Meet the Frenchies - The annual Francophone Day in Yorkshire - is a celebration of French language, culture and all things French. Now in its fourth year, the aim of the event is to provide an opportunity for local residents and the French community to meet and create bonds. Different Francophone organisations, artists, businesses and individuals will be involved, offering bilingual activities and entertainment for adults and children. Everyone will have the opportunity to practice French no matter what their level.

Everything will be in both languages, with workshops, talks, games, tastings, entertainments, etc. for adults and children. The day starts at 12 noon with a delicious French, three course buffet meal (a French style children’s menu is available) specially cooked by the hotel’s chef. The family friendly activities follow the meal and the event finishes around 5pm.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

Mary Edith Pechey- Phipson MD Pioneering doctor and campaigner In 1877 a remarkable woman came to live and work in Leeds. Her name was Edith Pechey, already well known as one of the tiny band of intrepid women who had dared to challenge the medical establishment, fighting – and ultimately winning – a long and bitter battle to gain medical qualifications and be allowed to practise. When she arrived in Leeds she was one of only seven women in the country who had won the right to be registered as a doctor.

Edith Pechey came originally from the village of Langham, Essex, the sixth child of the Baptist Minister there, born in 1845. She inherited a love of learning from her parents, and her first work was in teaching, but her ambition was to study and practise medicine, particularly in the field of women’s health. Many women died in childbirth and infant deaths were commonplace, yet obstetrics did not feature in medical training, and medicine was a totally male preserve. She met other women prepared to fight for the right to qualify, and in 1869 she joined four others applying to enter the prestigious School of Medicine in Edinburgh. They passed the exams for admission but had to be taught separately from the men, at much higher fees. They achieved excellent results, but endured insults and constant harassment, at one point braving a noisy, stone-throwing mob. And when Edith won a prestigious prize for chemistry, it was refused because she was a woman. This blatant injustice evoked letters to The Times and passionate confrontations in Edinburgh, where two professors refused point-blank to teach the women ‘improper’ subjects like Anatomy. Another claimed that medical education for women would be a ‘curse to civilisation’. The opposition won the day (afraid of potential competition?). The women

completed their studies successfully but they were not granted degrees and lost their legal action against the University. There was no giving-up – they sought to qualify elsewhere. Finally, after a year working at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital, Edith gained her M.D. in 1877 from the University of Berne in Switzerland (taking her exams in German) and acquired further qualifications in Dublin, enabling her, after more argument, to be registered to practise. Where next? She already had links with Yorkshire, where she had given courses of lectures on women’s health for the Yorkshire Ladies’ Council of Education. She also had contacts with the lively group of women (and men) in Leeds who were campaigning for better educational opportunities for women. Knowing she would have supportive friends, she chose to come to Leeds, setting up in practice in Park Square and living first in Warwick Villas, near the Infirmary, and then in a charming, seventeenth century house in rural Bramley. No doubt she encountered prejudice, but it is said that this was soon dispelled by her charm, intelligence, and generosity of mind. No details of her work in Leeds are known, but she may have had links with the Public Dispensary which looked after the needs of the poor, her particular care and interest. She was also in great demand as a speaker, giving

the keynote inaugural address at the opening of the London School of Medicine for Women in 1877; lecturing on health and nursing for the Yorkshire Ladies’ Council; addressing the Social Science Congress in Edinburgh in 1880; and speaking in campaigns for women’s suffrage, another cause close to her heart. In 1882 she was elected President of the Medical Women’s Federation of England. Then, in 1883, she accepted a fresh challenge: to head up a new hospital and dispensary in India, where women’s health was being damaged by seclusion and child marriage, yet they were barred from treatment by male doctors. Women doctors were desperately needed. She gave up her work in Leeds to a fellow woman doctor, Alice Ker, and after an arduous journey, arrived in Bombay to begin what became her life

work. She established hospitals, set up medical training for women, campaigned against child marriage. When she was 44 she met Herbert Phipson, a businessman who shared her concerns and interests, and they married. With his support she continued her work, though her health was suffering. She and her husband finally returned to England in 1905, but she did not rest. She had kept her Yorkshire friends, and represented Leeds and Huddersfield in the ongoing campaigns for women’s suffrage. In 1907 she marched bravely at the head of the famous ‘Mud March’, but she was already seriously ill. A year later she died of breast cancer and diabetes, aged 67. She was described as the ablest of those brave pioneering women who broke through the barriers – Leeds can be proud of the support it offered her.

‘Wicked’ Flies Back to Leeds Grand Having thrilled over 42,000 people in 2014, the wonderful show ‘Wicked’ is flying back to Leeds Grand Theatre from Wednesday 13th June to Saturday 7th July. Based on the Gregory Maguire novel that re-imagines the stories and characters originally created by L. Frank Baum in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, ‘WICKED’ tells the story of the deep friendship between two sorcery students and their extraordinary adventures in Oz, which ultimately lead them to fulfilling their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West. It stars Amy Ross as Elphaba (who recently starred in the musical ‘Kinky Boots’ in the West End), Helen Woolf as Glinda (who has played this role many times), Aaron Sidwell as Fiyero (Steven Beale in EastEnders), Steven Pinder as The Wizard and Doctor Dillamond, Kim Ismay as Madame Morrible, Emily Shaw as Nessarose and Iddon Jones as Boq. Company Manager, Anthony Field, has been with the show for eight years and is still hugely enthusiastic about it. “Being on the road with such a huge production demands careful planning and a huge amount of thought goes in to safely transporting and assembling

the sets, costumes, props, and all of the technical equipment”, he told us. “As well as all the elements of the physical production, around 80 staff tour with the show fulltime from various departments such as stage management, wardrobe, sound and lighting. Arts&Culture Gallery Celebrates Tenth Anniversary with New Exhibition A new exhibition at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery celebrates the tenth anniversary of the refurbishment that created a space for the University of Leeds to engage people in the city and beyond with its art collection. The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery was launched in the enlarged and enhanced space in the University’s Parkinson Building on 6th March 2008, and the exhibition ‘Transformation’ celebrates the extensive contributions made by Stanley and Audrey Burton, Hilary Diaper and the general public to the development and success of the gallery space. “It was a considerable change from the old University Gallery”, said Layla Bloom, the University’s art curator. “Ten years on from the Gallery’s transformation, this is an opportune time to consider what the Burton family has made possible. The expanded and revitalised spaces have provided greater scope to share the collection and they also allow deeper interaction with it.”

‘Transformation’ will feature key artworks from the collection, including artists like Stanley Spencer, Jacob Epstein, Terry Frost, Atkinson Grimshaw and many others. The exhibition is not only a thank you to all the Gallery’s visitors but also a collaborative effort with them. Labels for selected artworks will be written by the Gallery’s audience and gathered via social media.

Its greatest strengths are textiles from South Sulawesi, Bali, and West and East Nusa Tenggara. The O’Hear Collection contains both hand drawn and stenciled batiks and complex weaves, including Adire block printing, stencil prints and tie-dye. Playhouse Searches for Heart of Leeds Ahead of Redevelopment

In the final production in the Quarry Theatre ahead of redevelopment, West Yorkshire Playhouse presents ‘Searching for the Heart of Leeds’, a community celebration, from Tuesday 19th – Saturday 23rd June. More than 70 people are taking part, performing roles both on and offstage, alongside six community choirs and a band of eight musicians recruited from across the city. Written by BAFTA-winning writer Mark Catley, it is inspired by Leeds stories and follows the journey of a lost Loiner as they search the landmarks and histories of the city to discover what makes Leeds Leeds.

“’Searching for the Heart of Leeds’ is a collection of stories, some nostalgic, some contemporary, which, when knitted together, give a real and emotional reflection of what it means to live in Leeds”, said Mark. “Listening to my fellow Loiners has been a pleasure, and I hope that audiences enjoy their stories as much as I have.” One of the participants, John Poulter, is hoping to survive the dance workshops so he can be part of it! “It’s the best kind of adventure”, he said “Every session takes you out beyond yourself. And you’re doing it all with great people, a great script and a fantastic team of professionals. It’s a brilliant project and I think the end result will be joyous!”

‘Searching for the Heart of Leeds’, with musical direction and composition by Caution Collective’s Christella Litras, and movement direction by Phoenix Dance Theatre, is a true celebration of people, theatre and our city. “The Playhouse has always been a theatre for the people”, said Director of Creative Engagement, Alexander Ferris. “This project is the next stage in the development of that idea. We’ve got a brilliant cast and company that represents Leeds in all its diversity and it makes sense that The Quarry will be full of those voices immediately prior to our redevelopment. Bubble Schmeisis - a Hilarious Journey to a ‘Schvitz’!

Laurence Pusey at The Atrium Gallery The latest exhibition at the lovely Atrium Gallery in the Bexley Wing at St James' University Hospital features paintings by Leeds artist Laurence Pusey. Showing until 29th July, these recent paintings, mainly in oils, are based on morning walks along farm tracks in Greece and Cyprus, inspired by the blue skies, and rich golden grass, contrasting with the twisted limbs and colour of the olive trees.

Laurence is well known in Yorkshire for his use of rich pigment in a postimpressionist style. Each work has one overriding colour which dominates, supported by contrasting colours. A group of young performers has been inspired by stories of Caribbean heritage to create a show to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the arrival of The Windrush. The Geraldine Connor Foundation production ‘Sorrel & Black Cake’ captures the pioneering spirit of West Indian migrants to Britain through music, movement, and oral history. It is based on the memories of individuals who made the crossing from the Caribbean to Leeds in the 1940s and 50s.

Christella Litras has been working with the group to explore the amalgamation of musical genres in Black Britain from the late 1940s (calypso, mento, Kumina, reggae and gospel), weaving them into the narrative of Sorrel & Black Cake.

This project has made possible through the Heritage Lottery Young Roots Programme, the Emerald Foundation and Leeds City Council, and is supported by Creative Learning Partnerships, Leeds Young Authors, Molineaux Productions, Peepal Tree Press and RJC Dance.

A special presentation and discussion with the cast will take place at the Windrush Symposium, Leeds Becket University on 9th June.

On Behalf of The People The powerful story of a post-war mining family coming to terms with their rapidly changing world comes to The Carriageworks on 22nd June. Written by Ray Castleton, co-founder of The Melting Shop theatre company, ‘On Behalf of The People’ reveals the struggle that affected millions from mining communities in the face of enormous political and social change. It is a family drama filled with warmth, humour and realism. Set in a Yorkshire mining town, it follows George Mason, his wife Connie, their son - returning solider Tom - and his fiancée, from the immediate aftermath of the war to 1953. “On Behalf of the People is about how the aftermath of the war impacted people who lived in mining communities”, said Ray. “I was keen to write a story about real people and how their lives and relationships changed; the reaction we received last year confirms that this is a story that touches people with its authenticity and honesty.”

It premièred to great acclaim at the National Coal Mining Museum and a short and highly successful run of community venues across Yorkshire and Derbyshire followed. The production now embarks on its first major tour, spanning regional theatres, community venues and ex-mining villages across Yorkshire and Derbyshire, and playing at the Buxton and Greater Manchester Fringe Festivals.

Arts&Culture Summer Solstice Festival 2018 The Summer Solstice Festival, back for its seventh year, is expanding its programme to two days of concerts, talks and recitals on Thursday 21st/ Friday 22nd June. This year, South Asian Arts-uk is joining forces with Leeds College of Music to explore India’s classical music tradition. The Festival will also be an opportunity to hear a variety of early Indian instruments – like the veena, sarangi, ghatam and mridangam, alongside the more popular sitar and tabla.

International artists like Carnatic musician Dr Jayanthi Kumaresh and the celebrated, innovative artist Suhail Khan, will share the stage with rising stars Jasdeep Singh Degun and Gurdain Singh Rayatt, showcasing some of the best Indian classical music. The concerts will take place in the new Leeds College of Music rooftop extension, providing a backdrop of breathtaking city views while listening to trancelike melodies, and The Venue.

Dr Jayanthi Kumaresh comes from a long line of musicians and started playing the Saraswati Veena at the age of three. He has performed at numerous international festivals, including San Francisco Jazz Festival and Darbar Festival.

Both days will begin with a relaxed lunchtime recital at 1pm, and continue with a free Indian Music Appreciation pre-show talk (6 – 7pm), followed by the ‘One Evening: Two Traditions’ double bill performance, ending at 11pm.

Suhail Khan begun his classical training with his grandfather, the world-famous Ustad Sabri Khan. His skill and versatility have led him to explore fusion music with the likes of folk supergroup Yorkston/Thorne/ Khan, who played Glastonbury 2017.

The Hepworth Wakefield opens two exciting new photography exhibitions this month that have surrealism at their core. ‘Lee Miller and Surrealism in Britain’ and ‘Viviane Sassen: Hot Mirror’ present two extraordinary photographers from different eras and run from 22nd June – 7th October. ‘Lee Miller and Surrealism in Britain’ explores photographer Lee Miller’s involvement with surrealist circles in Britain in the late 1930s. She was one of the most original photographic artists of the 20th century, whose work spanned the fields of fashion, photojournalism and art. Arriving in Paris in 1929, Miller quickly became Man Ray’s apprentice, muse and collaborator, becoming part of the Surrealist network. During WW

II she was a freelance war correspondent employed by British Vogue, capturing thoughtprovoking images of Hitler’s secret apartments and the harrowing atrocities of wartime living. This exhibition presents the creative collaborations with the artists Miller knew, photographed, and exhibited with during a time when Britain was recognised as a ‘Surrealist centre’. Sculptures, paintings, photographs, collages and works on paper by artists Eileen Agar, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, René Magritte and Henry Moore will also feature.

‘Viviane Sassen: Hot Mirror’ presents a survey of work by the Dutch artist and photographer Viviane Sassen, one of the most innovative photographers working today, and cites Surrealism as one of her earliest influences, seen in the uncanny shadows, fragmented bodies and dreamlike landscapes in her work. Sassen has selected images from her art photography series of the last ten years, as well as new photographs and collages. These create ‘image-poems’ that draw on the Surrealist strategies of collage. Hot Mirror will also present a new version of Sassen’s immersive film, Totem, 2014, which places the visitor inside a surreal landscape.

Arts&Culture AEONS: A Sound Walk Along the River Tyne

This Summer, ‘Aeons’, a new sound walk commissioned by Opera North, will take audiences on a musical journey along the banks of the Tyne and back through the ages in the centre of Newcastle as part of the Great Exhibition of the North 2018. This is an epic piece of music designed to be heard through headphones during a half-hour walk along Hadrian’s Wall Path and is the work of Martin Green of the folk trio Lau. It features the vocals of Becky Unthank (The Unthanks), Mogwai’s Dominic Aitchison, the chorus and orchestra of Opera North, and field recordings made along the river.

“We often think of music as the soundtrack to our lives”, said Martin Green. “This half hour has been designed to reflect our changing surroundings as we follow the River Tyne past the vestiges of centuries of human history, and back into deep geological time. “As a composer, I’ve never had this degree of control over how people actually listen to the music. This music has been made for the specific headphones everyone will be wearing. It gave me a freedom I’ve never had before – to make tiny sounds and place them right next to the listener or come up in the middle of a 32-strong chorus and hear those singers from every direction. The field recordings, painstakingly made in true binaural sound on Hadrian’s Wall Path, add another extraordinary sonic dimension. “Working with the orchestra and chorus of Opera North has been a joyous experience. And who better to celebrate the North East than Becky Unthank, who has graced Aeons with her matchless vocals and incredible knowledge of traditional song.” Aeons will open as part of the spectacular Get North! opening event on Friday 22nd June at the Great Exhibition of the North’s Quayside Hub. Walks will run at 10am, 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm each day from Monday to Saturday until Friday 7th September (ex Mon 23 July & Mon 20 Aug). New Young Company at WYP West Yorkshire Playhouse has announced its first Young Company; a collective of 12 creatively curious artists aged 18 – 25 from across Leeds, including actors, writers and theatre producers, DJs and live artists who will collaborate with the Playhouse over the coming months. Mentored by WYP’s Director of Creative Engagement Alexander Ferris and Associate Director Amy Leach, the group will spend a year producing an eclectic range of work. The Playhouse will support the group to collaborate in making bold and socially resonant work, as well as providing opportunities to learn from professional theatre artists and use Playhouse resources to learn and develop their own skills. “We put out a call for applications through our youth theatre projects and our partner organisations – like RJC Dance, Leeds College of Music etc – and received about 60 applications”, said Amy. “Our role has a very strong supportive, pastoral element. The idea is to help these young people on their individual creative journeys and help them develop pathways. “West Yorkshire Playhouse will provide a connection, a creative home where they can feel like an artist and receive support and advice on how to take their projects forward every step of the way or collaborate with other members of the Company.”

Food Festival Returns to Roundhay Park The North Leeds Food Festival returns to Roundhay Park on 30th June/ 1st July, showcasing a huge selection of the region’s best talent in food, drink and performing arts. Now in its third year, the festival centres around international cuisine with over 100 globally inspired traders and, this year there will also be a number of specialist Vegan traders. A new festival layout, housed in giant marquees, is in an Artisan Producer Market style, featuring the region’s most exciting, emerging food and drink brands.

Far Headingley Beer Festival The second Far Headingley Beer Festival will take place from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th June (11am -11pm) at St Chad’s Parish Centre, organised by St Chad’s Broomfield Cricket Club. Melodeons, bells and drums will be heard across Otley as the dancers recognise Wayzgoose’s significant anniversary. “The popularity of Wayzgoose increases with each passing year and we’re thrilled we’ve made it to our quarter century”, said founding member, Anita Walker.

“We started in 1993 as a small group of friends performing locally. Over the years we have acquired more dancers and performed with groups from America, Australia, Romania and France. “The Horsforth Walk of Art is a wonderful weekend festival celebrating our community and the brilliantly creative people living in and around it”, said founder and organiser Lara Rule. “The weekend will showcase artists, craftspeople and community projects, and every venue will host free activities and workshops. “We wanted a theme that would celebrate the great outdoors and ‘Down at the Bottom of the Garden’ does just that. Leeds Young Talent Leeds Young Talent is a show that invites 14 – 25 year olds with a learning disability to take part in a competition to perform at the Leeds College of Music on 27th June. Organised and supported by People in Action, Leeds City College, Leeds College of Music and People Matters, Leeds Young Talent encourages young people who can act, dance, sing, perform poetry, or do comedy or magic, to have a go. The applicants will be whittled down to a final six through auditions in May and the finalists will perform in an evening show at Leeds College of Music.

This is the second year for Leeds Young Talent and this year it falls the week after Learning Disability Awareness week in Leeds. The show on 27th June starts at 6.30pm (doors open 6pm) and finishes at 8.30pm. There will be two winners - one picked by the judges and one by the audience. Looking to a Plastic Free North Leeds Last year, Blue Planet 2 shocked audiences up and down the country by showing the horrific result of years of plastic over use. Vast floating islands of plastic, bleached coral reefs, wildlife caught in plastic bottles and some of the most beautiful and inspiring ocean vistas blighted by plastic bags and waste. In the last ten years we have produced more plastic than the entire preceding century and have only recovered around 5% through recycling. Leeds has better recycling systems in place than most, but this alone will not even get close to solving the problem.

That’s why we must change our behaviour. As a member of the Environmental Audit Committee, I pushed hard for the ‘Latte Levy’, as well as for legislation requiring restaurants and take away outlets to provide free water refills. Although these fights are ongoing, we as individuals can make a significant and immediate difference simply by being conscious of our own consumption.

St Giles Church has organised an evening of entertainment on 7th July, featuring Chorus Choirs by Andy Booth. Bramhope Village Hall welcomes Adel Players for a performance of ‘A Murder of Crows’ on 8th June, and the popular Cabaret Evening with the Derrick Harris Quartet will be at the Hall on 14th July. Last year's Mini Breeze at West Park Rugby Club was such a great success that they are holding it again on 16th June; and Bramhope Primary School's Scarecrow Hunt and Summer Festival on 30th June.

‘Violet’ is a new, professional dance piece choreographed by artistic director Emma Clayton. It captures the memories of 91-year-old Violet, a member of the Hawksworth Wood community who served in the Land Army, and tells her story

through contemporary dance, hip hop, music and song. It is a joyful, heartfelt, WWII story. This will be followed by an intergenerational performance by the Blood Memory Dance community project, established by Emma Clayton last year. It explores intergenerational relationships, and storytelling through dance and music. Working with HOPS (Hawksworth Older People Society otherwise known as Helping Old People Smile!) and Hawksworth Primary School, it aims to bring the generations together. Home Garden Terns are superficially similar to small Gulls, but there are important differences. In the UK, Terns are Summer visitors, arriving to breed off our coasts in Spring and leaving in Autumn. They generally have long, pointed wings and long, deeply forked tails, and are fast and agile fliers. The most widespread Tern in the UK is the Common Tern, with mostly grey and white plumage, red legs, a black head and a red beak. The bill of an adult has a black tip to it, which is one way of distinguishing it from the very similar Arctic Tern. Common Terns can breed singly or in large colonies, both on the coast and on inland waters. They have a direct, powerful flight and when fishing, fly with their bills pointed downwards. One of the joys of Summer is to watch a Common Tern hunting along a river or canal, hovering above the water, before plunging down to catch a fish.

They are also noisy and vocal birds, especially in colonies. During the 20th century, there was a decline in the number of breeding Common Terns in the UK, but measures, such as the creation of Tern rafts and breeding islands, have greatly helped them. Planting a Million Trees!

40th Anniversary Year The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), Hollybush, based in Kirkstall have planted hundreds of trees in primary schools across Leeds. The Trees for Learning Project is part of a nationwide scheme for primary schools to plant a million trees by 2020. Many schools across Leeds and Kirklees have signed up to the scheme that provides free trees for schools as part of the project, funded by DEFRA and the White Rose Forest. To recognise St Gemma’s 40th Anniversary, the Hospice has commissioned a handcrafted iron flower from the British Ironwork Centre. This beautiful Forever Flower can be yours for a suggested minimum donation of £25. Each Flower is a colourful keepsake that comes complete with a specially designed celebration card which can be dedicated to the memory of your loved ones.

Several schools have planted their own orchards. Others have created a new hedge, screening their school playground from the road. All trees that were planted were native species including: Oak, Rowan, Grey Alder and Hawthorn.

Your Forever Flower will be part of a spectacular display throughout the Summer at the hospice and can be viewed at St Gemma’s Open Garden event on Saturday 16th June, when you can take a leisurely stroll around the awardwinning gardens and enjoy the beautiful surroundings with some lovely musical entertainment.

I would say probably not, but it’s an outrageously lurid, blood soaked, ultraviolent shocker that, if nothing else, is certainly effective on a visceral level.

At a remote, secluded holiday home in the middle of the desert, Richard (Kevin Janssens) and his mistress Jen (Matilda Lutz) arrive for an illicit tryst ahead of Richard’s annual hunting trip with his buddies Stan and Dimitri, who unexpectedly arrive a day early. The four of them spend an evening drinking and partying. The next morning, while Richard is out of the house, Stan makes advances on Jen claiming that she was coming on to him the night before. When Jen rebuffs him Stan sexually assaults her, briefly interrupted by Dimitri who turns a blind eye. When Richard returns and learns of what happened, he offers Jen a sum of money to keep the incident quiet but Jen refuses and threatens to come clean to Richard’s wife about their affair. Enraged, Richard strikes Jen and she makes a run for it with the three men giving chase. They catch up to her soon enough whereupon Richard pushes her off a cliff and she ends up impaled on a tree below. Remarkably, Jen survives this and, after extricating herself from this sticky predicament (with a substantial piece of tree still poking out of her), she spends a night in a cave. Following some resourceful and inventive field surgery (aided by the powerful hallucinogen peyote) she emerges, phoenix-like as a seemingly unstoppable vengeful agent of retribution and sets about tracking down and dispatching her tormentors. In essence, it’s a pretty stripped-down, straight forward exercise without a great deal of dialogue and a not particularly original cat-and-mouse/huntersbecome-the-hunted premise. Writer/ director Coralie Fargeat is clearly a talented filmmaker; deftly cranking up tension, dynamically handling the action sequences and imbuing the proceedings with a hint of the surreal and a striking visual style. However, given that the film arrives amid an urgent and explosive reckoning surrounding sexual violence, harassment and abuse, aside from the gratifying and cathartic spectacle of terrible men being brutally served their just desserts and a strong (apparently

The film frequently strains plausibility to the point where it risks tipping over into flat-out absurdity as it gets increasingly, deliriously over the top. Fargeat seems to have plenty of fun ramping up the film’s weirdness and gruesome ridiculousness but whether that translates to enjoyment for the audience is an open question. The squeamish would be wise to give Revenge a wide berth but I imagine there’s a particular kind of entertainment to be found for those with a suitably study constitution and a fondness for the outre splatterfest. invincible) badass heroine at its centre, any purported feminist angle seems to ring somewhat hollow, despite having a female director at the helm. The ninth Headingley Music Festival takes place from 5th – 16th June with a great line-up of bands and local artists and it promises to be the biggest and best yet! Irish Arts kick off proceedings at Café Lento on Tuesday 5th June with an evening of traditional Irish Music. The popular Music Quiz is at HEART Cafe with several prizes up for grabs. The David Broad Trio will be playing traditional American music from swing, blues, gospel and ragtime to a bit of Country at the New Headingley Club on Saturday 9th June at 8pm. On Monday 11th there will be a special, free screening of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at Hyde Park Picture House for those with memory problems and their carers. The Staging of New Briggate Blues Chris Nickson is a prolific writer. He has turned out over 25 books and many of them are based in and around Leeds and set during different time periods. ‘Dark Briggate Blues’ and its sequel ‘The New Eastgate Swing’ are set in Leeds during the 1950s, seen through the eyes of enquiry agent Dan Markham. Studio 20 (where Sela Bar is today on Briggate) was in full swing with jazz seven nights a week. It was the only dedicated jazz club in Leeds and attracted the likes of bluesman Jimmy Rushing, traditional jazz legend Ken Colyer, vocalist and raconteur George Melly, and sax legends Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott. As with many of Chris’s books, he weaves in snippets of family history. Dark Briggate Blues gave him the opportunity to draw on his father’s experience as a jazz pianist in bands in Leeds in 1930s.

A live jazz quintet, featuring singer Jenny Smith, will provide a soundtrack to his thoughts and memories of Studio 20 – mostly 50’s jazz classics, including Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Tubby Hayes. New Briggate Blues is directed by Leeds writer and broadcaster Ray Brown, who has directed numerous plays. “The structure and characters were there but it has been a very interesting experience making them into stage characters”, he said. “I am playing the role of dramaturg and enjoying it immensely, taking Chris’s story and redrafting it for the Carriageworks stage. Now I’m really looking forward to starting rehearsals.” New Briggate Blues is at The Carriageworks Theatre on Monday 23rd July.

Trust Backs Leeds Research into Devastating Disease Thanks to the support of The Kennedy Trust for Rheumatology Research and the University of Leeds, researchers in Leeds are hoping for a breakthrough in the treatment of the devastating immune system disease Scleroderma – an inflammatory disease that leads to the scarring and thickening of the skin and internal organs. Though rare, it can have a devastating effect on patients’ lives. Some suffer highly debilitating symptoms – their hands and fingers become permanently stiff and clenched, their muscles and internal organs are damaged, they can suffer shortness of breath, kidney failure and pulmonary hypertension. Once patients get to this stage the condition is not reversible and long-term prognosis is very poor. The new research has two main aims – to find tell-tale markers that will allow doctors to identify patients most at risk of developing the disease, and to find the processes at work in those patients that have the potential to be blocked by drugs. “We are really grateful for this support,” said Dr Francesco Del Galdo, who sees patients from across the region in his clinic at Chapel Allerton Hospital. “Right

now we don’t know what triggers the scarring process. If we can get a clearer understanding of this, we can then search for the molecules that might actually prevent it. And, if we can develop a test to identify patients at risk, we can concentrate on giving early treatments to those most urgently in need.” During the three-year trial, Dr Del Galdo will work with colleagues from London and Manchester to establish a cohort of 400 patients identified as being at risk of developing scleroderma. Studying these patients will help the researchers to determine which methods of diagnosis provide the most accurate picture of the patient’s future. At the same time, they will seek out the possible future targets for drugs. The clinical, biological and lifestyle data gathered from these patients – alongside information about which of them went on to develop scleroderma – will also become a rich resource for future studies into the disease, both in the UK and overseas.

“At present, patients with the most aggressive forms of scleroderma have a very poor prognosis”, says Dr Del Galdo. “The support of the Kennedy Trust will hopefully enable us to identify patients before they suffer irreversible organ damage, and make early interventions that will stop this disease in its tracks.” Based at Chapel Allerton, the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine and the NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre are world-leading research groups dedicated to improving diagnosis, therapy, intervention and outcomes across the spectrum of rheumatic and musculoskeletal medicine. The Kennedy Trust was established in 1965 by Mathilda Kennedy – the daughter of M&S founder Michael Marks – provides financial support for research into rheumatic and related musculoskeletal, immunological and inflammatory diseases. This research continues a long-standing relationship between the University of Leeds and the Marks family.

Health&Fitness The NHS Chalks Up Another Anniversary On 5th July, the NHS celebrates its 70th anniversary! There is no denying that it has problems and is desperately underfunded, but it is still one of the best health services in the world and we must fight to preserve it. That’s what Leeds Hospital Alert does – quietly campaigning to save this great institution. The NHS was first proposed in 1946 by Aneurin Bevan, Minister for Health and chief architect of the NHS. His plan was to bring together voluntary and municipal hospitals which would be managed by local hospital boards. Teaching hospitals were to have autonomy and be run by a board of governors accountable to the Minister of Health.

Among those who opposed the new health service were the large voluntary hospitals in London, which were concerned that they might lose their independence. But the NHS was here to stay. GPs remained self-employed and there was no charge to see them – a huge relief to the majority of people. Obviously there have been many changes over the years – some for better, some for worse. One was the outsourcing to private companies of ancillary services in the 1980s, some of which have had their contracts terminated because the services provided were not up to scratch.

Another was regrading nurses to reflect the job they did. Although this sounded good in theory, it resulted in some confusion as health boards interpreted the national guidelines differently which led to some hospitals losing staff to others that paid nurses on a higher scale. And, PFI has left some hospitals with huge debts that will take years to pay off. There have been some good decisions too. In 1959 mental health was included in the NHS and in 1965 money was allotted to subsidise the cost of GP surgeries and help with staff pay and conditions. Bevan opened the Park Hospital Manchester on 5th July 1948 and for the first-time hospital doctors, nurses, dentists, opticians and pharmacists all came together in one organisation to provide services that were paid for by general taxation and free for all at the point of need. This was one of the most significant social reforms of the twentieth century and led to Britain being the envy of the world.

Today we have to pay for some services – dentistry, podiatry, ophthalmology and prescriptions – but by and large the concept of the NHS remains intact. We may complain about waiting times, but we know that we will be seen and will not have to show our credit cards before treatment – or actually be refused treatment for lack of funds!

Younger Life Lawnswood Art, Textiles & Design Technology Exhibition 2018 Lawnswood School will host its ninth Art & Design Exhibition on Thursday 5th July, 6-8pm. This is a free event open to the Lawnswood families and the general public and will showcase the very best of Lawnswood creative talent in paintings, drawings, textiles, 3D and multimedia. Over 60 students will be exhibiting. The work of primary Year 6 children, carried out as part of an art transition workshop run by the school, will also be on display.

The standard of work continues to be exceptional and, as in previous years, there will be the opportunity to commission and purchase particular pieces The Exhibition will also include work from Year 6 primary school children who attended ‘art workshops’ run by the Lawnswood Art Department earlier this year.

The exhibition is a joint project between staff, students and the Friends of Lawnswood School Association. It aims to inspire students by exhibiting their work to a professional standard, mimicking an exhibition ‘opening’, with music, refreshments and artwork descriptions. Some of the exhibits will take you on the artist’s journey from first inspiration and conception, to development and final output. The standard of work continues to be exceptional and, as in previous years, there will be the opportunity to commission and purchase particular pieces.

Mad Hatters LEAP Ahead in Enterprise Scheme Mad Hatters, a student run company from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) recently showed they had heads for business by scooping four accolades at the eleventh annual LEAP awards, which recognise budding entrepreneurship in West Yorkshire secondary schools.

Run by ten Year 12 GSAL students, Mad Hatters won LEAP’s top prize, the Westcom Networks Award: Best LEAP Enterprise Company 2018, for their hat business. They also won awards for best company report, best trade fair marketing and best company presentation. They were one of 18 companies participating in LEAP this year, involving 200 students from GSAL, Bradford Girls Grammar School, Allerton High School, Ralph Thoresby School and Woodhouse Grove. “Each of this year’s teams has achieved a very high standard, although the winning teams really did stand out from the rest of the field”, said LEAP chair Steve Webber, managing director of Westcom Networks. “Each pupil spent valuable time creating new brands and services whilst learning about how to take them to market, control costs and report responsibly about all aspects of business.

The Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme (LEAP) is a social enterprise that enables students (aged 14 – 19) to set up their own companies for a year. They have to raise their own share capital, choose and make or buy a product, write a business plan and market the product. At the end of the year, teams present their ‘company’
