Dear Readers, Well this year has been quite a rollercoaster and we have been distracted with financial crisis and uproar in the European Union. But Christmas has crept up on us and gives us all a chance to draw breath and get into the Christmas spirit – have fun, celebrate family and friends, and share a little with the many who may be bumping along the bottom right now. This month we invite you to ‘Put a Local Author in Your Stocking’! Leeds Writers seem to have been coming out of the woodwork recently and what better time to acquaint a few more people with their work? We also had a word with a few great little eateries around our area and asked them for a recipe that could be part of an alternative festive meal (in case you get sick of turkey and Christmas pudding!).

LEFT BANK WINS ‘HERITAGE ANGELS’ AWARD Left Bank, the former St Margaret of Antioch Church on Cardigan Road, was recently awarded a ‘Heritage Angels’ Award for saving an ‘at risk’ building. The church was falling into ruin until Left Bank, with the help of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, restored the redundant building and transformed it into an arts and events venue. The Heritage Angels Awards were the brainchild of Andrew Lloyd-Webber, who worked with English Heritage to develop a prize that would honour the efforts of local people working together to save important buildings in their communities. Left Bank, a Grade 2 listed building, was the only nominee of sixteen from the north of England. The judges commended the volunteers supporting Left Bank, who had ‘brought enormous energy, creativity and life back to their vast red brick hulk of an inner city church’.
endorsement of the years of slog that so many people have given to get Left Bank up and running. And it’s great encouragement to keep going with all the work we’ve still got to do.” The judges – Simon Thurley (Chief Executive, English Heritage), Andrew Lloyd Webber, Melvyn Bragg, Historian Bettany Hughes, Charles Moore (Editor, The Telegraph), and Richard Chartres (Bishop of London) – said: “All 16 shortlisted groups were exceptional and the judges had a hard time deciding between them. But in the end the winners stood out for their passion, perseverance and imagination, for the scale of the challenges they had taken on and for the legacy they leave behind...” Mike Love, one of Left Bank’s steering group,

The building has also been nominated for a prize in this year’s Leeds Architecture Awards. “This is a fantastic boost for us”, said Simon Hall, who started out as a volunteer and now works part-time for the project. “When Left Bank took over the building ten years ago it was only fit to house the many hundreds of pigeons that lived in the rafters. This award is a wonderful validation of the numerous hours that our volunteers have put in to making the building safe for the many visitors and users, who immediately fall in love with what might be the most surprising building in the city.” “We were really thrilled to be shortlisted and when we went down to the awards ceremony in London, we were just happy to be there”, explained Left Bank’s project manager, Vik Banks. “It didn’t really sink in until afterwards that we’d actually won. It’s such an incredible
was first inspired by the building in 1978, when it was in regular use as an Anglican church. When the building was closed in 1995, Mike began to imagine how the building could be used. Eventually, in 2002, a dedicated group of people set up a trust to buy the building. A lot of the original ideas for the building were dropped and Left Bank Leeds began to emerge as people got involved and asked to use the building for art and music events. With a much needed injection of Heritage Lottery funding, repair work began in 2007 and since then Left Bank has slowly taken shape. 2012 holds new challenges for Left Bank. They have just registered as a community interest company and are applying for an entertainments licence, so that they can hold more events and earn income to support the use of the building for arts and community activities. And, as everyone knows who’s been to Left Bank, the other big challenge is to sort out the heating! www.leftbankleeds.org.uk

OTLEY VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS FAYRE – THE BIGGEST YET! The 26th Otley Victorian Christmas Fayre is almost here! Another wonderful day is planned for Sunday 11th December, 12 noon – 6pm. This will be largest Fayre in its history, with many old favourites and some great new attractions. Once again the Market Place will be the centre of activities for the younger children. Five local schools will be singing on the stage, as well as some adult choirs. Children will be able to see, pet and have their photographs taken with two beautiful reindeer, as well as enjoying a traditional Punch and Judy show and children’s rides.
BLACK, WHITE AND BLING! A fun charity event in aid of Save Babies Through Screening
A variety of stalls on Kirkgate, Boroughgate, in the Black Horse Stable yard and Bay Horse Court provide an opportunity to buy beautiful Christmas gifts and support local groups. After his reindeer are settled in the Market Place, Santa Claus will be found in his grotto on Mercury Row. The Otley Victorian Christmas Fayre programme is on sale at over 30 local shops. It features a map showing where you will find everything, as well as a timetable for the stage events. And, this year there is an opportunity to win £200 just in time for Christmas! If you are travelling by car look out for the extra car park signs. There will be plenty of room on the old Ashfield works on Westgate, Sinclair/Craftsman Tools off Pool Road, and the old cattle Market by the bridge on Billam’s Hill. All will be lit and manned by stewards.
The Leeds- based charity ‘Save Babies Through Screening Foundation UK’ is hosting a Ladies Christmas Charity Event on Saturday 10th December at LA Fitness, Yeadon from 7pm. You are encouraged to dress up in your best Black, White and Bling for this special occasion, which includes a fashion show, pamper stalls, various Christmas craft and gift stalls and, of course, a brilliant raffle. Save Babies UK is a registered charity raising money for research into rare diseases in babies and young children. It is also encouraging the Government to extend the UK newborn screening programme. If rare diseases are detected at birth, then immediate treatment can be offered to prevent severe disability or death. The UK is lagging behind many other countries in terms of the number of diseases we screen for at birth. Tickets are £5 and can be obtained by calling 07921 611251.

Fast Drying Times, Fabric Protection, Spot, Stain & Odour Removal
This is an important first step in getting this scheme off the ground, however funding is a problem. Headingley and Hyde Park lack green space for children to play and the new park proposals would increase this, allowing young families a great place to play and exercise. I believe that it would also act as an incentive for families to move into the area. The park is currently an eyesore desperately in need of regeneration. We now have to raise the £100,000 needed to allow the proposals to go ahead. I have called a meeting of local residents and council officers to encourage them to work together to find this funding. It is great to see the community coming together over such a positive project. Headingley campus proposed for Leeds City College We learnt recently that Leeds City College wants to move from its current home in Burmantofts to Headingley Office Park. The college plans to move into its new home by September 2012. The planned new facility will have space for around 600 students aged 16 – 18. This is an interesting proposal, as we do need to bring the office park into full use and renovate the existing dilapidated set of buildings. However, I am concerned that the comings and goings of several hundred students may have an adverse impact on residents and add to parking problems in the area, which is already a big issue. Both Councillor Martin Hamilton and I have raised these concerns, which we feel must be addressed by the college if this plan is to be successful and accepted by the community.

•Digital tted is backed by Your local aerials qualifiedsupplied installers. & Allfiwork One of the things that makes Headingley a great place is its vibrant, diverse population. We all enjoy its attractions and long may this continue. Can you tell there is a ‘but’ coming? We all like to have a good time but sometimes this goes too far. So, let’s talk about noise. Specifically noise nuisance. This is a massive issue for the people of Headingley. It is an issue that the Council and I take very seriously. Leeds City Council operates a 24-hour noise nuisance service but, after talking to Headingley residents, I know the service isn’t operating as well as it should. People have difficulty getting through, sometimes it takes too long to get staff out to call locations or that they are unable to respond at all due to the volume of calls they receive. The result is unhappy residents. That’s why in October I worked a Saturday night shift with the team. It’s important that I know first-hand what the situation is like for residents and how the service responds to the issues they raise. The team responded to security calls, care calls to elderly residents and noise nuisance calls. What was clear from working that shift was the hard work, dedication and care that the staff put into their jobs. However, it was also clear that the service needed additional resources – including staff, vehicles and communications technology. Residents need a service they can rely on and staff need the tools to provide it. I am working with the Executive Board of the council to determine what improvements can be made.

One of the most remarkable bird events of the last ten years is the increase in the numbers of buzzards as a result of range expansion. Once mainly confined to western Britain, they have spread eastwards into almost every county and can be regularly seen throughout Yorkshire. Buzzards are a medium-sized, broad-winged, rather compact bird of prey, rich brown in colour. They are often seen soaring in wavering, rising circles, their wings held level or in a shallow V. Another characteristic sight is a bird perched on a fence post or telegraph pole watching for prey.

Not only does the buzzard breed on cliffs and in forests in the uplands, but increasingly in lowland woods with ready access to open farmland or marshes. Birds can be seen for example in Wharfedale and Washburndale and as close to Leeds as Harewood, where they co-exist with the larger red kites. Rabbits, dead or alive, are a staple diet, but they will eat other carrion and take small mammals and some birds as well as worms and beetles. During the winter, our permanent resident population is augmented by visitors from across the North Sea.

MASTER BANKERS IN WESTWOOD
The bankers moving into the new development in West Park in the 1900s, were small change compared to those who moved out to Weetwood in the 19th century. One of these, James Walker Oxley, lived just across the road from the villas of West Park in Spenfield house.
0113 2089787
The bank of Nicholson, Brown & Co. was formed two years before the Battle of Waterloo in 1813, later changing its name to the Union Bank. In 1848 it employed Henry Oxley, who rose to become a senior partner. In 1861 he was joined by his son, James, who became Head of the Bank and who commissioned Spenfield House, using the services of the renowned architect George Corson. The 1891 census records James as a ‘Master Banker’ living in Spenfield with his wife Margaret, son Henry and daughter Margaret, together with six servants. There were also two ‘visitors’ from the Hardwick family (more about them and James’ father who lived next door in Oxley Hall next month). By the 1911 census, James and his son Henry had both retired from banking, but still lived in Spenfield. Their professions were recorded as director of railways and director of steel works respectively. Similar to today, business life seem to have had its ups-anddowns. In the London Gazette of 1904 James was mentioned in a petition for the winding up of the Great Coolgardie Gold Mine Ltd. His address was given as Spenfield, Westwood, Leeds – an interesting description given Spenfield’s location on the edges of West Park and Weetwood. As for the Union bank, it merged with Lloyds in 1900, and as you know Lloyds is now part of …… hang on, don’t we own 43% of that bank? Doug Kemp www.westparkresidents.org.uk

THEY LIVED IN HEADINGLEY EDWARD GROOCOCK, GROCER
For almost the whole of the last century Groocock’s the Grocers was a feature of the row of shops along the west side of Otley Road in the heart of Headingley, its white awning marking its position (where Azendi is now). It finally closed in January 1990, the end of an era for this family business which had survived two world wars and a revolution in shopping habits. Edward Groocock, the founder of the Headingley shop, first came to Headingley in the 1890s, when he was in his twenties. He had been brought up in the grocery trade. His father Henry John Groocock had first come to Leeds from Leicestershire in 1864, one of the many incomers to this booming town on the look out for a good business opportunity – feeding the growing mass of the population seemed to offer a guaranteed ticket to success. He set up shop in George Street, in the centre of town just behind the newly-built Town Hall. He found a house in St Peter’s Square, and was able to afford a serving girl to help his wife – he was prospering. However a family tragedy struck and in 1872 he sold his business and became a commercial traveller in the provisions trade, often staying in lodgings. It is not clear what happened to his young son Edward, only two at the time. He was perhaps cared for by Henry’s younger brother Samuel Thomas, who had followed him to Leeds and opened his own grocery shop in Marsh Lane. Over the next twenty years he expanded and opened two more branches of Groocock’s grocery in town. His upward progress had its bumpy moments: in 1883 he was fined (along with several other grocers) with mixing ‘foreign fat’ into his butter – the adulteration of food 16 December 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
was an ongoing problem in the town. Maybe Edward began his working life in one of his uncle’s shops, but in his twenties he moved out of town to the rapidly-expanding, pleasant suburb of Headingley and took a job in a grocery shop which was already well established belonging to George Foster. The shop was in a prime position, with stables behind for the donkey and cart needed for the deliveries. When George Foster retired Edward bought the shop and set up as a high-class grocer, specialising in top-quality provisions and ‘fancy groceries, delicious teas and noted coffees’, as he proudly advertised. There was plenty of competition: the Co-op just a few doors away (where Oxfam is now - look out for the foundation stone at ground level and the date stone high above), and William Butler ‘The
Practical Grocer’ round the corner in North Lane, but he established an upmarket, quality image which attracted many of the residents of this wealthy suburb. In 1955, when he was 86, he was interviewed by the Leeds Evening News and recollected his early years in ‘the village’, when the horse trams were still running, his customers called in their carriages behind prancing pairs of horses, the maidservants came to order whole hams, and payment was made in guinea sovereigns. Edward Groocock retired in 1935 and the shop was taken over by his son Cyril and later by Cyril’s son, Alan. They went on living in the family home, on the corner of Kirkstall Lane and Headingley Mount. The shop retained much of its atmosphere - the original gleaming brass scales, the sides of bacon waiting to be sliced, the wicker baskets with samples of cereal and dried fruit in the window, the range of provisions from all over the world, the order boxes ready to be filled and delivered. Its reputation for friendly personal service and quality was maintained, while every effort was made to keep upto-date, but in 1990 there was noone ready to carry on the tradition and so it closed. The shop is still remembered locally with affection, and has even been celebrated by the poet Lucy Newlyn in her book ‘Ginnel’ (Oxford Poets, 2005) in a poem called ‘Comfortable Box’, where the delivery of the fat, ordered, carefully packed box from Groococks is seen as an essential element in her Headingley childhood. Few grocers’ shops can have received such poetic recognition!

GARDENROUND-UP ROUND-UP By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural
............................................... Keeping a gardening diary will help you keep track of what you have planted and when, which species did well and which failed sowing and planting dates. Note down flowering periods and other comments like this – they will all help you keep your garden in use year round. Now’s the time, when three pairs of leaves have developed, to pinch out autumn sown sweet peas. Take cuttings of perpetual flowering carnations under glass and root in a propagating unit with bottom heat. Keep checking chrysanthemum stools and dahlia tubers for any sign of rot or disease. Lift rhubarb crowns and chicory for forcing. Protect hostas and winter and Spring bedding plants by scattering slug pellets. Sow broad beans now if growing in mild areas, or under cloches in colder areas. Harvest Brussels sprouts, winter cabbage etc. and prune gooseberry and red currants if not already done. Inspect stored fruit, ripen pears at room temperature or add a banana to the bowl. If you have children in an after school gardening club, you can keep up their interest by sorting out a space for them in your garden at home. Not a dark, damp corner, but one which gets some sun. If it hasn’t been dug over before, cut into the turf, turn the sods grass to grass and pile in a corner to rot down. Dig the ground over well adding some compost and leave over winter. On wet days get them to choose what they want to grow – perhaps a mixture of vegetables and flowers. Next, give them a sheet of paper to plan out their plot. They may make mistakes – like placing tall plants in front, but it is all part of the learning curve. They may even surprise you and grow some excellent produce! If they are really interested a children’s gardening book will make a good Christmas present. Now’s the time too to order all your bulbs, plants and seeds for the Spring season. Have a wonderful Christmas

The horses and donkeys can be adopted from just £12.50 a year and for this donation supporters will help to feed and look after these animals, safe in the knowledge that none of this money is spent on admin, 100% goes towards the animals’ care. For each adoption the recipient will receive an adoption certificate, a photograph of their chosen horse or donkey, a history of the animal and the chance to visit 365 days a year. This could be the ideal Christmas or birthday present for animal lovers. Hope Pastures also runs ‘Pony Days’, where children can spend a day at the sanctuary caring for the ponies during school holidays – gift vouchers are now available. While they can’t help with the healthy eating or the credit card bill, there is a growing band of people who can quickly and effectively deal with the dreaded Self Assessment issue – Bookkeepers. Bookkeepers can offer sole traders and small companies a cost effective alternative to battling through financial management themselves, or going to the expense of engaging an accountant. Bookkeepers with the correct qualifications can not only undertake self assessment, but also payroll, VAT returns, general record keeping, cash flow forecasts, final accounts for sole traders and draft accounts for limited companies, partnerships, clubs and societies. With an hourly rate of between £20 and £30, a qualified bookkeeper can save you hundreds of pounds on your accountant’s bill – or, in the case of the sole trader, replace them entirely. If your affairs are straight forward, you could find that giving a bookkeeper

As daylight hours decrease, reset the timers to activate earlier in the day. In mid winter, houses with someone at home often have lights on in the early afternoon, so set your timers accordingly. It is also important to vary both the time of day that your lights come on, and the room you choose to illuminate, as this will make the lighting seem more realistic. An Audience with Alfred Wainwright Just over two years ago John Burland, founder of The Wainwright Society, was asked by Ilkley Literature Festival to present an evening about Alfred Wainwright, the famous Lake District guidebook writer. John spent three months writing an hour long, illustrated presentation in which he takes on the role of Arthur Wainwright and talks about his life – from his humble beginnings in Blackburn through to the writing of the wonderful pictorial guides that have now sold in excess of two million copies. The presentation ends with Wainwright’s death in 1991 and the formation 11 years later of the society that now bears his name.
Over the last two years, John has presented this talk to over 20 groups and organisations across the North of England and in the process has raised many thousands of pounds for various charities. He is now looking for bookings for 2012 and would be keen to hear from any groups who may be interested in meeting ‘Arthur Wainwright’. ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS.......IS BEAUTIFUL TEETH! In the 1950s, according to the hit novelty song at the time, the wish was just for ‘two front teeth’ – today you can wish for so much more and actually have it happen. These extremely thin veneers (0.3mm) require less preparation of the teeth and Chris uses a special technique in bonding the Componeer to the tooth surface, ensuring that there is almost no risk of the veneers coming off. FESTIVE FOOD With A Twist We all look forward to Christmas and all that lovely, traditional food. It’s a time to celebrate, wallow in nostalgia, reminisce, and EAT! Lovely as turkey and Christmas pudding is, don’t you sometimes just long for something a little different? We asked a few great little eateries around North Leeds for their take on festive food with a twist and they were kind enough to supply us with some interesting recipes.
Thai Sabai Apparently the words ‘Thai Sabai’ actually mean ‘a place to relax’ and that’s just what this little Thai restaurant on North Lane, Headingley is. The food, cooked by awardwinning chef Juree Barrett, is absolutely delicious and surprisingly reasonably priced. There is an extensive menu with lots of vegetarian options. They also cater for gluten free diets. Their suggestion to spice up your Christmas is this wonderful, spicy soup starter.

Ingredients available at most Chinese supermarkets Put the fish stock in a pan and add the lemon grass, lime leaves, galangal, fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, tom yum paste and half the chilli. Bring to the boil and cook for 1 minute. Turn off the heat and taste – if too spicy or sour add a little sugar, if too mild add chilli, add a pinch of salt or a little fish sauce if desired. Remove the galangal, lime leaves and lemon grass (optional). Bring back to the boil and add the prawns, mushrooms, spring onion, tomato and half of the coriander. Cook for 45 seconds to a minute and share into bowls. Sprinkle with the remaining coriander and serve immediately to prevent the prawns overcooking. For a vegetarian version (Tom Yum Hed) replace the prawns with a selection of mushrooms and the fish stock with vegetable stock. Serves four. Thai Sabai, North Lane, Headingley. The restaurant (Tuesday – Saturday from 6.30pm) serves up exciting dishes from around the world, like Spanakopita, Chimichanga, Tacos, blue cheese burgers and aubergine Involtini. Add two tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and stir in. Cut stilton into small cubes and stir into mixture. Season to taste. “I wanted to create a family show which would be equally popular with both children and adults”, said David Nixon. “Beauty and the Beast is a classic fairytale of good versus evil, exploring the concept of beauty on the inside and the outside. This is not an adaptation of the Disney version – it is based on the original tale and will embrace the darker elements of the tale as well as the lighter moments.”
LIDOS won several awards at the Wharfedale Theatre Festival for their Pantomime last year, including Best Pantomime and Best Principle Boy.

Choreographed by David Nixon, this new ballet is an exciting addition to the Company’s repertoire of family ballets. It rediscovers the enchanting and magical aspects of this traditional fairytale, exploring the values that lie at its heart – the battle between the forces of good and evil and power of true love.

From glam rock to punk rock, space hoppers to chopper bikes, Starsky and Hutch to Star Wars, the 1970s had it all. ‘Silver 70s’ is an exhibition at Leeds City Museum which recreates a home of the 1970s and looks at the decade through its popular culture. From the music of the Bay City Rollers, to the Iron Lady’s assent to power, the 1970s was a decade of local and national highs and lows. The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee and the nation covered their walls in paisley wallpaper.

CAROLS FOR A CHORAL FUTURE
Gala Christmas Carol Concert features a choir of 200 singing to secure the future of a choral tradition that has been at the heart of Leeds for nearly 200 years The Friends of the Music of Leeds Parish Church present a Gala Christmas Carol Concert, in aid of the Church’s Choral Foundation Appeal, at Leeds Parish Church at 7pm on Wednesday 14th December. A massed choir of 200 and Rothwell Temperance Band aim to raise the roof with the magical melodies of your favourite Christmas Carols.
“Carols for a Choral Future has a very special place in my heart – involving as it does the cream of Leeds’ choral talent and the men and women of the Rothwell Temperance”, said Dr Simon Lindley, Master of the Music at Leeds Parish Church. “Our boy choristers give readings and presentations and David Houlder presides with his customary consummate brilliance at the mighty Parish Church Organ – one of the finest in Europe. I have been conducting Christmas Concerts at the Parish Church for over thirty years, and the singing of our wonderful audience at Carols for a Choral Future is, simply, awesome!”
This unique concert, now in its seventh year, has become as integral to the Advent calendar at Leeds Parish Church as Christmas itself. Northern Ballet recently announced a new fundraising campaign to help fill the gap left by the 15% cut to its core funding for 2012 to 2015, announced in government funding cuts in March this year, and to ensure that the Company can retain its full complement of 40 dancers. Without this extra funding, the Company stands to lose up to a quarter of its dancers over the coming year. The Sponsor a Dancer campaign comes at the end of a highly successful year for Northern Ballet. February saw the world première of David Nixon’s Cleopatra at Leeds Grand Theatre. The production won widespread acclaim and went on to tour 11 theatres and make nearly £1.2m at the box office. Northern Ballet is uniquely prolific, regularly creating new full-length ballets. Since 2001, Artistic Director David Nixon has added 12 new titles to the Company’s repertoire – more new work than any other British ballet company. In order to continue to create and perform this work, Northern Ballet needs to retain all its dancers. The Sponsor a Dancer campaign invites you to sponsor a dancer of your choice. Sponsorship levels range from £30 – £10,000 per year and benefits include theatre seats, opportunities to see the dancer in rehearsal and meet them after performances, acknowledgement of support on the Northern Ballet website and invitations to special events. The Monument Trust and Garfield Weston Foundation have already funded three dancers for two years.
They have been joined by James Hare Limited who is supporting one of the Company’s young apprentice dancers. “We have had a very strong year artistically and our fundraising efforts have achieved a great deal, which reflects the belief in and passion for Northern Ballet”, said Mark Skipper, Northern Ballet’s Chief Executive. “Nonetheless, we are actively seeking support and continue to be proactive in supplementing our funding. We encourage anyone who is interested in our Sponsor a Dancer campaign to contact us. Our dancers are our greatest asset.” For full details visit www. northernballet.com/sponsoradancer or contact Jon Ingham, Director of Fundraising, on 0113 220 8000, jon.ingham@northernballet.com

ritten by Chumbawamba founder member and guitarist Boff Whalley, and following the band’s continuing ethos of self-reinvention, Big Society! A Music Hall Comedy is a brand new musical being staged by Red Ladder Theatre Company at The City Varieties from 18th January – 4th February. The show features the band performing twelve new songs, alongside comedian Phill Jupitus, who stars in the title role of George Lightfeather. This will be the fourth collaboration between Red Ladder Theatre Company and the band. Previous shows written for the company by Boff Whalley include Sex and Docks and Rock ‘N’ Roll and Riot, Rebellion & Bloody Insurrection.

of a music hall variety show. It’s 1910 and the cast is fighting for survival, threatened with shock/ horror disclosures by a corrupt and moralistic newspaper, ‘The Double Standard’. Trapped between an elitist, public-schooled government and a two-faced, mercenary press, the performers grapple to justify their existence and hold onto their jobs – that is, until Eve, escapologist and mistress to King Edward VII, decides to take things into her own hands.

humbawamba’s career spans nearly three decades, during which they have played punk rock, pop-influenced music, world and folk music. Their vocal anarchist politics exhibit an irreverent attitude toward authority, and the band has been consistently forthright in their stance on the evolving social issues of the day. With Big Society! they recreate Edwardian music hall’s singalong defiance and disapproval of authority
Phill Jupitus is the longest-serving member of the Never Mind The Buzzcocks team and regular panellist on QI (BBC 2). He launched the BBC’s digital radio channel 6 Music in 2002 and was the host of 6 Music’s breakfast show until 2007. He has recently performed as King Arthur in the UK tour of SPAMALOT, which finished its run earlier this month. Other acting credits include the role of Edna Turnblad in the West End production of Hairspray! and Nick Reed’s Lifecoach (Trafalgar Studios.) Phill also regularly appears on I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue (BBC Radio 4). Red Ladder is acknowledged as one of Britain’s leading national touring companies, producing high quality theatre contributing to social change and global justice. You’d be surprised how many authors there are around North Leeds! Not a month goes by that we don’t discover another. With Christmas approaching, we thought this might be a good time to draw your attention to some of them. From local history and architecture to winemaking, historical novels to gritty crime in LS6 and a story for all children who love animals and the stage – there’s something for everyone.

BEN’S ADVENTURES IN WINE MAKING CHARLOTTE’S CURTAIN CALL Ann Flint, who lives in Weetwood, published her first book this year .....30 years after she originally wrote it! It began life as a bedtime story for her twin daughters who loved theatre and had appeared in numerous plays. They had exhausted all the theatrical children’s books and were complaining. “Don’t worry”, said Ann rather rashly, “I’ll write you one!” And, so she did. It’s all about Charlotte, a sad, lonely girl who lives alone with her mother. She is friendless and bullied at school. Then Lindsay arrives – she’s pretty, popular and, to Charlotte’s amazement, becomes her friend and protector. She persuades Charlotte to join the local Children’s Theatre classes and Charlotte becomes hooked. It’s a lovely story of friendship, dreams and determination. Definitely a story for those who like acting and animals and dream of having both. Charlotte’s Curtain Call is available at Waterstones, Amazon and Philip Howard Books, Street Lane. 36 December 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
Ben Hardy is a practicing lawyer living, working and brewing in Leeds, and this is the tale of his attempts to create delicious, interesting wines from unlikely ingredients. He provides a set of instructions on how to, or how not to, make wine. Throughout the book he refers to local landmarks from a winemaker’s point of view – oranges from Leeds Market, berries from York Victorian Cemetery – taking us on a journey, in diary form, from picking his raw materials to drinking the final Local Books product.

You’ll learn quite a lot about Ben as you read about bottles that explode with alarming regularity, flavours never to be tried again, and journeys into the countryside armed with plastic bags and willing helpers. TIMES PAST AND CHRISTMAS PRESENTS!
Coming out shortly are two wonderful new publications. Building a Great Victorian City: Leeds Architects and Architecture 1790-1914, is the story of Leeds and its architecture in the 120 years before the First World War. It’s a celebration of the outstanding buildings that have given Leeds its unique character. The book presents the remarkable development, industrial growth on a heroic scale and a stunning array of new buildings, sufficiently grand to reflect the city’s achievements as well as its aspirations.

HISTORICAL FICTION FOR YOUR E-READER Chris Rae retired early from a career in IT to focus on writing historical fiction. He lives in Ilkley and to date has published three historical novels– two set in 15th century England, one set in 17th century Amsterdam – plus a collection of short stories, and is currently working on the second part of a novel about Richard III and the Princes in the Tower. “Like many budding authors I found out quickly that literary agents were not quite as enthusiastic about my work as I was”, Chris told us. “Although a couple did express some interest in my books and were kind enough to provide helpful advice and comments, it was clear that they felt my books just weren’t sufficiently commercial for them to take on. In the end I decided to publish myself, and after looking at several options I discovered that Amazon had developed a way for writers to publish their work as an e-book for the Kindle.”
The other is a book on the Leeds Waterfront, part of the Walkabout Series, which began in 2007 with Briggate: Yards and Arcades. It can be enjoyed as an account of the waterfront, past and present, or as an excellent guide to waterfront walks. One of Leeds Civic Trust’s major aims is the encouragement of high standards of design, architecture and town planning. But it also exists to stimulate public interest in and care for the beauty, history and character of the city. It organises visits to major new buildings throughout the year, hosts a series of lunchtime talks on the history of Leeds, and in summer there is a programme of guided walks exploring the history of the city, followed by a buffet supper.

The Leeds Civic Trust bookshop is the place to look for books on the history of Leeds – books of pictures, old maps, the history of particular buildings, of Leeds transport, and books on almost every district of the city. Most are surprisingly inexpensive, with many costing less than £5, and all have that special local appeal and would make excellent Christmas presents.

All Chris’s books – Mandeville: A Novel of the War of the Roses; G – Loyalty Binds Me: A Novel of King Richard III; and Johanna – are now available from Amazon. Has he made a fortune? “Not quite, but sales are rising steadily and I have learned a great deal about how to promote my books online. Publishing e-books is quick, easy and cheaper than traditional selfpublishing - finally I’m in control of my own destiny as a writer.” Having completed the journey of self publishing, Chris now offers a service to other local authors who find themselves in the same position and who would like some help with the technical aspects of an e-book project. THE LEEDS 6 TRILOGY BY JOHN LAKE
HOW LEEDS CHANGED THE WORLD By turns fascinating and mind boggling, Mick McCann’s encyclopaedia of Leeds is “a compendium of remarkable facts about Leeds”. Obviously a labour of love and exhaustively researched, the book is a fanatical celebration of our fair city and presents us with more obscure trivia than one could possibly hope for. It is also an intensely personal work, often revealing as much about the author as it does about the city it chronicles. McCann expounds on subjects close to his heart such as the fortunes of Leeds United, his vested interest in the city’s music scene, regional accents and a wealth of other obsessions and preoccupations. Does he digress? Does he ever! Many entries meander down tangential avenues until you’ve forgotten what the original point may have been and your head is spinning. This is more an observation than a criticism, McCann writes with wit and verve and his passion for his subject is palpable.

Eveleigh Bradford’s columns in our Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood and West Park edition of North Leeds Life are among our most popular features. Every month there are fascinating details about an individual who made his mark on Leeds. Up to now she has focused on people who have lived in Headingley, but in future she will be casting her net wider and taking in the whole of Leeds. Eveleigh’s fascinating history of the Headingley area, Headingley: This Pleasant Rural Village, is beautifully presented and full of interesting facts and people, period photographs and maps. It traces how Headingley grew in the 19C from a country village to a lively bustling centre.
One such character, Hamed the Iraqi mercenary, became a favourite with readers of Hot Knife. He should’ve been included in Blowback, but the genesis of the book precluded that. However he will be back in the third book, and taking a leading role. Meanwhile, the other main characters continue to play their parts in the evolving story of the north Leeds community.
“What I want to say in these books is that the under-wolves of society have lives too”, said John. “Their stories can be as compelling as the middleclass stories of much mainstream fiction. I’d like them to be recognised as stories about the good and the bad, gritty crime novels, but with a human heart, and a few laughs and horrors along the way.”

Blowback reunites the dodgy, foul-mouthed but likeable characters from the first book as they get mixed up in a plot that juggles stolen drugs, gun running and some nasty veterans of the Soviet-Afghan war. Drugs are everywhere behind the social life of the nation. Wars continue to break out, so military characters also feature throughout.

“Hot Knife contained everything I knew about Leeds 6, where I’d lived up to the mid-1990s”, said John at the recent launch party at LS6 Cafe. “I wanted to paint a picture of a much larger community, but on the advice of the agent I had at the time, a whole sub-plot was pulled out, it got stripped down to a grubby crime tale in a socialrealist setting and vernacular, and it worked! “After it came out, I had a meeting with a film company, but because they had Russian backing, they wanted a story with parts for Russian actors. I played around with recasting the story but soon realised I was writing a different book. I turned this into a sequel, Blowback, with a set of Ukrainian characters.”
Whether unearthing secret or forgotten history or singing the praises of overlooked local heroes, the wealth of information here is staggering. Occasionally tenuous, frequently daft but consistently enlightening, How Leeds Changed the World is a great book to dip in and out of, with each excursion into its pages guaranteed to yield another nugget of surprising info to reinforce one’s appreciation of the city we call home.

November saw the release of the new book from Armley Press. Blowback, a thriller by John Lake, is a sequel to his 2008 book Hot Knife.
OTHER LOCAL BOOKS Also available from North Leeds Life’s office are Val Crompton’s History of Adel which is packed with photographs, sketches and interesting facts about Adel; and Film History and Mystery at Ellerby Lane by Mary Milner, which looks back at the making of the film ‘Brought to Justice’, made by the children at Ellerby Lane School in 1953.

SOUND & VISION
We Need to Talk About Kevin is a powerful and deeply unsettling film which explores the age-old Nature versus Nurture debate in a disturbingly macabre context. Among the difficult and confounding ideas presented here are the complexities of the relationship between mothers and their sons and the uncomfortable notion that perhaps not all women are cut out for motherhood.
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN Directed by: Lynne Ramsay Starring: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller Cert: 15, 112 mins We are shown that, from the very start, Eva fails to form any kind of bond with her son. Even during the pregnancy, her trepidation about becoming a parent is apparent and shot through with sorrow and even anger at having to relinquish a life of independence and freedom she has known and loved. As a toddler, Kevin’s behavioral difficulties begin to take a sinister turn. Even in early childhood he exudes an air of malevolence. Eva’s attempts to establish a connection with her son are met with defiance and contempt, an affront made all the more galling by the developing bond between the boy and his father, in whose company Kevin is never anything but sweetness and light.
Lionel Shriver’s acclaimed 2003 bestselling novel has made it to the screen with a ringing endorsement from the author, masterful direction by Lynne Ramsay and an intensely affecting, possibly career-defining performance from Tilda Swinton. The film revolves around Eva (Swinton) a haunted and traumatized woman struggling to cope after her son (the Kevin of the title) has committed an atrocious act of violence. The precise nature of Kevin’s crime is communicated through a slow reveal, piece by piece until its full horror is made known. It transpires Kevin has orchestrated a Columbine-style school massacre. We follow Eva in the aftermath of the event and, through flashbacks, her desperate and agonizing attempts to make sense of what led to it. Her sense of guilt and responsibility is obviously crushing and the audience is as much at a loss as she as to whether Kevin is inherently evil or if some maternal misstep on her part resulted in the creation of a monster. 40 December 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
Director, Ramsay handles the troubling subject matter with an assured touch and scrupulous attention to detail, which culminate in the film’s gut-wrenching impact. She has also elicited the very best from her cast, notably Swinton, whose portrayal of Eva is a grimly captivating study of an emotionally drained woman, a hollowed out shell of a person trapped in a prison of memory from which there seems no escape. This is undoubtedly Swinton’s film but she is aided by able support from the solid and reliable John C. Reilly as her husband and a chilling, unnerving performance from newcomer Ezra Miller as the teenage Kevin. As befits the story, We Need to Talk About Kevin is a distinctly downbeat and heavy going affair, undeniably bleak but nonetheless implacably compelling. It may seem an unlikely one to recommend but a film as expertly made and with such lasting resonance is a rare thing and deserves to be seen and appreciated.

GIG REVIEW:
CHANTEL MCGREGOR FIBBERS, YORK. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14TH 2011. this is simply not what one expects from a petite, cherubic blonde all of 24 years of age. Having been stunned by McGregor’s guitar mastery, I looked forward to seeing her live. However, before setting out to her gig in York, I gave her debut album, Like No Other a listen and I must confess, I began to have my doubts.
Some of you may have read the piece about Chantel in last month’s magazine regarding her recently being named young British blues artist of the year. I should begin by addressing the prejudice (and some may say, sexism) in my initial assumptions about this gifted musician. Upon hearing about Chantel and her impressive accolades, I instinctively presumed her to be a vocalist, perhaps also a pianist. What I wasn’t prepared for, as I settled down to watch a live performance on You Tube, was a blistering rendition of Stormy Monday with Chantel unleashing some frankly frightening riffage on electric guitar. Trawling references to her on the web, I find I’m not the first to remark that
42 December 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
While there is some great playing on the album, some of the self penned material falls a little flat and fails to live up to the instrumental excellence on display. It could be the over-produced feel of the recording or the of MOR rock-pop direction, in which she seems to have been steered, being an uncomfortable fit, but whatever the case, my first impression of Like No Other was a little more filler than killer. Nevertheless, I entered Fibbers that night hoping to see Chantel bring her blues-rock magic to the stage. I was only halfways disappointed. McGregor is a captivating performer, a genuinely natural musician whose ease and fluency with her instrument is an awesome thing to behold. Clearly in her element playing in a blues-rock vein, Chantel channels such guitar heroes as Jeff Beck,
Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan and, especially Hendrix. Living up to these comparisons would be a tall order for anyone but, as her inclusion on a recent 100 Years of The Blues compilation testifies, she can hold her own among such blues heavyweights. In heavy rock parlance, the girl can shred! For all her consummate musicianship, though, I found the gig a mixed bag. While a competent singer, Chantel’s vocals can’t help but play second fiddle to her outstanding guitar skills and her confident axewielding only serves to highlight the shortcomings her songwriting. If Chantel wasn’t the youngest person in the room at the Fibbers gig, she certainly was the youngest on stage. Her backing band supported her well enough but seemed like a rent-a-rhythm-section line up, which almost undermined her stage presence due to a lack of a cohesive band presentation. Some of the highlights of the gig were when she performed solo, including an excellent performance of album track, I’m No Good For You. This may sound quibbling, but I would very much like to see Chantel McGregor find her niche with a group more her own age (perhaps a rocking, all-girl, Runaways-like band) where, relieved of the burden of being chief songwriter and frontwoman, she is able to concentrate on what she does best; ripping it up and flooring all within earshot with her coruscating guitar stylings. It’s early days yet for this blues virtuoso with talent to spare and it’s bound to be interesting to see where she takes it from here.

Minotaurs Celebrate Successful First Outing – Even Though They Lost!
Leeds Minotaurs, the Cookridge-based Aussie Rules team, recently faced two-times AFL North Grand Finalists Huddersfield Rams at their home ground, Lockwood Park. This was their first match since formation and after some quick introductions and the borrowing of a spare kit from the Rams, the Leeds Minotaurs were ready to rumble.

After an uneasy start they began to get their hands on the ball more and create more opportunities and Full Forward Rob Potts snagged a goal to

A few long goals from Keiran Holland put the Minotaurs ahead. However, in third quarter the Rams kicked six goals in comparison to the Minotaurs’ one. The long quarter, together with the Minotaurs’ lack of training, left the team with a five goal deficit to overcome in the final quarter.

Leeds narrowly won the last quarter with a second goal from Potts right at the end, but the home side held on for a 10.12.72 to 8.8.56 win. “After a successful debut (even though we lost!), the club is buzzing full of excitement and looking for more fixtures”, said player coach Rhyss Long. “We are currently in need of a major sponsor and a permanent home ground, which hopefully will be sorted very soon.”

Annabel Rose Trust Leeds Akkies RLFC and Leeds Rugby Foundation recently staged a hugely successful gala day of rugby league at Old Modernians, Cookridge, raising nearly £450 for the Annabelle Rose Trust.
Ben Wardleworth, Annabelle and Amelia with Akkies Masters captain Rob Potts and Sam Horner
Masters teams from the host club, Farnley Falcons, West Leeds Eagles and Ossett Trinity all took part in the Annabelle Rose Challenge, along with players from Wetherby Bulldogs, Milford Marlins and Blackpool Stanley. Each player donated a £5 match fee towards the trust fund, which was set up to provide six-year-old Annabelle, who was born with Quadriplegic Spastic Cerebral Palsy, with life-changing treatment to enable her to walk. The day began with a junior rugby league taster session conducted by Leeds Rugby Foundation Development Manager Sam Horner, and attended by local youngsters as well as members of the neighbouring North Leeds Leopards Junior Rugby League Club. Over 500 players and supporters were also treated to special visits by Ronnie the Rhino and the Engage Super League trophy. Annabelle’s proud dad, Akkies centre Ben Wardleworth, was overwhelmed by the support of all of his fellow masters players: “It was a great effort and a fabulous day. All the rugby lads have choked me a little as they are all somewhat of a ‘family’ and so willing to muck in for a good cause.” His enthusiasm was shared by Sam Horner, who added: “There’s a genuine camaraderie between Masters players in Leeds. It’s fantastic that our sport can bring people together in this way and it’s a credit to the host club for staging such a fantastic event.”
