This year, Otley Victorian Fayre celebrates its silver jubilee in style by being held on a Sunday for the first time. On Sunday 12th December between 2 – 8pm, the town centre will be closed to traffic to accommodate craft stalls of gifts, homemade produce, roast chestnuts, mulled wine, mince pies, fairground rides and entertainment. Many stallholders and visitors will be in Victorian dress giving the event a really authentic feel. Adding to the Christmas atmosphere is the windowdressing competition and this year’s theme is ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’. Children and adults can gather clues from the shop displays and take part in a treasure hunt anagram competition (entry forms in the programme, on sale in various shops, cafes and pubs). And, Otley’s schoolchildren, also in Victorian costume, will be giving heart-warming renditions of popular Christmas songs and carols around the town. “By holding it on a Sunday, we hope to beat last year’s record attendance, a staggering 10,000 people”, said Sara Quin, one of the organisers. “There will be carols, music and food, and it’s a great place to buy your Christmas gifts.” For further information visit www.victorianfayre.co.uk

THE TOWN CENTRE WILL BE CLOSED TO TRAFFIC TO ACCOMMODATE CRAFT STALLS OF GIFTS, HOMEMADE PRODUCE, ROAST CHESTNUTS, MULLED WINE, MINCE PIES, FAIRGROUND RIDES AND ENTERTAINMENT. Free Car Parking Near Lunds of Otley on Westgate, at the point of the road closure. Chevin Coach Park, opposite the cattle market on East Chevin Road will be used by the usual car boot sale until 3pm. Then it will be free car parking for the Victorian Fayre.

FIRE STATION COMMANDER THANKS LOCAL PRINTER

MULHOLLAND CELEBRATES BRITISH PUB WEEK AT THE HALF MOON Greg Mulholland MP, Chairman of the parliamentary Save the Pub Group, celebrated British Pub Week with a visit to The Half Moon Inn in Pool-in-Wharfedale. A well known advocate of the Great British Pub, Greg visited the Half Moon with Martin Kellet of Wharfebank Breweries, which supplies the pub. “I always enjoy visiting pubs in my constituency and given that it was the first ever British Pub Week I could not pass up the opportunity to pop in”, said Greg. “A local pub, selling locally brewed beer is something that should be celebrated, not just during British Pub Week but all year round.” Caption: Greg pictured with (left to right) Tony Jenkins, Vice Chair of Leeds CAMRA, Jim Irvine, landlord of the Half Moon, and Martin Kellaway or Wharfebank Breweries.

Otley Fire Station’s Commander, Nigel Atkins, was delighted to present Andrew Howard, Chairman of Sinclair Printers, with a certificate in recognition of their contribution to Otley’s retained and ‘on-call’ fire service. The National Employer Recognition Scheme was launched in March this year by the then Fire Minister, Shahid Malik. Where it is not economically viable to staff fire stations on a full time basis, the willingness of local companies to allow staff (who have been fully trained by the Fire Service) to be on-call and available to attend fire emergencies during the working day is invaluable. At Sinclairs, Warren Utley constantly carries around an alerter and is ready to leave work and respond to an emergency at any time. It is this availability that allows Otley to be covered by a retained service. Station Commander Nigel Atkins said: “I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my sincere thanks, along with that of the Authority of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, to Andrew and his staff at Sinclairs, for allowing Warren to undertake this vital function to the community of Otley.”

CONCERT IN AID OF ‘HELP OUR HEROES’ AND BEN SMITHSON Otley Town Councillor, Nigel Francis, is staging a Christmas Concert at the Kings Hall, Ilkley, 7.30pm on Saturday 4th December. The concert will be the climax of a year’s fundraising and the money raised will be split between the Yorkshire Volunteers Band and the ‘Help Our Heroes’ charity. Nigel is also planning a collection for Ben Smithson, a local boy who has Cerebral Palsy and is trying to raise over £45,000 to go to America for treatment. “I pledged that he would go to America and I have always tried my hardest to make sure that young people’s dreams do come true”, said Nigel. “The Otley Vintage Transport Extravaganza this year was a great success and with other fundraising I hope the final cheque will take the Ben Smithson Appeal to over £45,000.” Tickets (£10/£8) are available from Ilkley Tourist Information Office on 01943 602319 or Councillor Nigel Francis on 01943 463467.

DOG FOULING ON OTLEY’S STREETS ISN’T GETTING ANY BETTER Otley’s Muck:up! Campaign team and supporters recently completed a walk to assess the severity of dog fouling on Otley’s streets and open spaces. The walkabout coincides with the distribution of three fantastic posters, which were part of the poster competition run earlier this year. Those present were Sara Quin (founder of Muck:up!), Muck:up! team members, Greg Mulholland MP, PCSO Andrews of West Yorkshire Police, members of Otley Town Council, Stacey Campbell (Head of Leeds City Council Dog Warden Team), concerned dog owners and local children. “I knew the dog fouling situation in Otley was bad but I had no idea it was so bad”, said Sara Quin. “We walked for nearly three hours and every single street we went on had incidents of dog fouling. We need to re-educate all dog-owners and get the message through that it is completely unacceptable for dog owners not to pick up after their dogs.” Anyone wanting a poster to display on their property please contact info@muckup.org.uk You can also register your support at the muck:up! TRADITIONAL DANCE IN ADDINGHAM Addingham Memorial Hall is the centre for a range of community activities, including Addingham Ceilidh Club, which meets once a month to dance and enjoy traditional dances from Yorkshire and all over Britain, as well as Europe and America. On the third Sunday of the month enthusiastic dancers get together to dance to music provided by resident band Beneath the Clock. This highly experienced four piece band adds life and excitement to the evening. The dances are called by similarly experienced callers. You don’t need a partner to join in the fun. It’s a chance to meet plenty of friendly people who have no hang-ups about asking complete strangers for a dance. In addition to the regular monthly two hour sessions (7.30-9.30pm), the club organises the New Year’s Day Ceilidh, which has become an established Yorkshire tradition attracting folk from far and wide. This year Phoenix Ceilidh Band is the booked group. Exciting floor spots, including piping in 2011, enliven the night and although there are only soft drinks on sale you are welcome to take your own alcohol. For more information call Liz Bowen 01943 609393 or Jennie Ellison 01535 664634.

OTLEY SCOUTS AND GUIDES PREPARE FOR BIGGER AND BETTER CHRISTMAS POST SERVICE For the twenty third year in a row, the Otley Parish Church Scouts and Guides Parents’ Association is running its Christmas Card delivery service for Otley. Last year they delivered 10,000 cards and they are hoping to exceed that number this year. Income from this service helps to cover the running costs of the Scouts HQ on Burras Lane for a year. Stamps are on sale now and cost just 20p per card. Collection and deliveries start from Saturday 27th November and run until noon Saturday 18th December. The service is for the town of Otley only – no cards for Clifton, Askwith, Pool, Menston etc please. Also, please don’t post cards with Scout/ Guide stamps in GPO post boxes! More shops and local businesses than ever are supporting the service this year. These include:

A Message from Peter Finlay Chairman, Menston Parish Council Menston Parish Council is currently finalising the display of Christmas lights at Kirklands. In addition to the lighting displays in the trees, the buildings will also be lit up. We are unlikely to rival Blackpool, but I’m sure you will agree, it’s a great display! 2010 has been a busy year for Menston, a large part of it being taken up with a major planning application for land adjacent to Derry Hill. The strength of feeling about this application prompted the formation of Menston Action Group, whose hard work and commitment has inspired more than 1,000 Menston residents to write and object. The Group made a special journey into Bradford to deliver these letters to Bradford Council’s Planning Department. Menston Community Association and the Parish Council also galvanised their forces to scrutinise the application and produced a report identifying the many grounds for objection. I am sure that I speak for everyone when I say that we wait for the next move with bated breath.

This year also saw the delivery of the Parish Council’s Speed Indicator Device (SID) in response to a large number of complaints about speeding traffic, particularly on Bingley Road. Our local Police Community Support Officer has deployed it on several occasions. He is more than happy for local volunteers to accompany him – so if you would like to help, please contact a member of the Parish Council. Our new notice board outside the library lists our contact details. After my last Christmas message, ‘Use it, or Lose it’, I am particularly pleased to see the opening of two new shops in Menston; and the re-opening of the village bakery and would like to encourage everyone to support them. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

THE NORTH LEEDS LIFE FEATURE

A- Z THE

OF

Christmas

A C D F

B

Alcohol. Copious amounts are consumed throughout the season. People start stocking up in early December as if prohibition were making a comeback. Coca Cola Advert. We all know Christmas doesn’t really start until that Coca Cola ad comes on TV.

E

Dolling Up. Get out those glad rags! There are parties to go to. Dry clean that tux, dust off that ball gown, make a hair appointment and have a facial!

G

Family. Petty arguments spring up, the kids are on a sugar-induced hyperactive rampage, Granny is grumpy in the corner, but we all come together to feast and be merry.

H I

He’s Behind You! What would Christmas be without a cheesy pantomime?

It’s a Wonderful Life. Popcorn, blankets, cosy fire and a Christmas classic.

J K

Baubles. Who knew there were so many varieties? It’s a nightmare! You could just spray paint a couple of golf balls and leave it at that, but every year you are enticed to buy more. Making your own can be fun. Over the years we have collected beautiful decorations – some made by friends and relations, some by children at primary school, some purchased at art or craft fairs. Each one tells a story which is conjured up each time you hang it on a tree. Embarrassing Moments. With all that food, drink, tinsel and the possibility of a karaoke machine, Yuletide is a minefield of embarrassing moments waiting to happen.

Gifts. We spend a great deal of time stressing about what gift to get for whom. Hopefully, you’ve kept your November issues of North Leeds Life and are making use of our Gift Guide!

Jingle Bells. You may not hear bells the rest of the year, but soon as December rolls around, there’s a bell ringing version of every song ever created.

Kids. Of course the season is all about the kids, with their list of demands and attempts to convince us they haven’t been naughty all year (we’ll just brush that month of detentions aside). But at midnight on Christmas Eve, like magic, we’re all kids once more (clearly, we’ve watched that Coca Cola advert one too many times).

N O R

S

T W

Y

Negotiations. Where will you have Christmas dinner? What’s the maximum spend on any one gift? Christmas is like working at the United Nations when it comes to keeping everyone happy. Office Parties. A great chance to see your uptight co-workers let loose – something to mock them about for the rest of the year! Returns. It may be ‘the thought that counts’, but there are an awful lot of returns and exchanges happening come January. Be sure to hang on to those receipts! Santa. No matter how old you are, it’s always a thrill to see a really authentic looking Santa Claus. Deep down, we all hope for a Miracle on 34th Street. TV. It’d be easy to do nothing but watch TV over Christmas. The soaps are the real treat though. In real life, Christmas is a joyous time, in soaps, it’s full of punch ups, explosions and murder. Wrapping Paper. There is some truly beautiful wrapping paper around and it makes for a lovely looking pile of gifts under the tree. Remember to recycle though!

L M

P Q U V X

Last Minute Shopping. No matter how prepared we think we are, there’s always that one gift that slips under the radar that we end up trawling the shops for at the eleventh hour.

““

Christmas is like working at the United Nations when it comes to keeping everyone happy.

Music. Christmas is a wonderful time of year but the music is awful. It’s the same six songs played on repeat for six weeks. If we hear ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ one more time… If you’re looking for Christmas music that has a little more edge, try the Ramsey Lewis, Beach Boys or Blind Boys of Alabama Christmas albums, Winter Winds by Mumford and Sons, Fairytale of New York by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl. And, if you prefer something a little more dramatic, there’s always Christmas Sarajevo 12/24 by Trans Siberian Orchestra. Pine Needles. There’s nothing quite like the smell of a lovely Christmas tree permeating through the house, but you’re vacuuming up pine needles until February. Quality Street. You’re already thinking of your favourites, aren’t you? We will arm wrestle anyone for one of those flat, toffee ones with the gold wrappers. Unity. Whatever feud is happening between family and friends, let’s call a ceasefire over the Yuletide season.

Visitors. You may not see people all year, but at Christmas, everyone comes around. Come January, you’ll have had so many people through your house, you’ll wish you’d have charged admission. X-rays. Is Christmas really complete without at least one trip to the hospital? We think not. Icy pavements, food poisoning, alcohol poisoning, falling over gifts – something will get you!

Yelling. If you manage to make it through the stress of the Yuletide season without letting fly at someone at least once, you deserve a Nobel Peace Prize.

Z

Zzzzz. It may well be a joyous time of year, but it’s also utterly exhausting. ‘Tis definitely the season to have extra naps!

JACOB’S

at

www.northleedslife.co.uk By Jacob Rosen

‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY INDULGENT! Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for cooks. Family and friends are welcomed in, often in great numbers, solely, it appears, to cram vast amounts of food into their rather rotund bellies! Whether it’s a few festive drinks with vol-au-vents and little rounds of smoked salmon, or the visit of rarely seen uncles and aunts for whom an anisescented ham with plenty of trimmings is in order, there is always work to be done. Festive flavours are rich, spicy and aromatic, with plenty of booze and fruit: orange and cloves; brandy and port with plums; nutmeg and allspice. Turkey, however, I find disappoints. There is something very uninspiring in the slightly bland meat, which, if not cooked very precisely can be rather dry. For this reason many enjoy lovely feathered game birds, or maybe a goose with fat so bountiful as to never let the meat dry out. And, it provides utterly superb roast potatoes! Or, how about trying the gamier pheasant or partridge? In fact, push the boat out, and roast a leg or loin of wild boar! I have called a handful of local butchers in north Leeds and all could supply these with a bit of notice. Later this week I shall be stuffing a loin of wild boar with chestnuts and mushrooms, after a long soak in some red wine (the boar, not myself!), then very slowly roasting it. 14 December 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk

Later this week I shall be stuffing a loin of wild boar with chestnuts and mushrooms, after a long soak in some red wine (the boar, not myself!) Cooking is a wonderful way to gain an insight into other cultures and history and to find inspiration. Scandinavian Christmas food provides a welcome change from hearty British dishes – Salmon Gravad Lax is an easy to prepare, refreshing alternative to smoked salmon, and the potato and anchovy gratin dish Jansson’s Temptation is remarkably versatile if you’re looking for a way to turn yesterday’s leftovers into something new and exciting. For sweets, the only place to turn to is Italy: the light, sweet cake of Pannatone and Pandoro, the bittersweet almond Ricciarelli and Amaretti biscuits, and my mother’s favourite – the candied fruitcake Panforte. We may chastise ourselves for overindulging at this time of year, but why not? It’s a time to savour special treats and ingredients not enjoyed throughout the year. It shouldn’t be dreaded as a time of toil and hard work, but looked forward to and addressed with more celebratory flair than usual. Just spare a thought for the cook!

THE PERFECT PRESENT FOR ANIMAL LOVERS! Hope Pastures was set up in 1974 to rescue abused horses and donkeys. Along with providing a lovely environment where young people can learn about caring for horses in a natural setting, the sanctuary also runs an adoption scheme. In the run up to winter, when food and bedding bills are the highest, Hope Pastures needs to increase the number of adoptions to raise much needed funds. The horses and donkeys can be adopted from just £12 a year. Supporters will help to feed and look after these animals, safe in the knowledge that none of this money is spent on admin, 100% goes towards the animals’ care.

Adoptions can be completed online at www.hopepastures.org, by dropping in to the Sanctuary on Weetwood Lane, or by calling 0113 279 1856.

For each adoption the recipient will receive an adoption certificate, a photograph of their chosen horse or donkey, a history of the animal and the chance to visit 365 days a year. This could be the ideal Christmas present for animal lovers.

It was a love of independent gift shops that prompted Lynne Denton and Rachel Mitten to open Wrapped back in 2005. With no retail experience (except for Lynne’s Saturday job at Woolworths back in the late 70s!), they took the plunge and their small but perfectly formed shop has been selling beautiful, unusual and quirky gifts ever since. Whatever the occasion, Wrapped have got it covered. Make sure you take a peek inside next time you’re in Horsforth.

GREEN TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS

Christmas

Blinds Sale everything’s up to HALF PRICE

Christmas is bad news for the environment so how can we enjoy the festive season and keep it ‘green’? Planning is important when supermarket shopping. Buy what you need so there is no waste. Reduce food miles by choosing local and seasonal vegetables and meat. Avoid cards with glitter or metallic wrapping paper as neither can be easily recycled. Trees with a cut trunk can be recycled at many Leeds Council facilities. However, if you buy a tree with roots, it can be planted in your garden and dug up year after year. LED bulbs, for the tree lights, use less electricity than the traditional. Remember to keep the central heating thermostat at a sensible, not tropical setting!

For presents, why not try one of the many ‘virtual gifts’ offered by charities? There are many environmentally friendly options from adopting a pygmy hippo to planting a mile of hedgerow – the choice is bewildering. Perhaps a subscription to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust or The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds would spark a dormant interest in nature. The junior equivalents are Wildlife Watch and Young Explorers. A selection of food and a feeder to attract the local birds (a squirrel guard is almost essential in suburban gardens) will give hours of interest and pleasure. How about making gifts? One of our favourites last year was a cardboard box, covered with Christmas paper and filled with beautifully decorated jars of home made chutneys, jams and lavender bags. This gift had so much love and care wrapped in it, we were thrilled recipients.

Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon Woodpeckers climb and excavate nest holes in trees. Their drumming action on dead wood in spring is a sure sign of their presence on territory. Flight is in deep undulations. Of the three all-year residents, the most familiar is the great spotted woodpecker in woods, parks and gardens and now a regular visitor to bird tables. It is a black and white bird with large oval shoulder patches and red under the tail. Males only have a red hind crown. Bright green with crimson crowns, green woodpeckers are larger and more rural, preferring open areas near trees which resound with their loud laughing calls. Lesser spotted woodpeckers, only chaffinch size, are black above with white bars across wings and back, the male sporting a red crown. Shy and elusive, they inhabit deciduous woods, parkland and river valleys with alders. The first two are increasing widely but the lesser spotted is now very scarce, though easily overlooked.

BANGS & A BUN

.............................................................................................

I’m pretty strict when it comes to celebrations. Birthdays? Fine. Anniversaries? Only significant ones. Work leaving parties? – well how long did they work there? If it was only a few months they can really stroll off into the sunset without me chipping in for a gift. I don’t partake in dancing around Stonehenge for the summer solstice, I hate Halloween and don’t even talk to me about Bonfire night. But Christmas….ahh, I LOVE Christmas. I love Christmas lights and shopping when it’s a bit nippy out. I say I don’t mind it being a bit nippy – having spent the last three years living in Canada, nippiness is much preferred to the minus 35, snow up to your knees, fear of frostbite kind of cold that goes with Christmas there. I love how the season makes everyone a little happier. It even manages to melt my ice queen heart. I love sending Christmas cards, making eggnog and hiding presents before the big day. And, I feel at ease with you now so I trust you enough to tell you this: I may very well be 29, but I am still the first one up on Christmas morning, waking everyone up to open gifts. I love all of that, I really do. The only thing I can’t stand about Christmas is the music. Can we all just make a pact to put the Mariah Carey Christmas album and that God awful song by Slade in an incinerator? .............................................................................................

GARDENROUND-UP

By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural Society

....................................................................................................................................................................................................

Another year is nearly over and once again we have had all sorts of weather thrown at us. As the year progressed, some things have been late, others early – frustrating, especially if you had planned to enter a local show. Deciduous shrubs and trees can be pruned into shape now, taking away any crossed branches. In a small garden you may need to reduce their size slightly, but do not prune back too much. Hopefully, if you have grown sprouts, we will

have had a frost – it makes them taste much better! Potatoes planted in August will be just about ready for the Christmas table. Nothing much is going on in the garden in December, but no doubt some gardeners will find a job or two to do – even if it’s just cleaning and oiling their spades, forks etc. before putting them away.

Beecroft Infants School Gardening Club. Hopefully we are passing on some of our knowledge, as well as surplus plants for their greenhouse or vegetable plot. In the last three years we have seen the plot really take shape and last year Graham gave it a good digging over and installed wooden boards round the edges to stop any grass encroaching.

Cultivating the Gardeners of the Future

Each year they empty their compost bins on to it, resulting in the soil being in much better condition than when they started. In the autumn they usually plant shallots,

Our Chairman Graham Wheatley, his wife Rose and I are privileged to be able to help out at

onions and garlic sets, they also grow a good range of vegetables and last year managed to grow aubergines in the greenhouse. We have children’s classes in our four shows each year and all the classes in the school enter. In the early autumn show we put on a display of the vegetables grown by the children. The vegetable judges usually award a ‘highly commended’ card, giving the children a real boost. After all, these are our gardeners of the future! A Very Happy Christmas and New Year to all.

A TIME FOR GIVING For many of us this is a time of fun, indulgence and excess, but it’s also a time to reflect. This year, a number of major disasters shook the world (the Haiti earthquake in January, Pakistan floods in August, and, most recently the double whammy of the Java tsunami and volcanic eruption). These saw everyone dig deep for donations. But just because the news coverage stops, doesn’t mean the need for aid does. Recently Haiti was hit with a cholera outbreak and a tropical storm too, to make matters even worse. The DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) raised over £101 million over its six month Haiti appeal. In the worst earthquake to hit the country in over 200 years, 230,000 were killed, 300,000 injured and over 1.2 million left homeless. DEC donations have helped with food, medical and water supplies. The Red Cross has also provided much relief in the form of kitchen, shelter and hygiene kits, but much more is needed. Over 20 million people have been affected by the floods in Pakistan with over 1.9 million houses damaged or destroyed. Many displaced people are now returning to their home areas but emergency shelter is still needed. As of the end of October, ShelterBox had sent enough emergency shelter kits to Pakistan for over 140,000 people and are now working on a repatriation program. So, while we all lavish gifts on our families this Christmas, remember a small donation to a charity could help a family on the other side of the world in desperate need.

MUSICAL FOR CHRISTMAS!

WIN A FAMILY TICKET TO A CHRISTMAS CAROL North Leeds Life is delighted to be able to offer two Family Tickets (two adults, two children, worth £88 each) to our readers. All you have to do is answer this simple question:

What is the name of the director of A Christmas Carol at The West Yorkshire Playhouse? Send your answer to:

Shape-shifters, spirits and ghostly apparitions will haunt the West Yorkshire Playhouse stage this Christmas in Charles Dickens’ classic seasonal tale A Christmas Carol. This timeless story has been adapted by award-winning playwright Bryony Lavery and seasoned composer Jason Carr into a spectacular new musical. Following its critically acclaimed staging at Birmingham Repertory Theatre last year, A Christmas Carol is brought to the Playhouse by director Nikolai Foster and designer Colin Richmond and is sure to keep the whole family on the edge of their seats as strange apparitions and spooky spectres reveal the true meaning of Christmas.

Paula Rabbitt, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Quarry Hill, Playhouse Square, Leeds, LS2 7UP. The deadline for entries is Monday 20th December. All correct answers will be entered into a random draw. The decision of The West Yorkshire Playhouse is final and no correspondence will be entered into. No cash alternative is available.

A new cast is headed by Philip Whitchurch, who played Billy’s father in Broadway and West End productions of Billy Elliot. He also played Chief Inspector Philip Cato in The Bill and kooky neighbour Tyler in six series of BBC One sitcom My Hero. Mrs Fezziwig is played by accomplished actress and singer Beverly Klein, and Robert Finlayson and Sarah Moyle fill the roles of Bob and Mrs Cratchitt. This spectacular musical is at The Playhouse until Saturday 15th January. Tickets can be reserved by calling the Box Office on 0113 213 7700 or visiting www.wyp.org.uk

ARTS & CULTURE

TIMES PAST AND CHRISTMAS PRESENT! Leeds Civic Trust often figures in the local press when city developments are being discussed, which is hardly surprising since amongst its major aims are the encouragement of high standards of design, architecture and town planning. But did you know that it also exists to stimulate public interest in and care for the beauty, history and character of the city and locality?

We organise visits to major new buildings throughout the year, every February we put on a series of lunchtime talks on the history of Leeds, and in the summer there is a programme of guided walks exploring the history of the city, followed by a buffet supper. But there is more! The Leeds Civic Trust bookshop is the best place to look for books on the history of Leeds – books of pictures, old maps, the history of particular buildings, the history of Leeds transport, and books on almost every district of the city. Most are surprisingly inexpensive, with many costing less than £5. All have that special local appeal and would make excellent Christmas presents. Our bookshop, in Wharf Street, just off The Calls, is open 10am – 1pm Monday to Friday. You can also buy gift tokens for books or for membership. And you could even sign up as a member yourself!

LEEDS PHIL TO PERFORM FULL MESSIAH Leeds Philharmonic Chorus will perform Handel’s Messiah in its entirety at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 11th December. The Chorus is looking forward to the challenge of singing it in full, as it is more usual to sing this work with several movements omitted. The Phil will be accompanied by the highly-regarded Manchester Camerata, one of the UK’s leading chamber orchestras, conducted by Mark Hindley. Mark took over as Chorus Master in 2008 and, together with Music Director David Hill, has been helping the Phil go from strength to strength. The soloists are four exciting, award-winning young singers: soprano Sarah Power, alto Julianne Young, tenor James Greer, and bass Philip Smith. The organist is Christopher Johns. Tickets £15-£30 from Box Office 0113 224 3801 or www.leedsphil.org.

ILKLEY MANOR HOUSE: HISTORY, GALLERY AND CRAFTS! The Manor House is one of Ilkley’s oldest buildings. Standing on the remains of the Roman fort of Olicana, today the Manor House is an attractive museum and art gallery. On the ground floor are Roman artefacts from the fort and surrounding area, together with details of Ilkley as a Victorian spa town, where people flocked to take the Water Cure. The first floor galleries showcase regularly changing temporary exhibitions. The Manor House is no dreary moth ball of Ilkley’s past, but a lively hub of activities, performances, school visits and exhibitions provided by the local authority and Friends of the Manor House, a lively support group. People of all ages can take part in the workshops, view the exhibitions and museum and attend concerts and talks. The venue also plays host to events which showcase local arts and crafts, like the annual Presence Exhibition, a 3D Selling exhibition which runs until 9th January and offers an opportunity to buy some of the best of local crafts in time for Christmas. ALBUM REVIEW The Jim Jones Revue – Burning Your House Down

...........................

The latest release from this London based outfit hits the ground running and the breakneck pace doesn’t let up. The Jim Jones sound draws heavily on 50’s Rock ‘n’ Roll and the garage rock proto-punk of The Sonics, MC5 and The Stooges, by way of psychobilly groups like The Cramps. Opener Dishonest John sets the stall out early, its clattery intro giving way to a cavalcade of propulsive drums, frantic piano pounding, heavy riffing distorted guitars and the throat ripping, strangulated vocal of a man possessed.

By Brendan Campbell

It pretty much chugs on in this vein for the rest of the album. It’s relentlessly high octane and the band hammer it out like they damn well mean it, playing with verve, rhythmic precision and, particularly on piano, keen dexterity. What the record may lack in textural variety it makes up for with consistency and a singularity of purpose; it rocks really hard and it’s very loud. Simply put, these boys aren’t messing around. I’ve heard that The Jim Jones Revue magic really comes alive on stage and I can well believe their live shows are a riot. However, while Burning Your House Down is a well produced, impressively performed set of songs guaranteed to get the blood pumping, it benefits somewhat from its brevity. Were it to exceed its thirty three minutes by much it would risk outstaying it’s welcome.

PIXEL JUNKIES TOP 5 FOR CHRISTMAS Over the last few years, more and more blockbuster video games have topped both children’s and some adults Christmas lists, causing a decision- making headache! That’s why this year North Leeds Life and Pixel Junkies have teamed up to bring you the definitive list of must have titles for this year’s festive season. Merry Christmas! XBOX/PS3/PC BBFC 18+ Call of Duty Black Ops With undoubtedly the largest following of any multiplayer console game ever, the sequel to last year’s COD: Modern Warfare 2, will be kicking butt and taking names this Christmas. An essential purchase for any tactical combat fan; Black Ops is not for the faint hearted or casual gamer. Featuring an all new, cinematic campaign and intense multiplayer action, Black Ops is bound to be at the top of many lists.

1

Wii BBFC N/A Just Dance 2 Another hugely popular sequel arrives in the form of this Wii based dancing extravaganza – this time the follow-up to 2009’s biggest surprise sales success. Just Dance 2 features a huge range of popular songs from the recent past right back to the 1950s, offering something for all the family and crucially allowing two players to dance together in time! Just Dance 2 is the perfect party game this Christmas.

2

PC BBFC N/A Football Manager 2011 Some might say this is a strange inclusion in a Christmas top five, but Football Manager titles return year on year and have always proved to be ‘Man of the Match’ in the race for the title of ‘Best Football Management Simulation’. Now with improved on and off pitch control, an enhanced 3D graphics engine and more players, teams and leagues than ever before, this year’s FM is without doubt the best yet.

Wii BBFC N/A (PEGI 15+) James Bond: Goldeneye 007 This year’s remake of the classic N64 Goldeneye is important not only for nostalgic fans of the original, but also for a new generation of Bond and action game fans alike. Good news then, that the new Goldeneye is an enjoyable, well conceived reimagining of the best selling original game. Featuring all the best scenarios from the original film and a superb offline multiplayer mode with plenty of levels and characters, Goldeneye also offers fantastic value for money.

4

PS3 BBFC N/A Gran Turismo 5 With more delays than any other game in history, it’s debatable whether GT5 will emerge in time for Christmas at all. Despite this, early play testing of Sony’s epic racing simulator suggests that it will be more than worth the wait, with superb visuals, improved crash damage and improved AI coming together to create the most realistic game in its genre. Support for some of the most complex Racing Wheel/Pedal peripherals yet made also hints at GT5’s serious racing pedigree and could be an ideal gift for dad or older brother!

5

THIS YEAR’S REMAKE OF THE CLASSIC N64 GOLDENEYE IS IMPORTANT NOT ONLY FOR NOSTALGIC FANS OF THE ORIGINAL, BUT ALSO FOR A NEW GENERATION OF BOND AND ACTION GAME FANS ALIKE

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN! Once again the NSPCC’s Letter from Santa fundraising initiative is giving family and friends the chance to send a special child a magical letter from Santa for a donation of just £5. While making a child feel extra special, this initiative also helps raise vital funds to support children who are less fortunate. The letter is personalised with the child’s name and age and confirms that Santa and his sleigh will be stopping off in their home town to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. The letter is written in a hand script font and is beautifully illustrated on quality colourful paper. The envelope shows that it’s been safely delivered through ‘Express Rudolph Mail’! Also on offer is a Baby’s First Christmas letter from Santa, which is the perfect keepsake for newborns celebrating their first festive season. To order a Letter from Santa, visit www.nspcc. org.uk/santa or call 0845 839 9304. Everyone ordering a Letter from Santa this year will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win a free family trip to Lapland.

FIRST BURLEY MOOR RUN GREAT SUCCESS! The first Burley Moor run on 6th November saw 147 runners of all abilities, from local joggers to experienced fell racers, turn out to complete the run. The majority of runners were from Burley-inWharfedale making it the local festival event it was hoped it would be. There were also entrants from as far away as Manchester, Molton and Earby. The 10k course went from Scalebor Park up to the high point of Burley Moor and back to the park. It was an impressive sight to see the 150 or so runners strung out along the ridge between Burley Woodhead and the Cow and Calf. The winner, in a time of 40 minutes, was from Ilkley, and the first lady home (58 minutes) was from Burley-in-Wharfedale. The event was a great success and it is hoped that it will become a regular fixture in the village calendar. This success can be put down largely to the wonderful volunteer stewarts and helpers on the day.

PHYSIOTHERAPY: THE SCIENCE-BASED HEALTHCARE PROFESSION

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Physiotherapy is a sciencebased healthcare profession which uses a physical approach to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social wellbeing after an accident, surgery or pain from overuse activity. Leeds Sports Injury and Physiotherapy Clinic has been established for 25 years and has worked with amateur, professional and international sports teams, dance and theatre groups. The core of our business has always been in treating the

general complaints that we all suffer from, eg: sprains, strains, upper and lower limb problems. Recently we’ve seen many more cases of neck and back problems caused by increased use of computers, poor posture and our more sedentary lifestyles. We also help many expectant mothers cope with the problems caused by the extra weight carried during pregnancy. Treatment can be hands-on, electrotherapy and exercise programmes tailored to each patient. Not only do we aim to eradicate the immediate symptoms, but also prevent recurrences in the future. Leeds Sports Injury & Physiotherapy Clinic is recognised by all healthcare insurance providers.
