2020 has got off to a flying start! Already we are into February and festivals and celebrations are making their presence felt. Following a successful appearance last year, the Leeds LitFest is back with a great programme; Leeds Baroque is celebrating its 20th anniversary; and South Asian Artsuk’s LEAP festival focuses on the success of women in the arts, specifically from a South Asian perspective.

St Gemma’s Hospice’s annual sponsored dog walking event, Bark in the Park, takes place at Temple Newsam on Saturday 22nd February. You can choose from one, three or six-mile routes around the grounds. There will be refreshments, games and stalls to browse. Weather permitting, you will also be able to give agility a go and watch a Flyball demonstration by Springers Agility and Flyball Club, meet huskies with the Eight Below Husky Rescue charity, and get doggy first aid and advice from Holly House Vets. There will be a prize for the dog that raises the most sponsorship by 31st March 2020!

The Hospice provides expert care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses, caring for patients and their carers in the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit, through the St Gemma’s community team and via its day services, which include a Day Hospice and Out-Patient Department. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

VESTA VICTORIA (VICTORIA LAWRENCE) (1873 – 1951) ‘Queen of the Music Hall’ Victoria Lawrence first stepped on stage when she was four, billed as ‘Baby Victoria’, singing and dancing alongside her parents, both music hall performers. Her family roots were deeply embedded in Leeds working class life, but she was to find fame and fortune across the globe. Audiences in the raucous music halls of the day loved her saucy comic songs, delivered in teasing cockney style, with rousing choruses to join in with. She became an international vaudeville star, ‘England’s premier comedienne’, commanding a record salary when she came back to perform at the City Varieties. Like her best-known songs, her personal life was tinged with naughtiness and scandal, providing the newspapers with some titillating headlines!

She was born in Holbeck in 1873, the second child of Joseph Lawrence, working then as a mechanic, and Emma, a cloth weaver. Joseph had been brought up in the old, grim Holbeck workhouse, while Emma had worked in the flax mills since childhood. They married in 1870 when 20-year-old Emma was pregnant and found they could escape their wretched past and the daily grind by performing together, perhaps first in pubs and then at the new music halls springing up around Leeds. Joseph (‘Joe’) developed a comedy act which now seems bizarre but was hugely popular: blacking his face and singing upside-down, waving his legs like arms while a model head was fixed on top – billed as the ‘amazing double-headed electricfooted negro’! Emma took the name Marion Nelson and sang character songs. When pretty little Victoria arrived, they took her along as an added attraction. Constantly on tour, with little chance of schooling, she was destined for the stage. After graduating from ‘Baby’ to ‘Little Victoria’, at nineteen she took the name Vesta Victoria and went solo, while Joe moved into theatre management and Emma looked after the growing family, based in London now. This was the great era of music hall and

variety, theatres packed every night for two performances, changing every week, with prices from 3 pence. Victoria toured the country, always on the move. Her signature song was ‘Daddy wouldn’t buy me a bowwow’, written specially for her – it was an instant hit, sung and whistled everywhere. She made other songs her own too: ‘Waiting at the Church’, ‘Poor John’, ‘Our Lodger’s such a Nice Young Man’, relished for their sly innuendo. Small and vivacious, with a teasing deadpan delivery, she was adored by her audiences, who roared out the catchy choruses. From the 1890s onwards she regularly toured the vaudeville circuit in the USA and was a huge star there, winning rave reviews – and, she said, showers of love letters and jewellery! She topped the bill wherever she went and could demand big money - £50 a week. A spirited fighter for her rights, she won substantial damages from the powerful Moss Empire in 1914 over the terms of her contract.

Her personal life was less successful. In 1897 she married a theatrical manager, Frederick McAvoy – she was already expecting her first child. Six years later she divorced him for adultery and cruelty. In 1912, on tour in America, she married her manager, Herbert Terry, and had a second child, but it turned out that his wife was still alive, so the marriage was bigamous (a disconcerting echo of the punch-line from ‘Waiting at the Church’ – ‘Can’t get away to marry you today, My wife won’t let me!’). When Terry’s wife died in 1920 they married again, legally, but he left her a few years later, and she divorced him for desertion. The newspapers had a field day.

in Leeds at the Hippodrome, City Varieties and other halls, and figured in a couple of films and on the radio into the 1940s. She died in 1951 at her London home, still a wealthy woman. Alongside money and jewellery she left the old wicker basket that had always accompanied her on tour, and the originals of some of her famous songs, which found wry humour in the trials of ordinary people, especially women at the hands of men, reflecting the story of her own life – ‘It ain’t all honey and it ain’t all jam’!

She retired from the stage during her years with Terry, but after her divorce in 1926 staged a comeback, sometimes appearing with her brother Lawrence Barclay, a songwriter and actor. But tastes were changing and she was ageing. By the early ‘30s she was no longer top of the bill, though she appeared at the Royal Variety Performance at the Palladium in 1932, as one of the stars of ‘the good old days’. She still made occasional appearances

Life&Style Leeds in Your Lunch Hour The history of Leeds comes under the spotlight again from 5th – 26th February when Leeds historian, Dr Kevin Grady, presents his 13th annual series of free lunchtime lectures from 1.15 - 1.50 pm at Leeds Minster in Kirkgate, the new lecture venue this year.

Wednesday 26 February: ‘How Leeds Got its Daily Bread, 1086-2020’: Corn Mills, Bakehouses and Corn Exchanges – This fascinating story extends from Leeds’ medieval corn mill and bakehouse to the building of Leeds Corn Exchange and the Co-op’s People’s Flour Mill in Holbeck.

Wednesday 5 February: ‘Leeds Parish Church and Minster: Twelve Hundred Years of History’ – This lecture tells the fascinating story of how the small church with its Viking crosses at the heart of the original medieval settlement of Leeds became a massive parish church, and then the Minster we know today.

‘My lectures aim to tempt city centre workers and people with time to spare to pop into Leeds Minster at lunchtime to enjoy half an hour of the fascinating and entertaining history of Leeds”, said Dr Grady. “The lectures are free, and no booking is required. As in previous years, they will be full of surprises.

Wednesday 12 February: ‘The Wonder of his Age’: John Harrison, Leeds Benefactor (1579-1656) – This 17th century cloth merchant and benefactor is best remembered today for building St John’s Church, New Briggate and its almshouses, and re-endowing Leeds Grammar School. Wednesday 19 February: ‘Leeds’ First Town Hall’: The Moothall, Briggate (1600-1825) – For over two hundred years the centre of Briggate above Kirkgate was dominated by the Moothall and butchers’ shambles. Its remarkable history brings 17th century and Georgian Leeds to life.

“Three of this year’s lectures focus on some of Leeds’ most important surviving heritage buildings – Leeds Minster, St John’s, New Briggate, and the Corn Exchange, their predecessors, and the people involved in their creation. Ten Years of Leeds.

“Because of them, I was able to help organise ‘The Vote Before the Vote’, a 2018 exhibition at Leeds Libraries about the local Victorian women who helped with the cause of women’s suffrage. That’s my proudest achievement. And I had a play staged with a live quintet at Leeds Jazz Festival; utterly unexpected.”

Ten Years of Writing. 22 Crime Novels! In the Spring of 2010, a small publisher called Crème de la Crime put out a novel called ‘The Broken Token’. Set in Leeds in 1731, it marked the first appearance of Richard Nottingham, Constable of Leeds, and the crime fiction debut of long-time music journalist Chris Nickson. Fast forward a decade and Nickson is set to put out his 22nd book set in Leeds – ‘The Molten City’, which takes place in 1908. “When I look at these books lined up on the shelf, it seems crazy”, he admits. “I’m not even completely sure how it happened. I was just so eager to explore all these ideas and characters who’d been ﬂowing through my mind.” That’s taken him through seven acclaimed books with Richard Nottingham (actually Constable of Leeds in the 1730s) to Detective Superintendent Tom Harper, in charge of Millgarth police station at the turn of the 20th century, all the way to the 1950s and noir enquiry agent Dan Markham, as well as others. “The people are the heart of the books”, Nickson says. “But I try to make Leeds itself a character, the way it changes and grows over time. I was born and bred here, the place is in my soul. In the 1730s, it was compact, barely the size of today’s city centre. Around 7- 8,000 people lived here. In the 1950s, we had more than 500,000. Yet something ineffably Leeds still remains at the core.” Publishing the novels has opened the door to things Nickson had never anticipated.

Nickson’s newest book, ‘The Molten City’, the eighth to feature Det. Supt. Tom Harper, also builds on real Leeds history, using the 1908 Suffragette Riot as its backdrop. “Being able to use real events helps to ground the story. It’s the same with actual locations. Tom’s wife Annabelle is the landlady of the Victoria public house at the bottom of Roundhay Road. The place existed; my greatgrandfather was the landlord for 20 years. So, the novels connect not just to Leeds history, but my own family. My only regret is that my parents died before any of these books were published.”

Ten years is quite an anniversary. Yet Nickson feels he’s just beginning. “I’ve covered Leeds in every decade from the 1890s to the 1950s, as well as a couple of others. With Tom and Annabelle Harper, I’ve chronicled their lives from 1890 to 1908, and I want to take them up to 1918. Yes, I write crime novels, but for me, it’s always the people who make any book.” 2020 will bring two more Leeds books, as well as the reappearance in print of ‘The Broken Token’ - long available only as an ebook or audiobook.

Cabaret Returns to Leeds Grand Kander and Ebb’s landmark musical Cabaret returns to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 3rd - Saturday 7th March. Directed by Rufus Norris and produced by Bill Kenwright, it tells the story of a young American writer, Cliff Bradshaw, and his relationship with English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and features some of the most iconic songs in musical theatre, including ‘Money Makes the World Go Round’, ‘Two Ladies’, ‘Maybe This Time’ and ‘Cabaret’. John Partridge, well known to TV audiences as East Enders’ Christian Clarke, and one of West End theatre’s most prolific leading men, fronts this production as the enigmatic Emcee. Kara Lily Hayworth, best known for her critically acclaimed portrayal of Cilla Black in ‘Cilla the Musical’, will star as Sally Bowles, and the role of Fraulein Schneider will be played by singer and screen icon Anita Harris.

Since its Broadway premiere in 1966 and the movie starring Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey, ‘Cabaret’ has won a staggering number of stage and screen awards, including eight Oscars, seven BAFTAs and 13 Tonys. VERVE, the renowned postgraduate dance company of Northern School of Contemporary Dance, kicks off its 15-date international tour with a première at The Riley Theatre on 28th/29th February. VERVE is made up of 14 exceptional dancers trained at some of the world’s leading dance conservatoires, and this year includes dancers from Malaysia, Portugal, Norway and South Korea, as well as the UK, forming a truly international company. In 2020 the company will perform four physically ambitious, strikingly original dance works. When You Smile! Welcome to Smile Club! Red Ladder Theatre will present ‘Smile Club’, a powerful, dark comedy by Andrea Heaton and Adam Z Robinson, in the new Bramall Rock Void space at Leeds Playhouse from 5th – 7th March. Set in a dystopian world in which the government aims to tame unruly women deemed unable to ﬁt into society, Smile Club is a feminist dystopian thriller that is a darkly comic and searingly satirical one woman show performed by Andrea Heaton and directed by Red Ladder Theatre’s Rod Dixon. “The new studio is the perfect space for the show”, said Rod. “I guess you could say it's Red Ladder's first step into the world of science fiction, as the play explores a very plausible near-future when women become a little 'too outspoken for their own good' and have to be reconditioned in an institutional facility. It's a satire really, about the oppression of everyday sexism, but it's also very funny, and speaks very well to the times we live in.”

In it, Lisa, a Smile Club attendee, has been through it all and she now knows – beyond a shadow of a doubt – that nobody likes a girl who makes a fuss; nobody likes a girl who can’t take a joke. Life is simpler when you let things go. And she certainly has. Here, she presents the perks of being a Smile Club Member. LEAP 2020: Celebrating Women in the Arts Organised by South Asian Arts-uk (SAA-uk), LEAP 2020 is a festival dedicated to the experience and journey of women. It presents several events led by women, discussing their experiences, and aimed at inspiring the next generation to pursue success in the arts, whilst focusing specifically on the South Asian perspective.

The sound of shuttles will echo once again in Sunny Bank Mill, Farsley, as hand weaving is introduced through a series of courses in the new Twisting Gallery studios, part of the Weavers’ Yard development which sees the regeneration of the heart of the mill. Weaver Agnis Smallwood will run a series of workshops on refurbished looms, donated by Fabworks. The lovely old George Wood handlooms started life at Leeds University (in fact both William and John Gaunt, Sunny Bank’s joint managing directors learnt to weave on them!). Participants can learn the basics of weaving in a day or take a longer course. Some of the looms will be available to rent for short periods for those who become addicted! “Weaving is our legacy and a huge part of the story of our community”, said Jane Kay, Arts Director. “We are delighted to both share that history and provide a means of keeping it alive by introducing courses in this ancient craft.”

Phoenix Dance Theatre recently commissioned choreographer Jamaal Burkmar and composer Christella Litras to create a new work, following their engagement with Phoenix’s 2019 Choreographers and Composers Lab last July, which brought together 24 artists for a two-week intensive led by Sharon Watson, Artistic Director, and Music Director Alexander Campkin. Funded by Jerwood Arts with match funding from Leeds Dance Partnership, The Lab focused on cross-artform collaboration, supporting four choreographers, four composers, four musicians and 12 dancers. “This commission reaffirms why intensives like the CC Lab are so important for the industry, as it allows artists to take risks and collaborate and as a result, create something new and exciting which challenges their creative practice”, said Sharon. Jamaal and Christella will produce a number of contemporary dance pieces set to original music, which will work together as a full-length performance or as standalone pieces.

Leeds Baroque Celebrates 20th Anniversary Leeds Baroque has been performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries since its foundation in 2000. Made up of professional, student and talented amateur performers, it is directed by Prof Peter Holman, an international authority on this repertoire. To celebrate its 20th anniversary Leeds Baroque will be taking performances to Leyburn in North Yorkshire and to the National Centre for Early Music in York. Sunday 8th March: The season begins with ‘Music for Great Occasions’, 3pm on the Clothworkers’ Centenary Concert Hall, University of Leeds, featuring the music of Purcell and Handel with Finn Lacey (counter tenor), Dan Auchincloss (tenor), Philip Smith (baritone) and renowned trumpet player Crispian Steele Perkins. Leeds Lit Fest is back! Leeds Lit Fest returns from Wednesday 4th – Sunday 8th March, promising to be unlike any other literature festival in the UK. LLA Cultural & Social Visits Project Receives Funding

‘The Monster Panto’ The award-winning amateur theatre group STARS presents ‘The Monster Panto’ at Adel & Ireland Wood Community Centre, New Adel Lane, LS16 6AZ from Thursday 20th to Sunday the 23rd February. This annual pantomime extravaganza includes all the usual (and unusual!) panto antics and also features the group’s youth section, Starburst.

Through the National Lottery and Leeds Community Foundation, Little London Arts (LLA) has received the funding to continue its Cultural & Social Visits project for people over 50.

When minibus transport is provided, there is a choice of pick up points in Little London and the city centre. The cost is on a pay-what-you-can basis, so no one is financially excluded.

The programme of day trips was set up to help combat social isolation whilst offering older people opportunities to access a wide range of experiences to suit diverse backgrounds and interests. Starting in the inner-city Little London area, the trips are now open to anyone over 50 across Leeds. They include visits to places like museums, art galleries, nature reserves, country parks etc. Many are linked to cultural, environmental, scientific or heritage interests in Leeds and Yorkshire, often with a specially arranged group tour, talk or walk. They take place all year round, and this coming Summer will explore places further afield.

The project also receives support from the National Lottery Community Fund, Leeds Fund Small Grants, and Time to Shine Seasonal Loneliness fund. ‘The Monster Panto’ is written by members of STARS and follows the hilarious adventures of Dame Dilly and her schoolgirls to Transylvania where she is confronted by vampires, bats, werewolves, and haunted rooms – not to mention Frank N Stein, Professor Crackpot and a host of other characters. You are invited to go along and follow their journey - cheer the heroines and boo the villains (or vice versa!). Performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday start at 7:30pm. HELP - English Teachers Wanted! HELP (Harehills English Language Project), a charity working with immigrants, refugees, and anyone who wants to better their English, runs free classes (from Beginners to Advanced) during term time. It is currently planning to expand its service and introduce evening classes in addition to their established day-time sessions and is looking for qualified, volunteer teachers for both evening (Mondays 6 – 7.30pm) and day-time classes. “We have had numerous enquiries from working people who want to develop their English language skills in order to progress in their jobs”, said Nick Thomas, HELP Project Leader. “The obvious way to cater for them is to hold some classes in the evening. “We have had interest from a wide range of people, including people wanting to become taxi drivers. In order to take the licensing authority’s formal literacy and numeracy test, they have to show they have reached a certain level and we can help them reach this point. Any adult who wants to improve their English is welcome. We even have a day time crèche, where parents can leave their pre-school children while they attend classes.”

The classes are also a great opportunity to meet other people and make friends. This is especially helpful for women who might otherwise meet few people outside the home. In the higher classes, people also learn about the history and culture of the UK – touching on subjects like Halloween, Bonfire Night, Armistice Day, Pancake Day, and a session on Yorkshire English is usually helpful and appreciated! HELP would like to hear from teachers who can commit to at least one evening or one morning during term times. HELP is based at St Aidan’s and Trinity United Churches in Harehills.

Roundhay Park Gets its First 24Hour Deﬁbrillator

Osteoporosis Research Development Have you suffered a broken bone due to osteoporosis? Would you like to help develop a Leeds University research study? If so, they would like to hear from you!

Community and local sports groups recently banded together to purchase Roundhay Park’s first 24-hour defibrillator – which could play an essential part in saving the life of someone who’s in cardiac arrest. A couple of years ago Roundhay parkrun became aware of the potential benefits of having a defibrillator available at parkruns. Funds were raised to buy a portable device, but whilst this was available for an hour on Saturday and Sunday mornings during parkrun it stayed at someone’s house for the rest of the time. “We soon realised we needed a defibrillator situated permanently in the park”, said John Hussey, from Friends of Roundhay Park and a parkrun runner. “So, we launched a campaign to get one. The Park Management was incredibly supportive and several locations were investigated. It wasn’t long before other

sporting groups who use the park joined us and it became a real community driven campaign. The final result is a bright yellow box containing the defibrillator mounted on the railings in front of Lakeside Cafe. It may just help to save someone’s life.” Should you ever need to use it, dial 999, ask for ambulance service, explain the situation and you will be given the code to open the box. All the instructions are there. Once the unit is in operation it will guide you through the process as it is fully automatic. A research team from the School of Healthcare, University of Leeds, is inviting people aged 50+ with osteoporosis to join them for a group discussion on living with osteoporosis following a broken bone. They want to hear about your experiences of living with osteoporosis; discover what is important to you; and hear your views on the help and support provided in Leeds. This event will be held on 10th February 2020 at the University of Leeds. Travel expenses will be reimbursed and token payment offered for attending. Opportunity for attendance is on a first come first served basis. The new junction at the Outer Ring Road/ A61 Stonegate Road has been open for a number of weeks and I’ve had a lot of feedback about it. This has been mostly positive, especially now that most of us are getting used to it and the traﬃc light timings are being improved. I’d really like to know your thoughts. Is it better, worse, or is there no discernible difference? As I often say, for every silver lining, there is a cloud. The major junction works are now complete – however the landscaping will be carried out between 27th January and 7th February. The main impact of this will be the (temporary return) of the traﬃc management and single lanes between 9am and 3pm. I am assured, that it will be completed as quickly as possible and the

I have also been asked about what is happening with the works at the King Lane/ Outer Ring Road and Stonegate Road Junctions. Originally, the plan was for the major works here to immediately follow the completion of works at the A61 junction. We have been chasing details of when this work might be carried out, for now it seems to have been delayed. As soon as there is any information to share, we will let you know here. Last year Leeds City Council approved the Housing Allocation Strategy for the whole city – a plan to determine where houses will be built in the coming 15 years – every council has to have one. In Alwoodley just one site, at the Harrogate Road end of Alwoodley Lane, was finally identified for potential development of housing and a new school. Alwoodley Parish Council, was aware that this land would, very likely, be coming forward for housing and ensured the Alwoodley Neighbourhood Plan (a

legally binding plan that influences what developments can take place within the Alwoodley Parish) made specific provision and reference to this site and what can and should be built there. Proposals for this part of our ward are likely to be coming in the next few months. As Spring bulbs begin to emerge and the days become longer, the urge to do some gardening is irresistible. Soil and Compost

Sweet Peas

At this time of the year soil is cold and wet and it is easily compacted so it’s better to keep off it until the weather improves or use wooden boards to help distribute your weight. For now, adding a layer of mulch such as homemade compost or fallen leaves will protect bare soil until the growing season begins.

An early sowing will give your sweet peas a head start. Sow them into good potting compost, putting one seed to a 9cm pot or six to a 15cm pot. Better still, you can re-use cardboard loo roll middles by standing them in a tray and filling them with compost before sowing one seed in each and these will give your seedlings plenty of space for their roots and can be planted out in their entirety when the time comes – which means less risk of root damage. Place the pots/tubes in a cold frame or greenhouse, covered with a sheet of newspaper which you can remove once they germinate. If hard frosts are forecast, they may need a little extra protection in the form of newspaper of horticultural fleece. Once the seedling has formed four leaves, pinch out the tip and the top two leaves so that your little seedlings will develop into nice bushy plants.

Making compost is really easy, in my small garden I have two simple wooden compost bins side by side, one contains compost that is ready to use, the other is gradually filled throughout the year with layers of material from the garden, vegetable peelings from the kitchen and grass cuttings. In early Spring I empty the first bin and spread it onto the veg and flower beds, then I turn the compost in the other bin and leave it to mature whilst I start filling the first bin again. It is ready when it looks like dark crumbly soil.

The Kingfisher is perhaps one of the most recognisable British birds, and also one of the most colourful, and exciting to spot. Its cheeks and underparts are bright orange and its head and back are an electric blue colour. It is a small sparrow-sized bird with a large head in proportion to its body, and a long, dagger-like bill.

The male has an all-black bill, the female has a reddish base to its bill. It is mostly seen near water, along slow-moving rivers and canals and beside lakes, either perching motionless as it watches for prey, or speeding past, in a bright blue blur, low over the water, uttering its shrill call. They eat mainly small fish such as minnows and sticklebacks, but also aquatic insects, and have to catch and eat their own body weight in fish every day to survive. They nest in burrows in the sandy banks of streams, which they excavate themselves. Kingfishers do not live very long â&#x20AC;&#x201C; only a quarter of birds survive from one breeding season to the next, and, in periods of severe winter weather, many can die from cold or lack of food. It is a widespread bird, and around Leeds it can (with a bit of luck!) be seen at RSPB Fairburn Ings

Hyde Park Picture House Takes to the Road!

Thanks to a Heritage Lottery grant, Hyde Park Picture House is about to undergo major refurbishment and development from the end of February – but don’t despair, to ensure you get your film fix HPPH is taking its programme ‘On the Road’. From March, you’ll be able to catch its ‘New Indies’ series at Leeds University Union, starting with ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ (part of LGBTQ History Month) on 15th March. Of course, screenings are open to everyone, not just students. ‘Hyde & Seek’, its family friendly programme, will take place on the fourth Saturday of every month at HEART on Bennett Road in Headingley and all screenings will be ‘Pay What You Feel’. Plus, there will be a fun craft activity before the film. ‘Creatures of the Night’ continues at its temporary home, The Brunswick on North Street, every other Wednesday, showing the best in new horror as well as obscure cult classics. ‘Docs & Artists’ Moving Image’, the focus of its Tuesday Wonder screenings, will

‘Music on Film’, a brand new monthly feature, run in partnership with, and held at, The Brudenell Social Club, will screen music documentaries and concert films. And, ‘Memory Matinees’, designed for people with dementia, will also be held at Headingley HEART. Hyde Park Picture House first opened in 1914 and is the UK’s last remaining gas-lit cinema (and yes, the gas lights will remain!). It is fantastic that it will now be able to continue to welcome film fans for a further 100 years. The Grade II listed building will undergo essential repairs and restoration work, alongside the creation of new accessible facilities, including a larger foyer space and a second screen in the basement. In addition to the Heritage Lottery grant, backing has been received from Leeds City Council, the Garfield Weston Foundation, Film Hub North, Leeds Inspired, the

Pilgrim Trust, Gwyneth Forrester Trust, and Co-op Community Fund. Kirkstall Brewery is also supporting the project, and plans to brew a Picture House Ale, with 20% of sales going towards the work. More exciting news is that Francis Lee, the BAFTA-nominated writer and director of the film ‘God’s Own Country’, is to become the Picture House’s first Patron. An avid supporter of the cinema, he is currently working on his new film ‘Ammonite’ starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, due out later this year. Despite the wonderful support the Picture House has already received, it still needs to raise more money to complete the project. It will be embarking on a crowdfunding campaign this Spring. With your hatred, you will take my life, and you will ascend...”

This Winter, cinema’s most profitable film series concludes in episode nine of the 'Star Wars' saga. 'The Rise of Skywalker' is Disney’s third instalment in the recentlyrevived franchise, and bravely attempts to wrap up (and bring reason to) the convoluted disaster of its last episode. The result is a final chapter trying to start over again, whilst delivering all the big payoffs expected in a third act. Perhaps that’s why this overcrowded, hurried mess of a movie never really has the chance to unpack any interesting ideas. It’s too busy resetting a whole new barrage of payoffs. In 'Star Wars' tradition, a crawling caption debriefs us on the mysterious return of Emperor Palpatine. The goodies in The Resistance attempt to sniff out the old enemy, whilst the baddies in the Frist Order, including upstart Kylo Ren, feel equally threatened by the leader’s return. The chase is on to discover the ancient villain’s hideout, bringing two Jedi together in a final battle against the dark side of the force... Whilst this all seems simple enough, J.J. Abrams’ frantic direction prioritises a manic, impatient race to the finish line that barely draws breath. After two films, you’d expect some pause for development, reflection or character study, but there’s no reprieve: the film plays out like a showreel of set pieces and action with increasingly numbing effect. Added to the mix is a sprawling ensemble of forgettable new characters afforded no time to develop before they're shunted aside for the next big effects sequence. The heavily marketed and smartly dressed Zorii Bliss, for example, hands over a few lines with zero impact; cut her two scenes and the plot remains the same. But perhaps her pleasing design makes for a nice and shiny new toy in the merchandise line?

As the film winds on, dragging us through a journey of hide and seek with gadgets and maps and battles and flashbacks, it becomes apparent that 'The Rise of Skywalker' isn’t really serving any story; it's executing a boardroom of set pieces sketched on Post-It notes by committee, rearranged into something resembling a movie treatment. Perhaps the 'Star Wars' movie machine is simply running out of ideas. The telltale sign of desperation shows in its plundering of old iconography to remind audiences that this is still the 'Star Wars' brand we know and love, yet it feels more tired than nostalgic. Remember Luke Skywalker? Tick. The Millennium Falcon? Tick. Old Hans Solo? Yup, he’s back too. C3PO? Yawn. Mostly notably, Ian McDiarmid returns as the arch Emperor, and actually hands over an entertaining if knowingly operatic performance. It’s momentarily fun, but the pantomime campery soon feels like yet another theatrical walkdown, another encore, to a story that came to a natural conclusion 35 years ago. You’re left wondering why this tale is being told again, for the third time. Still, the film is salvaged by some robust performances. Adam Driver continues to deliver the most absorbing character in the series as the tragically unhinged Kylo Ren. Daisy Ridley also photographs nicely as heroine Ray, showcasing some impressive swordsmanship. Domhnall Gleeson and Richard E. Grant offer some playful cameos too, though with less dialogue than your average Storm Trooper.

Beautiful production design combined with John Williams' soaring score helps smooth over and add weight to the action, spotting emotion where there’s often empty space. There's also some inspired puppetry and sound design, giving the whole thing a tactile and nostalgic Eighties’ flavour. But there's no escaping the reality that this big-budget film is a one-shot and disposable funfair ride. There’s plenty of distracting effects, noise, action and movement, but behind all the colourful fanfare there’s little to remember, and nothing to revisit. Essentially, this is probably not the finale you’re looking for.

Support Scheme Osteoarthritis The Study of Supportive Care in Osteoarthritis has been running since 2017. Throughout the last year, a successful research collaboration between the School of Healthcare (University of Leeds) and people with hip/ knee osteoarthritis, saw the research team and a group of trained volunteers working together to support and improve selfmanagement of older people with osteoarthritis. In the study, older people with osteoarthritis were trained to become peer mentors; developed the skills and confidence to selfmanage their condition; mentors and participants became better informed about osteoarthritis and were encouraged to exercise safely and regularly.

Leeds City Council has granted planning permission for a new mental health inpatient unit for young people in West Yorkshire.

Leeds Caring Hands Sets Up Digital Skills Club Leeds Caring Hands, a charity set up by North Leeds Medical Practice’s Patient Participation Group (PPG), recently received a grant from The Halifax’s Yorkshire and the Humber Community Fund to purchase iPads, accessories and Wi-Fi equipment to set up a Digital Skills Club for elderly residents. Created to address the growing social isolation amongst elderly and disabled patients, Leeds Caring Hands runs a bi-weekly activities group at the practice’s premises, in Moortown. The group is for all the practice’s patients and there are plans to extend it to other practices. It’s a chance for older patients to meet and befriend new people in a supportive environment. They can chat, play games, table tennis or pool, or help with a jigsaw, over a cuppa. The group is supported by volunteers

who make sure that patients are welcomed and get involved in activities.
