First of all, we’d like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a superb New Year! What a confusing year 2018 has been – we’re in, we’re out, now we’re shaking it all about! But throughout it all people have ploughed ahead, making the best of opportunities and enjoying the many wonderful events that have been on offer around Leeds. With January, once again people are launching in to New Year resolutions, expanding their horizons and swearing to get fit! World class guitarist Craig Ogden will perform a charity concert in aid of the Friends of the Leeds Centre for Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma at The Grove Methodist Church, Town Street, Horsforth, on Sunday 17th February at 3pm. Craig regularly appears at major venues and collaborates with top UK and international artists and ensembles. He has performed at major UK festivals and prestigious concert series all over the world. Life&Style New Postgraduate Courses Launched at Leeds Arts University Following the introduction of five new undergraduate degrees in 2018, Leeds Arts University is offering even more opportunities for creatives wishing to study at postgraduate level. Three new mastersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; degrees for students who want to advance their fine art, photography or graphic design practice will launch in 2019. The MA Photography course will encourage innovation and experimentation, whilst emphasising the need to find publications, exhibitions and digital platforms for their projects. The Fine Art MA will enable artists to develop a body of work ready for public exhibition, whilst acquiring advanced critical and analytical methods through a programme of group and individual sessions. Supported by a diverse team with research and practical interests, the MA Graphic Design course will explore the relationship between design-led practice, industry engagement and critical analysis. Students will be encouraged to source briefs and work with clients to build a body of self-directed work.

These new courses complement the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s existing postgraduate portfolio which includes an MA in Creative Practice, aimed at graduates and professionals who want to develop their practice in the creative and cultural industries. The University also offers an MA in Curation Practices covering the necessary skills and experience to work in curation across the education, arts, heritage and commercial sectors. Postgraduate students will be based in the new expansion on Blenheim Walk, which includes access to a dedicated research and reference library and a new postgraduate study suite.

Transport Historical Society Moves to Kirkstall The Leeds Transport Historical Society (LTHS) was originally formed by a group of transport enthusiasts in the 1950s, with the aim of saving examples of Leeds electric trams. Several of these are now in the fleet of the National Tramway Museum at Crich, Derbyshire.

The group, which recently moved its monthly meetings to Leeds Postal Sports Association Club just off Beecroft Street in Kirkstall. These meetings include talks and picture shows of general transport interest. Meetings start at 7.30pm and are open to non-members (£1).

The body of the last known Leeds horse tram, No.107, built in 1898 for the Headingley route before it was reconstructed for the heavier electric trams, was discovered in use as a garden shed. The Society acquired it and meticulously restored it to original condition before moving it to join its fellow trams at Crich.

In addition, the LTHS has published a number of books, notably a five-volume history of Leeds Transport, compiled and written by Jim Soper. As well as horse, steam and electric trams, this covers stage coaches and buses and uniquely details the history of turnpike roads around the city. Other recent publications include an album of transport-related postcards and a book of early Leeds photographs transformed into carefully researched colour.

New Year, New Career Leeds Social Care Provider Looking for New Talent The number of people aged 65 and over requiring roundthe-clock care is projected to rise by over a third to more than one million during the next 20 years. In order to care for all these people, the adult social care workforce will need to increase by 40 per cent (650,000 jobs) by 2035. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

Ina Kitson Clark (nee Georgina Bidder) (1864-1954) Campaigner, Activist, Artist When Ina Kitson Clark was given an honorary doctorate by Leeds University in 1928 she was described as a practical idealist with the active spirit of the crusader, the gift of stirring speech, and a woman’s power to take direct action. The award recognised the important part she had played in the city’s life during her fifty years in Leeds, in improving infant welfare, in furthering women’s rights, and in art and culture.

She came from a talented background, her grandfather an eminent civil engineer, her father a wealthy and successful London QC. Family life at Ravensbury Park in Surrey fostered her interest in art, archaeology, literature, and social issues. She studied at the Slade, travelled abroad, and worked with the Kyrle Society which aimed to ‘bring beauty to the people’, through green spaces and artistic decoration (her forte) of workhouses, hospitals, schools, in the slums. A founder member of the National Union of Women Workers, promoting equal rights, she was a modern woman – look at her bobbed hair in this era of lavish tresses! In 1893 on a voyage to Naples she met Edwin Kitson Clark, the classically educated engineer who managed Kitson’s great Airedale Foundry in Leeds. Over the next four years they exchanged a multitude of letters (still surviving – a lost art now?). A long, slow courtship led to marriage in 1897 and a deep and enduring partnership. So to Leeds. After a period in Hyde Terrace, she and Edwin moved in 1904 with their young family to ‘Meanwoodside’, a fine house in wooded surroundings (now Meanwood Park). It was to be their home for the rest of their lives. Ina soon found her feet. She joined the influential Yorkshire Ladies Council of Education, and for 21 years was their Hon. Secretary. This formidable group of women had pioneered initiatives in education, health and welfare and now focussed on the alarming

rise in infant mortality: by 1900 it had peaked at 163 deaths in the first year of life for every 1000 live births. Coincidentally recruitment for the Boer War revealed how many men were unfit through childhood disease and malnutrition. In Leeds the problems were acute in the heavily industrialised areas where one in five babies died early and stunted growth and limbs deformed by rickets (‘Leeds legs’) were commonplace. Ina attended conferences, visited welfare schemes in Denmark and Belgium, and led the campaign for infant clinics in the most deprived areas. In 1909 the first ‘Babies Welcome’ clinic was opened in a house donated by Henry Barran: mothers could have their babies weighed, get advice, see a doctor – and chat over a cup of tea. Ina was President for the next 19 years and saw the clinics multiply and a children’s hospital established at Wyther. She had duties too of course as Edwin’s wife: balls, garden parties, civic societies – he was a distinguished man. But she still found time for her painting and sculpting, exhibited regularly at the Leeds Fine Arts Club, and was its President for an astonishing 40 years, promoting the role of art in the city’s life. was another pleasure – poetry and plays, some later published, some written for the Meanwood WI which she founded in 1917. She remained active on the National Women’s Council, supported a local Loan Fund to help women into training, and a campaign for more women in local government. A member of the Leeds Women’s Suffrage Society, she signed the 1907 Leeds petition and in 1918, with Edwin, spoke to urge women to use their hard-won vote. In the First World War Edwin went to the Front (Lt. Col.), but after being wounded was based relatively safely at Harfleur. At home Ina organised supplies for the troops and had the job of finding lodgings for incoming women munitions workers. Post war she was a delegate to the International Women’s Conference at the

Hague promoting international understanding, and embraced a number of official roles and causes – the ‘go-to’ woman for committees and appeals, an effective organiser and a powerful speaker. In 1943, in the midst of another war, Edwin became seriously ill: he wrote her a last loving letter before his death. She remained at Meanwoodside, still active, painting and exhibiting, until finally a fall led to her death in 1954, aged 89. There was an outpouring of appreciation for all she had achieved in her long life in Leeds. Meanwoodside and its grounds were bought by the Council for £8500 for a public park, with the house as a possible trailside museum, but the plan was rejected and the house demolished. A plaque records Ina and Edwin and their ‘unstinted service to Leeds’.

Arts&Culture Magdalene Odundo: The Journey of Things Magdalene Odundo OBE is one of the world's most esteemed artists working in ceramics. This major exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield, which runs from 16th February – 2nd June 2019, will bring together more than 50 of Odundo’s works, which will be shown alongside a selection of objects that she has chosen to reveal the diverse range of creative traditions that have informed the development of her work.

Odundo’s desire to learn about vernacular crafts has taken her across the globe to Europe, Africa, Asia and Central America. This journeying has inspired her unique visual language – her hand-built forms are often large, asymmetrical, and with dynamic silhouettes that often conjure up the human body. The vessels are burnished rather than glazed and fired in ways that create distinctive surfaces of vibrant orange, velvety black, or a dramatic interplay of the two.

Designed by internationally architect Farshid Moussavi OBE, the exhibition will place Odundo’s work at the heart of a constellation of objects, including British studio pottery by Hans Coper and Lucy Rie; ancient vessels from Greece and Egypt; historic ceramics from Africa, Asia and Central America; ritual sculpture and objects from across the African continent; Elizabethan costume and textiles; as well as contemporary objects, like a large work by artist El Anatsui. Odundo’s work will also be brought into dialogue with sculptures by 20th century artists like Degas, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Auguste Rodin, which highlight the importance of the human body as a reference in her work. “This will be the second in a series of exhibitions inviting individuals from creative fields to work with us and our collection to explore new ways of looking at histories of art”, said Simon Wallis, Director of The Hepworth Wakefield. “It is an honour to be working with Magdalene Odundo and Farshid Moussavi on this ambitious presentation, which will draw on many of the most significant collections in the UK, including those of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, The Fitzwilliam Museum and the Horniman Museum and Gardens.”

With the support of patron and ‘choral wizard’ Suzi Digby (Lady Eatwell OBE), Voices Yorkshire is set to become one of the largest and most exciting choral festivals in the UK.

Yorkshire College Launches Choral Festival The Yorkshire College of Music and Drama is launching a new, Yorkshire-wide choral festival in 2019. ‘Voices Yorkshire’ takes its inspiration from the hugely successful Leeds Triennial Choral Festival, which ran from 1858 to 1985, and will celebrate the diversity and excellence of choirs across Yorkshire today. Its aims to boost local communities through the power of music and a culture of inclusion, support and pride. The festival will feature a large number of choral performances across Yorkshire throughout the year and will culminate in a grand finale at Leeds Town Hall on 14th September 2019. A new piece of music will be commissioned especially for the occasion.

“For many years, Leeds was a hugely influential city in the music world”, said Tim Knight, Choral Director, Yorkshire College of Music and Drama. “Queen Victoria herself was at the first ever Triennial Music Festival which celebrated the opening of the Town Hall in 1858. We have hundreds of wonderful choirs across our region and we thought it was time to put Yorkshire back on the choral world stage with an updated version of the old festival." The first event of the festival - Sing Day Leeds - is planned for 26th January 2019, when a diverse range of choirs will perform at venues across the city. For Spring/Summer 2019, Leeds Playhouse continues to create world-class theatre, sharing Yorkshire tales and thrilling dramas.

“We’ve had an exceptional few months at the Playhouse”, said James Brining, Artistic Director. “We opened the Pop-Up theatre and collaborated with partner venues across the city and beyond. We’ve toured work around Leeds libraries and schools, broadcast new plays on BBC Radio Leeds, and welcomed thousands of people into our temporary Pop-Up space. We’ve been recognised by the National Dementia Care Awards for our work with people living with dementia and won the White Rose Awards for Arts and Culture.

“Looking ahead to the next six months we’re continuing to produce work both on our Pop-Up stage, and in the City Region, as momentum builds towards our main building re-opening in Autumn 2019.” Leeds Playhouse’s Spring/Summer 2019 Season includes: Barry Hines' story of Billy and his kestrel ‘Kes’ returns to the Playhouse (25 Jan – 16 Feb). This poetic, heartfelt adaptation by Robert Alan Evans sees actors Jack Lord and Lucas Button bring this heart-warming story of friendship to life. Gbolahan Obisesan directs Kiza Deen in Debbie Tucker Green’s ‘random’ (4 – 16 Feb). In this remarkably vivid and observational one-woman play, a family’s world is turned upside down when they are caught up in a catastrophe that will change their lives for ever ‘Dinner 18:55’ (22 – 23 Feb) is a beautifully constructed, intergenerational performance led by members of The Playhouse’s Older People and Youth programmes. It allows the community performers to explore their similarities and differences as they share a meal. Directed by Maggie De Ruyck, Playhouse Older People's Programme Manager. Leeds Playhouse Associate Director Amy Leach directs Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ (1 – 30 March) with Tessa Parr in the title role. The contemporary staging is designed by Hayley Grindle and sees a young person struggling to understand her identity, whilst being swept up in loss and grief in an unforgiving world.

The Playhouse’s redevelopment project will see the building transformed, with a new city-facing entrance, improved access, and the addition of a new studio theatre space, the Bramall Rock Void. The newly renovated theatre is due to reopen in Autumn 2019.

The mysterious and fabulously wealthy Phileas Fogg makes an appearance in ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ in April (9 – 28) directed by Alexander Ferris, Leeds Playhouse Director of Creative Engagement. Arts&Culture A Season of Creative Collaborations Opera North’s new season features collaborations with two other leading Leeds arts organisations – Phoenix Dance Theatre and the Leeds Playhouse – and presents a bewitching coming-of-age adventure, a tempestuous tragedy, and a double bill of ballet and wickedly funny opera. A new production of Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ opens the season with Leeds Playhouse Artistic Director James Brining directing opera for the first time. The cast includes South African soprano, Vuvu Mpofu as Pamina and Chinese/Australian tenor Kang Wang as Tamino. Samantha Hay takes on the role of Queen of the Night, with Gavan Ring appearing as Papageno the bird-catcher. A specially-devised, shortened version has been created for schools, providing young people from the age of seven with the chance to experience their first opera. It will be performed at a special schools’ matinee. Younger family members can enjoy The Mini Magic Flute, an interactive 30minute retelling of the story, performed by a trio of singers and an accordionist. ‘Katya Kabanova’, Janáček’s wildly beautiful tale of temptation, passion and guilt in a smallminded community follows. Katya does her best to conform to society’s expectations, but temptation proves impossible to resist. As her world unravels, Janáček’s music captures the tension and barely suppressed eroticism.

Conductor Sian Edwards makes her Opera North debut and the cast includes Stephanie Corley as Katya, Harold Meers as her lover, Heather Shipp as the formidable mother-in-law, and Andrew Kennedy as the spineless Tichon. Completing the season is a dance/opera double bill created in association with Phoenix Dance Theatre. Choreographed by Haitian choreographer Jeanguy Saintus, this new version of Stravinsky's ‘The Rite of Spring’ will be performed by the Phoenix ensemble with the full Orchestra of Opera North playing the unmistakable modernist score. It focuses on the crushing power of nature, the relentless growth of capitalism and technology, and the inevitable fate of the sacrificial victim. ‘The Rite of Spring’ is paired with Puccini’s short operatic comedy ‘Gianni Schicchi’. Scheming relatives gather round the deathbed of a rich man, each laying claim to a chunk of his fortune, before they make the questionable decision to call in local conman Gianni Schicchi for help. Based on an episode in Dante’s Inferno, Puccini’s mini masterpiece is rich with vivid characterisation and colourful music. Richard Burkhard sings the title role, supported by Tereza Gevorgyan as Lauretta, Diego Silva as Rinuccio and LeahMarian Jones as Zita. The season opens at Leeds Grand Theatre with The Magic Flute on Saturday 19th January.

Headingley Hub is Now Officially Open! Headingley Community Hub was officially opened on 26th November. The Library had been operating since last Spring, but the Hub official opening was delayed until the full range of services was in place – these now include Headingley Post Office. In addition, there is the usual access to computers and staff at The Hub are always happy to help those struggling to use them, especially when trying to access Council services. IT training sessions are run there too.

The Hub also plays host to numerous advisors, for example, in family law, finance, (Leeds City Credit Union and Money Buddies), housing, employment (Job Shop & Remploy), volunteering (Voluntary Action Leeds), and Adult Social care, as well as hosting monthly Councillors’ surgeries. The Headingley Hub is open seven days a week, opening at 9am every day except Sunday (11am). Closing times vary – usually 5.30pm, 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 3pm on Sunday. Headingley Councillors, Neil Walshaw and Jonathan Pryor did the honours and Headingley Rotary Club were on hand with lots of information about their activities in the area and further afield.

The famous Otley Run pub crawl has inspired a new book by Leeds writer, Joe Williams. ‘An Otley Run’, based on the colourful characters encountered along the route, will certainly resonate with anyone who has ever attempted it, and locals who are all too familiar with it. The idea is to have a drink in every pub on or close to Otley Road, starting at Woodies in Far Headingley and finishing at The Dry Dock. “When I first moved to Leeds in the 1990s, the Otley Run was something only students did”, said Williams. “Since then I’ve seen it grow into a huge event. There are more pubs and a lot more people, many coming from all over the country for stag dos, hen parties, all kinds of celebrations, every weekend. “The other big change is the fancy dress. When I was a student, no-one dressed up for the Otley Run, nowadays nearly everyone does. If you go to the shops in Headingley on a Saturday afternoon, there’s a good chance you’ll bump into the Spice Girls or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That’s what made me want to write the book. I wondered

what stories these people had to tell and decided to create one.” The book is in the form of a verse novella which tells that story over the course of fifteen pubs. It is published by Half Moon Books, an independent poetry publisher based in Otley, who also published Joe’s first book, the poetry collection ‘Killing the Piano’. CommunityNews Headlingley & Oakwood Farmers’ Markets Nominated for FRA Awards Leeds can be justly proud of its North Leeds farmers’ markets in Horsforth, Oakwood and Headingley – with the last two currently going head to head in the national Farm Retail Association Awards. Headingley market was set up over twelve years ago with the aim of providing good quality, local food to a community that had lost a lot of its local shops. It is a very mixed area – students of course, but many families and older, isolated people too. Headingley Development Trust, which set the market up, wanted to help improve Headingley for everyone and the market was a key way to do this.

Rotary Club ‘Phoenix’ Opens in Leeds City Centre

Rotary International, formed over 100 years ago to create lasting change in local communities and across the globe, recently started a new group in Leeds called ‘Phoenix’. The new, diverse club, made up of residents and business people, has an average membership age of just 34 and comes from a mix of sectors, including accountancy, public relations, recruitment, and international trade. The club exists to support the Leeds community and has chosen Zest Health for Life as its charity for the year. Members support the charity through fundraising initiatives including dragon boat racing, cookery classes and taking part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge.

Torn from Home: Leeds Holocaust Memorial Day

The Leeds Holocaust Memorial Day civic remembrance event is on Sunday 27th January 2019, 2pm at Leeds Town Hall. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Torn from Home’. It commemorates the millions who were murdered in the Holocaust by Nazi persecution, and in subsequent genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda and Darfur, in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today. 2019 also marks the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. To mark this, one of the speakers will be Appolinaire Kageruka, who will tell his story of being torn from his home during the genocide. He was 24 years old and working as a teacher, when it began in 1994. He was a Tutsi – the tribe being ethnicity targeted. Before the Genocide, he had helped to pay the school fees of one of his students and it was this student whose family hid him, helping him to escape and survive.

Appolinaire’s mother, father, brothers and sisters were all killed. The only item he was able to save was a radio, which kept him up to date on what was happening in his country. After liberation he sought refuge to the UK. Today he lives in Coventry where he heads the Rwandan Community Association. The Leeds remembrance service will include ‘The Library’ by Playhouse Youth, a performance that presents stories from real people affected by the Holocaust – stories of injustice and loss, and stories that restore hope. There will also be music by Kolot Hazichoron (Voices of Hope) choir singing traditional Jewish songs; a reading of the seven statements of commitment with candle lighting; and a traditional Hebrew memorial prayer sung by the President of Bradford Synagogue, Rudi Leavor, BEM. The Rotary Club of Headingley Has Had a Busy Year In the last year, The Rotary Club of Headingley has supported three special projects: Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre at St. James’s Hospital, for which it raised almost £6,000. The topping-out ceremony to mark the completion of the building shell took place in November and it is expected to be completed in May. St Peter’s CE (A) Primary School - Involvement with the school has grown over the last eight years and three club members are now governors. Members also listen to children read and help in the school garden (the new greenhouse was financed by Rotary). St. Peter’s is an area of social deprivation. Over 30 languages are spoken by the children, some of whom have special educational needs. The school identified the growing number of pupils with communication problems, including some

on the autism spectrum. The club has raised over £1,200 to furnish a multi-sensory room, considered to be the ideal environment to help meet their needs. Sylvia Wright Day Centre in Southern India - The club raised $10,000 for a hydro-therapy pool for severely disabled children, with further funds raised through Rotary bringing the total to $35,000. By the time HS2 is up and running in 2033, the growth in employment forecast in the city region is almost 150,000 new full-time jobs, 25,000 of which will be in Leeds city centre. At the moment no commitment has been made to develop a mass transit system and no choice of transport mode is specified by the report.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority Redevelopment of Leeds General Infirmary West Yorkshire Combined Authority has been discussing our connectivity needs, including the possible requirement for a mass transit system. Previously, it identified key routes and the communities around them that would require improved transport connections to access future opportunities. The first job is to identify which locations require these connections in the coming decades, quantify future demand on the key routes against known capacity, consider the role that mass transit could play and consult with the public.

A pre-application planning presentation for a redevelopment at the LGI has been delivered to the city’s Plans Panel. The former nurses’ home and other buildings will be demolished and a new, state-of-theart adult and children’s services building created. Internal changes to The Jubilee Wing will improve the flow of patients through the Emergency/Major Trauma centre. A new multi-storey car park will have around 450 new spaces and would be in addition to the existing car park which

has 709. Along with other parking areas, this will result in a total of 1,500 spaces. Some of the older buildings are not formally listed buildings, however the developer has clarified with Historic England the extent of the defined listings within the hospital campus and as a result the Corson-designed Outpatients Department has been defined as Grade II listed.

Leeds By Example A trial project has been launched around the collection of recyclable food and drink packaging consumed on the go. This concentrates on litter in the city centre and is being run in partnership with Hubbub. It aims to change behaviours and raise awareness. There are 20 new yellow onstreet recycling bins, four recycle reward machines in Kirkgate Market, Beckett University and Trinity Leeds, with two more to come, and coffee cup recycling points in key council locations across the city centre.

Residents Turn Out in Force for Meanwood Lights Meanwood residents came out in force to watch as Meanwood’s Christmas lights and the lights on its first Christmas tree were switched on. The 18 Christmas display lights were all individually designed either by school children or local businesses. Hosted by a boisterous John Anderson, it was Reverend Kingsley Dowling, retiring parish priest of Meanwood Holy Trinity Church, who actually did the honours of turning the lights on. North Leeds Community Singers, students from Allerton High and Meanwood Church of England Schools all performed with a band.

...Ten Vicars, six organists and a myriad of curates and churchwardens later... St Chad's was dedicated as a parish church to serve the community of Far Headingley on 14th January 1868. To mark the end of its 150th anniversary celebrations as a church, they are holding a closing celebration at the church on Sunday 6th January at 9.30am.

In November, Wharfedale Male Voice Choir was invited to perform a concert for the residents of Adlington House in Otley, as part of their Autumn/ Winter programme. The selection of music was put together by the Choir’s Musical Director, Mr. Paul Hurst, with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Brenda Cromwell.

Rt Revd Paul Slater, Bishop of Kirkstall, will be presiding and preaching, and their Patron, Lord Grimthorpe, will attend with his wife Lady Grimthorpe. It will be a confirmation service as part of the main Sunday parish communion.

Compered by Ken Bellwood, a founder member of the Choir, the concert included a wide variety of songs from shows and hits from across the years, interspersed with commentary, musical interludes and monologues.

The parish also bids farewell to Revd Tom Lusty, the tenth Vicar of St Chad's, as he prepares for ministry as parish priest of Bramhope.

The Choir returned to Otley in early December to sing at Teal Beck, where they performed an entirely new arrangement of songs and carols.

Everyone is welcome. If you are able to stay on for lunch in the parish centre following the service, please could you bring some food to share!

Peregrine falcons are among our most amazing and iconic birds of prey. An often-cited fact is that a peregrine, when swooping down onto its prey, can achieve speeds of over 200 mph, making it the world’s fastest bird. Like other falcons, it has long pointed wings and a long tail. It is blue-grey above, and its wings and head are dark blue. Perhaps its clearest distinguishing feature is its long black ‘moustache’, which stands out against its white face. Its main food is medium-sized birds such as waders, pigeons and small ducks, which it chases and attacks either from below or from high above, swooping down with folded wings to increase momentum. Peregrines nest on crags, rock faces, sea cliffs and quarries, and

increasingly on tall buildings in towns. This year a pair nested on the Parkinson tower of the University of Leeds, and for the first time successfully fledged three young. There are plenty of pigeons there to provide food for the young, and the tower is a safe and relatively undisturbed nest site. In the UK as a whole, there are around 1,500 breeding pairs. Unfortunately, they are still persecuted – birds are killed illegally to prevent predation of game birds and racing pigeons, and eggs and chicks are sometimes taken for falconry.

Time to take stock I had to empty my garden shed recently to carry out some repairs, so out came a lifetime of tools, some of which were blunt, badly designed, too heavy or not right for me or the garden. Replacing some and getting rid of others has made gardening much more of a pleasure.

Since we all come in different shapes and sizes, it is good to know that the same is true of gardening tools. Short people don’t have to put up with using great long spades and forks, and people prone to back ache don’t have to struggle with heavy solid ones.

Gloves, kneeling mat, spade and fork, hand trowel and hand fork, a pair of secateurs and a pair of loppers are the tools I use all the time – and although there is plenty of other useful kit available, what you use most often are the things that need to be comfortable and easy to use.

Spades, for example, are available in various sizes. They should ideally have a sharp blade, and be both strong and lightweight. Forged steel is stronger but stainless steel can be much lighter and cuts through the soil more easily. Many people, myself included, find a border spade much easier to use than a full sized digging spade. Junior spades are also a very good choice for smaller framed people and are especially popular with many older gardeners who appreciate the light weight and petite size. When choosing secateurs, right or lefthanded models are available in many sizes so try them for size and comfort before you buy. I have both bypass secateurs (these work like scissors and make a neat, accurate cut) and anvil secateurs (which work by crushing the stem against a sharp blade and better for cutting tough stems) for different types of pruning. Ratchet models are also available for both types and make cutting much easier.

A nuclear winter is coming: As the Soviet Union exerts control of western Iran, the USA engages troops to protect western interests. When the British government supports a European offensive, key locations across the country become potential targets for nuclear retaliation. One of these is Sheffield, the setting for a suburban story which explodes into a postapocalyptic horror.

The tapes were obtained by Panorama in 1980 and later helped to inspire a BAFTA-winning television drama which shocked the nation.

Barry Hines’ kitchen sink drama begins as a deliberately relaxed study of working-class life, exploring the relationship between teenager Jimmy (Reece Dinsdale) and his pregnant, middle-class girlfriend Ruth (Karen Meagher). Their plans to secure a home and marry are set against escalating tensions in the Middle East, subtly reported through media soundbites and newspaper headlines. We’re also given insight into civilian preparations for war, as the city rounds up an emergency operations team in the event of central government’s destruction. Inevitably, a nuclear bomb is dropped on Sheffield — knocking out communications, atomising everyone close at hand, flattening buildings and fatally irradiating those beyond. The war is over in a matter of moments and the delicate threads which bind society are severed. Mankind is reduced to a diaspora of scavengers and looters, striving to survive a radioactive winter without food or shelter.

It’s a contemptable fate which is fearlessly realised on screen. Key statistics are captioned with a stonecold commentary from Paul Vaughan — the authoritative voice of numerous Horizon documentaries. The true effects of nuclear war are graphically

shown, evidencing the strike and fallout through monochrome stills of desolate landscapes and mutilated casualties. The pragmatic, journalistic approach ensures you’re never a comfortable, dislocated viewer; the events feel real and the drama becomes pure documentary reality. In order to create an atmosphere of authenticity, director Mick Jackson cast relative unknowns and newcomers. Among an ensemble of now recognisable faces are Rita May, Emmerdale's Steve Halliwell, Casualty's Jane Hazlegrove and stage and screen star Reece Dinsdale in one of his earliest TV leads. The performances are relaxed, almost improvised and shot with a run-andgun feel, utilising natural light for a documentary realism. The drama is often framed through intimate closeups, with a focus on familiar domestic imagery which is rapidly cross-cut with cinematic shots of destruction and anarchy. Whilst Threads sets out to heed the sobering, long-term impact of a nuclear exchange, it ultimately damns Britain’s total lack of civil defence. The Protect & Survive programme, which is signposted throughout the film, is exposed as a completely futile gesture. Uncompromised scenes of panic and suffering prove that any attempt at protection will, at best, simply prolong the agony of those unlucky enough to survive. In short, we learn that whatever the initial blast doesn’t kill, the radiation will in good time. There are no winners in a nuclear war.

Simply Media has now presented the film in high definition for the first time, working from the original BBC 16mm prints to offer a heightened experience far beyond the quality available in 1984. The Blu-ray features a widescreen presentation of the film, ably showcasing the scale of its visual effects and sound, which will impress and shock a whole new generation of viewers. Einstein believed that if the next war was nuclear, the one after that would be armed with sticks and stones. Threads perfectly illustrates this fact — without political grandstanding or optimistic romance — walking us through mankind’s potential missteps to self-destruction. After 35 years, Threads has lost none of its explosive force; it is necessarily challenging, gruelling, unyielding and perhaps the most important drama the BBC has ever made. We owe it to ourselves to see it, share it and continue to learn from it.

SOFAR Sounds: More Living Rooms Should Have Music! SOFAR Sounds host live music events in intimate settings, often people’s living rooms. There is no ‘headliner’, and guests sign up in advance, only discovering where the event is 48 hours before the event, and who is playing on arrival. The events are seated, and audience members are expected to listen respectfully in silence. SOFAR Sounds (Songs From A Room) specialise in secret and intimate music events. Run mostly by volunteers, the organisation began in London and has since spread to more than 400 cities worldwide. They recently hosted an event at Eiger Studios in Hunslet, representing the latest ambitions of this small but determined team and is now seeking bigger venues, performances, and crowds, while keeping the atmosphere intimate. At this event, sofas were dragged in and cushions strewn about. Guests had been advised to bring blankets and pillows, anything to make the place feel a little more like a friend’s front room. Whilst there is a bar, it stopped serving once the music started. People sat and listened. The line-up featured local electronic act Denton Thrift; Lydia Evangeline, an acoustic singer songwriter from Brighton; and an Afrobeat band from Hull called Bud Sugar. Denton Thrift, an electronic four piece of University of Leeds students, has already released an EP, ‘Sight’, which is definitely worth a listen.

Lydia Evangeline worked well in the laid back, friendly atmosphere, singing about the experiences of her early 20s, love, loss, and adventure – she swears she isn’t as depressing as her songs make her sound! This was only her second time in Leeds and one suspects she has found many new fans. Bud Sugar was backed by the melodic powerhouse that is Brass Elephants. With fluid basslines, punchy brass, and hypnotic synthesised beats, this group managed to motivate people to actually get up and dance! They sang of their passion for videography, social media, and about identity – most passionately about a band trip to Gambia tracing family history (check out the video ‘Gambia’ on YouTube). The band uses SOFAR events to find new audiences and test the waters in new towns. They are confident they will be back in Leeds soon. Howard Assembly Room’s Tenth Anniversary Season Opera North celebrates The Howard Assembly Room’s tenth anniversary in the New Year with a season of events embodying the venue’s eclectic programming and intimate atmosphere, headed by five flagship concerts featuring exuberant ensembles, world music legends and the return of favourite artists. Malian rockers Songhoy Blues return on 25th January, having accumulated a slew of awards, a collaboration with Iggy Pop and ecstatic reviews for their second album. And, their compatriot Bassekou Kouyaté, is back with his latest album ‘Miri’ on 26th January. Senegalese master kora player Seckou Keita has been working to translate the complexity and energy of his music for

an ensemble of western instruments, as part of Opera North and the PRS Foundation’s Resonance programme, and the results will be heard for the first time on 15th January.

Volunteers Sought for Osteoarthritis Research A Leeds University research team is looking for volunteers aged 50+ with hip/knee osteoarthritis who would like to help older people manage their osteoarthritis better. Volunteers will be trained in osteoarthritis self-management, as well as peer-mentoring skills before being paired with a study participant (an older person with osteoarthritis). They will work together on an individualised support programme for a period of eight weeks with a view to building skills and confidence in osteoarthritis self-management.

The charity The Public Health Collaboration (PHC) is dedicated to informing and implementing healthy decisions for better public health.

Peer mentors will be supported throughout by a dedicated research team. Travel expenses will be reimbursed and a token payment offered for each completed support session. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a rewarding programme that will benefit both themselves and others.

Recently, in the run up to Remembrance Sunday, the school installed eight life size soldier silhouettes on the school fields. In a moving ceremony, the children took part in a silent procession on the fields and placed poppies they had made at the foot of each soldier. “We are very proud of our children, they had worked hard making their poppies, writing poems and discussing family members who had been involved in the war”, said Helen Stiles, Headteacher. “We also remembered the role women played during the war and all those who are still affected by warfare.”
