NORTH LEEDS Life C O N N E C T I N G YO U TO T H E C O M M U N I T Y
Dear Readers, Well this year has been quite a rollercoaster and we have been distracted with financial crisis and uproar in the European Union. But Christmas has crept up on us and gives us all a chance to draw breath and get into the Christmas spirit – have fun, celebrate family and friends, and share a little with the many who may be bumping along the bottom right now. This month we invite you to ‘Put a Local Author in Your Stocking’! Leeds Writers seem to have been coming out of the woodwork recently and what better time to acquaint a few more people with their work? We also had a word with a few great little eateries around our area and asked them for a recipe that could be part of an alternative festive meal (in case you get sick of turkey and Christmas pudding!).

Hospital Campaign Issues Proposal for Wharfedale Forum Following significant concerns regarding the future of the hospital, the Support Wharfedale Hospital Campaign expressed concern that the Wharfedale Forum failed to act as the consultative body that it was set up to be. It acted more as an information service, providing local representatives and residents with information, once decisions had been made. As a result the Campaign has put forward a number of ideas as to how the Wharfedale Forum can ensure genuine consultation, accountability, an appropriate chair and membership, as well as ensure the whole community is kept informed and involved. “I hope this time Leeds Hospital Trust treat the new forum for Wharfedale Hospital seriously as a consultative body, not merely a medium to relay information”, said Charlie McEwan, 08 December 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
Coordinator of the Support Wharfedale Hospital Campaign. “The new forum must consult openly with the local community and I am optimistic that we will all be able to work together for the benefit of Wharfedale Hospital.” “The Wharfedale Forum started as a consultative body that acted as the key link between the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust, NHS Leeds and the local community. However it failed to do this. It pretended there was community consultation when there wasn’t and failed to fulfil its purpose”, explained Greg Mulholland MP and SWH Campaign founder. “The Support Wharfedale Hospital Campaign has put together a proposal for the forum, in which a number of issues, which were highlighted as problems with the forum, have been addressed.”
The Campaign is willing to participate in the Forum, provided it is set up in a way that allows the community to be kept informed and involved. It needs to involve genuine consultation, including holding open meetings and conducting surveys. “The Wharfedale Hospital is a fantastic community hospital” said Greg. “However, following a number of ward closures, significant concern has been raised about its future. The Wharfedale Forum must be seen to have credibility and to perform a genuinely important role. For this to happen it must be reformed and the Support Wharfedale Hospital Campaign believes its proposal is the way forward.” For more information and to read the full proposal, go to www.supportwharfedalehospital.co.uk

The morning is supported by the Community Alternative Team (CAT) who help people experiencing such difficulties or who may have mental health issues. An Audience with Alfred Wainwright Just over two years ago John Burland, founder of The Wainwright Society, was asked by Ilkley Literature Festival to present an evening about Alfred Wainwright, the famous Lake District guidebook writer.
Over the last two years, John has presented this talk to over 20 groups and organisations across the North of England and in the process has raised many thousands of pounds for various charities. He is now looking for bookings for 2012 and would be keen to hear from any groups who may be interested in meeting ‘Arthur Wainwright’. For more information contact John on 07725434036, email aneveningwith@wainwright.org.uk, or visit www.wainwright.org.uk
John spent three months writing an hour long, illustrated presentation in which he takes on the role of Arthur Wainwright and talks about his life – from his humble beginnings in Blackburn through to the writing of the wonderful pictorial guides that have now sold in excess of two million copies. The presentation ends with Wainwright’s death in 1991 and the formation 11 years later of the society that now bears his name.

Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon
One of the most remarkable bird events of the last ten years is the increase in the numbers of buzzards as a result of range expansion. Once mainly confined to western Britain, they have spread eastwards into almost every county and can be regularly seen throughout Yorkshire. Buzzards are a medium-sized, broadwinged, rather compact bird of prey, rich brown in colour. They are often seen soaring in wavering, rising circles, their wings held level or in a shallow V. Another characteristic sight is a bird perched on a fence post or telegraph pole watching for prey.
Not only does the buzzard breed on cliffs and in forests in the uplands, but increasingly in lowland woods with ready access to open farmland or marshes. Birds can be seen for example in Wharfedale and Washburndale and as close to Leeds as Harewood, where they co-exist with the larger red kites. Rabbits, dead or alive, are a staple diet, but they will eat other carrion and take small mammals and some birds as well as worms and beetles. During the winter, our permanent resident population is augmented by visitors from across the North Sea.
LIGHT IT UP WITH CASAC Reduce your risk of becoming a victim of burglary by lighting up your home when you are out. Leave a light on in a well-used room such as the lounge or bedroom rather than a hallway or other largely unused area. The idea is to create the impression that someone is in, which is a significant deterrent – so light up the areas that you are most likely to be using. Timer switches are a great way of turning on one or more lights when you are not in. As daylight hours decrease, reset the timers to activate earlier in the day. In mid winter, houses with someone at home often have lights on in the early afternoon, so set your timers accordingly. It is also important to vary both the time of day that your lights come on, and the room you choose to illuminate, as this will make the lighting seem more realistic. Use outside lighting at both the front and back of your house. Fit low energy dusk ‘til dawn type lights which come on automatically when it gets dark and go off when it gets light. These are both inexpensive to fit and economical to run. All wiring for outside lights should be sited out of reach. Burglars do not want to be caught and therefore do not want to be seen. Darkness allows them to feel comfortable and improvements in home lighting can make them feel exposed. Remember, it is the burglar’s impression that he or she can or might be seen that matters most, not whether someone is actually watching. If you have any further questions please contact: CASAC Burglary Reduction on 0845 519 2122, or mail@casac.org.uk

GARDENROUND-UP ROUND-UP By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural
............................................... Keeping a gardening diary will help you keep track of what you have planted and when, which species did well and which failed sowing and planting dates. Note down flowering periods and other comments like this – they will all help you keep your garden in use year round.
THE PERFECT PRESENT FOR ANIMAL LOVERS! Hope Pastures was set up in 1974 to rescue abused horses and donkeys. Along with providing a lovely environment where young people can learn about caring for horses in a natural setting, the sanctuary also runs an adoption scheme. Mr Pickwick
Now’s the time, when three pairs of leaves have developed, to pinch out autumn sown sweet peas. Take cuttings of perpetual flowering carnations under glass and root in a propagating unit with bottom heat. Keep checking chrysanthemum stools and dahlia tubers for any sign of rot or disease. Lift rhubarb crowns and chicory for forcing. Protect hostas and winter and Spring bedding plants by scattering slug pellets. Sow broad beans now if growing in mild areas, or under cloches in colder areas. Harvest Brussels sprouts, winter cabbage etc. and prune gooseberry and red currants if not already done. Inspect stored fruit, ripen pears at room temperature or add a banana to the bowl. If you have children in an after school gardening club, you can keep up their interest by sorting out a space for them in your garden at home. Not a dark, damp corner, but one which gets some sun. If it hasn’t been dug over before, cut into the turf, turn the sods grass to grass and pile in a corner to rot down. Dig the ground over well adding some compost and leave over winter. On wet days get them to choose what they want to grow – perhaps a mixture of vegetables and flowers. Next, give them a sheet of paper to plan out their plot. They may make mistakes – like placing tall plants in front, but it is all part of the learning curve. They may even surprise you and grow some excellent produce! If they are really interested a children’s gardening book will make a good Christmas present. Now’s the time too to order all your bulbs, plants and seeds for the Spring season. Have a wonderful Christmas
In the run up to winter, when food and bedding bills are the highest, Hope Pastures needs to increase the number of adoptions to raise much needed funds. The horses and donkeys can be adopted from just £12.50 a year and for this donation supporters will help to feed and look after these animals, safe in the knowledge that none of this money is spent on admin, 100% goes towards the animals’ care. For each adoption the recipient will receive an adoption certificate, a photograph of their chosen horse or donkey, a history of the animal and the chance to visit 365 days a year. This could be the ideal Christmas or birthday present for animal lovers. Hope Pastures also runs ‘Pony Days’, where children can spend a day at the sanctuary caring for the ponies during school holidays – gift vouchers are now available. Adoptions can be completed online at www.hopepastures. org, by dropping in to the sanctuary on Weetwood Lane, or by calling 0113 261 4344.
FESTIVE FOOD We all look forward to Christmas and all that lovely, traditional food. It’s a time to celebrate, wallow in nostalgia, reminisce, and EAT! Lovely as turkey and Christmas pudding is, don’t you sometimes just long for something a little different? We asked a few great little eateries around North Leeds for their take on festive food with a twist and they were kind enough to supply us with some interesting recipes.
Thai Sabai Apparently the words ‘Thai Sabai’ actually mean ‘a place to relax’ and that’s just what this little Thai restaurant on North Lane, Headingley is. The food, cooked by awardwinning chef Juree Barrett, is absolutely delicious and surprisingly reasonably priced. There is an extensive menu with lots of vegetarian options. They also cater for gluten free diets. Their suggestion to spice up your Christmas is this wonderful, spicy soup starter.
Tom Yum Gung Thai Hot and Sour Soup with Prawns 250g raw, headless, shell on prawns 26/30 size, peel off the shell but leave the tail on for presentation score along the back and remove the dark vein 100g button mushrooms quartered 1 bunch spring onion chopped 1 tomato cut into eight segments 4 sprigs coriander remove large stems and rough chop 1 litre fish stock 1 stick lemon grass chopped into large pieces 4 slices galangal root sliced thinly 2 kaffir lime leaves 2 tblsp fish sauce 2 tblsp fresh lime juice 1 tsp white sugar 1 tsp tom yum paste 2 small Thai chilli sliced very thinly 16 December | northleedslife.co.uk
Ingredients available at most Chinese supermarkets Put the fish stock in a pan and add the lemon grass, lime leaves, galangal, fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, tom yum paste and half the chilli. Bring to the boil and cook for 1 minute. Turn off the heat and taste – if too spicy or sour add a little sugar, if too mild add chilli, add a pinch of salt or a little fish sauce if desired. Remove the galangal, lime leaves and lemon grass (optional). Bring back to the boil and add the prawns, mushrooms, spring onion, tomato and half of the coriander. Cook for 45 seconds to a minute and share into bowls. Sprinkle with the remaining coriander and serve immediately to prevent the prawns overcooking. For a vegetarian version (Tom Yum Hed) replace the prawns with a selection of mushrooms and the fish stock with vegetable stock. Serves four. Thai Sabai, North Lane, Headingley. Open seven days a week, 5.30 – 10.30pm. 0113 275 8613, www.thaisabaileeds.co.uk

The Tea Room is open Saturday (11am – 4pm) and Sunday (11am – 5pm) and, as well as lovely lunches, there are fabulous desserts and puddings, including blueberry cheesecake, chocolate and beetroot fudge cake, pistachio and rosewater cake and bread and butter pudding. Red Ladder Theatre Company presents the world premiere of:
BIG SOCIETY! A MUSIC HALL COMEDY
W
ritten by Chumbawamba founder member and guitarist Boff Whalley, and following the band’s continuing ethos of self-reinvention, Big Society! A Music Hall Comedy is a brand new musical being staged by Red Ladder Theatre Company at The City Varieties from 18th January – 4th February. The show features the band performing twelve new songs, alongside comedian Phill Jupitus, who stars in the title role of George Lightfeather. This will be the fourth collaboration between Red Ladder Theatre Company and the band. Previous shows written for the company by Boff Whalley include Sex and Docks and Rock ‘N’ Roll and Riot, Rebellion & Bloody Insurrection.

of a music hall variety show. It’s 1910 and the cast is fighting for survival, threatened with shock/ horror disclosures by a corrupt and moralistic newspaper, ‘The Double Standard’. Trapped between an elitist, public-schooled government and a two-faced, mercenary press, the performers grapple to justify their existence and hold onto their jobs – that is, until Eve, escapologist and mistress to King Edward VII, decides to take things into her own hands.

humbawamba’s career spans nearly three decades, during which they have played punk rock, pop-influenced music, world and folk music. Their vocal anarchist politics exhibit an irreverent attitude toward authority, and the band has been consistently forthright in their stance on the evolving social issues of the day. With Big Society! they recreate Edwardian music hall’s singalong defiance and disapproval of authority
Phill Jupitus is the longest-serving member of the Never Mind The Buzzcocks team and regular panellist on QI (BBC 2). He launched the BBC’s digital radio channel 6 Music in 2002 and was the host of 6 Music’s breakfast show until 2007. He has recently performed as King Arthur in the UK tour of SPAMALOT, which finished its run earlier this month. Other acting credits include the role of Edna Turnblad in the West End production of Hairspray! and Nick Reed’s Lifecoach (Trafalgar Studios.) Phill also regularly appears on I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue (BBC Radio 4). Red Ladder is acknowledged as one of Britain’s leading national touring companies, producing high quality theatre contributing to social change and global justice. Audiences will be transported into an enchanting world of colour, inhabited by fairies, goblins and sprites, with a fabulous set
“I wanted to create a family show which would be equally popular with both children and adults”, said David Nixon. “Beauty and the Beast is a classic fairytale of good versus evil, exploring the concept of beauty on the inside and the outside. This is not an adaptation of the Disney version – it is based on the original tale and will embrace the darker elements of the tale as well as the lighter moments.”
LIDOS won several awards at the Wharfedale Theatre Festival for their Pantomime last year, including Best Pantomime and Best Principle Boy.

It rediscovers the enchanting and magical aspects of this traditional fairytale, exploring the values that lie at its heart – the battle between the forces of good and evil and power of true love.

BEN’S ADVENTURES IN WINE MAKING CHARLOTTE’S CURTAIN CALL Ann Flint, who lives in Weetwood, published her first book this year .....30 years after she originally wrote it! It began life as a bedtime story for her twin daughters who loved theatre and had appeared in numerous plays. They had exhausted all the theatrical children’s books and were complaining. “Don’t worry”, said Ann rather rashly, “I’ll write you one!” And, so she did. It’s all about Charlotte, a sad, lonely girl who lives alone with her mother. She is friendless and bullied at school. Then Lindsay arrives – she’s pretty, popular and, to Charlotte’s amazement, becomes her friend and protector. She persuades Charlotte to join the local Children’s Theatre classes and Charlotte becomes hooked. It’s a lovely story of friendship, dreams and determination. Definitely a story for those who like acting and animals and dream of having both. Charlotte’s Curtain Call is available at Waterstones, Amazon and Philip Howard Books, Street Lane. 22 December 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
Ben Hardy is a practicing lawyer living, working and brewing in Leeds, and this is the tale of his attempts to create delicious, interesting wines from unlikely ingredients. He provides a set of instructions on how to, or how not to, make wine. Throughout the book he refers to local landmarks from a winemaker’s point of view – oranges from Leeds Market, berries from York Victorian Cemetery – taking us on a journey, in diary form, from picking his raw materials to drinking the final Local Books product.

HISTORICAL FICTION FOR YOUR E-READER Chris Rae retired early from a career in IT to focus on writing historical fiction. He lives in Ilkley and to date has published three historical novels– two set in 15th century England, one set in 17th century Amsterdam – plus a collection of short stories, and is currently working on the second part of a novel about Richard III and the Princes in the Tower. “Like many budding authors I found out quickly that literary agents were not quite as enthusiastic about my work as I was”, Chris told us. “Although a couple did express some interest in my books and were kind enough to provide helpful advice and comments, it was clear that they felt my books just weren’t sufficiently commercial for them to take on. In the end I decided to publish myself, and after looking at several options I discovered that Amazon had developed a way for writers to publish their work as an e-book for the Kindle.”
The other is a book on the Leeds Waterfront, part of the Walkabout Series, which began in 2007 with Briggate: Yards and Arcades. It can be enjoyed as an account of the waterfront, past and present, or as an excellent guide to waterfront walks. One of Leeds Civic Trust’s major aims is the encouragement of high standards of design, architecture and town planning. But it also exists to stimulate public interest in and care for the beauty, history and character of the city. It organises visits to major new buildings throughout the year, hosts a series of lunchtime talks on the history of Leeds, and in summer there is a programme of guided walks exploring the history of the city, followed by a buffet supper.

The Leeds Civic Trust bookshop is the place to look for books on the history of Leeds – books of pictures, old maps, the history of particular buildings, of Leeds transport, and books on almost every district of the city. Most are surprisingly inexpensive, with many costing less than £5, and all have that special local appeal and would make excellent Christmas presents.

THE LEEDS 6 TRILOGY BY JOHN LAKE
HOW LEEDS CHANGED THE WORLD By turns fascinating and mind boggling, Mick McCann’s encyclopaedia of Leeds is “a compendium of remarkable facts about Leeds”. Obviously a labour of love and exhaustively researched, the book is a fanatical celebration of our fair city and presents us with more obscure trivia than one could possibly hope for. It is also an intensely personal work, often revealing as much about the author as it does about the city it chronicles. McCann expounds on subjects close to his heart such as the fortunes of Leeds United, his vested interest in the city’s music scene, regional accents and a wealth of other obsessions and preoccupations. Does he digress? Does he ever! Many entries meander down tangential avenues until you’ve forgotten what the original point may have been and your head is spinning. This is more an observation than a criticism, McCann writes with wit and verve and his passion for his subject is palpable.
“Hot Knife contained everything I knew about Leeds 6, where I’d lived up to the mid-1990s”, said John at the recent launch party at LS6 Cafe. “I wanted to paint a picture of a much larger community, but on the advice of the agent I had at the time, a whole sub-plot was pulled out, it got stripped down to a grubby crime tale in a socialrealist setting and vernacular, and it worked! “After it came out, I had a meeting with a film company, but because they had Russian backing, they wanted a story with parts for Russian actors. I played around with recasting the story but soon realised I was writing a different book. I turned this into a sequel, Blowback, with a set of Ukrainian characters.”

Eveleigh Bradford’s columns in our Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood and West Park edition of North Leeds Life are among our most popular features. Every month there are fascinating details about an individual who made his mark on Leeds. Up to now she has focused on people who have lived in Headingley, but in future she will be casting her net wider and taking in the whole of Leeds. Eveleigh’s fascinating history of the Headingley area, Headingley: This Pleasant Rural Village, is beautifully presented and full of interesting facts and people, period photographs and maps. It traces how Headingley grew in the 19C from a country village to a lively bustling centre.
Hot Knife and Blowback are available from Amazon, or they can be ordered through a bookshop.

One such character, Hamed the Iraqi mercenary, became a favourite with readers of Hot Knife. He should’ve been included in Blowback, but the genesis of the book precluded that. However he will be back in the third book, and taking a leading role. Meanwhile, the other main characters continue to play their parts in the evolving story of the north Leeds community.
“What I want to say in these books is that the under-wolves of society have lives too”, said John. “Their stories can be as compelling as the middleclass stories of much mainstream fiction. I’d like them to be recognised as stories about the good and the bad, gritty crime novels, but with a human heart, and a few laughs and horrors along the way.”

Blowback reunites the dodgy, foul-mouthed but likeable characters from the first book as they get mixed up in a plot that juggles stolen drugs, gun running and some nasty veterans of the Soviet-Afghan war. Drugs are everywhere behind the social life of the nation. Wars continue to break out, so military characters also feature throughout.

NORTHERN BALLET LAUNCHES ‘SPONSOR A DANCER’ CAMPAIGN
Northern Ballet recently announced a new fundraising campaign to help fill the gap left by the 15% cut to its core funding for 2012 to 2015, announced in government funding cuts in March this year, and to ensure that the Company can retain its full complement of 40 dancers. Without this extra funding, the Company stands to lose up to a quarter of its dancers over the coming year. The Sponsor a Dancer campaign comes at the end of a highly successful year for Northern Ballet. February saw the world première of David Nixon’s Cleopatra at Leeds Grand Theatre. The production won widespread acclaim and went on to tour 11 theatres and make nearly £1.2m at the box office. Martha Leebolt, who created the role of Cleopatra, won Outstanding Female Dancer (Classical) in the National Dance Awards 2010.
Northern Ballet is uniquely prolific, regularly creating new full-length ballets. Since 2001, Artistic Director David Nixon has added 12 new titles to the Company’s repertoire – more new work than any other British ballet company. In order to continue to create and perform this work, Northern Ballet needs to retain all its dancers. The Sponsor a Dancer campaign invites you to sponsor a dancer of your choice. Sponsorship levels range from £30 – £10,000 per year and benefits include theatre seats, opportunities to see the dancer in rehearsal and meet them after performances, acknowledgement of support on the Northern Ballet website and invitations to special events. The Monument Trust and Garfield Weston Foundation have already funded three dancers for two years.
They have been joined by James Hare Limited who is supporting one of the Company’s young apprentice dancers. “We have had a very strong year artistically and our fundraising efforts have achieved a great deal, which reflects the belief in and passion for Northern Ballet”, said Mark Skipper, Northern Ballet’s Chief Executive. “Nonetheless, we are actively seeking support and continue to be proactive in supplementing our funding. We encourage anyone who is interested in our Sponsor a Dancer campaign to contact us. Our dancers are our greatest asset.” For full details visit www. northernballet.com/sponsoradancer or contact Jon Ingham, Director of Fundraising, on 0113 220 8000, jon.ingham@northernballet.com

CAROLS FOR A CHORAL FUTURE
Gala Christmas Carol Concert features a choir of 200 singing to secure the future of a choral tradition that has been at the heart of Leeds for nearly 200 years The Friends of the Music of Leeds Parish Church present a Gala Christmas Carol Concert, in aid of the Church’s Choral Foundation Appeal, at Leeds Parish Church at 7pm on Wednesday 14th December. A massed choir of 200 and Rothwell Temperance Band aim to raise the roof with the magical melodies of your favourite Christmas Carols.
“Carols for a Choral Future has a very special place in my heart – involving as it does the cream of Leeds’ choral talent and the men and women of the Rothwell Temperance”, said Dr Simon Lindley, Master of the Music at Leeds Parish Church. “Our boy choristers give readings and presentations and David Houlder presides with his customary consummate brilliance at the mighty Parish Church Organ – one of the finest in Europe. I have been conducting Christmas Concerts at the Parish Church for over thirty years, and the singing of our wonderful audience at Carols for a Choral Future is, simply, awesome!”
This unique concert, now in its seventh year, has become as integral to the Advent calendar at Leeds Parish Church as Christmas itself. It is an excellent opportunity for all the family to hear exquisite singing from the combined choirs, as well as joining in with all your favourites. Tickets (£5) are available from: Ann Chadwick, Newlaithes Manor, Newlaithes Road, Horsforth LS18 4LG. (0113) 258 8446 and the City Box Office at The Carriageworks, Millennium Square (0113) 224 3801.
Silver 70s – Can You Contribute? Do you remember the decade that taste forgot? When the world changed from black and white to colour? From glam rock to punk rock, space hoppers to chopper bikes, Starsky and Hutch to Star Wars, the 1970s had it all. Now you can travel back to a time when high-waisted flares were fashionable, Leeds United were FA Cup winners, furniture was brown and prawn cocktail was the height of sophistication! ‘Silver 70s’ is an exhibition at Leeds City Museum which recreates a home of the 1970s and looks at the decade through its popular culture. From the music of the Bay City Rollers, to the Iron Lady’s assent to power, the 1970s was a decade of local and national highs and lows. The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee and the nation covered their walls in paisley wallpaper.
Nothing tells a story like a photograph and Leeds City Museum needs your family pictures from the 1970s! These pictures will be put on display in the ‘family portraits’ section of the exhibition. They only want pictures taken in the 1970s and they must contain at least one person. Please send any pictures of yourself or your family to: Silver 70s Family Portrait, Leeds City Museum, Cookridge Street, Leeds LS2 8BH. Or upload to www.flickr.com/groups/silver70s/ The Silver 70s exhibition opens on 27th January and runs until 22nd April 2012 at Leeds City Museum. Please ensure that you read the museum’s terms and conditions before submitting your images at www.leeds.gov.uk/silver70s
SOUND & VISION
We Need to Talk About Kevin is a powerful and deeply unsettling film which explores the age-old Nature versus Nurture debate in a disturbingly macabre context. Among the difficult and confounding ideas presented here are the complexities of the relationship between mothers and their sons and the uncomfortable notion that perhaps not all women are cut out for motherhood.
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN Directed by: Lynne Ramsay Starring: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller Cert: 15, 112 mins We are shown that, from the very start, Eva fails to form any kind of bond with her son. Even during the pregnancy, her trepidation about becoming a parent is apparent and shot through with sorrow and even anger at having to relinquish a life of independence and freedom she has known and loved. As a toddler, Kevin’s behavioral difficulties begin to take a sinister turn. Even in early childhood he exudes an air of malevolence. Eva’s attempts to establish a connection with her son are met with defiance and contempt, an affront made all the more galling by the developing bond between the boy and his father, in whose company Kevin is never anything but sweetness and light.
Lionel Shriver’s acclaimed 2003 bestselling novel has made it to the screen with a ringing endorsement from the author, masterful direction by Lynne Ramsay and an intensely affecting, possibly career-defining performance from Tilda Swinton. The film revolves around Eva (Swinton) a haunted and traumatized woman struggling to cope after her son (the Kevin of the title) has committed an atrocious act of violence. The precise nature of Kevin’s crime is communicated through a slow reveal, piece by piece until its full horror is made known. It transpires Kevin has orchestrated a Columbine-style school massacre. We follow Eva in the aftermath of the event and, through flashbacks, her desperate and agonizing attempts to make sense of what led to it. Her sense of guilt and responsibility is obviously crushing and the audience is as much at a loss as she as to whether Kevin is inherently evil or if some maternal misstep on her part resulted in the creation of a monster.
Director Ramsay handles the troubling subject matter with an assured touch and scrupulous attention to detail, which culminate in the film’s gut-wrenching impact. She has also elicited the very best from her cast, notably Swinton, whose portrayal of Eva is a grimly captivating study of an emotionally drained woman, a hollowed out shell of a person trapped in a prison of memory from which there seems no escape. This is undoubtedly Swinton’s film but she is aided by able support from the solid and reliable John C. Reilly as her husband and a chilling, unnerving performance from newcomer Ezra Miller as the teenage Kevin. As befits the story, We Need to Talk About Kevin is a distinctly downbeat and heavy going affair, undeniably bleak but nonetheless implacably compelling. It may seem an unlikely one to recommend but a film as expertly made and with such lasting resonance is a rare thing and deserves to be seen and appreciated. northleedslife.co.uk | December 2011 29

GIG REVIEW:
CHANTEL MCGREGOR FIBBERS, YORK. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14TH 2011. Trawling references to her on the web, I find I’m not the first to remark that this is simply not what one expects from a petite, cherubic blonde all of 24 years of age. Having been stunned by McGregor’s guitar mastery, I looked forward to seeing her live. However, before setting out to her gig in York, I gave her debut album, Like No Other a listen and I must confess, I began to have my doubts.
Some of you may have read the piece about Chantel in last month’s magazine regarding her recently being named young British blues artist of the year. I should begin by addressing the prejudice (and some may say, sexism) in my initial assumptions about this gifted musician. Upon hearing about Chantel and her impressive accolades, I instinctively presumed her to be a vocalist, perhaps also a pianist. What I wasn’t prepared for, as I settled down to watch a live performance on You Tube, was a blistering rendition of Stormy Monday with Chantel unleashing some frankly frightening riffage on electric guitar.

While there is some great playing on the album, some of the self penned material falls a little flat and fails to live up to the instrumental excellence on display. It could be the over-produced feel of the recording or the of MOR rock-pop direction, in which she seems to have been steered, being an uncomfortable fit, but whatever the case, my first impression of Like No Other was a little more filler than killer. Nevertheless, I entered Fibbers that night hoping to see Chantel bring her blues-rock magic to the stage. I was only halfways disappointed. McGregor is a captivating performer, a genuinely natural musician whose ease and fluency with her instrument is an awesome thing to behold.
Clearly in her element playing in a blues-rock vein, Chantel channels such guitar heroes as Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan and, especially Hendrix. Living up to these comparisons would be a tall order for anyone but, as her inclusion on a recent 100 Years of The Blues compilation testifies, she can hold her own among such blues heavyweights. In heavy rock parlance, the girl can shred! For all her consummate musicianship, though, I found the gig a mixed bag. While a competent singer, Chantel’s vocals can’t help but play second fiddle to her outstanding guitar skills and her confident axe-wielding only serves to highlight the shortcomings her songwriting. If Chantel wasn’t the youngest person in the room at the Fibbers gig, she certainly was the youngest on stage. Her backing band supported her well enough but seemed like a rent-a-rhythm-section line up, which almost undermined her stage presence due to a lack of a cohesive band presentation. Some of the highlights of the gig were when she performed solo, including an excellent performance of album track, I’m No Good For You. This may sound quibbling, but I would very much like to see Chantel McGregor find her niche with a group more her own age (perhaps a rocking, all-girl, Runaways-like band) where, relieved of the burden of being chief songwriter and frontwoman, she is able to concentrate on what she does best; ripping it up and flooring all within earshot with her coruscating guitar stylings. It’s early days yet for this blues virtuoso with talent to spare and it’s bound to be interesting to see where she takes it from here.
Seasonal Celebrations at Addingham Ceilidh Club Addingham Ceilidh Club will be marking the forthcoming seasonal festivities with a Christmas Ceilidh on Sunday 18th December in Addingham Memorial Hall. Resident Band Beneath the Clock will provide the music, with callers Liz Bowen and Jennie Ellison keeping everyone moving in the right direction.
Box comprise Chris Coe on hammer dulcimer, Steve Harrison on melodeon, mouth organ and banjo, Alice Jones on keyboards and Chris Partington on fiddle, plus Sue Coe as caller – a formidable line up! But you can expect more – like an Appalchian dance from Sue Coe and song or two from sound engineer Annie Dearman.
The popularity of the club, which usually meets the third Sunday of each month, has grown steadily over the past year, enjoying lively music matched to good dances from all over Britain and beyond.
Advance booking is essential for the New Year’s Day event. Tickets (£10/£8) available from Helen Brooks, Town End Barn 159A Main St., Addingham, Ilkley LS29 0LZ. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Addingham Ceilidh Club’ and please include an SAE with your order. Enquiries to Liz Bowen 01943 609393.
A particularly popular event is the New Year’s Day Ceilidh. This year the band Black Box will provide the evening’s dancing and music. Black
LADY MAISERY TO PERFORM AT ILKLEY MANOR HOUSE The new series of monthly concerts in Ilkey Manor House this winter opens with exciting new vocal trio, Lady Maisery, on Friday 13th January. The group features Hannah James, Hazel Askew and Rowan Rheingans – all of whom have notched up an amazing number of performance years honing their music and dance skills. Inspired by the folk singing traditions of the UK and northern Europe, Lady Maisery present songs and ballads both unaccompanied, as well as accompanying themselves on accordion, harp and fiddle demonstrating their talents as accomplished players. They are one of the first groups to revive the tradition of diddling or singing tunes still popular in Ireland and parts of Scandinavia. Be prepared to be enchanted by rich harmonies and sumptuous clashes. Lady Maisery has emerged as one of the most original groups on the UK folk scene in recent years. Much of their programme has its roots in traditional dance and you can look forward to some nifty clog dancing from Hannah James.
The Manor House concerts, which are organised by The Friends of the Manor House, usually take place on the 2nd Friday of the month in the upstairs
art gallery. Tickets for this concert are £10 adults, £6 for students in full time education and are available from Liz Bowen on 01943 609393.

ACHORD ARTS – FOSTERING MUSIC IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY Achord Arts is a new arts education service based in North Leeds. Its emphasis is on enhancing opportunities in the arts for local people. Building on the successful work of Chevin Music over the last five years, Achord Arts will initially focus on extending its music programme, but hopes to widen its artistic offering over the coming months.
The well-established Chevin Music Centre, which runs on Wednesday evenings at Bramhope Primary School, is now complemented by a second centre in Chapel Allerton. Chapel Allerton Music Centre is open Friday evenings at The School of Philosophy. Both centres offer individual and group lessons in a wide range of instruments – from the more traditional violin and clarinet, right through to electric guitar and drums. The various ensembles that rehearse at the centres provide a fantastic opportunity to make music with others, and cater for instrumentalists with just one year’s experience up to Grade 5+. Chevin Music Centre also hosts a community choir open to adults and children aged 14+. Achord Arts believes that everyone, regardless of age or background, should be able to enjoy music – it’s never too late to start learning. Most classes are open to both children and adults. Classes can be joined at any time during the year (subject to places being available). For more information, visit www.achordarts.com or contact Alison or David Major at info@achordarts.com / 07896 913 931.

Scouts and Guides Christmas Card Postal Service The Otley Parish Church Scouts and Guides Parents’ Association is running its annual Christmas Card delivery service for Otley again this year, and is hoping to exceed last year’s delivery of 10,000 cards! This is the 22nd year for the service, which will run from Saturday 26th November – Monday 19th December. Stamps (just 20p) and post boxes are located around the town in various retail outlets. The service is just for the town of Otley – no cards for Clifton, Askwith, Pool, Menston etc please! Also, please be sure not to post cards with Scout/Guide stamps in Royal Mail post boxes. “The Christmas post service is a real community event”, said Kevin Bumby, one of the scout leaders. “Lots of people help with sorting the cards and delivering them to homes. We redesigned the stamps last year, which was a great success, and we hope to encourage even more people to use the service this Christmas. With the cost of normal postage now above 36p per stamp, we offer a cost effective alternative.” Income from this service helps meet the running costs of the Scouts and Guides HQ on Burras Lane.
THOMAS SIGNS FOR MANCHESTER CITY St. Mary’s High School student Thomas Holland (14) recently signed for Manchester City FC. Thomas will spend two years in the Manchester City Academy before hoping to gain a full time scholarship. “Thomas has a tremendous opportunity at Manchester City”, said Assistant Headteacher, David Geldart. “He is under no illusion as to all the hard work that is required, both at school and on the training ground.”

The Messy Pumpkin carving challenge created some truly masterful scary faces, which lit the scouts sleeping area until the early hours.

St. Mary’s Visits Sicily A group of Year 11 and Sixth Form students recently took part in St. Mary’s annual exchange visit to Sicily. They enjoyed visits to Syracuse and Mount Etna (which had erupted the evening prior to their visit!), as well as immersing themselves in the language, culture and of course the food. The students also spent time in school with their Sicilian partners and gave a presentation on The Bambisanani Partnership – St. Mary’s partnership with Mnyakanya High School in South Africa.
St. Mary’s Turns Pink! To support Breast Cancer Awareness month, St. Mary’s sixth formers and staff were ‘tickled pink’!
