COMMUNITY NEWS
BATTLE FOR NEW HYDE PARK COMMUNITY CENTRE CONTINUES The Royal Park Community Consortium (RPCC) continues its battle to renovate the Royal Park School building and turn it into a brand new community centre for Hyde Park. However, in order to get the necessary funds in place, Leeds City Council’s current deadline must be extended. An extension of two years would provide us with the time necessary to raise the £750,000 needed to purchase the lease for the building and complete the first phase of refurbishment. The viability and professionalism of the RPCC’s campaign was recently acknowledged by Michael Burns, an investment analyst working with the Community Builders funding body. “The RPCC was able to complete our due diligence process and to provide the full set of information required, including full business plan, three year cash flow and supporting evidence on projected income and cost streams, for both refurbishment activities and for operations, which led to the AIP being awarded”, he said. “The External Investment Committee also commended RPCC for their well developed base of public support and their ability to mobilise volunteers.”
Since the awarding of the lease rights to the RPCC in January, the economic situation, and the government’s reorganisation of a number of funders, has made fund raising an even more complex task. As a result, the fundraising team needs more time to prepare and submit bids. The ineligibility – due to postcode rules - of the Royal Park project for key funding sources such as the National Lottery-backed Reaching Communities and the European Regional Development Fund, makes finding the necessary funding even tougher. A new deadline granting the consortium a further two years to locate funds should allow for the successful initiation of redevelopment work.
The Inner North West Area Committee of local councillors recently agreed to lobby the Executive and write a letter of support for an extension to raise the £750,000. The RPCC has also put in its own request, which will go before the LCC Executive in late July. The RPCC is still looking for any new funding streams coming on line for capital expenditure. Efforts are also being made to strengthen the board of directors and management team, recruit more people for the funding bids, and keep the terrific fundraising groups moving forward. They are also still looking to strengthen their Board of Directors and Management Committee and are looking to engage local people for voluntary positions regarding a Chief Executive/Project Director, a Finance Director, a Business Development Director and more Bid Writers

The underlying aim, of course, is to raise £1.8 million, which would secure the promised £823,000 of funding from Community Builders. This would allow the RPCC to purchase the lease and refurbish the entire property. There is a big vote of thanks to Yorkshire Evening Post and North Leeds Life who continue to support the RPCC’s bid by covering the latest developments, and also to the HEART in Headingley, which has been providing the group with a base. CARERS LEEDS - OFFERING SUPPORT TO LOCAL CARERS
Are You a New Invalid Scooter User?
Carers Leeds is a charity providing support to unpaid carers over the age of 18 across Leeds. It has been running for over 15 years and is part of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers and the Carers’ Centre Network.
WHO IS A CARER? A carer is someone who, without payment, looks after another person who couldn’t manage without their help. This could be as a result of sickness, disability, age, or misuse of drugs or alcohol.
WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE? Carers Leeds offers one- to-one information, advice and support from their city centre offices, in the carer’s own home or in a hospital setting. In addition, they provide a range of activities, including information sessions on legal issues facing carers, personal development workshops, wellbeing days, coffee mornings, day or theatre trips. They try to find ways of giving carers a break from caring and providing an opportunity to meet up with other carers for mutual support.
Despite excellent information provided by the Council and the William Merritt Centre, it can sometimes be difficult to obtain all the facts needed before buying a scooter and installing a hoist in a car. Tony Chuter, a new scooter user, encountered some of these difficulties and decided to set up a ‘Leeds Invalid Scooter Association’. “The Association will be a source of mutual help, especially to the newly immobile”, said Tony. “Once established, we should be able to negotiate discounts on purchases and exchange information about various outlets which provide for our needs. Although there has recently been a marked improvement in the facilities for the disabled, there seems to be a place for input from those who are actually experiencing problems.” If you are interested in finding out more, contact Tony Chuter on aj.chuter@btinternet.com
All activities are published in a free bi-monthly newsletter, which also carries information on local and national policy and events that affect carers. The charity runs the Time for Carers Fund on behalf of Leeds City Council, which can give carers some financial help with the cost of a break or holiday. Carers providing over 35 hours a week can apply once every three years. Carers Leeds also runs a number of support groups around the city, and provides support for different types of caring, for example, for those looking after someone with Asperger’s Syndrome. For further information and for a copy of their newsletter, contact Carers Leeds, 6-8 The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 6PT. This month I thought I’d let you know about some issues I’ve been dealing with in the ward.
www.digitelsystems
Firstly, some fly tipping on the corner of Carrholm Road and Stainbeck Road. A resident informed me that a number of bags of garden waste that had been dumped on the grass verge. Bizarrely, the bags had Leeds City Council logos on them. I asked council officers to investigate and their response was reassuring. They took the problem very seriously and will prosecute if at all possible. Fly-tipping costs councils something in the region of £100 a minute. I’m sure I’m not the only one to find this astonishingly high and anything that can be done to help tackle the issue is to be welcomed. I’ve suggested that we use the new area based street cleansing teams to routinely visit spots that we know are regularly used for fly-tipping. This would help clean up any rubbish dumped there quicker, and perhaps catch some of the perpetrators. The officers I spoke to seemed fairly positive that they might be able to do this. We’ve had some good news about flood prevention work on Scott Hall Road which is very prone to flooding. In August 2004 residents may remember that there was particularly severe flooding, as there was in many parts of Leeds that year. With climate change taking hold, the risk of flooding seems to be increasing, so it’s something we need to take seriously. One of the main ways of tackling this is through better drainage. If drains and sewers aren’t properly maintained they’re unable to cope when there’s really heavy rainfall and overflow. Brenda Lancaster did a lot of work to try and improve the maintenance of drains and sewers and managed to convince Yorkshire Water to start taking their obligations in this area much more seriously. But, of course, it’s the responsibility of the council to keep the drains and gulleys at the side of the road clean. So I was also pleased to learn recently that the council is also taking this issue seriously. From October this year, gullies are to be cleaned twice as regularly as is currently the case. This is an ongoing issue and there is always more that could be done, but I’m hopeful that these cumulative differences will have a noticeable effect when there’s bad weather in the future.

This May saw a change in Headingley’s political landscape with the loss of James Monaghan’s seat to Labour. I’ll not dwell on the result, suffice to take this opportunity to thank James for his five years of dedicated service to the council and the residents of Headingley. James was one of the hardest working councillors I’ve seen in Leeds and I know that he was heartened by the many messages of thanks he received from local residents
CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence
The inquiry into the plans for the former Leeds Girls’ High School took place recently. I’m in full agreement with the overwhelming majority of local opinion that it would be a travesty for the local area if these plans were allowed to go ahead. Not only would it deface a building that’s integrally woven into Headingley’s aesthetic fabric, but it offers virtually no benefits to local families and would lead to major problems with traffic. The Leeds Girls’ High School Action Group made an excellent submission to the inquiry that clearly set out why this has caused so much anger in Headingley. I hope this made the same impression on the inspector that it did on the rest of us. We’re well into summer now and are still seeing problems with bins. This time the council has delivered a load of wheelie bins to a number of terraced streets in Headingley. Unfortunately there’s nowhere to store the bins, which means they are left out in the street. So we’ve seen yet more blocked pavements, causing problems for parents with prams or pushchairs or pedestrians with mobility problems. But anyone who knows the area will tell you that the problem isn’t a lack of bins, it’s a lack of collections. Instead of buying a load of new bins, the council should be spending the money on more collections. This is what local residents really need to fix the problem. I am continuing to fight for radically improved refuse and recycling services that fit the Headingley and Hyde Park area – not a ‘one-size fits all’ service. As always if anyone has anything they would like to raise with me, please do not hesitate to contact me. Councillor Jamie Matthews Liberal Democrat Headingley Ward Tel: 0113 247 4580

LEEDS GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL PUBLIC INQUIRY
FAR HEADINGLEY, WEETWOOD AND WEST PARK
The long-running saga of the redevelopment of the Leeds Girls’ High School site is nearing its end – at least for now. Four and a half years after ideas for development were first outlined at a poorly advertised and poorly attended exhibition in December 2006, the latest plans were the subject of a Public Inquiry held at Leeds Civic Hall last month. Inspector John Gray, an architect by training, heard appeals from the School on their plans. He took evidence from the School, the Council, and four community groups – Leeds Girls’ High School Action Group, Friends of Woodhouse Moor, Inner Leeds Health Monitor and Headingley Tennis Club.
When it was published in 2005 the Far Headingley NDS was the first truly urban Design Statement within a large UK metropolitan area. Ten groups representing 10 distinctive areas of suburban North Leeds came together and went through a three year local consultation process to produce a booklet designed to inform property owners and developers about the area, and to promote good development.
Debate centred on conservation and planning issues – the impact of the proposals on the conservation area, particularly the setting of Rose Court and the main school building; the loss of open space and trees; the proposals for demolishing parts of the main school building and altering the interior of Rose Court; and the lay-out and design of new buildings. But there was also lengthy discussion of the need for additional recreational space for local people and schools, for which the protected playing pitches on the site would be ideal, and the importance of exercise in improving the health of local people. The Inspector will now consider all that he has heard, and the mountains of paper he has received, and come to a decision, which is expected in August. Pam Bone Chair, Leeds Girls’ High School Action Group
NEIGHBOURHOOD DESIGN STATEMENT
Among other things, the 2005 NDS recommended boundary changes to two conservation areas and the creation of a third conservation area based around Edwardian Arts and Crafts housing at West Park. Today those changes have happened. The 2005 NDS offered guidelines for appropriate development on key sites. Some of those sites have now been developed and generally the NDS guidelines have been applied. The 2005 NDS anticipated Leeds Supertram, which is now scrapped, and considered the threat to family housing from HMO development, when student numbers were rising fast. In 2011 the issues have moved on and the design statement needs updating. In June, representatives from seven resident associations met and agreed to work together through the process required to redraft, reconsult and republish an up to date version of the NDS led, once again, by our town planning consultant Peter Baker and supported by our Ward Councillors. In July Peter led an afternoon workshop equipping resident groups with the tools and understanding required to reevaluate their area. Information gathered from grass roots consultation will inform the first draft which will then be the subject of a public exhibition. A second draft will follow, together with formal consultation with Council planning departments and statutory consultees. The timetable to publication of the new edition is expected to take around 12 months. I urge everyone who loves where they live but thinks it could be better, to get involved and make sure their comments are heard and fully considered. SOROPTIMISTS ‘ANY QUESTIONS’ A GREAT SUCCESS Yorkshire Soroptimists were delighted that in their 75th anniversary year they were chosen to host an episode of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Any Questions’ in Victoria Hall, Saltaire. The broadcast was on 24th June, and was a great success. The panelists were David Davis conservative MP for Haltemprice and Howden, Mary Creagh MP for Wakefield, Fraser Nelson editor of the Spectator, and Jason Cowley editor of the New Statesman, and the discussions were lively and very entertaining. Questions included: “Why do the perpetrators of crimes appear to have more rights than their innocent victims?”, “Are U-turns a sign of a listening government or a weak government?”
The final question addressed the suggestion by the Royal College of Psychiatrists that people over 65 should reduce their alcohol intake to no more that 11 units per week. During the discussion, Mary Creagh said that this reduction “may not lead to living longer, but it would certainly feel like it!” A poll of the audience indicated that 100% said that the advice would be ignored, and Jonathan Dimbleby declared: “The people of Soroptimist International of Saltaire have spoken!” Soroptimist International is a global network of women working to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide. St Gemma’s, based in Moortown, provides specialist medical and nursing care for people with life threatening illnesses, and support for their families too. The care provided is free of charge, so St Gemma’s relies on donations and local fundraising initiatives. “We already have several contestants lined up”, said event organiser Tara Greatorex. “So, we would encourage people to contact us quickly if they would like to take part.”

THEY LIVED IN HEADINGLEY HUBERT DALWOOD (1924-1976) SCULPTOR
In 1950 the University of Leeds set up an exciting and imaginative scheme for fellowships in the creative arts, the Gregory Fellowships, named after their patron Eric Craven Gregory, a Bradford businessman committed to the arts and to fostering young talent. The three-year fellowships were offered in poetry, painting, sculpture and music, and were to be awarded to young practising artists, selected by an eminent panel of advisors. The fellowships brought to Leeds some of the most interesting and innovative young artists of the day, many of whom went on to win national acclaim. Most of them were housed in Headingley, in a University house in Cottage Road, during their fellowship. One who came and chose to stay on afterwards was the sculptor, Hubert Dalwood, who was awarded a Fellowship in 1955, when he was 31. His selection interview at the University must have been pretty daunting, as the two interviewers were T.S. Eliot and Henry Moore.
His work, abstract and cryptic, was admired and he received several commissions for public works, one of them in 1961 from the University of Leeds for its newlybuilt hall of residence, Bodington Hall at Lawnswood. His huge aluminium bas-relief is a striking feature of the main refectory block, familiar over the years to many thousands of Leeds students. Around the same time he finally left Leeds for London, and, after a few years in part-time teaching and overseas travel, he was appointed head of sculpture at Hornsey College of Art, and six years later head of sculpture at the Central School of Art and Design. He continued to develop his interests in the relationship between sculpture and landscape and in architectural structures, and his work featured in several exhibitions, but his life and his creative potential were tragically cut short in 1976, when he died aged only 52. His first wife, Mary Dalwood, stayed on in Headingley after he left for London. A lecturer in French at the University of York and a literary translator, she was also well-known in Leeds as an active and committed Labour Councillor. She died in 1991. Their two daughters are both artists. There has been a revival of interest in Hubert Dalwood and his work in recent years. A book about his sculpture was published in 1999, and last year a major exhibition of his work called Hubert Dalwood: Landscape into Sculpture was held at Leeds Art Gallery, which has several of his sculptures in its collection. His work can be found in many galleries and collections in this country and overseas, and the new Hepworth gallery at Wakefield features two of his works. When he died, he was described as ‘one of the best artists of his generation, a man who could have civilised and enlivened our cities and fired our imagination’. Eveleigh Bradford
Eveleigh Bradford Hubert Dalwood, usually known as ‘Nibs’, was born in Bristol. He left school at 16 to be apprenticed at the Bristol Aeroplane Company, but used his free time to study at the Bristol School of Art. After two years national service in the Royal Navy he entered the pioneering Bath Academy of Arts to study sculpture, and then won a travelling scholarship to Italy. Here he met his first wife, Mary, a university lecturer. Back in Britain, his first job was at the Newport School of Art. His work met with some success, and he had his first one-man exhibition in London in 1954, just before he came to Leeds. In Leeds he became part of a vibrant group of innovative artists and teachers centred on the Leeds College of Art, and when his Fellowship ended he stayed on to teach there. These years were among his most creative and successful. In 1958 he won first prize in the John Moore’s exhibition in Liverpool, and in 1962 he represented the UK at the Venice Biennale, where he also won a major prize. 16 August 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
HEADINGLEY ‘THIS PLEASANT RURAL VILLAGE’ by Eveleigh Bradford
This is a fascinating history of the Headingley area. Beautifully presented, it is full of interesting facts and people, period photographs and maps, and traces how Headingley grew in the 19C from a country village to a lively bustling centre. Pick up your copy (paper back £13, hardback £20) from North Leeds Life offices at 265a Otley Road, LS16 5LN.
Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon High summer is an opportune time to search for two closely related species found sparingly in the Yorkshire uplands. Stonechats and whinchats are small, chunky, upright birds which like to perch on the top of bushes or tall plants. With their black head and chin, white neck-side patch, reddishorange undersides and blackish back and tail, male stonechats look very smart. Constantly flicking their tail and moving about, they have a scolding “tsak tsak” call.
THE U FILES
IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY… Place names and history always raise more questions than answers, for instance several woods have given their names to the area, some with more obvious origins than others. On the 1836-51 maps, Queen’s Wood was not marked, shown only as a plantation. But, to be fair, Queen Victoria only came to the throne in 1837. By 1890 it had grown up to be a wood on the ordinance survey map. Much older woods were Church Wood, adjacent to the church, and Batcliffe Wood, which was adjacent to an old quarry, and might well have been of interest to BBC’s Spring Watch and Bill Oddy (or is he only interested in birds?). Incidentally, another wood shown on the 1836-51 tithe map was Oddy Wood, pretty certain not to have been connected with bats or Bill! A smallish wood of two acres, two roods and nine perches, intriguingly by the time of the 1890 ordinance survey map it had acquired the name Cowgill Wood. No idea at all as to where either of these names came from.
Similar in appearance, is the male whinchat though it has a prominent white stripe above the eye and lacks the white neck patch. Females of both species are brownish above and orange-brown below and are best told apart by the pale stripe above the eye on the whinchat. The latter has a persistent alarm cal “yu tek tek”.
While whinchats are summer visitors from Africa, stonechats are resident, though move to the milder coast in winter. They both prefer open cover with low vegetation, typically heaths and moors, but stonechats also like bushy areas near coastal cliffs and whinchats sometimes frequent damp areas such as tussocky grassland and water meadows. These birds are experiencing contrasting fortunes. Stonechats have increased and spread in recent times though the exceptional conditions late last year seem to have set them back. A sharp decline in numbers of whinchats is as yet unexplained but circumstances in their wintering quarters could be a cause.
Arts and Culture pages 26 - 28
A less puzzling name change can be seen for Hill Wood, just off Spen Lane on the slopes leading down to Kirkstall Abbey. By 1890, thanks no doubt to mis-hearing or artistic license, this had become Hell Wood, and included a small stream marked on the map as Hell Hole Gill, giving the less contentious part of its name to today’s Ghyll Road. As can be seen from the photograph, Oddy or Cowgill Wood still survives today, minus a few roods and perches, amidst the gardens of the housing development between Kepstorn Road, Harrowby Road and Northolme Crescent. GARDENROUND-UP ROUND-UP By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural
............................................... It’s late summer and gardens are ablaze with colour, not only perennials but also shrubs. Hardy fuchsias are often overlooked for late summer borders, many people don’t realise that there is a great selection. They are a lovely plant to include in pots, hanging baskets and borders, and should be taken into the greenhouse for over wintering. Prune back stems to just above the third joint and water only when the stems appear to be drying up until April, then increase to restart growth. Keep them indoors until all danger of frost has passed and harden off before placing outside.
Have a go at growing honeysuckle as a standard, and wisterias, which can be spectacular but need a lifetime of support and regular pruning both summer and winter to keep it compact. The honeysuckle will have more impact when growing along trellises and fencing, plus the scent will be knockout. If training standards in pots use John Innes No.3, as this contains soil which is heavier than peat-based compost.
18 August | northleedslife.co.uk
To train a shrub, plant into a pot when young with a straight sturdy stem cut off the lowest branches so they are flush with the main stem. When it reaches the desired height pinch out the top tip to make the head branch out and form a ball. Keep removing all the buds or branches that appear on the stem, this is one way of growing these plants and leaves room underneath for low growing plants. In the vegetable garden, you can begin sowing spring cabbage for winter from the middle of the month. Keep the seed beds moist and after about six weeks they will be ready to transplant to the prepared ground. Try some oriental vegetables to use in stir-fries – sow Chinese broccoli and harvest tender young plants whole when flowering shoots appear. Sow a fast growing Chinese cabbage four weeks later – cut the stem leaving about and inch above the ground for re growth. Taller varieties will develop a white tender heart if you hold the leaves together with elastic bands.

A new Yorkshire-based network to further the study of women’s history was launched at Leeds Trinity University College tin June. The Yorkshire Women’s History Network welcomes members from across the region, men and women, who have an interest in women’s history.
Heart Research UK is running two exciting new text draws, giving supporters a chance to win fantastic prizes – and it’s so easy to enter. Gardening enthusiasts could win £1,000 worth of landscaping products from Bradstone. The company’s current range includes modern and traditional products, including paving and walling, to give your garden and patio a fresh new look. All you have to do is text heart45 to 70099 by 26 August. Texts cost £5 plus one message at your standard rate with a minimum of £4.39 going to Heart Research UK.
“Women’s history has always been about the hands-on practice of history”, said Professor Karen Sayer, Programme Leader for History at Leeds Trinity, who coordinated the event. “Women were largely hidden from history until the 1970s, in terms of where they were placed in society and also because of the choices made by historians, so the study of women’s history has been a growth area in recent decades.

AUF WIEDERSEHEN PETS!
With Summer bursting out all over, we started thinking about people going on holiday. Whether it’s for a weekend, a week or two, one of the biggest worries is who is going to look after your pet. As a previous pet owner, I know that pets have ways of punishing their owners for their abandonment. Our cat, Mojo, (so named because when she had her mojo workin’ - i.e. when she was purring – you knew it!) would nag us for hours after we retrieved her. Once she even left a very unwelcome package on our son’s bed in protest. Oh yes, they have ways of making you feel really guilty and they milk it for all it is worth! What can we do to make this a less stressful experience for our pets and for ourselves? We decided to ask a couple of people who regularly look after people’s pets.
Heather and Bob Winter at Moochin’ the Pooch (www. moochinthepooch.co.uk) are dog lovers with a handle on dog psychology. They aim to keep your pets happy while you’re away, or even while you’re at work. Here are some of their suggestions: • Make sure your dog has a safe haven of its own, such as an open cage (den) or bed – and if you’re going away make sure you take this to the boarder or kennels. • A great way to help your dog settle is to sleep with a towel in your bed for a couple of nights, then leave this with your dog (in their bed preferably) when you leave for work or go away – that way they will have your scent with them. • Don’t make a big fuss when you leave, don’t jangle car keys or alert them to the fact that you are leaving them. • When leaving your pet to go to work, don’t have the same routine every day as they become conditioned and know exactly when you’re leaving which can cause stress. • Give your pet a toy which contains treats that they have to work for, and give this to them a few minutes before leaving, this can take their minds off you leaving and they won’t be as stressed. • Make sure your dog gets enough exercise – this is a great stress reliever. •

DON’T LEAVE IT ‘TIL THE LAST MINUTE! Greengates Cattery (www.greengatescattery.com) on Otley Old Road between Cookridge and Otley, had some wise words – Plan ahead! Certainly don’t leave it until the week before you leave to try and book your pet into a cattery. Here are their suggestions: • You and your pet are unique – find a facility that suits you •
Visit several catteries and see how they are run
•
Find out who will actually be looking after your pet
•
What food will be fed to your pet
•
How clean is the facility
•
What is their policy on veterinary treatment
• Can they provide for special needs like diabetic or elderly pets The main message is: don’t make do, make sure the boarding cattery or kennels you choose meets your expectations and suits your pets’ needs. Of course, you could decide to leave your pet at home and upset them as little as possible – you don’t abandon completely you understand, you just ask someone like Chris from City Cats and Dogs (www.citycatsanddogs. co.uk) to visit regularly and see to their every need. Chris visits cats and dogs all over North Leeds.

LET’S WALK THE DOG! Rob Godfrey from Otley recently came up with the brilliant idea of a publishing guide for dog walkers! Yorkshire Dales: A Dog Walker’s Guide documents 20 circular routes designed with maximum off-lead time and minimum exposure to roads. They vary in length from three to nine miles. Each walk has information on the distance and terrain, livestock likely to be encountered, number and type of stiles and, in an emergency, the nearest veterinary surgery. In addition to the clear, numbered route instructions, each section includes a matching numbered map, information on how to get to the start, places of interest, and local pubs and cafes which welcome dogs.
The routes include walks from the picturesque village of Langcliffe onto the surrounding limestone hills; beside tranquil Malham Tarn; along Buckden Rake to Stake Moss; from Arkengarthdale to imposing Fremington Edge; and beside the stunning Aysgarth Falls along the river Ure. “When you own a dog, walking can be great fun, seeing your best friend enjoying the open spaces, stretching their legs and enjoying all the sights and smells”, says Rob. “All the walks in this book include areas where your dog can be let off the lead for a paddle, a run, and a good sniff around in the woods, fields or open moors. Happy walking!” Yorkshire Dales: A Dog Walker’s Guide is published by Countryside Books (£7.99) and is available from all good booksellers and direct from www.countrysidebooks.co.uk
WIN A COPY! We have five copies of Rob’s book. For your chance to win one of these, just name one of the walks included and email your answer to competitions@northleedslife.co.uk by 31st August 2011.

Rob and his springer spaniel, Charlie, live in Otley. “I know from my own experience’, says Rob, “that it is hard to be sure, once you are off your home patch, where you can walk safely with your dog without the frustration of getting lost, finding your route blocked with impassable stiles or encountering busy roads. I have put together this collection of dog-friendly walks so that others can discover the breathtaking countryside of the Yorkshire Dales without these frustrations.”

WARRIORS OF THE PLAINS AT LOTHERTON HALL ‘Warriors of the Plains’ at Lotherton Hall, a new touring exhibition from the British Museum, runs until 25th September and gives a fascinating insight into the lives of the warrior societies of the Native Americans. The exhibition explores the understandings of honour, status and ritual amongst the indigenous peoples of the North American plains from 1800 to the present day, highlighting the relevance of the warrior legacy for contemporary Native American identity. Unique and fragile material from the British Museum collections will be on display for the first time, including feather headdresses, weapons, military insignia, ledger drawings and a beaded military cap, as well as modern regalia of contemporary Native Americans, or ‘modern warriors’. Highlights of the exhibition include objects that represent diplomacy and peace treaties, such as pipes and complementary items of bravery and honour, such as clubs and pipe-tomahawks. The exhibition makes full use of the British Museum’s large American collections, incorporating old photographs and a series of pictures of war dances among contemporary Native Americans. “This new exhibition will run alongside our already very popular ‘Native Americans of the Plains’ exhibition, which has been delighting visitors with a fascinating look into the life and culture of the first Americans”, said Antonia Lovelace, Curator of World Cultures. “It’s a must for fans of early American history.” For further information, call 0113 281 3259 or visit www. leeds.gov.uk/lothertonhall

WALTER C. FOSTER EXHIBITION AT HEART
LOCAL WRITER HEADS FOR EDINBURGH FRINGE
Some years ago, Dave Foster of Headingley unearthed a cache of work by his grandfather, Walter C. Foster ARCA, hidden in the loft or the family home. He spent years restoring Walter’s work to exhibition standard and last year Dave organised six highly acclaimed one-man exhibitions of Walter’s pictures. They can now be found in homes around the world.
Alwoodley-based writer and director Jan Perry is taking her award-winning play CLICK to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011.
“Since taking on the responsibility of the curatorship of the collection I have been delighted at the public’s reaction”, said Dave. “I have been working for 10 years on cataloguing, restoration and fine art reproductions and to have had such positive reaction makes me feel very privileged to be in control of the promotion of my grandfather’s work. I’m delighted to now be showing his work at HEART.” Walter’s prints can also be found at Jackdaw in central Headingley, and at Mellors in Far Headingley. The exhibition at HEART, Bennett Road, Headingley, runs from 6th August – 29th September.

CLICK won the Windsor Marriott Award for New Drama Writing 2010, and Best Senior Play, Audience Prize, Artistic Originality Award, Best Producer and Best Actress at the Nidderdale Drama Festival. It tells the story of Nell, an elderly woman, who recalls the parental battles that characterised her childhood and upbringing. As her recollections of times past unfold, the play swings between past and present, from childhood to old age, the memories and secrets clicking seamlessly into place, crowding in on Nell relentlessly until the grip of the past overwhelms and engulfs her.
Nell is played by Jan Thomas, Mum by Ellen Shorrock, and Dad by Andy Price.

BOOK REVIEW
American Psycho
This light and frothy summer read is a By Bret Easton Ellis real guilty pleasure, a Reviewed by page turner so urgently Daniel Fitzhugh moreish that you’ll want Oxfam Book Group to take it intravenously. At the very least, it demands a comfy sofa and big tub of lemon sorbet. Patrick Bateman is a steroid-fuelled yuppie cliché, another prime stud on the Wall Street testosterone carousel. But alpha-male supremacy is by no means assured. Dorsia will not give him dinner reservations. The near-mythical ‘Fisher Account’ remains elusive. Space and time do not bend to his will. He is not yet a destroyer of worlds. He cannot see into the hearts and minds of every man, woman and child on this earth. He is afflicted with the nihilism of over-accumulation. He fears nothing and values nothing. His goals are unrealistic, and his means of achieving them, impractical. He rests comfortably in a seat of inscrutable power, life shrouded in secrecy, even from friends. He is an unreliable narrator. Did he kill these people or was it all just a 1980s dream sequence like in Dallas? Peel back the deep-pore cleansing facial and the exfoliating body scrub, and what lies beneath?
Oxfam Book Club meets at Oxfam Bookshop, Headingley, 1st Thursday of each month, 7.30pm. Further information: jessgoodacre@hotmail.com
The book has been labelled misogynistic, and deservedly. ‘Satire’ is no defence. ‘Postmodernism’ is just a cheap trick to avoid having to say you’re sorry. The book makes no apologies, but probably should. It’s a postmodern pop classic as powerful as Phil Collins’ drumming, with moments of tenderness that surpass anything in the Whitney Houston playbook. But at what cost?
THE HEPWORTH WELCOMES ITS 100,000TH VISITOR! The Hepworth Wakefield, Yorkshire’s major new art gallery, has welcomed its 100,000th visitor - less than five weeks after opening, outstripping all expectations. Visitor numbers now looking to far exceed the first year’s target of 150,000. “We are absolutely thrilled to reach the 100,000 milestone so early in our opening year”, said Simon Wallis, Director of The Hepworth Wakefield. “We’ve had visitors travelling from as far Japan, France and even Australia, to spend a cultural weekend in Yorkshire, and take in The Hepworth Wakefield, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Henry Moore Institute and Leeds Art Gallery. While it’s a great achievement, we know we have to continue the hard work to ensure we build on this early success and continue putting Wakefield and Yorkshire on the map.”
The gallery has already provided a huge boost to the local economy. With tourists visiting a top national attraction like The Hepworth Wakefield spending an estimated average of £21 each, the first 100,000 visitors to the gallery will have generated £2m worth of income for the local economy, with money being spent in local shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs, other attractions and hotels. Admission to the gallery is free, Eva Rothschild Hot Touch is showing until 22 October. LEEDS WEST INDIAN CARNIVAL This August Bank Holiday weekend the vibrant spectacle of Leeds West Indian Carnival returns to bring a dose of Caribbean spice to the city. Now in its 44th year, the festival is one of the largest of its kind in the UK, second only to London’s Notting Hill Carnival, with over five hundred people taking part. Carnival founder, Arthur France, is enormously pleased with the ongoing success of the event and says the Leeds carnival continues to improve year on year. “What distinguishes the local event”, says Arthur, “is the fact that it remains traditional
The weekend will feature a number of typically colorful and flamboyant events, including the crowning of the carnival king and queen, a J’ouvert morning, and culminating in the carnival parade on Bank Holiday Monday. The parade will wend its way through the streets of Harehills and Chapeltown before winding up in Potternewton Park for the judging of the costumes, refreshments from the many food and drink stalls and a performance by the New World Steel Orchestra. This year’s carnival promises to be a riotous celebration of the diverse culture that makes our city great. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes! We’ll see you there.

HEADINGLEY MUSIC FESTIVAL ANOTHER SUCCESS!
PAUL MERTON TO PRESENT SILENT CLOWNS AT LEEDS FILM FEST Paul Merton will present a night devoted to silent film comedy genius at the Leeds International Film Festival (3rd – 20th November). Silent Clowns will feature the Harold Lloyd classic Safety Last! plus Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy in hilarious extracts, all introduced by Merton and accompanied by world-renowned pianist Neil Brand and the Prima Vista Social Club band. Live in the stunning setting of Leeds Town Hall with a giant cinema screen, Silent Clowns will be an unmissable and laughter-filled highlight of the year for all fans of film, music and comedy.
As Headingley’s second Music Festival (HMF), which was held June, drew to a close, the committee was feeling tired but happy. This year the festival was moved from May to June in the hope of better weather and lighter evenings..... well, the evenings were certainly lighter! However, the variable weather didn’t deter people from attending the wide range of musical delights on offer – from classical music and poetry, through to jazz, blues, klezmer, Irish, folk and gospel. As a community music festival, the aim was to involve as wide a spectrum of ages as possible and this year was no exception. Saturday 18th June saw a fabulous Youth Music Day at Shire Oak Primary, featuring students ranging in age from eight to 18 playing scintillating rock, acoustic , jazz and percussion. Plus there were free music workshops. That same afternoon, the best tea dance in Leeds took place at HEART, with couples in their 20s dancing alongside those in their 80s, to the strains of acoustic bass, guitar and baritone sax! There was a fantastic variety of music, including artists like Bassa Bassa, Serious Sam Barrett Steve Phillips, Solaris, the Shuffle Monsters, Brendan Croker and the Kane Sisters and the gospel choir conducted by the Reverend Chunky Butt Funky. And venues included Salvo’s, Cafe Lento, South Parade Baptist Church, Citrus, HEART, New Headingley Club, St. Michael’s Church Hall and Shire Oak Primary School. The committee would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help, all the artists who played, all the sponsors – Leeds City Council, Headingley Development Trust, the Co-op, arts @ leeds, Waitrose, Pizza Express – and the audience who came and enjoyed the music. Roll on HMF2012!

LEEDS FESTIVAL FRINGE 18TH – 24TH AUGUST
Leeds Festival Fringe is a seven day event held across a number of venues in Leeds in the week prior to Leeds Festival, showcasing local talent before the main festival hits town. This is the second year of the festival and organisers have been overwhelmed by the amount of interest in it. They have received applications to play from all over the UK, Europe and as far away as Australia! And, the vast majority of performers from last year have asked to be involved again.
Amongst the bands playing on the Friday are alternative rockers Down The Machine, who draw inspiration from Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden, whilst Saturday night’s headlining act are ‘revolutionary Leeds rock metal band’ Mishkin, who recently came third in the Red Bull Bedroom Jam out of 600 bands. Other bands playing over the weekend include KarmaSlave, who will close the festival on Sunday evening. “Public interest has been tremendous”, said organiser Neil Short. “The number of bands from all over the country applying to play and the response in general has been a little overwhelming! So much so, that as soon as MF2011 ends, I think we’ll start planning MF2012!”
This year there are two new elements – the first ever Metal Fringe at Empire, and on Saturday 20th August, Fringe Festival will take over the city centre. The main stage will be on Briggate, outside Debenhams, and will feature music, dance, fashion, drama and comedy. The whole event will be broadcasted live by East Leeds FM. Plus there will be a mass busking event. The Acoustic Fringe will be running once again with The Dunwell Brothers headlining on the Saturday night. Venues include Carpe Diem, The New Conservatory, Milo, Dry Dock, Empire, Northern Monkey, The Well and The Ship. Many of the events will be free but an all week ticket which gets you in to all gigs is just £5 from HMV, Crash or Jumbo For full details go to www.leedsfestivalfringe.org
IT’S A FIRST! METAL FRINGE 2011 MF2011 (Metal Fringe 2011), part of the Leeds Fringe and the first of its kind in the city, will showcase local talent from the metal music persuasion in the week leading up to Leeds Festival. Eighteen bands from across the city and beyond will come together to play three nights of alternative rock (Friday), metal (Saturday) and hard rock (Sunday), to raise money for Martin House Children’s Hospice.

As Annie struggles to cope with the numerous challenges of arranging her friend’s bridal shower she is outdone at every turn by the wealthy Helen which eventually leads to Annie’s hysterical meltdown.
BRIDESMAIDS
Directed by: Paul Feig Starring: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Chris O’Dowd
Kristen Wiig, along with Tina Fey, is one of a number of female comics who, having graduated from the fertile comedic breeding ground of Saturday Night Live, is challenging the opinion that women aren’t funny. With this feature, in which she stars and also co wrote, she has scored a triumph and marked herself out as one to watch. Bridesmaids is also the latest release from Judd Apatow’s production company, the Hollywood comedy impresario behind Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin. As with other Apatow productions, Bridesmaids skillfully balances goofiness, vulgarity and heartfelt sentiment. Wiig plays Annie, a down on her luck singleton struggling with life’s disappointments and indulging in ill advised sexual dalliances with the wrong kind of guy, notably, dashing douchebag, Ted, played with sublime sleaziness by Jon Hamm, AKA Mad Men’s Don Draper. When Annie’s lifelong friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph) announces her engagement and asks Annie to be her maid of honour, Annie is made more acutely aware of the lack of direction in her own life while wanting to do the best for her friend. Things begin to go downhill at the engagement party when Annie is introduced to the simpering, effortlessly stylish Helen, her new rival for best friend status. A hilarious bout of one-up-woman-ship ensues.

Arriving hot on the heels of The Hangover’s same-jokesdifferent-city sequel/remake, Bridesmaids has inevitably drawn comparisons to Todd Phillips’ boorish stag weekend farce. While The Hangover certainly wasn’t short on laughs, it was more than a little lacking in subtlety. This is where Bridesmaids has the edge and proves itself a smarter, more satisfying film, rising far above the poor standard of generic female oriented chick-flick rom-coms. That said, Bridesmaids can still hold it’s own against it’s more testosterone fuelled counterparts in the gross-out stakes, particularly in one already infamous scene involving an outbreak of food poisoning in a bridalwear showroom. With believably flawed central characters, witty, nuanced scripting and standout comic performances, especially from Wiig and Mellissa McCarthy as Lillian’s sister-in-law-to-be, Bridesmaids is both howlingly funny and genuinely touching, destined to become a comedy classic.

THE TREE OF LIFE
Directed by: Terrence Malick Starring: Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain
With a career spanning four decades, Terrence Malick has established himself as one of the heavyweights of American cinema, emerging onto the scene amid illustrious contemporaries (Scorsese, Coppola et al) with his breakthrough film, Badlands, in 1973. Since then he has directed just a handful of features, most considered modern classics, and news of a new Malick project now inspires feverish excitement and anticipation in cinephiles the world over. This latest, The Tree of Life, is a case in point. The trailer alone left me breathless when I watched it a few months ago.
Despite winning the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes festival, The Tree of Life has divided audiences and critics. With its leisurely, almost somnambulistic pacing, astronomical breadth of scope and lofty ambitions, the film has alienated many viewers who deem it too ponderous and dull by half. To say The Tree of Life is an unconventional movie would be grossly understating the fact. It is hard to imagine a cinematic experience more at odds with the standard blockbuster fare clogging up the multiplexes. I’m sure it only made it into my local Vue cinema due to the A-list stars heading up the cast, this is very much an art film.

The Tree of Life isn’t plot driven and doesn’t rely on dramatic narrative. Instead, it’s a meditative, ethereal piece evoking a tone poem rendered in sound and image. Through a prism of reminiscence and nostalgia, Sean Penn’s Jack reflects on his 1950’s childhood growing up in the suburbs of Waco, Texas, in particular his relationship with his strict disciplinarian father (Brad Pitt) and his younger brother. The adult Jack seems adrift, struggling to reconcile his past and gain a sense of his place in the world. While early feminist doctrine asserted that ‘the personal is political’ here Malick makes the personal cosmological, the intimate infinite. In what many no doubt regard as one of the film’s broader strokes, Malick juxtaposes Jack’s remembrance of his formative experiences with the creation of the universe itself and the development of life on earth. The result is a sort of Proustian 2001: A Space Odyssey (the stunning visuals for these cosmic sequences were provided by veteran effects boffin, Douglas Trumbull, who worked similar magic on Kubrick’s Sci-Fi masterpiece). This lengthy portion of the film, along with some of its more surrealistic touches has proved too much for some (the screening I attended sustained a few walkouts), with the limits of people’s indulgence tested by prehistoric nature documentary scenes (including, yes, dinosaurs). However, while there are those who find it all a bit hard to swallow, even the film’s more out-there elements are consistent with otherworldly, dreamlike quality of the piece as a whole. As ever with Malick’s work, the film is technically outstanding , sumptuously photographed with intricate, evocative sound design. The visual style in the suburban set scenes recalls the work of American photographers William Eggleston and Gregory Crewdson while a sparse classical score combines with whispered internal monologue voiceover and ambient, distant white noise to further convey a sense of wonder and awe and a yearning to return to lost innocence. As I’ve said, The Tree of Life frustrates as much as it delights and it’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s utterly unlike anything else out there. For me, the risks Malick has taken with this picture have paid off. He has crafted a mesmerizing metaphysical masterpiece.

LEEDS ROLLER DOLLS HUNT FOR NEW HOME Leeds Roller Dolls, West Yorkshire’s premier roller derby league, are looking for a warehouse space for their demanding training schedule. Formed in 2007, the team have gone from strength to strength and is one of the most highly regarded teams in what must be the nation’s fastest-growing sport. They are currently celebrating a recent convincing victory over Royal Windsor Rollergirls.
LEEDS WHO? ‘THE STORY OF A FORGOTTEN RUGBY CLUB’ BY STUART SHEARD
Leeds Who? is the story of a rugby union club which, for the majority of its sixty seven years, was called Leeds Chirons. The club played on Soldiers’ Field and had changing rooms in the old stables at Roundhay School. The story reflects some of the changes that took place in rugby union between 1923 and 1990. If you have ever been involved with ‘grassroots’ sport, the events and incidents described in this book will revive memories of a much simpler time, an amateur era, when results were important but there were no league tables to worry about. The game of rugby on a Saturday afternoon and the social activities that followed it were the reasons for playing.
As the league expands and takes on new members, Leeds Roller Dolls’ need for a suitable training ground has become increasingly urgent. The league is appealing for help in locating a warehouse space of 7,884 square ft, large enough for a standard roller derby track. They currently trains three times a week, for a total of eight hours but are looking to expand on that. Roller derby is an all-female, full-contact roller-skating sport, recently popularised by the release of the Hollywood film Whip It. The league is a non-profit organisation. If you can help, please contact info@leedsrollerdolls.com
The book attempts to document the way in which the club developed into an important part of the sporting scene in North Leeds in its heyday. By the mid 1970s it was in decline, and by the late 1980s was perhaps no longer relevant as a sporting opportunity. There are contributions from a number of former players and officials, all of whom developed lasting friendships and very powerful memories through their involvement with the club. Some of the memories recounted make it clear just how much of an impact sport can have on peoples’ lives. Leeds Who? is available from Philip Howard Books on Street Lane or www.YPDBooks.com

CASTLEHILL SPONSOR ST CHAD’S BROOMFIELD FOR THIRD YEAR Castlehill Estate Agents, based on Otley Road in Headingley, is backing St Chad’s Broomfield Cricket Club, champions of the Wetherby Cricket League, for the third successive year.
THE CLUB HAS PLAYED AT IN FRONT OF ST CHAD’S CHURCH FOR ALMOST 90 YEARS “We are delighted to support one of the area’s top local clubs”, said Director Paul Lehan. “As well as enjoying success on the field, the club has a very active training programme aimed at encouraging children to take up the sport and is nurturing the pool of young talent that exists in and around Headingley.” The club has played at in front of St Chad’s Church for almost 90 years. Past players include a former vicar, Canon Charles Marshall, who turned out for the club for all forty years that he was incumbent in the parish (1907-1947). It was said that if a parishioner wished to get married at 3pm on a summer Saturday afternoon, he would do his best to persuade the happy couple to hold the ceremony at 2pm - so that he could lead the eleven on to the field at the start of the match.

LEEDS DIVERS MAKE UP OVER HALF TEAM GB
Jack Laugher Photo: Tim Lee
Six members of the City of Leeds diving squad represented Team Great Britain at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai (16 – 31 July), making up over half the Great Britain squad. Divers Jack Laugher, Sarah Barrow, Alicia Blagg, Jenny Cowen, Rebecca Gallantree and Hannah Starling are all part of the 11-strong Team GB squad to have successfully qualified to take on the best in the world in the biggest international diving event of the year. The squad was finalised following British Gas National Diving Championships at the Aquatics Centre at the John Charles Centre, where the City of Leeds divers dominated, claiming 16 medals. The women’s team claimed the overall trophy for the ninth major national event in a row, whilst the men’s team scooped the overall team prize for the first time since 2004.
This was based largely on the success of 16-year-old Jack Laugher, who followed his stunning performance in beating world champion Tom Daley and setting a new British record in the process in the National Cup in February, with another victory in the men’s three-meter individual event. The City of Leeds divers are all part of Leeds City Council’s Diving Training Scheme overseen by senior diving coach Adrian Hinchliffe and former world champion Edwin Jongejans. For further information about the scheme call 0113 395 7363 or email Adrian.hinchliffe@leeds.gov.uk, or Edwin. jongejans@leeds.gov.uk

OPERA NORTH’S ‘LITTLE VOICES’ SCHEDULED TO START IN OCTOBER Opera North’s launch of Little Voices recently was a great success with 30 children aged 0-4 and their parents and carers turning up to raise their voices in preparation for the weekly singing and music masking sessions which begin in October. “Little Voices is an exciting new direction for Opera North”, said Jo Bedford, Education Officer. “The weekly workshops will focus on having fun with the voice and singing. Children
have an amazing ability to replicate and copy what they hear, they will act and react to the music that we will create together. I’m really excited to be a part of such a great new programme and can’t wait to usher in the working week with the sounds of little voices.” Little Voices begins Monday 10th October at 11am and will run weekly during term time for 0-4 year olds. A selection of the sessions will include a visit from a guest artist introducing the children to different activities such as dance and puppetry. Booking for the weekly sessions will be for each individual session. For more information and to be kept up to date with details for different sessions and how to book, contact littlevoices@operanorth.co.uk
LOCAL AUTHOR PUBLISHES A FAMILY FAVOURITE Recently, Ann Flint, who lives in Weetwood had her first book published.....30 years after she originally wrote it! It began life as a bedtime story for her twin daughters who loved theatre and had appeared in numerous plays. They had exhausted all the theatrical children’s books and were complaining. “Don’t worry”, said Ann rather rashly, “I’ll write you one!” So it began. Every evening after putting them to bed she rushed downstairs to write the next chapter in readiness for the following night – there’s nothing like a deadline to concentrate the mind! When it was finished the girls wanted to read it for themselves, so Ann had it typed up, giving each of them a copy.

Years passed. Then one of her daughters remembered the story and gave it to her own daughters to read. They liked it so much Ann was encouraged to rewrite it and get it published. And, here it is. Charlotte’s Curtain Call tells the story of a lonely, friendless girl who is bullied at school. Then a new girl arrives and, much to Charlotte’s surprise, becomes her friend. She introduces Charlotte to local theatre classes and Charlotte is hooked. After appearing on stage with the local theatre company, a TV director sees a photograph of the production and, noticing Charlotte, believes she is right for a part in his next production. He invites her to audition. A great many events conspire to prevent Charlotte from getting to the audition, causing a falling out between herself and Lindsay. Needless to say the misunderstandings are sorted out and all ends well. “I’ve written several books, which are still in a drawer in my appalling handwriting”, said Ann. “And lots more that I began but never finished. But, this is my favourite because it was written with love for my beloved daughters.” northleedslife.co.uk | August 2011 45
SPRING BANK PRIMARY TAKES GYMNASTICS TITLE A group of Spring Bank Primary School pupils, aged eight and nine, represented Leeds at the West Yorkshire Games held recently at Leeds Metropolitan University’s Carnegie Headingley Campus, and won the Gymnastics title! Over 1,000 youngsters from across West Yorkshire took part and Spring Bank’s Year 3/4 advanced team came first in their category. They were able to enter the games after winning the Key Steps Leeds Gymnastics Finals in March.
OVER 1,000 YOUNGSTERS FROM ACROSS WEST YORKSHIRE TOOK PART AND SPRING BANK’S YEAR 3/4 ADVANCED TEAM CAME FIRST IN THEIR CATEGORY. The Games were organised by West Yorkshire Sport. The children really enjoyed taking part in the opening ceremony with the 90 other schools. Together with staff and governors, they were delighted with this fantastic achievement for a small primary school. Special thanks are extended to Jan Sanders and Caroline Mitchell, who run the Key Stage 2 Gym Club after school and who have coached the team. “The children worked hard to get here, coming through the preliminary competition within the Carr Manor cluster, then the Leeds finals to win through and represent Leeds”, said Jan. “We have a strong tradition of gymnastics at Spring Bank, with children competing from Key Stage 1, and it is wonderful to be winners here.”
