The month of March is Irish History Month in Leeds. First celebrated in 2007, this Irish Arts Foundation initiative is now in its twelfth year. It exists to promote the many positive contributions that Irish people have made in Leeds and to introduce new audiences to the vibrancy of Irish arts, heritage, culture and history. Particular highlights this year include concerts from John Doyle, John McCusker and Michael McGoldrick on Sunday 4th March, and Luke Daniels and Nancy Kerr on Saturday 10th March, both at Otley Courthouse. Clannad’s Moya Brennan performs at the City Varieties on Monday 12th March. On Wednesday 21st there is a lecture on traditional Irish music by Professor David Cooper at Café Humanite, Ilkley, and there’s a welcome return from singer/ songwriter J. Eoin on tour from Limerick who will perform at Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton. A traditional Irish music session takes place on the Kirkstall Flyboat at Canary Wharf early evening on Sunday 25th. There will be a screening of ‘Kings of the Kilburn High Road’ (2007) in Hyde Park Picture House on the afternoon of Sunday 25th, in collaboration with Headingley LitFest

Life&Style Band Buddies Reunited At Headingley Hall After Seventy Years! Len Bower and Dennis Woods, who played in the popular Four Star Swing Quartet in the 1940s, have been reunited at Westward Care’s Headingley Hall Care Home and Apartments after seventy years!

Len Bower (97) recently moved to Headingley Hall and by sheer coincidence discovered that his former band mate and pianist Dennis Woods (92) was also a client there. The two musicians have since been reminiscing about the wonderful times they had playing together in and around Leeds.

The Four Star Swing Quartet, led by clarinet player Len Bower, was a big hit in the late 1940s. The band scooped Melody Maker’s Dance Band Championship Winning Band in 1947 and all four individual musician awards at the same competition. Shortly afterwards, Dennis Woods left the band to become a professional pianist and seventy years later, he and Len have been reunited.

“I still can’t quite believe that after all this time, Len and I have met again”, said Dennis. “Len was telling me the story of his swing band and its remarkable pianist when I realised he was talking about me! It was a wonderful surprise to be reunited after so long!” Sharon Earnshaw, General Manager at Headingley Hall said: “It’s great to see Len and Dennis sharing memories of their concert days. The project will collect oral history testimonies from Local LGBT+ people across West Yorkshire and LGBT+ relevant objects, such as badges banners and flyers. It will use these to create materials and activities, including films, artworks, resource packs and workshops. There will be multiple opportunities for the public to engage with the project through a website, at events, workshops and by accessing online learning resources. Ones to Watch at Sunny Bank Mills Sunny Bank Mills Gallery on Town Street in Farsley is hosting its fourth annual exhibition for emerging artists from Friday 2nd March – 15th April. ‘Ones to Watch’ showcases the work of artists from any discipline who are either from or studying in Yorkshire, and are up to one-year post graduation. Drawn from nearly 100 applications, this year will see 36 artists exhibit in the beautiful former cloth warehouse in Sunny Bank, in disciplines varying from fine art to sculpture to film.

“We love being able to support emerging artists in advancing their creative careers as they come to the end of their study”, said Jane Kay, Gallery Manager. “It also gives us an opportunity to showcase the talent in our regional colleges and universities.”

Previous exhibitors (there have been over 150) have, apart from being given the opportunity to exhibit in a professional environment, put on an amazing exhibitions, sold their work, used the opportunity to obtain other commissions and exhibitions, and networked with other creative practitioners.

Sunny Bank awards prizes for the best piece of work and a ‘visitors favourite’. Last year’s winner was Jake Mullins with his spectacular portrait of the Tiled Gallery in Leeds City Art Gallery. The exhibition preview night is Friday 2nd March. Entry is free.

Life&Style 2023 Six Year Cultural Programme is Unveiled Leeds has unveiled a £35m six-year programme, culminating in a year-long celebration of the city’s diverse cultures in 2023. The announcement on 31st January reiterated the city’s commitment to continuing the momentum created by the Leeds 2023 bid for European Capital of Culture, and will retain a strong international focus celebrating the city’s diverse communities. The Council will work with partners, including Arts Council England, to build a £35m fund for the programme, which will showcase Leeds as an outward looking, innovative city and will create opportunities that will be enjoyed across the whole city. Councillor Judith Blake, Leader of Leeds City Council, and Sharon Watson, Chair of the 2023 Independent Steering Group, revealed how the plans will move forward. Exciting projects include:

A major new sculpture project ‘Yorkshire Sculpture International’ in 2019 and 2023, featuring work by renowned international sculptors, public realm commissions and an engagement programme, delivered by Leeds Art Gallery, Henry Moore Institute, The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park – the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle;

The launch of the Leeds People’s Theatre, which will create a huge outdoor community performance in 2020 and 2023;

•

The Leeds Lighthouse, which has already secured a funding agreement with a local business. (See ‘They Lived in Leeds’ page 14 about John Smeaton who designed the famous Eddystone Lighthouse in 1756.) “It was a huge blow when Leeds was denied the chance to bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2023”, said Cllr Blake. “However, we are determined to see that the enthusiasm and energy that built up behind the bid not go to waste and to create a strong and meaningful legacy across the city. “The bid was a catalyst for a whole new cultural conversation which has sparked some incredibly original and inventive ideas from across our communities, artists, and businesses. “We want to keep that momentum going and this cultural programme will see many of the ideas submitted in the Leeds 2023 bid brought together and channeled into a new celebration of Leeds which will give the best of the city’s culture a chance to shine on a stage it deserves.”

To celebrate its twentieth anniversary, Leeds bar group North Bar is ramping up its charitable fundraising for St Gemma’s Hospice by launching a limited-edition session pale ale.

This year, St Gemma’s Hospice marks its Fortieth Anniversary and is inviting everyone to help them celebrate at ‘A Night to Remember’, a very special event at Leeds Town Hall on Wednesday 21st March starting at 7pm. The evening will include performances by the Leeds Symphony Orchestra and a brand new Hospice choir made up of staff and volunteers, who will be singing ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ and Bruno Mars’ ‘Count On Me’. There will also be an opportunity to find out more about the hospice’s history from people who were there when it opened. During the evening there will be a moment’s silence to remember all

loved ones who have been cared for by St Gemma’s and a spectacular cascade of petals will fall from the ceiling representing all the people who have been supported during the hospice’s 40 year history – accompanied by LSO’s rendition of Elgar’s wonderful ‘Nimrod’. ‘A Night to Remember’ is a chance for the Hospice to say ‘thank you’ to the people of Leeds, who have kept the Hospice going since 1978 and who have helped care for tens of thousands of patients. Since reaching this impressive anniversary, staff from all seven North Bar venues have been involved in fundraising activities and have raised over £9,000 for St Gemma’s – nearly halfway to their £20,000 goal. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford Dr Samuel Smiles (1812-1904) Surgeon, Journalist, Reformer, Writer One evening in 1844 a group of young Leeds workmen, members of a ‘mutual improvement’ society, gathered in a dingy rented room to hear a talk by the editor of the radical Leeds Times, Dr Samuel Smiles, a passionate advocate of working-class education. He illustrated his inspirational talk with stories of famous men who from humble beginnings had achieved success and distinction through their own efforts and determination. So the seed was sown for the book that was later to make him a household name: the immensely popular Self-Help, published in 1859, constantly reprinted and translated into languages across the world over the following half-century. Samuel Smiles was a Scot, born at Haddington near Edinburgh in 1812, one of eleven children of strict Calvinist parents. At fourteen he was apprenticed to the local doctor, and later gained qualifications in medicine and surgery at Edinburgh University. He returned home but found few patients, so focussed on writing articles for the press on the issues of social justice close to his heart. Journalism beckoned as a possible alternative career, and in 1838 he was offered the editorship of the reformist paper, the Leeds Times. He accepted, hoping to promote his ideals of a fairer society. He was to spend the next twenty years in Leeds, where he married and his five children were born – ‘about the happiest and most fruitful period of my life’. The 1840s in Leeds were years of political unrest and economic hardship. Smiles was a passionate supporter of reform, pushing for electoral change, the repeal of the Corn Laws, working class education and research into unemployment and poverty. He wrote numerous editorials, he gave lectures, he took a leading part in the Leeds Parliamentary Reform Association and was active in a grass-roots committee investigating unemployment. He believed

in reform through rational negotiation and was deeply opposed to the violence of the more extreme Chartists, but in time he began to feel frustrated and disillusioned by the failure of this consensual approach. In 1845 he resigned from the Leeds Times and active politics, but had to find work to support his growing family. After a brief return to medical practice, he was appointed Secretary to the newlyplanned Leeds and Thirsk Railway. It was no sinecure. Work began on the line to Harrogate in 1846, but met with desperate problems in constructing the long Bramhope Tunnel, bedevilled by constant flooding and subsidence. The cost in money and life was crippling – twenty-four men died building the tunnel (their memorial still stands in Otley churchyard) and the company was almost bankrupted. The line finally opened in 1849. Meanwhile Samuel Smiles and his family had moved from town to the more rural surroundings of Woodhouse Cliff. Alongside his stressful work, he continued to write and lecture. He campaigned for

a national education system and for public libraries, and found time to support local initiatives – he was the first president of the Woodhouse Mechanics Institution and taught at the Zion School at Wortley. But in 1854, when the Leeds and Thirsk Railway was absorbed into the Leeds Northern, he lost his job and moved away to London, to become Secretary of the South Eastern Railway company. Over the next years he filled his evenings and spare moments with writing. His first book was the Life of George Stevenson (1857), its success prompting his publishers to go ahead with Self Help which instantly became an international b e s t s e l l e r (t h e y h a d

previously rejected it!) This was followed by Lives of the Engineers (1862) and three further books expounding his social philosophy: Character (1871), Thrift (1875) and finally Duty (1887). The titles speak for themselves. The double pressure of writing and working affected his health; he retired in 1871, but lived on, still writing, until 1904. By then the popularity of Self-Help and the social vision it embodied was waning. Later critics condemned S m i l e s a s m o ra l i s i n g a n d patronising, promoting a myth of individual social mobility, but his work continues to attract comment and reinterpretation. The ideas discussed in the dingy room in Leeds in 1844 are not forgotten, and in their time provided his listeners with some encouragement and hope.

The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk Kneehigh Theatre and Bristol Old Vic are bringing ‘The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk’ to West Yorkshire Playhouse from 20th – 24th March.

Written by Daniel Jamieson and directed by Emma Rice, Marc Antolin, reprises his role as the artist Chagall, and Daisy Maywood is his wife Bella. They are the flying lovers of Vitebsk. Partners in life and on canvas, they are immortalised as the picture of romance. But whilst on canvas they flew, in life they walked through some of the most devastating times in history. This much anticipated revival traces the lives of the young couple as they navigate the pogroms, the Russian Revolution, and each other in a vigorous staging woven throughout with live Klezmer music from Ian Ross and James Gow, inspired by the Russian Jewish folk tradition.

Marc Chagall was a leading pioneer of modern art whose vibrant, original style evolved against one of the most tumultuous and terrifying periods in history. He and his young wife were swept up in the confusion and brutality of world wars, revolution, ethnic persecution and the murder and exile of millions. He responded with a radical, original visual style which was both mythic and dreamlike, fusing everyday settings inspired from his home town in Vitebsk in an extraordinary mystical lament, conveying love, loss, exile and the miracle of survival.

The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk opened to high acclaim at Bristol Old Vic and has enjoyed sold-out runs at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh, where it won the prestigious Carol Tambor, Best of Edinburgh Award, the highest honour at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

WildLines @ The Leeds Library is a threeday programme of talks, readings and Q&As curated by writer Richard Smyth, in partnership with the Leeds Library, Leeds Big Bookend and Leeds Inspired. Running from Thursday 15th March – Saturday 17th March, it will bring some of the UK’s leading writers and thinkers on nature to the Leeds Library, which celebrates its 250th anniversary this year. The Library’s collections of nature writing encompass everything from illustrated 17th-century herbals and the works of great Victorian naturalists, to the most exciting modernday chroniclers of nature and landscape. Nature On The Page: Wild Writing Then & Now (Thurs 15 March, 7.15 - 8.30pm) An expert panel of writers and naturalists will explore the process of writing about the natural world. Representing Gypsy Lives at The Brotherton A new exhibition at the University of Leeds explores visual, historical and fictional representations of the Gypsy and Traveller community.

Joins Leeds Guild of Singers Conductor and counter-tenor Joseph Judge recently joined the Leeds Guild of Singers as its new Musical Director and will be directing its next concert, ‘All Shall Be Well’ on Sunday 18th March at St Matthew’s Church, Chapel Allerton. This concert is in memory of WWI 100 and explores wider themes of human connection to conflict and loss, and the power of music.” Joe describes it as “Emotional words from times of distress surrounded by heavenly music”.

‘Rights and Romance: Representing Gypsy Lives’ is the latest exhibition at the University’s Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery.

In the 50th year of the controversial Caravan Sites Act, this exhibition examines the changing perspectives on, and representations of, the Gypsy and Traveller community by those outside it – alongside the stories and voices of the community itself.

The collection was gathered by Dorothy Una Ratcliffe, who is not a Gypsy woman, and her collection reflects an outsider’s admiration for Gypsy and Traveller culture.

Joe studied Music at the University of Manchester, while also working as Director of Music at Bury Parish Church. Stand-out moments in his career so far include: Conducting the Halle Choral Academy at the Bridgewater Hall; Touring to Malta, Shanghai and Hong Kong; Performing Bach at Snape Maltings; and directing the recording session for a PlayStation 4 advert.

“The fact that Dorothy Una Ratcliffe gave her collection to Leeds University in 1950, along with funds to increase the collection, means that this archive of Gypsy life is available for us to try to understand both positive and negative attitudes towards this community.”

Directing ensembles is one of the things he enjoys most. “Working with LGS is a brilliant opportunity to perform some great music with a talented and enthusiastic chamber choir”, he said. “The choir is full of gifted singers and they’ve certainly not been shy with their repertoire to date. I’ll enjoy developing an individual and expressive choral sound. In addition to continuing to develop the high standards for their regular a-cappella performances, I am keen to encourage larger musical projects, introduce lasting collaborations with other local musicians and ensembles.”

Five to Five were the winners and are now enjoying touring the country, with a great reception wherever they go. Written by Tim Firth, in conjunction with Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald, ‘The Band’ is all about what it’s like to grow up with a boy band. For five 16-year-old girls, in 1992 ‘The Band’ was everything. Twenty-five years on the women are reunited as they try once more to fulfill their dream of meeting their heroes.

While it was initially suggested that he join the production as a performer, Testament gravitated towards writing it– the first time he had written something that he was not performing. Inspired by the story of the walking group, his play is peopled by fictionalised versions of the group’s real counterparts, the types of men he could imagine joining such a group and the issues they might deal with as they walked and talked.

Walking, Talking and History! Eclipse Theatre's ‘Black Men Walking’, written by local writer and performer Andy Brooks (aka Testament) is touring nationally and has just been to West Yorkshire Playhouse. Based on a group of men in Sheffield who set up a walking group for exercise and conversation, a key theme is 'access', not just to a more humanitarian version of African history, but also access to the environment, here in Britain, which many can feel alienated from. One of the founders, Mark Hutchinson, contacted Heritage Corner's Joe Williams here in Leeds in 2016 and they shared their love of African connections to local history as they walked through the details of the Joe’s Leeds Black History Walk. Dawn Walton, Director of Sheffield-based Eclipse Theatre, took part in one of Mark's walks through the South Yorkshire countryside and it inspired her to build a play around the concept of black men walking. She approached Testament after hearing about his Blake Remixed project and attending his reworking of Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

While familiar with some black history, like the story of Septimius Severus – the black Roman emperor who made York the capital of Yorkshire – Testament threw himself into researching the rich history of black people in Britain, with particular focus on the Yorkshire region. “I was impressed with the sensitivity of the writing and the passion of the director”, said Joe Williams. “Testament's solo shows have been innovative and inspiring, there is a simple up-front honesty that challenges us to question the familiar. How he incorporates the importance of African history in Yorkshire is uplifting as it helps us to feel more a part of the county that many of us were born in.” As an adopted Yorkshire man himself, Testament identifies with the Yorkshire pride of the characters and likes to imagine them walking along the county’s Roman roads in the footsteps of their forebears. Out walking with the group he found himself in the company of sociable, intellectually curious characters whose wide-ranging conversation covered myriad topics, including politics, philosophy and race. While the show concentrates on group of black men, Testament considers the project to be about all of us. It’s a celebration of the complex, multicultural history of Britain. ‘Black Men Walking’ will now tour to Hull, Nottingham, Bristol, and Mold.

Leeds Black History Walk Returns Heritage Corner, run by Leeds writer/ actor Joe Williams, celebrates the African presence in Yorkshire through a variety of creative and public engagement projects - one of which is the Leeds Black History Walk (LBHW), which covers over 5,000 years of African civilisations, empires and contributions to our modern society, hidden in plain sight. The African presence in Yorkshire goes back 2,000 years to Roman occupation. Heritage Corner's LBHW starts its ninth season in April. “Whilst the walk is becoming more popular, so are the creative projects we do around the walk”, said Joe. “This year we are commemorating the 250th anniversary of British circus because a Victorian circus pioneer of African origin, Pablo Fanque, is buried right here in Leeds.” Heritage Corner also plans to contribute to the bi-centenary of abolitionist Frederick Douglass' birth, particularly

The excellent orator made popular speeches in Leeds in 1846 and 1859. 2018 is also the 70th anniversary of the arrival of Windrush, the symbol of mass migration from the Caribbean to Britain. Whilst the bitter-sweet stories of those pioneers, who came to help re-build the mother-country, are documented, shared and celebrated – the LBHW explains their ancestral contributions to Britain's development from the 17th century onwards.

New Charges at Household Waste Recycling Sites

Leeds City Council is planning to introduce charges at its household waste recycling sites for inert wastes (rubble, soil, etc), plasterboard and tyres. These came into effect on Monday 5th February 2018, and it is expected that they will generate savings of around £240,000 per year. These wastes are not classed as ‘household waste’ under the relevant legislation since they are more construction type wastes consisting of the fabric of a house rather than arising from the activities of a household. The Council therefore does not have to accept these wastes free of charge. Charging for these wastes on recycling sites has been adopted by many councils across the country. Sample charges include: • 25 litre bag or equivalent of soil/rubble – £2.60; • 25 litre bag or equivalent of plasterboard – £4.80; • One sheet of plasterboard up to 180cm x 90cm – £3; •

One tyre – £1.50;

Each single items – £2.60.

These prices are based on recovering the estimated operational, administrative and disposal costs associated with dealing with these waste streams.

The Rotary Club of Roundhay’s Magnificent Seventh! The North Leeds Charity Beer Festival celebrates its seventh year and returns to North Leeds Cricket Club, Old Park Road on 6th/7th April. Organised by the Rotary Club of Roundhay with the help of Sam Parker, a member of The British Guild of Beer Writers, the annual fundraising event is an established highlight in the Roundhay social calendar. To celebrate this milestone they will be dispensing 35 beers from seven small independent and micro-breweries, together with seven ciders. There will also be a new Gin Bar serving seven gins from small producers that you won’t find anywhere else. Plus there will be food to complement this fine selection of real ale, cider & gin.

On the entertainment front, the festival will once again showcase Leeds musical talent and there will be a full programme of music over the two days. A Concert for Candlelighters St Mary’s Youth Theatre in Garforth will stage a concert in aid of Candlelighters, the charity that supports children with cancer and their families, on Saturday 17th March, 2.30pm at The Great Hall, University of Leeds. The theatre group was established 25 years ago and to celebrate this anniversary they will be singing songs from every past production, including ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Rent’, ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘Disney’s Camp Rock’.

World Down syndrome Day is on 21st March. To mark the occasion the charity Sunshine & Smiles will be hosting a pop-up café, Cafe 21, at Carousel, 80 Otley Road, Far Headingley, LS6 4BA, from 18th – 25th March. This is a project the charity is very excited about. ‘”We’re working to improve employment and training opportunities for young adults with Down syndrome”, said Ailith Harley-Roberts, Service Manager. “Sunshine & Smiles will be running this shop and café in Headingley for the week around World Down Syndrome Day and training young people in food hygiene at the same time. So, not only will they help to run the event, it will benefit them in the long term too.” Sunshine & Smiles was founded in 2012 by a group of parents for their children with Down syndrome. It started by organising informal days out, including picnics and play days. These developed into regular fortnightly meetings at a local children’s centre. In 2013, the group received some funding and registered as a charity.

Sunshine & Smiles’ aim is to improve the lives and opportunities for children and young people with Down syndrome. There are five age groups and 12 speech and language therapy sessions every month. The charity also offers recreational activities in a supportive environment. On Saturday 17th March there will also be a screening of the film ‘My Feral Heart’ at Stainbeck Community Hall – the story of Luke, an independent young man with Down syndrome who stumbles upon a life changing friendship. And, there will be singing and signing sessions at local schools, to help people understand how communication can be made easier for children with the condition.

Many past members have gone on to study musical theatre or drama or have appeared professionally in musicals - one even appeared in the recent film of ‘Les Miserables’. The soloists for this concert include Jessica Northam, Sam Dorsman, Molly Bollinger and Joe Broadhead. The concert is a collaboration between Headingley Rotary Club, who is sponsoring the event, St Mary’s Youth Theatre, and the University of Leeds. It will be attended by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Jane Dowson, and all profits will go to Candlelighters, which is the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity. Over the years we have supported lots of community projects

Twenty nine people from property company Morgans recently spent a day volunteering at Leeds MENCAP’s Vinery Centre on Vinery Terrace and a residential home in Chapel Allerton. It’s the second year that the Morgans team, based in the city centre and Otley Road in Headingley, have lent MENCAP a helping hand. This year they painted the reception area and sensory room, cleaned all of the chairs, windows, ball pool and balls, jet washed the path and outside areas, and the heating system was reprogrammed to be more efficient.

“Over the years we have supported lots of community projects”, said Jonathan Morgan, “including refurbishing the St George’s Crypt shop on Armley Town Street, bag packing at supermarkets, and tidying up the Hollin Lane Allotments in Meanwood.

“As we have such a large team, we can really make a difference in just one day. Everyone worked hard and it was great to see the change we were able to make at Leeds MENCAP. I am a big believer in supporting local charities and helping those people in Leeds who really need it. By giving our team a specific volunteering day, we get a huge amount of buy-in. Everyone relished the opportunity to take part.” Leeds MENCAP provides services and activities to improve the lives and opportunities of children and adults with learning disabilities, along with their families and carers. Jonathan Morgan is a trustee of Leeds Community Foundation and founded the organisation’s 100 Club – a special patronage scheme for people who want to make a difference in Leeds.

Asylum Seekers Leeds Asylum Seekers’ Support Network (LASSN) is appealing for people with a spare room to help asylum seekers who have nowhere to stay. LASSN runs Grace Hosting which matches asylum seekers with people who can offer them a room.This Christmas 15 people, who would have been sleeping on the streets, were found hosts over the Christmas period and last year the charity found hosts for 90 asylum seekers who had nowhere to stay. Although the number of asylum seekers coming to Leeds has fallen, recently there has been a small increase in the number of people needing accommodation. “Many of the asylum seekers we help have fled desperate situations such as war and torture, or have been trafficked here against their will”, said Jon Beech, LASSN Director. “They then find themselves in a strange city and have no-one to turn to. The people we meet aren’t all young men in their 20s; they’re

pregnant mums and 70 year old grandads. Our volunteers show real human kindness by offering a spare room for them to stay either for a few nights, a weekend or if planned, even longer.” LASSN currently has nearly 50 Grace Hosts throughout the city. Many are retired people whose children have left home; others are young people who have a house with a spare room. All are offered training by the charity and are matched to asylum seekers who have a support worker. Theresa, a retired teacher, became a Grace Host two years ago and has had 15 asylum seekers staying with her at different times. “I just felt I had to do something. At first I was worried about a stranger coming into my home but the charity is very professional in the

way it arranges and matches the people. I always feel very supported. I’ve met some wonderful people and it has been so rewarding to see them get over the initial hurdles when they arrive in a new country and then make a new life for themselves.” Harpreet and his wife, Joti, were two of the people who stayed with Teresa. They fled religious persecution in Afghanistan and after a long and dangerous journey found themselves in Leeds. “We were desperate when we first arrived in Leeds and I feared we would be sleeping on the streets”, said Harpreet. “From the minute Teresa opened the door we felt safe and were able to start rebuilding our lives.” Leeds Asylum Seekers’ Support Network is appealing for more people to become Grace Hosts and offering free training and support to all volunteers. A huge ‘thank you’ to the many people who have copied me into their responses to the two consultations, on Clean Air and Housing Allocation, that I wrote about last month, it is very much appreciated. At the last Full Meeting of Leeds City Council, Cllr Buckley’s proposal to hold our own Leeds Year of Culture 2023 was approved - thereby not wasting the time, effort and money that had gone into preparing the city’s bid for European Capital of Culture. This followed the EU changing its position on the UK hosting Capital of Culture, and deciding, very late in the day, that in fact we could not.

The city is determined that its year of culture be a year that benefits the whole city. One of my jobs on council is on the Year of Culture Steering Group, whose job it is to ensure it is a superb year for all of Leeds and represents good value for money. What do you think should be the focus for Leeds? How do we ensure that there truly is something for everyone? I would welcome your thoughts. Looking ahead to later this year, there are two weekend events that may have some impact upon those travelling around the city. On Sunday 6th May, the Tour de Yorkshire returns, running from Halifax into Leeds City Centre. The nearest it comes to Alwoodley is when it passes down Arthington Road and Eccup Lane as it joins Otley Road and into the centre via Kirkstall. Home Garden Slightly larger than a Chaffinch, the Yellowhammer is a distinctive small bird of farmland and open country. In Spring, the male has a bright yellow head and breast, and a streaky rich brown back, whilst the female’s plumage is much duller with less yellow. In Winter it forms small flocks with other buntings, finches and sparrows, and visits larger fields, especially stubble fields and fields with winter fodder crops. In Spring it supplements its seed diet with insects and other invertebrates, and chooses arable fields and grassland with hedges and banks in which to breed. It usually nests on the ground, using grass, plant stems and moss to build the nest, and lining it with soft material, such as fine grass.

It is in Spring that the Yellowhammer’s famous song can be heard, supposedly sounding like “a little bit of bread and no cheese”! This does at least duplicate the pace of the song, which consists of a rapid succession of fast notes, followed by a long drawn-out wheeze. The male will perch on the top of hedgerows and repeat this song all day long.

Like all farmland birds, the Yellowhammer population has declined markedly in number, falling by 50% since 1970. Possible causes include fewer stubble fields in Winter due to Autumn sowing, use of herbicides, and loss of wide field margins.

This is the month where nature seems to speed up and suddenly there are loads of gardening jobs to be done.

Shrubs to Prune Now

March is the big seed sowing month, but it may still be cold outside and seeds need to be kept in a warm, bright environment once planted, and not allowed to dry out. A propagator can really help to provide the right conditions for germination. This is usually a shallow tray to hold compost with a transparent lid to keep in warmth and moisture. More expensive versions are electrically heated from underneath which is a real bonus if your windowsill is in a cool or draughty place. Prices range from just a couple of pounds for the simplest lidded plastic tray to about £25 for a heated version.

There are quite a few popular varieties of shrubs that should be pruned in early Spring – they are the ones that flower in late Summer. They flower on the new wood so pruning now will promote plenty of new growth and blooms later in the season. Examples include Buddleija, hardy Fuchsia, Hebe, Hydrangea and late flowering Ceanothus.

Enjoy the Beauty of Bulbs There is nothing to compare with the drama and colour of bulbs in Spring. A garden visit this month can really inspire your bulb choices for next year. Look out for Narcissi, Muscari and early flowering Tulips bringing splashes of bright colour and in some cases, fragrance too. There are also gorgeous bulbs to plant now that will bring colour later in the year. Try Calla lilies (or Zantedeschia) for their elegant, simple flowers in a range of fascinating colours – from flame orange through to cream or deepest purple – and for their striking spotted foliage. They make excellent subjects for patio containers. Oriental Lilies bring dramatic perfume and colour to pots and borders and others such as Crocosmia and subtle white Galtonia candicans are well worth including in your planting schemes.

PHANTOM THREAD DIRECTED BY: PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON STARRING: DANIEL DAY-LEWIS, VICKY KRIEPS, LESLEY MANVILLE CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 130 MINS Throughout his career as a filmmaker, Paul Thomas Anderson has proved himself to be a fascinating and unpredictable auteur and his latest work bears the distinctive quality and assured touch he has become known for. Phantom Thread reunites Anderson with Daniel Day-Lewis who has announced that this will be his final film before he retires from acting. It’s a fitting swansong for one of the finest actors of his generation who has never been less than an utterly mesmerizing presence on screen. The film is an elegant, subdued and intensely focused character study centered around Day-Lewis’ Reynolds Woodcock, designer and dressmaker to royalty, celebrities and the monied elite in 50’s London. Reynolds’ sartorial creations are widely admired and much in demand and he presides over the esteemed House of Woodcock

with the help of his shrewd, no-nonsense sister, Cyril (brilliantly played by Lesley Manville). While en route to his country house workshop, Reynolds finds himself charmed by a waitress, Alma (Vicky Krieps) as she serves him breakfast. He considers her to possess the perfect figure to showcase his designs and feels a compulsion to dress her beautifully. She in turn is also drawn to this distinguished and enigmatic figure and the two quickly strike up a relationship as Alma becomes Reynolds’ muse and lover (of sorts). To call Phantom Thread a love story might seem to be something of a stretch. Throughout much of the film we watch Alma struggling to forge a loving relationship with an intensely difficult and complicated man. Handsome and dashing, Reynolds is courteous if not exactly kind, gentle while not quite warm, generally mild mannered but with a slow burning temper if his particular way of things is at all disrupted. It’s these personal foibles and traits of Reynolds’ that define him and inform his approach to relationships. It’s his intense attention to detail, his preoccupation with elegance and beauty and his pursuit of a quality of perfection that have made him a master of his craft but which stymie his capacity for genuine intimacy. Above all, the film deals with the dynamics of control and raises the point that the relationship between artist and muse is not necessarily a romantic one. It’s often more to do with inspiration, possession, manipulation and this is where the tension arises, as Alma is too much her own person with her own motivations and desires to submit fully to Reynolds’ fastidious whims and rigid, regimented habits. If it is any kind of a romance it seems like a doomed one, until Alma comes to realise her own ability to exert power and control over Reynolds. As befits its subject Phantom Thread has a stately, refined quality with studied poise and a considered sense of

stillness. As Alma says to Reynolds at one point, “whatever you’re going to do, do it carefully”. Considering the character she’s speaking to and the actor playing him, such a statement seems redundant but it’s advice that Anderson himself seems to have heeded. As it’s a film whose central character is so concerned with style (but has nothing but disdain for the notion of ‘chic’) there is an exacting deliberateness to the direction, as in the performances.

Daniel Day-Lewis completely disappears into the role of Reynolds with an astutely meticulous performance; conveying a sense of character through the tiniest gestures, tone of voice and closely observed mannerisms. Relative newcomer Vicky Krieps as Alma distinguishes herself as much more than a mere foil to Day-Lewis’ Reynolds and confidently holds her own opposite a rightfully revered thespian titan. She delivers a portrayal of striking subtlety and sensitivity and in some respects is the true heart of the film.

Locally Shot Feature Film Hits Cinemas This Month Shot in Horsforth, Headingley and Roundhay, feature film ‘Scott and Sid’ makes its way into cinemas nationwide this March. Having never written, produced or directed a film before, Scott Elliott and Sid Sadowskyj’s story is an inspirational, true, coming of age tale about two unlikely school friends from Yorkshire who refuse to give up on their dreams. Never letting themselves succumb to an ordinary path through life, Bradford-born Scott and Sid navigated the distance from dream to reality, and raised £1 million to fund their debut film. The film offers an insight into the pair’s dream-chaser philosophy and inspires their audience to be more than ordinary. Chasing their dreams comes at a cost, but one meeting could change their lives. “Having wanted to make a film since we were teenagers, the fact that we are now releasing a story based on our lives is incredible”, said Scott. “To film in the region we grew up in was an honour.”

Filmed across several locations in Yorkshire, the duo made use of the impressive scenery in and around Leeds, York and Bradford. “Filming in these beautiful Yorkshire cities was truly incredible. The Yorkshire College of Music and Drama (YCMD) is a hive of musical activity. Scholarship Success for Taqwa

Classics at Allerton Grange Allerton Grange School has just introduced Classical Civilisation for GCSE and A level students. Believed to be the only state funded school in Leeds to offer Classics, it offers new opportunities for students who have a passion for history. Classics is the study of Ancient Greece and Rome, covering their literature, history, philosophy and visual arts, and giving an insight into their social, cultural and political values. Last October, a school in Sheffield hit the headlines after resorting to crowdfunding to prevent Classics from being cut from the curriculum. The idea behind the social media campaign was to ensure that these subjects do not become the preserve of the private sector.

The new course will be offered to Allerton Grange students from September 2018. History teacher, Gemma Williams, successfully lobbied senior leaders to introduce the course. After forging links with local universities, sourcing external funding, and putting forward a convincing business case, the school was pleased to launch this new course, which is in line with its vision of raising the aspirations of its students. “It’s rarely heard of for students who attend state funded education to study classics”, said Gemma Williams, who has a degree in Classical Studies. “When it comes to future opportunities, such as university and employment, having a GCSE or A Level in classics really does impress.”

Taqwa Elforjani, a Year 11 student at Allerton Grange School, recently received an award through a new scholarship programme. The STEM Skills Fund aims to increase the number of girls who continue to study maths and physics beyond GCSE. Girls are very underrepresented in these areas at A Level – even those achieving top grades in these subjects are 15% less likely to study maths and 20% less likely to study physics at A Level than boys. Taqwa is on track to achieve a Grade 7 in maths and Grade 8 in physics at GCSE this Summer. The Maths and Physics Girls’ Scholarship means that she will receives a bursary of £30 a week during term time to support her study for the next academic year. “We are extremely proud of Taqwa for being selected for this award and we look forward to seeing her achievements at GCSE and A Level”, said Mike Roper, Headteacher. “It is important that all our students have the opportunities to succeed. This new scholarship is a superb pathway to encourage girls into STEM subjects, where they have previously been underrepresented.”

Younger Life GSAL Junior Pupils Raise Over £7,000 for NSPCC Following a recent ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ Assembly, Junior pupils at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) raised a staggering £7,247 through a sponsored spelling championship. “The pupils learned a lot from the Speak Out Stay Safe assembly and wanted to help other children to benefit from this important NSPCC project”, said Tom Weaver, Assistant Head of GSAL Junior School. “The spelling competition was a fun and educational way to raise funds – the children rose to the challenge enthusiastically, finding sponsors and improving their spelling along the way.”

In the Leeds area, in the 2016/17 school year, NSPCC volunteers spoke to 24,316 children and visited 88 primary schools to deliver their Schools Service programme, teaching children how to keep themselves safe from abuse and neglect. The assembly helps children to identify a trusted adult they can speak to if they are ever worried about themselves or a friend along with information about Childline. Teachers Tread the Boards in Tribute to Former Pupil

Head of Geography, Simon Knowles, wrote, directed and starred in this up-to-date version of the traditional tale, which had plenty of topical references, including the ‘giant’ in the form of Donald Trump! The foundation was set up by Robert following his diagnosis of Motor Neurone disease in 2015. He died in December 2016, aged 34, and the charity is now being run by his family as a lasting legacy to him. It aims to help with money worries as well as provide grants for specialist equipment and for some much needed respite.

A staff pantomime at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has raised £5,000 for the Robert Sinclair Davidson Foundation, a charity set up by alumnus Robert to support families affected by life threatening and terminal illnesses.

‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ played to full houses over three nights, featuring memorable performances from staff members, ably supported by students in the band, the technical team, and as Buttercup the cow.

Lord Mayor Presents Rotary Club Young Citizen Awards Leeds Rotary Club Young Citizen Awards were recently presented to 24 young people – all of whom were shining examples of what young people are doing for their families, schools, and communities. The range of activities in which they were involved was amazing. Kyle Sadler helped Garforth Academy raise £600 for Martin House and St Gemmas; Kelly Subham (Leeds West Academy) collected for Guide Dogs for the Blind; Denise Benneeh, Imani Wilson and Phebe Wilson Andoh organised several events at Abbey Grange Academy; and Emmie Barker (Leeds West Academy) raised over £6,000 for her brother’s charity Will’s Way, which focuses on helping families who face a teenage brain tumour diagnosis. Elliott Carroll sold poppies at Leeds City College and organised an event for NeST (Nephrotic Syndrome Trust). Anny Kelly (Temple Moor High School) raised £1,000 for a four year old with Nuroblastoma by performing his own songs. Fatemeh Nosratzedah, an Iranian refugee at Leeds West Academy is coping with complex disabilities from Cerebral Palsy, but still achieved 11 GCSEs at A* to D

grades. She is helping others new to the country as a translator and plans to launch her own charity to help young people with disabilties gain life skills and become independent. Jahdeya Daniel-Ried (Leeds West Academy) and Harry White (Allerton High School) were recognised as learning supporters and mentors; Hannah and Leene Matheroo (Gateways School) are peer mentors and have organised events for Black History month. Nathan Chaplow and Ethan Wright (Horsforth School) played a major role in the school’s World War 1 celebrations. Ione Collings (Co-op Priesthorpe School) helps staff and works with Roxy from Ruby AM, and Faique Bhatti has developed a prayer room in the school. Charlie McHale (Leeds East Academy) continued achieveing whilst dealing with her mother’s death from cancer; Ashleigh Corcoran, (Leeds East Academy) also built on her achievements whilst dealing with difficult circumstances; and Bradley McHale (Leeds West Academy) is carer for his mother and brother. Outside school George Clay and Declan Heaton work with West Yorkshire Police and are helping with the new intake of cadets. Jahdeya creates costumes for Leeds Carnival. Faique coaches young children with additional needs. Charlotte Walker and Caitlin Barran (St Joseph’s Youth Support) help with the Church’s soup kitchen, Summer and Christmas fairs.
