ADVERTISING Back for its fourth year, Chapel FM’s literary festival ‘Writing on Air’ returns from 21st – 24th March. It will present international and Yorkshire-based writers, poets, and performers, who will gather at Chapel FM to create original radio and live performances celebrating the spoken word. This year’s theme, ‘Hearing the Voice’, is inspired by Durham University’s research project of the same name. Bringing together around 200 writers, poets, performers and community members, the festival will feature over 60 events exploring the subject through panel discussions, radio dramas, readings, outside broadcasts, documentaries and conversations. Responses to the theme range from challenging the concept that ‘hearing voices’ is a sign of mental illness; exploring who speaks for us; whose voices are loudest in our society; and how do we find our own voices. Highlights include:

Life&Style Yorkshire Choice Awards - Recognising Remarkable Individuals

The Yorkshire Choice Awards have provided an opportunity to recognise the efforts of individuals in our local communities. Last year, nearly half a million people voted for their nominees – showing just how much their work and dedication were appreciated. The awards recognise those who have shown courage and determination and include ‘Inspirational Individual’, ‘Young Achiever of the Year’ and ‘Volunteer of the Year’. A vital fundraiser for local charities, the Awards have raised almost £30,000 for local charities via sponsorship, ticket sales and online auctions since their inception three years ago. This year’s event will support Bethany’s Smile. Set up by Bethany Hare when she was just 12 years old. The charity raises funds to help families with children with disabilities to purchase wheelchairs, laptops, desks etc. but her ultimate goal is to build Smile Cottage, where families will be able to spend quality time together when faced with the news of a short life expectancy.

The Yorkshire Choice Awards are proud to support a charity set up by such an inspirational young woman. Bethany has set up one of the few charities where every penny goes to the cause. It epitomises all that the awards stand for. The annual awards will be presented at a blacktie event at Centenary Pavilions, Leeds United on 6th April 2019. The Rotary Club of Roundhay’s eighth Annual North Leeds Charity Beer Festival is on 5th/6th April. Held at North Leeds Cricket Club, Old Park Road, Roundhay, it will feature 36 beers from nine Yorkshire breweries and eight gins, all produced in God’s own County, and fizz will be available for the first time. There will be some great music from Leeds talent, including new acts and firm favourites from previous years. A full line-up and approximate performance times can be found on the website. The club bar will be open for additional drinks and non-alcoholic alternatives. Plus, lovely homemade samosas and pies and peas will be available from the kitchen. Children can enjoy the dedicated play area and child friendly snacks.

Funds raised from previous beer festivals have made it possible for the Rotary Club of Roundhay to back projects in the community and beyond – the Lakeside Café playground was one such project. The club also installed two defibrillators situated outside Moortown Health Centre and Oakwood Surgery. Through the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Ocean Sailing programme, Roundhay Rotary supports young people, giving them opportunities to develop their skills and broaden their horizons. The Club has been involved in organising writing, music and technology competitions too. It is also quick to help those affected by earthquakes, tsunamis and natural disasters by sending emergency shelter and equipment to purify water.

Leeds Mencap is looking for people with a competitive streak to take on its corporate challenge this Spring. Now in its sixth year, the fundraising challenge returns with a new name – Accumulator Challenge - and a new format that the charity hopes will appeal to the Leeds business community. Companies who would like to demonstrate their creative and entrepreneurial skills simply have to raise as much money as possible from an initial £30 stake during a 30-day period in either March or April. Teams should be made up of at least four people and larger companies can pit several teams against each other, if they fancy some friendly workplace rivalry. In previous years, the challenge has seen teams organising curry lunches, office tuck shops, sporting tournaments, quiz nights and many other events to raise cash for Leeds Mencap – an independent charity that helps to

improve the lives and opportunities of children and young adults with learning disabilities. “Taking part in the challenge raises much-needed funds for local people with learning disabilities and gives us a fantastic opportunity to improve teambuilding skills and fulfil corporate social responsibility aims”, said Jonathan Winston, Managing Partner Winston Solicitors LLP, who were crowned winners for the second time last year. “Taking part in the challenge is an annual highlight for our company. Since it opened in 1909, Swarthmore has always been known as a place for open debate and challenge, providing people in Leeds with an opportunity to speak up on issues of social injustice. By holding these debates, the Centre is looking to bring some of that original philosophy back and offer an open and inclusive opportunity for public debate on topical issues. The first debate in January was on Universal Credit, proposing that: “the implementation of the Universal Credit System is fundamentally flawed, and therefore the system needs to be reviewed to ensure that all people are treated humanely.” There was a range of informed speakers, with a vote at the beginning and end and an opportunity for audience questions. Leeds Older People’s Forum is looking for volunteers to help them evaluate their National Lottery funded Time to Shine programme and its effects on reducing loneliness and social isolation in older people. Over-55s are being invited to volunteer to train as peer evaluators, visiting older people’s projects and talking with participants to find out how well the project has worked for them. It is hoped that by using ‘Volunteer Listeners’ people will feel comfortable to share their experiences, both good and bad. “We are able to collect facts and figures”, said Hillary Wadsworth, Time to Shine programme manager, “but we also want to make sure we are not missing the

important human aspects of people's experiences.” Across the city, projects help older people to get out and make new friends in a variety of ways – by offering them new experiences, or simply giving them the confidence to join a group by going along with them for the first time. In North Leeds projects are being run by MAECare (Moor Allerton Elderly Care) and MHA Community Support. Following training, volunteers will talk to older people, guided by a series of prompts. Their stories will be written up and shared anonymously with Care Connect (University of Sheffield), who are evaluating the Time to Shine programme.

Volunteers must be able to attend one of the training sessions in March (12th or 21st March) and be able to get to locations across Leeds, starting in May. They should be able to have a couple of these conversations every month, which will give a fascinating insight into the many projects being run with older people across Leeds as part of the Time to Shine National Lottery Funded research programme. Funding to Facilitate Clean Air Zone Leeds City Council has been directed by the Government to reduce air pollution to within legal limits in the shortest possible time. Regardless of where we live, working in Leeds means that we are all affected by the city’s air pollution on a daily basis. It damages our lungs, reduces life expectancy and worsens the symptoms of asthma. In fact, it is the biggest environmental risk to our health. So, the Council is committed to:

· Delivering the biggest charging

Clean Air Zone outside London from 6th January 2020.

· An ambition to fully transition the

Council’s fleet to electric or ultra-low emission vehicles by 2025.

· Working

with West Yorkshire Combined Authority to install at least 88 new charge points for electric vehicles, including more than 30 in Leeds.

· Taking action to reduce the number of

with innovators to research and develop clean air technology that can be used in Leeds and beyond. Leeds City Council has been given ministerial approval and more than £29 million by the government to implement a Clean Air Charging Zone and support businesses affected. The Zone will tackle pollution by encouraging owners of the worst polluting buses, coaches, HGVs, taxis and private hire vehicles to switch to cleaner models that are not subject to charges. Owners of cars, vans or motorcycles will not be charged. £23 million in government funding will be used to support those facing charges to upgrade to cleaner vehicles and the Council will do everything it can to support businesses through this change. The Council will not make money from charges. The revenue will only be used to cover the costs of operating the zone, to support owners of vehicles affected, and for other schemes to improve air quality.

Hundreds of people in Leeds die each year due to air pollution, largely caused by vehicle emissions. Healthy Air Leeds was set up in January 2017 by Rachel Hartshorne, a concerned citizen, who wanted to do something to reduce air pollution in the city. The campaign group is made up of like-minded individuals, supported by local groups that also care about air quality. The group has been lobbying Leeds City Council for more stringent clean air zone plans as it feels that the current plans are not strong enough to significantly reduce the pollution levels in our city. Healthy Air Leeds is working with Friends of the Earth and Living Streets to promote active transport and change the reliance on cars for short journeys. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

Charles Henry Schwanfelder (1774-1837) Artist In September 1814 the Leeds artist Charles Henry Schwanfelder advertised proudly in the local press that he had been appointed ‘animal painter to His Royal Highness the Prince Regent’. What a coup! The flamboyant Prince Regent was notorious for his extravagant tastes in women, exotic architecture and top-breed horses. Schwanfelder had won favour with a fine painting of the Prince’s famous horse the ‘Malcolm Arabian’ – the picture still figures in the Royal Collection with two others of his. In the same advertisement ‘Mr S.’ took pains to thank his friends for their ‘liberal patronage’ and to reassure them that, though he would have to spend time in London, Leeds would remain his home. He was Leeds born and bred, in spite of his exotic name. His father, John James S., was probably one of the many German immigrants who came to England following the Hanoverian accession (think of Handel). He came to Leeds around 1770, anglicised his name to Swanfelder, set up in business in the Headrow as a decorative painter, and in 1773 married a Leeds girl, Elizabeth Farrer. Charles Henry was the first of their nine children, baptised in the old Parish Church in 1774. He trained with his father – decorating clock faces, snuff boxes, house interiors – but showed a special gift for painting animals, landscapes and portraits and in his early twenties went his own way. He moved to Ripon as an artist and teacher of art, offering classes and private lessons. He married Martha Cundale there in 1800, but she died four years later, just after the death of their baby son. At this point he moved back to Leeds, reverted to the German form of his name (did it sound more distinguished?) and began building up a clientele for his work among the newly rich merchants and professional families. They wanted pictures for the walls of their mansions, reflecting their sporting and leisure interests (horses and dogs), alongside family portraits and pleasing landscapes – with no hint of smoking chimneys.

The time and place favoured him. In 1809 the Northern Society for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts was founded in Leeds, with support from the great and good. Its first exhibition took place in the specially decorated Music Hall in Albion Street, amid great excitement. Schwanfelder showed an impressive 24 pictures, mostly very well reviewed and fetching good prices. That year he also had a picture at the London Royal Academy, enhancing his reputation with this metropolitan seal of approval. Over the following years the Northern Society’s exhibitions continued to provide an important local showcase for his work, the sales bringing him a substantial income. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy too, though he never stayed long in London. His royal warrant was renewed when the Prince became George IV, so Mr S. could advertise himself even more impressively as ‘animal painter to His Majesty’! But it's not clear whether that he painted more pictures for the King, or attended at court. Maybe he felt more at ease in Leeds than in busy competitive London.

He had to work hard for his success, travelling to Hull, Doncaster, Sheffield to take commissions. He painted local beauty spots like Bolton Abbey but also journeyed further afield to paint fashionable romantic landscapes – the Lake District, Scotland, North Wales – much in demand. Some eminent men sat for him, including Sir John Beckett, MP for Leeds, his portrait later engraved for circulation. He tried his hand at biblical and historical scenes too, even sculpture, advertising a bust of the eminent surgeon William Hey when he died, modelled, he claimed, from life (5 guineas each!). A friend has left a description of him: slender, sprightly, something of a dandy, with gold rimmed spectacles and a silver-topped cane. He lived well, moving from Boar Lane to Mill Hill, then in 1824 to a fine

house in East Parade, with stabling for his fine horse and sporty phaeton carriage. His personal life was less blessed. He had married again in 1810, Elizabeth Wade from Gainsborough, but she died in 1823 aged just 36, and one by one his children died too – his last daughter Caroline in 1833, aged 18, ‘after a long and agonising illness’. He married a third time in 1827, youthful Eliza King from Ripon. In his later years he suffered from severe asthma, then in 1837 developed a ‘disease of the windpipe’, travelled to London for an operation, but died shortly afterwards. He was buried at St. George’s, Hanover Square. Leeds has a collection of his work, mainly at Temple Newsam. It’s out of vogue now, but one charming picture of two brothers with their pony will figure soon in an exhibition there, a reminder of this once popular Leeds artist. Leeds Central Library to Host First Collections in Verse Showcase The first ‘Collections in Verse’ showcase, a nationwide collaboration between the British Library and Poet in the City, will launch at Leeds Central Library this month. Celebrating the Caribbean community’s impact on the cultural landscape of Leeds. It will feature live music, poetry, performance, talks and real-life stories. There will be a free takeover event ‘Colonizin’ in Reverse: Celebrating Caribbean Culture’ on Wednesday 27th March (6 – 9.30pm). This will feature Leeds DJ Fluid Irie, an open mic session with rapper/singer Testament, Dub Poetry with Roger Robinson, a celebration of Sound System Culture with Khadijah Ibrahiim, a performance by singer-songwriter Ayanna Witter-Johnson, and author/poet Anthony Joseph.

The project will spark new ways for audiences to engage with the British Library’s collections and exhibitions Poet in the City has commissioned three eminent Leeds poets of Caribbean descent to explore the legacy of Windrush on the city – Malika Booker, who is researching the impact of Windrush women on fashion and the textiles industry in Yorkshire; Vahni Capildeo, the current Douglas Caster Cultural Fellow in Poetry at the University of Leeds; and Khadijah Ibrahiim, the founder of Leeds Young Authors.

Collections in Verse is an ambitious poetry programme between the British Library, the Living Knowledge Network of 22 major libraries across the UK, and Poet in the City. The Leeds Playhouse’s new production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, playing in the Playhouse’s Pop-Up theatre from Friday 1st – Saturday 30th March, certainly presents a challenge. This searing tragedy of murder and revenge, directed by Amy Leach, Leeds Playhouse Associate Director, will burst onto the theatre’s wide, shallow stage with none of the useful wings, curtains and trap doors that usually accommodate the twists and turns of the play. But, as we have already seen in this pop-up season, clever design and direction can create fabulous theatre.

Set in contemporary Denmark where there is still conscription for both men and women, Princess Hamlet is an excited young army recruit, busy working out her place in society. Played by Tessa Parr, she returns home to attend her father’s funeral and soon realises that things are not operating as they should. Her country is on the brink of war and the royal family is plagued by corruption. Her father has been murdered and the burden of sorting all of this out falls on her shoulders, as she sets out to avenge her father’s murder. “It’s a magnificent play exploring a nation that has become rotten”, said Amy. “It feels hugely resonant in our current turbulent political times. It explores the identity and emotional journey of a young person with unspeakable burdens placed on their shoulders. Tessa’s performance in Romeo & Juliet was magnificent and I know she’ll make a superb Hamlet.”

Tessa is joined by other members of the wonderful Leeds Playhouse Ensemble Company –Dan Parr as Laertes, Darren Kuppan as Rosencrantz, Rob Pickavance as the Ghost, Susan Twist as Polonius, Joe Alessi as Claudius and Jo Mousley as Gertrude. Two new actors, Simona Bitmate as Ophelia and Crystal Condie as Horatio also join them, together with young actors from Leeds Playhouse’s youth programmes. Amy Leach reunites with designer Hayley Grindle, continuing a long and collaborative relationship that previously created Romeo & Juliet, Road and A Christmas Carol for Leeds Playhouse. Here, sea, cold, wind and rain lash the sleek Elsinore Castle that sticks out into the sea. Shiny new buildings contrast with nature, making it very elemental and atmospheric. Arts&Culture Twelve Drawings You Really Don’t Want to Miss

Twelve drawings by Leonardo da Vinci are being exhibited at Leeds Art Gallery until 6th May. This is a rare opportunity to see works by an astonishingly creative practitioner. Born in 1452, he is probably most famous for the Mona Lisa, the Vitruvian Man and his remarkable experimental drawings of helicopters and submarines. The archetypal Renaissance polymath, his interests extended to botany, geology, astronomy, mathematics, engineering, palaeontology, history and architecture, as well as painting and sculpture.

‘Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing’ is a national exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of his death. Mounted by the Royal Collection Trust, which holds over 500 of these works, drawings are on show at Leeds Art Gallery and eleven other galleries around the country, giving the widest possible exposure to fragile works that are normally kept in a carefully-controlled environment at Windsor Castle.

Each gallery is displaying twelve sketches reflecting Leonardo’s wide-ranging interests. The focus in Leeds is on his activity as a sculptor and the drawings illustrate the development of his sculptural thinking. Although none of his sculptures have survived, the drawings demonstrate how he brought his scientific and engineering knowledge to bear on sculpting. His drawings were central to his work in every field, both his artistic projects and his scientific investigations. Much of this work was unrealised or destroyed, but his drawings are testament to his genius. After the regional exhibitions, over 200 of Leonardo’s drawings will be displayed in the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace until 13th October. A final exhibition will be held at the Palace of Holyrood from November to March 2020. New Play from Nick Ahad Delves into the World of Wrestling Set in the eccentric world of British wrestling, GLORY, a new play by writer and broadcaster Nick Ahad, will be at The Albion Electric Warehouse, South Accommodation Rd, LS10 1PR, from 1st – 6th April. As British wrestling experiences a resurgence, GLORY will immerse audiences into the larger-than-life world of the sport. Set in a decrepit gym in the north of England, it sees faded star Jim ‘Glorious’ Glory and amateur wrestlers Dan, Ben and Sami confronting their demons and each other, as their lives collide - inside and outside the wrestling ring. The world that British wrestling inhabits provides a backdrop to Nick’s state-of-the-nation play, as it grapples with race, identity and what it means to be British today.

“I used to watch wrestling when I was a boy”, said Nick. “I still remember the excitement of seeing Giant Haystacks fight Big Daddy at Victoria Hall in Keighley in the 1980s. I thought British wrestling was a relic of the past, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Wrestling is alive, well - and as entertaining as ever. With larger than life characters and a perfect combination of sport, performance, blood and sweat, it is pure theatre. It is also the perfect arena to explore the Britain we all share today. I can't think of a better place for drama to play out than a wrestling ring.” A co-production by The Dukes Theatre, Lancaster, and Red Ladder Theatre Company, in association with Tamasha, Glory marks the first collaborative partnership between the three organisations. Arts&Culture Möbius Dance Presents Exciting Programme

Irish History Month 2019 Every year, March is Irish History Month. An Irish Arts Foundation initiative, it was first celebrated in Leeds in 2007. Now in its thirteenth year, Irish History Month exists to promote the many positive contributions that Irish people have made in Leeds and to introduce new audiences to the vibrancy of Irish arts, heritage, culture and history. Particular highlights this year include two talks that will focus on the experiences of the Irish men and women who left Ireland during the 1950s and ‘60s, their journey and memories of arriving in inner city Leeds. ‘The Sheepscar Triangle’ is at Leeds Central Library on Wednesday 13th March, and ‘They Came, They Sewed, They Stayed’ is at Kirkstall Abbey Visitor Centre on Friday 22nd March.On Saturday 30th March the Triskele Academy of Irish Dance will perform at the Kirkstall Abbey Deli Market; and mid- afternoon on Sunday 31st March there will be a traditional Irish music session, hosted by local musicians, on the Kirkstall Flyboat at Granary Wharf.

Möbius Dance, a contemporary dance company based in Leeds and founded by artistic director Gianluca Vincentini, will present an exciting programme at Kala Sangam on 21st March and The Civic, Barnsley on 6th April.

Throughout the month a model of the legendary Leeds public house, The(Old) Roscoe (demolished in 1982 to make way for the Sheepscar interchange project) will be on display in the community corridor in Leeds City Museum; and there will be an educational and cultural exhibition ‘Timeline’ at the Community Hub on Dewsbury Road.

This will consist of an explosive, passionate and highly physical performance featuring two robust, contemporary dance works choreographed by celebrated artists Douglas Thorpe and Jamaal Burkmar, and a new shortfilm directed by Gianluca Vincentini. Dance lovers will be enthralled by Burkmar’s ‘Time Moves Slow’, an incredibly passionate, fast-paced and dynamic work. And, ex-Phoenix dancer and Leedsbased artist, Douglas Thorpe, creates a powerful, theatrical and compelling piece for the company – made up here of four international dance artists – Stefania Pinato,

Horsforth Choral Society to Showcase Choral Classics To celebrate Spring and the approach of Easter, Horsforth Choral Society will perform oratorios from works across the ages in St Margaret’s Church, Horsforth, on Friday 22nd March at 7.30pm. The concert promises a varied evening, offering a dynamic range of music and moods with a selection from large and well-known works, including Handel’s ‘Messiah’ and Haydn’s ‘Creation’. “I’m delighted to introduce such a varied and enjoyable programme for our March concert”, said Tim Knight, the choir’s guest conductor. “We have a lovely selection of music, which will showcase the choir’s ability to tackle a range of styles and dynamics, as well as being accessible and entertaining for our audience.”

Sacred and Sublime Spellbinding music by a perfectionist Following the success of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem in Leeds Town Hall last November, Leeds Festival Chorus presents another requiem. This one is the key piece in a full programme in St Edmund’s, Roundhay, on Saturday 2nd March at 7.30pm, which brings together pieces by Bruckner, Grieg, Brahms, Elgar, Lotti and Schubert. Composed in 1947 by Maurice Duruflé, a virtuoso organ recitalist and music professor in Paris, this spellbinding Requiem is the work of a constantly self-critical perfectionist who revised it twice. The version to be performed by the Chorus is elegant, restrained and above all, subtle. It is also sensuous, despite the composer’s debt to the work of Medieval monks who sang Gregorian chant.

He stated that his Requiem reflects ‘the anguish of man faced with the mystery of his final end’. Perhaps the Pie Jesu, which is at the centre, provides the most moving moments, expressing joyful and sorrowful emotions. Franz Schubert’s Psalm 23 is probably better known than the Requiem. This motet will be sung by the women of the Chorus. The evening’s soloists are mezzo-soprano Katherine Aitken and baritone Edmund Danon. Leeds Women’s Aid Welcomes Domestic Abuse Bill The Government recently published the Domestic Abuse Bill, which introduces a range of measures such as banning domestic abusers from cross-examining victims in court and broadening the definition of domestic abuse to include non-physical and economic abuse.

Every year, Yorkshire Water is called out to more than 30,000 sewer blockages across the region, costing £2.4 million. About 40% of these are caused by wet wipes being flushed down toilets. The company has launched a ‘Blockage Free Challenge’, tasking residents in problematic hotspots to become blockage free by encouraging them to dispose of wet wipes in a bin. To reward the areas that achieve the greatest reduction in blockages, Yorkshire Water has made a £40,000 community fund available. This will be awarded to a grassroots charity or community-based initiative for the postcode area, which can be used to fund any type of communitybased project. To help communicate the scale of the problem, Yorkshire Water has enlisted the help of an eight-foot-tall monster, named ‘Wipesaur’ who feeds off the fats, grease and wet wipes that end up in the drains.

It will accompany its promotional team around the most problematic postcode zones. “If we are to reduce sewer blockages in the long-term, we need customers to stop wipes being flushed down the toilet and grease poured down kitchen sinks and ensure these types of items end up in the bin where they belong”, said Adrian Flanagan, who is leading the campaign. “We have community engagement teams working across areas in Leeds during the next few months to help spread the message of the importance of looking after the sewer network.” For further information, visit www. yorkshirewater.com/antiblockage The deadline for applications is Sunday 19th May 2019.

Horsforth’s Walk of Art Walks On! This year will be the fourth Walk of ART to take place in Horsforth and, once again, the aim is to promote the creativity and talent that abounds in and around Horsforth. This year, founder Lara Rule has handed over the Walk of ART ‘reins to Kezia Roberts. “I was nervous every time I thought about handing over the reins”, said Laura. “The WOA needed someone who understood why I had started it and who would ensure it continued to be entirely community focused and free for all. It’s a community festival that celebrates individual creativity through art. Next Leeds Lord Mayor

Councillor Eileen Taylor, who represents the Chapel Allerton Ward, was recently announced as the next Lord Mayor of Leeds at a meeting of the full Council. She will become the city’s 126th Lord Mayor following the Council’s Annual General Meeting on 23rd May 2019. Councillor Taylor’s father came to England in the early 1960s as part of the Windrush generation and she joined him in the early 1970s when she was just a teenager. She studied at Park Lane College and worked for the NHS in the Learning Disability and Mental Health department from the age of 19. Inspired by her work in the NHS, she retired in 2012 to concentrate on local politics. She was first elected as a councillor to represent the Chapel Allerton ward in 2008. “I feel extremely delighted and grateful for the huge honour of representing our fantastic city by becoming the new Lord Mayor for 2019-2020”, said Eileen. “I am very proud to be the first black Lord Mayor and a woman, which really shows how great and diverse our city is.”

‘Fighting Shame’, a documentary about poverty in Leeds, was premiered at Leeds Art Gallery in January. The 24-minute documentary was devised by a group of Leeds women with firsthand experience of poverty. They used eight everyday items and activities to illustrate the sacrifices and difficult choices that people are forced to make every day and the basic necessities many go without. They speak candidly about the stigma, shame and isolation of living in poverty. However, these women are not victims waiting to be rescued; they are all involved in finding solutions to support each other and the wider communities where they live. The film was made by Leeds-based production company, True Vision Yorkshire. It was filmed and edited by recent Leeds Beckett graduate, Harry Lock, and directed by first-time director, Sally Ogden, who worked collaboratively

with the women featured in the film to develop the content. The film was made with the support of The Guardian, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and BAFTA-nominated documentary filmmaker, Anna Hall. At the launch Q&A, the women were very vocal about issues such as loneliness, Universal Credit and public ignorance about poverty, much of which is hidden from view. They hope the film will challenge decision makers to consider the real impact of their policies, and for ordinary people to reach out to those who are struggling. Many people are barely surviving day-to-day and need a friendly knock on the door, a friendly invitation, a friendly hand up, to discover that there might be light at the end of the tunnel. The Reed Bunting is a small songbird, which does indeed frequent reedbeds, but is also found in many other sorts of habitat. The male is very distinctive with its black head and throat, broad white collar and small white downward stripe from the bill. Elsewhere it is streaky brown and black with a pale grey belly in Spring. Unlike the female of many small bird species, the female Reed Bunting is far from nondescript, with beautiful fine pale head markings. A traditional bird of wet places such as river margins, marshes and reedbeds, the Reed Bunting has also recently begun to colonise forestry plantations and farmland. It mainly feeds on seeds from grasses and wildflowers, but in Spring it will also take invertebrates such as caterpillars and spiders. The nest is often built near water either on the ground or in a bush, and it is one of the small bird species that can be targeted by Cuckoos, since reedbeds are also a favoured habitat of this parasitic bird.

The song of the male Reed Bunting is short, repetitive and monotonous, likened by some to a ‘zink, zank, zonk’ sound. There are around 200,000 breeding territories of Reed Buntings in the UK, but the population has declined by nearly 50% since 1970, due to the intensification of agriculture. Leeds RSPB Group

It is usually still possible in March to buy trees, shrubs, roses, hedging and fruit bushes in their dormant state. Buying them as bare root plants has several advantages, they are not in environmentally unfriendly plastic pots, they are almost always cheaper than their potted counterparts, and they weigh less and are easier to handle and plant.

Every year in March, February and sometimes even January I am impatient to sow seeds and witness the miracle of germination and the beginning of a new season. I start them off indoors at the earliest opportunity and often end up with tall, straggly seedlings that are ready to go out but remain crammed into their trays indoors because the weather is still inclement.

CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? DIRECTED BY: MARIELLE HELLER STARRING: MELISSA MCCARTHY, RICHARD E. GRANT, DOLLY WELLS, BEN FALCONE, GREGORY KOROSTISHEVSKY, JANE CURTIN CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 106 MINS Lee Israel is said to be one of the most successful literary forgers of all time. She was responsible for more than 400 counterfeit letters, sold off as the testament of prominent authors and celebrities. Now a new film tells the remarkable story of how she almost got away with it. ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ is loosely based on Israel’s 2008 memoir of the same name. Part biography, comedy and crime caper, it recounts the author’s creative and financial struggles as her literary work dips in popularity, forcing Israel to apply her talents elsewhere.

She ends up selling her possessions to make ends meet. When she stumbles upon an old letter signed by a famous star, she sells it to a New York bookshop and realises there's easy money to be made — more so if the content is embellished by her vintage typewriter. Israel sets up a production line to produce a string of highly-profitable written artefacts, but her forgeries soon fall into expert hands and the FBI close a circle around the scribe. ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ is a quirky, bookish tale which unfolds at a gentle measure, allowing its characters’ depths to be carefully studied. Israel’s crimes are framed by a much larger problem — her inability/ reluctance to empathise with people or exchange affection. We experience Israel sabotaging friendships at every turn, whilst a partner from the past imparts some sobering truths with an unexpected outcome. Offering wider scope beyond the crime drama formula, the film interrogates the near sociopathic qualities of its author as a failed writer, and it is this assessment which makes this film so utterly compelling.

This film may well prove to be McCarthy’s greatest achievement In a departure from her rambunctious roles, comedian Melissa McCarthy hands over a flawless and brilliantly barbed performance as Lee Israel. Forget the embarrassingly unfunny and desperate bawdiness of the recent ‘Ghostbusters’ flop; here McCarthy showcases her abilities as a serious dramatic actor in a study which is sensitively underplayed, devastatingly tragic, yet also laugh-out-

loud funny. It’s a bravely unglamorous part, rendering McCarthy almost unrecognisable in shabby clothes and an uncombed mop. The performance is purposefully ambiguous and nuanced with nasty edges, ensuring we never quite warm to Israel, yet always empathise with her situation. Her partner in crime is washed-up libertine Jack Hock, played with sass and swagger by Richard E. Grant. Reprising his incredible ability to imitate a drunk without ever touching the sauce in real life, Grant delivers a scene-stealing, ebullient performance which is hilariously camp and cocksure. Together they’re the perfect odd couple, permitting a captivating insight into the derelict quarter of the New York art world. Their boozy exchanges are amongst the finest scenes in the movie and feel like vignettes of pure twohanded theatre.

Actor-turned-director Marielle Heller delivers a beautifully photographed picture which is a true love letter to New York, acting as a travel guide to the city’s infamous bookshops and eccentric middle-class proprietors. The commitment to real Manhattan locations and genuine bookstores gives the film an authentic quality, whilst smart production design relocates the period in that samebut-different era of the early Nineties. A particularly chilling touch is the inclusion of the iconic ‘Silence = Death’ AIDS awareness campaign — a poster intruding upon several scenes and not without significance. A self-critical biography which blends black comedy with crime thrills, ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ is an unsentimental, uncompromising study of its troubled author and her self-destructive defence mechanisms. The film is many things: a critique of several lives which never met their full potential, an exploration of friendship, and a test of trust. But perhaps most of all, it’s an exciting demonstration of Melissa McCarthy’s hidden range. Lee Israel considered her forgeries to be her best work; this film may well prove to be McCarthy’s greatest achievement too.

Learn to Play Day, on Saturday 23rd/ Sunday 24th March, is a free, national event to encourage everyone to start making music. Held in partnership with the Musicians’ Union, the ‘Take It Away’ scheme, and Making Music, the Learn to Play Day has grown rapidly in popularity, with a record 10,000 free lessons held during last year’s event. Since its launch eight years ago it has helped thousands of people pick up and play a musical instrument - many of whom had never played before, or not played since they were children. Supported by Jools Holland and run by the charity Music for All, the 2019 event will see music shops, teachers, venues and schools throughout the

city partner with leading musical instrument brands to offer thousands of free music lessons. Venues taking part in Leeds include Garforth Brass Band at Garforth Miners Welfare Hall and PMT Leeds on Kirkstall Road. “As Patron of the Music for All charity, I’m delighted to lend my support to National Learn to Play Day”, said Jools. “It’s a pleasure to be able to share the joy of music, and this special day allows thousands to get involved.” Participating venues across Leeds are being added every day. It was made by Script Yorkshire's Dave Gilbank (director/writer), and the amazingly talented Gemma Head (also Script Yorkshire member), was one of its co-writers. The first International Sitar Festival, presented by South Asian Arts-uk and the Sitar Music Society, will take place across the UK in March, in memory of legendary maestro, Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib. This multi-city festival (Birmingham, Brighton, Newcastle, Leicester, London & Leeds) is a celebration and exploration of the artistry of sitar and aims to further the development, appreciation and enjoyment of the instrument. Martin House Competition Offers Young Musicians Chance to Play Leeds/Reading Festivals Martin House Hospice Care for Children and Young People recently launched its Centre Stage competition. Now in its tenth year, Centre Stage gives young bands and solo artists the chance to play at both the Leeds and Reading Festivals, while also raising money for the hospice.

Centre Stage has been backed by bands from across the region, including Embrace, The Cribs, Pigeon Detectives and Pulled Apart by Horses, and has raised over £225,000 for Martin House. This year, Mike Heaton, Embrace drummer and Martin House ambassador, will be among the judges, along with Shed Seven singer, Rick Witter. “This is a fantastic opportunity for the many talented young musicians across Yorkshire to win a chance to play in front of thousands of people at one of the country’s biggest music festivals, whilst helping other young people who have complex and life-limiting conditions”, said Sarah Smith, Centre Stage organiser at Martin House, which cares for children and young people with life-limiting conditions – and their families.

Book About The Leeds to Help Raise Funds for Prostate Cancer Paul Duffin recently launched his third book ‘Say The Leeds and You’re Smiling’ and all proceeds are going to Prostate Cancer UK.

Paul was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year and, despite also being deafblind, he decided to raise money for research and support for men affected by prostate cancer through sales of his book.

‘Say The Leeds and You’re Smiling’ is a light-hearted account of his rise through the ranks at the Leeds Permanent Building Society, where he worked for twenty-one years, starting as a Management Trainee and rising to become a General Manager, responsible for mortgages and savings at the Halifax, which merged with The Leeds in 1995. Paul retired due to losing most of his sight in 2002.

Local Councillor James Gibson worked with Ireland Wood Residents’ Association, St Paul’s Church, Unorthobox, Leeds Beckett University and the Keepers Café to bring an innovative new Health and Wellbeing project to life. The project offers people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to take part in a free and accessible exercise class – non-contact boxing. Following the boxing session, people will be able to socialise over a free healthy meal at a local community café and get information about the recipes and nutritional benefits of the food served. Councillor Gibson hopes that people will have fun socialising with people from all walks of life whilst at the same time improving their health through exercise, before learning about affordable, healthy, balanced diets whilst enjoying a delicious meal.

Step into Spring for Marie Curie Marie Curie’s ‘Step into Spring’ campaign is challenging people to walk 10,000 steps or more every day in March as part of their Great Daffodil Appeal. By 1st April, you'll have covered 150 miles! The charity hopes that people in Leeds will put their best foot forward, with sponsorship and support from friends and family, and the added feel-good-factor of raising vital funds. Register for Martin House’s Dragon Boat Race 2019 Here’s your chance to make a splash for cash and take part in the hugely popular Leeds Dragon Boat Race at Roundhay Park on Sunday 19th May and raise money for Martin House Hospice Care for Children and Young People. The hospice is calling for teams to sign up now for one of its most popular events. The race sees up to 42 teams take to Waterloo Lake to compete. Teams of ten, plus a drummer to keep time, paddle a 30ft Chinese dragon boat on the 200m course, for a chance to be crowned champions. Teams are encouraged to dress up, with prizes for the best fancy dress and best fundraising team, as well as the tug o’ war and dragon boat race winners. “Leeds Dragon Boat Race is such an exciting event”, said Ellie Barker, events fundraiser at Martin House. “Teams get to compete in at least three races throughout the day and can also register to take part in our Tug o’ War contest. It’s a fantastic day out for all the family. There’s also a funfair and face painting, plus plenty of refreshments.”

Its care includes respite stays, emergency and end of life care, as well as bereavement support. Bubble Rush 2019 One of the biggest family fun runs of the year, the Leeds Bubble Rush returns to Harewood House with a day of bubbly fun on Saturday 27th April. The event consists of a 5k run with four ‘foam zones’ where runners get covered from head to toe in brightly coloured bubbles. The Bubble Rush is one St Gemma’s Hospice biggest fundraising events, attracting thousands of people each time. “The Bubble Rush is a fantastic event and one that the whole family can get involved in”, said Pete Watson, Senior Events Fundraiser for the hospice. “Hundreds of people have signed up for this year’s event already and we are hoping that even more will sign up and help raise vital funds for the hospice. As well as the fun run there’ll be loads going on in the events village, with fundraising stalls, food, face painting, and inflatables - so there’s plenty for all the family to enjoy. Leeds Rotary Young Citizen Awards Leeds Rotary Club recently presented 18 young people from schools, colleges, academies and youth organisations in Leeds with Young Citizen Awards in recognition of their efforts for their families, schools, and communities. The Lord Mayor, Cllr Graham Latty, presented certificates and books to the winners Eleni Hawksworth (13) from Rodillian Academy, whose brother Evan died of a brain injury, worked with her family and Evan’s Rugby teammates to raise over £24,000 for several Leeds causes. Alice Burberry (17) and Tom Elton (15), Abbey Grange C of E Academy, organise all the fundraising activities for the school. Elliot Orange (15) and Amtul Azeem (15), Carr Manor Community School, work for the Jane Tomlinson Run and raise money for St Gemma’s. Imogen Gill (18), Guiseley School, organised school charity events.

Haley Belston (11), Guiseley School, is a carer for her mother and younger siblings. Abdul El Saboni (18), Allerton High School, who fled Syria, volunteers as a mentor and tutor for asylum seekers. Helping fellow students as learning supporters, mentors, bully buddies, interpreters, and generally helping in and outside school were Nathaniel Oneshuagbe (16), Leeds East Academy, Daniel-Emanuel Ciuca (12), and Hanim Abdallah (14) Leeds City Academy. Many winners supported teachers and acted as ambassadors delivering assemblies, workshops, sitting on school councils and contributing to the welfare of fellow students. Among these are Amtul Azeem, Elliot Orange, Poppy Snowden (all 14), Leeds West Academy, and Lanre Adeleye (15) Bishop Young C of E Academy.

Mohammad Arfan (18) works with the air cadets and was nominated by 2387 Pudsey Squadron RAFAC. Mohsin Ahmed (14) Leeds West Academy has been accepted in the Police Cadets and in St John ambulance. He recently helped rescue the occupants of a burning car. The charity Market Place nominated Ben Newton, Daisy Stenhouse and Edith Underwood (all 13) who are very active in SHOUT, one of the influence groups involved in consulations in the Market Place. Elona Gangal (15), Leeds City Academy, volunteers at CATCH (Community Action to Change Harehills) and works with the Police and Leeds City Council to deliver youth sessions. These are just a few examples of the great enterprise and committment shown by Leeds young people who are doing tremendous work for their schools, colleges, and communities. #MoneyHacksLeeds – Delivering Essential Financial Education to Young People MoneyHacks is a not-for-profit project that aims to deliver financial education to young people in the form of face-to-face group training sessions. “Promoting positive financial habits is more important than ever for our young people”, said Karol Thornton, who is leading the project. “Our project talks to children and teenagers about good saving and spending habits, budgeting, money management and lots more. Giving kids the power to make informed decisions is one step towards preventing the kind of financial issues we see growing in society right now that can lead to excessive debt and poverty.” MoneyHacks have devised a number of modules that cover budgeting, cost of living, saving and borrowing, and fraud and scams, all relevant to its target age group of 11 - 18 year olds. All content is tailored to suit the age range and needs of each group. The team of experienced trainers and educators is flexible with its format – it could be a 45-minute evening session at a college, a lunchtime break, or a longer session on a Saturday morning. They can even train teachers and educators to deliver the training themselves. Sessions are usually about an hour long and are interactive with activities.

The project, launched first in Leeds, is supported by Chapeltown Citizens Advice Bureau, Leeds Community Foundation and Lowell Giving Community Fund, and is currently building relationships with schools and youth groups across the region to deliver this training to their young people.
