Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Dr Kirsten Hall

PROFESSOR LASZLO LORAND (1923 - 2018) Biochemist One Sunday afternoon in December 1948, a Hungarian medical student called Laszlo Lorand made a bold decision that would change his life – and probably broke his heart. Saying farewell to his fiancée and widowed mother in Budapest, he stepped aboard a train bound for Vienna and embarked on an epic journey that would eventually bring him to Leeds.

It was Lorand's passion for science that brought him to Leeds. During the previous Summer, he had been invited by the internationally renowned physicist William Astbury to visit his new department at the University of Leeds. Astbury was pioneering a new science called 'molecular biology' which used X-rays to study the shape of giant molecules found in living systems. For a young researcher like Lorand, the opportunity to work with such an eminent figure was too good to be missed – but his enthusiasm was not shared by his political masters in Hungary. In those early days of the Cold War, the prospect of a promising young scientist travelling to the West and falling under its influence was not one that was welcomed by the Communist authorities. As a result, Lorand was informed that he would not be allowed to travel to Leeds and his passport was to be cancelled. Having narrowly escaped deportation to Auschwitz where his father was murdered during the Nazi occupation of Hungary, Lorand was not willing to suffer under yet another totalitarian regime. Fleeing Hungary, he arrived in Leeds in January 1949 carrying only a suitcase that his mother, having heard of food shortages in Britain, had stuffed with roast goose and salami. Post war austerity had also taken its toll on his new working conditions. Astbury may have hoped that his new department would be at the cutting edge of molecular biology, but the reality was very different. The laboratories were housed in a converted residential property that was

plagued with an unreliable electricity supply and prone to flooding. Under these far from ideal conditions, Lorand began to study how blood clots form using material collected from either a local abbatoir or the Red Cross and then brought back in a bottle clutched tightly to his chest so as not to spill it on the tram ride home. But perhaps one of the greatest challenges Lorand faced was when the Hungarian authorities demanded that he return. Astbury came to Lorand's defence arguing that his work was too important for him to return, saying: “As far as I can see, the only ‘crime’ that Lorand has committed is that he was rash enough to leave Hungary to work in this University and has therefore fallen under the bane of Western influences. In these days, as you know, that can be sufficient to damn anyone from the Eastern European countries, and it appears that it has indeed been sufficient to damn Lorand.” Thanks to Astbury's intervention, Lorand was allowed to remain in Leeds to study for a PhD - and the decision proved to be a wise one. He made a major discovery about the formation of blood clots which has been of huge medical significance and was the beginning of an illustrious and distinguished career in this field. After leaving Leeds in 1953 he went to the USA where he received numerous honours and was a Professor at Northwestern University until his death in December 2018.

LPLS Unveils Plaque for Headingley Heroes of Science On 11th June, the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society (LPLS) will unveil a new plaque to commemorate two scientists whose work revolutionised biology and medicine. In 1941, whilst working in a converted stable at the Wool Industries Research Association on Headingley Lane, Archer Martin and Richard Synge developed a ground breaking new method of separating chemicals called amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Although invented for the analysis of wool fibres, the impact of Martin and Synge's method went much further than the textile industries of West Yorkshire. It allowed scientists to

unravel the chemical structure of medically important proteins such as insulin and was crucial to revealing the secret of how DNA carries genetic information. In recognition of their achievement, Martin and Synge were awarded the 1952 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. As it celebrates the bicentenary of its founding in 1819, Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society is delighted to honour this important achievement for the city.

Kersten will give a talk about the life and work of Martin and Synge to the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society on 13th June, 7.30pm at University House. All welcome. Further information is available from www.leedsphilandlit.org.uk

Grease is the Word at The Grand ‘Grease’, described as the world’s best-loved musical, is coming to Leeds Grand Theatre from 19th June – 20th July and I think we are all going to be genuinely WOWed! The show stars Dan Partridge as Danny Zucco, Martha Kirby as Sandy and Peter Andre as Teen Angel. Dan most recently played Rum Tum Tugger in Cats (International Tour), Link in Hairspray (UK Tour) and Pepper in Mamma Mia! (Novello Theatre). Martha is making her professional debut and she is amazing! At the launch of the UK tour at City Varieties Music Hall, they treated us to a couple of numbers from the show and Peter, who hadn’t expected to sing, couldn’t resist breaking into

a little acapella rendition of Bill Withers’ ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ – we were blown away!

Pictured: Dan Partridge, Arlene

What we have in this trio is a Grease fan club! They all really love the show and have previously performed in it…apart from Peter. But now he is a happy man! Having grown up with Grease, dressed like Danny and seen the show (stage and cinema) 30 – 40 times he finally gets the chance to be part of it! He was approached some years ago to be Danny but couldn’t do it due to commitments. Now, he is in his element. Despite not being able to commit to every show on the tour, he grabbed the opportunity to be Teen Angel. We did wonder if the lyrics of Peter’s song really fit with his nice guy image…after all he’s really mean to Frenchie in ‘Beauty School Drop Out’. “It’s the perfect song”, he said. “It’s a bit cheeky, which suits me very well. And, really, it’s just the kind of

advice I give my kids and my father gave me – if you’re aiming for the top of the mountain you don’t get there without effort!” Of course, Peter’s career has certainly been varied – from opening for Madonna 25 years ago to pop idol, braving the jungle and taking the Strictly challenge – where he made it to week ten, loved Latin but struggled a bit with

The show is directed by Nikolai Foster, no stranger to Leeds. According to producer Colin Ingram, it is presented in a new, exciting way – it’s ‘fresh, relevant, vibrant, young and edgier’. There are new songs (also written by Jacobs & Casey but not included previously). Arlene Phillips has refreshed and updated the choreography. It is a timeless story that works for all generations. Yes, there’s a touch of nostalgia and escapism, but it is so much more than that. And it’s full of great songs – ‘Summer Nights’, ‘Greased Lightnin’, ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’, ‘You’re the One That I Want’, all propelled to fresh, dizzying heights. Peter Andre is scheduled to perform 19 – 22 June, 26 – 28 Jun and 17 – 20 July.

Opera North Presents Byrd-Cage in The Tiled Hall

Would You Adam & Eve It? – Ninety Chapters in Ninety Minutes!

The show ‘Would You Adam & Eve It?’ is what happens if you tell two guys who like to make people laugh to dramatise all 90 chapters from the first two books of the Bible in just 90 minutes!

As part of Yorkshire Sculpture International, Opera North’s 36-voice chorus will present ‘Byrd-Cage’ in Leeds Art Gallery’s Tiled Hall on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th June at 7.30 and 9pm. Byrd-Cage is a wide-ranging programme of vocal music chosen to explore the ability of sound to transform and affect space. Bringing together the early polyphony of Byrd and Gabrieli with the 20th and 21stcentury minimalism of John Cage and Arvo Pärt, the performances promise an immersion in the sculptural power and enduring mystery of the human voice. At the heart of the concerts is an excerpt from the revolutionary 1970 work ‘The Great Learning’, by the British composer Cornelius Cardew. Each singer chooses a pitch to begin, and sings the first line softly eight times, each time for the length

Explore the ability of sound to transform and affect space explore the ability of sound to transform and affect space of a breath. Then they move around the space, listening to the other singers until they hear a new pitch of their choice, at which time they sing the second line five times on that pitch. The ensemble progresses through the piece this way, as a cloud of pitches gradually forms into several clusters. The audience moves through the space along with the singers, creating an ever-changing experience in space and sound. Tickets (£10) are available from Opera North Box Office on 0113 2233600 or online at operanorth.co.uk

With a few strategic speedy bits to help it achieve a 90-minute running time, it has amazed audiences around the world for the last nine years – including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it received Five Stars. Performed by Searchlight Theatre, it is being presented by Slung Low Theatre Company and the Holbeck Christian Fellowship at The Holbeck, Jenkinson Lawn, LS11 9QX, on 21st June at 7.15pm and is suitable for anyone aged over nine. As with all Slung Low events, the price is pay-what-you-decide. However, please book tickets via www.slunglow.org/events/ would-you-adam-and-eve-it so they know how many people are coming.

Help to Restore a Remarkable Collective’s ‘Paradise Piece of Tudor History Lost’ Premières at Leeds Town Hall As part of its plans to celebrate the 500th anniversary of The Field of Cloth of Gold, one of history’s greatest tournaments, the Royal Armouries Museum aims to bring a unique piece of Tudor history to life in recreating a helmet associated with Thomas West, a prominent military commander and Knight of the Garter in the Tudor Court. The Field of Cloth of Gold of 1520 was an extravagant Tudor sporting event. One of the largest and most expensive events of that century, it witnessed the meeting of King Henry VIII of England and King Francis I of France, two of the most powerful men in the world. The Royal Armouries hold one of the most compelling collections of arms and armour from the Tudor period anywhere in the world, including the imposing foot combat armours of King Henry VIII himself. To celebrate the anniversary next year, the museum will stage a special programme of events, including an international jousting tournament and the recreated helmet will be worn by one of the knights.

The helmet is a rare Anglo-Flemish great bascinet created for the ‘Joust Royal’. Royal Armouries experts believe it is the only such helmet in the world. What makes it particularly striking is its unusual triple-brow reinforce, clearly made by a skilled armourer. It will become part of the Royal Armouries handling and live interpretation collection. To achieve this, the museum is seeking public support to raise the £1,750 required to create it; this includes the costs of materials and the work of an expert armourer. “The Field of Cloth of Gold was arguably the most famous and extravagant event of its kind”, said Keith Dowen, Assistant Curator of European Armour. “The Royal Armouries collection includes some of the most significant arms and armour from the Tudor Court, including the armours of a young and athletic King Henry VIII, tailormade for The Field of Cloth of Gold.” For further information, visit http:// easydonate.org/PVDR005

Paradise Lost reunites the creative team behind last year’s critically acclaimed ‘Written in Fire’ by Vessel (aka composer & electronic musician Sebastian Gainsborough), and Rakhi Singh (violin), Manchester Collective's Music Director. A most enigmatic, disruptive, and exciting creative duo, Vessel and Singh have created a large scale original work for Manchester Collective, that draws together fractured and disparate music from their respective worlds. Here, the sacred meets the profane, the acoustic clashes with the electronic, and some of the earliest classical music ever written is dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. Paradise Lost will be performed in The Crypt at Leeds Town Hall on Friday 14th June at 8pm. Tickets: £19.06 (U-18 & concessions £5.30) from Town Hall Box Office: 0113 376 0318 or online www. leedstownhall.co.uk

Northern Ballet Productions to be Screened Across UK

Northern Ballet recently announced that Cathy Marston’s ‘Victoria’ will be screened in cinemas on 25th June. In addition, David Nixon’s ‘Dracula’ will be streamed direct to cinemas from the newly redeveloped Leeds Playhouse on 31st October. Both productions will be shown in cinemas across the UK. “As the widest touring ballet company in the UK, Northern Ballet goes further to provide worldclass ballet on people’s doorsteps throughout the UK”, said David Nixon, Artistic Director. “It’s not possible to reach everybody with our live tour, so I’m delighted that we will be offering ‘Victoria’ and ‘Dracula’ to cinema audiences throughout the country. “We pride ourselves on being innovative storytellers, pushing the boundaries of what stories can be told through dance and these two ballets are excellent demonstrations of that.

In the hands of one of the most exciting choreographers of today, Cathy Marston’s ‘Victoria’ takes the life of one of our most iconic monarchs and presents it in a way never seen before. Whilst ‘Dracula’ sees Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire brought to the stage in a ballet full of sensuality and darkness – perfect viewing for Halloween! “Not only will ballet fans have more opportunities to see us perform, but others who may have never seen a ballet before might discover a new passion for our art form.” Tickets for ‘Victoria’ and ’Dracula’ in cinemas are on sale now. To find your closest participating cinemas and to book tickets visit northernballet.com/cinema

The Leeds Guild of Singers Seventieth Anniversary The Leeds Guild of Singers turned 70 in 2018 and will be celebrating with an extravagant Anniversary Concert on Saturday 15th June, from 6.30pm at Leeds Minster, where singers and audience will enjoy the wonderful acoustics. Founded in 1948 by the late Dr Melville Cook, the choir gives regular a capella concerts in and around Leeds. The 25-strong chamber choir, under the direction of versatile conductor and singer Joseph Judge, is equally at home in Renaissance polyphony as with new works and commissions.

The choir will also venture into the realm of video games, with music by Jessica Curry. In addition, it has commissioned Matthew Oglesby, a young, up-and-coming composer, to write a piece commemorating the occasion. This piece, entitled Sing, and set to a text by Hannah Stone, will receive its first performance at the concert. For further information, visit www.facebook.com/ leedsguildofsingers/

The conductor and choir have drawn together past and present favourites to create a programme which demonstrates the choir's talent and history. It features something for everyone, with music from composers such as Eric Whitacre, Elgar, Clemens non Papa, William Byrd and Roxana Panufnik.

Poems, Philosophy & Coffee Working with the award-winning Yorkshire poet, Helen Mort, long time Headingley resident and University of Leeds philosopher, Aaron Meskin, set out to explore ways in which poetry and philosophy might be in dialogue. They put together a book, Opposite: Poems, Philosophy & Coffee, which has just been published by Valley Press, an independent publisher in Scarborough. The core of the book comprises ten poems composed by Helen in response to her reading of ten recent philosophy essays. The philosophers then briefly respond to Helen’s poems. An introduction explains the genesis of the work, and two codas reflect on the relationships between coffee, philosophy and poetry. Topics addressed in the book include bad art, itches, meals, oversinging, portraits, rock climbing, street art, taste, tattoos, and a song by Belle and Sebastian.

Why coffee? Meskin and Mort hatched the plan for the book in one of their favorite local cafes, Opposite on Blenheim Terrace. The first poem that Helen wrote—the piece that gave them the idea for the project—was set in another of their favorite Leeds coffee places, Laynes Espresso, and responds to an essay by Aaron about taste. And the whole project was based on the thought that the book might be like a cafe (or bar) conversation between a poet and a philosopher. All the royalties from the book (which is dedicated to Leeds) are going to support Leeds Community Foundation, a charity that addresses childhood hunger and other issues.

The book (£9.99) is available via www. valleypressuk.com/book/121/opposite__ poems,_philosophy_&_coffee

Food&Drink North Leeds Food Festival Returns to Roundhay The North Leeds Food Festival, now in its fourth year, returns to Roundhay Park on 22nd/23rd June, showcasing a huge selection of the region’s best food, drink and performing arts. This year there will be a new Live Chefs’ Demo area. “We’ve been thinking about introducing this for some time, now we feel the timing is right”, said Michael Johnston, Festival Director. “We’ve always been focused on local talent and the Chefs’ Demo area will be no different, with the region’s top chefs – including Josh Whitehead, The Foundry’s Matt Healy & Jamie Clinton of Shear’s Yard – rotating over the weekend.”

For beer enthusiasts, the Soldiers’ Ale House will offer over 22 local beers and ales and there will be eight pop up bars – including specialty wine, Prosecco, local Gin and Cider bars. “It’s been fantastic to see the festival evolve and the support from the local residents has been superb”, said Michael. “We aim to keep adding new features each year.” Additional activities will help to raise funds and awareness for Leeds Mind – the festival has raised nearly £10,000 for the charity over the past three years.

International cuisines lie at the heart of the festival and a whole range of traders will be there, from Greek favourites to Bolivian, plus Vegan specialists. The Grand Artisan Markets will now be housed in two giant marquees, where you can get your hands on everything from luxury pies & cheeses to artisan gin. Of course, there will also be crafts, music, live entertainment, children’s activities and wellbeing talks. Expect lots of comedy and street performances throughout the weekend. In collaboration with students from Leeds Arts University, the festival will also feature displays inspired by food and local history. Tickets (£4.98 adults/ £1.50 U-16/ U-5s free) and Info are available from www. northleedsfoodfestival.co.uk The North Leeds Food Festival team launches the Ilkley Food & Drink Festival on 29th/ 30th June in the lovely location of East Holmes Field, Central Ilkley, by the River Wharfe. CommunityNews SingON! with Opera North

Chapeltown Citizens Advice Warns that Pensioners Could Lose Out

SingON is a relaxed, friendly group for anyone aged 55 or over who loves to sing. Organised by Opera North, the participants meet at St Barnabas Church in Alwoodley every week during term-time, where they enjoy a cup of tea together before singing a mix of repertoire, usually including some opera, under the guidance of a professional artist.

No previous singing experience is necessary nor do people need to be able to read music. Each session costs just £5 which is payable on the door.

Celebration Weekend at Lidgett Park Methodist Church Lidgett Park Methodist Church will be holding an open weekend from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th June to celebrate the opening of the newly refurbished main entrance. The new entrance is the culmination of two years fundraising by members and friends and has been created to give a lighter and more open feel to the doorway on Lidgett Place. If you have wondered what this Grade II listed building is like inside, now is the time to find out! There will be flower displays depicting various aspects of church life, as well as contributions from a number of groups who use the premises. Admission is free and refreshments will be available. The open times are: Friday 14th June - 12 noon – 6pm; Saturday 15th June - 10am – 6pm; Sunday 16th June - 11.30am – 1.30pm.

Chapeltown Citizens’ Advice recently advised that changes to benefit rules mean that some pensioners could soon be worse off. Couples, where one is over pension age the other under, will no longer be able to make a claim for pension credit. They will have to claim Universal Credit instead. For many couples, this will mean that they are worse off - possibly by as much as £7,000 a year. “It is often difficult for people to know which benefit they should claim, and when”, said Nick Morgan, Chief Executive of Chapeltown Citizens Advice. “It is hard to manage on benefits, so it’s vital that people don’t miss out. If you are a ‘mixed-age’ couple and think you may need to claim soon, we can check your circumstances and help you to claim the right benefit before the deadline if you need to.” Couples who are already claiming pension credit will be able to stay on the more generous benefit unless their circumstances change, even after the alteration in the rules. CommunityNews Chapel Allerton’s Annual Big Lunch Returns! Chapel Allerton’s Big Lunch street party on Regent Street, organised by local community group cara, returns on Sunday 9th June, 12 – 5pm. The Big Lunch is free and open for all – you are just asked to bring a smile and some food to share – sweet or savoury, snacks or main course, homecooked or shop bought, everything is welcome. There will even be a prize of a meal for two in a Chapel Allerton restaurant for the best homemade dish! There will also be a brilliant range of live music, toys and games to keep both kids and adults entertained. Marquees, tables & chairs will be provided. “This is my favourite event of the year”, said Dani Barrett, one of the cara organisers. “The atmosphere is fantastic. It’s brilliant to see (and taste!) the effort people put into their dishes, and it’s refreshing to see everyone coming together for a simple day of food, music, family and friends. Just get there early before the best dishes are eaten!” This is the Big Lunch’s eleventh year and the tenth officially arranged by cara, which celebrates

its tenth birthday in October. Keep an eye out for news on their birthday celebrations! As well as the Big Lunch, cara also organises an Easter Funday, supper club, book club, evening classes and other social networking events. Membership is just £10 a year and you can use your cara card in over 100 different shops, bars, restaurants and online locally. Enjoy excellent discounts, while supporting local and independent businesses. A minimum 10% of membership fees is donated to charity – £999 recently went to buy a defibrillator for the community which is installed on Harrogate Road. The cara Committee is made up of unpaid volunteers. Helping People to Make a House a Home West Yorkshire House Clearance recently launched a scheme whereby they will provide furniture and household items free to people who need urgent help. The company is inviting voluntary agencies, city councillors and community workers to contact them and refer clients and service users who might need assistance. “We clear huge amounts of furniture and household items on a weekly basis”, said Sarah Carmody, Owner. “These items are usually sold or taken to the dump, despite being in excellent condition. There are many people in Leeds who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in new housing with no furniture or funds to

pay for it. It could be someone escaping domestic violence who has been urgently rehoused, or a former homeless person who has finally got a roof over their head.” Once a person has been referred to West Yorkshire Housing Clearance, they are placed on a priority list with those in most need at the top of the list. When the items are available, they will be delivered free of charge. Women-only or men-only teams are available to deliver and the scheme covers all of Leeds, Otley, Ilkley and surrounding areas. “As a company we work to strict ethical and moral standards and pride ourselves on being honest, compassionate and caring”, said Sara. “So, helping people in our community is a natural development for us and one that we hope to expand upon.” For further information, visit www. westyorkshirehouseclearance.co.uk/ communityproject

CommunityNews The Leeds Big Sleep 2019

St George’s Crypt, the Leeds Rhinos’ Foundation and St Gemma’s Hospice are teaming up once again for this year’s Leeds Big Sleep in November. All three charities have been shortlisted for the Fundraising Partnership of the Year Award in the 2019 Institute of Fundraising Yorkshire Awards, in recognition of the 2018 Leeds Big Sleep which raised £32,000. This collaborative fundraising event involves businesses, Leeds residents, Leeds Rhinos players and members of participating charities spending a night out on the terraces at Emerald Headingly Stadium to raise money for vulnerable communities in Leeds. “It was so cold on the night – it really hit home how our clients must feel every night”, said Cheryl Harrington, Head of Fundraising at St George’s Crypt. “We are happy that so many businesses got involved and hope that this year we get more CEOs and corporate groups to raise even more money for these very local causes.”

St George’s Crypt has been providing care and support to homeless and disadvantaged adults in Leeds since 1930. It offers food, emergency accommodation, specialist residential projects, recovery from addiction, work experience, skills training and much more. Leeds Rhinos Foundation is the official charity of Leeds Rhinos. It delivers projects in the heart of the community, harnessing the power of sport to make a lasting, positive impact on individuals’ lives. St Gemma’s Hospice provides care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses through its In-Patient Unit, community team and day services. The care is provided free-of-charge and is open to patients of all beliefs, religions and cultures. Participation is aimed at individuals and corporate teams with a sponsorship target of £100 per person. Cllr Dan Cohen Alwoodley

As I mentioned earlier this year, we really do have the Summer of Sport in Leeds this year, with the Tour De Yorkshire, Leeds Half Marathon and, of course, the Leeds Triathlon. The Leeds Triathlon comes to us on 8th/9th June. Details of the impact it will have on road use (much of which is around Roundhay Park and Moortown) can be found at leeds.triathlon.org/ event_info/local_information/ What do you think of all these sporting events, now a regular feature on the Leeds calendar? Are you happy that Leeds is now punching its weight in terms of international sporting events? Are you pleased that the Leeds economy is getting a real boost from hosting Triathlons and

the like? Or, as some local residents who have been speaking to me think, has it all got a bit too frequent? I’d also love to know how well you think the city is communicating what is happening to residents and what the likely impact might be on their plans for an ‘events’ day? Is it doing enough to allow everyone to be properly prepared? I know a number of schools closed early on 3rd May because of road closures in Alwoodley for the Tour De Yorkshire. Is that an acceptable trade off? Please do let me know and I can ensure your views are listened to. As well as being the Alwoodley Councillor, I have now become the Shadow Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture (previously Shadow Cabinet Member for Children and Families), so I have an extra interest in this – your thoughts would be helpful. Recent warm weather was a timely reminder that Summer is just around the corner. There is nothing more summery than listening to a brass band in the park! On the afternoon of Sunday 16th June, the

Gledhow Valley Woods Family FunDay The Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods are holding their 20th Annual Family FunDay on Saturday 15th June, 1.30 – 5pm on the grassland area adjacent to Gledhow Valley Road and Allerton Grange Way. The event will be an afternoon of fun, activities and entertainment, focussing on the local woodland, plants and wildlife, and all are invited!

Leeds Armed Forces Day will be held on Briggate in Leeds city centre on Saturday 29th June from 11am – 4pm. There will be an array of displays, military vehicles and military related stalls, together with the opportunity to speak to military charities and veterans’ groups and hear about their experiences of serving in the Armed Forces. You will also be able to take on the challenge of a 27ft climbing wall, take a photo next to a replica spitfire, and take part in a range of arts and crafts. The line-up of both contemporary and traditional musical entertainment will include West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Band, the City of Leeds Pipe Band and the Daisy Belles. As is the tradition to mark Armed Forces Day, the celebrations will begin with a parade and a formal salute from the Lord

Mayor and dignitaries, allowing people to show their appreciation and support for serving men, women and veterans.

Activities include Live music from The Friendly Brass Band, alpacas, birds of prey, a climbing wall, nest box making, Circus Skills, plant & book stalls, beekeeping, homemade refreshments, and much, much more!

At the start of Armed Forces Week, a flag-raising ceremony will take place on Saturday 22nd June at Victoria Gardens, which will include representatives from the British Armed Forces, veterans’ associations, cadets and related support organisations. Hosted by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, the ceremony celebrates the contribution of our armed forces, veterans and their families, past and present.

They are looking for volunteers to help out on the day – either by bringing food for the refreshments stall, books or DVDs, helping to put up tents and marquees, or helping to look after the stalls. They also need prizes for the tombola.

Swift Photo: Nick Upton rspb-images. com

The Common Swift is a Summer migrant with an amazing lifestyle – it lives its whole life, apart from as a chick in the nest, on the wing – feeding, sleeping, and sometimes mating without ever touching ground. It is not a bird, therefore, that is easy to see close up. Its plumage is a sooty brown, with a pale patch under the chin, but against the sky it often appears black. It has a fast, flickering flight, and frequently glides on stiff, sickle shaped wings. In Britain, Swifts nest almost exclusively in buildings, especially old ones with access to roof space. The nest can be made of any available material, including straw, hay and feathers. They feed almost exclusively on flying insects, including airborne spiders, catching up to 10,000 a day. In bad weather, they will fly into the wind to get around an area of rain and can fly 800km in a day. To cope with long absences by the parents, swift eggs can survive chilling, and the development of the chick simply slows down until they return.

Swift calls are usually referred to as ‘screaming’ and can be clearly heard when a group flies through a builtup area. Sadly, Swift numbers have fallen by 20% in the last 40 years, due to lack of suitable nesting sites. To find out how you can help Swifts, visit https://www. swift-conservation.org/ Leeds RSPB Group

Garden Round Up With Tracy Foster

Summer is here at last, with many gardens looking their absolute best this month.

Instant Flower Power

Staking and Supporting

Planting up pots and containers for Summer is one of my favourite garden jobs. Try the local antique shops for interesting vessels to use, put in good quality potting compost and really pack in the plants for a fabulous display. Last year I filled a shallow basket (see photo) with Marguerites and sweetly scented Nemesia in shades of pink and enjoyed continuous flowers for months and months.

Don’t forget to put in the stakes and plant supports as your plants grow. Some climbers also need tying in as they send out new shoots

Planting up pots and

Add slow release fertiliser to feed your plants for the first part of the Summer, later in the season they will need a liquid feed every two or three weeks. Weeding and hoeing

Jobs on the veg plot include earthing up potatoes

In hot dry spells the best way to get rid of all the little weed seedlings is to slice them clean off their roots using a sharp hoe, the tops can be left on the soil surface where they will wither and die. It’s a quick and easy way to keep things looking tidy. Larger, perennial weeds such as dandelions have to be dug out instead as the roots will continue to grow if left in the soil.

containers for Summer is one of my favourite

Edible Gardening Jobs on the veg plot include earthing up potatoes, taking off the side shoots from tomato plants and tying them to their supports, putting straw under strawberry fruits and keeping everything well watered in dry weather. Strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and rhubarb should be ready for harvesting this month along with artichokes, asparagus, broad beans, early potatoes, lettuces and radishes. It is also time to plant out seedlings of any veg plants raised indoors, or you could sow various types of seeds directly outside including beans, broccoli, carrots, leeks, cabbage and radishes Get Inspired The best way of all to gather ideas for your garden is to find out what other people near you are doing with their gardens, look out for ‘open gardens’ events, like St Gemma’s Open Gardens on 15th June (10am – 2pm); Chapel Allerton Open Gardens (see facebook) on 16th June; and Roundhay Open Gardens on Sunday 23rd June (www.reap-leeds.org.uk/gardening) www.tracyfostergardendesign.co.uk

Sound&Vision Film Review By Samuel Payne

EXTREMELY WICKED, SHOCKINGLY EVIL AND VILE WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY: JACQUES AUDIARD STARRING: ZAC EFRON, LILY COLLINS, KAYA SCODELARIO, JOHN MALKOVICH, HALEY JOEL OSMENT, JIM PARSONS CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 108 MINUTES “Society wants to believe it can identify evil people, or bad or harmful people, but it's not practical. There are no stereotypes...”

The words of Ted Bundy, a figure who stands out as one of history’s most infamous criminals. In the 1970s, he was a dapper, promising law student at the University of Utah. In that same decade he also murdered and tortured dozens of young women. Bundy evaded police across several states for almost a decade and twice broke out of confinement to continue his frenzy. When he sacked his lawyers and defended himself in court, the unprecedented media attention gave him the profile and allure of a movie star. 'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile' explores the unbelievable events which led to Bundy’s international fame, sentencing and eventual execution, and is based on the testimony of Elizabeth Kendall, his girlfriend for some of that time. Choosing to retell the story as a mystery thriller from Kendall’s perspective, we see little of the crimes of which Bundy is accused, but rather the more mesmerising behaviour he exercised as prime suspect in a series of abductions and murder inquiries. Ultimately, the film poses the question we ask of most convicted killers: how did their nearest and dearest not know? The complex manipulation of Kendall and all of those close to Bundy is the crux of the film. It brilliantly exposes the man’s innate ability to coerce and impress himself upon almost everyone, including the judge who would sentence him. In a career-changing performance, ex-teen-idol Zac Efron shoulders the burden of resurrecting Bundy in a brave and centred portrayal which surpasses expectations – and has bizarrely rewarded him with some criticism for glamorising Bundy’s persona. But that’s exactly the point, and good reason why Efron’s clean-cut image makes for inspired casting. Not

only does the role play against type, it vividly re-establishes that Bundy was a knowingly handsome, cocksure manipulator who polished his persona and believed his own dialogue, just as an actor is trained to do. The film’s narrative leads us to believe him too. Nobody expects a monster to be young, svelte or charming, and Efron profits on expectations by playing Bundy like he played himself: a quietly confident, suave and intensely likeable student lawyer. The benefit of hindsight makes the charm-offensive all the more sinister, as you’re impelled to study the mechanisms of his manipulation in every micro expression. It’s a performance of a performance you just can’t stop watching. Lily Collins hands over a sympathetic study as Kendall, the young mother torn between commitment and fear as evidence mounts against her boyfriend. The dynamic between Collins and Efron is smartly downplayed, evidencing Bundy’s supposed wholesome home life character. A more interesting dynamic surfaces between Efron and Kaya Scodelario, as goggle-eyed Carol Ann Boone – a dedicated if not soppy acquaintance destined to become Bundy’s death-row wife and mother of his child. A bounty of high-profile supporting roles buttresses the film into a full ensemble piece, including John Malkovich as a grizzled judge, Jim Parsons as a memorably comical prosecutor and

Haley Joel Osment as a rather doughy if wellintentioned love interest for Kendall. The final major player is the landscape of Seventies’ America, aiding and assisting Bundy to stage a spectrum of identities without pursuit. It’s easy to forget there was a time before CCTV surveillance and digital tracking, but the film re-establishes the more primitive world through dimly lit streets and sedentary police officers, all underscored with a seductive disco-funk soundtrack. There’s also a liberal amount of archive footage in the mix, including original news reports, helping to further embed a documentary realism and period feel to the visuals. The takeaway from this film is not a catalogue of Bundy’s ghoulish atrocities, but rather a thrilling insight into a monster’s complex ability to charm, smarm and outperform almost everyone around him. Efron becomes Bundy with absolute conviction, to the extent that audiences will again begin to contest his crimes. The belief that such a persona continues to influence us into believing and even liking him, is perhaps the most chilling aspect of all.

The Godfathers of Alternative Cabaret at City Varieties

Bands Join Forces for Latin American Fiesta

Well-known four-piece Mestisa has played 'beautiful music from Latin America' for several years in venues across Leeds. From their childhood memories in South America, lead singers Ana and Barbara knew well that traditional music was even more vibrant when brought to life with wind and brass instruments. So, they invited some musicians from Los Camaradas salsa band to join them to create a special fiesta event on Friday 7th June, 8pm at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton.

Tiger Lillies, the Olivier Award winning and Grammy nominated godfathers of alternative cabaret, celebrate their thirtieth anniversary with a very special show at City Varieties on Wednesday 12th June at 8pm. One of the most provocative and genre-defying bands you’re likely to ever come across, the world of the Tiger Lillies is dark, peculiar and hilarious - their songs darkly funny, filled with moments of deep sadness and immense beauty. In this new show they take you on a trip into their newest album ‘Devil’s Fairground’, where temptation and sin await! Formed in1989 by singer-songwriter Martyn Jacques, they perform shows all over the world, collaborating with circus performers and Shakespearean actors; experimental dancers and avant-garde photographers; burlesque

puppeteers and classical music ensembles; winning an Olivier Award for Best Entertainment for their West End musical ‘Shockheaded Peter’ along the way. They have toured worldwide with their recent productions ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’, ‘Lulu - A Murder Ballad’ and ‘Poe’s Haunted Palace’ and have released countless singles, albums and films. Martyn also won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Musical or Entertainment. Head for City Varieties on 12th June and celebrate the 30th anniversary of a true genre defying phenomenon - they don’t make them like this anymore! Age guidance 14+

The event will premiere new arrangements and create a party atmosphere with music to listen and dance to – crucially with new instruments highlighting the tunes. Mestisa is made up of Ana Luisa Munoz (cuatro, guitar, perc); Barbara Kempf (guitar, charango, perc); Brendan Bache (percussion); and Mike Sandell (bass). Joining them from Los Camarades will be David Wallace (trombone) who created the new arrangements from his base in Roundhay. On trumpet is Jude Abbott, formerly of Chumbawamba and compère of the Musicport Festival Main Stage, and Sarah Jane Ross on clarinet. Adventure and Fundraising in The Dales Clare Balding

The festival consists of two trail runs (16 & 5 miles) on Saturday 10th August, and various walking routes covering 4, 5, 14, and 26 mile distances on Sunday 11th August. Each route takes in some stunning scenery, providing breath-taking views for both strolling families and adrenaline-fired trail-runners. “I adore the Dales!” said Clare Balding, Jane Tomlinson Appeal patron, broadcaster and walking enthusiast. “This event is a great opportunity for more people to enjoy the Yorkshire countryside

Marie Curie would like to thank everyone involved in making the 2019 Great Daffodil Appeal a resounding success. In North Leeds, the campaign raised nearly £4,500 through supermarket collections at Morrisons in Horsforth and Kirkstall, Asda at Holt Park, and Tesco in Roundhay and Seacroft. Every penny raised helps to fund the care and support that Marie Curie provide. They are there for everyone affected by a terminal illness. It’s thanks to their volunteers and people’s generosity that they can continue to provide care across the region.

and benefit a fantastic cause in the process. The introduction of so many different routes, and a day of trail-running means absolutely anyone can get involved. I love walking, I find it can do wonders for your mind-set and it’s a good way to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors that surrounds us. “I’d encourage anyone to pull on their walking boots or running shoes and go take in the spectacular scenery of the Yorkshire Dales. It could do you wonders, and it will certainly help the charities that stand to benefit from what I’m sure will be a wonderful weekend.”

Volunteering and fundraising are vital in supporting this nursing service. In 2018/19, Marie Curie nurses cared for over 4,000 patients in Yorkshire – making over 700 home visits and delivering almost 7,000 hours of care across Leeds. For the second year running, writer/ director Kay Mellor has helped to raise awareness of the Great Daffodil Appeal. “Terminal illness touches every one of us in one way or another during our lives”, said Kay. “I’ve witnessed first-hand the work of the nurses and they are simply amazing – providing light in the darkest of hours. They work tirelessly to provide comfort to individuals and families when they need it the most.” There are numerous ways to get involved with Marie Curie – for further information, visit www. mariecurie.org.uk

mornings, whist drives and quizzes. Some people join as non-playing members just to enjoy the social activities.

The Bohemians were formed in 1910 with the aim of creating ‘a spirit of neighbourliness and greater sociability’, and to provide facilities for bowls and indoor games. The grounds initially included a croquet lawn and putting green but redevelopment has since reduced the size of the area to a bowling green only.

Despite a healthy membership, Roundhay Bohemians Bowling Club still welcomes new faces. The club is known for its friendliness. They bowl most afternoons, weather permitting. Call in and see them if you are interested in bowling. There are bowls available and they are more than willing to help those with no experience.

The club does not take part in league competitions but plays about a dozen friendlies with local clubs. The season runs between April and the end of September.

Secures New Radiotherapy Scanner Sovereign Health Care recently donated a whopping £250,000 to the Leeds Cares MR Sim Appeal, which means that the charity has achieved its £2.4 million target and can purchase a brand-new scanner for Leeds Cancer Centre, part of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Over 7,000 patients are treated at the Centre each year. The majority of patients receiving radiotherapy at Leeds will first undergo CT scanning to identify the target area. An MR simulator (magnetic resonance) can be used in conjunction with, or as an alternative to CT scanning. It can produce high quality scans of the affected area and images with better soft tissue definition, allowing the areas for treatment to be identified with greater clarity and minimising the risk of damage to healthy cells. It will transform treatment for thousands of patients every year allowing for quicker, more effective treatment with reduced risk. The money for the appeal was raised through individual donations, support from corporate partners and fundraising by staff and patients. Sovereign Healthcare was delighted to be able to donate the final £250,000.

Over 7,000 patients are treated at the Centre each year “It was clear that this technology would be transformational for patients needing radiotherapy treatment across Yorkshire and was exactly the type of appeal Sovereign Health Care would support”, said Russ Piper, Chief Executive of Sovereign Health Care. Edward Ziff, Chairman of Leeds Cares said companies like Sovereign had a big role to play in fundraising. “At Leeds Cares we get lots of fantastic companies who want to give back to the NHS and make a real impact in their communities. Without their kind support, we wouldn’t be able to deliver major appeals like this. It will make a huge difference to cancer patients across Yorkshire.” www.leeds-cares.org www.sovereignhealthcare.co.uk/

Royal Celebration for GSAL Queen’s Scouts The Queen’s Scout Award is the highest award for members of the Scout movement and 20 Explorer Scouts from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) were among 400 award winners at Windsor Castle in April for a day of celebration.

GSAL

The award recognises exceptional achievement in a number of areas, including developing a skill such as first aid, engaging in physical activity, which could be a team sport or going to the gym regularly, and doing voluntary work over a 12-month period. GSAL voluntary projects have included working in a care home and helping as young leaders in cub packs and scout troops.

Otley Science Festival is set to develop even more fascinating activities as The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) becomes a sponsor. The week-long festival at Otley Courthouse every November includes science shows for pupils during the day, and informative, entertaining evening and lunchtime sessions. The Otley Science Fair at the end of the week brings together organisations from Yorkshire and beyond to show off the best in hands-on science. GSAL is well-placed to deliver exciting demonstrations and engaging activities for science-loving young people. As part of its sponsorship, it will provide free transport to local primary schools to enable pupils to attend events during the week.

“We are delighted to welcome GSAL as a festival partner”, said Marty Jopson, Otley Science Festival. “Its support will help us to extend our outreach work in local schools, and we look forward to involving their students and staff in festival activities.” Otley Science Festival runs from 11th – 16th November 2019, with the Otley Science Fair on Saturday 16th November (10am – 4pm). The full programme will be published in late summer. For further details, visit www. otleysciencefestival.co.uk

OUTLIN

GSAL Scouts also undertook a four-day backpacking expedition across the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains and completed a five-day residential course. They also studied topics in the spheres of community, values and international friendship. The event included a parade and service in St George’s Chapel. HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and the Chief Scout Bear Grylls were there and both chatted to scouts assembled for the parade. “It was a once in a lifetime experience which brought home to us how big the scout community is”, said Miles Falivene-Rook, Year 13. “Scouting has taught me so many skills and has been a major part of my life which I plan to continue after I leave school.”

Younger Life Yellow is the Colour of Sunshine tutti frutti theatre is committed to bringing imaginative new writing to young children, and recently collaborated with playwright Brendan Murray to produce ‘Yellow is the Colour of Sunshine’, a vibrant new play for children aged three and above. The production uses spoken words, sign language, movement and Japanese-inspired design to tell the charming story of two friends, Hani and Yoshi. Underneath an ever-changing sky, the tale of a little boy and girl unfolds as they make friends, learn about feelings and work out how to communicate what’s in their hearts. Side by side they play by the blue sea, run through the green fields and dance in the yellow sunshine. But one day the sky turns grey and everything starts to change… tutti frutti’s new production was created in consultation with Professor David Cottrell, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Leeds University, who played a key role in developing its theme of encouraging emotional literacy in young people. It aims to promote discussion in areas involved with emotional literacy in young children: the ability to recognise emotions, to manage and feel in control of feelings and recognise emotions in others. “New writing is a vital aspect of our work as a theatre company for young people”, said Wendy Harris, Artistic Director. “We collaborate with leading children’s playwrights to create high-quality

original plays. For ‘Yellow is the Colour of Sunshine’, we wanted to create a piece for theatre’s youngest audiences that explores emotions and the importance of identifying and understanding feelings. “We’ve been on an exciting journey bringing Brendan’s playful script to life, with wonderful original music by Christella Litris. This includes working with a d/deaf performer in addition to a dancer and spoken word performer – which really opens up communication to create a vibrant and magical show for children and their adults.” ‘Yellow is the Colour of Sunshine’ brings together a creative team that includes designer Kate Bunce, Movement Director and performer Holly Irving, composer Christella Litris, and lighting designer Sara Burns. It is performed by a cast of three: Connor Bryson, Phoebe Stapleton and Holly Irving. Catch it at Seven Arts Chapel Allerton on 13th June 1.30pm & 5pm; and York Royal Theatre from 19th – 22nd June. www.tutti-frutti.org.uk

Videos to Support Children’s Speech Development It is estimated that two children in every classroom of 30 children have a language disorder that affects the way they understand and express language. Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust recently released a series of animated speech and language development videos, developed by the Trust’s Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Team to help parents and carers support children under five to develop the best possible communication skills. “Parents and carers told us they wanted a resource that was easier to manage around their busy lives and work commitments”, said Sara Winfield, Specialist Speech and Language Therapist at Leeds Community Healthcare. “They wanted something more visual and convenient to access at home. It won’t replace the written resources or courses that we offer but it does support and enhance them.” The animations highlight ten top tips for supporting children such as reducing screen time and avoiding the use of dummies during the day once children are 12 months or older.

“The videos are straight to the point, really effective and make the key points easy to remember”, said Kam Gill, Primary School Teacher. “They also explain why reading is essential from a young age. I read visual books with my son who is nearly two and has Down syndrome. I use repetitive phrases as the videos recommend and as a result he has started to sign new words because he remembers what comes next in the story!” The videos are available to watch at www.leedscommunityhealthcare. nhs.uk/toptips/

Ann Maguire Fund: Helping

A Summer Camp for

Young People

Young Leeds Musicians

Develop their Talents The Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund, set up in memory of teacher Ann Maguire, recently awarded over £26,000 to community groups and individuals across Leeds to develop young people’s aspirations in the Arts.

Young players who would like to perfect their skills could spend part of their Summer holidays playing with some of the region’s finest performers as Opera North holds its fourth Orchestra Camp at the University of Leeds. Run in the university’s Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall from 27th – 30th August, the camp is open to instrument players of all abilities aged ten and above. They will be helped to develop their technical and musical ability in a friendly, supportive environment. Sessions will include instrumental, singing and creative composition. There will be a chance to explore exciting new music and to perform alongside the Orchestra of Opera North. The camp will culminate with a performance in

the Broderick Hall at Leeds City Museum. The camp is open to young musicians at any level who play strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwind (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone), brass (horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba), and percussion – no previous experience is required. Opera North Orchestra Camp is nonresidential with sessions running from 9.30am -4pm each day, at a total cost of £175. Discounts are available if more than one child attends from the same family. Further information is available from 0113 223 3600 and www.operanorth.co.uk

Managed by Leeds Community Foundation, the Fund has distributed grants of up to £5,000 to five groups: Dance Zone Action Leeds (DAZL), which works with young people to improve their emotional wellbeing and resilience via workshops, dance and film; DJ School UK, which will provide bursaries for its accredited DJ course, enabling young people to build relevant skills and learn about the industry; New Wortley Community Association, which provides free drama sessions to develop skills in acting, self-expression, singing and dance; Shakespeare Schools Foundation, which will host the Shakespeare Schools Festival, working with local schools to make Shakespeare accessible; and Leeds West Indian Carnival, which transfers skills in carnival arts of costume design and construction to young people of Caribbean descent. The Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund also offers bursaries of up to £500 to young people under 18 who, without financial support, would be unable to develop their skills within the arts. The Fund will re-open for applications in December 2019. For more details, or to donate, visit: www.annmaguire.org

A Backstage Pass for City Varieties & Leeds Grand Theatre The City Varieties Music Hall and Leeds Grand Theatre Summer youth programme, Backstage Pass 2019, is two weeks of arts workshops for 7 – 17 year olds. Running from 12th – 23rd August, it is designed to introduce young people to various aspects of theatre and give those already engaged in the arts new opportunities to further their skills. Working alongside professional theatremakers and artists on the City Varieties’ stage and in the main studio at Leeds Grand Theatre, the workshops aim to spike the imagination and interest of every young person - from creating music in the junk percussion workshop to exploring physical comedy in the clowning session.

New this year is the Youth Theatre Taster Day (Mon 12 Aug, 10am - 3pm) – perfect for those who want to know what goes on at City Varieties’ Youth Theatre or want to work with the team behind the July production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. The Play in a Week project returns with a twist – the Young Playwrights’ Project will spend three days writing a script which will then be staged the following week. Allerton Primary Has Brilliant New Outdoor Area After eight weeks of construction and at a cost of £110,000, the pupils at Allerton Church of England Primary School’s Early Years Foundation can now combine learning and play in a new, purpose-built, all-weather play area. Combining conventional playground equipment, a vegetable plot and an environmentally approved tree planting project with a giant sand pit (complete with pulleys and measures), a sensory water feature, messy kitchen, accommodation for chickens and rabbits and even a ‘grass’ three piece suite, the feature brings maths, science and nature to life. “The children love it”, said Deputy Head Liz Willis, who worked closely with designers Timotay Playscape. “Over a week, more than 200 children now get to play in this incredible environment. All along we have consulted with our parents and carers, our staff and with the wider community in order to deliver a safe, innovative and stimulation facility.”

The all-weather, artificial grass, which covers the furniture, a horse, two sheep and a duck, gives the children all year outdoor access, whilst the sandpit (the size of a small beach!), can become anything you like – from a building site to a desert island. “The funds to pay for the play area came from revenue generated by Out of School Clubs”, said Helen Stott, Head Teacher. “We are all terribly proud of what we have achieved, particularly as it demonstrates how heavily we invest in our Early Years.”
