three or four sets of leaves have appeared to encourage bushy growth. When the time does come to plant them out, remember that sweet peas don’t like having their roots disturbed so if you grew several together in a pot then it’s best to plant the whole root-ball and not try to separate the individual plants.

From 27th to 29th January thousands of people around the country will once again be checking and counting the birds that visit their garden, in the world’s biggest piece of ‘citizen science’. In 2017, half a million people submitted sightings of over eight million birds – an increase in the numbers of birds visiting gardens. For example, Starlings were seen in 40% of gardens in 2016, compared with 50% in 2017. Over the last ten years, there have been increases in numbers of Goldfinches, Blackbirds and Robins, but Greenfinches, Starlings (despite the increase last year) and Chaffinches are all declining. 2017 also saw a downturn in sightings of Blue Tits, Great Tits and Coal Tits – all down by at least 10 per cent on 2016’s figures. The weather during the breeding season can have a big impact on these small birds. 2016’s prolonged wet spell meant there were fewer caterpillars about for feeding their young. It’s likely that this led to fewer younger birds surviving than

usual. Last year also saw an explosion in the number of Waxwings visiting gardens. A lack of berries in their native Scandinavia prompted an ‘irruption’ of these stunning birds, with hundreds of sightings across the UK, even as far west as Wales and Ireland. To take part in the 2018 Big Garden Birdwatch, all you need to do is find a good, comfortable place to watch your garden, and jot down what you see over an hour. Count the maximum number of each species you see at any one time. For example, if you see a group of three House Sparrows together and later another two, and after that another one, the number to submit is three. That way, it’s less likely you’ll double-count the same birds. You can also use the handy online counting tool. Building on last year’s success, Leeds Hop Growers are holding a launch event at the Horsforth Hop Shack on the evening of Friday 2nd February, where you can pick up a hop plant to literally grow beer. You don't need any brewing experience or green fingers. Through the website, anyone with space for a large pot can pre-order one or more plants to pick up at the Hop Shack social. It's £20 for the starter pack and then £10 for extra plants.

"Hops aren't difficult to grow, and by lots of us growing a variety called Cascade all over the city we can come together to make our own special beer", said Alan Thornton from the co-operative. The pack will include the rhizome (root), compost and string for it to grow up. They'll need to be planted out straight away and will grow high, with flowers at the end of Summer. You'll be harvesting the ‘cones’, as they are called, around September and they'll go straight into a special brew within a few hours. Hops are a perennial plant, which means they'll keep growing every year – which means more beer in the future! In the former Soviet Union of 1953, amid an atmosphere of terror and paranoia, where even a joke at the expense of the General Secretary could see one ‘disappeared’ or summarily executed, Stalin keels over and seems to be a goner. Immediately, his obsequious underlings of the Central Committee mobilise, jostling for position in desperate attempts to save their own skins and gain control. The central power struggle is played out between Stalin’s deputy, the vain and feckless Malenkov (Jeffery Tambor), Committee statesman Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi) and the ruthless spymaster and chief of the secret police Lavrentiy Beria (Simon Russell Beale).

Beale for his outstanding turn as the thoroughly loathsome Beria; a real piece of work, this one. Predatory, devious and utterly without scruples, he seems exactly the type who is likely to survive the transition and succeed. Until, of course, he doesn’t. As the title suggests, a thick vein of gallows humour runs through The Death of Stalin. The horrors of Stalin’s regime are bluntly depicted and while there are moments of brutality, Iannucci never misses an opportunity to highlight the absurdity amidst the chaos and cruelty.

As we’ve seen from his work on The Thick of It and its US counterpart, Veep he revels in the palace intrigue and backstabbing of political scandal. The cast of characters here is a bone fide grotesquerie and Iannucci, along with co-writer David Schneider, have tremendous fun indulging their cathartic urges by having these dreadful people be appalling to one another.

Although the film’s premise is a comedic reimagining of actual events, their depiction here; the scheming, the backbiting, the level of high farce, often seem alarmingly plausible. Superbly written and featuring top notch comic performances, this caustic, wickedly funny film is one of the year’s best.

An exceptional ensemble cast brings this veritable rogues’ gallery to life, Tambor, Buscemi, Palin et al are all excellent, but special mention must go to Simon Russell

Many people have preconceptions about what a person with dementia can and can’t do. But, in Leeds there’s a group of people who might surprise you.

Every New Year people will rush out and join a gym with the intention of getting fit or losing weight, but drop out before their membership expires. Millions of pounds is wasted nationally in the process. So, just take a minute and think about what you want to achieve. Is it to lose weight, recover from illness or injury, get fit for a sporting event or challenge, or to improve the way you feel?

The Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project (DEEP) aims to empower people with dementia and increase awareness and services locally. Called ‘Up and Go’, members living with dementia give guidance to businesses and services in the city. Last October, four members of the group, together with Dementia Friendly Volunteer, Rebecca, took part in a student Tech Challenge run by Premier Farnell, in partnership with Leeds Beckett University and Ahead Partnership. This brings together students from colleges and schools across Yorkshire, who design and create new technology for people living with a particular condition. This year, the condition was dementia.

The students asked members for their experiences of dementia and in turn received feedback on their technology solutions to various problems. Dementia affects each person differently. One person might have challenges with how they see things, another with navigating, or with language use. Living with dementia can be very challenging. St Chad’s Broomfield Cricket Club will hold its annual New Year Charity Cup from 12 noon on Saturday 6th January, to raise funds for Wheatfields Hospice. This is believed to be the first outdoor match of the year anywhere in the country, so go along and support these committed cricketers and a worthy local charity. Club President and St Chad’s Vicar, Tom Lusty, will put together a community team to challenge the Chairman’s XI, who have won the cup on each of the last two occasions. Last year’s game went down to the very last ball! The result this year will be as unpredictable as the weather, but the plan is to play in whatever is thrown at them. The club started a women and girl’s section last year and Club Chairman, Paul Berry, is expected to put out a mixed team of men, women, boys and girls to show off the wide range of cricket that the club offers. With

15 senior and junior teams, playing both at the weekend and midweek, 2018 is expected to be another busy year at the club, which plays in front of St Chad’s Church on Otley Road. There may also be an appearance by the club’s overseas player, Mitch Lewis who, along with his girlfriend, decided to stay in the country over the winter instead of heading back to the warmth of Australia. Hot food and drinks will be available to keep everyone warm, with all proceeds going to Wheatfield Hospice, who have been the club’s Charity Partner for the past few years. The club is always looking for new players, volunteers and sponsors. Younger Life 'Snap out of It' Yorkshire children’s author Donna Iliffe-Pollard has joined forces with mental health counsellor Lynn Crilly to tackle very real mental health issues in her latest book, ‘Snap Out of it’. The book follows the friendship of 15 year old Bea, who has anorexia, and her classmate Harry who suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Bea seems to have it all, but you can hide a lot behind a smile, a dodgy outfit and oneliners. Underneath, her ever-shrinking body is fighting a secret battle that rages more ferociously as each day dawns. For Harry, life couldn’t get any worse. As his bizarre rituals spiral out of control, the demon on his shoulder grows stronger and stronger sending him into a downward spiral. “It’s time to end the stigma surrounding mental health in children and young adults”, said Donna, a Child Friendly Leeds Ambassador who was drawn to write the book after watching a childhood friend struggle with bulimia and depression. “What better way to develop a clearer understanding than through fiction.” Mental Health Therapist Lynn Crilly is well known for her work in the field of teen anxiety and disorders. “I welcome the government’s latest pledge to tackle mental health in children but feel there is much more to be done”, she said. “We hope this book will help families going through similar problems.”

Newlaithes Primary Builds a Viking Long House Pupils from Horsforth Newlaithes Primary School recently constructed their own Viking long house, helped by graduates working with Redrow Homes.

Anna Park, Y-4 teacher, added: “We have opened the Y-4’s Viking exhibition and the long house really adds a new dimension.”

The project was part of the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme ‘Big Build Competition’, which involved building a structure from recyclable materials. Pupils were asked to collect recyclable material from home, while Redrow sourced recyclable materials from construction sites. The Y-4 pupils were involved at all the different stages - from design to mixing clay, soil and water to create a paste before sticking it to the long house and covering the paste with hay.
