Magazine Editor Wins Top Media Award!

Dawn-Maria France, the Editorin-Chief of the successful online magazine, Yorkshire Women’s Life, was recently presented with the top media prize at The English Women’s (North) Awards.

I feel so proud to Having merged with Charms Bathrooms of Harrogate last year, More Bathrooms, part of the Passmore Group, decided to completely redesign their newly acquired showroom, bringing it into line with its brand ethos and full-service design and installation offering. The large Bathroom Showroom also features two exclusive product ranges – Laufen Kartell and Roca Inspira. More Bathrooms are now among just a few handpicked dealers in the region to display and install Laufen Kartell – the high-end, durable Swiss range that is world renowned for its customer focused design, quality and functionality. The Harrogate location is also the only bathroom showroom in the Yorkshire region to design and install the Roca Inspira range, from the largest sanitaryware manufacturer in the world, which uses multiple shape and fixture combinations to deliver numerous

possibilities – like the innovative W + W, a state-of-the-art product that combines a basin and toilet in one single piece. “We’re well known for our installation expertise, something that we’ve worked tirelessly to achieve over the past 50 years”, said Tony Passmore, Managing Director. “The acquisition of Charms, and exclusive product rights that came with it, allow us to offer some of the best designed, quality products in Europe, which has enhanced both our offering and design capabilities.” The Harrogate Bathroom Showroom is at Unit 1&2 Beech Avenue Business Park, Beech Avenue, Harrogate, HG2 8DS Telephone: 01423 870111 Open: Tuesday-Friday 9-4 and Saturday 9-5. www.more-bathrooms.co.uk

The English Women’s Awards acknowledge the achievements of women, including female entrepreneurs, charity founders, female trailblazers, and successful female leaders. “I feel so proud to have received this award for service to the media, including journalism”, said Dawn-Marie. “It’s brilliant to be acknowledged by my peers, and so good to have an award ceremony such as The English Women’s Award’s North which supports the female leadership pipeline.”

Celebrating Chippendale: Otley’s Famous Son Otley, home to England’s most famous furniture maker Thomas Chippendale, will celebrate his tercentenary with a month-long festival in June. The festivities include a birthday party in what could have been his school; a concert of 18th-century music in All Saints Parish Church where he was baptized; talks by Chippendale Society, and an Antiques Roadshow-style event. Otley is also producing a celebratory Chippend’Ale in conjunction with Otley micro-brewer Paul Briscoe and Harrogate’s Daleside Brewery; planting a riverside Chippendale-inspired flower bed in Wharfemeadows Park; and launching a walking tour of the town. Town poet Matthew Hedley Stoppard has also been busy, producing a Chippendaleinspired poem ‘Thomas Carved Our Town’.

Chippendale, often called the country’s first interior designer thanks to his 1754 work ‘The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director’, was born in Otley in June 1718. While his fame came after leaving Otley for London in his early 20s, it is thought that he learnt many of his skills working alongside his father, joiner John Chippendale. The pair worked together on Farnley Hall, a stately home outside Otley, and Harewood House. “While Otley may not have a large selection of furniture for visitors to see, the town shaped his early life and retains a unique place in his history”, said Lawrence Ross of Visit Otley. “We have created a programme that we hope will inform people of his life here and elsewhere, as well as providing a fun element through celebrations such as the birthday party and events for the younger generation.” For full details, visit visitotley.co.uk, otleytowncouncil.gov.uk and www.the chipendalesociety.co.uk.

Life&Style Leeds Civic Trust Supper Walks See Leeds City Centre in a new light with walks led by experienced and knowledgeable guides. The walks are about 90 minutes long and are preceded by supper at 6pm in the Trust’s headquarters on the Calls. This year’s programme includes: Georgian Leeds (1 May) The street plan of Leeds city centre dates from Georgian times. The walk takes in important Georgian buildings, roads and yards, providing a reminder of how important this period was in the city’s development.

Victorian and Edwardian Leeds (10 May) After Queen Victoria opened Leeds Town Hall in 1858, slums were cleared and roads widened, replaced by The Corn Exchange, Kirkgate Market, the arcades and City Square; all Victorian features that define Leeds City Centre. Mabgate: Then and Now (16 May) (Starting from East Street Arts) This fascinating, often overlooked part of Leeds has its own distinctive identity and an interesting history. The walk takes in the site of St Mary’s Church and the cholera graveyard, the route of Mabgate Beck and its role in Leeds’ industrial expansion and reflects on Mabgate’s current uses and its future.

Waterfront East (7 June) Beginning at The Calls and taking as its spine the Aire & Calder Navigation, this walk tells the story of this important shipping intersection and the historical importance of Hunslet and its surroundings as a focus for trade and business. Today the area is home to five educational establishments, a growing residential area, proposed location of a new city centre park, and a focus for the digital economy – the largest outside of London. A fascinating area that has continued to innovate over the centuries.

Waterfront West (12 June) Staying close to the river and canal basin, finishing in Holbeck, this walk shows how this area has had a vital role in shaping the city over the last 200 years, and how future developments will radically alter this part of Leeds once again. It is the location of the first moving image and the cradle of the industrial revolution but also the home of an Egyptian Temple and Italian towers. To book a walk (£15 including supper with wine or beer), please visit www. leedscivictrust.org.uk/events or call 0113 2439594 (Mon – Fri 10am – 3pm)

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

James Garth Marshall (1802-1873) Industrialist, politician, reformer, landowner What connects the crumbling magnificence of the Egyptian-style Temple Mills in urban Holbeck with the glorious landscape of Tarn Hows, one of the most visited beauty spots in the Lake District? The link is James Garth Marshall, who used part of the massive wealth generated by the Marshall flax business in Leeds to fund spectacular improvements to his fine country estate at Coniston. A secondgeneration millionaire, a ‘millocrat’ accused of exploiting his workers, he was nevertheless a thoughtful man with a social conscience, committed to political reform and in touch with the important men of ideas of his day. He was the third son of entrepreneur John Marshall who had amassed a huge fortune using new factory methods to spin flax, cashing in on the booming wartime demand for cloth. His great mills at Holbeck employed over a thousand people, mainly women and children, working 12-hour days for a few shillings a week. James followed his elder brother into the business at eighteen, after a private education in Edinburgh. He was to become a leading figure in the firm, responsible for significant improvements in machinery and working practices. When a new larger mill was required it was he who recommended the unique single-storey plan finally adopted, with its vast two-acre space, its innovative ventilation and lighting system – and famously sheep grazing on the roof! Temple Mill opened in 1840 and was a wonder of its age. Concerned about the conditions of the poor, he believed that extending the vote would lead to improvement. In 1841 he helped to found the Leeds Parliamentary Reform Association and offered Temple Mill for a mass meeting. Some 7,000 supporters crowded into the vast space, under a huge banner claiming ‘Justice for each and all’ in flaring gas-lit letters. But talk did not satisfy the activists. Just a year later James had to fight off a terrifying attack on the mill by Chartist rioters who tried to shut down the boiler and halt production. He hated the

violence, but remained dedicated to extending the vote, including to women. His novel ideas on proportional representation won approval from his friend, the philosopher/economist John Stuart Mill.

Pictured: James Garth Marshall, his wife & daughter (right)

Like his father James saw education as the key to progress. He supported the mill schools and founded a new school himself in Holbeck, with a library – essential he said ‘for giving an early taste for reading and acquiring useful knowledge’. He helped to found a Mutual Improvement Society in Headingley, where he also gave land for allotments for the poor. On the national level he was a strong advocate of the state provision of education rather than the voluntary system that was current at the time. This issue bitterly divided the Liberal party. In 1847 he agreed to stand as MP for Leeds on this platform, following in the footsteps of his father and brothers. But he was basically a shy man and a poor public speaker; he retired in 1852, though he continued to take an interest in politics in support of his beliefs. James divided his time between the family mansion of Headingley House, on the fringe of Beckett Park (demolished c 1910), his London home, and the Lake District where his father and brothers had bought estates,

at Monk Coniston, with Alfred Lord Tennyson & his son Hallam: photo taken 1857 by Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll).

When a new larger mill was required it was he who recommended the unique single-storey plan finally adopted, with its vast twoacre space, its innovative ventilation and lighting system

well away from smoking mill chimneys. In 1836, on advice from the Wordsworths, James bought an estate at Monk Coniston which he later extended and improved, joining three small tarns into one spectacular lake: Tarn Hows. This was to become his favoured home after his marriage in 1841. His younger brother had married well – the daughter of Lord Monteagle, Chancellor of the Exchequer – and James married another daughter, Mary Alice Spring-Rice, in what the papers called a ‘High Life’ wedding in London. The two families were to become even more entangled through further marriages. The Marshalls were moving now in high society. By the 1850s James was senior partner in the business in Leeds alongside his younger brother Henry, but the two frequently fell out over business decisions. As

competition from cotton increased, profits fell away, but by then the family wealth and social status were assured. James now spent more time in the Lakes where he could pursue his life-long interest in geology, and travelled abroad with his wife and four children. They enjoyed a padded life, entertaining eminent friends like Thomas Carlyle, Adam Sedgewick, Alfred Tennyson, John Ruskin. When James died in 1873 he was buried at Coniston where his estate is now owned by the National Trust and enjoyed by thousands of visitors. In Leeds the business struggled on until it finally closed in 1886. Over recent years the once magnificent Temple Mills have lain derelict, reportedly sold recently for just £1, their future in question.

Live Art Bistro and The Playhouse Present Two New Shows

ABA Wins International NGO Leadership Award The Leeds Association of Blind Asians (ABA) recently won a NGO Leadership Award at the seventh World CSR Conference in Mumbai, IndiaABA was recognised for its dedicated service to South Asian Communities with visual impairment outside India. The conference focused on strategies for the success of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and provided a global platform for charities and businesses to work together. “I am delighted that ABA has been awarded and recognized globally”, said Dr Leena Inamdar, ABA Chairperson. “Despite being a small local charity in Leeds, ABA has served the South Asian community with visual impairment to lead independent lives and improve their quality of life. The award acknowledges the high-quality work by our staff and supporters who truly deserve this award for their service to this community over the years.”

West Yorkshire Playhouse is partnering with Live Art Bistro to present two shows at LAB’s venue on Regent Street – Mind The Gap’s ‘Mia: Daughters of Fortune’ on 27th/28th April; and Sh!t Theatre’s ‘DollyWould’ on 11th/12th May. LAB is an artist-led venue and curatorial team based in Leeds. Over the last six years, it has developed an international reputation as an independent creative hub offering opportunities for a broad spectrum of artists. “We’re delighted to be partnering with Live Art Bistro to present two of this year’s most exciting and entertaining pieces of new work”, said Gilly Roche, West Yorkshire Playhouse’s New Work Producer. “Internationally renowned for its adventurous programming and generous support of artists, LAB is a perfect host for these two boundarypushing productions.”

A fast moving, eye-opening production that challenges perceptions of learning disability and parenthood in today’s society, ‘Mia: Daughters of Fortune’, created and directed by Joyce Nga Yu Lee, is presented by Bradford’s learningdisability theatre company Mind the Gap. Sh!t Theatre’s ‘DollyWould’ is a bold new show about country legend Dolly Parton, cloning, branding, immortality and death. Filled with musical interludes, daft outfits and sharp comedy, it is a riotously rude exploration of authenticity and fake-ness. Tickets are available from 0113 213 7700 or online at wyp.org.uk

ABA helps visually impaired South Asian people in Leeds to improve their lives and make them independent. The blind and partially sighted South Asian community has various cultural and religious needs which act as barriers to inclusion in society. ABA provides advocacy and home visits, and runs weekly social groups to cater to specific needs of the community. “The South Asian community is more likely to develop sight loss than any other community in the UK”, said Mrs Debbani Ghosh, Manager. “As demographics are changing we are continuously trying to increase our reach and CSR is a major avenue to sustaining funding.” For further information, contact 0113 210 3347, debbanig@abaleeds.org.uk visit www.ABAleeds.co.uk

Leeds’ Biggest Ever Sculpture Exhibition

The biggest display of the Leeds Sculpture Collection, featuring 200 works, recently opened across 14 spaces at Henry Moore Institute (HMI) and Leeds Art Gallery. This free exhibition celebrates the two institutions’ longstanding partnership and marks the HMI’s 25th anniversary. Combining everything from abstract 1.8m tall sculptures to tiny models and works on paper, it’s the most important collection of British sculpture outside London and one of the strongest in Europe.

“This is a special moment for sculpture in Leeds”, said Godfrey Worsdale, Director of the Henry Moore Foundation. “Along with Leeds Art Gallery we are proud to care for one of the best collections of sculpture in the world. To be able to share this as one exhibition across our two venues is extremely exciting. The latest acquisition by Anne Hardy is yet another wonderful example of Leeds’ ambitious commitment to making the city and the region a global force in the field of sculpture.”

The largest piece, ‘Kiss’, standing at 1.8m high is exhibited for the first time in Leeds, along with the collection’s most recent acquisition ‘Falling and Walking’ by Anne Hardy, whose work fills an entire room, offering an immersive, multi-sensory experience. The works range from 1720 to the present day and feature a myriad of different techniques and materials.

“We’ve been working towards this moment for some time now “, said Sarah Brown, Keeper of Leeds Art Gallery. “It will enchant art lovers and newcomers alike. We hope people who’ve never visited a gallery before will come and see what their city’s collection has to offer.” The Sculpture Collections runs across Henry Moore Institute and Leeds Art Gallery until 2nd September. Arts&Culture The Vote Before The Vote

An Exhibition about the Leeds Victorian Women who made the Suffragettes possible Leeds Libraries are celebrating the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, which first gave the Parliamentary vote to women, with a major exhibition dedicated to the Victorian women of Leeds who laid the foundations for the Suffragette Movement. ‘The Vote Before The Vote’, runs from 3rd – 30th May in Room 700 at Leeds Central Library. The first petition to Parliament was presented by Mary Smith, who lived in Headingley, in 1832 and it was laughed out of the House of Commons. ‘The Vote Before The Vote’ presents the Leeds figures in the 19th century Suffragist movement, names that have been largely forgotten, but who deserve to be remembered: women like Catherine Buckton, Isabella Ford, Alice Cliff Scatcherd, Constance Holland, and Mary Gawthorpe. It catalogues their struggles in the long march towards the vote, and their successes along the way.

And there certainly were successes. Catherine Buckton was the first woman elected to the Leeds School Board in 1873, while others helped women organise, both in unions and politically. Some, like Mary Gawthorpe, straddled the era between Suffragists and Suffragettes. A change in the law in 1894 meant that all ratepayers were able to vote in some local elections, and women could run to be Parish Councillors and Poor Law Guardians. For the very first time in English politics, the working class – especially working class women – had a political voice.

Curated by Leeds suffrage historian Vine Pemberton Joss, ‘The Vote Before The Vote’ highlights an area of local history that’s been ignored for far too long. People should know about these pioneering women who believed in an idea and worked to achieve it when the thought of women voting was widely ridiculed. What they achieved was remarkable, and without them, the Suffragettes – who largely dismissed those who’d paved the way for them – would have had a much harder battle. The exhibition will also feature workshops, including one for children on what life was like in the Victorian workhouse. For further information, call 0113 378 5005 or visit whatson.leeds. gov.uk

Arts&Culture World Première of Girl on the Train Comes to The Playhouse The world première of the play ‘The Girl on the Train’ is coming to West Yorkshire Playhouse from 12th May – 9th June. This brand new stage version of Paula Hawkins’s gripping novel, adapted by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel, is directed by Old Vic Associate Director Joe Murphy and produced by West Yorkshire Playhouse in association with Simon Friend. Jill Halfpenny, known for leading roles in Coronation Street, EastEnders, and Kay Mellor’s ‘In the Club’, as well as musicals ‘Calendar Girls’, ‘Chicago’, and ‘Legally Blonde’ in the West End, will take the lead role of Rachel Watson, the disillusioned commuter who finds herself as a suspect in an extraordinary mystery. Rachel longs for a different life. Her only escape is watching ‘the perfect couple’ through the train window every day, happy and in love. When she learns that the woman has suddenly disappeared, she finds herself as a witness and even a suspect in a mystery that she could never have anticipated. “It is a thrill to be bringing such a loved book to the stage”, said Joe Murphy. “We have assembled a fantastic creative team and an incredible cast. Our version allows us to explore the character of Rachel, seeing the whole story from her point of view, and having Jill Halfpenny taking on the role ensures an exhilarating night for audiences.” “This new stage adaptation is not only a real dissection of character, which Joe is so skilled at, it’s also a thrilling piece of drama that delights and surprises”,

Having Jill Halfpenny taking on the role ensures an exhilarating night said James Brining, the Playhouse’s artistic director. “The play brilliantly combines murder mystery with an in-depth character study of Rachel”, said Joe. “She is a great female protagonist. Whereas the film concentrated more on the mystery, the book is more interested in character - and the stage allows more character development. “In this excellent adaptation, everyone is complex. Everyone is hiding something. There is always something to uncover and you are constantly changing your mind about them. I have a weakness for 1990’s thriller movies and it feels like doing one of these on stage! There is real theatricality about it, presented so well by Lily (Lily Arnold, Designer) and making it very exciting.” Adam Best takes the role of Rachel’s ex-husband Tom, Sarah Ovens plays Anna, Tom’s new wife, Florence Hall is Megan Hipwell, and Theo Ogundipe plays Scott Hipwell. Colin Tierney and Jonas Khan complete the cast as DI Gaskill and Kamal Abdic.

Food&Drink Brewers Market Beer Festival Returns to Canal Mills Brewers Market Beer Festival returns to Canal Mills for its fourth year from 11th – 12th May, coinciding with Leeds Indie Food Festival. Showcasing the very best of local and international craft beer over the course of two days and three sessions, this year will be their biggest showing yet. Canal Mills’ outdoor space will allow for even more craft beer and street food, as well as a pop-up gin bar, a selection of natural wines from Wayward Wines, and DJs. Joining them over the weekend will be a hefty bunch of brewery partners including: Verdant,

Kirkstall, Northern Monk, Thornbridge, Vocation, Black Lodge, Zapato, Track, Buxton, and the Tall Boys bottle shop. And, in the food department you’ll find the likes of Mussel Pot, Little Bao Boy, Rabbit Hole Coffee, Sandos, MorMor and Little Red Food Truck. “This year we’ve moved from our traditional November slot to the Summer”, said Matt Long, Events Manager at Canal Mills, “which will give us the chance to use more of Canal Mills and bring in more breweries than ever before! We’ll also have a wider selection of food and extras.”

Eat North Returns! Eat North returns to North Brewing Company, Taverners’ Walk Industrial Estate, Sheepscar Grove, LS7 1AH for 18 weeks from 28th April. Food&Drink Voujon – The New, Stylish Indian on the Block You could easily drive by it, but keep your eyes peeled because just opposite the BP petrol station and St Chad’s Parish Centre on Otley Road in Far Headingley is a treat that you really don’t want to miss out on. Voujon recently took over the ground floor of the Ascot Grange Hotel and transformed it into a relaxed, stylish restaurant. And, set back slightly from the road, there’s even plenty of parking, which is at a premium around Headingley.

Our other starter was a Mix Kebab – chicken and lamb marinated in yogurt with garam masala, garlic, ginger, cumin, cayenne pepper, and cooked in a tandoor oven, and served with a minced lamb sheek kebab. Then it was straight on to a beautiful Balti Fish Curry with Halibut steak in a Balti style sauce with fresh tomatoes and onions, garlic, coriander, turmeric, ginger and chilli. And, Taftoon Chicken – marinated chicken with garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, and naga chilli which has a very distinctive scent and taste. Apparently the naga chilli is the hottest chilli in the world! We were warned, but it still went down a treat! Pictured: Co-owners Abdul & Syd.

Owner Syd Miah is delighted to finally be open after extensive renovations and is looking forward to Voujon becoming a favourite eatery in the area and welcoming individuals, groups and families. The tables sparkle with white tablecloths and napkins, with place settings all stylishly branded with the Voujon logo. The service is impeccable and so friendly, helpful and welcoming. I should add patient to that as my decision-making faculties were severely tested! I was very happy to go with Syd’s recommendations and I didn’t regret it. I started with Goan Crab Puree – white crab meat cooked with Chaat Masala spices which are tangy and slightly hot but didn’t overpower the crab, served with a puree bread.

I’m afraid we passed on dessert after all of this wonderfully tasty food, but saw that there was a wide selection of sorbets and ices. If you fancy traditional Indian desserts like Jalebi or Ras Malai just let them know a couple of days ahead of time and they will make them up specially. Voujon has a really good selection of reasonably priced wines too. In fact, all the food is very reasonably priced too – around £4 for starters and from around £8 - £15 for mains. Of course, the restaurant also does takeaway meals. Voujon is a welcome addition to the Headingley dining offering and is definitely likely to fulfil Syd’s wish of becoming a favourite neighbourhood restaurant.

As well as regular cafe days, Rainbow Junktion has planned a series of exciting evening events. A couple of times a month, Special Friday Night Bistros will serve up lovely intercepted food with a relaxed bistro vibe. Booking is essential. On Friday 4th May it will host the University of Leeds Human Rights Journal launch, which will be catered by the Syrian Kitchen. There will be a photography exhibition, speakers, Syrian dance and a three-course Syrian feast. As usual, this is a Pay As You Feel event and all funds will go to the Syrian Kitchen, Human Rights Journal and Rainbow Junktion. There will be a joint fundraiser with LeedsMIND on Friday 11th May. More

fabulous food and music from FIONA (fionamakesmusic.co.uk) whose soulful folk-inspired songs explore issues of mental health and gender inequality. You can book any of these events via the Rainbow Junktion Facebook page, or via emily@rainbowjunktion.org.uk. The Real Junk Food Emporium For the whole month of May, including the dates of the Leeds Indie Food Fest (10 – 28 May) Real Junk Food Emporium will occupy 34-38 Boar Lane (formerly Mr Arkwright’s Tool Emporium!). Leeds first pay-as-you-feel (PAYF) supermarket will be redistributing surplus, discarded and wasted food from around the city.

With edible, safe, and totally delicious food sourced from local businesses, supermarkets, restaurants, and food banks, this is a supermarket for everyone and anyone. To rebel against food waste we must all join the fight. With over 36 millions tonnes of food being wasted every day in the UK, there is enough to go around. In addition, the Emporium will host special five-course dinners on 15th, 22nd and 28th May. Andy Castle (Ox Club), Helen Russell Brown (HRB Bakes) and Caleb Elliott (Rainbow Junktion) will conjure up unexpected, inspiring menus from rescued produce for an intimate evening of food rebellion. It’s also BYOB! With support from The Real Junk Food Project, East St Arts, and LJP Partnership, all proceeds will be reinvested back into local projects associated with the cause. Check online for PAYF supermarket opening times. Tickets: £25 For full details, visit www. leedsindiefood.co.uk

The club has also purchased two defibrillators for public use, which are now installed in Oakwood and Moortown, as well as two rowing machines for the Leeds Rowing Club.

CommunityNews Friends of Roundhay Park Plan Refurbishment of Playground

CLASSS Celebrates a Decade of Educating Leeds Children CLASSS (Community Leeds After School Study Support) is celebrating ten years of educating Leeds’ children. Located at Technorth on Harrogate Road (LS7), it brings together around 40 volunteers and 53 children every Thursday for tutoring in English and Maths.

Friends of Roundhay Park (FoRP) have launched a fundraising appeal to raise £100k to upgrade and refurbish the playground by the Lakeside Cafe in Roundhay Park. The playground currently has a poor selection of equipment and no provision for children with special needs, but Leeds City Council have no capital funds for improvements. Over 1,000 people responded to a recent public consultation, the majority of whom stated that the current playground was in poor repair and contained equipment that was not age appropriate (6 months – 7 years). FoRP have already raised over £20k, but there’s a long way to go. A number of funding applications are currently being considered by the likes of Postcode Lottery, Veolia Environmental Trust, other community grant schemes and private business foundations. Local businesses and individuals are being asked if they would like to donate too and there will be an opportunity to buy personalised bricks to create a permanent pathway or sculpture within the playground (similar to that at Oakwood corner).

Also, if you have a son, daughter, grandchild, niece, nephew or close family friend who’d love to see their name displayed in the playground, you can design a personalised badge from a choice of designs and colours with their name on. Badges are available to buy until 30th June, so don’t miss out. The playground has huge potential. The plan is to replace all the existing equipment with imaginative, fun, and appropriately challenging equipment, encompassing climbing, sliding, spinning, scrambling, swinging, role play and learning. The play surface will be replaced with a safe, colourful rubber surface, improving the look and feel of the playground. It will be made more accessible for children with special needs and include more opportunities for imaginative play. Once funds are raised, installation will be carried out in Winter 2018/2019, and thereafter maintenance will remain the responsibility of Leeds City Council. To donate, please visit https://mydonate. bt.com/charities/friendsofroundhaypark. For more information, contact the team on playground@forp.org

The charity is run by long-time volunteer Emma Bennett with the support of Volunteer Coordinator Rebecca Holden, and a raft of dedicated, unpaid tutors. Each volunteer is trained and DBSchecked and supported by a qualified teacher who acts as Classroom Lead. Every penny of the heavily subsidised fees goes towards teaching, supporting and nurturing the children, who range from Year 2 – Year 11. Last year, Emma had the idea of launching an Amazon Wishlist. Each week, the volunteers put forward what they need, whether that be books, stationery, educational games or something basic, like ink cartridges. If you’d like to support CLASSS, you can donate financially, or pick an item from the Amazon Wish List at https:// amzn.to/2GpBG82 CLASSS is taking on new students in some year groups and operating a waiting list for others. So, if your child is aged between six and 16 and needs support with English and Maths, do get in touch. For further information, visit www. classs.org.uk/, or email Emma at contact@classs.org.uk or search CLASSS Wish List on Amazon Registry

Ponies, Historical Re-enactments and Lots of Fun at Hope Pastures’ Spring Fayre The Spring Fayre at Hope Pastures Horse and Donkey Sanctuary has been an annual event for almost the whole 40 years that the charity has been rescuing animals. A small event when it started, today this May extravaganza is a popular day-out. As well as the usual stalls, fun activities, plant sale, refreshments and food, every year ARC, a re-enactor group, gives a fascinating selection of historical displays (with horses) spanning periods from Early Britain to WW2. The Fayre gives you a chance to meet the rescued animals and this year there will be a special ‘celebrity’ visit from Bobbie and Bessie, two ponies whose rescue story touched the hearts of people across the country, so much so that Bessie won ‘Top Equine Rescue Story’ in a national vote in 2016. You can also catch up with the sanctuary’s latest rescue, Tino, whose desperate case reached across the world earlier this year, with thousands of people, some from

as far away as the USA, donating to help him. You can see for yourself just what his rescue has meant for him and how fantastic he is now. The Fayre is on Sunday 27th May and runs from 10.30am – 3pm. Hope Pastures (LS16 5PH) is easily accessible, located as it is at the Adel junction of the Ring Road; or from Headingley along Weetwood Lane. There is free parking and the No.28 and No.8 buses stop nearby.

CommunityNews Cllr Dan Cohen Alwoodley

Many thanks for the huge number of emails and phone calls that I received in the past month from Alwoodley residents keen to share their concerns about plans to make the A61 single carriageway for private cars from Alwoodley into Leeds Centre, to facilitate the creation of a new bus lane. The full details of the proposals can be found at Leeds.gov.uk/connectingleeds and there is still time to submit your comments and suggestions online. You can also email comments to connectingleeds@leeds.gov.uk I can also give you an update on the introduction of the 20mph speed limits

for most of Alwoodley. The schemes have all been signed off and are going to be implemented in the coming months. Initially there are no plans to introduce traffic calming as part of these schemes. We will be using the SIDS that Neil, Peter and I have provided to persuade drivers to observe the new limits – hopefully this will do the job. The 20mph speed limit on roads between Shadwell Lane and The Ring Road is the final section to be implemented and it will be going through formal consultation in the coming weeks, which will give residents the chance to have their say about the proposals for their streets. The importance of local issues is very much on my mind as we approach the local elections on Thursday 3rd May. When first elected to council you quickly realise that what matters, is not your views on climate

change or energy prices, important as they are. What really matters is why a bin wasn’t emptied, getting a pot hole filled quickly, ensuring a local group gets funding for a new event, or making sure residents know about plans to make changes to the local highway. These ‘little things’ make the difference in a local community and this is what local elections are all about. Local councillors and politicians will have opinions on all sorts of topics, but from what I’ve seen, it’s how well we know our areas and how well we tackle local issues that benefits people’s lives. This year’s local elections are very different as all 99 Leeds City Council seats (three seats in each of the city’s 33 wards) are up for election. This means that every Leeds voter gets three votes that they can use to vote for up to three candidates. Remember, for any and all local issues, Cllrs Neil Buckley, Peter Harrand and myself are here to help…at least until 3rd May election! Team Roundhay in Final Six of National Competition Unite US is a competition that is open to sixth formers across the country. The aim is to conduct a campaign that brings the community together. Team Roundhay decided that work experience was a way in which employers and students could work together to make a change for the better, and it seems they were right – the team has reached the final six! Team Roundhay would like to encourage employers across Leeds to contact them if they offer work experience placements so that they can work together to ensure that more students have access to equal work experience opportunities. Many young people struggle to find work placements relevant to the career sector that interests them. Despite 90% of employers saying that work experience is essential, most do not advertise placements they might have available.

Team Roundhay would like to see a more level playing field for placements so that, when applying for university/ apprenticeships/ internships etc, fewer students are disadvantaged because of their background. The ways they are doing this are by: • Using social media accounts @teamroundhay (twitter/ facebook/ instagram) to raise awareness of the work experience opportunities already available in Leeds, such as the Rolls Royce scheme. This will let more students know about the opportunities out there.

MAKING DREAM SPACES REALITY

Emailing employers across Leeds to ask whether they offer work experience, to raise awareness and to encourage the offering of placements. • Speaking to employers across all sectors in Leeds about why work experience is so important and producing a video which will include any advice they might have for young people wanting to enter their sector. The aim is to show students that no aspiration is too high as well as signposting pathways into the careers they are interested in. CommunityNews Public Meeting: Neighbourhood Planning for Chapel Allerton Chapel Allerton was recently identified as one of the best places to live in the UK –and rightly so! You now have an opportunity, under the Localism Act 2011, to develop, consult and deliver a Neighbourhood Plan to influence how the area will develop in the future. Some communities have used these powers to buy and run local pubs, define arrangements for car parking and create community green spaces. A decade ago, local residents put a great deal of work into developing a local Design and Development Plan, CANPlan, which identified a range of developments and community assets that people wanted to see. These included a village square at the Willow Tree, extending the Conservation Area to protect heritage buildings and renovating Montreal Parade. (http://bit. ly/2H2Myd5 & http://bit.ly/2HwmTZA) The new planning framework would give Chapel Allerton residents and businesses a powerful voice in shaping the neighbourhood. A Plan could include: HOUSING: The right development in the right place. More family homes with gardens. More flats for young professionals. Extra Care housing for older residents Is there sufficient supply of affordable housing? COMMUNITY ASSETS: Previous consultations identified the lack of services for young people in the area. Child care. Can local services (e.g. the library) be further developed to meet local needs? Are more GPs and other health service needed?

ENVIRONMENT: How can the community help in cleaning up the air we breath? Can we improve our green areas, reduce waste and increase recycling? TRANSPORT: Can the area be made more bike and pedestrian friendly? Government funding is available to support the development of Neighbourhood Plans as there is a lot of work involved. For this to happen, a group of enthusiastic and committed people is needed to create a new Neighbourhood Forum. Guidance suggests that this should be a partnership of residents, businesses and services, and it needs to involve a minimum of 21 active members. A Public Meeting on Neighbourhood Planning will be held on Monday 11th June 6.30pm at Seven Arts 31A Harrogate Road, LS7 3PD. A presentation by the City Council about the Neighbourhood Planning process will be followed by discussion. People will be asked to consider being active members of a new Neighbourhood Forum.

Home Garden The Sedge Warbler is a Summer visitor in the UK, arriving from sub-Saharan Africa in mid-April, and leaving in July. Although it is a reedbed specialist, it can also be found in scrubby areas and bushes, ditches and nettle-beds. It breeds in dense vegetation and is quite unobtrusive a lot of the time. When the male sings, however, it perches high on a prominent branch, and belts out its loud, strong and repetitive refrain, often accompanied by a short, jerky song flight. Identifying the Sedge Warbler can be tricky, as, like many migrant songbirds, its plumage is various shades of brown and white to blend in with its surroundings. Its most obviously different feature is the prominent white strip above the eye, and its reddish-brown unstreaked rump is also noticeable in flight. The Reed Warbler, which is also a small brown bird that frequents reedbeds, is duller and much less streaked, as well as being even more unobtrusive than the Sedge Warbler.

FREE PALLETS

Golden plover Photo: Chris Gomersall rspb-images.com

The two can also be distinguished by their song; the Reed Warbler’s being more even, less varied and lower pitched than the Sedge Warbler’s. Loss of wetlands and intensification of farming have caused the population in the UK to decline, but numbers can also be affected by changes in rainfall in their wintering grounds in Africa.

Garden Round Up With Tracy Foster

Plants all rush to be ready for Summer, and suddenly every space in the flower bed seems to fill up with lush new growth. Here are a few ways to help your garden to look its best as it bursts into life.

Ponds Weeds that cover the surface of the pond can be skimmed off with a net. Leave the unwanted weed by the pond for a day or so before putting it on the compost heap so that any pond animals can find their way back to the water. New pond plants can be added, keeping any vigorous ones in baskets. A layer of gravel on the top will keep the compost in place. Tender plants can

Grass will be growing strongly this month so keep mowing your lawns once a week. Shrubs that flowered in Spring can be pruned after flowering so cut back any Forsythia, Japanese Quince, Fuchsia and Flowering Currant. Any branching twigs removed could be used to support the growth of perennials elsewhere in the garden. Food and Flowers for the House Some annual flowers and vegetables can be sown now, directly into soil that has been dug over and broken up to give a fine texture. Adel Dam is 50 Years Old! Garden

After two years of fundraising through various departments of Leeds City Council, Green Leeds Ltd., Wade’s Charity, local businesses and residents, and support from local councillors, the Moortown Community Garden was officially opened on Saturday 17th March by Councillor Sharon Hamilton. Councillor Rebecca Charlwood was also present.

The Adel Dam nature reserve celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this month. Next door to, and downstream from, Golden Acre Park, the reserve was originally a Victorian ‘pleasure garden’ owned by the Edison family of Headingley and Adel. The reserve opened in May 1968, and was developed and maintained by a group of wildlife enthusiasts from the Leeds Birdwatchers’ Club. Paths, hides and bridges were built to create an accessible wildlife area. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust took over in 1987 and today a dedicated team of volunteers maintains it. The reserve covers 19 acres and has two hides – one overlooking a pond and marshy area, the other a small lake. Both hides provide remarkably close up views of birds such as great spotted woodpeckers and nuthatches; 162 species of birds have been recorded here over the last 50 years. A big attraction in recent years has been the kingfishers, which can be seen almost daily from both hides. In Spring 2017, visitors watched a family of five kingfishers from the lake hide.

Mandarin ducks display in front of the marsh hide from November – April. Bank voles are regularly seen and otter sightings have been recorded between October 2017 and March 2018. The reserve is open 365 days of the year and various activities take place throughout the year. ‘Guide in the Hide’ (where volunteers help you to identify the wildlife you can see) take place every third Sunday of the month. There are Dawn Chorus walks in Spring, and guided walks are run for various groups throughout the year. Bat and Fungi walks are popular in late Summer and Autumn. Family days are held when children can bug hunt and build nest boxes. For details of upcoming events, visit the reserve, where posters are displayed, or contact the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust on 01904 659570. The reserve is a real wildlife oasis in North Leeds, enjoyed by visitors from all over the UK. It has even attracted visitors from Australia, the USA, Russia and Brazil.

Turning a piece of unused and unlovely tarmac at the end of Allerton Grove, between the North and South shopping parades at Moortown Corner into a community garden was inspired by MCG committee member Joan Hick, who took on the task of negotiating with all parties concerned. The area has now been re-surfaced with paving and tarmac and includes four benches and four planters. An interpretation board tells the history of Moortown and a community noticeboard provides space for local charities and groups to display information about forthcoming events etc.. The garden will provide a restful, socialising area for shoppers, as well as a pleasant splash of green to a busy suburban parade. The planters will be maintained by Moortown in Bloom and the noticeboard (not available for commercial use) will be kept up-to-date by members of Moortown Community Group. Anyone wishing to display on the board should contact MCG via www.moortowncommunitygroup. org.uk, Facebook, or email moortowncommunitygroup@ hotmail.co.uk

Sound&Vision Film Review By Brendan Campbell

A QUIET PLACE DIRECTED BY: JOHN KRASINSKY STARRING: JOHN KRASINSKY, EMILY BLUNT, MILLICENT SIMMONDS, NOAH JUPE CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 90 MINS Shhh! You hear that? It’s the sound of a non-sequel/franchise instalment, stand-alone original movie doing some serious box office business. No mean feat these days, especially considering that, while most mainstream Hollywood fare tends to utilise all manner of brash, blaring bells and whistles to snag the attention of the filmgoing public, ‘A Quiet Place’ keeps the volume turned down low, it’s use of silence it’s USP. I mean, it’s got ‘Quiet’ right there in the title, for god’s sake! It hardly screams ‘Blockbuster Hit!’ Ironically, the film is produced by Michael Bay; a director terminally allergic to subtlety who seems incapable of making a film with a decibel level below deafening.

A prologue introduces us to the Abbott family (couple Lee and Evelyn and their kids, Regan, Marcus and Beau) who we see scavenging for supplies in a ravaged and deserted, anonymous small-town USA; a scene bound to strike a familiar chord with anyone who has witnessed depictions of the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. Throughout their supply run we note that the family takes pains to avoid making a sound and, on their way home, a tragedy befalls the Abbotts that lets us know exactly why, neatly setting up the film’s premise. We learn that earth has been subjected to an invasion of alien creatures who, while blind, have extraordinarily acute hearing which they use to hunt their prey with lethal efficiency. In this world, to be heard is to die swiftly, but one imagines quite gruesomely. The film’s action takes place over a year after humanity’s numbers have been drastically reduced and the discovery that noise is what makes one vulnerable to attack (“It’s Sound!” trumpets a newspaper headline in the opening scene). We see the family eking out a tentative, cautious approximation of a rural idyll, albeit in a muffled, muted fashion. The Abbotts seem to have grown accustomed to their necessary survival tactics and in this regard they have something of an edge; one of their children is deaf, meaning they were already well versed in sign language before silence became imperative. Their continued survival and successful farm living speaks to our adaptability as a species, suggesting that when our lives depend on it, we’re capable of adjusting to all manner of circumstances. However, if the given circumstances here weren’t fraught with tension enough already, the film ratchets things up with the revelation that Evelyn is pregnant; a situation bound to present some challenges seeing as childbirth and infant-rearing aren’t things one tends to associate with hushed tones. I can’t help but think that on their scavenger shopping list the Abbotts would’ve done well to include birth control.

be considered the refuge of the hack horror director, Krasinsky deploys them effectively here (I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit I nearly leapt out of my seat on more than one occasion) and although not everything quite hits the mark, the film’s flaws are negligible overall. As an exploration of parental anxieties and the pressures of keeping one’s children safe ‘A Quiet Place’ is perhaps a little heavy handed but as a taut, brisk, nerve-jangling sci-fi-horror/thriller it ably gets the job done. ‘A Quiet Place’ makes the most of its deceptively simple central concept. Once the rules of this world are established, the audience, aware of the ever-present threat lurking offscreen, becomes finely attuned to subtle details of the film’s sound design, constantly on the lookout for a potential source of untoward noise. At a lean 90 minutes and with a cast barely exceeding four people, this is an impressive exercise in stripped-down economical filmmaking. While jump-scares may rightly

Sound&Vision Circuit des Yeux Presents New Soundtrack for Salomé

Specially commissioned by Opera North Projects, as part of Leeds International Festival 2018, a new score by Circuit des Yeux for the cult silent film ‘Salomé’ will receive its world première at the Howard Assembly Room on Saturday 12th May. The vehicle for the otherworldly voice of Haley Fohr, Circuit des Yeux combines fingerpicked guitar, avantgarde electronics, minimalism and song into a sound that has drawn comparisons with Nina Simone, Nico and even Scott Walker. Fohr and her band bring their distinctive sonics to the scandalous 1923 film based on the story of Herod’s stepdaughter who demands the head of John the Baptist in payment for dancing for the lustful king. Like Strauss’s 1905 opera, which Opera North recently performed at Leeds Town Hall,

the film was inspired by Oscar Wilde’s notorious play, and Aubrey Beardsley’s decadent illustrations for it. Conceived and financed by the Russian actress Alla Nazimova, who also took the title role, Salomé was a resounding flop on its release, shunned by the major studios for its salacious story and the rumours of debauchery that surrounded its star. In the years since, its weirdly beautiful atmosphere and aesthetic – combining Art Nouveau, modernism and the glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age – have led to its growing recognition as an exotic gem and a cornerstone of camp. “Opera North Projects’ long-running FILMusic programme is all about exploring new imaginative possibilities for classic and lesser-known celluloid works of art, and from this point of

view Salomé and Circuit des Yeux feels like a dream combination”, said Jo Nockels, Opera North’s Projects Manager. “Viewers will find much to love in the strange, extravagant world of the film, and Haley’s score will transport it to unexpected new places while illuminating the ambiguities and eccentricities that originally made it so daring.” Salomé is the latest in Opera North’s series of soundtrack commissions. Most recently, Norwegian musician Jan Bang and Matt Calvert of Three Trapped Tigers re-scored the Soviet film Battleship Potemkin to commemorate the centenary of the Russian Revolution. Tickets (£13/ concessions available), are available from 0844 848 2727 or online at operanorth.co.uk

Sound&Vision Billie Holiday Forms

Soundtrack to a Story of Love, Loss & Hope Writer, director, performer, poet and jazz singer Cheryl Martin brings her Billie Holiday inspired show ‘Who Wants to Live Forever?’ to Slung Low at 67 Bath Rd, LS11 on Sunday 13th May at 5pm. The hour-long, one-woman show is a jazz fantasy about loss, love and hope, set among the stars. It combines science fact, real-world psychological observation and autobiography with lots of jazz vocals to ask why some stars shine more brightly than others, human and celestial, and why people love to watch them falling.

It’s all channelled through the music of Billie Holiday, the first star Cheryl wished on as a child. “My father had a really good jazz collection, lots of be-bop, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday”, said Cheryl. “Billie was my main influence. In the show, I wonder why people are so fascinated by falling stars.” Cheryl is a striking voice in contemporary theatre, both in her performances and in her work as a director. She examines experiences that many people are afraid to talk about, but approaches them with humour, warmth, and raw honesty that draws audiences in. www.slunglow.org/

Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill ‘Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill’, a journey through the life and songs of one of the greatest musical theatre composers of the 20th century, comes to the City Varieties from 15th – 21st June. The world of cabaret is the setting for this tour of highlights from the Kurt Weill songbook, from the smoky cafés of 1920’s Berlin, to Broadway of the 1940s. Numbers include ‘Mack the Knife,’ ‘Pirate Jenny,’‘Alabama Song,’‘September Song,’ ‘Speak Low’ and many more. Weill was a prominent composer in Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s, before fleeing Nazi

Germany and settling in the United States. He collaborated with many of the leading lyricists and playwrights of the age, from Bertolt Brecht to Ira Gershwin, Alan Jay Lerner, and Langston Hughes. This compelling retrospective, coproduced by Opera North and West Yorkshire Playhouse, brings together a motley crew of characters: the murderers, gangsters and fugitives who populate Weill’s extraordinary catalogue of songs. The show is

brought to life by an ensemble of performers from Opera North with musical direction by Martin Pickard and directed by Giles Havergal. Weill’s American exile yields the beautiful, heartfelt ‘September Song’ and ‘Speak Low,’ both memorably recorded by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holliday among others, and part of Weill’s own chapter in the Great American Songbook. Tickets are available from 0113 243 0808 / cityvarieties.co.uk, or from Opera North on 0844 848 2720 / operanorth.co.uk

Kam Cycles to Paris

Event at Leeds

for Candlelighters

Mental Health City Museum A free community mental health event especially for men with mental health issues or those supporting men with mental health issues (or for anyone wanting to learn about others' lived experiences), will be held at Leeds City Museum on Sunday 20th May, 11am – 4pm. This is a safe space for people to access advice and support from charities and organisations. Stallholders include activity and social groups for people to sign up to; classes and groups that might help their mental health such as Leeds Rhinos Foundation, Leeds Photography Group and Leeds Repair Cafe. The majority of stallholders have experienced mental health problems or suicide bereavement.

Kam Johal from Horsforth has set herself the challenge of cycling from London to Paris in July this year to raise funds for Candlelighters, the charity that provides care and support to children with cancer and their families across Yorkshire.

“Kam has set herself a huge challenge”, said Jen Aspinall, Candlelighters’ Community Fundraiser. “Last year she took on the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride, cycling 70 miles from Wetherby to Filey. She’s going the extra 164 miles this year to raise even more money!”

She will cover 234 miles across England and France in just three days. “I visited Candlelighters recently and was inspired by the amazing work they do”, said Kam. “Candlelighters are making a huge difference to the lives of children and their families here in Yorkshire.”

It costs Candlelighters £1.6 million a year to provide a variety of services to the families of children suffering from cancer. Her support will make a huge difference.

To help Kam on her way, Diligent Fitness in Rodley is hosting a Candlelighters’ Charity Work Out on Saturday 12th May, starting at 10am. It is open to everyone. To reserve your place (£5) contact Kam at johalkk@hotmail.com

If you would like to support Kam, please visit https://give.everydayhero.com/uk/ kam-s-london-to-paris-cycle If you are interested in taking on your own challenge, please contact Jen on 0113 322 9283, info@candlelighters.org.uk, or visit www.candlelighters.org.uk

There will be free workshops by a number of experienced people, including ex-Rugby League player Jimmy Gittins on behalf of State of Mind Sport and Leeds Mindfulness, wellbeing coach Liz Dawson, writers Russell Lloyd and James Oddy, Darren Sanderson Photography, Lee Johnson Fitness, and Steve Hart, organiser of Leeds Mindfulness & Positive Emotion Enhancement Centre. A tombola will help to raise money for CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), and there will be children's entertainment. Everyone is welcome. Open Day at Leeds If you’d like to have a go then go along to their Club Open Day – there will be boules for you to borrow and plenty of friendly faces to help get you started.

Pétanque Club Leeds Petanque Club is holding an Open Day on Sunday 6th May from 11am at the Richmond House School Playing Fields on Glen Road in Far Headingley, just off Otley Road.

For more information, visit www. leedspetanque.wordpress.com

Pétanque is a sociable, strategic and sometimes frenetic ball game from France in which teams compete to throw their steel balls, known as boules, closest to a much smaller ball called the coche. It’s easy to pick up but you’ll quickly discover that clever tactics, subtle tricks and a little bit of luck can give your team the edge over the opposition. Started back in 2006, The Leeds Pétanque Club’s membership ranges from casual weekend players right up to people competing at national and international levels. They regularly put on demonstrations in and around Leeds and are always happy to welcome new members, regardless of age or ability.

Younger Life Rotary Technology Tournament 2018 Another Resounding Success

GSAL Students Raise Over £3,000 for Rohingya Community The Islamic Society at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) recently raised over £3,000 for the Penny Appeal charity during an evening of family fun. The money will go towards providing food, clothes, blankets, hygiene items, water and shelter for displaced Rohingyan refugees.

Britain has been one of the world’s innovators of technological products since VictoriancTimes, however, recent research shows that we are now facing a critical skills gap. To compete in a world market, more children need to see the benefits of pursuing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The Rotary Clubs of Leeds recently held their Technology Tournament at the John Charles Centre, with 15 schools entering 36 teams (approx.150 children) to compete for prizes. The tasks became more difficult as the ages increased. The benefit of this competition was that the children had to work in teams; communicate, plan and explain their design development in a written portfolio, then have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and modify their original thoughts. The final construction was then tested to see if it met the design brief. Judges were on hand to make suggestions that the children might have wished to investigate, to improve their model.

The event was attended by the commented “It is amazing that the teams were all given the same brief to design and build a model which had to achieve a practical purpose, but each team’s design varied to achieve the required end result”, said Cllr. Jane Dowson, Lord Mayor of Leeds, attended the event. “It was wonderful to see our school students tackle the project with such enthusiasm. There was a real buzz about the place. I hope it inspires them to become the scientists and engineers of tomorrow and fulfil the skills gap we have in the country.” The prize winners were: Foundation – Roundhay College; Intermediate – Grammar School at Leeds; Advanced – Grammar School at Leeds; Innovation – Abbey Grange School. The competition is supported by Leeds University, Becketts University, West Yorkshire Society of Architects, local Rotary Clubs and Councillors.

The event was organised by Year 13 students Husna Mahmood, Adnan Akhtar, Aiman Zaidi and Bushra Tellisi, supported by Mrs Nema Saeed, teaching assistant and Muslim faith coordinator, and a team of 20 student volunteers. “We kept seeing the Rohingya in some news reports but not all – despite it being such a big crisis”, said Bushra. “We were inspired by a successful fundraiser at the school for Syrian refugees five years ago and wanted to do something to help.” The students received donations from across the community, meaning that most of the ticket money could be donated directly to the charity. My Lahore restaurant donated the food and Starbucks donated coffee, while parents and others gave items for an auction and materials for games and other activities. Musical entertainment was provided by sixth form band ‘The Aerials’.

NSPCC Needs More Volunteers for Schools Service The NSPCC is asking people to join its Schools Service and help deliver ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ assemblies that teach primary school children how to keep themselves safe from abuse and neglect. The service aims to visit every primary school across the UK every three years. In the last academic year, it has visited 244 schools.

The Speak Out Stay Safe programme is delivered by specially trained NSPCC staff and volunteers who deliver age appropriate messages which link directly to the curriculum helping children aged 4-11 to: • Understand abuse and recognise the signs

"Without our volunteers, our programme simply couldn’t exist”, said Nick Hanslip, NSPCC Schools Manager. “We are always looking for committed volunteers to join our team. It’s a great way to meet new people and learn a new skill, while giving something back to the community. The NSPCC gives you all the training and support you need to feel confident in your role. We ask for a minimum commitment of three morning or afternoon visits a month."

• Learn how to protect themselves • Know how to get help and the sources available, including Childline For further information, visit www.nspcc. org.uk/

We urgently need families to accommodate our international adult and junior students. We offer competitive rates and excellent back-up support. So, if you have a spare, single, twin or triple room, do please get in touch! Centre of English Studies is an award winning, British Council accredited, English language school.
