NORTH LEEDS LIFE MAGAZINE | CONTENTS

SIT BACK & LET US TAKE YOU THERE

NOVEMBER 2010 Dear Readers It’s November already! Christmas is fast approaching and the magazine is teeming with Christmas fairs and coffee mornings. We take a look at gift giving, with emphasis on the more unusual – seek out little individual shops, local markets like Artsmix, and Farmers’ Markets. A particularly novel gift idea this year is a hen house! Big news this month is the 24th Leeds International Film Festival and you could win a pair of tickets to a film of your choice – but hurry, the competition closes at midnight on 5th November! Cover: Colin Firth & Helena Bonham-Carter in The King’s Speech.

Plus, the Leeds Jewish community stages an exhibition at Leeds City Museum; The National Theatre bring Alan Bennett back to Leeds; Jacob’s Larder considers soups; Bangs and a Bun completes her first half marathon; and The Leeds Gathering – the annual festival of Irish culture and music is poised to take the city by storm. The deadline for our December issue is around 1st November, and for January it’s 1st December. Keep your news rolling in – you know how we love to hear from you!

HEADINGLEY’S NATURAL FOOD STORE IS THREE! 06

The Natural Food Store on North Lane in Headingley is celebrating three years as a community- owned co-operative.

MANAGING DIRECTOR Jack Campbell info@northleedslife.co.uk

Customers and the community took over the running of the shop in November 2007 and the shop has continued to thrive through all the ups and downs of the recent economic changes.

IAN IS BAKING UP A STORM IN HEADINGLEY! Ian Gaunt’s new bakery on North Lane is a welcome addition to the centre of Headingley. A baker for over 30 years, Ian has built a reputation for himself as a baker of distinction. When Anthony Flynn opened his Piazza in the Corn Exchange, the top chef sought him out to be in charge of bread and Observer restaurant critic, Jay Rayner, proclaimed the bread to be the best he’d ever tasted in his review. Ian identified a gap in the market for a quality bakery in the Headingley area. In the short time he’s been open he has already attracted many regulars and has a keen memory for people’s favorites. Most of the punters who came by while I was in the shop hardly opened their mouths before Ian correctly selected what they were after.

All the bread is made using traditional methods right there on the premises and Ian prides himself on the fact that his produce has no additives and is made with all natural ingredients. Along with the usual varieties, the bakery also offers a number of specialties such as olive bread, rye, and a mouthwateringly tasty, spicy chilli pepper bread. There are treats for those with a sweet tooth, too, with gingerbread men, macaroons and, another satisfied customer assured me, “the best fruit scones in Leeds”. The bakery’s central location guarantees steady passing trade and is convenient for local residents. The only potential drawback is likely to be backing up traffic at the nearby junction as cars slow to a crawl and drivers roll down their windows to savor the delicious, fresh baked aroma.

This magazine is published by North Leeds Life Limited, 265A Otley Road, West Park, Leeds LS16 5LN. Established in 2005, we are an independent, family-owned and operated business, publishing three monthly magazines covering Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park, Horsforth, Cookridge, Adel, Bramhope, Menston, Otley, Burley-inWharfedale and Ilkley.

TODAY IT HOLDS IT’S OWN AS A HIGH CLASS GROCER, SELLING LOCAL BREAD, EGGS AND DAIRY, FOOD FOR SPECIAL DIETS, AND A WIDE RANGE OF WHOLEFOODS AND ETHICAL FOODS

The initial aim was to build on the success of the established business and continue as a independent, community- based co-operative selling healthy, natural products. Today it holds it’s own as a high class grocer, selling local bread, eggs and dairy, food for special diets, and a wide range of wholefoods and ethical foods, together with bathroom and household goods, cleaning materials, remedies and supplements. To celebrate its three years of community ownership, it is about to embark on a complete refurbishment, thanks to a grant from the Leeds Co-operative Legacy Fund – so look out for the changes throughout November!

We are three! … and to celebrate we are giving you the chance to win a Natural Food Store Hamper. We’re stockists of over 3,000 different products including locally sourced free-range eggs and bread; dairy, cereals, pulses and nuts. We have speciality teas, fruit juices, fair trade chocolate and coffees, jams, Yorkshire honey, baking ingredients and other high quality groceries – and our very own recipe book! It’s three years since the Natural Food Store was bought by its customers and the community, and we’re giving you the chance to win a hamper. Simply hand in this voucher next time you’re in Headingley. We also stock a wide range of products to suit special diets and can order anything that’s not immediately available. Have a look around when you drop your voucher off. The first entry drawn after 30th November will win a hamper of local, healthy and delicious goodies.

LJ 150 AT LEEDS

CITY MUSEUM

It is 150 years since the first synagogue was built in Leeds and the Leeds Jewish Community is marking the occasion with an historic exhibition organised by Makor Jewish Culture Office at Leeds City Museum on Sunday 28th November from 12 – 4pm. LJ150 is a two year project that aims to create a Leeds Jewish Heritage Book and a youth film. These outcomes will lead to participation in the of the Cultural Creative Olympiad in 2012. The exhibition will depict how hard it was for the first Jewish refugees who came to Leeds in the mid 1800s. Fleeing pogroms and persecution in Central Europe, thousands boarded ships which they thought would take them to America. Many of these actually docked in Hull and passengers were often told they had arrived in America. Some settled in Hull, others set out for Liverpool to continue their journey, but hearing that there was work in Leeds, especially in tailoring, many came here. Leeds was not a pretty place. The refugees lived in atrocious conditions, even children were working long hours in the overcrowded sweatshops. The exhibition tries to capture those early days. The small community where people had to help each other to survive, the Old Great Synagogue on Belgrave Street, the dreadful slums. Over the next year there will be various events, education sessions and talks. Groups in the community will be invited to put on events under the LJ150 banner. To get involved contact. ST GEMMA’S AND WHEATFIELDS LOTTERY

HELP!

– 12,000 MEMBERS AND COUNTING! Last year, with the help of North Leeds Life readers, St Gemma’s and Wheatfields Lottery reached their target of 12,000 members. This year, they would like to enlist your help again to raise the bar even higher and aim for 12,500 members.

......................................... Makor is looking for authentic Jewish memorabilia and stories to ensure that the exhibition will have maximum impact, stirring memories of this important Leeds heritage, including old films and photographs, sewing machines and textiles, including vintage clothing, tailor’s dummies, stools, clappers and pressers. Recipes and any stories associated with them, artwork, artefacts and information about Jewish artists from Leeds (e.g. Jacob Kramer, Naviasky or Joash Woodrow) are also welcome.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? .........................................

The Lottery is drawn every Friday and still costs just £1 per week. There are £3,000 in prizes to be won each week, with a top prize of £2,000. Double your chances with more than one number! If you are a member already, why not take out a second number or, how about giving someone lottery membership for Christmas? All profits are equally divided between the two hospices. Both St Gemma’s and Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospices have been caring for local people since 1978, providing an ever-increasing range of services for terminally ill patients and their families, whether at home or in the Hospices. If you would like to share in the care and join the weekly lottery please call the Lottery Office on 0113 278 1500. The lottery is registered with the gambling commission, and all players must be 16 or over. For more information please visit www.hospicelottery.co.uk

Jewish Genealogy Society education officer, Jeanette Rosenberg, will be at Leeds City Museum on 28th November with the Who Do You Think You Are? exhibition stand and lap-top ready to help answer visitors’ genealogical queries. The exhibition will also present a display on Leeds families, showing the contribution made locally and nationally by the Jewish community over the past 150 years. Visitors will be able to add their surname (or one they are associated with) to the ‘community tree’, and ‘post’ forms with family details of the when, where etc. The laden tree will enable the Society to record names that may have missed the censuses, or are too recent to have been included – all of which will help with the family history enquiries they receive.

COMMUNITY NEWS

COUNCILLOR JAMES MONAGHAN Councillors Jamie Matthews, Martin Hamilton and I have been tackling a couple of tricky problems which continue to frustrate residents in Headingley – junk mail and noise nuisance. Residents get bombarded with unwanted leaflets everyday. The first step we’ve taken to put a stop to this is to provide residents with ‘No Junk Mail’ stickers, along with advice on how to reduce the amount of junk mail coming through the letterbox. This includes how to opt out of the Royal Mail’s door-to-door service, and how to register with a free mail preference service. In the last year, ‘No junk mail’ stickers and advice sheets have been sent to hundreds of residents. If you would like to receive these, contact us on 0113 247 4580. If you have a ‘No junk mail’ sticker and are still receiving unwanted leaflets, let us know. We will write to those responsible and let them know that they are causing a serious nuisance and harming the environment. We are making progress with tackling noise nuisance. We’ve worked with the university to establish a quiet zone around Devonshire and James Baillie halls of residence. Signs have gone up to remind people to keep the noise down during the night. The university has also marketed Devonshire Hall as a quiet hall and anyone breaking the rules risks disciplinary action. We don’t want to stop anyone having fun but we are asking students in particular to be considerate of neighbours. If you are experiencing persistent noise nuisance, get in touch with the university’s neighbourhood helpline on 0113 343 1064, or the Council’s noise nuisance team on 0113 222 4406. The sooner we know about it, the sooner we can help sort it out. 10 November 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk

COUNCILLOR BRENDA LANCASTER Councillor Mark Harris and I have written to local residents in response to their concerns regarding the increase in traffic following the opening of Waitrose, and have asked the Highways Department and local police officers to visit the area during the next few weeks to observe traffic flow and parking issues. There is a two hour parking restriction in the newly marked bays on Green Road and funding is available for highways work should it be required after a settling period. Let me know of any problems you may have so we can get them dealt with as quickly as possible. A walk around the Woodleas estate off Tongue Lane has been arranged with representatives of the NHS (who are responsible for the site) and LCC to look at the maintenance work which urgently needs to be done. One issue is finding a contractor large and reputable enough to carry out the work. I am told the NHS has been unsuccessful in securing tenders for the transfer of Meanwood Park Woodland and is reviewing options. The aim is to donate the woodland to the organisation best suited to its ongoing, but firstly it needs to be brought up to standard. I will keep you informed of further developments. Dates for your diary: Councillor surgeries: 6th Nov, 10am Green Road Post Office; 13th Nov, 11am Moor Allerton Library; 25th Nov, 7pm Moortown Baptist Church, includes Police PACT meeting; 27th Nov, 11am Stainbeck United Reform Church. Also, don’t forget Pâté ‘n’ Plonk at Meanwood Institute, 12 – 2pm on 28th November, and the Salvation Army Annual Carol Concert at Leeds Town Hall in aid of Help 4 Heroes on 5th December. You can contact me on 0113 278 7650 or brenda.lancaster@leeds.gov.uk

CHOCOLATE FOUNTAINS FOR DEMENTIA UK Over 30 people, buzzed around two chocolate fountains at Hinsley Hall in Headingley recently. The event was to raise awareness of the need for more specialist Admiral Nurses who support the family and carers of dementia sufferers.

LOVE YOUR HAIR

Three sisters from Leeds, Manchester and Wolverhampton, whose dad died last year of dementia, are on a three year campaign to raise awareness and funds to pay for more nurses. There are only about 100 Admiral nurses in the UK and over 820,000 people with dementia. The sisters have already raised almost £2,000 and have climbed Croagh Patrick in Ireland. Their final challenge will be Kilimanjaro in 2012. The chocolate fountains are just one of a series of easier ‘challenges’. ‘People want to contribute and chocolate fountains are a great way to have fun,’ organiser Breda Theakston said (shown here with sister Siobhan). ‘And not everyone wants to climb mountains!’ No charge was made but over £126 was raised. To find out more about Admiral Nurses, Dementia UK and ideas for other enjoyable community event fundraising ideas go to www.dementiauk.org. You can donate to the sisters’ campaign through their Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/ somethingmadfordad HEADINGLEY ‘THIS PLEASANT RURAL VILLAGE’ by Eveleigh Bradford

UNIQUE GIFT SHOPS

...........................................................

By now you should be thinking about your Christmas shopping strategy: what you’ll buy for whom and how much you’ll spend. That is, of course, unless you’re playing ‘Christmas Chicken’ and waiting until the 11th hour. With Leeds fast becoming a shopping Mecca, we are somewhat spoilt for choice. We here at North Leeds Life are all about supporting local, independent business, so we’ve shopped, almost ‘til we dropped, to find the best stores in our area (hey, someone had to do it!). This year’s guide to gifts will ensure you get something unique and most importantly help you avoid shopping at midnight on Christmas Eve at the petrol station!

Cool, independent shops have been spicing up the retail landscape in Leeds over the past year and The Yorkshire Soap Company (8 Market St, Otley) definitely stands out from the crowd. Their truly unique soaps made to look like cupcakes, truffles or cake slices make fantastic gifts and each one is packaged and wrapped beautifully. Paper Scissor Stone (38 New York St, LS1) is a city centre gem. Men’s and women’s wear you won’t find anywhere else, along with a collection of accessories, art, prints and cards from some amazing designers sourced from all over the globe. Tableau (29 Otley Rd, Headingley) offers a quirky selection of decorative crafts, handmade jewellery, furniture and prints.

SOMETHING OLD MAKES SOMETHING N EW ............................................................

Vintage continues to be all the rage and you’ll find no better range than at Hyde Park Corner, where you can browse through Retro Boutique, The Story of O and The Final Curtain. Be it clothing, furniture or trinkets, you’ll find some great gift options around here. Bird’s Yard (83 Kirkgate, LS1) opened back in the summer and has fast become a favourite among vintage types. With a Corn Exhange-esque vibe, combining a number of stalls under one roof, Bird’s Yard is fun to browse around and a great place to pick up a one off piece by a local designer.

V I N TA G E C O N T I N U E S TO BE ALL THE RAGE AND YOU’LL FIND NO BETTER RANGE THAN AT H Y D E PA R K C O R N E R

If you’d like to get the special someone in your life some designer goods at non designer prices, why not try a dress exchange? Jenni’s Dresser (26 Cross Green, Otley) and Bramhope Dress Agency (11 Eastgate, Bramhope) are both fantastic places to get nearly new designer gear at great prices (this writer has found many a dream bargain there!). So, if you don’t quite have a Harrods budget, these two goldmines should be your next stop!

JACOB’S

NEW HEN-TREPRENEUR AIMS TO BRING FRESH EGGS TO URBAN FAMILIES Liz Milner was surrounded by hens growing up, but when she tried to set up a small hen house for her daughter, Emily, recently she couldn’t find affordable, traditional hen houses and materials locally. Taking into account the growing popularity of hen-keeping, she sensed a business opportunity and Clucking Hens was born. “It was a classic case of not being able to find a solution to my own problem that inspired me”, said hen-trepreneur, Liz, who has never forgotten the joy of going out to collect freshly laid eggs and having them for breakfast. “Today, you don’t need to live on a farm to do this, there’s a genuine trend for hen-keeping among urban families.”

Clucking Hens provides readymade hen starter packs. “I want to bring a bit of the countryside to the urban gardens of north Leeds, Harrogate and the Wharf Valley”, she told us. “I didn’t want to use the modern, plastic hen houses you can get now, for me it was all about keeping it simple, traditional and, above all, affordable.

“Clucking Hens will provide an assembled hen house and feeder, bedding and healthy hen pack, as well as the birds themselves – and you can be eating your own eggs very soon.” For more information visit www. cluckinghens.co.uk or call 01423 712090/ 0771 5001394

IN THIS SEASON OF MISTS AND MELLOW FRUITFULNESS..... THOUGHTS CAN QUICKLY TURN TO SOUP! This month I am going to talk about the majesty that is soup! Many see this as a dish only for the winter months, but an enriching gazpacho, or a pungent wild garlic soup are just as at home in spring or summer. Soups are one of the oldest forms of cooking – a chunk of animal, a handful of vegetables and herbs, all thrown into a large pot with plenty of liquid to absorb the flavours and nestled atop a fire. One can imagine this being cooked thousands of years ago. In medieval times, sop or soupe was the name given to the bread over which the contents of the large cooking pot (potage) was poured. From here, the term soup has gone on to encapsulate a whole range of liquid-based gastronomic wonders.

The variety from region to region is truly impressive. Whatever the style of cuisine, the one thing that will always make your soup stand out is a good stock. In Japan, miso soups and ramens are made from dashi, a stock base usually made from katsuobushi (or bonito flakes), dried fermented tuna flakes, and kombu, dried kelp. These impart a rich and distinctive flavour, and, like all good stocks, provide robust body – imperative for this style of cooking. I especially love a good chicken soup, as I’m sure everyone who has ever experienced its miraculous healing powers does. Every culture has its own take

on this classic. My parent’s Jewish Penicillin (never was a dish so aptly named), with its noodles and kneydlach (matzah dumplings), would cure any ill. The Grecian avgolemono is another favourite; here rice is cooked in the chicken stock before removing from the heat and finishing it off with a mixture of lemon and eggs – the eggs endowing the soup with a silky, unctuous feel. The quality of the chicken stock cannot be stressed enough: where a stock cube might suffice in lieu of the real deal in some instances, here it simply will not. As if one needed another reason for roast chicken on a Sunday! One can make soup out of almost anything – be creative! An onion, a little garlic maybe, a few of your favourite aromatics and vegetables (or even fruit), and of course a little water or stock, and whizz in a blender. They can be thickened with a few potatoes, a little rice or other grain, or some stale bread. Check out my recipes on the website (www. northleedslife.co.uk). I have included a spicy, dry and rich Chorizo, Tomato and Pepper soup (a tribute to the wonderful Moro cookbook, which I have been unable to keep my nose out of lately), and a wintery, almost (dare I say it?) Christmassy, Jerusalem Artichoke and Chestnut soup, as earthy and velvety as you could wish for. By Jacob Rosen northleedslife.co.uk | November 2010 29

GARDENROUND-UP

By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural Society

....................................................................................................................................................................................................

Plant catalogues have been dropping through letterboxes for a couple of months – you could spend a fortune! Make sure you have the room for new plants and that the species will survive in the North. Most bulbs have been planted by now, but tulips are best left until this month. Remember to put some wire netting under the surface to stop squirrels getting at them. There are plenty of bare rooted roses around. Don’t discount those in supermarkets, they are just as good as those found in garden centres. Prepare the ground by digging over well and adding compost. Take care to label each plant before discarding the packaging. Put them into a bucket with enough water to cover the roots and leave overnight. This helps to straighten out the roots and gives them a good drink before planting. Make sure they are firmly planted to stop any wind or frost from lifting them. Sadly, some garden centres sell roses that have just been potted

up so roots haven’t had time to settle. Beware of plants that have moss or weeds as they have been hanging around too long. As this month progresses, borders and beds can look dull. Think about planting salx and cornus to give colour through until spring. Prune them back hard so that new stems grow and colour up for the winter. Winter flowering heathers give a nice sunlit look to a dark corner but needs room to grow. Lonicera nitida ‘baggenson gold’ is a small leafed shrub that can be clipped into shape but needs a sunny position to retain its brilliant colour. Hardwood cuttings can still be taken from trees and shrubs. Select a cutting a foot in length, make a clean sloping cut at the top just above a leaf joint and a straight one at the bottom below a joint, and dip the lower part in hormone rooting powder. Dig a small trench in a shady spot with a mixture of sharp sand at the bottom and rest the labelled cutting on the base. Firm it well in and a year on they will have rooted to either pot up or plant out.

AS THIS MONTH PROGRESSES, BORDERS AND BEDS CAN LOOK DULL. THINK ABOUT PLANTING SALX AND CORNUS TO GIVE COLOUR THROUGH UNTIL SPRING.

Epernay Nestled away in the heart of Leeds is a great little venue that has all the ingredients for a fantastic night out. The Electric Press is home to Leeds’s only Champagne bar, Epernay, the Italian restaurant Casa Mia, and Carriageworks Theatre, among others. Over 30 varieties of Champagne Epernay’s atmospheric bar, all dark wood and exposed brickwork, draws you in conspiratorially to quaff bubbly by the glass or bottle, or sample some of the most delicious Champagne cocktails. The bar stocks more than 30 varieties of Champagne and has a menu of over 70 tempting cocktails. Champagne is a little bit special. You reach for it to celebrate every notable occasion. Visit Epernay and you will suddenly find more occasions than ever to celebrate! General Manager Dominic Jacobs says Champagne is ‘just a drink’ made simply to be enjoyed. Epernay is determined that you do. The staff know their stuff and can recommend brands to suit both your palate and your pocket. The range is impressive, with particular highlights including the Perrier-Jouet Belle Epoque Blanc de Blancs 1999, of which there are only 60 bottles in the UK (£400 per bottle!)

TAKE A GLASS OF BUBBLY, A HOT ITALIAN AND A SHOT OF CULTURE... ENJOY A GREAT NIGHT OUT AT THE ELECTRIC PRESS Try a glass of citrus heaven But don’t panic! Prices start at just £32 per bottle and £6.50 per glass. Cocktails average out at around £6.50. Try the Classic Champagne Cocktail (Cognac, Champagne, a sugar cube soaked in Angostura Bitters), the Jane Mansfield (strawberries, Appleton rum, Champagne), or the Plantation Royale (Mount Gay rum, Giffard banana, lime). More unusual choices include the light and tasty London 1875 (Earl Grey tea infused Beefeater Gin, lemon, sugar, Champagne), Labourers’ Gold (Tequila, agave syrup, lime, mint, Champagne), and the Hemingway Royale (grapefruit, cherries, Champagne) created by Dominic - a glass of citrus heaven!

Casa Mia

And now for that Hot Italian! After that great aperitif, just nip around the corner and into Casa Mia Millennium. What I love about Casa Mia is that, if you block out the rain outside, you really can imagine you are in some romantic Italian city. It’s the combination of the chequered marble floor, the long sparkling counter, the wine bottles, the deep red walls, glass topped tables, and the handsome, attentive waiters! Casa Mia is a deli, bar and restaurant based over two floors and there is a great al fresco area too. It’s perfect for a pre theatre supper before taking in one of the shows in The Carriageworks ‘Freshly Picked’ season or a comedy night. Fantastic choice

Tasting Evenings Epernay also has a range of tasting evenings – ‘The Intimate Collection’ is ideal for those who want to learn more about this superb tipple. At £25 per head, it’s a fun and affordable way to learn. Even more fun is the Champagne Cocktail Masterclass where you can learn how to make some of the great classic cocktails. The night we went, we just went to enjoy Casa Mia – no distractions. As usual, being confronted by a menu with pages of choices did present a slight dilemma, but we munched our way happily through a bowl of olives as we tried to decide. We finally settled on Calamari Fritti with tartar sauce (£7.95) and a deliciously rich and tangy Tomato and Roast Pepper Soup (£5) for starters. We decided to stick with the Specials menu for the main course, choosing the Slow Roast

Pork (11.95) with confit potato, sage crumb, Parma ham and pork jus, and the Grigliata Mista di Pesce (£14.95) – a grilled trio of fresh fish: salmon, tuna and swordfish, cooked with white wine, lemon juice, chunks of garlic and rosemary, with some wilted spinach on the side. It was positively delicious. The Slow Roast Pork was so tender it just fell apart. It was amazingly flavoursome and the portion so generous it almost defeated Jack – but not quite!

If we worked in Leeds we could definitely see how Casa Mia could become a habit – drop in for coffee and perhaps brioche on the way to work, do a little bit of people watching over a quick pasta dish or freshly cooked pizza at lunch time – you could even pick something up for dinner on your way home!

THEY LIVED IN HEADINGLEY

Bird Watch with Stan Kenyon Owls are prominent in folklore and literature and adorn this City’s coat of arms. The most familiar species is the tawny owl, responsible for the hooting and ke-wick notes heard after dark, including these autumn evenings. Large-headed and plump with broad rounded wings, this owl is mottled brown and finely streaked. It occurs in woods and wooded farmland and even in urban parks and large gardens. Little owls are also brown but smaller, flying in deep undulations. They like fields edged with small trees and occur up to moorland edges and the Leeds limits. Slightly smaller than the tawny, the barn owl favours lowland farmland and marshes with scattered trees. It has a slim body with a pale heart-shaped face and long wings and looks ghostly, with pale buff upperparts and whitish below. Numbers of these nocturnal birds remain fairly stable, except for the barn owl which has declined markedly, but there is a welcome hint of a revival.

BANGS & A BUN

.............................................................................................

After four months of training, the day of my big half marathon race finally arrived on October 10th. In the run up to it, I was petrified I’d twist an ankle or throw my back out. As it transpired, I came down with a mean case of laryngitis two weeks beforehand, which set my training back considerably. Nevertheless, I got myself to the start line with a friend/all around madman who runs marathons in his sleep, who had agreed to run it with me to ensure I didn’t die en route. There were 12,500 other crazy people participating and the atmosphere was electric. Some did it in fancy dress, including one guy who came dressed as ‘The Stig’ which I can’t imagine was very comfortable. I did fine up until about nine miles when my body threw a bit of a hissy fit. Everything hurt, but I powered through. An amazing crowd of people lined the route, cheering us all on. By the time I saw the mile 12 marker and knew I had just one more mile to go, I was ecstatic. I got rather emotional seeing the finish line, but crossing it had me in floods of tears. Such an amazing feeling. So, it’s true, I may have caught the running bug a little bit, but the next person who says, ‘So, it’ll be a full marathon for you next then!’ I may just punch them in the face.

Village Schoolmaster and Overseer of The Poor .............................................................................................

The house overlooks the graveyard of St Michael’s Church, in the heart of the old village of Headingley. From the window, there’s a good view of the road, The Original Oak and The Skyrack – ideal for keeping an eye on everything going on. In the 1830s and 40s this was the home of Benjamin Brooke, who played a key role in village affairs as schoolmaster and local ‘Overseer of the Poor’. Not only was he responsible for teaching the village children but also the dayby-day administration of the ancient and complex system for dealing with the poor and destitute in the locality. Benjamin was the son of Joseph Brooke, master of the small charity school built in 1783 on the village green near St Michael’s (later rebuilt as St Michael’s School, and now the Parish Centre). Joseph also acted as Overseer of the Poor for Headingley and was sometimes elected at annual township meetings to take on other (unpaid) jobs, as local ‘surveyor of the highways’ or constable. The family lived in the small house attached to the school, with a stable and garden behind. When Joseph retired in 1825 – rewarded by a silver cup for his 40 years of ‘faithful and upright’ service – Benjamin followed him both as schoolmaster and Overseer, as well as serving as Parish Clerk and sometimes as constable. By this time the job of Overseer was salaried, and in 1835 he took it on full-time, retiring from teaching. It was clearly a role he relished and it gave him considerable power. As Overseer he was responsible for collecting the poor rate from local residents and assessing need. Headingley was not an area of desperate poverty and poor rates were low, but he kept a tight hold on the purse-strings. He had to check who was eligible for relief through ‘settlement’ in the township,

pursue the fathers of illegitimate children for support (many fled elsewhere to escape liability), and investigate and assess each claim for relief. His aim was to pay the absolute minimum – one sick man with a wife and four children got just six shillings a week! Two cottages in Far Headingley were rented as housing for paupers, but people incapable of work - the old, the sick and the insane - were sent to the workhouse. Until 1868 Headingley was part of the huge Wharfedale Poor Law Union, so they had to go to the Union’s workhouse at Carlton, far across the fields near Guiseley. It was unhealthy and overcrowded, with only primitive facilities, particularly for the insane, who at worst could be tied up in the ‘black hole’. This workhouse was later condemned and demolished. However, it was said that many poor people endured conditions just as bad in their own homes. Benjamin Brooke was one of the overseers who gave evidence in 1832 to the Commissioners appointed to report on current Poor Law practice and recommend changes. His report makes interesting reading. He believed in trying to keep families together and finding work for the unemployed (often just stonebreaking), but his general attitude was tough and penny-pinching – he had to account to the local ratepayers. He believed in pursuing those who tried to cheat and brought several culprits before the magistrates. While he was praised for his efficiency and honesty, he was later rebuked by the Poor Law Commissioners for his harsh and insulting treatment of a couple who had applied to him for help. Times were changing, but he remained in post until his death in 1851. The part he played is a reminder of an almost forgotten aspect of Headingley’s past.

THE NATIONAL THEATRE BRINGS ALAN BENNETT BACK TO LEEDS After a sell-out success in London, The National Theatre is bringing Alan Bennett’s latest smash hit play, The Habit of Art, to the Grand Theatre in Leeds from 9th – 13th November.

CH ROOFING Professional and Reliable Roofing Service From Small Repairs to Full Re-roofs

It is set in Oxford 1972. Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station.

DEEPLY FUNNY AND THOUGHT PROVOKING, Alan Bennett’s new play, directed by IT REFLECTS ON Nicholas Hytner and starring Desmond GROWING OLD, Barritt and Malcolm Sinclair, is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry ON CREATIVITY music. It looks at the unsettling AND INSPIRATION, or desires of two difficult men, and at the AND ON ethics of biography. Deeply funny and PERSISTING WHEN thought provoking, it reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and ALL PASSION IS on persisting when all passion is spent: ultimately, on the habit of art. SWEENEY TODD AS YOU’VE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE! Meet the monstrous murderer, hear his terrible tale, and watch him hang horribly for his grisly, ghastly and gruesome crimes. Working with an international team of puppeteers and performers, Finger in the Pie Theatre Company has devised a brand new version of Sweeney Todd. Recasting Sweeney Todd as a clown in the tradition of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, they have combined slap stick humour and grotesque characters with physical storytelling, puppetry and live cabaret music, to bring to life the seething underworld of eighteenth century London. The show also features a filmed shadow animation, created by puppeteers from the Jim Henson Workshop.

LDFAS INTRODUCES BOOK PRESERVATION The Leeds Decorative and Fine Arts Society (LDFAS) recently held a display on book preservation at Leeds Library, the oldest surviving public subscription library in the country. Over 400 visitors were introduced to the work of the preservation team, led by Sally Wilkinson (with arm in pot!). Sally is aided by decorative and Fine Arts Societies in Halifax, Harrogate, Nidd Valley and Saltaire.

A CATALOGUE OF WORLD TEXTILES Fine embroidery from India and the Mediterranean; delicate Japanese stencils; rare Egyptian costume; bold Pakistani prints; sumptuous Kashmiri shawls; fascinating pattern books, zebra and armadillo fibres, and how to make fibreglass curtains! With generous funding from the Clothworkers’ Company, staff at ULITA (University of Leeds International Textiles Archive) has undertaken the task of documenting and conserving seven major international collections. This has culminated in a database of over three thousand records, many of which are now available to view online. To celebrate the conclusion of the project, this exhibition will present highlights from the collections alongside details of how the work was undertaken, including the discovery of historical documentation, the stories behind the donors, the work of volunteers, and detailed analysis by a textiles conservator. The exhibition runs until 27th May 2011(excluding University Christmas vacation) at ULITA, St. Wilfred’s Chapel, Maurice Keyworth Building, University of Leeds, LS2 9JT. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 9.30am – 4.30pm. Further information 0113 343 3919. 42 November 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk

There is a huge amount of time and skill in these works of art, with each carving taking an average of 100 to 120 hours to create. After the unveiling, they will reside permanently in the Armouries. Members of the WRWCA have produced other panels in the past and you can see examples of their work on their website www.wrwoodcarvers. com/gallery/.

THE GATHERING BRINGS A TASTE OF IRELAND TO LEEDS AGAIN The celebration of Irish arts and culture kicks off in Leeds from the 5th November. Dozens of events including music sessions, literary, film and educational events will take place at venues across Leeds, bringing some of Ireland’s finest artists to the city. Organised by the Irish Arts Foundation, based at the West Park Centre in LS16, events are designed to appeal to both those of an Irish background and people from the wider community with an interest in music and the arts. Lisa Morris, Irish Arts Foundation Development Officer explains, “The thinking behind the Leeds Gathering is to provide a platform for the Irish community in Leeds to showcase their rich and vibrant cultural traditions, we are also interested in developing new audiences for Irish arts.”

“THE THINKING BEHIND THE LEEDS GATHERING IS TO PROVIDE A PLATFORM FOR THE IRISH COMMUNITY IN LEEDS TO SHOWCASE THEIR RICH AND VIBRANT CULTURAL TRADITIONS” The Leeds Gathering features some of the most dynamic local, national and international performers and artistes in the world of Irish and Celtic arts. This year’s festival features performances from The London Lasses and Pete Quinn, Aly Bain, Brian Finnegan, The Heather Breeze Ceili Band and comedian Dara O’Briain. In addition, there is a fine line up of visiting session musicians, literary events, educational workshops and the UK Premier of the Irish Film Zonad. For further information and a full programme of events, contact Irish Arts Foundation on info@irisharts.org.uk or visit www.irisharts.org.uk

Held in the comfortable surroundings of the function room at The New Headingley Club on the last Friday of every month, it has featured a wide variety of accomplished musicians, playing great blues, mixed with folk and jazz, to appreciative audiences. There were big successes like the reformed Shuffle Monsters, Steve Phillips and the Helen Watson Trio. Other acts, Monkey Wrenchers, Waldo’s Washboard Wizards, Hokum Hotshots, Ray Stubbs one man band, Bon Appetit!, Kevin Conlon, Miranda vs the Crok, Manduh Box Band and Paul Judge’s Jackals all put on great shows too. Duncan McFarlane’s acoustic folk band on 29th October will no doubt be another great one. Dave Speight, who played the first ‘Roots’ gig, is returning to play on this 1st anniversary – a very welcome return of a great performer. “While he may be an unfamiliar name to many, Dave is highly regarded among his contemporaries as being one of the most technically accomplished guitarists around, a soulful singer and a highly engaging stage performer to boot” “The noisy crowd at The Great British Blues Festival in Colne, Lancashire, who were quickly hushed into awed silence during Dave’s performance on the acoustic stage last year can vouch for Dave’s expertise and dexterity as he quickly won the crowd over and held them spellbound in the palm of his hand!“ said Jim Murray of the Blues Lounge and The Ripley Blues Club. If you’re a lover of acoustic blues from the likes of Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt, Leadbelly and Robert Johnson then come along and enjoy a master of his craft at work.

GAMES REVIEWS

Halo Reach XBOX360 BBFC – N/A

Sadly, Halo Reach is the final time that original developers Bungie are involved in the iconic series, with Microsoft handing the reins to fledgling developer 343 Industries. With this in mind, Bungie have set out to make the best game yet.

Thankfully, they have been more than triumphant in meeting their goal. Reach features a completely new game engine which provides awe inspiring, immersive environments in which to play. The familiar washed-out colour palette and distinctive Halo feel has been supercharged to show the skill and commitment of the team involved. With an expansive single player campaign across a number of tough locations, players will find themselves fighting both on the ground and in a range of familiar vehicles, as well as in a star fighter during a memorable dog fight sequence. As ever, the storyline is immersive and addictive and will have you wanting more. Multiplayer is fun, fast and frantic and all together, Halo Reach really is a must have.

Once the pinnacle of 16 Bit Gaming, Super Metroid on the SNES garnered much praise and spawned a number of sequels. Despite these various enjoyable romps, there has never been a direct continuation of the original story until now.

Metroid Other M Nintendo Wii Other M picks up directly where Super BBFC – N/A Metroid ended, with a nostalgic recap

on the final few minutes of the battle with Mother Brain which sets the scene for Other M. Team Ninja are obviously aiming the game at older hands who will be familiar with the previous game and for a Nintendo Wii game. Other M is relatively mature in its themes. It looks great but unfortunately movement and aiming is hampered by a limited control scheme and, with the lack of a lock on ability, players will be running around in circles hoping auto-lock kicks in! A solid, stylish update, but one that will only appeal to a limited audience of nostalgic players.

ALBUM REVIEW

Turn over

By Brendan Campbell

BAND OF JOY Robert Plant

....................

Following 2007’s Raising Sand, the sublime album recorded with Alison Krauss, Band of Joy finds Robert Plant still on fine form and making some of the best music of his formidable career. The fact that Plant declined a proposed extended Led Zeppelin reunion in favor of continuing in his recent musical vein shows how passionately he’s thrown himself into these recordings infused with blues, folk, and country. That famous voice has mellowed somewhat with age. Gone is the banshee wail of Led Zep’s rock behemoth heyday, replaced with a softer more subtly expressive tone perfectly suited to the material. The album features superb production, a solid, consistently rootsy feel, and Plant is aided, once again, by an excellent group of musicians. Special mention must go to Darrell Scott, whose work on guitar, banjo, mandolin, lap steel, pedal steel and accordion is flawless throughout. The entire LP makes for compelling listening from the gentle, haunting balladry of Silver Rider and I’m Falling in Love Again to the rockier Can’t Buy My Love, Angel Dance and magnificent album closer, Even This Shall Pass Away. Brilliant stuff.

FILM REVIEW I’M STILL HERE Directed by: Casey Affleck Starring: Joaquin Phoenix

....................

When, towards the end of 2008, Joaquin Phoenix announced that he was retiring from acting to pursue an ill-advised new career as a Hip Hop artist, both eyebrows and suspicions were raised throughout Hollywood. That his every move was being followed and documented on film by his brother in law, Casey Affleck, only reinforced the opinion many held that the entire affair was a hoax. Following the movie’s release, the filmmaker and star have since come clean and revealed that the resultant documentary is, indeed, a cunning ruse. It’s a testament to Phoenix’s skill as a performer that, even with this knowledge, one feels as if you’re actually watching an intimate and candid study of a star in freefall. I’m Still Here, for me, brought to mind two films with Bob Dylan as their subject; the title references and echoes Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There, in which several actors played Dylan at different points in his career, and Don’t Look Back, D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary following Dylan’s 1965 tour of England. Both these films address Dylan’s manipulation of his public persona, his knack for self mythologizing, and his cagey and evasive dealings with the press. Similar themes are at work in I’m Still Here and Affleck’s impressively put together picture is stylistically reminiscent of Pennebaker’s film. Observed at close quarters, Phoenix’s spiraling meltdown is alarmingly convincing and produces many wonderfully comic moments. The star, who a year earlier had portrayed Johnny Cash in Walk The Line to universal critical acclaim, is unrecognizable as he piles on the pounds and grows masses of unkempt hair. He’s shown indulging in all manner of debauchery (doing drugs, ordering hookers from the internet) and there is much goofing around with his increasingly put upon inner circle. Phoenix actually spends much of the film behaving like a tremendous asshole and you can imagine him relishing the role with mischievous glee as he and Affleck chortle behind the backs of those duped by the prank. It’s hard to discern which, if any, of the celebrities who appear throughout the film were in on the gag. Ben Stiller seems genuinely baffled and David Letterman is visibly exasperated with Phoenix’s monosyllabic appearance on his talk show. A hilarious highlight is a meeting with P Diddy, whom Phoenix hopes will produce his debut hip hop album. The look on Diddy’s face as he assesses the questionable musical offerings is priceless. An intriguing and well made mockumentary, I’m Still Here is at once a canny satire on celebrity culture and the pressures of fame, and a portrait of an artist at a creative crossroads in the throes of a crisis of self belief.

RICHMOND HOUSE RICHMOND HOUSE STUDENTS THROUGH TO FINAL IN JUNIOR LANGUAGE CHALLENGE! Three pupils from Richmond House School, Far Headingley, were the only Yorkshire semi-finalists to go through to the finals of the Junior Language Challenge in London’s Earls Court in October.

GIRLGUIDING’S VISION - 20:10, 20/10, 2010 On the 20th October Girlguiding Leeds celebrated the end of Girlguiding’s Centenary Year. The huge event at Headingley Rugby Stadium provided the opportunity for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section, Guiders, Trefoil Guild and parents to reflect on a memorable year, and to look forward to the next 100 years! The aim of Vision was to bring all members of Girlguiding UK together to share one moment in time. Units, districts, divisions and counties all over the UK came together simultaneously and celebrated in style. At Headingley Rugby Stadium almost 5,000 girls, leaders and parents were treated to a display of flags, drumming, music, song and dance. The inspiring finale was a mass renewal of the Promise at 8.10pm (20:10), led via satellite on the big screen by Chief Guide, Liz Burnley. Then everyone was treated to a fireworks display which brought a magical evening to a close.

The Junior Language Challenge is an annual competition that challenges children from across the British Isles to learn foreign languages. The competition is incredibly tough and to have three representatives from Yorkshire in the final is a massive achievement. The competition offers prizes to the winners with a family holiday of lifetime to Africa, up for grabs to the overall winner. The three finalists from Richmond House: Simran, Alfie & Alex (pictured with the other semi-finalists) are learning Chichewa – the official language of Malawi, which in itself is rather challenging.

BEECHTREE STEINER PARENT & CHILD GROUPS (0 – 3 YEAR OLDS) Parent and child groups are part of Beechtree Steiner Initiative. RALPH THORESBY STUDENTS GAIN EUROPEAN RECOGNITION

come meet us

Dortmund in Germany and Leeds are partner cities. The Ruhr Valley currently holds the title of Capital of Culture 2010 and many events, exhibitions and projects have taken place to emphasise the richness and variety and our common cultural heritage in Europe.

MONDAY 22nd NOVEMBER 6PM

As part of this, young people in both cities were asked to explore youth culture through art and students of photography at Ralph Thoresby School took up the challenge. Abigail Jeffreys, Steven Richards, Hannah Poklad, Tom Cartwright and Aaron Briscoe had their work selected and shipped to Germany for the first of two exhibitions. The selected works are scheduled to be exhibited in both cities in a joint ‘U-gallery’ exhibition which is taking place in Dortmund until 18th November and will be in Leeds from 18th December – 13th March 2011. “To have work in a public exhibition is a great accolade – but to have European recognition is astounding”, said Brian Wilson, Director of Arts at Ralph Thoresby School. “Photography is a relatively new art form at the school and is very popular with the students. We have seen some very exciting standards achieved.”

LYJRO’S LIFE CHANGING TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA LYJRO, the Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra, recently returned from a life-changing musical and cultural exchange with Leeds’ twin city: Durban, South Africa. The trip was the band’s second to Durban, their main objective being to deliver musical workshops to children in primary schools. All members of the band participated whole-heartedly in the teaching: through singing, playing recorders, chime bars or percussion. Each day spent in the primary schools culminated in a joint performance which was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience. From the broad smiles on their faces, it was always clear just how much the children had enjoyed the day. LYJRO raised £8,000 and sent various instruments to a township arts centre, and this had been put to fantastic use. The band has now changed the direction of its fundraising and will be providing bursaries to music students at Durban University, to enable them to go to the primary schools (twinned with Cookridge and Bramley primary schools) and continue the teaching and musical development LYJRO has started. The instruments have already been provided by LYJRO, who have been raising money for this cause for some time. Keep an eye out for future LYJRO performances. Visit www.lyjro.org.uk for more details.

GYM TONIC RAISES £2,500 AND PLEDGES MORE Lucy James of Gym Tonic in Meanwood spent a year fundraising and then climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise £2,500 for the Tuleeni orphanage in Moshi, Tanzania. She used the money to buy supplies, including school uniforms so that every child could start school.

amazing views was one of the most incredible and rewarding experiences.” For more information about joining the Gym Tonic Running Club and raising money for Tuleeni, contact Lucy on 07940 118107 or gymtonic@hotmail.co.uk .

She was so shocked by the conditions at the orphanage that she has decided to continue fundraising to help improve the lives of the children who have so little yet are always smiling. Amongst other things, she will be donating all profits from her running club at Gym Tonic to the orphanage. “When I decided to climb Kilimanjaro I really didn’t know what I was letting myself in for!” said Lucy. “I’ve always wanted to visit Africa and love a good challenge. I figured if Cheryl Cole could do it so could I! Well, yes, I could, but it wasn’t quite as easy as I thought. “The first four days were relatively easy but the summit climb was the hardest thing I have ever experienced. Temperatures of -20 degrees and gale force winds combined with limited oxygen made it nearly impossible to catch your breath. Add the headaches and sickness caused by high altitude and it didn’t make for an enjoyable night out! “The summit climb began at midnight and the only light was from your head torch, making climbing difficult. On the plus side, you couldn’t see the gradients ahead or you might have given up. Despite this being the coldest and hardest six hours of my life, finally reaching the summit and taking in the

We live in stressful times and stress affects everyone differently. ‘The stress of it all is making me ill’ is a term I hear a lot, and continued stress

can produce physical symptoms such as migraines, IBS, skin and respiratory problems and even tumours. Take the case of a schoolteacher who came to see me recently suffering from, amongst other things, almost continuous headaches for the past five years. The deputy head of a large comprehensive, she had a great deal of stress at work. After a course of treatment with the remedy Natrum Muriaticum*, which matched her overall symptom picture perfectly, the headaches stopped and

have not returned. In addition, she says she now has more energy, feels happier, calmer and better able to cope with all aspects of her life. If stress is affecting you, or you would just like to know more about how homeopathy can help you or your family, please contact me or visit our website. Anthony Robinson MBRCP Hom The Yorkshire Centre of Classical Homeopathy 01274 519800 | www.ycch.co.uk *If you are suffering with continuous headaches please remember that Homeopathy is a very individual form of medicine and a remedy other than Natrum Muriaticum may be required in your case. It is always best to consult a qualified homeopath.
