This year, Otley Victorian Fayre celebrates its silver jubilee in style by being held on a Sunday for the first time. On Sunday 12th December between 2 – 8pm, the town centre will be closed to traffic to accommodate craft stalls of gifts, homemade produce, roast chestnuts, mulled wine, mince pies, fairground rides and entertainment. Many stallholders and visitors will be in Victorian dress giving the event a really authentic feel. Adding to the Christmas atmosphere is the windowdressing competition and this year’s theme is ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. Children and adults can gather clues from the shop displays and take part in a treasure hunt anagram competition (entry forms in the programme, on sale in various shops, cafes and pubs). And, Otley’s schoolchildren, also in Victorian costume, will be giving heart-warming renditions of popular Christmas songs and carols around the town. “By holding it on a Sunday, we hope to beat last year’s record attendance, a staggering 10,000 people”, said Sara Quin, one of the organisers. “There will be carols, music and food, and it’s a great place to buy your Christmas gifts.” For further information visit www.victorianfayre.co.uk
THE TOWN CENTRE WILL BE CLOSED TO TRAFFIC TO ACCOMMODATE CRAFT STALLS OF GIFTS, HOMEMADE PRODUCE, ROAST CHESTNUTS, MULLED WINE, MINCE PIES, FAIRGROUND RIDES AND ENTERTAINMENT. Free Car Parking Near Lunds of Otley on Westgate, at the point of the road closure. Chevin Coach Park, opposite the cattle market on East Chevin Road will be used by the usual car boot sale until 3pm. Then it will be free car parking for the Victorian Fayre.

A CAMPAIGN FOR FAIRER BUS FARES We’ve all noticed bus fares in Leeds have been creeping up, not so gradually, over the last few months. Now a new campaign called ‘Fairer Fares’ is looking to reduce fares and get a better service. Organiser, Stuart Long, has made numerous complaints to the bus company about buses being late or not turning up and getting replies citing ‘traffic’ and ‘vehicle failure’ as reasons, so he decided to start the campaign. ‘Fairer Fares’ has written to Metro’s Chairman and awaits a time and date for a meeting. Local MPs Greg Mulholland and Rachel Reeves, along with a number of councillors have come out in support of the campaign. More information is available on www.lovinleeds. com/first , where people are welcome to leave comments and sign the petition. Ultimately, Fairer Fares would like to see better regulation under the Local Transport Act 2008, and Quality Contracts which Metro has the power to put in place now, but has chosen not to act upon for the next two years.
FIRSTBUS HAS RAISED THE MINIMUM FARE FROM £1.70 TO £1.90 FOR A ‘LONG HOP’ ON A SINGLE TRIP. A ‘SHORT HOP’ REMAINS AT £1 – FOR JUST FOUR STOPS!
LEEDS GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL RE-DEVELOPMENT PLANS REJECTED! Local residents, councillors and local MP, Greg Mulholland, claimed victory as Leeds City Council Plans Panel West unanimously refused an application for development on protected playing pitches on the former site of Leeds Girls High School. After a two year campaign by residents’ groups to ensure that this site was developed to benefit the whole community, and unsuccessful attempts at dialogue between the School, the developer and the community, Greg Mulholland welcomed the decision made by local councillors to reject the proposed re-development. “I am delighted that councillors have listened to the very strong views expressed by the community of Headingley”, said Greg. “It is clear that the plans proposed would not have been in the long term interest of the area, and there were particular issues around the loss of playing fields that need to be protected. “I would like to congratulate the Leeds Girls High Action Group, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that objections were taken into account. “I will write to the School again to ask them to now meet and genuinely work with the community in Headingley, to come up with plans that will benefit the community and the school.” Pam Bone, Chair of the Leeds Girls High School Action Group, said: “We are delighted with this outcome after all the hard work community members have put in over the past two years. There is now an opportunity for the council, the school and the community to come together and pursue an outcome that pleases all involved.”

NEW WOMEN’S GROUP IN MEANWOOD BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND SUPPORTING WOMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
COUNCILLOR BRENDA LANCASTER In the Year of the Volunteer, I think it is important to recognise the contribution young people, and those who lead them, make to communities. I was reminded of this when I joined 5,000 Rainbows, Brownies and Guides at the Leeds Centenary Finale event at Headingley Carnegie Stadium. At 20:10 on 20.10.2010, the 5,000 young people from Leeds joined in a televised link with Girlguiding UK for the national renewal of the Guide Promise. As a former Girl Guide Leader and ambassador of Girlguiding Leeds, this movement is close to my heart. The Finale event was a wonderful evening as members past and present came together to reaffirm our commitment. Who knows what the next 100 years will bring, but if the achievements of the last century are anything to go by, the coming years will be very special. Earlier this year Mark Harris, former Councillor Richard Harker and I allocated £4,000 of our MICE funding to the uniformed organisations in Moortown and Meanwood. Thank you to all volunteers for giving your time to support our young people. I promised to update you on two issues in our ward: Waitrose –the reported increase in parking problems has been recorded and passed onto the Highways department, Planning, Police and Waitrose. Residents have been invited to a meeting for an update and also to discuss a proposed application to extend opening hours.

HEADINGLEY ‘THIS PLEASANT RURAL VILLAGE’ by Eveleigh Bradford
Woodleas – residents and walkers who use the path around the Woodleas will be relieved to see some maintenance work has been done. This was in response to the meeting I had on site with LCC enforcement officers and the NHS, as reported in last month’s magazine. There remains much work to be completed and the future of the site is still being reviewed.
This is a fascinating history of the Headingley area. Beautifully presented, it is full of interesting facts and people, period photographs and maps, and traces how Headingley grew in the 19C from a country village to a lively bustling centre.

The Volunteering and Community office at Leeds University Union recently introduced its new Community Skills Project. The scheme aims to find students with particular skills or knowledge and link them to volunteering opportunities within local community – this could be anything, from design to accounting. They want the project to appeal to the widest possible array of groups and organisations and
to ensure that students use their skills and knowledge in practical and constructive ways to the benefit of the community. The scheme welcomes registration from charitable and community organisations who may be looking for particular skills. To register your volunteering opportunities, please contact Claire Henly on 0113 380 3125 or email c.henly@leeds.ac.uk
THE NORTH LEEDS LIFE FEATURE
A- Z THE
OF
Christmas
A C D F
B
Alcohol. Copious amounts are consumed throughout the season. People start stocking up in early December as if prohibition were making a comeback. Coca Cola Advert. We all know Christmas doesn’t really start until that Coca Cola ad comes on TV.
E
Dolling Up. Get out those glad rags! There are parties to go to. Dry clean that tux, dust off that ball gown, make a hair appointment and have a facial!
G
Family. Petty arguments spring up, the kids are on a sugar-induced hyperactive rampage, Granny is grumpy in the corner, but we all come together to feast and be merry.
H I
He’s Behind You! What would Christmas be without a cheesy pantomime?
It’s a Wonderful Life. Popcorn, blankets, cosy fire and a Christmas classic.
J K
Baubles. Who knew there were so many varieties? It’s a nightmare! You could just spray paint a couple of golf balls and leave it at that, but every year you are enticed to buy more. Making your own can be fun. Over the years we have collected beautiful decorations – some made by friends and relations, some by children at primary school, some purchased at art or craft fairs. Each one tells a story which is conjured up each time you hang it on a tree. Embarrassing Moments. With all that food, drink, tinsel and the possibility of a karaoke machine, Yuletide is a minefield of embarrassing moments waiting to happen.
Gifts. We spend a great deal of time stressing about what gift to get for whom. Hopefully, you’ve kept your November issues of North Leeds Life and are making use of our Gift Guide!
Jingle Bells. You may not hear bells the rest of the year, but soon as December rolls around, there’s a bell ringing version of every song ever created.
Kids. Of course the season is all about the kids, with their list of demands and attempts to convince us they haven’t been naughty all year (we’ll just brush that month of detentions aside). But at midnight on Christmas Eve, like magic, we’re all kids once more (clearly, we’ve watched that Coca Cola advert one too many times).
N O R
S
T W
Y
Negotiations. Where will you have Christmas dinner? What’s the maximum spend on any one gift? Christmas is like working at the United Nations when it comes to keeping everyone happy. Office Parties. A great chance to see your uptight co-workers let loose – something to mock them about for the rest of the year! Returns. It may be ‘the thought that counts’, but there are an awful lot of returns and exchanges happening come January. Be sure to hang on to those receipts! Santa. No matter how old you are, it’s always a thrill to see a really authentic looking Santa Claus. Deep down, we all hope for a Miracle on 34th Street. TV. It’d be easy to do nothing but watch TV over Christmas. The soaps are the real treat though. In real life, Christmas is a joyous time, in soaps, it’s full of punch ups, explosions and murder. Wrapping Paper. There is some truly beautiful wrapping paper around and it makes for a lovely looking pile of gifts under the tree. Remember to recycle though!
L M
P Q U V X
Last Minute Shopping. No matter how prepared we think we are, there’s always that one gift that slips under the radar that we end up trawling the shops for at the eleventh hour.
““
Christmas is like working at the United Nations when it comes to keeping everyone happy.
Music. Christmas is a wonderful time of year but the music is awful. It’s the same six songs played on repeat for six weeks. If we hear ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ one more time… If you’re looking for Christmas music that has a little more edge, try the Ramsey Lewis, Beach Boys or Blind Boys of Alabama Christmas albums, Winter Winds by Mumford and Sons, Fairytale of New York by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl. And, if you prefer something a little more dramatic, there’s always Christmas Sarajevo 12/24 by Trans Siberian Orchestra. Pine Needles. There’s nothing quite like the smell of a lovely Christmas tree permeating through the house, but you’re vacuuming up pine needles until February. Quality Street. You’re already thinking of your favourites, aren’t you? We will arm wrestle anyone for one of those flat, toffee ones with the gold wrappers. Unity. Whatever feud is happening between family and friends, let’s call a ceasefire over the Yuletide season.
Visitors. You may not see people all year, but at Christmas, everyone comes around. Come January, you’ll have had so many people through your house, you’ll wish you’d have charged admission. X-rays. Is Christmas really complete without at least one trip to the hospital? We think not. Icy pavements, food poisoning, alcohol poisoning, falling over gifts – something will get you!
Yelling. If you manage to make it through the stress of the Yuletide season without letting fly at someone at least once, you deserve a Nobel Peace Prize.
Z
Zzzzz. It may well be a joyous time of year, but it’s also utterly exhausting. ‘Tis definitely the season to have extra naps!

THE PERFECT PRESENT FOR ANIMAL LOVERS! Hope Pastures was set up in 1974 to rescue abused horses and donkeys. Along with providing a lovely environment where young people can learn about caring for horses in a natural setting, the sanctuary also runs an adoption scheme. In the run up to winter, when food and bedding bills are the highest, Hope Pastures needs to increase the number of adoptions to raise much needed funds. The horses and donkeys can be adopted from just £12 a year. Supporters will help to feed and look after these animals, safe in the knowledge that none of this money is spent on admin, 100% goes towards the animals’ care.
Adoptions can be completed online at www.hopepastures.org, by dropping in to the Sanctuary on Weetwood Lane, or by calling 0113 279 1856.
For each adoption the recipient will receive an adoption certificate, a photograph of their chosen horse or donkey, a history of the animal and the chance to visit 365 days a year. This could be the ideal Christmas present for animal lovers.

SHOP TO GET FITTER TOURS AT LEEDS MARKET Leeds Market recently introduced free ‘Shop to Get Fitter’ tours. Healthy eating is important for everyone but especially people with long-term health conditions or a strong family history of heart disease, diabetes or stroke. Leeds City Council, in partnership with NHS Leeds, is introducing food tours of the market on the third Wednesday of every month to show how easy it is to shop, cook and eat healthily. Rachel Vine, Community NHS Dietitian will lead tours of up to 10 people around the market. The tours will focus on learning about the various healthy food options available and where to find them, and then move to Jamie’s Ministry of Food for discussions about food and health. “People often know what dishes they’d like to make. But getting all the ingredients together and putting it into practice every day can be a struggle”, said Rachel. “Our shopping tours can make it easier to make healthier food choices. And we hope to show you that healthy eating doesn’t have to cost more.” Recipes using information from the tours will be published on the Leeds markets website www. leedsmarkets.co.uk. To book a place call 0113 295 2858 Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5pm.
“OUR SHOPPING TOURS CAN MAKE IT EASIER TO MAKE HEALTHIER FOOD CHOICES. AND WE HOPE TO SHOW YOU THAT HEALTHY EATING DOESN’T HAVE TO COST MORE.”
LAWNSWOOD
– A GAME OF TWO HALVES
By Doug Kemp www.westparkresidents.org.uk
Lawnswood School can trace its history back to the Leeds Mechanics’ Institute with the establishment in 1845 of a dayschool for boys, the Mathematical & Commercial School, followed a few years later in 1854 by the Ladies’ Educational Institution. By 1897 the boys were based in Rossington Street occupying a new building opened by Sir James Kitson. The Leeds Boys Modern School was a department of The Leeds Institute of Science, Arts and Literature, and it was only in 1906 that the authority of the school was transferred to the education committee of Leeds City Council. Meanwhile, the girls’ fee paying school (six guineas a term in 1928) was at a ‘safe distance’ from the boys in separate premises. Possibly to avoid the attention of the boys, the school went through a series of name changes – the Leeds Girls School, then by 1909 the Leeds Girls’ Modern School, becoming Lawnswood High School in 1931. As the name suggests, this final move was to a new site shared with the boys of Leeds Modern. Both schools were officially opened in 1932 by HRH Prince George, who later became the Duke of Kent. The 1944 Education Act saw the girls’ school become ‘maintained’ and the kindergarten and junior departments were gradually phased out. Then fees were abolished and places allocated by a common entrance examination. Despite sharing a site at Lawnswood, the two schools still maintained a strict policy of segregation of the sexes, although the girls’ school website www.lawnswoodhighschool.com gives an interesting view of the various furtive ways in which the girls and boys sought to meet.

‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY INDULGENT! Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for cooks. Family and friends are welcomed in, often in great numbers, solely, it appears, to cram vast amounts of food into their rather rotund bellies! Whether it’s a few festive drinks with vol-au-vents and little rounds of smoked salmon, or the visit of rarely seen uncles and aunts for whom an anisescented ham with plenty of trimmings is in order, there is always work to be done. Festive flavours are rich, spicy and aromatic, with plenty of booze and fruit: orange and cloves; brandy and port with plums; nutmeg and allspice. Turkey, however, I find disappoints. There is something very uninspiring in the slightly bland meat, which, if not cooked very precisely can be rather dry. For this reason many enjoy lovely feathered game birds, or maybe a goose with fat so bountiful as to never let the meat dry out. And, it provides utterly superb roast potatoes! Or, how about trying the gamier pheasant or partridge? In fact, push the boat out, and roast a leg or loin of wild boar! I have called a handful of local butchers in north Leeds and all could supply these with a bit of notice. Later this week I shall be stuffing a loin of wild boar with chestnuts and mushrooms, after a long soak in some red wine (the boar, not myself!), then very slowly roasting it.
Later this week I shall be stuffing a loin of wild boar with chestnuts and mushrooms, after a long soak in some red wine (the boar, not myself!) Cooking is a wonderful way to gain an insight into other cultures and history and to find inspiration. Scandinavian Christmas food provides a welcome change from hearty British dishes – Salmon Gravad Lax is an easy to prepare, refreshing alternative to smoked salmon, and the potato and anchovy gratin dish Jansson’s Temptation is remarkably versatile if you’re looking for a way to turn yesterday’s leftovers into something new and exciting. For sweets, the only place to turn to is Italy: the light, sweet cake of Pannatone and Pandoro, the bittersweet almond Ricciarelli and Amaretti biscuits, and my mother’s favourite – the candied fruitcake Panforte. We may chastise ourselves for overindulging at this time of year, but why not? It’s a time to savour special treats and ingredients not enjoyed throughout the year. It shouldn’t be dreaded as a time of toil and hard work, but looked forward to and addressed with more celebratory flair than usual. Just spare a thought for the cook! northleedslife.co.uk | December 2010 19

It was a love of independent gift shops that prompted Lynne Denton and Rachel Mitten to open Wrapped back in 2005. Whatever the occasion, Wrapped have got it covered. Make sure you take a peek inside next time you’re in Horsforth.

GREEN TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS Christmas is bad news for the environment so how can we enjoy the festive season and keep it ‘green’? Planning is important when supermarket shopping. Buy what you need so there is no waste. Reduce food miles by choosing local and seasonal vegetables and meat. Avoid cards with glitter or metallic wrapping paper as neither can be easily recycled. Trees with a cut trunk can be recycled at many Leeds Council facilities. However, if you buy a tree with roots, it can be planted in your garden and dug up year after year. LED bulbs, for the tree lights, use less electricity than the traditional. Remember to keep the central heating thermostat at a sensible, not tropical setting! For presents, why not try one of the many ‘virtual gifts’ offered by charities? There are many environmentally friendly options from adopting a pygmy hippo to planting a mile of hedgerow – the choice is bewildering. Perhaps a subscription to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust or The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds would spark a dormant interest in nature. The junior equivalents are Wildlife Watch and Young Explorers. A selection of food and a feeder to attract the local birds (a squirrel guard is almost essential in suburban gardens) will give hours of interest and pleasure. How about making gifts? One of our favourites last year was a cardboard box, covered with Christmas paper and filled with beautifully decorated jars of home made chutneys, jams and lavender bags. This gift had so much love and care wrapped in it, we were thrilled recipients. After Christmas, remember to recycle all you can. St Chad’s Church web site (www.freespace.virgin. net/st.chads./giving/recycling ) gives details of many local charities which are happy to receive your pre-loved possessions, or unwanted gifts looking for a new home. In the New Year, resolve to live greener!

Plant catalogues have been dropping through letterboxes for a couple of months – you could spend a fortune! Make sure you have the room for new plants and that the species will survive in the North. Most bulbs have been planted by now, but tulips are best left until this month. Remember to put some wire netting under the surface to stop squirrels getting at them. There are plenty of bare rooted roses around. Don’t discount those in supermarkets, they are just as good as those found in garden centres. Prepare the ground by digging over well and adding compost. Take care to label each plant before discarding the packaging. Put them into a bucket with enough water to cover the roots and leave overnight. This helps to straighten out the roots and gives them a good drink before planting. Make sure they are firmly planted to stop any wind or frost from lifting them. Sadly, some garden centres sell roses that have just been potted
up so roots haven’t had time to settle. Beware of plants that have moss or weeds as they have been hanging around too long. As this month progresses, borders and beds can look dull. Think about planting salx and cornus to give colour through until spring. Prune them back hard so that new stems grow and colour up for the winter. Winter flowering heathers give a nice sunlit look to a dark corner but needs room to grow. Lonicera nitida ‘baggenson gold’ is a small leafed shrub that can be clipped into shape but needs a sunny position to retain its brilliant colour. Hardwood cuttings can still be taken from trees and shrubs. Select a cutting a foot in length, make a clean sloping cut at the top just above a leaf joint and a straight one at the bottom below a joint, and dip the lower part in hormone rooting powder. Dig a small trench in a shady spot with a mixture of sharp sand at the bottom and rest the labelled cutting on the base. Firm it well in and a year on they will have rooted to either pot up or plant out.
AS THIS MONTH PROGRESSES, BORDERS AND BEDS CAN LOOK DULL. THINK ABOUT PLANTING SALX AND CORNUS TO GIVE COLOUR THROUGH UNTIL SPRING.

THE START OF A BEAUTIFUL FRIENDSHIP! ....................................................................................................................................................................................................
Divino on Otley Road in Adel has been calling to me for some time – you know the way it is, you drive by and say “We must go to Divino’s”, and promptly forget until the next time you’re driving by! Well, finally, we booked a table and I think it was the start of a beautiful friendship! We had planned a family dinner and it was the perfect opportunity to try this neighbourhood ‘ristorante italiano’. Situated on the site of the former Bellini’s, Divino’s threw open their doors two years ago this month. Its aim was to bring some of the best Italian cuisine to the area and to present it in a stylish setting of striking Italian design – the furniture, lighting and fabrics were all imported especially from Italy. TALENTED CHEFS AND THE FRESHEST INGREDIENTS They boast talented chefs, the best and freshest ingredients (sourced from the best suppliers both local and continental) and friendly, knowledgeable staff – and I’d have to agree. With five people trying to make up their minds over an extensive menu, this was going to take some time. A bowl of olives appeared and some interesting bread to help fuel the decision making. Our rather loquacious table finally fell silent as the starters arrived – spare ribs that fell off
the bone in a rich sauce; Frutti di Mare (£6.95) marinated seafood on a bed of celery, sweet peppers and red onions; Salmon Tartar – a lovely refreshing dish of chopped raw salmon infused with dill and lemon on a bed of salad; Caprino (£6.25) – grilled goat’s cheese, drizzled with honey with sweet pepper salad; and Mozzarella in Carroza (£6.25), deep fried Mozzarella and ham, encased in bread and served with a rich tomato sauce. The silence was followed by a flurry of activity as everyone demanded a taste of everyone else’s! ....................................................
WE HAD PLANNED A FAMILY DINNER AND IT WAS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO TRY THIS NEIGHBOURHOOD ‘RISTORANTE ITALIANO
.................................................... MMMMM MMMMM! Now, we were really looking forward to the main course. Two of us opted for pasta – a nice spicy Arrabbiata (£7.95) and rich Spaghetti Bolognese (£7.75). On the recommendation of our waiter I tried the beautifully fresh Halibut from the Specials menu, topped with vine cherry tomatoes in a delicate sauce with a touch of saffron, with a rocket and parmesan salad as a side dish – fabulous! The Anatra al Pepe (£13.95), breast of duck with shallots, peppercorns and cream brandy sauce got equal
rave review and the Agnello Alle Erbe (£15.95), boneless breast of lamb with a herby breadcrumb crust on a bed of Savoy cabbage with a marsala sauce was superbly juicy and succulent with just the right amount of pinkness. LIGHT, REFRESHING AND OH SO GOOD! I know, it was greedy to actually think of dessert – but everything had been so good so far, we just had to try. You know how cheesecake can be fairly heavy? Not here. The blueberry and raspberry cheesecake was moussey, light and refreshing, the Crème Brulée – great, the Lemon Tarte and Apple and Ginger Crumble were both encased in a wonderfully short pastry, light and crumbly – the perfect way to round off such a meal. NOW THEY WANT TO TAKE ME TO ITALY FOR CHRISTMAS! Well why not? It may be Italy in Adel but a little bit of Buon Natale can never go amiss when it comes to celebrating Christmas. Divino’s are offering a three course Christmas Lunch (from mid November) for just £14.95; three course Christmas Dinner (also from mid November) from £22.95; and a special New Year’s Eve Dinner with three courses for just £29.95, including a glass of bubbly!
EATING EARLY IS GOOD Divino’s also has an excellent Early Bird Menu – two courses for just £10.95 and three for £13.95, available seven days a week 12 – 2.30pm and 5.30 – 7pm (except Saturday). And, there’s a great Children’s Menu too! .................................................... Divino, 473 Otley Road, Adel, LS16 7NR. Tel: 0113 230 0600 www.divinorestaurant.co.uk

Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon
Woodpeckers climb and excavate nest holes in trees. Their drumming action on dead wood in spring is a sure sign of their presence on territory. Flight is in deep undulations. Of the three all-year residents, the most familiar is the great spotted woodpecker in woods, parks and gardens and now a regular visitor to bird tables. It is a black and white bird with large oval shoulder patches and red under the tail. Males only have a red hind crown. Bright green with crimson crowns, green woodpeckers are larger and more rural, preferring open areas near trees which resound with their loud laughing calls. Lesser spotted woodpeckers, only chaffinch size, are black above with white bars across wings and back, the male sporting a red crown. Shy and elusive, they inhabit deciduous woods, parkland and river valleys with alders. The first two are increasing widely but the lesser spotted is now very scarce, though easily overlooked.

I’m pretty strict when it comes to celebrations. Birthdays? Fine. Anniversaries? Only significant ones. Work leaving parties? – well how long did they work there? If it was only a few months they can really stroll off into the sunset without me chipping in for a gift. I don’t partake in dancing around Stonehenge for the summer solstice, I hate Halloween and don’t even talk to me about Bonfire night. But Christmas….ahh, I LOVE Christmas. I love Christmas lights and shopping when it’s a bit nippy out. I say I don’t mind it being a bit nippy – having spent the last three years living in Canada, nippiness is much preferred to the minus 35, snow up to your knees, fear of frostbite kind of cold that goes with Christmas there. I love how the season makes everyone a little happier. It even manages to melt my ice queen heart. I love sending Christmas cards, making eggnog and hiding presents before the big day. And, I feel at ease with you now so I trust you enough to tell you this: I may very well be 29, but I am still the first one up on Christmas morning, waking everyone up to open gifts. I love all of that, I really do. The only thing I can’t stand about Christmas is the music. Can we all just make a pact to put the Mariah Carey Christmas album and that God awful song by Slade in an incinerator? .............................................................................................

THEY LIVED IN HEADINGLEY
Geoffrey Wooler (1911-2010)
......................................................................................................
Pioneering Heart Surgeon
......................................................................................................
There can’t be many distinguished surgeons who would choose to open a restaurant on their retirement, but this is what Geoffrey Wooler did, here in Headingley – a mark of his bold and adventurous spirit. This spirit had been evident throughout his life. He was born in 1911 into a well-to-do Leeds family, who had made their money from a successful business in sanitary engineering. By the time he was born, his mother had lost her sight through an infection, but it was a close, happy family. He remembered with affection his nursemaid, who taught him to knit and crochet – skills which he never lost and later declared were invaluable in his surgical career! At eighteen, uncertain what direction to take, he followed his brother to Cambridge to study law, but he found it dull stuff and he switched to medicine, which fascinated him. After graduating, he started on his clinical work in a London hospital. His future looked mapped out for him. But in 1939, when he was only 28, the expected pattern of his life was shattered, as it was for so many young men, by the outbreak of war. He was called up and drafted into the Royal Army Medical Corps as a surgeon. He worked on the battlefront, first in North Africa and then in the front line of the invasions of Sicily and mainland Italy, notably at Monte Cassino. He had to operate in the most primitive of field hospitals, in desperate conditions, in the thick of the battle. During a period of three years he operated on some 3,000 men wounded in the fighting, some of them with terrible injuries. By the time he was demobilised in 1946 he had been promoted to Lt.Col. and had been ‘mentioned in despatches’. He returned to Leeds in 1947 to take up the post of consultant in cardio-thoracic surgery at the Infirmary. This was a time when the first heart-lung
machines were being developed in this country and he managed to secure one of the prototypes for the Infirmary. He and his team of surgeons experimented with the new machine until they felt confident enough to operate on their first patient. He continued to develop new techniques and in 1957 led one of the world’s greatest surgical advances when he and his team performed a successful open-heart operation. His pioneering work attracted international recognition, and inspired others to follow him into this vital life-saving field of cardiac surgery. On a personal level his warmth, humour and generosity of spirit won him many friends all over the world. Some of his fellow surgeons formed a society in his honour, and in 1989 put up a plaque commemorating his work at the entrance to the Leeds Infirmary. He kept in touch with his many overseas friends and colleagues and travelled widely. He had particularly close links with Italy and Yugoslavia, and bought houses in both countries – the ancient house he owned and restored in the island of Korcula was specially dear to him. When he retired from the Infirmary in 1974, he looked round for a fresh challenge. He decided to open a restaurant in a property he owned in Shaw Lane, Headingley – against everyone’s advice. This bold venture was not a success – he wrote about it later under the heading ‘how not to run a restaurant’! – and a year later he gave it up. He continued to travel and enjoy the company of family and friends, spending his later years at his home in the Dales and at Shaw Grange, Headingley. In 1999, aged 88, he published his memoirs, ‘Pig in a Suitcase’, full of memories of his war experiences and other anecdotes of his varied and adventurous life. He died earlier this year. northleedslife.co.uk | December 2010 27

DECK THE HALLS! Soon the tree buying frenzy will break out! We have already heard of people who have had to be restrained to stop them putting up trees in November – but the real crazy time is almost upon us. What is the name of the director of A Christmas Carol at The West Yorkshire Playhouse? Send your answer to:
Shape-shifters, spirits and ghostly apparitions will haunt the West Yorkshire Playhouse stage this Christmas in Charles Dickens’ classic seasonal tale A Christmas Carol. This timeless story has been adapted by award-winning playwright Bryony Lavery and seasoned composer Jason Carr into a spectacular new musical. Following its critically acclaimed staging at Birmingham Repertory Theatre last year, A Christmas Carol is brought to the Playhouse by director Nikolai Foster and designer Colin Richmond and is sure to keep the whole family on the edge of their seats as strange apparitions and spooky spectres reveal the true meaning of Christmas.
Paula Rabbitt, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Quarry Hill, Playhouse Square, Leeds, LS2 7UP. The deadline for entries is Monday 20th December. All correct answers will be entered into a random draw. The decision of The West Yorkshire Playhouse is final and no correspondence will be entered into. No cash alternative is available.
A new cast is headed by Philip Whitchurch, who played Billy’s father in Broadway and West End productions of Billy Elliot. He also played Chief Inspector Philip Cato in The Bill and kooky neighbour Tyler in six series of BBC One sitcom My Hero. Mrs Fezziwig is played by accomplished actress and singer Beverly Klein, and Robert Finlayson and Sarah Moyle fill the roles of Bob and Mrs Cratchitt. This spectacular musical is at The Playhouse until Saturday 15th January. Tickets can be reserved by calling the Box Office on 0113 213 7700 or visiting www.wyp.org.uk

ONE OF MOZART’S GREATEST CHORAL WORKS Mozart’s Great Mass, containing some spectacular double choruses which require great virtuosity on the part of the singers, is part of a major Mozart concert at Leeds Town Hall, 7.30pm on Saturday 29th January.
Great Mass are less clear. As the Mass had not been commissioned, perhaps he decided to concentrate on other money making projects. Several lesser composers have tried to ‘complete’ it, with varying degrees of success.

TIMES PAST AND CHRISTMAS PRESENT! Leeds Civic Trust often figures in the local press when city developments are being discussed, which is hardly surprising since amongst its major aims are the encouragement of high standards of design, architecture and town planning. But did you know that it also exists to stimulate public interest in and care for the beauty, history and character of the city and locality?
We organise visits to major new buildings throughout the year, every February we put on a series of lunchtime talks on the history of Leeds, and in the summer there is a programme of guided walks exploring the history of the city, followed by a buffet supper. But there is more! The Leeds Civic Trust bookshop is the best place to look for books on the history of Leeds – books of pictures, old maps, the history of particular buildings, the history of Leeds transport, and books on almost every district of the city. Most are surprisingly inexpensive, with many costing less than £5. All have that special local appeal and would make excellent Christmas presents. Our bookshop, in Wharf Street, just off The Calls, is open 10am – 1pm Monday to Friday. You can also buy gift tokens for books or for membership. And you could even sign up as a member yourself! LEEDS PHIL TO PERFORM FULL MESSIAH Leeds Philharmonic Chorus will perform Handel’s Messiah in its entirety at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 11th December. The Chorus is looking forward to the challenge of singing it in full, as it is more usual to sing this work with several movements omitted. The Phil will be accompanied by the highly-regarded Manchester Camerata, one of the UK’s leading chamber orchestras, conducted by Mark Hindley. Mark took over as Chorus Master in 2008 and, together with Music Director David Hill, has been helping the Phil go from strength to strength. The soloists are four exciting, award-winning young singers: soprano Sarah Power, alto Julianne Young, tenor James Greer, and bass Philip Smith. The organist is Christopher Johns. Tickets £15-£30 from Box Office 0113 224 3801 or www.leedsphil.org.

A festive treat for all the family, it features three Kings, three Shepherds and the three Spirits who teach Scrooge that Christmas isn’t the humbug he takes it for. A comic tale from the Wakefield mystery plays, Mak the Sheepstealer flows into the touching storyline of Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors to form a perfect companion piece to Dickens’ timeless Christmas Carol. And as if that weren’t enough, they’re adding an old mummers’ play this year, in which St. George fights a dragon and meets - you guessed it - Father Christmas. Theatre of the Dales’ open-air Shakespeare next summer will be Much Ado About Nothing, directed by David Robertson and set in the post-war forties. Venues so far include Sledmere House (July 24), Knaresborough Castle (July 27) and Kirkstall Abbey (July 28/29/30). For more, visit www.theatreofthedales.co.uk or call David on 0113 274 0461.

EDINBURGH FRINGE AWARD FOR HEADINGLEY’S TRIO LITERATI
E LOOKIN G FOR SOMEWHER TO HID E CHRISTMAS PRESE NTS THIS YEAR?
Trio Literati’s Edinburgh Fringe show Five in a Bar has just been awarded Sell-out status by the Festival. Every year the Fringe Festival hosts over 2000 shows per day throughout the month of August, so to get any audience at all is already an achievement, given the competition. “We are delighted”, said Jane Oakshott, Trio Lit’s founder and director, “the average Fringe audience is just six, so to achieve Sell-Out status is amazing!” Having achieved the much coveted Sell-Out Status award from the Fringe, Five in a Bar is now entitled to use the Fringe laurel wreath in all its future publicity. For Five in a Bar Trio Lit join forces with magical be-bop inspired singer Louise Gibbs, and international jazz pianist Jonathan Gee. Through the dislocated characters in a late-night downtown bar the show features poems and jazz from the Beat era, in a recreation of ‘jazzetry’ -- a combination of words and music made fashionable in the ‘50s by Beat poets such as Ginsberg, Kerouac and Ferlinghetti. ‘Jazzetry’ was described by Kerouac as “a return to the origins of joy in poetry”.

Five in a Bar had a very up-beat send-off from Headingley when the Fringe preview at Richmond House School was greeted with enthusiastic applause and very positive feedback. After Edinburgh, Five in a Bar played at the Hexham Abbey Festival -- the move from typical jazz cellar venue (Edinburgh’s The Jazz Bar) to lofty Hexham Abbey was quite an experience! Trio Literati’s next appearance locally will be as part of the HEART launch celebrations.

The Jim Jones Revue – Burning Your House Down
...........................
The latest release from this London based outfit hits the ground running and the breakneck pace doesn’t let up. The Jim Jones sound draws heavily on 50’s Rock ‘n’ Roll and the garage rock proto-punk of The Sonics, MC5 and The Stooges, by way of psychobilly groups like The Cramps. Opener Dishonest John sets the stall out early, its clattery intro giving way to a cavalcade of propulsive drums, frantic piano pounding, heavy riffing distorted guitars and the throat ripping, strangulated vocal of a man possessed. It pretty much chugs on in this vein for the rest of the album. It’s relentlessly high octane and the band hammer it out like they damn well mean it, playing with verve, rhythmic precision and, particularly on piano, keen dexterity. What the record may lack in textural variety it makes up for with consistency and a singularity of purpose; it rocks really hard and it’s very loud. Simply put, these boys aren’t messing around. I’ve heard that The Jim Jones Review magic really comes alive on stage and I can well believe their live shows are a riot. However, while Burning Your House Down is a well produced, impressively performed set of songs guaranteed to get the blood pumping, it benefits somewhat from its brevity. Were it to exceed its thirty three minutes by much it would risk outstaying it’s welcome. By Brendan Campbell northleedslife.co.uk | December 2010 37

Support for some of the most complex Racing Wheel/Pedal peripherals yet made also hints at GT5’s serious racing pedigree and could be an ideal gift for dad or older brother!

RALPH THORESBY RECEIVES FABULOUS NEW PIANO FROM CASIO MUSIC Following a successful project with Casio Music and Myleene Klass to celebrate Casio Music’s 30th birthday, the EMI Music Sound Foundation was given the opportunity to supply the latest Casio Celviano AP-420 piano to each of the specialist schools supported by the foundation. Ralph Thoresby School could not have been granted specialist status in the arts without the support of the Foundation. The London- based foundation is dedicated to supporting music development across the country and has already awarded £3,500,000 to more than 2,300 individuals, schools and music teachers for music education and the purchase of musical instruments. The Celviano is recommended as the ideal training instrument for piano students. “I am absolutely delighted with this gift”, said Brian Wilson, Director of Arts at Ralph Thoresby. “It has arrived at a most opportune moment with numbers of students in music increasing and the popularity of learning piano rising. This new model will take centre stage at our forthcoming Christmas Talent Show.”

FORMER PM OF HAITI VISITS CARDINAL HEENAN Michèle Duvivier Pierre-Louis, Prime Minister of Haiti from September 2008 to November 2009, visited Cardinal Heenan recently and spoke about the re-building of her country following the devastating earthquake in January, which killed more than 200,000 people. An estimated 1.5 million people are still homeless. The former premier was visiting the UK to highlight the work of ‘Progressio’, a charity that helps people in developing countries overcome poverty. Since leaving office, Mme Pierre-Louis has worked on the world stage to advocate the rebuilding of Haiti. She holds a visiting Professorship at Harvard University and is executive director of the Knowledge and Freedom Foundation (FOKAL), an educational organisation. “Our pupils really appreciated the opportunity to meet a world leader and learn about the challenges facing Haiti”, said Head Teacher, Liz Cox. “Madame Pierre-Louis was in the UK for only two days, during which time she addressed a conference on development in London and met national leaders. We are very grateful that she took time out of a busy schedule to meet our pupils.”

AKKIES CLAIM TOURNOIS DE NANTES Leeds Akkies were recently invited to represent the Rugby League Conference at Stade Michel Lecointre and beat the Nantes Bretagne Vikings 2416 to claim the prestigious Tournois de Nantes. Veteran prop Rich ‘Wilf’ Wilkinson scored the match-clinching try in his farewell appearance, ending an open age playing career that began in the 1980s. In the women’s event, Akkies ladies missed out on further glory as French national champions Pugol claimed the honours in a hotly contested four-team tournament. The event was a typically flamboyant affair, with a lone piper leading the teams onto the pitch, rock music greeting every try and a lavish post-match reception in the pitchside marquee. “It was a fantastic trip that will live in the memory of all our players for a long time,” commented tour manager Lotti Sills. “We couldn’t have wished for more hospitable hosts and we look forward to welcoming them to Leeds in June for the return fixtures.” Below: Keith Sandu and Mike Wells celebrate with the Coupe de Nantes.

RUNNING FOR A CAUSE In November 2009, Rachel Holford returned from holiday to discover her mother Jennie, had been diagnosed with a rare type of lymphoma. Leukaemia Care was a great help throughout her treatment. Unfortunately the treatment didn’t lead to the results they hoped for and Jennie continues to have regular check ups and scans. Inspired by Jennie’s strength and positive outlook throughout her treatment, Rachel and her partner Laura Leahy, decided to raise money for Leukaemia Care. In September this year they ran the Berlin Marathon and raised £3,675. As part of their grueling training plan they spent hours running around Leeds between February and September. Rachel’s mother and the generosity of their friends was a constant motivation as they ran. Determined to continue fundraising, Rachel and Laura have now signed up for the London Marathon in April 2011. If you’d like to sponsor them and help them raise even more for Leukaemia Care, go to www.virginmoneygiving.com/rachlaur Keep an eye out for them pounding the streets of Leeds over the next few months, proudly decked out in their Leukaemia Care tops!

PHYSIOTHERAPY: THE SCIENCE-BASED HEALTHCARE PROFESSION
...................................................................................................................................................................................................
Physiotherapy is a sciencebased healthcare profession which uses a physical approach to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social wellbeing after an accident, surgery or pain from overuse activity. Leeds Sports Injury and Physiotherapy Clinic has been established for 25 years and has worked with amateur, professional
and international sports teams, dance and theatre groups. The core of our business has always been in treating the general complaints that we all suffer from, eg: sprains, strains, upper and lower limb problems. Recently we’ve seen many more cases of neck and back problems caused by increased use of computers, poor posture and our more sedentary lifestyles. We also help many expectant mothers cope with the problems caused by the extra weight carried during pregnancy. Treatment can be hands-on, electrotherapy and exercise programmes tailored to each patient. Not only do we aim to eradicate the immediate
