St Gemma’s Hospice to the rescue! Register to have your tree collected by St Gemma’s volunteers in return for a donation. This is the perfect solution – it saves you the hassle of going to the tip whilst supporting the work of St Gemma’s. Registered trees will be collected between Tuesday 7th and Saturday 11th January 2020. Simply leave your tree in the location you have specified by 8am on Tuesday 7th January and St Gemma’s will do the rest. The trees will be taken to various sites run by Leeds City Council, who are kindly allowing the

hospice free access. The postcodes the team will collect from are LS6, LS7, LS8, LS14, LS15, LS16, LS17, LS18 and LS28. This is the sixth year that St Gemma’s has run this service and so far has raised over £73,000 towards patient care. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

(ERNST) ADOLF POWOLNY (1839-1915) Chef and Restaurateur Celebrity chefs seem to be everywhere nowadays in the media, telling us how and what to cook. More than a century ago, when English cuisine was still sneered at for knowing only one sauce (gravy!), Leeds could boast its own continental celebrity chef who brought fine dining to the town to match the famous London chefs. His restaurant became renowned for its elegance and sophistication and he was the go-to man for top level catering at banquets, balls, and celebrations across the North – anything from buffets in the crypt at Fountains Abbey to luncheon for the Chinese Ambassador 1500 feet down a coal mine at Normanton!

Born in Zittau in Saxony, Adolf Powolny had trained in the vast royal kitchens of the King in Dresden as an ‘artistic confectioner’. He was only 18 when he came to Leeds in 1857, perhaps looking for better prospects or specially recruited. He joined Godfrey Wood’s longestablished catering firm in Commercial Street and was part of the team when Wood’s won the prestigious contract for the great formal banquet which followed Queen Victoria’s opening of the Town Hall in 1858 – what a thrill for this young new arrival. In 1862, only 23, he was encouraged to set up his own business at 3 Bond Street, advertising to the ‘nobility and gentry’ his stock of German, French and English delicacies (caviar, pate de fois gras), and his new dining rooms, where weary businessmen could drop in for oysters and wine. With little capital he had to turn his hand to every task, but he began to build an enviable reputation. A speciality was outside catering for all manner of social and professional occasions, hiring in armies of waiters as required: the annual Bachelors’ Ball, Medical Association Annual Meetings, society weddings, Grand Masonic Balls – he joined the Freemasons in 1868 and remained a life-long member. Everyone loved his sumptuous, recherché,

artistic food, and he became the caterer of choice for all elite events.

Especially royal visits: in 1872 he was chosen to provide the luncheon when Prince Arthur came to open Roundhay Park and supper for the ball that evening. And in 1885 he was caterer for the visit from the Prince and Princess of Wales (the future King and Queen) to open the new Yorkshire College buildings and the Coliseum – he baked a special cherry tart for Alexandra, her favourite! A great royalist (with shared German connections), he commissioned a gold finger bowl with the royal coat of arms exclusively for visiting royalty. Quality and style were his trademark. By the early 1890s he had extended his restaurant and fitted it out lavishly with oriental pillars and tall mirrors, deep crimson hangings, small round dining tables, each with a shaded lamp, thick carpets on the double staircase leading to dining rooms upstairs with costly but tasteful furnishings, and a snug smokingroom. In his kitchens at Christmas more than 50 chefs and their assistants toiled, preparing all sorts of meats, including stuffed and garnished boars’ heads (‘made to

grin most ferociously’!), silvery salmon, huge cakes richly decorated with icing and marzipan, chocolate specialities. What a vision of excess! Not to modern taste was one of the specialities: turtle soup, beloved of gourmets and invalids, prepared every day from live turtles he had imported from the West Indies – a wildlife disaster in the making. His personal life was kept private. He had married his wife, Annie, a young assistant in his shop, in 1873, but sadly their first child died and Annie herself died of consumption in 1880, aged only 27. A wealthy man by the 1890s, he moved upmarket with his daughter to live in a fine house at 2 Hillary Place (part of the University campus now). Small and dapper, with white side-whiskers, he was known for his quiet courtesy, modesty, and consideration for his customers and his loyal staff: ‘a perfect artist in his line’. But it must have been a pressurised life overseeing his busy, hectic empire, and in 1897 he sold the business as a going concern and retired to Harrogate, where after a long illness he died in 1915. He was buried at Woodhouse near his wife.

Polowny’s carried on for another 60 years, with separate Assembly Rooms at one point and a very successful branch in Hull. Adapting to changing times, the Bond Street restaurant, affectionately known as ‘Polly’s’, was a favourite with societies like the Publicity Club and the Luncheon Club, and with local journalists. From the 1920s onwards the tea ‘dansants’ were an attraction (1s 6d, including tea) twice a week, and dinner dancing every evening: escapist pleasure even in the dark times of WW2. But it all ended in 1960, and after a century the evocative Polowny name disappeared from the Leeds scene.

Funding Community Projects in The Kirkstall Valley Kirkstall Valley Grants recently held its second awards evening. The grants programme, a collaboration between Open Source Arts and Kirkstall Valley Grants, is sponsored by Power to Change and aims to support projects that improve environment and wellbeing for communities in the Kirkstall Valley. In particular, the focus is on what can be achieved by small-scale projects with limited resources, and how that can inspire lasting community connection. The winners were: James Gray - Park Green Community Project - a community-owned space in Armley in desperate need of improvements. Residents are changing the Green into an ecological space, with a bee-friendly border with wildflowers, insect hotels, communal composting for

kitchen waste and maintenance to the iron fence. The project hopes to encourage residents to take pride in their green spaces and share skills and knowledge through gardening, and engage with recycling, especially food scraps. Dr Tig Calvert - Flower Gardens - A group of neighbours are planting flower gardens off Kirkstall Lane (Ash Road/Langdales and surrounding area) - particularly properties where landlords or residents are unable to maintain a garden. They will supply planters, hanging baskets, plants and aftercare to enable the community to enjoy bee and butterfly attracting flowers and natural wild areas where appropriate.

Priya Sidharh and Beth Stepan - One Billion Rising Leeds is a response to the UN statistic that one in three women experience rape or serious violence. It celebrates the work of local charities and supports them in their aims, through community collaboration. It will be facilitating workshops so people can come together, get creative and express solidarity with the charities that work towards ending violence against women and girls. Mediaeval Baebes’ Come to Leeds Minster The Mediaeval Baebes will stop off at Leeds Minster on Wednesday 18th December, 7.30pm, for an evening of music, dance and theatre. Inspired by a time when poetry and music invoked sensory pleasure, they will perform songs from their new album ‘A Pocketful of Posies’, Christmas carol classics, and the haunting title theme from TV’s ‘Victoria’,

along with other contemporary and traditional songs. After three chart-topping classical albums, an Ivor Novello Award, numerous sell-out tours and, most recently, two Emmy- Award nominations for their soundtrack to ‘Victoria’, the Mediaeval Baebes have established themselves as one the most successful,

early music and folk ensembles in Europe. The Spirit of Christmas is Back! Leeds Male Voice Choir is back with its Spirit of Christmas popular extravaganza of yuletide favourites. This year it takes place at Leeds Cathedral, Great George Street, LS2 8BE at 7.45pm on 7th December. Now in its sixth year, the Spirit of Christmas will also feature the Yorkshire Brass Quintet. The annual concert has proved so successful, that the choir has added an extra date and will also perform at the Riley Smith Hall in Tadcaster on 14th December. Leeds Phil & Lit Celebrates Scientiﬁc Developments That Changed the World When Matthew Barzun, the former US ambassador to the UK, visited Leeds for the first time, he admitted that all he really knew about the city was that the band 'The Who' had played a famous live concert here in 1970! However, he might have been even more impressed to know that Leeds is also home to some major scientific developments that have changed the world. To celebrate these achievements, Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society has just published two small books. The first of these, by David Sellers, tells the story of William Gascoigne who, thanks to the intrusion of a spider into his optical equipment, invented the telescopic sight and the telescope micrometer. Tragically, Gascoigne was killed at the age of only 32 at the Battle of Marston Moor in the English Civil War, but his work went on to play a crucial role in the development of astronomy.

The second book, 'From Dark Satanic Mills to DNA' is by Kersten Hall, of the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science at the University of Leeds, and explores how two Nobel prizes have been won for science carried out in Leeds which, thanks to the local textile industry, has gone on to play an important role in one of the landmarks of 20th century science - our understanding of DNA, the genetic molecule. Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society was founded in 1819 with the aim of promoting arts and science in Leeds and is delighted to celebrate its bicentenary with these two books which, it is hoped, will bring these fascinating tales to a wider audience. Phoenix Dance Theatre’s ‘Black Waters’ Blends Cultures and Emotions A chance meeting at a dance festival in India sparked the idea of collaboration between Phoenix Dance Theatre and two exciting dance practitioners, choreographers and composers – the artistic directors of Kolkata-based Rhythmosaic, Shambik Ghose and Dr Mitul Sengupta. Soon emails and phone calls were ﬂying back & forth, as they searched for inspiration to create this new dance piece. Two forgotten, horrific events in Colonial history emerged – one in India, the other in the Caribbean, both playing out around water – and ‘Black Waters’ emerged. For the first time, Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director, Sharon Watson, will collaborate with two very different dance artists who have performed and taught all over the world, in a fusion of western contemporary dance and classical kathak Indian dance. ‘Black Waters’ will be a hugely emotional journey. It draws on the fate of the slave ship Zong, headed for Black River, Jamaica, and carrying over twice as many slaves as the

ship could accommodate – 130 slaves were thrown overboard to their deaths… then the owners attempted to claim the insurance on their lives. A hundred years later, Kala Pani (Hindi for black waters) was a colonial prison on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, used to exile political prisoners during India’s struggle for independence. Over 80,000 political prisoners were held there in solitary confinement and very few survived. It was brutal. Black Waters will explore how British colonial forces commodified people and, as a consequence, saw a blending of cultures and the birth of fragmented identities for whom home has always remained a contested space. “It’s an exploration of place, worth and belonging, which can often be conflicting for people of colour”, said Sharon.

With multiculturalism at its heart, ‘Black Waters’ is both emotionally evocative and culturally relevant, showing how people extract value, inspiration and hope from despair. With a commonality of thought, the three choreographers set out to create something quite unique. These lost histories are very dark events that are not now in the public domain. But, where as there is darkness, struggle and survival there is also change, hope, and uplifting moments. Working together they have delved deeply into the psychological effects of such events. Shambik Ghose and Dr Mitul Sengupta are also composing the music – carefully melding Indian and Caribbean rhythms and instruments and playing with the tonality and texture of sound. We are definitely in for a treat when ‘Black Waters’ premières at Leeds Playhouse in February 2020. Phoenix dancers have grabbed the narrative with both hands and immersed themselves in this incredibly strong story. Hold on to your hats!

Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Black Waters Heritage Project will engage with eight community groups, reaching 130 young people aged 8 – 18 and shining a spotlight on two examples of displacement and enslavement often overlooked. It aims to inform young people of the impact of British Colonial rule and the diaspora born from the forced transportation of people. The young people will share their stories at an exhibition in March 2020 and later produce an online resource highlighting the two stories.

Standing Together with Opera North

Standing Together is a project of the Opera North Youth Chorus (ages 15 – 19). They were recently over in Prague singing in the attic at Terezin Concentration Camp, where the opera Brundibár was first performed by the Jewish youngsters incarcerated there during the Second World War. They also performed ‘Wiegala’ (a work based on a text by the Jewish poet Isle Weber who perished at Auschwitz) at the Jeruzalemska Synagogue. “I learnt a lot more about the personal, individual impact of the Holocaust on people and their lives”, said Sarah (18) from Horsforth Sixth Form. “This was more about the human experience and I think that’s overlooked in the teaching that we get on the Holocaust in schools. If we learn about what’s happened in the past, we can stop it from happening again and I think a lot of the things that happened in the Holocaust are worryingly similar to things that are currently going on now.” On return, they started working with

composer Michael Betteridge and director Anna Pool to create their response to the atrocities inflicted on Jews during World War II. They will perform the finished piece at Leeds Town Hall during the Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations in January. “I really liked hearing the stories of actual survivors and what they had been through”, said Bronte (14) Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School. “I’m very much looking forward to telling other people about the Holocaust and trying to spread the message through something that I love – music.” Further performances are planned in Huddersfield and on the concourse at Sage Gateshead as part of the Brundibár Festival in February. The young people have already visited the Huddersfield Memorial Exhibition Centre, which gave them an insight into survivors’ individual experiences at the start of the project.

This week marks the beginning of Cyber Protect's newest campaign highlighting courier fraud. In the last two years over 2,000 reports of courier fraud were reported. Courier Fraud West Yorkshire Police recently put out a warning about ‘Courier Fraud’. This is when fraudsters telephone a potential victim, claiming to be from their internet / phone provider, bank, police or other law enforcement authority and then trick the person into revealing their credit / debit card details including the pin. These scams usually involve someone claiming to be from a reputable company or authority and telling you about fraudulent payments on your debit or credit card. Sometimes they will even ask you to call the relevant company to prove the call is genuine – however, they keep the line open at their end, so you are still in fact speaking to them. They then ask for

your pin and send a courier or taxi to pick up the card in question. They then use the card to spend your money. If you receive a suspicious call, the Police advise: • End the call immediately • Never provide your pin or password over the phone or online - neither banks nor police will ask you to do this • Your bank will never send someone to your home to collect cash, cards, PINs or cheque books • Report any suspicious calls to Action Fraud or call them on 0300 123 2040

Simon on the Streets Awarded Homeless Link Grant The homeless charity, Simon on the Streets, was recently awarded £29,358 through the Homeless Link’s Ending Women’s Homelessness grants programme, funded by the Government’s Tampon Tax Fund. Women’s homelessness is a significant national issue with violence and abuse often contributing to their homelessness. Homeless Link’s grants programme aims to help end women’s homelessness by building capacity for gender and trauma informed services and developing partnerships between homelessness and specialist women’s sector charities. Simon on the Streets will use the funding to recruit two new women's outreach workers, one full time/ one part time, with the aim of reducing the numbers of women living on the streets, supporting those in temporary accommodation, and engaging with the 'hidden homeless' by delivering gender and trauma informed assertive outreach

Through partnership work with St Anne’s Community Centre, Simon on the Streets will support women accessing the new Safe Space women-only emergency accommodation to address their needs both emotionally and practically. “Women’s homelessness is a growing crisis”, said Tasmin Maitland, Homeless Link's Assistant Director of Practice and Partnerships. “Despite this, women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness are one of the most marginalised groups in our society and the specialist support that they need is often lacking or non-existent. “We are delighted to be able to award Simon on the Streets a grant that will have a real impact on the support that women experiencing homelessness in Leeds receive, and ultimately contribute to ending women’s homelessness for good.”

Mobility Scooter Hire Service Leeds City Council, working in partnership with the William Merritt Centre recently reinstated its mobility scooter hire scheme, operating from within the Merrion Centre. It will be known as William Merritt Centre – Shopmobility, and will initially run Tuesday to Saturday, 10am – 3.30pm. The scheme will have a a fleet of eight four-wheel scooters, each with stick holders and a carrying capacity of 23.6 stones. A small selection of manual wheelchairs will follow. People will be able to book on-line or by phone. There is an annual membership fee of £10, and a session charge of £5 for members/ £10 non members. ‘Love Meanwood’ Awarded £10,000 by National Lottery

Meanwood Valley Partnership (MVP) was recently awarded £10,000 by the National Lottery to kick off its ‘Love Meanwood’ project, which aims to ask everyone in Meanwood for their ideas on how to improve the area and how to encourage and support local projects to achieve this. The project will create the ‘Love Meanwood Vision for 2030’, which will include ideas on how to make community projects happen, design concepts for green and public spaces, and principles to guide response to future commercial development. The plan will launch toward the end of Spring 2020. “This is a fantastic start to this exciting project, and we’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way”, said Janet Matthews, Vice Chair of MVP. “Meanwood is an exciting, vibrant community that is changing fast. We know there are lots of ideas and opportunities out there for improving our area, which crosses three ward boundaries and has many distinct neighbourhoods.

Two well-established GP practices in North Leeds, Westfield Medical Centre at The Reginald Centre, Chapeltown Road, and Allerton Medical Centre, 6 Montreal Avenue, Chapel Allerton, are proposing to merge their services as of Spring 2020. Their aim is to improve and future-proof safe, effective and sustainable primary care for their patients and the local community. Whilst they will remain in their current buildings and patients will have continuity of care with a named GP, patients will also have the flexibility to access additional services at either site. The merger will be subject to all regulatory approvals and appropriate levels of engagement with patients and staff (with a final decision publicised in February). The plan to merge was a result of careful consideration to ensure the future viability of the practices, whilst protecting and enhancing patient care. A larger patient and staff base will help them deal with some of the

challenges they face, putting them in a better position to invest in staff and their continued development, as well as facilities and equipment. Both practices share the same ethos and vision for patient services. One united practice will allow them to attract and retain new talent, across both clinical and support staff - resulting in a reduction in locum doctors and administration per clinician, and an increase in appointments, out of hours, and urgent care capacity. Sharing staff expertise and best practice across all functions with greater training and career development will provide them with multiple opportunities to work to scale. In particular, it will allow them to support GP’s special interests and work more effectively within the local Primary Care Network and community. Two years ago, the Chapel and Retreat Centre at Norwood in the Washburn Valley was on the brink of closure. However, a meeting of the Methodist Wharfedale & Aireborough Circuit pledged financial support and an ambitious redevelopment project was undertaken. The Chapel and Retreat Centre have taken on a new lease of life. Plans for events for 2020 have been drawn up – these include a Folk Evening in May, Afternoon Tea and a concert in July, and various talks on topics ranging from veterinary practice to Kinder Transport. There will also be days in February, April and October where people can experience peace and tranquillity for a day. The centre can be booked by groups for a day, whether these be outdoor sports such as cycling and walking or by companies wishing to have an ‘away day’. It is also available for Children’s parties where youngsters can enjoy being in the outdoors and the adjacent woods. It can be booked for weddings too. At this time of year, I would usually be delighting at the prospect of evenings at the German Market with its everexpanding range of stalls, bars and eateries - not to mention the fun fair and Leeds very own big wheel in front of the Art Gallery. I would be encouraging residents to make the most of pop-up attractions around the city, Winter Lights at Tropical World and, of course, the Wizard of Oz at Leeds Playhouse - not least because it stars the fantastically talented Lucy Sherman - one of our North Leeds resident superstars. However, with the strange spectacle of a December General Election, I seem to be spending an inordinate amount

of time pounding the streets - more often than not in the cold and driving rain. So, if you see me, please say hello - a warm greeting certainly goes a long way to cheer one up (& I wouldn’t say no to a cuppa!). A regular concern that residents bring to my attention revolves around local bus services – No.51, No.48 and the various No.7s. These are run by First Bus, who run the majority of bus services across Leeds. This is a private company and is in no way part of the Council, which makes it something of a challenge for Councillors to bring about improvements. However, that doesn’t mean we ignore concerns. We recently held a public meeting with First Bus and someone from West Yorkshire Combined Authority that was very well attended, and we will be holding another in the new year. We are pushing First Bus hard to try to ensure that our North Leeds residents get the bus service they deserve and expect. Where this isn’t happening, we

are ensuring these public meetings are a mechanism for residents to put their concerns to First Bus directly. Finally, we are starting to put together our lists of streets to be visited during our Spring and Summer street surgeries. 50 MILLION MORE APPOINTMENTS IN GP SURGERIES Prime Minister announces more staff and appointments in GP surgeries. In his first speech as Prime Minister, Boris Johnson said that people shouldn’t have to wait three weeks to see their GP. And now the Prime Minister has announced plans to help end the backlog of appointments. By recruiting an extra 6,000 doctors and 6,000 other

GP surgery staff, the Government will be able to increase the number of GP appointments each year. That means you’ll be able to get the healthcare you need, when you need it. The Health Secretary said that he recognises ‘our GPs are under increasing pressure, so we will put record funding into our GP surgeries to help everyone get the healthcare they need.’

Most of the leaves will have fallen by now, but it’s good to rake up any that have collected on your lawn or your paths and pop them in a bag (I re-use old compost bags for this) in a corner of the garden where they can rot down to make a good soil conditioner to put on your flower beds next year. Make a few holes in the bag for drainage and ventilation so that the leaves don’t just go slimy.

And, it is a special pleasure at this time of year to enjoy the home-grown foods you preserved in the summer. It’s fun to bring some greenery indoors this month, especially if you like making festive wreaths and arrangements. I like to use the seedheads and flowers I dried in the Summer and Autumn, mixed with branches of evergreen foliage. Dried Hydrangea flowers and seed pods from poppies look wonderful with pinecones, rose hips, laurel leaves or sprigs of Pine or Rosemary. Many people are not aware that five species of owl can be seen in the UK. As well as the more familiar tawny, little and barn owls, our countryside is also home to long-eared and short-eared owls.

As a breeding species the short-eared owl is limited to upland areas of northern England and Scotland, although it may move further south in Winter. It is a medium sized owl with mottled brown plumage, pale underparts and very long, narrow wings. Perhaps its most striking feature is its staring yellow eyes surrounded by black patches in the centre of its pale face. The ‘ears’, however, are no more than small tufts of feathers on the top of its head, which are only rarely visible. It often flies in daylight, especially at dawn and dusk, hunting with slow wingbeats and short glides. It can also be seen perched on fence posts, in trees or even on the ground. Its favourite food is voles and other small mammals, but it will also eat small birds, and sometimes insects or amphibians. In Winter, our resident population is increased by owls migrating from Scandinavia, Russia and Finland, particularly to coastal areas. Our local Leeds nature reserve, St Aidan’s near Swillington, is a good place to look for short-

eared owls, where they can be seen in Winter hunting at dusk along the hillsides. Leeds RSPB Group

Sound&Vision Mister Dodo Bones & The One-Eyed Jacks Taking Names This latest release from Mister Dodo Bones and his One Eyed Jacks is a triumph, an album of rough-hewn folk blues where compellingly realised original material sits comfortably alongside idiosyncratic reimaginings of deep cut classics and half-forgotten relics. Thoroughly tonally consistent with resonant, warm production, Taking Names hangs together satisfyingly while conjuring an authentic vintage feel which shuffles along with a casual, shouldershrugging, no-big-deal confidence. Though undeniably retro-styled, the album manages to blend a sense of wistful nostalgia with a rambling restlessness and an air of urgent immediacy. This being the blues, melancholy is always just around the corner but Dodo Bones growls his raspy vocals like a man who’s seen more than a thing or two, who’s rolled and tumbled and who, when those blues come to town, will know how to handle them. These weather-beaten ballads, sprinkled with rueful grit gleam with hard-won wisdom, looking askance at the perennial lures of the barroom and the open road. The playing on the record honours the grand tradition of acoustic blues; subtle, unshowy guitar arrangements embellished with slick fingerpicking and judiciously deployed country twang.

The accomplished fretwork and shimmering, easy-going percussion coalesce around Dodo Bones’ grizzled, rumbling voice to envelop the listener in a fuzzy, bluesy (and probably somewhat boozy) embrace. I find Mr Dodo Bones & The One Eyed Jacks to be charming company and they’re on terrific form here. Like a reliable old drinking buddy, Taking Names is an album you’ll be happy to kick back and share a bottle with. Cara Dillon Returns with her Magical Christmas Show Cara Dillon, one of the most celebrated folk voices to have come out of Ireland, is touring her magical Christmas show ‘Upon A Winter’s Night’ for a fourth year running and will be at Leeds University’s Riley Smith Theatre (4 Lifton Place, LS29JZ) on Sunday 15th December.

Cara is one of the finest exponents of traditional Irish song. Together with her husband and musical partner, Sam Lakeman, she has steered an eclectic musical path defying the typical pigeonholes that hinder many artists in her genre. Celebrated for entwining traditional and contemporary elements, she has earned both commercial success and critical acclaim. She and her band will capture the mystery of Christmas with a collection of festive songs both ancient and modern, reminding everyone that the festive season can be about more than commercialism. In late 1985, at the height of the cold war, a six-part thriller about a nefarious nuclear plot was broadcast on BBC Two. It began as a sombre story about a detective haunted by the death of his daughter, and became a beguiling exploration of atomic and political power in Thatcher’s Britain. Following 11 Bafta nominations, ‘Edge of Darkness’ won six awards and became known as one the finest dramas to come out of the UK. Now the series is revived on Blu-ray disc and can be seen for the first time in an all-new high definition transfer. Filmed in the shockwaves of the apocalyptic ‘Threads’, and broadcast a year before the catastrophic Chernobyl disaster, this series is a time capsule of anti-nuclear sentiment, but it’s lost none of its explosive impact. In fact, much of its anxiety and scepticism seems more relevant now than ever. The drama surrounds Yorkshire police officer Ronald Craven — sole witness to his daughter’s murder by a lone gunman. When Craven uncovers evidence of Emma’s criminal activities within a radical anti-nuclear group, a circle tightens around his search for the killer, seemingly influenced by covert powers. Soon, he uncovers a sinister nuclear conspiracy, buried in the heart of Yorkshire, which threatens the security of the entire nation… The fearlessly downbeat script comes from Troy Kennedy Martin, co-creator of ‘Z-Cars’, ‘The Sweeney’ and ‘The Italian Job’. His storytelling is often understated and at times disorientating, sketching out tempered dialogue for a documentary-like realism. Performances riff off the page with a cold impartiality, as if director Martin Campbell has demanded the cast dial down their delivery to flat exchanges. The result is a company of earthbound, living performances which are as intense as they are intriguing. Craven is played by Bob Peck, the haunted and hawkish actor who would

become internationally known as the ‘Clever girl’ park gamekeeper in ‘Jurassic Park’. The North Leeds-born actor (who grew up on Spen Lane, no less) delivers a hypnotic masterclass in the art of understatement. He barely blinks in some scenes, and his underplayed study of paternal grief burdens every scene. We learn that the ill-fated Emma (Joanne Whalley) was an activist who got well out of her depth. Her murder is the catalyst for a conspiracy, yet it’s Craven’s grief — spotted throughout as a recurring apparition — that haunts the drama. Their relationship is explored through post-mortem depression, and the interplay is one of the series’ most memorably innovative features. Supporting performances come from a recognisable line-up including Charles Kay and Ian McNeice as a camp civil servant double act, with Jon Don Baker as a boisterous, double-dealing US agent. There’s also no missing Blackadder’s Tim McInnerny in a startlingly straight role as a dubious socialist agitator. Which neatly leads into the writer’s ambiguous political stance. The script seems to have a pop at both the lunacy of blind idealism as much as the evil greed of globalism, asking the viewer to question allegiances from both sides of the circus. The argument remains profound, and the collision between Craven’s conservatism against the left-wing martyrdom of his daughter mirrors some of the generational divides seen today.

Much could also be said about Eric Clapton and Michael Kamen’s stirring soundtrack, fusing elegiac guitar solos with haunting synth strings. Combined with Martin Campbell’s intense photography and editing (he’d soon move onto the Bond movies), ‘Edge of Darkness’ owes more to cinema than the small screen and is arguably a turning point in how television drama could, and should, be made. These qualities have never been clearer thanks to a digital restoration from the original 16mm film negatives. Instead of looking like a piece of neglected and grainy archive drama, the episodes now gleam with hidden details and depth — appearing like a new film that just seems to be located in the bleak mid-Eighties. Edge of Darkness is an influential and indelible experience which demands to be seen by a new generation. It shows what the BBC was once capable of achieving, and delivers a strong ecological message through sedate, believable performances. It’s essential viewing — just don’t confuse it with that disastrous Hollywood remake starring Mel Gibson.

Movies at the Royal Armouries The Royal Armouries Museum is hosting a series of movie nights to coincide with its new display, ‘Make: Believe’. The cult film selection is inﬂuenced by the themes, props and weapons found in the display, which explores the role of arms and armour in popular culture and showcases the museum’s extensive collection of arms and armour from stage, film and television. Each screening (tickets £5.50) starts at 7pm with an introductory talk by an in-house or guest expert and the chance to see some of the props and weapons used in the films. Key objects include Imperial and rebel Blasters from Star Wars, an Alien’s Pulse Rifle, Lord of the Rings swords, Monty Python helmets, and Lancelot’s hero armour from Excalibur. There will also be tips on what to look out for on the big screen, and behind-the-scenes insights. “To create the Lancelot armour, which is part of the museum’s new ‘Make: Believe’ display, myself, John [Boorman, the director of ‘Excalibur’] and Tony [Anthony Pratt, Production Designer

of ‘Excalibur‘] had an afternoon at the Armouries at the Tower of London to see the original armour”, said legendary screen armourer Terry English. “We gained a huge amount of knowledge, did some preliminary sketches – and that was the start of the whole building process. From there it evolved, like an organic thing. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences with movie night visitors.” The museum will open between 6pm – 7pm on movie nights to allow visitors to view the new display first. Sing Your Heart Out with Big Al’s Choir Leeds is very fortunate to have so many ambitious musicians who are determined to not just build ensembles but communities as well. To make the jump from band to community, the project needs to be accessible, inclusive, and most of all fun. Big Al’s Big Choir has been belting out bangers for a little over a year. Teacher and singer Alice Higgins decided to start the choir after hearing too many people lament that they couldn’t really sing or read music or just wanted to sing. Where were the platforms for those who just wanted to sing their hearts out? A few hurried messages to friends and acquaintances and suddenly 25 people were gathered at the University of Leeds looking for nothing more than a chance to sing. The choir has not just grown in size but also in ability. “A year ago, we were singing threepart harmony, now we are singing eight-part unaccompanied pieces”, said Alice. “To see people

from all musical backgrounds coming together to just sing for the fun of it is fantastic. Singing really is a therapy and Big Al’s Big Choir offers a platform where people can come and make new friends and sing some fun songs.” The choir isn’t just a social space but is also an opportunity for people to really perform. There are over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this number is expected to rise to a million by 2025. Tanya said: “Candlelighters have been invaluable to us as a family, not only do they support you on the ward they help you on the whole journey. They also provide us with financial help when needed, respite breaks for the family, emotional support along with sibling support for our son Oliver. Without Candlelighters this journey would have been far more difficult and we just want to be able to give something back to them, they are your extended family and this counts for so much as you tend to be away from your own for months at a time!!

A Steiner Waldorf school based in Chapeltown celebrates its 20th anniversary this month and is calling for more pupils to join its innovative, independent setting. The school provides high-quality care for children up to the age of nine, based on the internationally recognised principles of the Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship. There are currently over 1,200 Steiner schools worldwide and 2,000 early years settings across 60 different countries – with 36 in the UK & Ireland. Beechtree Steiner Initiative provides a welcoming, supportive and nourishing environment for its children and their families.
