0113 293 4304 After several visits to a friend in West Park, photographer Arnold Wilson noticed how very attractive her garden looked at the height of each season…..suddenly the idea for a book was born! ‘How to Photograph Garden Plants and Wildlife Through Four Seasons’ aims to help photographers get the best out of their cameras when photographing outdoors. It starts by describing the main components of the camera and how each part functions, while technical terms such as ‘depth of field’, ‘shutter priority’, ‘ISO settings’ and many more are all explained. Composition is an area often neglected by many photographers and topics include positioning the subject in the frame, the direction of the lighting, choosing an appropriate background and several more, all discussed in detail.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

Jane Elizabeth Brown (1847-1921) Founder of the Victoria Home, Headingley How best to provide for the elderly and infirm remains as vital a topic today as it ever was. Money has always been an issue, but in the late nineteenth century social position came into the mix too. When Jane Brown was looking for a cause to devote her energies and her considerable fortune to in the 1880s she was very conscious of the vulnerability of single women of her own class. She saw the need for a sanctuary for the sick and disabled without money or family, whose only recourse otherwise would be the workhouse. So she set about founding a home ‘for invalid ladies’ to provide security and care. The institution she founded was to survive over 120 years.

Jane Brown was born in Roundhay in 1847, the only daughter of Eliza and William Brown, both Unitarians active in good works. Her father was a wealthy textile merchant, partner in a thriving business in Bradford. In 1858 in an upmarket move he bought land at Weetwood, leafy and exclusive, and had a handsome stone house built there for the family: Bardon Grange – Cuthbert Brodrick of Town Hall fame was probably the architect. Across Weetwood Lane he had a second mansion, ‘the Hollies’, built around 1871 for his son George William. (Both houses are still there) Jane lived in Bardon Grange with her parents until their deaths and then stayed on, never marrying. In 1882 she inherited money from her father and began planning her ‘Ladies’ Home’ project. Her dream was realised when she opened the first Victoria Home in a rented house in Grosvenor Road in 1885, with five residents. It was dedicated to her parents. When the waiting list for admission grew she bought larger premises in Broomfield Crescent, and finally in 1901 a spacious detached house in Kirkstall Lane: called ‘The Limes’, set in gardens. She undertook a major extension to take 20 residents and vested the property in trustees. A body of loyal subscribers helped to fund and maintain the Home.

She was a formidable figure, acting first as Secretary then as President of the Home, trotting down regularly from Weetwood in her pony trap. She set firm rules. All residents were expected to contribute, usually 10 shillings to £1 a week, in return for board and lodgings, nursing and medical care. Applicants had to provide evidence of their medical condition, ability to pay, and their social position. There were no religious barriers. The aim was to provide a comfortable, permanent home for chronically sick or disabled women of education and status who had no means of support (no state benefits then). In 1903 the Home in Kirkstall Lane was formally opened by Lady Lucy Cavendish, who praised the cheerful home-like rooms, the exceptional care, and the moderate charges. A 1909 newspaper article on the Home commented that here gentlewomen could enjoy the niceties of life – no ‘thick-cut bread and butter’ or ‘ready-made tea mixed with milk and sugar’ which might suit the multitude but would be nothing short of a nightmare for ladies of refined tastes! More importantly it provided life-long security and dedicated care.

Jane Brown continued to devote time and money to the Home. There was a financial deficit each year, but she and her supporters managed to keep it afloat through fundraising bazaars, donations and volunteers – the two doctors attending gave their time free of charge. Treats and outings were organised when possible, as in 1908 when borrowed carriages took the ladies down to see the decorations for the Royal visit. Improvements like a lift (worked initially by ropes) were introduced when cash allowed. In the First World War the ladies knitted assiduously for the forces and army horses occupied the stables. Jane Brown like many others had her personal tragedy: the death of her nephew, Major Harold Brown, in 1918. Her brother George William later donated his mansion ‘The Hollies’ and its magical park to the city, in his son’s memory.

Jane hrself died in 1921, aged 73, but left a generous bequest to the Home. A strong character, motivated by faith and duty, she had inspired great affection (and awe), and was long remembered on ‘Founder’s Day’. Oldfashioned as she was in her ways and dress, her ideas had been ahead of their time. Over the years the Victoria Home continued to offer care and refuge but struggled to modernise. Money remained tight, in spite of a YEP appeal on the centenary in 1985. In the end it could not survive and closed in 2007, its 20 residents, some over 100, dispersed. Its assets were transferred to MHA to provide care facilities for the elderly, and a modern assisted-living complex, Victoria Court, now occupies the site.

Life&Style Car Confidence – Trading Standards Expose Mis-selling in Used Car Sales

e West Yorkshire Trading Standards have issued fresh guidance on the purchase of used cars to residents across West Yorkshire. This guidance is the result of a recent ‘week of action’ undertaken by West Yorkshire Trading Standards where random checks were carried out on independent car garages across the region. Over 60 used cars that were advertised for sale were spot-checked, 35 of these were mechanically inspected and, shockingly, one in three of these was deemed by an independent consultant engineer to be unsafe to drive.

A common theme was poor repair accident damage that left the cars structurally weakened. One example, a 2016 BMW 335i Estate was found to have a deformed chassis and inner wings, with over 5mm of filler used to disguise the damage; and a 2007 Ford Focus C Max was found to have a significantly deformed side sill and B pillar, again filler had been applied to cover deformation.

Other key findings were that one in four cars were falsely described as having full/part service history, and another one in four cars were falsely described as having 12 months MOT. Included in their guidance, West Yorkshire Trading Standards encourage people to check that the condition of the car is consistent with the indicated mileage, as one in eight cars checked had a mileage discrepancy. The key driver to the ‘week of action’ was that the purchase of used vehicles is one of the top consumer complaints received by Citizens’ Advice, with nearly 11,000 complaints made each year.

“Our findings should act as a stark reminder to anyone who is thinking about purchasing a second-hand motor vehicle”, said David Lodge, Head of West Yorkshire Trading Standards. “Some parts of the motor trade have always generated a significant number of complaints but what our findings have uncovered is the serious nature of the problems that consumers may encounter. Often consumers are easily seduced by the excitement of a new car purchase, but undertaking a few basic checks before you part with any cash could save you lots of time and hassle in the future.” More guidance on the purchase of vehicles can be found at wyjs.org.uk/ carconfidence

Phoenix Dance Theatre is ‘At Home’

Phoenix Dance Theatre presents its eighth ‘Phoenix at Home’ production at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from Thursday 18th – Saturday 20th October at 7.30pm, with a matinee on Saturday at 2pm.

Last year, Phoenix at Home saw the company celebrate female choreographers, presenting works by some of the company’s own talented dancer/choreographers, including a piece by multi-award-winning Sandrine Monin.

This year Phoenix will present Robert North’s renowned ‘Troy Game’. Described by the New York Times as a ‘funny and sexy romp’, it is a tongue-in-cheek parody of male machismo specially re-staged for Phoenix to include female dancers.

Minu Achrekar Exhibits at HEART Minu Achrekar is a practicing medical doctor working in the NHS with a strong interest in art. She works in watercolour, acrylic, oil paints and textured media and has exhibited in several art shows and galleries around Leeds. Her next exhibition, ‘Beautiful Living’, will run from 22nd October to 21st December in the Ridge Room at HEART on Bennett Road, Headingley. Her childhood in India has given her a love of vibrant colours and her inspiration is endless – from imaginative worlds to living landscapes, cityscapes, animals and flora. She is passionate about making art accessible and has chosen a selection of pocket-friendly paintings that would suit numerous settings.

Profits from the exhibition will be donated to two charities – Candlelighters, which provides care and support to children with cancer and their families; and the NAAM foundation, which provides financial support, infrastructure and educational development to drought stricken areas of rural Maharashtra, India.

‘Europe’ Resonates at Leeds Playhouse Leeds Playhouse will stage David Greig's politically resonant play, ‘Europe’, from Friday 12th October – Saturday 3rd November in its temporary, 350- seat theatre on the Playhouse’s current site. Written in 1994, at the height of the Balkan conflict, the production explores our relationship with our continent – particularly pertinent as this becomes more and more politicised. The play is set around a small-town railway station and follows the plight of two economic refugees as they arrive in an unnamed town near an unnamed European border.

“I was fascinated by David Greig's play from the moment I read it over 20 years ago”, said James Brining. “Staging it feels as important now as when it was first written, which is a measure of its power as a modern classic. The story focuses on the power of human connection and friendship. As a theatre of sanctuary, the Playhouse works tirelessly to combat the feeling of displacement and I am really interested in how this production will provoke discussions around our own sense of belonging.”

This often funny and moving production will be directed by Leeds Playhouse Artistic Director James Brining and designed by awardwinning designer Amanda Stoodley. It will feature seven of the Playhouse’s Ensemble Company, including Jo Mousley as Katia and Robert Pickavance as Sava. Joining them will be Jo Alessi as Fret; Lladel Bryant as Billy; Darren Kuppan as Morocco; Dan Parr as Berlin; and Tessa Parr as Adele. They will be joined by Alex Nowark as Horse.

Amanda Stoodley added: "I used to live in Leeds, so there's always a bit of my heart here and I love coming back to see how the city is doing. With that in mind, it would be heartbreaking to return to a place one knew and cared for, to find it in the same distress, turmoil and confusion as the town in ‘Europe’. It is a hard-hitting, thoughtprovoking story that strikes a very real chord in changing times for all of us and how we move, or not, with them." Black History Month at St Martin’s St. Martin’s Church, St. Martin’s View, Potternewton LS7 3LB, is marking Black History Month with a spectacular, free exhibition of costumes from earlier Carnivals, which will be displayed in the church from Saturday 13th – Saturday 27th October. This has been made possible through the generosity of Mr Hughbon Condor of High Esteem Costumes, who has been involved with the design of carnival costumes for almost 50 years. He will be giving a presentation at the opening on Saturday 13th October (4 – 6pm). War Requiem Commemorating the Armistice Exhibitions of vintage photographs don’t normally accompany concerts by Leeds Festival Chorus, but there will be one already in place at Leeds Town Hall, linking it to a performance of Benjamin Britten’s deeply emotional ‘War Requiem’ on 17th November. The exhibition is in the Brodrick Exhibition Space for three months from the beginning of October. With the concert, it commemorates the Armistice of 1918. Alongside the Leeds singers will be the City of Glasgow Chorus, the Cantabile Choir, soloists, Evelina Dobračeva (soprano), Andrew Staples (tenor) and Benjamin Appl (baritone), and the BBC Philharmonic, with conductor Simon Wright. The photographs are of ancestors of members of the three choirs who were active at the time of the First World War. Others are of staff and patients at the Second Northern General Hospital at Beckett Park, Headingley, which was the main war hospital in Leeds.

“I asked as many singers as possible to burrow around in their family histories”, said curator Richard Wilcocks, who sings bass with Leeds Festival Chorus. “I also used my digital archive from when I was researching my book ‘Stories from the War Hospital’ in 2014. What I received was personal, intimate and compelling.”

The exhibition includes young men and women who fought in the great catastrophe and those who did not. Nurses and doctors appear beside men who fought, survivors and casualties. One of the larger photographs is of Benjamin Britten, taken in 1964, placed next to a large manuscript by Wilfred Owen, a first draft of his famous poem ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’.

Britten, a pacifist, was very affected by the poetry of Wilfred Owen, who was killed fighting his way across a French canal in the war’s last month. He wrote a quotation from him on the title page of his score - "My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity" – and interspersed nine of Owen’s poems amongst the Latin words of the Requiem. A soprano soloist with a large chorus is needed for these words, and the poems are sung by a tenor and a baritone, giving a visceral sense of what war is like.

‘War Requiem’ was composed as a commission for the rededication of Coventry Cathedral in 1962. The horrors of the First World War represent those of all wars. The

The Leeds Gathering: A Celebration of Irish Music & Arts The Leeds Gathering, a celebration of Irish music and arts, runs from 12th – 20th October. Organised by the Leeds-based Irish Arts Foundation, events are designed to appeal to both those of an Irish background and people from the wider community with an interest in music and the arts.

As usual, the festival features a number of concerts, traditional Irish music sessions, literary and educational events as well as a film screening. The fourteenth Leeds Gathering features some of the most experienced and emerging performers and artistes in the world of Irish music and arts.

First formed in 1983, the influential foursome Buttons and Bows - made up of Jackie Daly, Séamus and Manus McGuire and Garry O’Briain, will play Inkwell on Saturday 20th October, and from County Mayo the up and coming band Blás, play The New Headingley Club on Saturday 13th October.

Set during the Irish War of Independence in the early 1920s, Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton will be screening The Wind That Shakes the Barley (Director: Ken Loach) on Monday 15th October. Also at Seven Arts on Wednesday 17th October, Ladies Who Punch, in association with Mend & MakeDo Theatre Company, present ‘Corner Boys’. This powerful play exposes the light and dark sides of rural Irish life in the sixties – the carnivals, the sodalities, the shenanigans, the humour and the desperation. “We are particularly delighted to welcome Blás, from Foxford in North County Mayo, this year, a dynamic young band that hail from a part of Ireland with strong links to Leeds”, said John O’Dwyer, Irish Arts Foundation trustee. “The Leeds Irish community represents members from all over Ireland but there exists an extremely strong connection with County Mayo. St Gemma’s 40th Anniversary Arts Festival

A Vegan Masquerade Ball for Miracle’s Mission Step out in style at the Winterfest Vegan Masquerade Ball - the UK’s first vegan and palm oil free masquerade ball and dinner – on Saturday 17th November at Leeds United Football Club. There will be a wonderful three course vegan and palm oil free meal, followed by entertainment, including a live band, DJ, and a dance performance. The festival will also display artwork from the Secret Art Project, which features works from famous artists and celebrities, including PM Theresa May and the Kaiser Chiefs.

This celebration of local arts will feature two special exhibitions alongside the hospice’s annual art and photography exhibition and sale. The 40 Faces of St Gemma’s exhibition, previously displayed at Leeds City Museum, features the photography of Olivia Hemingway, who specialises in portraits with a natural, relaxed style. The subjects have been photographed in places significant to them and their stories are told alongside the pictures. The exhibition demonstrates strong feelings of hope, love, humour and bravery and help to show the reality of hospice care.

Alongside the exhibition there will be an arts café selling homemade cakes, coffee and teas. ‘The Arts Exhibition is a wonderful celebration of arts, showcasing the fantastic talents of local artists”, said Pete Watson, St Gemma’s Senior Events Fundraiser. “It is also an important fundraiser for the hospice, as a percentage of every artwork sold is donated to St Gemma’s, contributing towards the £9 million we need to raise every year to keep the doors of the Hospice open.” Admission to the Arts Festival is just £3. Red Ladder Theatre Celebrates 50 Years with Brecht Pauline McLynn will take on the titular role in Bertolt Brecht’s ‘Mother Courage & Her Children’ in Red Ladder Theatre’s 50th anniversary production at Albion Electric warehouse, South Accommodation Road, LS10 1PR, from 28th September – 20th October. Artistic director Rod Dixon directs Bertolt Brecht’s timeless anti-war play, from the dark and witty translation by Lee Hall, as an immersive production. Audiences will follow in the footsteps of Brecht’s fearless matriarch as she hauls her wagon through battlefields and bombed out villages. Rod Dixon’s production re-examines the relevance of Brecht’s 20th century masterpiece for today. Echoing the contemporary refugees’ universal displacement, Mother Courage & Her Children asks urgent questions surrounding the stigma and fear of immigration and the effects of war, and integrates a professional cast and community chorus. Leeds Choir Marks Armistice Commemorations with New Requiem St Peter’s Singers are preparing to mark the centenary of the end of the Great War with the world premiere of a new work created by two of its own members. ‘Penthos’ – a new Requiem - was composed by Matthew Oglesby, with a visionary text by Hannah Stone, and you can hear its first performance at St. Michael’s Church, Headingley, on Saturday 27th October at 6pm. ‘Penthos’ is a significant contribution to the City’s Armistice commemorations. Expressed in hauntingly beautiful poetry and music, the piece is a meditation on that ancient spirit of mourning articulated in the Greek word penthos. It allows us to remember all those who died, and to reflect on the appalling wars that continue to disfigure our world 100 years after ‘the war to end all wars’. Scored for choir, orchestra and soloists, Matthew Oglesby’s music fuses ancient sounds of Russian bells and Eastern Orthodox chanting with the music of English, French and German composers from the time of the Great War. Moments of stunning choral simplicity contrast with the carefully orchestrated sounds of a sizeable orchestra and the highly personalised utterances of contralto and baritone soloists.

Originating in the Middle East, the idea of penthos – being sorry when you do wrong, either as an individual or as a community – is the first step to putting things right with those you have hurt and leads to the joy of reconciliation and happier relations. Hannah Stone is an award-winning poet who is also an academic expert on penthos. Forms Established in the Light at Sunny Bank

'Forms Established in the Light’ is the latest exhibition at Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley, inspired by the parallels between art, architecture and design. Thirty-three artists from all over the country exhibit an eclectic mix of work, including ceramics, drawing, furniture, film, photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles. Each piece challenges the audience to consider their perception of architecture, space and design. Exhibiting artists include Ellen PaigeLeach (Bridlington), Clare Holdstock (Hull), Sue Mann (York), and Shane Green, whose wooden sculptures are renowned around Leeds.

Alun Kirby’s origami sculpture ‘Reconstructed Memory’ and Russell Hughes’ ‘Recording Movement and Spatial Disruption – Five Walks in Millenium Square, which uses crowd control barriers and print to explore how people walk through public spaces, are also included. Amanda Lwin (London) was recently commissioned as part of Selected Sculpture in the City; Jo Taylor is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors; and Kevin Pocock’s painting ‘Brutal Façade’, was in the John Moores painting prize 2012. New Crick-EAT Initiative Helped to Reduce #HolidayHunger About 30,000 children in Leeds go hungry during school holidays – meaning that the children return to school fatigued and do not perform well academically, not to mention the effect this has on their mental wellbeing and happiness. Crick-Eat is a new Yorkshire Cricket Foundation (YCF) initiative which aims to reduce #HolidayHunger. In August they made their way to three Leeds parks armed with packed lunches and Kwik Cricket sets. Using Pop-Up Cricket to attract children, they gave away 155 meals in three weeks. The sessions, delivered by YCF partners Pro Coach, provided an opportunity for children to play cricket for up to two hours. It was completely free and a great way to introduce the game to those who

might not normally play the game. The children were provided with a packed lunch to either eat then or take home. The YCF received funding through Leeds Community Foundation. The packed lunches were provided by Fuel for School. “It’s great that funding became available to run a holiday hunger programme over the Summer”, said Beth Cook, YCF Health & Wellbeing Manager. “With so many children in Leeds going hungry over the holidays, it was important for us to run a project that made a real difference in the community.”

Phoenix Concert Band to Perform in Aid of The Crypt Phoenix Concert Band will perform a fiery musical assortment at St George’s Church at 7.30pm on Saturday 20th October, in aid of St George’s Crypt, the homeless charity, which is currently fundraising for a muchneeded new van to replace their current vehicle, which is nearly falling apart! The charity relies on it to collect food, furniture and other items. Phoenix Concert Band is a large wind orchestra that plays a rich variety of music from film and musical theatre to swing and popular classics. Advonet is looking for volunteers to support adults with learning disabilities as Citizen Advocates Citizen Advocates are fully trained volunteers who help adults with learning disabilities with a range of things including: visiting clients and getting to know their wishes and preferences; building relationships and advocating for the client when needed; identify the client’s choices and decisions, but not making or influencing them. They remain independent of both professionals who provide services such as housing, care and support, and the client’s family. Full training is given over four days and covers Learning Disabilities Awareness, Safeguarding and Effective Advocacy and Negotiation Skills. The time commitment varies but will be at least two hours a month. Long term relationships will require at least 12 months. In August, I promised to keep readers updated with Council plans to turn the A61 into a single carriageway for private cars to create a bus and cycle lane to and from the city centre.

In the short term, the Council is very keen to press ahead with another smaller scheme on the Alwoodley section of the A61 (between Alwoodley Gates and The Ring Road). The details can be found at www.Leeds.gov.uk/connectingleeds. The scheme involves a bus and cycle lane for a section Northbound - approaching the Alwoodley Lane / Wigton Moor junction; and on the road Southbound – a bus and cycle lane for a section approaching the Ring Road roundabout.

I met recently with Council officers and the Council’s transport consultants to hear the results of the first consultation earlier this year and learn about the current plans.

Some road widening would be required for the bus lanes on both sides of the road and officers would like to have this whole job completed by next summer.

Nearly 70% of the several thousand responses were not supportive of proposals to reduce the A61 to one lane. Despite this, plans are being drawn up for another consultation on what is essentially the same proposal. The finer details are due to be published in the Autumn and there will be another chance to let the Council know your views.

Originally, Council officers wanted to hold an information evening on 18th September and close the public consultation in early October – giving residents virtually no time to respond. This has now been changed – the new date for the information event is Thursday 4th October, 5 – 8pm at Treetops Community Centre. This is a drop-in event.

Advice Helps with Universal Credit Roll-out Chapeltown Citizens Advice is helping people to get ready for Universal Credit as it rolls out in full across Leeds from 10th October. This new benefit aims to help people on a low income or not in work meet their living costs. It combines six benefits, including Housing Benefit and Working Tax Credit, into a single monthly payment. At the moment in Leeds, Universal Credit is only available to single jobseekers but from 10th October parents, couples and people who can’t work due to health issues who make a new claim will also receive it. Chapeltown Citizens Advice is highlighting the changes due to take effect around how Universal Credit is claimed and paid, so that people can prepare before applying for the new benefit. People need to be aware that:

Every year, as the breeding season comes to a close, thousands of ducks and geese head south to the coasts of the UK to spend Winter in a milder climate with a plentiful supply of food. Among these are over 28,000 Pintails, arriving from Scandinavia and Russia to our coasts, estuaries and large wetlands. The Pintail is a small but very elegant duck, with a long, thin neck and a long tail. The male has an almost completely chocolate brown head, apart from a distinctive white stripe running down one side. From a distance, its body appears mainly grey with drooping cream and black back feathers. Like many ducks it rewards closer inspection, as its grey body is very finely barred, adding to the overall beauty of its plumage. The Pintail is a ‘dabbling’ duck – meaning that it feeds largely on or just below the surface of the water on plants and small creatures such as water beetles and snails. It often upends, making use of its long neck to reach further

down. It is not as vocal as the mallard, for example, but the male does produce a drawn-out whistling sound, especially in the breeding season. Fewer than 50 pairs of Pintail breed in the UK, mostly in Norfolk and the west of Scotland. Friends of Roundhay Park Take Platinum in RHS Awards Friends of Roundhay Park recently won Platinum in the RHS Yorkshire in Bloom Open Spaces Awards for their submission of the Friends’ Garden – the highest award in their category, which covers C6 Parks, Gardens, Cemeteries & Public Buildings. The aim of this category is to acknowledge the work that groups like the Friends put into improving the local environment, and awards are made based on a site visit by assessors from Yorkshire in Bloom.

Judges’ comments: The conversion from the original derelict site to the Friends’ Garden is an outstanding achievement. The plant selection is excellent as proved by the lack of distress in a difficult year. The natural methods of pest control are proving successful, with a natural balance having been achieved to maintain control. A cohesive and committed group of friends with a sense of direction and love both for the Friends’ Garden and Roundhay Park. The Friends’ are currently developing an extension to the garden. This area includes a new bench in memory of member Jon Vogler BEM (1939 - 2017) who was an active member of FoRP, leading working parties for many years.

The Friends’ Garden is located at the end of Canal Gardens on a site made available by Leeds Parks in 2001. The small woodland garden was designed and built by the Friends. Construction was carried out entirely by FoRP volunteers with some help from The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers and the garden was officially opened in July 2005.

The garden features in the 2019 Friends of Roundhay Park calendar, available from www.forp.org or their stall at Oakwood Market. All proceeds from the calendar will go toward protecting, preserving and improving the facilities and natural beauty of Roundhay Park for the enjoyment of all its users. The award was collected at a presentation at York Racecourse by FoRP members, Alison House, Judith Rothenberg and Carol Haughton (Secretary).

This year I have enjoyed my Dahlias, especially as they carried on flowering right through September. I particularly loved the dark starry flowered ‘Verrone’s Obsidian’.

Many crops need to be harvested before the first frosts arrive. These include carrots, beetroots, pumpkins and squashes. Tomatoes that have refused to ripen in the garden or greenhouse can be brought indoors where they can continue to turn red in the warmth. You can speed things up by putting them in a bowl with a ripe banana. When picking cabbages, try leaving the stalk stump in the ground and make a few cuts into the top with a knife, this can encourage a crop of tasty small leaves to appear.

If your plants are growing in a warm sheltered spot, you could apply a thick layer of mulch and leave the tubers in the ground, although it is safer to bring them in to avoid all risk of frost. They have to be lifted with great care to avoid damaging them, then the leaves and stalks cut off close to the tuber and any loose soil shaken off. Next, rinse them and leave to dry before putting them into boxes or pots of dry compost and leaving them in a frost-free place until planting time arrives again in May.

Some however have stiff stems and good structural seedheads, so I like to leave them in place to admire throughout the Winter. Finally there may well be some flowers around to enjoy – look out for lovely Asters, Nerines and Chrysanthemums.

THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST DIRECTED BY: DESIREE AKHAVAN STARRING: : CHLOË GRACE MORETZ, JOHN GALLAGHER JR, SASHA LANE, FORREST GOODLUCK, MARIN IRELAND, OWEN CAMPBELL, KERRY BUTLER, QUINN SHEPHARD, EMILY SKEGGS, MELANIE EHRLICH, JENNIFER EHLE CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 93 MINS 1993 is a foreign country: they do things differently there. No smart phones, no internet, no social media. It’s an even less connected world for Cameron Post, a teenager embarking on a brutal re-education - just because she’s gay.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post tells the story of an orphaned teen ousted by her family for having a romance with another girl. She’s quickly dispatched to God’s Promise, a religious conversion camp for kids ‘struggling with same sex attraction’. Initially the camp seems to offer a worthy and benign process of rehabilitation, but gradually Cameron questions the practical consequences of her spiritual therapy. In our enlightened times, the prospect of sending a child away for conversion therapy seems blatantly unethical. But it happened, and it still occurs today, despite the process being dismissed by medical bodies as harmful and ineffective. The Miseducation of Cameron Post examines this problematic phenomenon through the lens of the early Nineties - the recent past where sex education was a hurried formality, support and information was less accessible and the everpresent threat of HIV carried a death sentence. Desiree Akhavan’s adaption of the novel by Emily M Danforth is almost impatiently lean, offering a patchy assembly of key sequences and passing conversations. It lacks a steady narrative, yet its documentary-style of direction is compelling and succeeds in framing a series of coming-of-age vignettes between Cameron and her fellow inmates. This is the true focus of the film: a small collective of ill-fitting young people rejected by their relatives and social circles, yet brought together to form a new family and ethos of their own, albeit within a spiritual reform prison. The concept borrows much from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, combined with the adolescent angst and anarchy of The Breakfast Club. Both explore the impact of confinement and the importance of group bonding, whilst climaxing with a revolt against flawed authority figures. In John Hughes tradition we even experience an unruly scene with kids dancing to Eighties rock on tables.

The film’s central performance comes from pint-sized Chloë Grace Moretz, providing an arresting if understated portrayal of Cameron Post. It’s a purposefully centred and naturalistic display, which is the whole point of her character; highlighting the irony that she’s just a normal kid. It’s actually the misguided intentions of her healers that are perverse. The camp is run by Dr Lydia March, in a brilliant passive-aggressive turn from Jennifer Ehle. She’s assisted by her younger brother Reverend Rick, her first successful conversion case and one of the most intriguing studies in the film. John Gallagher Jr plays Rick as a genuinely well-intentioned if deluded guy, unknowingly demonstrating that he’s simply become conditioned, not cured, from his sexual orientation. He’s also a figure of ridicule, not least when a kid points out his Freddie Mercury moustache and earnestly whispers: “Can you believe he used to struggle with same sex attraction?”

The film offers plenty of dry gags like these, despite being a story beset with personal tragedy - peaking in a horrific breakdown which also acts as a dramatic catalyst for change. Yet despite some dark aspects, it’s also a genuinely optimistic experience. Akhavan avoids twisting the story into a polemic against religion or a grandstand for gay rights, choosing to simply evidence how times once were and how attitudes were destined to evolve. This is perhaps exemplified in a beautifully lingering shot of the group glancing back on their journey - implying they’re looking forward to the freedoms and values of the present day. The only weak points come in too little backstory. Cameron’s romance is glimpsed through flashbacks or dream sequences, whilst the whole trauma of losing her parents has little to no development outside of few offhand references. Whilst this does give the film a swift start off the blocks, it also fails to fully develop its lead character, who remains something of an enigma. A likely award-winner, The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a fascinating if uneven little film, which frames its subject with scrutiny and sensitivity. Damning of conversion therapy yet sympathetic to those trapped within its mechanisms, this is a study highlighting how far society has come, and for some, how far we still have to go.

Before 2014 Hannah was another voice in the busking collage that is Briggate on a sunny afternoon, but well-crafted songs, an engaging attitude, and a bit of social media savvy catapulted her (unexpectedly) to the top of the charts in Laos, Vietnam, and Mongolia, a feat she has repeated with her latest album ‘Red’ which went straight in at No.4 in the album charts in Malaysia. Playing in Leeds on her final UK tour date before heading to Europe, Hannah reveals that this is the only show she is nervous about. Her family and friends feature as subject matter in her new songs, alongside relationships, stalking, and the internet.

Hannah sings with confidence and control, drawing the listener in with every song before releasing them with the final cadence. Her instrumental technique is accompanied by her use of technology. Loop pedals, pads, and a second microphone enable her to make the most of every song. These techniques also appear on the album, with the single ‘Taboo’ taking on a very different feel from her usual acoustic sound. “The sounds in that song are still guitar, just more heavily processed", said Hannah. "To do that song acoustically would have been fine, but I feel like its been brought to life in the way that we’ve done it.” Hannah has stuck to her principles with the album, exercising complete creative control and

Beauty and The Beast at The Carriageworks This year’s Carriageworks pantomime is a funfilled production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’, which runs from 23rd November – 31st December. The leading role of Belle will be played by Sapphire Elia, best known for her roles as Mia Macey in ‘Emmerdale’ and Claudine Cameron in ‘Britannia High’. Joining her will be Leeds panto favourite Jez Edwards playing Philippe Philoppe. Jez is one of the most popular stars of the Carriageworks’ panto and this will be his tenth year at the theatre. “I’m proud to be asked back so many times”, said Jez. “Panto is all about family which is why I love it so much. My family Christmases used to be about going to the panto every year – so to

Younger Life Academic Success Propels Roundhay

A huge improvement in student progress is expected to put Roundhay School among the country’s best performers when league tables are announced later this year. According to Headteacher Matthew Partington, the predicted Progress 8 score of 0.38 should place it in the top 25% for progress. Last year, the school scored an average of 0.04 for Progress 8, the preferred Government measure which demonstrates the difference a school makes to the average student between Key Stages 2 - 4. “The progress score is a huge improvement and we were delighted by an excellent set of GCSE and sixth form results”, said Mr Partington, who joined Roundhay in January 2017. “This year’s sixth form matched the high academic standards we have set. We have outstanding A-level teaching – matching our Ofsted status.”

The school recently confirmed that 76% achieved grades four to nine in English and Maths and 53% achieved five and above in both, significantly above the national average. And, its A-level and vocational scores put it in the top quarter of all schools nationally. Barwick Girl Guides Need Volunteers Barwick Girlguiding is urgently looking for new volunteers to help it launch a brand new programme Girlguiding has undergone the biggest overhaul in its 110-year history, reflecting the diversity of girls and modern life in the 21st Century. There’s a set of 800 new badges and activities to help equip girls to take on the world, develop their interests, skills and confidence, accept new challenges, and have fun with their friends. Six themes – know myself, express myself, be well, have adventures, take action and skill for my future – the new programme includes badges such as mixology, campaigning, media critic, space and charities. Girls aged five to 14 attend Barwick Rainbows, Brownies and Guides and there is a waiting list!
