0113 274 8776 A new film and book commemorating the 170th anniversary of the opening of the Bramhope Tunnel, and paying tribute to the thousands of navigators (navvies) who worked in horrendous conditions to build it, were released in July. The Bramhope Tunnel was one of the longest rail tunnels to be built in the country at that time (1845-1849), forming part of the Leeds and Thirsk Railway that was designed to open up trade between the burgeoning economies of West Yorkshire and the North East. The proposed route faced several major obstacles, none greater than the ridge between Airedale and Wharfedale which required the building of the 2.138-mile (3.441 km) tunnel passing under the village of Bramhope to link Horsforth with the Arthington Viaduct that takes the line over the River Wharfe to Harrogate and beyond. The tunnel, engineered by Thomas Grainger and built under contract by James Bray, required the manpower of thousands of
navvies who worked in the most challenging of conditions. They are commemorated in a memorial to all those who lost their lives building the vast network of railways across the country in the graveyard of All Saints Parish Church in Otley.

‘What Lies Beneath’ was written as part of a research project by Angela Leathley of the Otley Conservation Taskforce. It covers the life of navvies during the rapid expansion of the railways in the 19th century. It is available (£5) from Otley Town Council with all proceeds going towards the maintenance of the memorial. Otley-based Catapult Films has produced the 30-minute documentary ‘The Navvies Who Built the Bramhope Tunnel’ featuring footage from inside the tunnel alongside interviews with local historians, Geoffrey Forster, Barbara Winfield and Neil Simpson, plus contributions by Otley musicians Serious Sam Barrett, and Greg Mulholland from Summercross.

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford RICHARD OASTLER (1789-1861) Radical activist and campaigner ‘The Factory King’ In 1830, as campaigners fought for the abolition of slavery in Britain’s colonies overseas, a letter appeared in the Leeds press pointing the finger closer to home. Headed ‘Yorkshire Slavery’, it described in blistering detail the wretched lives of children working from age seven in the worsted mills of Yorkshire, enslaved from six in the morning to seven at night, exhausted, beaten, crippled – ‘sacrificed to avarice’. It was a shocking and passionate call for action, and it triggered a movement across the country which led to improvements in people’s working lives and transformed the life of the writer himself – Richard Oastler.
Oastler was 41 when he wrote the letter. Originally from Leeds, born in a fine house in St Peter’s Square, he was the eighth child of Robert Oastler, a cloth merchant who was later appointed steward of a large country estate at Fixby near Huddersfield. Richard was educated at Fulneck School, then, after a period in an architect’s office, at 21 he set up his own business dealing in oils, dyes and wools. From his Methodist father and his schooling at Fulneck he had absorbed strong religious and philanthropic ideals: he worked for the anti-slavery movement and joined his friend Michael Sadler tending the poor and sick in the slums of Leeds – a revealing insight into their desperate living conditions. In 1816 he married Mary Tatham from Nottingham. It was a happy and supportive marriage; but life was not easy for them: their two babies died in infancy and then his business failed. He was saved by the offer of the steward’s post at Fixby following his father’s death in 1820. He moved to live in the rather grand Fixby Hall. A firm Tory, he opposed parliamentary reform and believed in traditional values, but he retained his instinctive sympathy with working people. It was his realisation
of the appalling conditions in the expanding factories and mills around Bradford and Leeds that fired him to write his famous, life-changing letter. It caused a sensation and stirred up violent controversy. The mill-owners were of course opposed to any government intervention, though the truth of Oastler’s allegations could not be denied. He thrived on conflict, publishing yet more letters and pamphlets and addressing meetings around the county, a rousing and fiery orator. While some small concessions for children were squeezed from the government, his campaign led inevitably to pressure for a limit on the hours of all factory workers: a ten-hour day. ‘Short-time’ committees of workpeople were formed in every town and Oastler, with Michael Sadler as MP, led the campaign for a ‘Ten-Hours’ Act. A tall, warm, charismatic figure, he won people’s hearts and minds, and as ‘the Factory King’ was adored and feted wherever he went. This was not his only campaign. He took on the role of spokesman for the poor and oppressed in opposing the introduction of the
new Poor Law of 1834, with its grim emphasis on the workhouse system. Meanwhile at Fixby his loyal, courageous wife helped to keep his estate work going. Finally, his violent oratory and inflammatory political activities brought him into conflict with his employer, the owner of the estate: he was dismissed from his post, lost his home, was accused and convicted of debt, and imprisoned until money could be found to settle the claims against him. He was almost four years in prison, mainly in the Fleet, but used his time to publish a regular and widely-read political journal: The Fleet Papers. Meanwhile his loyal supporters collected and borrowed money to buy his freedom, and he was finally released in early 1844.
had attended, and their two babies who had died long before were re-interred with her. Perhaps her death prompted his move back to London in 1846, where he had been offered other work. The Ten-Hour Act was finally passed in 1847, hailed as his crowning achievement. He died in 1861 on a return visit to Yorkshire, and was buried in a vault at St Stephen’s, next to his wife and children (hidden in brambles now). Thousands of workpeople turned out for his funeral, and it was reported that ‘even stern manhood’ was moved to tears at the loss of their spokesman and hero.
He had to find work to support himself and his wife and adopted daughter. In July 1844 he came back to Leeds to live in Headingley, at Westfield Grove off North Lane, ‘this lovely spot’ as he called it. He set up as a sharebroker, a partner in the firm Wellbeloved and Oastler. Sadly his beloved wife Mary died just a year later in June 1845, aged only 52. She was buried at St Stephen’s Church, Kirkstall, the church they

Richard Wins Passmore £6,000 Easy Access Bathroom! Harrogate resident, Richard Matthews, was recently declared the lucky winner of a £6,000 accessible bathroom in the Passmore Group’s latest competition, which celebrated the home improvement specialists’ continued growth and successful expansion of its More Ability division in the region. The brand – which provides stylish, accessible bathrooms – aims to improve independence for the over 65s and lessable. Entrants in the competition had to answer the question: ‘How would a More Ability bathroom make a difference to your life?’ and the winner was selected from over 100 entrants. “Our last competition which marked our 50th anniversary was a huge success – which is why we wanted to do it again”, said Tony Passmore, Managing Director. “But this time we wanted to give away a More Ability bathroom. We are passionate about providing solutions for the elderly and less-able and enabling them to bathe independently and, most importantly, safely. It also provides
relatives and friends with the peace of mind that their loved ones are safe in their own homes.” Since moving back into his property having suffered a stroke three years ago, Richard struggled with bathing. His bathroom consisted of a bath with overhead shower, which proved unsuitable and unsafe, resulting in him having to wash at a handbasin. Richard visited the brand’s showroom in Harrogate with his sister Eleanor, who entered the competition on his behalf and has been helping him since his stroke. “I saw the competition on Facebook and entered it for Richard”, said Eleanor. “I couldn’t believe it when he won – we were over the moon!” His bathroom was completely redesigned using 3D visuals in the showroom. “Richard was initially interested in a walk-in bath, but after speaking with the design specialists we realised an easyaccess shower room would not only be future-proof, but also safe”, said Eleanor.
“The anti-slip flooring and safety vinyl will give us both piece of mind, as well as improving his lifestyle and quality of life!” “The competition was a great chance to thank our loyal customers in the West and North Yorkshire community and to give something back”, said Tony. “Our 54 years in business, and our successful expansion into Harrogate a year ago, are very much down to our successful relationship with our customers in this area.” Headquartered in Wortley, Leeds, the 50-strong company services customers within a 30-mile radius of both its showrooms.
Three More Years for Alcohol & Drug Service Forward Leeds will continue to provide the city’s alcohol and drug service for a further three years. Since it launched in July 2015, the service has supported over 11,000 adults and 900 young people, offering one-to-one support, groups, access to rehabilitation and detoxification programmes and support for families, as well as community-based advice and information. “This extension enables us to continue developing to meet the needs of those in need of our services”, said Anna Headley, Executive Director. “In a climate of tight budgets, our team has continued to deliver an outstanding service to those coming in for support. It’s great that this has been recognised by Leeds City Council. We’re very proud that around 150 people meet their goals and exit our service every month.”
the Leeds centre for sustained recovery from substance misuse. Outreach workers are based in more than 40 GP surgeries and health centres across the city, as well as in hospitals. Its young people’s team does over 600 school visits a year. “We’re leading the way internationally with innovative treatment pathways for new psychoactive substances such as ‘spice’”, said Anna. “We’ve introduced drug and alcohol workers on the streets of Leeds, working with those living street-based lifestyles and even work with people who just want help to moderate their drinking.”
The service introduced take-home naloxone kits that help prevent deaths from overdoses and established 5 WAYS as

Firecracker Ball Aims to Hit £3m! This year, the Firecracker Ball is aiming to reach its target of £3m for Barnardo’s, which has been its chosen charity since 2002. To date it has raised just short of £2.8m, so it hopes to attract at least £200,000 on Saturday 9th November at Rudding Park Hotel. The theme for the 2019 black-tie event is ‘Four Seasons’. Guests will be transported into a seasonal extravaganza as they enter a specially designed marquee at the hotel. The evening promises a huge headline act and other surprises, including celebrity appearances and ‘money can’t buy’ auction prizes. “The Firecracker Ball is a great opportunity to host clients or friends at a truly memorable event”, said Phil Taylor, Barnardo’s vice president and chair of the Firecracker Ball committee. “It’s a must for Yorkshire’s leading corporate businesses and entrepreneurs, with companies and individuals returning year on year.”
The Firecracker Ball is helping to change the lives of thousands of children and young people across Yorkshire. The committee is seeking support from individuals and businesses in the region who are interested in sponsorship packages, table bookings or donating auction or other prizes for the charity. “The funds raised will help to ensure that Barnardo’s can continue to provide services to help children flourish across Yorkshire”, said Kirsty Guy, Barnardo’s senior relationship manager. “They will help to keep families strong and help communities to protect and nurture their young people.” For more information visit www. thefirecrackerball.co.uk and for bookings please contact Kirsty Guy 07522 216125 / kirsty.guy@barnardos.org.uk

Opera North’s commitment to environmental sustainability was recently recognised with the award of Best Newcomer at the 2019 Creative Green Awards in London.
These awards are organised by the Julie’s Bicycle charity to recognise climate action leadership in the cultural sector. The judges were particularly impressed by the range of initiatives Opera North has introduced over the past year, from recycling stage sets and moving to a renewable energy tariff, to reducing electricity usage and food waste by encouraging company-wide behavioural change. Looking to the future, there was also an acknowledgement of Opera North’s aim to create an environmentally sustainable and efficient estate as part of its £18m site redevelopment
on New Briggate. Photovoltaic panels will be used on the building to generate energy and there will be a major investment in digital infrastructure to increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact. “We set up our Green Team to advocate internally for environmental aims and to keep them at the top of the agenda”, said Jamie Saye, who heads up Opera North’s Green Team. “Not only has this proved to be good business practice, but it has also led to savings across the company as people have become more aware of the impact of their actions and have started to think more carefully about the resources they use.”
People have become more aware of the impact of their actions The awards took place at Curzon Bloomsbury as part of the Mayor of London’s inaugural London Climate Action Week. They were an opportunity to share environmental success stories, celebrating how conversations around climate change are being translated into real and meaningful action in the arts and creative sector. Canopy Secures 37 Properties to Continue Work with Homeless
Canopy Housing, a self-help homelessness project that works with volunteers and homeless people to renovate empty houses in deprived areas of Leeds, was recently granted 99-year leases on 37 properties owned by Leeds City Council.
"These long leases will enable Canopy to secure additional borrowing to turn more empty properties into homes”, said David Nugent, Director.“They will also allow us to offer more support and volunteering opportunities for people in the deprived areas where we work." The successful Canopy model is based on tenants initially becoming self-helpers, which means joining the volunteer team, making decisions about how their home will look and helping to renovate their home before they move in. These 99-year leases will help Canopy secure its future and create stable homes for its tenants.”
“Canopy do a wonderful job”, said Cllr Debra Coupar, Executive Member at Leeds City Council, “not only by bringing much needed housing back into use, but also through involving volunteers and tenants in the work.” Canopy were winners of the UN World Habitat Award 2016 For more information visit canopyhousing.org

Life&Style Simply Carpets & Beds – Flooring to Die For!
‘Alternative’ and ‘Individual’ are also exciting ranges with discreet, contemporary patterning; and the beautiful range of stair runners could transform a hallway.
Carpeting is not something that I generally get excited about, but a recent visit to Simply Carpets and Beds on Low Lane in Horsforth made me want to change the carpets and flooring in every room of the house!
This may not be a huge showroom but upstairs and down it is filled with wonderful samples of carpets and flooring that could make you drool. From sisals and seagrasses to hardwearing mixtures, soft, durable wools and the luxurious handmade silks from Jacaranda – you immediately start picturing where you could use certain lines (Jacaranda for the bedroom, I think!). What made the visit more enjoyable was the personal attention and knowledge. Not surprising when you know that David Vine started the business 33 years ago and his son Craig has been running it for the last
13 years. You might say flooring is in the blood! The showroom has expanded over the years – most recently opening up the basement to showcase the Harvey Maria and fabulous Karndean ranges. If you’re a fan of high-quality laminates or parquet look no further – there is a superb selection of contemporary designs and finishes. And, they are currently expanding their range of tiling to include striking Moroccan and Victorian designs. There are just a few Karndean dealers around Leeds and Craig has no hesitation in claiming that they are specialists in the line. “Karndean are wonderful products to work with”, he said. “They don’t only look great, they are hardwearing and waterproof and suit a wide variety of homes.”
But, it’s care for the customer that is at the top of Craig’s list. “We really do offer a hand-holding service – Once you have had a good look, we are happy to come to your home to discuss suitability and fitting. Our team of ten fitters is highly experienced – in fact some of them have even been with us since my father was running the business! They work in teams of two and generally take no more than a day to complete work – moving furniture and disposing of old carpeting, expertly fitting and leaving your home spotless.” And, there is more exciting news – the showroom will soon be rebranding. It is dropping the beds part of the business and concentrating on its impressive ranges of quality flooring. Watch this space! This is a business that never stands still. F S I The King and I is Heading for The Grand Following its smash hit Broadway run and a sold-out, record-breaking season at the London Palladium, the multi Tony Award-winning production of ‘The King and I’ is coming to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 29th October to Saturday 9th November.
Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical boasts one of the finest scores ever written, including ‘Whistle a Happy Tune’, ‘Getting to Know You’ and ‘Shall We Dance’, and features a company of over 50 world-class performers with full orchestra.
Directed by Bartlett Sher and produced by the same celebrated creative team that brought the production to the Palladium, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a fascinating woman who travelled the world and spent some time as teacher to the King of Siam’s many wives and children.
“The response from London audiences was unprecedented”, said Producer Howard Panter. “Critical plaudits, Box Office records and standing ovations at every show. We were overwhelmed by the rapturous response. This is musical theatre at its very best, so we are thrilled that we can now share it with theatregoers up and down the country.”
Annalene Beechey is Anna, fresh from her West End success, and Jose Llana will reprise his critically acclaimed Broadway performance as The King. The two stars have been wowing audiences since the musical embarked on its international tour earlier this year. “I absolutely love playing Anna, she is a dream role for any actress”, said Annalene. “I’m delighted to bring this wonderful production and our glorious King to Yorkshire!”

Presented at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from 5th – 7th September, the programme includes ‘The Kingdom of Back’ by Morgann Runacre-Temple, ‘Powerhouse Rhumba’ by David Nixon, and the world première of ‘For an Instant’ by Amaury Lebrun. Morgann Runacre-Temple’s The Kingdom of Back presents a personal portrait of Wolfgang Mozart’s elder sister, Nannerl, a musical genius in her own right. Humorous and moving, it offers a different lens on the world of the Mozart family. Drawing inspiration from the family’s letters, the piece explores the complex relationship between Leopold Mozart and his two prodigious children. Sculpt – An Extraordinary Art Pictured:

Sculpt, a new free art event, runs until 28th September in seven churches around Masham (near Ripon) – North Stainley, West Tanfield, Well, Snape, Masham, Healey and Mickley. Each church has had a site-specific artwork installed by an international artist, whose brief was to respond to the space. They have all risen to the occasion and created dramatic installations. The 26-mile trail offers all the ingredients for a stimulating visit to buildings that are often neglected or ignored. Harriet Hill’s sculpture 'Rock of Ages' takes the form of a huge floating rock, nearly three metres long, created from woven willow and felt from the wool of Masham sheep. It represents the layering of history, in particular relating to the people who have worked the land and lived around the church throughout its 1000+ year history. It is suspended on cord stretching from all corners of the church, suggesting the connections across the years and linking us to the continuing history of the church and surrounding community.
The Church of England is following the development of Sculpt with interest with a view to encouraging England’s other 16,000 churches to try something similar. Art in Churches, which is supported by John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, who is its patron, is a new initiative designed to encourage people to re-engage with churches through cultural events. As well as offering opportunities for education and community involvement, there is also a treasure hunt to engage children at each venue. Sculpt is dramatic not passive art. This is the first event of its kind in the UK and is taking place at the same time as Yorkshire Sculpture International – making Yorkshire the top destination for sculpture in the UK in 2019. The project has been made possible by the generous support of the Arts Council, the Jerusalem Trust, All Churches Trust, Skipton Hire Centres, The Arts Society North East Area, Concord Lighting and the Himalayan Garden.
The Secret Seven at Leeds University Aireborne Theatre, a Leeds-based company, is about to present ‘a riotous and rib-tickling’ spoof of Enid Blyton’s much loved and undeniably ‘British’ detective series ‘The Secret Seven’ at Workshop Theatre (University of Leeds campus) on Friday 9th August at 7.45pm. This unruly bunch of intrepid explorers will solve the most puzzling mystery their secret society has ever seen. There will be intrigue, danger and lashings of ginger beer in this high-energy, nostalgic, tongue-in-cheek comedy. Is anyone going to ask them why, for a children’s society, they all look suspiciously adult? So many puzzles to solve! This year marks the 70th anniversary since the first 'Secret Seven' book was published. Since then social attitudes have changed greatly – casual sexism and racism are fairly prominent
in the books. Aireborne pokes fun at these antiquated views, highlighting the progress made in these areas, whilst showing that there is still much to do. Aireborne has been part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the past 20 years and returns this year to a new venue, theSpaceUK. Aireborne provides opportunities to theatre makers and performers in and around Leeds. It was founded by Leeds University Union Theatre Group, a well-established society currently celebrating its one-hundredth year.

CommunityNews Chapel Allerton Arts Festival 2019
Phew! Earlier this year, the 2019 Chapel Allerton Arts Festival risked not taking place at all due to a lack of volunteers. But a call went out, banners appeared, there was support from local Press, and at a public meeting in May the Committee signed up enough volunteers to ensure that this wonderful Festival would carry on. Running from Monday 26th August to Sunday 1st September, it’s more than a festival…it’s a showcase for local and emerging talent, a party, a celebration of community, it’s dancing in the streets! The week kicks off with the Short Film Festival at Seven Arts – the annual showcase of local filmmaking. There will be an Art Hunt in Gledhow Valley Woods, a Picnic in the Park on Thursday; and loads of events at the Library. On Friday evening enjoy Tea on the Street accompanied by music from the Main Stage at 6pm. Saturday will see the return of the popular stalls around Well Lane, with family entertainment, children’s activities, street theatre,
food, craft beer, an art exhibition in the Methodist Church and lots more. St. Matthew’s has an Eco Art installation; Cafe Run makes a return in the afternoon; and the Folk Roots Fringe and Jazz runs from Thursday to Sunday around Chapel Allerton. On Sunday you can join in with the Churches Together Festival Hymns on Regent Street, then the Village Jazz Festival continues into early evening. And, don’t forget to check out the vintage and classic car display just around the corner in Well Lane. Chapel Allerton Arts Festival is run entirely by volunteers and there could still be time to get involved. They always welcome more stewards. For details of volunteering and all activities, events, performers, venues, tickets and times, please visit chapelallerton.org.uk Chapel Allerton Arts Festival is supported by the Arts Council, England.
Children’s Heart Surgery Fund Gets Cash Boost
Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) recently scooped £1,000 from Persimmon Homes’ Building Futures programme, run in partnership with Team GB, the British Olympic Association. The donation will go towards the charity’s family camp in Dearne Valley, which helps children affected by congenital heart disease to build confidence and resilience. CHSF looks after over 450 babies, children and adults who have had open heart surgery each year, providing life-saving equipment and support for patients and their families across Yorkshire, as well as funding research into congenital heart disease. Persimmon Homes distributes £32,000 a month across its 32 regional operating areas, supporting groups that work with under 18s across three categories: sports, education and arts, and health. Last year Persimmon gave away £620,000 to support children’s sport. For further information about Building Futures, visit www. persimmonhomes.com/buildingfutures

Exhibition Celebrates First Generation Jamaicans The Eulogy Exhibition in Room 700 Leeds Central Library (2nd August – 8th September) is part of the Chapeltown-based Eulogy Project, celebrating the pioneering generation who made the journey from Jamaica to the UK between the 1940s – 1960s. “The UK’s first-generation Jamaicans and other West Indians left their homes and loved ones behind to answer Britain’s call for help in World War II”, said Rev Dorothy Stewart, Chair of the Jamaica Society. “Just a few years later they would answer the call once again to fill the post war labour shortage in the NHS, textiles, transport, engineering and other sectors. Yes, they did so for their families and to fulfil youthful ambitions, but we must never forget that their quest for opportunity helped to build our cities, including Leeds. The Eulogy Exhibition will help us to recognise that Leeds would not be the city it is today without them.” The exhibition will feature the photography and eulogies included in the traditional Jamaican funeral programmes for 76 first generation Jamaicans who settled in Leeds, gthered during a series of community collection events. It will also feature other family keepsakes, items from their arrival in Leeds, interviews with family members and peers, and other artefacts. “The Eulogy Exhibition goes beyond perceptions of the Windrush Generation”, said Susan Pitter, Exhibition Curator, whose
honour to be a part of helping to ensure that those years of contributions by Jamaicans to the economic prosperity and cultural richness of Leeds that we enjoy today are ingrained in the story of our city.”
parents came from Jamaica in the early 1960s, and are included in the exhibition. “Ordinary stories of triumph and heartbreak, of young couples in love, families, and people making a living will be showcased with equal importance alongside the achievements of trailblazing community activists and RAF servicemen. These are human stories that everyone can relate to. “The exhibition is a powerful reflection on the contributions of that generation and its continuing impact on our city. The 76 men and women featured spent a combined total of almost 3,500 years as citizens of Leeds. It is a privilege and an
Twenty Family Legacy Portraits, of children to great, great grandchildren, by Paul Floyd Blake will sit next to those of their first generation loved ones in younger days, together with items belonging to them. The portraits were taken at the former Gerald Donne Photo Studio on Chapeltown Road, where most Jamaicans and other new to Leeds West Indians had formal studio portraits taken shortly after arrival to send to family in the Caribbean. “My father is Jamaican”, said award winning photographer Paul Floyd Blake. “He came over in 1956. Eulogy has helped me to connect with his stories and understand how courageous it was for him to come to a country so far away and make a new life.” Exhibition images will be featured in a Eulogy photo book to be published later this year. “The key to living longer is the one to the front door” is a favourite saying of my friend and colleague Peter Harrand. I was reminded of this when I heard of MAECare’s project, Walking Football. This super accessible sport is suitable for both men and women and is especially good for older people (including those with some health conditions). The sessions are run in conjunction with the Leeds United Foundation. If you’re over 50 and live in LS17 and would like to give it a go, call Janet on 074 986 14227 for more details. Summer is here and for some that means trips away. West Yorkshire Police are stressing the importance of ensuring that your property is properly secured while you’re away. Time switches for lights, a
car in the driveway, neighbours putting your bins out – all help to make your home look occupied. Locked windows and doors are obvious, especially on days out, it’s amazing how many people leave a window ajar. That small gap could be all a burglar needs. There are now doorbells that have cameras that connect to your phone, allowing you to speak to the person at your door, wherever you might be. They aren’t cheap but they are effective. Summer holidays also present the dilemma of what to do with the kids. Leeds City Beach, one of my favourite events, is returning. The beach, which is free, will be at Victoria Gardens, outside Leeds Art Gallery, from Saturday 10th August – Sunday 1st September, 10.30am – 6pm. There will be deck chairs and funfair rides (for a small cost). There will also be food and drink stalls – just no icecold sea to dip your toes into! This is also the time when trees and bushes grow with a vengeance,
sometimes blocking pavements and drivers’ sightlines at junctions. If we could all check whether our greenery is causing a nuisance and trim it back a bit, that would be great. Finally, a plea from the Highways Department - the roadworks at the A61 / Ring Road roundabout should be completed by November. However, the regular tailbacks could be reduced if we all followed the signs imploring us to ‘Queue in both lanes’ and then ‘Merge in Turn’ where the road becomes one lane. Traffic is currently moving into one lane too early – Highways are adamant that if we all use both lanes and merge in turn the queue will move faster. Do please remember, for any and all local issues, Peter, Neil and myself are always here to help. Shadow Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture - 07711 647 849 Daniel.Cohen@leeds.gov.uk

Oystercatcher Photo: Chris Gomersall rspb-images. com
Oystercatchers are wading birds, but not one of those with cryptic grey and white plumage that blends almost invisibly with sea and shore. They are loud and proud, their big, bright orange bill contrasting with their sharp black and white plumage, and echoed by their bright red legs. You know when Oystercatchers are around as they will often take off on your approach, giving out their shrill piping calls. In Winter they gather on our coasts, sometimes in large flocks, which roost together at high tide. In the breeding season, they build their nests in a variety of coastal habitats such as dunes and rocky beaches, but will also nest inland on river banks, the shores of lakes, gravel pits, and even occasionally the roofs of large buildings. On the coast they eat mainly shellfish such as mussels and cockles, which they either prise open or smash apart, but inland their main food is worms. Some individuals have been known to chase other waders
and steal their food. Unusually for a wader, their chicks are not able to feed themselves once fledged, but rely on their parents for more than six weeks. There are about 110,000 pairs of Oystercatchers breeding in Britain, but there has recently been a decline in Scotland, the reason for which is as yet unclear. Leeds RSPB Group

Garden Round Up With Tracy Foster
This traditional holiday month coincides with a period of high activity in the garden. Here are a few things to do to make sure your garden thrives whether you are home or away. Going Away?
Flowers
The best solution for holiday garden care is to ask someone to call now and then to help with watering when dry, and with picking crops such as courgettes and beans to keep plants producing. Whether you have someone visiting or not, here are three tips that will help plants to survive in your absence.
Deadhead perennials and bedding plants to keep them flowering into the Autumn and to prevent self seeding. Cutting back any dying or untidy foliage on perennials will also result in fresh new growth and stimulates a new flush of flowers in some species.

Wisteria will outgrow its space and will not flower well unless it is pruned in Summer as well as in Winter. Cut off the long whippy growth now, shortening those shoots to about five leaves. Once Lavender has flowered, clip off the dead heads and trim the plants lightly to make a neat dome shape. You can also prune shrubs such as Weigela and Philadelphus shortly after flowering if they need reducing in size or tidying up. Sound&Vision Film Review By Samuel Payne
APOLLO 11 WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: TODD DOUGLAS MILLER STARRING: BUZZ ALDRIN, NEIL ARMSTRONG, MICHAEL COLLINS, CHARLES DUKE, GENE KRANZ, DEKE SLAYTON, WALTER CRONKITE CERT: U RUNNING TIME: 93 MINUTES "Roger, Tranquillity, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again!"
4:17 pm. Sunday 20th July 1969. Mission Control in Houston confirms that history has been made. After battling computer crashes, radio dropouts and a near depleted fuel tank, the spider-like Lunar Module sits silently on the surface of the moon. Within its tiny cabin, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin have become the first humans to stand upon another world. Fifty years on and perhaps we’ve become over-accustomed to grainy footage of Saturn V rockets launching from Cape Canaveral or astronauts trudging around on the surface of the moon. There’s something dreamlike about those fuzzy, vintage videos which disengage and distance the High-Def generation from the reality of NASA’s greatest accomplishment. But now an all-new documentary, based on recently uncovered footage, offers a sobering perspective on Apollo 11. Director Todd Douglas Miller has utilised state-of-the-art film restoration to present an enhanced experience of the mission, providing scope, scale and eye-popping clarity to a fifty-year-old experience. Shot in the ultra-high-resolution format of 70mm – usually reserved for Technicolor epics and Westerns — the found footage captures finite details from the ceremony of astronauts kitting up for launch through to their translunar voyage, problematic descent to the moon and fiery return through Earth’s superheated atmosphere. In detail alone it’s a thrilling rollercoaster ride, contrasting aweinspiring shots of explosive rocket engines with charismatic vignettes of spectators reacting on the ground. The scale is immense, yet the study of its human players is surprisingly intimate, particularly its astronaut crew who now seem remarkably young and vulnerable. The documentary embeds its narrative tone in the media grammar of the late Sixties, utilising narration from contemporary TV news anchors such
as Walter Cronkite. Basic animations also help visualise the complexities of the technology with a line-drawn retro-style, whilst multiple TV feeds are ordered into banks of screens to showcase a multitude of perspectives. In a brilliantly unassuming footnote, real-time telemetry is captioned during moments of flight, captioning some incredible forces at work. When the Apollo craft exceeds mind-bending speeds of 24,000 mph, it all feels a bit like science fiction. To match the scope of the photography, an immersive soundscape brings the explosive qualities of Apollo to life, most notably with the legendary crackle and bass vibration of the Saturn V’s rocket engines. In an added revelation, previously silent film sequences are meticulously lip-synced from audio recordings to restore voices to mute players within Mission Control. It’s enlightening to hear, for the first time, the dialogue of many small yet key figures in the flight programme. Tying all the content together and providing an added sense of drama is a lilting and haunting musical score from Matt Morton. Part orchestral, part electronic, it lends a strangely foreboding radiophonic quality to the action — utilising instruments and period hardware which would only have been available before 1969. Splashing down within a swift 93 minutes, 'Apollo 11' takes you on an intense, explosive and emotional journey. Endlessly enlightening and
intimate, yet never mawkish, it’s a vivid time capsule which replays a world-changing event and puts you in the centre of the action. Many will enjoy the sheer spectacle of the NASA vehicles, the desolate detail in the lunar terrain, or simply delight in its evocation of late Sixties’ Americana. Either way, don't wait for it to land quietly on Netflix — secure a central seat in a cinema and strap yourself in for a full sensory assault. Go for launch.

Sound&Vision
Unsurprisingly, live music is all about the music and the venue is often an afterthought, a container of sound. But, when a deliberate choice has been made regarding the venue, the music just sounds so much better. This was certainly the case when The Manchester Collective, a fine ensemble producing baroque finesse and contemporary electronica to create emotive and atmospheric performances, chose to play in The Crypt at Leeds Town Hall and turned the music into a wider spatial sensation. The evening opened with a performance on Viola de Gamba from a new member of the ensemble Kate Conway. The instrument was strung and fretted with animal intestines complementing the virtuosity of the performer with wonderful authenticity, and ultimately producing an emotive experience for the audience through her performance of Les Voix Humaines. The emotional journey continued with a performance by violinist and longterm member Rakhi Singh, who gave a spine-tingling rendition of Bach’s
Dance Chaconne to close off the first half. She elaborated on the meaning of piece, explaining how Bach had returned home to learn of his wife’s death. This piece of mourning is written as a dance and invokes both a sense of power and powerlessness. With a high bar to vault over, the second half had to produce something magical. The interpretation of Paradise Lost, in collaboration with Sebastian Gainsborough, featured Viola de Gamba and violin again, plus three vocalists and an electronic arrangement. Alice Zawadzki’s operatic voice portrayed Lucifer in a hauntingly ethereal manner, while the more contemporary vocals brought a very relatable sense of humanity to Adam and Eve. Gainsborough’s electronics play with rhythm, or to be more precise the lack of it. What pulses are heard are distant and separate, and with the strings pulling further with the harmony, create a sense of space and scale and almost a void. This audible void echoed within the Crypt, its alcoves playing host to the singers who emerge to recite their lyrics before retreating again, falling in and
out of perception and dragging the listeners ear with them with every return and departure. Within the close confines of the Crypt the experience was exhausting but extremely satisfying. The Manchester Collective is an act to be seen and a sensation to be felt. Details of The Manchester Collective can be found here: https:// manchestercollective.co.uk/paradise By Sam Rayner

MASSC Celebrates its Centenary! Moor Allerton Sports & Social Club (MASSC) is celebrating its centenary with a special Centenary Open Day on Sunday 8th September, 2 – 6pm at its Stonegate Road location opposite the Fire Station, LS17 6EL. MASSC is a sports and social centre in Moortown with dedicated facilities for crown green bowls, snooker and bridge. It has a large hall, used for table tennis and other sporting and fitness activities, as well as for events and meetings. There is also a bar with wide-screen TV. The oldest recorded group meeting on the present site was the Moor Allerton Men’s Club, formed in 1898. The Snooker section was set up in 1920 and Moor Allerton Tennis Club was formed in 1921 with three grass courts, three hard courts followed in 1925 – unfortunately tennis is no longer played. In 1926, Moortown Men’s Bowling Club was formed, and the Table Tennis Club was established in 1947, with matches played
in the Leeds & District Leagues. A Scottish Country Dance group moved in soon afterwards and a number of dance groups still use the Centre on a weekly basis. Leeds Bridge Club became a section in 2000 and now has over 300 members. Rooms continue to be hired out for various activities. The hall and bar are available for hire for groups and events. Facilities are normally available from 9am – 11pm on both weekdays and weekends. For more information, contact Ann O’Grady, Centre Manager, on 0113 265 3294/ 07934 351 051, or annieogr@ hotmail.com

Younger Life ‘Recycle with Michael’ Salvation Army Trading Co Launches Recycling Competition Yorkshire schools are being encouraged to ‘Recycle with Michael’, as part of an initiative by The Salvation Army Trading Company to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothing and shoes away from landfill. Schools that sign up will be challenged to fill as many bags as possible before the end of September 2019, for the chance to be crowned Michael’s recycling champions. The winning school – calculated as the one with the highest ratio of weight to pupils - will receive a trophy, certificate and a special visit from Michael, the scheme’s mascot. Designed for primary school children, the programme is also an important way for schools to generate much-needed funds
- a percentage of the bags’ financial value is donated back to the school to spend how they wish. The remaining funds will go towards supporting The Salvation Army’s important work helping vulnerable people in communities across the UK. The scheme aims to educate young people about the importance of recycling in a fun and engaging way. It is supported by free downloadable presentations, posters and lesson plans which stress environmental and charitable messages. “We hope our competition will encourage children and their families to give unwanted items a new lease of life”, said Kirk Bradley, Head of Corporate Partnerships at The Salvation Army Trading Company. “The initiative not only supports local children but also local communities through the work of The Salvation Army to tackle homelessness, poverty, addiction, modern slavery, unemployment and loneliness.” Recycle with Michael is a simple and effective way to deal with the UK’s fastest growing source of household waste – textiles. All donations will be either reused or recycled Schools can register and request bags via https://recyclewithmichael.co.uk/

Calling All Superheroes!
Netball Team is World Champion The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) U-15 netball team recently won the inaugural World Schools Netball Cup. The competition brought top school teams from UK and international schools to Loughborough University in June.
The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) is inviting families to attend its annual Superhero Walk and Family Fun afternoon at Temple Newsam on Sunday 8th September. The 1km sponsored Superhero Walk costs just £15 for family entry, with a suggested fundraising target of £50. Walkers will include families and friends of congenital heart patients, plus young patients themselves, all raising vital funds for the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit. They (and their dogs!) are encouraged to dress as their favourite heroes - Batman, Spiderman, Minions, Peppa Pig, Cat woman and even heart surgeons - who are superheroes to many families. “Whilst our Superhero Walk is a brilliant fundraiser, the family fun day has got bigger every year”, said Charlotte Anderson-Hughes CHSF events manager. “The event celebrates the local superheroes we support as a charity - the patients themselves.” Fancy dress is, of course, optional. CHSF would like local families to go
along, learn about their charity work and have fun too. There will be bouncy castles, children’s rides, face painting, refreshments and much more for everyone to enjoy – and entry is free for the general public. “We’re proud to be sponsoring the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund’s Superhero Walk in September”, said Jayne Kennedy, Marketing Manager, B&M Waste Services who are sponsoring the event. “As longstanding sponsors of the charity, we look forward to continuing our fundraising efforts throughout the year to raise vital funds for the fantastic work that it does.” The Superhero Walk begins at 11.30am in the park near Temple Newsam House, followed by the family fun. Tickets for the Superhero Walk are available via www.chsf.org.uk/events. For further information, contact Charlotte at 0113 831 4810 events@ chsf.org.uk
The U-15 GSAL team were crowned World Schools Netball Champions, losing only one game on their way to the title. Plus, the U-13 team took the bronze medal in their age group. They won six out of their seven group matches but lost a very close semi-final to Jess School, Dubai. “It was an incredible experience, meeting players from many different countries with the chance to compete at the highest level on a world stage”, said Cath Johnson, GSAL head of netball. “The media slot for teams on the first evening, the opening ceremony and the professional staging of the final made it very special for us all.” The World Schools Netball Cup is part of the World School Games Event Series, incorporating a variety of team and individual sports throughout the year and around the world.
A Magical Sleeping Beauty Comes to The Carriageworks Over the last fourteen years, the Carriageworks Theatre’s traditional pantomime has become an unmissable festive treat for families. With its mix of well-known songs, cheeky comedy, great casts, stunning sets, beautiful costumes, it’s a highlight of the Leeds Christmas experience. This year’s production of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ includes Carriageworks’ regular Jez Edwards, now in his eleventh year of panto at the theatre. Jez has appeared in Coronation Street, Emmerdale, and was part of the epic 2018 Sainsbury’s Christmas TV campaign which paid tribute to the soldiers of WW1. Myra Dubois, plays the Wicked Witch, and newcomers Katherine Picar and James Meunier play the Princess and Prince. Katherine recently appeared in the UK tour of Miss Saigon, and James starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Sunset Boulevard’.
Set in a magical castle deep in the forest, a beautiful sleeping Princess cursed by a wicked fairy awaits her rescue by a handsome prince. True to form there’ll be brilliant goodies and baddies, singing, dancing, a wedding and, if you wish hard enough, a happy ever after ending!
Photo: Beauty & The Beast 2018
Sleeping Beauty will run from Friday 22nd November until Saturday 4th January 2020. There will be a special British Sign Language performance on 12th December at 6.30pm, and relaxed performances on 5th and 29th December at 2pm. Tickets: £13 – £20 are available from 0113 376 0318 or www.carriageworkstheatre.co.uk.
Spun together with sumptuous sets, gorgeous fairy tale costumes, big song and dance numbers, a little bit of magic and bags of audience participation, Sleeping Beauty is a spectacular pantomime for all the family. Tickets £13 – £20
