Yorkshire Sculpture International brings us 100 days of fabulous sculpture over venues in Leeds and Wakefield. Leeds Central Library asks people who have worked at the Library over the years to get in touch with their memories.

In addition, Ilkley Literature Festival flags up the fact that our new Poet Laureate will open the event in October; Age Friendly Leeds is looking for more people to join its Steering Committee; and Leeds Jazz Festival expands into a major four-day event. New recruits to West Yorkshire Police will be able to study for a degree at Leeds Trinity University from Spring 2020, under a new apprenticeship programme.

Three hundred new police officers are being recruited under a new training pathway which requires all police officers to hold a degree. Trainees will be educated and mentored by experienced police officers at West Yorkshire Police’s Learning and Development Centre in Wakefield and will complete a Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship at Leeds Trinity. They will be paid as a Police Officer from day one, with all university fees met by the Force. “Leeds Trinity has always been committed to transforming lives and benefitting our local community”, said Professor Margaret House, Vice-Chancellor, Leeds Trinity. “We have developed a programme of policing that is relevant, inspiring and impactful, and we’re looking forward to welcoming the first cohort of police apprentices next year.” From July 2019, those interested can register online to be notified when recruitment opens. The Force is particularly interested in reaching out to those of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, in order to better represent the communities in which they serve. “We want everyone living in West Yorkshire to feel their force represents them and we’re striving to better represent all of our communities”, said Angela Williams, Assistant Chief Constable at West Yorkshire Police. “Our Police Constable Degree Apprenticeships will prepare and train officers to deal with evolving serious and complex crime. The three-year apprenticeship will allow

Leeds Trinity will also allow those holding a non-policing degree to complete a two-year learning programme to become a qualified police officer. From September 2020, the University is also delivering a BA Professional Policing undergraduate degree programme. To become a police officer, you need to be 18, have a Level 3 qualification or equivalent, no criminal convictions (minor offences considered on a caseby-case basis), and be able to pass a job-related fitness test. The starting salary is from £18,000, with incremental annual increases leading to a salary of £24,654 on successful completion of the programme and confirmation in role. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

FREDERICK ROBERT SPARK (1831-1919) Journalist and first Secretary of the Leeds Musical Festivals For over a century the triennial Leeds Musical Festivals brought a glittering array of composers, conductors and performers to the city, to enchant and entertain. In the early years Edward Elgar, Arthur Sullivan, Serge Rachmaninoff, Anton Dvorak, Hubert Parry, Ralph Vaughan Williams and many others came here to conduct or perform their work, sometimes specially commissioned. Choral works predominated: star soloists were engaged and the huge Festival Chorus was recruited from the best voices in the West Riding, famed for its choral tradition. For the four days of morning and evening concerts Leeds took on a carnival atmosphere, with crowds gathered outside the garlanded Town Hall to admire the great and good promenading in their finery – full evening dress recommended, large feathered hats banned!

All this took immense organisation, and for the first 50 years of the Festivals the key man behind the scenes was the journalist Fred Spark. Music was in his blood. Originally from Exeter, he had been a cathedral chorister there and like his brothers had studied the organ under the famous Samuel Sebastian Wesley. But Fred took another career path: at 16 he was apprenticed to the local newspaper (4 shillings a week), then left for London as a printer in a music business. Meanwhile his older brother William had followed Wesley to Leeds and was organist at St George’s church (and later city organist). It was at William’s suggestion that Fred came to Leeds in 1851, where he landed a job as reporter for the Leeds Mercury newspaper. He was soon involved in William’s various musical enterprises: the thriving Madrigal and Motet Society (in bitter rivalry with the existing Choral Society); and a series of popular ‘People’s Concerts’ designed for working people. Fred sang in the choir and helped organise the concerts. But in 1858 his life took a new turn and he resigned his job at the Mercury.

In that year the long-awaited Town Hall was to be opened by Queen Victoria, and vast celebrations were planned. Now Leeds would finally have a performance space for major music events. William Spark and Henry Smart from London were commissioned to design the massive organ (an essential) and a great four-day musical festival was proposed to follow the Royal visit, profits to be donated to the Infirmary. Fred Spark was appointed Hon. (unpaid) Secretary to the organising committee. The timescale was tight and subject to last minute change, but the Festival was successfully staged and hailed as a triumph. £2,000 went to the Infirmary while Fred got a frugal 20 guinea honorarium. But for him it was a labour of love. The next Festival was planned for 1861 but petty bickering and rivalry forced it to be abandoned: it was to be 16 years before the idea was revived. Meanwhile Fred had taken over the management of a small weekly newspaper, the Leeds Express, aimed at working people and promoting reform; he reduced the price to an affordable 1 penny. He later borrowed money to buy it, started

a halfpenny evening paper, the first in the country, and set up his own printing business. He married Eliza Sanderson, a solicitor’s daughter, and they made their home in Woodhouse. Four children followed. None of this prevented him volunteering again for the role of unpaid secretary for the second Festival in 1874 and then for every Festival up to and including 1907 – a remarkable record. He took charge of all the practical arrangements and the negotiations with the sometimes temperamental composers, conductors and performers, as well as dealing with the opinionated Festival committee who seldom agreed. He enjoyed a particularly good relationship with Sir Arthur Sullivan who conducted the Festivals from 1880-1898. When Fred resigned, the job became salaried. He was later to write his memoirs and contribute to a history of the Festivals – frank and not without humour!

Leeds Working Men’s Hall where he gave singing lessons to the men after work, and in 1886 he founded the long-surviving Leeds Workpeople’s Hospital Fund to support local medical services. He played his part in the national Press Association and the Provincial Newspapers Society. He gave his spare time to organising and singing in concerts out in the villages around Leeds– and enjoyed some fun, including presenting his 20-minute version of ‘Hamlet’! He died in 1819 aged 88. The Musical Festivals he had supported so devotedly continued until 1985, and the Festival Chorus which originated with that first 1858 Festival still thrives today.

He was active in many other roles – as a JP, as Liberal Councillor and later Alderman, and on the committee of many worthy causes in Leeds, notably to benefit working people. He was founding secretary of the

Summer Bands in Leeds Parks

Central Library There have been many reports of spooky and unexplainable sights and occurrences – not surprising for a building that can boast over 130-years of history. Whether you were a museum curator, city policeman, librarian, or one of the many joiners, electricians or builders who worked there over the years – the Library would love to chat to you and find out more about the stories and secrets of this great building as they work toward publishing an illustrated book on its rich heritage.

Do you have memories of working in the Leeds Municipal Building on Calverley Street? Leeds Library Service is keen to hear from you, as their local history librarians begin an exciting new project exploring the heritage of one of the city’s best known Victorian buildings. Opened in 1884, the building has been home to the City Engineers, Rate Departments, Police Force, Museum Service, and much more. It is now Leeds Central Library and the Tiled Hall Café, which connects the Library to the neighbouring Art Gallery. It is hoped that the many hundreds of people who have worked in the building over the years will have numerous quirky and interesting stories to tell – including the time a live snake escaped from a Museum ‘Living Exhibition’ and disappeared into the depths of the Library, never to be seen again!

The research team is especially keen to gather the everyday nitty-gritty of working life that often escapes an official history – the finer details of the portcullis system at the Calverley Street entrance, for instance, or specifics of changes to the building layout through the decades, and those after-hours staff parties that they’ve been told took place in the 1960s… If you have any memories to share, join the project team on Thursday 18th July for an informal reminiscence session to help get the ball rolling. Just pop into the Sanderson Room on the third floor of the Central Library anytime from 1 – 4pm, there will be a warm welcome, coffee and biscuits, and a chance to catch-up with friends and colleagues. Photos and other material will be on display to spark recollections. It’s a fantastic opportunity to contribute your memories to the history of a much-loved Leeds institution. Simon Day Wins Toastmasters’ Speech Contest Simon Day from Farnley outshone more than 800 other contestants to win the district-level competition of the Toastmasters International Speech Contest in Norwich. A member of Leeds City Toastmasters, he overcame fierce competition to win over the judges with his evaluation of a seven-minute speech by Samir Malik from London. Simon competed with five other regional winners who had already won their club, area, division and district semi-final competitions. Their evaluation speeches were judged on analytical quality, recommendations, technique and summation. “Five years ago, I was terrified of public speaking and could barely stand and speak”, said Simon.

Canal & River Trust Launches Waterways Plastics Challenge Canal & River Trust, the waterways and wellbeing charity that cares for 2,000 miles of canals and river navigations in England and Wales, is urging people to tackle the global plastics crisis – don’t drop it, pick it up, recycle it , and help make the nation’s canals and rivers plastics free.

Working with Coventry University, the charity has published a detailed analysis of the plastics and other litter found in its waterways. Plastics now account for 59% of waste found along its canals. It estimates that 570,000 items of plastic reach the world’s oceans each year via its waterways. “By taking care of our nineteen Yorkshire & North East waterways, which include Leeds & Liverpool Canal, everyone can have beauty on their doorstep”, said Peter Birch,

national environmental policy advisor at Canal & River Trust. “The Trust is on a mission to eradicate plastics from our vast network of canals and rivers – helping us all to live in better neighbourhoods, whilst tackling a global issue.” “Despite being vital green corridors in towns and cities, our waterways can inadvertently act as ‘plastics highways’, transporting rubbish out to sea.” (Around 80% of the plastics and litter found in our oceans comes from inland waste that passes through water-courses and out to sea.) “This is also a huge problem for wildlife and detracts from these important wellbeing places in our towns and cities. By taking action locally, they will also be helping tackle a global issue.”

The charity’s waterways in Yorkshire & the North East received over 49 million visits last year. The Trust is calling on visitors to help keep them clear of plastics, whether by picking up and recycling, joining the Trust’s growing band of volunteers, or even adopting a short stretch of canal with friends, neighbours or colleagues. It has also published a downloadable, free, family plastics and litter activity pack which highlights to children the importance of taking action to prevent it. Plastic and litter free canals are beautiful, inspiring places for people to enjoy, whilst also being hugely important habitats for some of the nation’s much loved and endangered species. Dorothy Koomson Tells Secrets at Leeds Trinity

Following the publication of her latest book ‘Tell Me Your Secret’, award-winning author Dorothy Koomson returns to Leeds to deliver a talk at Leeds Trinity University on Thursday 11th July from 7pm. The talk will explore her journey from university student to global bestselling author. In addition to readings from her new novel, she will also share her top tips for aspiring writers. Dorothy studied Psychology and Public Media at Leeds Trinity University from 1990-1993, later taking on the role of Vice-President of the Students’ Union. 62 Comes to Sunny Bank The 62 Group of textile artists will showcase a new exhibition on the theme ‘CONSTRUCT’ at Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley, from 20th July until 15th September. This international group of professional textile artists champions textiles as an artistic medium through an ambitious programme of exhibitions and education events.

Experience 100 days of sculpture with a brand-new festival From 22nd June to 29th September, materials as diverse as pollen, Styrofoam and painted bronze will land in the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle for a new festival – the Yorkshire Sculpture International.

Yorkshire Sculpture International is the UK’s largest dedicated sculpture festival, bringing together artists from across 12 countries including Ireland, Japan, Canada, Turkey and Korea. Four partner venues and an array of outdoor spaces in Leeds and Wakefield will be home to a diverse selection of sculpture for 100 days, featuring new commissions, solo shows and decade-spanning exhibitions. At the Henry Moore Institute, sculptors Rashid Johnson and Tamar Harpaz will present work looking at how our material culture is used to understand human behaviour. In the case of Johnson, that includes vast sculptures referencing his childhood and connection to black American cultural identity; expect steel structures replete with tropical plants, grow lights and a multitude of other pointedly-referential objects. Yorkshire Sculpture Park will host an exhibition of works from David Smith, an

abstract expressionist sculptor and the first US artist to work with welded metal. Over 40 sculptures from the 1930s to the 1960s will be on show. At The Hepworth Wakefield, largescale installations from Tau Lewis and Wolfgang Laib will take over the venue. Laib’s work is particularly interesting; using perishable organic materials, he creates sculptures with landscape-like qualities, painstakingly (and personally) installing them within the gallery. Rice, milk, brass and wood all feature – as does pollen, which Laib collects every year by hand from the fields near his home in Germany. Leeds Art Gallery will be showing displays from its collection as well as solo exhibitions and new commissions. The Japanese artist Nobuko Tsuchiya will have her first solo show at the Gallery during Yorkshire Sculpture International, populating the venue with robot-like, primitive assemblages constructed from household objects (such as table legs and plastic tubing) which are then cast into their final form.

Simon Armitage, the new Poet Laureate, will open the 2019 Ilkley Literature Festival with a reading from his new collection on Friday 4th October at the King's Hall, Ilkley. The Marsden-born poet has been a friend of the Festival for many years, first appearing in 1991 and since then becoming a regular feature on the programme. In 2012, then Festival Director Rachel Feldberg commissioned Simon to write six poems inspired by the language and landscape of the Pennine Watershed. The poems were carved onto stones across the upland by stone artist Pip Hall, forming the Stanza Stones Poetry Trail which runs from Marsden to Ilkley.

His latest collection, ‘Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic’, was published recently and features the Stanza Stone poems, along with other works from his many commissions and collaborations. In 2017 Armitage was appointed as the first Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds. Simon takes over from Carol Ann Duffy and follows in the footsteps of Ted Hughes, John Betjeman and William Wordsworth. The Laureateship is held for ten years and although there are no set requirements for the role, Laureates often write in response to national events.

Sponsored by the Elgar society, the programme features Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes and Elgar’s Songs from the Bavarian Highlands, as well as a selection of Strauss Waltzes arranged as four-part songs. Wagner’s Pilgrim’s Chorus and Borodin’s Prince Igor Choral Dance add another rousing twist to the programme. Pippa Hale to Create New Public Sculpture for Leeds The artist Pippa Hale was recently chosen to create a new public sculpture championing the achievements of women in Leeds. Her design, ‘Ribbons’, was chosen in response to a project aiming to redress the gender imbalance of public sculpture in an innovative way, celebrating the achievements of the women of Leeds. “It’s a huge honour to create a new art work for my home city”, said Pippa, “and in such a prestigious location too! The work will be a timely addition to the city’s sculpture, putting women centre stage, be they historical figures or the unsung heroes of today.” Pippa is a contemporary artist based in Leeds whose practice centres around social history and geography. Her work is often site-specific and is always led by a theme and its location. Outcomes include large-scale installations in heritage venues and public areas in a range of media, including film, sound, large constructions, neon, and found or loaned objects. https://pippahale. com Four artists were shortlisted (Briony Marshall, Pippa Hale, Wendy Briggs, and Zsófia Jakab), who all had the opportunity to exhibit models of their proposed designs at the Blenheim Walk Gallery at Leeds Arts University. ‘Ribbons’ will be located between Leeds City College’s new Quarry Hill Campus and the redeveloped Leeds Playhouse. The sculpture will be sited prominently at the top of a green landscaped, tiered public space visible from Eastgate and The Headrow. This is a joint project developed by Rachel Reeves in partnership with Leeds City Council and Leeds Arts University. Supporters of the project include Leeds City College, LeedsBID (Leeds Business Improvement District) and Caddick Developments. The exhibition at Leeds Arts University will remain open until Thursday 4th July, giving people the chance to see the work of the four shortlisted artists, alongside work from other cities to highlight the broader context for women’s visibility in the public realm across the UK. A Showcase of Original Scripts at Seven Arts Leeds Actors in Training (LAIT) and students from the University of Leeds’ MA Writing for Performance and Production course have teamed up to present a showcase of four original scripts inspired by the theme ‘Truth’ on Thursday 4th/Friday 5th July, 7.30pm at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton. Playwrights Charlotte Dalrymple, Tilly Devine, Ben Erwin and Karen Richardson were selected to work with LAIT through Leeds Grand Theatre’s Grand Writers’ Platform – a new opportunity for early-career playwrights to respond to a brief and have their scripts workshopped and produced by a professional creative team. “Getting the green light to direct the LAIT students for a second time was made even better when it was confirmed that we would be collaborating with Leeds University MA Writers for Performance and Publication students”, said Lizi Patch, LAIT’s Artistic Director. “It’s the perfect springboard for both actors and writers at the beginning of their careers.

Dalrymple’s ‘Chop Wood, Carry Water’ is inspired by real life events that humorously take on anti-natalism and the ability to sue your own parents; ‘Nine’, by Tilly Devine, unveils the connections between four strangers in a punchy spoken word piece; Erwin’s ‘By the Tree Stump’ reveals what happens between two best friends when one of them discloses the truth about their identity; and, ‘We’ll Meet Again’ by Richardson is a piece of science fiction exploring her family’s experience of Alzheimer’s. Now in its second year, LAIT is a studio-based programme for emerging artists aged 18-25, run in collaboration with Leeds Grand Theatre . to Raise Funds for New Wheelchair Leeds event agency, First Event, is hosting a 24-hour spin challenge to raise money for 11 year old Jack, who is suffering from Microcephaly, a condition stunting the development of the brain. Ahead of the Tour De France, they aim to rack up 480 miles on two spin bikes to raise funds for a muchneeded new wheelchair.

Age Friendly Leeds aims to make Leeds a city where people of all ages can actively participate in community life, helping them to stay healthy, active and connected, no matter how old. The Age Friendly Steering Group is one way older people are involved by guiding the project through their experiences, feedback and ideas. The group meets monthly to share their experience of life as an older person and come up with ways to make things better. Although the group already includes a wide range of people from different walks of life, it would like more older people to join. It is important that the group represents the diverse communities of Leeds. They would particularly welcome people from the South and East of the city – people who could speak up about the poverty faced by some older people, older disabled people and people from Black and Minority Ethnic communities. Of course, any older person (over 50) who is willing to give some time to help the project would be welcome.

The Age Friendly Steering Group is part of the Friendly Communities project, which brings together Dementia Friendly and Age Friendly initiatives to help make Leeds the ‘Best City to Grow Old In’. Friendly Communities is led by Leeds Older People’s Forum, in partnership with Leeds City Council alongside other local and national partners. It is part of the Time to Shine programme which aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness amongst older people. The Age Friendly Steering Group meetings are held in the Denny Room at Leeds City Museum, Millennium Square (1.30 – 3pm). The ‘Pimp Jack’s Ride!’ event takes place on Wednesday 3rd July and was initiated by Jack’s aunt, First Event’s Charlotte Jackson. “Jack has never had a prescribed wheelchair”, said Charlotte. “As a family, we have purchased Jack’s chairs, getting what - at the time - we thought was right. A recent assessment showed that Jack’s chair was too small for him and he needs something bigger and more suited to his needs. The new chair will have a motor, which will make a massive change to Jack’s comfort and also make it much easier for us when going up hills and over rough terrain.” Local businesses will also be taking part, including DW Fitness Yeadon, who will be providing spin bikes. CommunityNews Meanwood’s WW1 project comes full circle

For 50 Years PHAB members have enjoyed their Friday PHAB Club, residentials and outings. They currently have some places available - for both disabled and able-bodied members to join the Club.

The culmination of ten years work by the Meanwood Village Association to honour the men from Meanwood who died in the Great War has come full circle with the publication of a book on Major Walter Rowley VDDL FGS, a great benefactor to Meanwood and Leeds and a prominent local resident at the time.

Leeds PHAB Club, which meets at the Prince Philip Centre on Scott Hall Avenue LS7, is a lively organisation that inspires and supports both children and adults with and without disabilities, offering social activities and holidays that members can enjoy together promoting friendship and independence.

Major Rowley donated the Meanwood War Memorial to the parish in 1922. The Memorial was professionally restored in 2009, and re-dedicated in December that year by the Bishop of Ripon. Cynthia Ruston was instrumental in driving the project and in 2014, to mark the Centenary of the start of WW1, the Association was awarded Heritage Lottery Funding to add a plaque to the Memorial inscribed with the names of the 48 men who died during that war. A Memorial Avenue of oak saplings was planted in Meanwood Park, one for each soldier, and a book, 'Meanwood Men', researched and written by Cynthia was published. “The Great War changed Meanwood forever”, said Cynthia, “not least for the families who had to pick up the pieces. It’s important we remember their sacrifice and the impact it had.” In 2016 the MVA staged an event in Meanwood Park to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. Then last year, as part of the centenary of the end of WW1, a series of commemorative events entitled ‘From the Trenches to the 21st Century’ took place in the run up to Remembrance Day. This project received funding from the Heritage Lottery ‘Then and Now’ programme’, which also involved collecting oral history and researching

the life of Major Walter Rowley. This culminated in the book on his life. Walter Rowley moved to Meanwood with his wife Mary in 1879. During his life, he rose to the rank of Major in the Leeds Engineer Volunteers. He was a pioneer of ambulance work, setting up the Leeds Centre of St John Ambulance Association. He was an influential mining engineer, widely lecturing on the subject and became Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding. Walter and Mary adopted Mary’s nephews at a very young age following their parent’s death. The younger boy Francis was killed in action in 1918. His name is listed on the War Memorial – his tribute to his adopted son. The books, ‘Meanwood Men’ and ‘Major Walter Rowley of Meanwood’ by Cynthia Ruston are available through meanwoodvillageassociation.co.uk priced at £5 and £3.50 respectively.

The club is also looking for reliable, voluntary minibus drivers, whose role will be to drive PHAB vehicles, collect members from their homes across Leeds and take them to the Prince Philip Centre for the Friday PHAB Club and on outings etc. Volunteers must be fit and healthy, with a clean licence and aged between 25 and 70. PHAB requires two referees and will organise DBS and training in safe-guarding, MIDAS and basic first aid. Hollybush Celebrates 40 Years by Gathering Stories The Friends of Hollybush recently secured a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £10,000 for their project ‘Hippies, Dole Claimants and their Heritage: Hollybush 1979-2019 in 40 stories’. The project will collect and celebrate memories and stories from some of the many volunteers, staff and visitors who have been part of this environmental volunteering centre’s story. Hollybush volunteers will be busy online and at Hollybush and other local events to engage people in the project. Working with a professional heritage worker, they will gather stories, record oral histories and create a digital archive of photographs – all of which will paint a picture of the rich and varied past behind today’s Hollybush Centre. CommunityNews Counselling Charity Needs Help Anyone who has been in the position of needing counselling knows that it’s either expensive or there’s a long waiting list. Pathways Counselling offers counselling for all – the cost of sessions is whatever is affordable to the client. Each session costs £40 and clients can choose to pay the full amount, less, or more, if possible, which helps to support others.

This model has proved to be successful, but without additional funds the charity may have to stop offering reduced rates at the end of the financial year. Since September 2018, it has been funded by Moortown Baptist Church (where it is based) but this funding is due to end soon. Even with full fees being paid, more funding is needed to ensure the charity can continue to offer its invaluable service. Counselling can have a profound effect. Often, what seem insurmountable problems can be overcome, or coping strategies can provide the tools needed to live without anxiety or depression. Counselling can help with relationship problems, abuse, bereavement, pregnancy loss, depression, anxiety and much more. Each week clients have 50 minutes of undisturbed time in which to discuss the issues that are troubling them.

Pathways hope that individuals or businesses will be able to donate on a regular basis to ensure that they are able to continue to offer this vital service in Leeds. Huge thanks to the residents – not just from Alwoodley, but from right across the North Leeds Life community, who took the time to email and call me with their thoughts about the sporting events that come to our part of Leeds and the impact they have. For the most part residents were hugely supportive of the events and didn’t mind the inconvenience that they caused. However, many did think that the Council could do a better job of letting us know what the actual impact of the events might be – rather than overstating how long roads will be affected for. I will ensure that this is passed on to those responsible. The big hope for July is that we see an

improvement in the weather! A rainy Father’s Day meant the Brass Band on the Village Green was slightly damper than planned – but still good fun but, for sure, we’re ready for some sun. We need a dry day on Saturday 6th July for this year’s Moor Allerton Festival on Alwoodley Playing Fields, organised by Moortown West Residents’ Association, an event for the whole family from 1 – 5pm. The other big event in July is, of course, school holidays. The roads are quieter, parking outside schools becomes a delight, and parents and carers all have the same refrain – “What are we going to do with them for the next five or six weeks?” One suggestion is to visit the Breeze Website (breezeleeds.org). Breeze is Leeds City Council’s youth activity programme and throughout the summer there is a packed programme, definitely worth checking out. They will have a stall at this year’s Moor Allerton Festival so you can get more information. From 20th – 30th July, the Great Yorkshire Showground is hosting another Indoor

Funfair, where you can get unlimited rides for a three-hour session, morning or afternoon. And, on the morning of Monday 22nd July, they are holding an Autism Friendly Session where the rides will be more accessible for those with sensory needs. More details at Indoorfunfair.org. I went along to their last event and it was really a fun morning. Finally, I have had a number of emails asking about the 20 mph speed limits that were supposed to have been introduced to the West of the A61 at the end of April. I chased this and received a somewhat complex and convoluted explanation for the delay. The upshot of it is that by the end of August the highways team is certain it will have implemented the reduced speed limits – we shall see. CommunityNews Dealing with Rogue Traders and Cold Callers! With Summer in full bloom, rogue traders and cold callers are out in force! Particularly at risk are the elderly, women on their own, people who have recently suffered bereavement and vulnerable individuals The North Leeds suburbs are very attractive areas for cold callers. They start their calls early in the morning, often driving around hoping to catch people in their gardens, or on their drives. Typical projects include driveway re-laying or cleaning, tree pruning, gutter cleaning, roof work etc. generally external projects and often vastly overpriced. They might:

•

Say they are working for a neighbour and offer work at a discount.

•

Start agreed work, then escalate the price as the job progresses.

•

Offer to drive customers to banks to withdraw cash.

•

Offer maintenance advice, then quote to do the jobs.

•

Offer discounts if they do the job there and then.

•

Say they are reformed criminals selling goods as part of a probation service initiative.

•

Claim to be officials and try to gain entry to your property.

2. If approached in your garden, simply say that you do not deal with unsolicited traders and ask them to leave. Reputable tradesmen do not generally cold call. 3. If you require work to be done, seek at least three quotations from trusted or recommended traders. These can be found via a local authority Assured Trader scheme, or the government Trust Mark scheme. Always check the trader, even if they have done work for a neighbour. Check references, look up any trade associations or contact details. Be aware that vans may not carry the correct details. 4. Look out for your neighbours, if you see unfamiliar people repeatedly visiting, please check they are ok. These visits can happen in very quick succession and you could prevent them losing a lot of money. 5. Only let callers into your house who have made a prior appointment at your request and check their identity before allowing them in. 6. If someone asks for help, offers a sob story, or even asks to use your toilet, do not allow them in. 7. Use a key chain before opening the door. 8. Establish a Cold Call Control Zone. Trading Standards will help you do this. This is very effective and helps the entire street. A street in Alwoodley has done this and feedback since its formation six months ago is that there have been zero cold calls.

How to Stop This 1. Put up an anti-cold call poster in clear sight. If they persist, call the Police on 101 and Trading Standards on 03454 040 506.

Do not deal with cold callers. They are skilled manipulators. Report such approaches to the Police or Trading Standards. Basically, play safe and you won’t be sorry!

The largest common water bird to be seen in the UK, the Grey Heron is unmistakeable with its long legs, long neck and dagger-like bill. Its plumage is mainly grey, black and white, with a black crown and a wispy black crest. It can often be seen patiently watching for prey at the edges of bodies of water, or on river banks, its head resting between its shoulders in a ‘hunched’ posture. When stalking prey, mainly fish but also eels and crabs in coastal areas, it stretches its neck out and walks very stealthily, holding itself poised to strike. Herons have been known to visit gardens, especially those with ponds containing fish or frogs. They are mainly solitary birds, although groups of them can be seen on occasion. They do, however, breed in colonies, called ‘heronries’, building their nests of sticks at the tops of trees, 25 to 40 metres off the ground. Both parents build the nest, the male bringing material and the female constructing the nest. Three to four eggs are laid, and the young birds fly from the nest at around 50 days old.

Friends of Roundhay Park Launch Outdoor Events for Young People Friends of Roundhay Park (FORP) recently launched a trial programme of events to inspire young people to love and protect Roundhay Park. Having conducted a survey of a thousand local families, the results showed strong support for activities that encouraged children to explore and learn about nature and the great outdoors. Young people can join FORP litter picks and working parties and take part in Forest Craft Workshops and Forest Schools. The programme is called ‘Little Friends’ and will be run by qualified external providers on behalf of FORP. Forest Schools have been organised for 13th July and 4th August, with a Clay Critters and Leaf Prints workshop on 8th August.

York Gate Garden Seeks Volunteers York Gate Garden on Back Church Lane in Adel has been awarded a TripAdvisor 2019 Certificate of Excellence. With visitor numbers on the increase, staff at York Gate are calling for more volunteers from the local community to help in the shop and tea room. Owned and managed by Perennial, the charity that helps people in horticulture, volunteers play a crucial role in supporting Perennial by helping raise awareness and generating income. The TripAdvisor certificate recognises the garden’s consistently high standards that head gardener Ben Preston and his team work so hard to maintain. Mackenzie Thorpe Unveils Artwork for Welcome to Yorkshire’s Winning Chelsea Garden Mackenzie Thorpe recently unveiled his painting for the 2019 Welcome to Yorkshire garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. ‘Under the Moon and Stars’ was inspired by Mark Gregory’s Gold Medal winning design which celebrates Yorkshire’s rich industrial heritage and the beauty of its canals and waterways. The evocative scene shows an adult and child standing under a moonlit sky, in a field of wildflowers, beside a canal, looking out to the hills in the distance. The garden was created in partnership with the Canal & River Trust and featured an authentically built canal, complete with genuine lock gates from Huddersfield Narrow Canal. It also included a towpath, a lock keeper’s lodge with a colourful garden and vegetable patch. “As an artist and a Yorkshireman, the whole county is a never-ending source of inspiration”, said Mackenzie Thorpe. “Every season brings something different and when the flowers bloom it adds an extra dimension. I was really pleased to see the lock and canal incorporated into the garden design, acknowledging Yorkshire’s industrial heritage, which adds to the natural beauty of our countryside. It was my task to try and incorporate it all in one single painting!

“I imagined being in that landscape, on the edge of a canal, standing under the moon and stars, taking in the peace and beauty of a summer’s evening, surrounded by the scent of a glorious balmy Yorkshire and reflecting on how wonderful life can be.”

Advice given to aspirational pianist Reginald Dwight — the shy, spectacled kid from Middlesex who would become acerbic peacock of the keys, Elton John. Following the global sensation of Bohemian Rhapsody, Elton is the latest Seventies star to receive a big screen biography and the vision comes from Dexter Fletcher — director of last year’s $1 billion Queen cash cow. Rocketman is billed as a bio-fantasy musical, reviving Elton John’s discography to retell his journey from awkward outsider to breakout musician and bon vivant. Exploring struggles with sexuality, drug addiction, fame, fortune and love within the excesses of the era, it’s hard to ignore some strong thematic similarities with the Freddie Mercury narrative. But Rocketman’s approach provides an altogether more even-handed and thoughtful film. Dexter Fletcher rescued the partially botched Bohemian Rhapsody from another director, whilst Rocketman has been nurtured from conception as his own project with bolder, braver aspirations. It’s a high-concept and knowingly theatrical musical; seamlessly matching hit numbers to drama and transposing iconic lyrics into dialogue. There’s also a fantastic scope to the choreography with a camp surrealism framing the tale — such as when Elton dances his way through a bar brawl into a fun fair, or submerges in a swimming pool to encounter an infant version of himself on piano. These are metaphysical tricks often toyed with in stage musicals, and it’s just a matter of time before we can expect Rocketman – The Musical to appear on the West End. In terms of storytelling, there’s a brutal honesty in the depiction of its leading man. Excessive drugs and sex — something Queen steam-cleaned from their script to secure a familyfriendly certification — is uncensored and laid bare. This is perhaps all the more surprising considering Elton

John approved the content, but may also go some way to explain why his extreme behaviour is almost always justified by the negative influence of those around him. Somehow that doesn’t ring entirely true, despite some convincing performances. Taron Egerton’s study of Elton John is an award-winning portrayal which is sung-through in his own voice. There’s no vamping of vintage studio recordings here; Egerton carries the entire show as a West End lead and whilst his vocals don’t stand a forensic comparison, there’s an honest continuity in the performance as it transitions from dialogue into song. This is not an imitation, rather a full-blown, immersive recreation from top to toe. Supporting performances feel less lively. Bernie Taupin, the silent lyricist behind some of Elton’s most famous numbers, is brought to screen in an urbane performance from Jamie Bell. It’s a solid if subordinate bolt-on who shoulders up against a number of other younger chaps, such as Elton’s hip manager Ray Williams. Family ties are realised in rather critical performances from Bryce Dallas Howard and Steven Mackintosh as Elton’s folks, though Gemma Jones as his grandmother escapes as a more positive influence. Unfortunately, Elton’s short-term wife, Renate, is gifted less than five minutes of screen time. Then there’s manager John Reid, who appeared in a less than complimentary light in Bohemian Rhapsody. Revived

in a brilliant performance from Richard Madden, his character suffers a near nuclear assassination as a manipulative and ferocious intimidator. There are tales of Reid’s fiery temper, yet testimony promotes a healthy relationship with Queen. His professional connection with Elton John also reached to the end of the Nineties — facts which Rocketman telescopes into less than a decade. Perhaps every fantasy needs a villain, and we’re served an arch one in the shape of John Reid, who becomes whatever the plot needs him to be. In the mind of the public, Fletcher’s depictions are likely to be Reid’s lasting legacy, and you can’t help but wonder how he must feel about that. Perhaps he’s too busy counting his residuals, as the film implies. Facts aside, Rocketman is a glittering extravaganza of a movie musical. A grand arrangement from Matthew Margeson expands a playlist of celebrated numbers with an orchestral scale, whilst a wealth of colour in costume and production design captures the flamboyance of the era. In the end, it’s a bombastic awareness-raising campaign for Elton John’s superlative catalogue, if not a slightly fanciful and painful study of a complex and beguiling performer.

Leeds Jazz Festival – Four Whole Days of Cool Jazz + Fringe Events Leeds Jazz Festival started out in 2017 with just one pop-up event in Millennium Square. In two short years, the festival, which runs from 18th to 21st July, has become a major four-day event, attracting thousands of people, and a week-long, buildup fringe festival. There will be over 30 performances – from established, jazz greats to emerging talent. And, this year, the festival has received Arts Council funding – cementing the fact that jazz isn’t just a niche music genre, but a scene that touches all ages, genders and communities.

Curated by Leeds Jazz in partnership with Leeds College of Music, the main venues are Leeds College of Music and the Wardrobe, with fringe events taking place at venues throughout the city the week before.

Rock ‘n’ Rumble Cutting through the Leeds music scene rough and tumble, guitar and drums are making it rumble. Rumble began in the way all the best music projects do – a handful of friends wanting to listen to the music they like more often. After a few DIY nights El Nico decided to put a name to his work with Seany Boodwah and in 2017 ‘Rumble’ was born, named after the first instrumental song to be banned on the radio (by Link Wray 1958). Alongside these two regulars are more supporters, volunteers, friends and well-wishers than you could shake a stick at creating a lively, loud and sweaty rockabilly, garage and punk scene. They now play host to touring bands from around the world. It’s not the international acts that they’re most proud of though. “When people I’ve never met before turn up, or just music fans wanting to give an unknown band a try, it gives me faith that there are

people out there that like cool stuff and will support it”, said El Nico. “The fact that people are also up for dedicating time to helping out with promoting the events is really cool. There is a lot of competition in Leeds, as there are amazing events on every night of the week. We will always be battling that, but we do pretty well with attendance and when new faces turn up to the night we know we’re doing something right.” Rumble have a full year planned out. Their next event is Leadfoot Tea, a ‘One-man Garage Trash Band’ from Sweden (venue to be confirmed), and of course the annual Halloween party is still to come (the best Halloween parties in town!), as well as a new compilation of some of their favourite music and a documentary called ‘Cats, Wolves & Howlin Rock N Roll’.

Light Up Leeds Night Walk

Type NHS Blood & Transplant at Leeds Donor Centre is calling for more donors with the rare blood type Ro Kell negative, which is in growing demand. New figures show that the Leeds stock holding unit has had an 167% increase in demand since 2015/16. Anyone can have this blood type, but black people are ten times more likely to have it. Existing donors with Ro Kell negative blood are being urged to talk to family members about donation as they may share this rare combination.

St Gemma’s Hospice is introducing a new night-time sponsored walk, Light Up Leeds, and would like you to get involved on Saturday 28th September to Light Up the city. Starting at 7.30pm walkers can enjoy an evening with stalls, music and refreshments before setting off at 9pm. There is a choice of six- or 12-mile routes starting from Headingley. Both are suitable for all abilities and include a stop at St Gemma’s Hospice, where walkers can enjoy refreshments and visit the light garden. And, this year, each walker will carry a lantern to help them Light Up Leeds. “We are so grateful for the support of the Leeds community”, said Emma Heslington, Events Fundraiser. “We couldn’t do what we do without you. Seeing hundreds of people walking together to Light Up the city is going to be amazing. There are only 260 donors with Ro Kell negative blood at the Leeds Donor Centre on The Headrow. NHSBT aims to recruit 120 more black blood donors over the next year to ensure that seriously ill patients get the blood they need. Ro Kell negative is especially important for treating the rare, inherited condition sickle cell disease. Patients in Leeds with sickle cell disease are being given regular full body blood transfusions, known as red cell exchanges. Previously, patients received intermittent ‘top ups’ but many are now recognised as benefitting from regular red cell changes, however these require a lot more blood. Cubs Encouraged to Get Involved in Environmental Conservation Cub Scouts in Yorkshire are being encouraged to go eco as part of a newly revised badge to teach children the importance of getting involved in environmental conservation. The Environmental Conservation Activity badge is sponsored by The Salvation Army’s ‘Recycle with Michael’ initiative - which works with children to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothing and shoes away from landfill. The badge was recently launched when 50 Cub Scouts worked with professional artists, Lloyd Warbey (Disney’s Art Attack) and Suzanne Lynas, to create a gigantic replica of the badge, using only recycled materials.

“This partnership not only encourages our next generation to take responsibility for their environmental actions, it also helps to support the work of The Salvation Army, which provides practical and emotional support to vulnerable people”, said Kirk Bradley, Head of Corporate Partnerships at The Salvation Army. “We live in a throwaway world where cheap fashion, plastic, food waste and packaging are destroying our planet. If the Cub Scout movement can engage children in conservation efforts, and they encourage parents, siblings and peers to do the same, we will be on the pathway to change.” Environmental conservation plays a vital role in the Cub Scouts movement. Youngsters wishing to obtain this badge must undertake activities across a broad spectrum of climate change subjects such as: actively reducing energy and water usage, studying renewable energy alternatives, and practicing responsible food/home waste recycling. They must also complete various projects including planting a tree, tidying waste land, picking litter, and making a natural bird feeder. Awards Recognise Student Entrepreneurs Success LEAP (Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme) provides students aged 14-19 with real life business experience and holds an annual awards ceremony, this year hosted by The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), to celebrate their achievements. There were 19 companies from four schools taking part - Bradford Girls’ Grammar School, Co-op Academy Priesthorpe, Woodhouse Grove School and GSAL. Student teams set up their own companies, taking responsibility for raising share capital and writing a business plan, sourcing and marketing a product. They presented their company results, annual

report and accounts to a panel of business advisors. Throughout the process they have access to mentoring and advice from LEAP on the different aspects of running a business. The winner of the coveted Best LEAP Enterprise Company 2019 was The Snug Cartel, a team of eight Y12 students from GSAL. The Snug Cartel achieved profits of well over £1,000 by selling a range of branded sweatshirts in colours designed to appeal to female and male tastes.

At the awards, the guests heard from Josh Robson, assistant product manager at L’Oreal, who had his first taste of business through LEAP when he was a student at Allerton High School. “I learned so much from LEAP”, he said. “It showed me that my future studies and career would be in business. You can build on this experience - you’ve set up your own company and learned so many skills that will get you places.” LEAP is a not for profit organisation and is run by volunteer trustees, judges and mentors, who give their time so that students can learn from their experience in business.

Scalakids Stage Fantastic Show for Martin House At the end of last month, the children from Yorkshire’s wellestablished stage school Scalakids put on their annual show to raise money for Martin House Children’s Hospice. Each year the team at Scalakids creates an entirely new show in just four days, including casting, costuming and rehearsals. The show, entitled ‘The Magic of Musicals’ was performed on 31st May and 1st June at Yeadon Town Hall and every level of the school was represented: Scala Babes, Scala Juniors and Scala Seniors. Organised by principal Lynne Walker, director Louise Denison and musical director Jim Lunt, a huge range of musical genres and decades were covered. Tiny Tots sang ‘Under the Sea’ from the Disney musical The Little Mermaid and performed ‘Rainbow Connection’, the Muppets classic originally sung by Kermit the Frog. Scala Juniors covered songs from Mary Poppins and Aladdin, followed by a team up with the eldest of the Scalakids to perform classic Motown hits including ‘Dancing in the Street’ and a selection of pieces from Andrew Lloyd Weber

musicals. The Scala Seniors sang works from Legally Blonde and Oklahoma. Many of the performers took on complex solos, including ‘Almost There’ from Disney’s The Princess and The Frog (sung by Amy), ‘Let it Go’ from Disney’s Frozen (sung by Sophia) and ‘With One Look’ from Sunset Boulevard (sung by Eleanor). Since their first charity show, Scalakids have raised over £55,000 for Martin House Children’s Hospice. The school, established over 40 years ago by Lynne Walker, is based in Horsforth and provides dance, drama and singing classes for children of all ages, as well as a professional children’s casting agency for film and TV

Councillor Eileen Taylor performed her first official engagement as Lord Mayor of Leeds when she presented the prizes at the recent Leeds Inter-School Youth Cup. Hosted at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), the tournament saw Year 5 and 6 pupils from ten Leeds primary schools compete for two trophies – the cup or ‘Champions League’ and the plate or ‘Europa League’. St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School triumphed in the ‘Champions League’ winning their final 3-0 against St Peter’s Church of England Primary. “I may be new to this, but I’m not new to football”, said Cllr Taylor. “It unites everyone and you make new friends, while it gives you great energy and keeps you active.”

The defending champions, St Paul’s Catholic Primary, were definitely in it to win it again, but had to settle for the ‘Europa League’ title, winning the final against Wykebeck Primary School. The Leeds Inter-School Youth Cup was set up in 2018 by a group of football loving volunteers who saw the game’s potential to bring people together. “We aim to use the tournament to teach young people the value of teamwork, provide an opportunity for them to build friendships with children from other backgrounds, schools and communities, improve mental health and, most importantly, to have fun!”, said Organiser Sam Leigh. Younger Life Roundhay School Wins National Award for Performance Roundhay School was recently recognised nationally for its excellent results in 2018, based on data from the Department for Education and Ofsted, analysed by the Schools, Students & Teachers network (SSAT). Allerton Primary Takes to the Track at Leeds Beckett Having previously joined forces on several art and literacy projects, the pupils of Allerton C of E Primary School in Moortown and Leeds Beckett University were already firm friends. That’s why when the offer came to hold the school’s Key Stage 2 Sports Day at the University’s Headingley campus, Head teacher Helen Stott just couldn’t say no! More than two hundred children competed on the state-of-the-art running track.

“The reaction of the children, when they first saw the facility was incredible”, said Helen Scott. “Throughout the day, whether it was on the track or in the field, their teamwork, competitive spirit and focus were amazing.” With running events from 50 to 400 meters and field events ranging from long jump to sack race, the school’s four houses: Birkdale, Sunningdale, Turnberry and Wentworth competed as if Beckett Park was an Olympic venue. Whether or not any of the school’s current pupils will follow in the footsteps of Olympic hero Dame Kelly Holmes, who holds an Honorary Doctorate in Sport Science from the university, or triathlete Alistair Brownlee, remains to be seen.
