LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Dear Readers There’s nothing like a little bit of sunshine to get us thinking about tidying up inside and out and improving our living space. With this in mind we spoke to three interior designers to get a few tips on changes that could transform your home. We are delighted to be able to offer six pairs of tickets (worth £30 each) to That Glorious Noise, a fabulous concert at Harewood House starring Russell Watson and Classical BRIT nominee Camilla Kerslake, (pictured on our cover). The concert is in aid of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. NAFAS, the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies, is also offering our readers 150 day tickets (£13 each) to their national show at Harrogate International Centre. We have news of more interesting physical feats, local theatre companies are extremely busy with productions at The Carriageworks, Adel Memorial Hall and Cookridge Village Hall. We recommend five music festivals to take in this summer – and don’t forget that tickets to Party/Opera in the Park will be available from 5th June (last year they disappeared in just a couple of days!). And, to get everyone in the mood for summer, we talk a little bit about eating al fresco. The deadline for editorial for the July edition is 1st June, and for August it’s 1st July. Keep your news and notices flooding in – we love finding out what you’re up to! Readers Letters ....................................................................................................................................................................................................

Congratulations! Congratulations on the new look Horsforth Life. The magazine now has a much brighter, fresher more contemporary appearance. The new use of graphics in the editorial pages - and the use of coloured text and headers throughout, is a refreshing innovation, as is the adaptable new page layout. A really great improvement. Phil Munroe Friends of Hunger Hills Woods Swan Song for the West Park Centre? The future of West Park Centre is again coming into question with the anticipated departure of the Northern Ballet Theatre this autumn. It is vital that the Centre’s role in the community is given due consideration before any decision is taken. The Centre is one of the most used councilowned facilities in Leeds. In addition to Northern Ballet and Education Leeds, a minimum of 2,000 people a week use the Centre. The large hall and rehearsal rooms are fully booked each week, and echo with the sound of music. The Centre provides rehearsal space for many of the city’s music groups, including: Leeds Symphony Orchestra, West Riding Opera, Leeds Festival Chorus, Phoenix Concert Band and many more. It is also relied on by local resident groups, and numerous local clubs and youth groups. Local residents’ associations are all lobbying for a sound business case to be examined as part of a Council consultation process. The Centre, an early 1950’s building may be a bit of an ugly duckling, but it makes lovely music and deserves the chance to continue as the centre of the West Park community and an integral part of the city’s musical heritage. After all, we all know what ugly ducklings can turn into? Doug Kemp West Park Residents Association

‘Legislation at Last’ sic! I suppose I should not be surprised that Mr Tyler chose to celebrate the restrictive legislation passed to inhibit the opening of private enterprise rented accommodation in Headingley. I believe the group resented the influx of students to the area and its subsequent change of character. Harehills and large swathes of Bradford and Dewsbury had their character changed far more dramatically by their colonisation of people of an entirely different culture. However, even the extreme rightwing of politics did not propose corrective legislation. Legislation restricts the ability of society to produce wealth, which is essential to support the non-productive sector of society, including the civil service whose duty it is to police the legislation. This, and similar regulation of the housing market, favours big businesses which work on a large scale and bears heavily on the family landlords, who may only own one or two houses. The legislation requires a landlord to apply for planning permission if they wish to change a house in multiple occupancy to individual flatlets. This is a tedious and expensive procedure and by the time the permission has been granted, the market may have changed again. In this way stasis sets in and the market needs are increasingly ignored. It is incorrect to state that the students, Unipol and the landlords did not oppose the changes with vigour. Perhaps it was by being economical with the truth that the Luddites secured the changes that they wanted. In this climate the ‘Amalgamated Union of Ostlers’ would have successfully banned railways, which were the key to the explosion of profitability that we are still enjoying. Of course, some people would hold that we should all have to rely on the Council publicity paper for local news and not receive such excellent journals as this.

Police Update Headingley With PCSO Sarah Gaines

....................................................................................................................................................................................................

O

fficers acted quickly when a member of the public reported a theft from Sainsbury’s in the Arndale Centre. From the description of the man, the eagle eyed officers were able to find the suspect after he’d left the scene and detained him. He was subsequently arrested and issued with an £80 Penalty Notice, due to it being his first offence. Maybe next time he’ll think before he acts. After reports of burglary where the offender had only just made

off, officers rushed to the scene to conduct an area search. A male was seen to drop the property he’d just stolen and carry on with his escape. He was later arrested, charged and remanded in custody until a court date is set. With the lighter nights, we would like to remind residents that leaving doors and windows open is an invitation to burglars who will sneak in and out before you realise it. Even when you are in the house, shut the window if you leave a room!

Policing Pledge The Policing Pledge meeting will be held at St Michael’s Parish Hall, St Michael’s Road, at 7pm on the third Wednesday of the Month. Please feel free to attend the meeting and speak to local officers regarding any local issues you may have.

ith lighter nights and better weather, we’re working hard to ensure that any reports of anti-social behaviour (ASB) are tackled appropriately across Meanwood and Moortown. We have seen a reduction in ASB calls over the last year and have good working relationships with Leeds City Council departments such as the Anti-Social Behaviour Unit, Environmental Enforcement, and Youth Services.

We work with housing providers including East North East Homes Leeds to take tenancy action on perpetrators. We listen to residents’ concerns and through our Police and Community Together (PACT) meetings, we set local priorities which include tackling ASB hotspots. We’re currently working on problem solving issues in the Parkside Road area, near the Cricket Club and the Myrtle Tavern, and the Stonegate estate.

Partnership Advises Students on Integration into Local Communities

....................................................................................................................................................................................................

A

groundbreaking partnership to raise students’ awareness of their responsibilities towards the neighbourhoods in which they live has just celebrated its first anniversary and is expanding to cover even more of the city’s students. The scheme, which helps to alleviate waste, recycling and noise problems in areas heavily populated by students, now includes Leeds Trinity, Leeds College of Music and Leeds City College.

University life involves moving into the communities and often running a household for the first time. With this comes new responsibilities and learning to live harmoniously with their neighbours. When this fails, the partnership will take action against persistent offenders utilising various sanctions to ensure a timely resolution. This could result in legal proceedings, seizure of equipment and action through the Universities’ disciplinary proceedings.

The partnership, believed to have been the first of its kind in the country, was forged between Leeds City Council, The University of Leeds, Leeds Metropolitan University and West Yorkshire Police. It aims to advise students on the impact they have on their host communities and support their integration.

If you are troubled by excess noise etc., you can contact Leeds City Council on 0113 222 4406 (days) and 0113 242 5841 (out of hours). The Universities’ Neighbourhood Helpline can be contacted on 0113 343 1064 or neighbourhood.helpline@ leeds.ac.uk

High Praise for ArtForms

F

rom toddlers with triangles to pensioners on pianos – Education Leeds’ music service, ArtForms, has something for everyone. That’s according to The Federation of Music Services, a national music education body representing 98% of music services and which has described ArtForms as

‘outstanding’. The assessors spent three days observing lessons and ensemble sessions, and meeting teachers, staff and managers. They highlighted the breadth of opportunities offered by ArtForms and were especially impressed that, as well as catering for able and gifted musicians, there was also

a wide range activities for children with special needs. Eight music centres around Leeds provide classes and groups for musicians of all ages, abilities and tastes. Everyone is welcome to participate. For more info call 0113 2304074 or visit www. artformsleeds.co.uk.

Headingley Continues to Bloom! ...............................................................................

Headingley in Bloom started the gardening year by sprucing up the Otley Road flowerbeds, adding a bit of colour with winter pansies and primulas before the perennials and bulbs started coming into their own. There are some new planters on North Lane, the largest being a sturdy wooden trough outside Coop Funeral Care planted with twisted hazel, lavender, pansies and tête-a-tête, as well as various other plants which will come into their own throughout the year. Smaller matching pairs of tubs will be placed outside Label Boutique and Doveners to provide floral display during the day, and can then be taken in at night. Hopefully this will avoid the vandalism and theft that dogged earlier attempts to brighten up this stretch of Headingley. A big ‘thank you’ to all our sponsors and supporters. Headingley NDS Approved

.............................................................................................................

Headingley was the city’s first suburban development in the nineteenth century. A special place - it is home to 90 listed buildings and monuments! Under pressure from landlords and developers, residents have acted to defend their heritage and, over the last couple of years, have prepared a Neighbourhood Design Statement (NDS), which describes the character of the area, what should be preserved, and how it should be observed by new development. The Council’s Planning Board has now approved the Draft NDS and this will be available for formal consultation this month. All residents (and anyone else) will be able to comment on it. Copies are available in the Planning Department (Leonardo Building, Rossington Street) and in Headingley Library, and will be sent to all participating community associations. It can also be seen on the Council’s website: go to ‘Consultations’. Following consultation, the NDS will be amended as necessary, and adopted as an official planning document, part of the Local Development Framework. The NDS is funded by the Area Committee, and is produced by Headingley Development Trust. For further information, visit the HDT website www. headingleydevelopmenttrust.org.uk or contact the Project Director, Dr Richard Tyler, at richardt@ headingleydevelopmenttrust.org.uk or Freepost RRLS-ZZLB-REXS, Planning Services, 2 Rossington St, Leeds LS2 8HD (no stamp needed).

‘Green Streets’ Helps to Leave Leeds Tidy! ....................................................................................................................................................................................................

G

reen Streets, the student led volunteering project working with Leave Leeds Tidy, is back this summer, collecting reusable, unwanted items left by students during the changeover. Last year the project diverted over 21 tonnes of reusable items from landfill and even more collections are planned this year. There will be collections on 5th, 20th, 27th, 30th June and 1st July. Items should be left out after 9.30am on collection days, to avoid bags being

slashed. Those living in the collection area will receive red bags with details about the collections and other services available. Green Streets will collect clothes, kitchenware, electrical items, bric-abrac, stationary and furniture. These will be redistributed through free shops at Leeds University Union and at community centres, where anyone can come along and choose items that they need. WANTED – Information Officer! You’ve probably heard of Headingley Network but may not know what it does. That is why we need an information officer …to strengthen our membership, enlist support for our campaigns, and make our voice heard in protecting what we value. The Network is the Headingley residents’ association which, for 15 years, has campaigned on behalf of its members on issues that affect our quality of life: alcohol licences, planning, rubbish and litter, housing, transport, anti-social behaviour, parking, and the destruction of our neighbourhood. Its members are kept informed through the website www.headingley.org, its four e-mailing groups and the newsletter Headway. Along with other campaigning groups, we have succeeded in restricting the growth of ‘vertical drinking’ bars, late-night licences for bars, pubs and fast-food outlets, and on-street drinking. We helped incubate the ideas that became Headingley Renaissance Strategy and Action Plan, Headingley Development Trust, the CIP and DPP. We organise Celebrate Headingley in September every year and Open Gardens in June. We support the LitFest in March, Headingley (Music) Festival in May, and various arts and craft fairs, all of which serve to keep social links alive and establish new ones.

the popular iTunes method of accessing music. Under the new system, library members will be able to log-on to the ‘virtual bookshelf’ on their home computers using their existing membership details and then choose from a wide range of titles. Once a book is chosen it can then be easily downloaded and transferred to a portable device, in a similar way to an iPod. The user has one week to read the book before the access to the text runs out. The system can be accessed 24 hours a day and will be in place for two years initially, with continuous improvements in terms of the number and range of titles available.

Leading the Fight Against Muscle Disease Relying almost entirely on voluntary donations and legacies to fund its work, the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign leads the fight against muscle disease. It provides free care and support for babies, children and adults affected by the disease, funds world-class research to find treatments and cures, provides grants towards specialist equipment like powered wheelchairs, and campaigns to raise awareness and bring about change. The terms ’muscle disease’, ‘muscular dystrophy’, ‘neuromuscular conditions’ and ‘neuromuscular disorders’ all describe a group of conditions which affect either the muscles, such as those in the arms and legs or heart and lungs, or the nerves which control the muscles. Most conditions are progressive, causing the muscles to gradually weaken over time. People’s mobility is affected and most conditions lead to some sort of disability. The severity of conditions and how they affect individuals varies greatly from person to person. eeds Makkah Mosque on Thornville Road, LS6, recently opened its doors and invited members of the wider community in to learn about the Muslim faith and culture, with a view to celebrating the city’s diverse and multi-faith spiritual heritage. As well as holding Yorkshire’s largest Islamic exhibition, a special ‘Connecting Cultures’ session was held for members of local statutory bodies, education, voluntary, community and faith sectors. Guest speakers included

The Home Secretary, Alan Johnson, Hilary Benn (Minister for Environment and Rural Affairs) and Greg Mulholland MP. During the course of the open days, over one thousand people visited the Mosque. For some, this was their first ever visit to a mosque and many found the experience very interesting, some even returned for a second visit! “The unanimous feedback was that the experience was informative, enjoyable and spiritually uplifting”, said Qari

Asim, the Imam at Makkah Masjid. “It is hoped that by providing an opportunity for people of other faiths to explore the beauty of Islam within the setting of the Mosque’s traditional architectural designs and contemporary style, the whole community has benefited from greater respect and mutual understanding.” For more information contact Imam Muhammad on 07980 657 140, email mail@ makkahmasjid.co.uk, or visit www.makkahmasjid.co.uk

Let Me Speak! A collaborative performance between Headingley and Osmondthorpe ................................................................................................................................................................................................... to disturb their comfortable places and to develop their thinking and writing skills. In order to achieve this it was decided by all parties concerned to join forces and launch the Let Me Speak! project.

A

s the WEA tutor for both the Osmondthorpe Resource Centre (ORC) and Headingley Community Centre creative writing classes, Becky Cherriman has been aware for some time that the two groups, independently, have expressed a desire to ‘change gear’ – to push their boundaries;

As a starting point and stimulus both groups visited the Thackray Museum. This was followed up by a joint working session, hosted by ORC, where they worked alongside each other to share and challenge their perspectives of the world they live in, and finally to write about it.

“I am continually surprised, moved, impressed and challenged by these writers”, said Becky. The culmination of their journey together will be a performance of their written pieces and the production of a joint anthology containing their most accomplished work. The performance will take place on Thursday 3rd June at 12noon in The Banqueting Suite, Leeds Civic Hall. Entry is free and there will be light refreshments. WEA gratefully acknowledge the contribution from Leeds City Council and Thackray Museum in supporting this project.

The Leeds Arts Centre Presents “The Deep Blue Sea” London,1952. In a shabby west London flat, a mysterious woman makes an unsuccessful attempt at suicide. She is Hester Collyer, a judge’s wife who has run away with a much younger man, Freddie Page. Freddie is an ex-RAF pilot who is finding it hard to adjust to the postwar world and whose passion for his older lover is dying. Hester’s desperation deepens when, after her suicide attempt, her husband turns up, asking her to come back. This twentieth century classic has been a career high point for Peggy Ashcroft, Penelope Wilton and Greta Scaatchi. It’s the masterpiece of Terence Rattigan, one of Britain’s great playwrights, and a skilful and moving critic of the British way of sex. ‘The Deep Blue Sea’ runs from Wednesday 30th June - Saturday 3rd July, 7.30pm at The Carriageworks, Millennium Square, Leeds, Tel: 0113 224 3801. Tickets: £10/£7

You only need to turn on your TV to see how much we love our homes. Shows like Grand Designs and Extreme Makeover have become hugely popular as more and more of us look to improve where we live and stamp our own personality on the space. Given the state of the housing market, and the prospect of some good weather, this could be the perfect time to undertake a little renovating, revamping or refurbishment!

Add Some Stylish Upgrades

There are all sorts of ways you can change your home now, from minor DIY jobs through to knocking down walls, which often makes more financial sense than moving house. The possibilities are endless when it comes to upgrading your home and adding value, so that when you do think about moving, you’ll be ahead of the game. Interior Architectural Designer, Penelope Tiffney, of Spatial Designers in Harrogate says improving your current home “can simply be upgrading and modernising the windows and heating systems, overhauling the old plumbing and electrical wiring.’ Adding stylish upgrades, such as designer radiators or a new en suite, make a good visual impact and are popular, modern and stylish.

There’s never been a better time to improve your home. Kitchens have always been a great family gathering place. Updating it by removing partitions so kitchen and dining room are open plan creates a great sense of space and modern living.

When looking into home renovations, Penelope recommends assessing the work carefully by getting a professional evaluation from an architect/ building surveyor. After getting a good, reliable estimate, you should investigate planning permission and also look into grant funding to see if there’s any available to offset the costs. This is especially worthwhile looking into if any of your renovations fall in line with green initiatives. Indulge Yourself!

Consider a Conservatory or Loft Conversion

“The addition of an extension, conservatory or loft room is a great asset”, says Penelope. “Additional rooms can increase the value of your property when you come to sell and allow you to accommodate your current needs.”

Adding a specialised room to your house can make a nice little project but also boost the value significantly. Wet rooms within bathrooms have become very popular, but converting rooms, lofts or basements to accommodate your hobbies is also a great idea. Perhaps a games room, crafts room, art or music studio would add an exciting new element to your home.

Micro-generation is fast becoming a buzz word. With the cost of energy soaring and concern for the environment mounting, more and more people are looking at what steps they can take to reduce their carbon footprint and ultimately save themselves some money. Micro-generation, small scale power generation designed to provide power for a family home or small business, is one answer. The Government recently introduced ‘Feed-in Tariffs’ (FITs), a Clean Energy Cash Back scheme to provide an incentive. Under this scheme, energy suppliers make regular payments to householders and communities who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) panels or wind turbines. The scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity generated by the system, as well as a

separate payment for the electricity exported to the national grid. The payments are index-linked, tax free and guaranteed for 25 years and are in addition to the savings made by using the on-site generated electricity. Sounds like a win-win situation! As soon as the system is installed there will be a reduction in your electricity bills, in addition to the income from your Feed-in Tariffs. Daniel Lang of Electrotect UK Ltd., who specialise in solar photovoltaic renewable energy installations, regularly advises people on how to apply for the FITs scheme and the expected rate of financial return. “We believe we have a responsibility to the environment to cut down CO2 emissions”, said Danny. “This scheme has made micro-generation accessible to a far wider range of people.”

37

Two people who recently took advantage of the scheme are Suzanne and Donald in Adel. “We thought it was about time we put our money where our mouths are!” said Suzanne, who leads the Green Team at St Chad’s Church. “We are delighted with our new system. It took just a couple of days to install, with minimum fuss, and it was generating electricity immediately – even on a dull day! And, financially, the rate of return is far better than other investment opportunities.” “We use the latest, mainly German, technology”, continued Danny. “It is guaranteed for 25 years – giving you plenty of time to not only recoup your investment, but

also make money. and add value to your home. The lightweight panels are fairly unobtrusive and can be fitted to either roofs or walls. The DC electricity created

household distribution board. Our installation causes little disruption and, depending on the size of the job, can be up and running well within a week.” Perhaps soon, microgeneration will be incorporated into every new build and we will all become less dependent on power generated using fossil fuels or nuclear. That’s an idea we might have laughed at ten years ago.....it seems far more achievable now. For more information, or a free energy consultation, contact:

Horsforth Life reader Ann Blackburn was happy to talk to Energy Saving Trust advisors during their recent door-to-door project in the area. Their aim was to help Horsforth residents save on their annual fuel bills, whilst reducing the community’s CO2 emissions. Ann had solar thermal panels installed five years ago and recently installed solar photo voltaic panels (electricity). “It is a large investment but certainly a worthwhile one” said Ann. “And now the Government’s ‘Clean Energy Cashback’ incentive pays for generating your own electricity. I will earn approximately £600 a year for my 1.5kw system.” Ann has already seen a drop in both her gas and electricity bills. Restaurant Review: Shashlik

40

Shashlik – the new Indian Food Bar on Low Lane, Horsforth, has only been open a few months but is already attracting lots of attention.

Life& Style

he restaurant, which is quite compact and can seat up to 35 people, has a smart, contemporary look and feel – stylish black leather chairs butt up to marble style table tops, and the light tiled floor adds to the clean-cut, modern feel. A large picture window into the kitchen dominates the back wall and that’s where it’s all happening! As orders are fed through you can see the chefs set about preparing the various dishes. This team of experienced chefs trained both in the UK and in Bangladesh and India. The head chef has over 15 years’ experience. The Tandoori chef boasts 18 year’s experience and he’s still only 36! We were treated to a quick demonstration in the preparation and baking of a garlic nan in the Tandoori oven – you know how partial I am to a good nan.....and this was good! Bangladeshi/Indian Fusion The Shashlik menu is a fusion of Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine. Everything is freshly cooked with authentic spices and ingredients. Names like Jaflong conjure up images of that beautiful area in Bangladesh and the citrus type of fruit specific to that area that

flavours Jaflong dishes, giving them a distinct slightly sour and very spicy flavour. We started our meal with popadoms and pickles and moved on to delicious starters of sizzling, spicy King Prawn Shashlik (£4.20) served with tomato, onion and green peppers, and Mater Paneer on Puri – chick peas fried in herbs and spices scattered with paneer, beautifully presented on a light puri (£3.20). Hot, Spicy and Delicious As main courses we chose Chicken Handi (£6.20), apparently one of their most popular dishes, which came in a thick hot and spicy sauce. Jack declared it was absolutely delicious, with ‘complex’ flavours – which turned out to be a special mix of spices and chilli pickle – the chef’s secret recipe! I wallowed in a bowl of King Prawn Jaflong (£7.95) – really spicy with that tell-tale slightly sour Jaflong flavour and a serious amount of sauce! Perhaps I should have had some rice to go with this, but I thoroughly enjoyed dunking pieces of nan – in between cooling sips of a fabulous mango lassi which was so thick it was reluctant to leave the glass.

Shashlik doesn’t serve alcohol but is happy for you to bring your own and, conveniently, there’s an off-licence just across the road. What’s more, Shashlik don’t charge any corkage fee. A Brisk Takeaway Service The takeaway side of the business has already taken off. They have installed a comprehensive computerised booking system which can recognise regular customers and their preferences and streamlines the whole process. The restaurant is open from 5 – 11pm Monday to Saturday , and 2 – 9pm on Sundays. Shashlik Nights – £10.95 per person on Sundays and Wednesdays in June! Four course meal including dessert. Children under 12 £5.95.

Bird Watch

with Stan Kenyon

.............................................................................................

N

o sound is more evocative of spring and early summer than the call of the cuckoo and the song of the skylark. Cuckoos are medium-sized and slim with long tails and pointed wings. They are blue-grey above and on head and breast with dark-barred undersides. Birds of open country, they have become scarce but still occur in the upper Dales. More numerous in the hills and fields are skylarks. Their dreamy

and silvery song is delivered high in the sky as they face into the wind. Robust buffbrown birds, streaked above and on the breast, they have short whiteedged tails. A characteristic upland bird is the meadow pipit, one of the species targeted by the cuckoo in the nest of which it will lay one egg. Upon hatching, the young cuckoo ejects the eggs or young from the nest and is then reared by the host parents. Meadow

pipits are small, streaked brown birds with longish tails and a hesitant flight.

Steam Trains to Scarborough Residents of North Leeds may have been surprised recently to hear a long unfamiliar sound; that of a steam train making its noisy way up the long climb from Leeds to Horsforth. This was “The Scarborough Spa Express” which runs midweek during the summer. The train leaves York at 9.20am, then follows the ‘York circular’ route stopping at Knaresborough, Harrogate and Leeds, then back to York and on to Scarborough. In the evening, it leaves Scarborough just before 6pm and reverses the morning route getting back to Leeds at about 8pm. It offers a good

Make it Al Fresco!

.................................................................. Hailstones on May Day and skiing in the Cairngorms – it’s not right! You can almost feel people chomping at the bit to get out there and enjoy a bit of sunshine. Every little eatery with a square foot of space outside has put one or two tables out in anticipation. Being able to eat out is a real indication of summer – pub beer gardens and courtyards will be overflowing and people will be throwing themselves on the grass in city parks. Head to The Dales and discover fabulous al fresco eating at pubs and restaurants, or set out with a picnic to the lake at Malham or the Coast.

Forget the Teddy Bears! Picnics are great – they can be carefully planned or totally spontaneous. C r a n b e r r i e s Delicatessen (0113 230 0293) in Adel regularly packs hampers for flash events or a tasty sandwich selection for a family picnic. Pickles and Potter (0113 274 6376), near the lights in central Headingley, has a special deal for anyone considering watching a game of cricket, open air theatre or just a treat in the park – two sandwiches, crisps and drinks, a salad to share,

some wonderful cake, all in a jute bag for just a tenner (there’s a deluxe version at £17.50). The Village Bakery in Bramhope (0113 284 3278) are dab hands at preparing picnics with super fresh breads and cakes high on the menu. Swing by Pookie and Grumps (0113 258 8811) on New Road Side in Horsforth and choose from their great selection of charcuterie, cheeses, olives, breads and freshly prepared salads, for that impromptu, extended lunch. I love summer salads..... potatoes tossed with fried onions, bacon and mayonnaise (or for a flashback to the 50s substitute salad cream!); tins of cannellini, kidney beans or chic peas mixed with tuna, capers, olives, flat leaf parsley and a quick vinaigrette; rice with raisins, walnuts and rocket with a walnut oil dressing; or couscous with cherry tomatoes, loads of chopped mint and an olive oil and lemon dressing.

8 chicken drumsticks. Marinade: 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger,

2 crushed cloves of garlic, ½ tsp chilli powder, juice 1 lemon. Glaze: 4 tablespoons mango chutney, 1 tablespoon yellow mustard seeds. Combine the marinade ingredients and toss the drumsticks in them, coating evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Combine glaze ingredients. Throw drumsticks on barbecue and brush with glaze throughout. Should take about 15 – 20 minutes on a hot grill.

GardenRound-Up

By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural Society

....................................................................................................................................................................................................

The late Geoff Hamilton reckoned that June was the best month of the year. Borders are awash with flowers, and on a warm day the air is filled with scent of roses and honeysuckle. Check your borders and make sure that flowering plants such as delphiniums are well staked to stop them from flopping. Keep up with the weeding and dead heading – it will pay off. Plant up containers for the patio or bare spots in the garden. And, it’s still not too late to plant hanging and wall baskets. Prune spring flowering shrubs, if you haven’t already – ribes and philadelphus benefit from a hard pruning. Check and tie in rambling roses and any other

climbing plants, daffodil foliage will have died down, so you can tidy up those areas. If they are growing in grass, the mower can now go over them. Keep mowing the lawns and trimming the edges. It’s surprising how good it makes the garden look. Start sowing seeds of biennials, wallflowers, sweet williams etc, They can be started off in pots and transplanted into the ground when large enough, 2-3 inches apart, ready to plant where you want them in the autumn. Anemone corms (to bloom in autumn) should also be planted now. There is still time to sow beans. Choose a sunny spot and support them with canes as they

grow. Courgettes and squash can be planted outdoors now too and beetroot seeds. Harvest salad crops that are ready and pick leaves off the different lettuces you have grown instead of the whole plant. They last longer and will re grow unless you have room to sow in succession. Keep an eye on ponds or pools and clear any overgrown pond weed as fish can get caught up in it. Leave it beside the pond for a day or two so that any creatures in it can get back into the water. When all that is done it’s time to sit down and enjoy a drink in the evening sun!

Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) Artist

He was acknowledged as the master of poetic moonlight and night-time effects, transforming the familiar, everyday landscapes of Leeds into something mysterious, romantic and beautiful round 1865 the young artist John Atkinson Grimshaw came with his wife Fanny to live in Cliff Road, Headingley, a newly-developed quiet lane leading up to Woodhouse Ridge, away from the dirty, smoky town. Here, in their charming new villa with its long back garden, they could enjoy country walks along the Ridge to the beautiful Meanwood valley (he was to paint Fanny overlooking the view by Batty Wood) and on to Adel woods. There they collected wild flowers, mosses, birds’ eggs to bring home for him to paint. Nearby they could wander the quiet lanes and ginnels of Headingley Hill, with its grand mansions, high stone walls, and tall trees – scenes to which he would often return in his later paintings. Born in Leeds, the son of a railway worker, he had started work at 16 as a railway clerk but began painting in his spare time – it is said his disapproving mother threw his paints in the fire. Although he had no professional training, his work won admirers and when he was only 25 he daringly gave up his job to devote himself to painting, with Fanny’s backing. His pictures, strongly influenced at this stage by the PreRaphaelites, attracted some wealthy patrons, and he was able to afford

to move from town to Headingley. Over the next years he visited the Lakes and the coast and extended his range of subjects and techniques, painting his first keynote moonlight scene (Whitby Harbour) in 1867. He won increasing praise and exhibited widely in the town. By 1870 he felt secure enough to move on, renting the romantic, seventeenth century Knostrop Hall (now demolished), which was to feature in several of his paintings. It remained his home for the rest of his life, though for a time he had a second home in Scarborough, the unique ‘Castle-bythe Sea’. In the 1870s and early 80s he was Leeds’ favourite homegrown artist, his new paintings eagerly awaited and enthusiastically reviewed. So popular was he that the Corporation commissioned him in 1872 to paint three scenes of Roundhay Park as publicity for its proposed purchase. He was acknowledged as the master of poetic moonlight and night-time effects, transforming the familiar, everyday landscapes of Leeds into something mysterious, romantic and beautiful – Boar Lane, Park Row, the suburban lanes of Roundhay and Headingley. All this had great appeal for the new moneyed middle-class of Leeds, who had an insatiable appetite for his work. His reputation spread to London, where he exhibited at the

Royal Academy and for a time had his own studio. But life had its dark side for him and Fanny, who had to endure the early death of nine of their fifteen children. Alongside these personal losses, he ran into deep financial problems around 1880 (apparently through trying to help a friend) and the bailiffs moved in to Knostrop. He was put under constant pressure to paint and sell more work to make ends meet and the quality suffered, though he still produced some strikingly successful paintings. Then, in 1893, he was suddenly taken ill and a few months later died of cancer. He was still only 57. For a time his work was disregarded, but now he is a favourite again, his moonlit lanes, his dark, glowing river and dock scenes, his charming domestic interiors, reproduced everywhere on prints and cards. Several of his well-known paintings are in the City Art Gallery, and sometimes an unknown work makes an appearance: only last year a picture came on the market which had been in the same family since he handed it over in 1883 in lieu of rent – ‘Autumn Afterglow, Headingley’, an evocation of the suburban landscape here that he knew so well. While living hand-to-mouth in New York, I somehow managed to bag myself a great apartment on the Upper West Side. It was owned by an old lady who’d moved back to Puerto Rico years before. Technically, I was ‘sharing’ the apartment with another girl, but she was really living elsewhere with her much older boyfriend and just kept our apartment as a ruse, should her parents ever come visit from New Jersey. So there I was, in 2004, 23 years old with a huge two bedroom apartment in New York, all to myself. The only problem was no one had really ............................................................................................. taken care of it. The living room furniture consisted of a TV sitting on top of a mini-fridge and a beat up recliner chair. The dining room lay empty and the kitchen cupboards were stuffed full of old letters. I spent two whole days cleaning the place before it was even sanitary enough to move in. The outside looked luxurious, but the inside was more like a crack house than a premium New York rental. One day, as I sat in the living room, I heard what sounded like running water in the kitchen. I went to check it out and what I found was the stuff nightmares are made of. There was a leak, coming from the upstairs apartment. My ceiling was leaking water and...roaches! Oh dear God, it was hideous! Naturally, I screamed like a teenager at a New Kids on the Block concert circa 1991 and called the Superintendent of the building, in tears. They sent an exterminator. In the 45 minutes it took him to get there, I battled the roaches with cans of Raid in each hand. When he arrived, the exterminator calmly went about his business. So relaxed was he that he felt it appropriate to ask me out on a date. I couldn’t shake the feeling that the roaches would follow us, so declined. So you see, Sex and the City lied to us – New York isn’t all glitz and glamour, there’s a good few roaches mixed in there too. For more go to www.bangsandabun.com

Education in West Park

.............................................................................................

In 1911 the Edwardian rooftops did not have Lawnswood school hovering above them. It would be 20 years before the Ladies’ Educational Institution, later renamed the Leeds Girls’ School, Leeds Girls’ Modern School and eventually the Lawnswood High School moved to the West Park Greenfield site, along with the boys of Leeds Modern school (separate segregated single-sex schools, one must stress - leastways between 9am and 4pm). But as the census of 1911 shows West Park was not without its links to education and schools. On Horsforth Lane (now called Spen Road), overlooking what was later to become the Lawnswood school fields, lived Harold Wager one of the old-style fearsome HMIs (His Majestys’ Inspector of Schools). A few doors away at the top end of Thornfield Road , also keeping a watchful eye on the Lawnswood School site, was another HMI Mr Gray. Indeed, Thornfield Road was a veritable educational focus for the area. It was also home to Mr Raundrup, the Headmaster of a boy’s preparatory school, possibly based on Otley Road on the site of the Ascot Grange hotel. Whilst operating from number 24 was a preparatory school. This home and private school, was run by Mary Louisa Barton, a certified teacher who had previously taught in small village schools in Bedfordshire and Staffordshire. 52 Sound& Vision She & Him ALBUM Volume Two Domino Records

She & Him are countryfolk troubador M. Ward and darling of the quirky indie-inflected Hollywood comedy world, Zooey Deschanel. As the album title reveals, this is their second release and it’s an assured, slickly produced, sun drenched collection of breezy pop. The opening strains of Thieves puts one

in mind of Sam Cooke and the album retains a vintage soulful feel throughout. When Hollywood actors cross over into music, their attempts are usually perceived as lame vanity projects and more often than not, critically dismissed. Here, however, one gets the impression that Deschanel is an experienced and confident songwriter (she penned all but two of the album’s tunes) and perhaps her acting career was an afterthought. The strong sense of melody and accomplished vocal arrangements are complemented by Ward’s subtle and sensitive country tinged

FILM

Four Lions Directed by: Chris Morris Starring: Riz Ahmed, Kayvan Novak, Nigel Lindsay, Arsher Ali

I’ve long considered Chris Morris to be one of the most brilliant and dangerous practitioners in British comedy. Along with Armando Ianucci he showed a keen ear and perceptive wit in skewering the double-speak of news media and political commentary in his scathing satirical television shows, Brass Eye and The Day Today. His old cohort, Ianucci, also recently made his first foray into feature films with the outstanding In the Loop. With Four Lions, Morris again displays his knack for extracting

comedy gold from the darkest subject matter, in this case, suicide bombers. The result isn’t as whip smart as Ianucci’s film but it is hysterically funny, played more as knockabout farce than razor-sharp satire. The central joke is that these would-be jihadists are bumbling incompetents, not merely stupid and misguided, but utterly moronic and inept. We first see them making a pig’s ear of their martyrdom videotapes. It’s clear from the outset that we’re not dealing with terrorist masterminds here. Omar’s crew includes his imbecilic brother, Waj, the equally mentally challenged Faisal, whose attempts to train kamikaze crows proves futile, and Barry, a white, English convert to Islam who’s convinced the most radical and provocative statement would be to blow

up a mosque. After Omar and Waj travel to a terrorist training camp in Pakistan, where they embarrass themselves in a quite spectacular fashion, they return to the UK to find that in their absence Barry has recruited rapping wannabe mujahedeen, Hassan.

With Four Lions, Morris again displays his knack for extracting comedy gold from the darkest subject matter

June 2010 Sound & Vision 53 .................................................................................................................................................................................................... Four Lions Cont.

After much comical infighting and squabbling, Omar formulates a plan to bomb the London Marathon, where they can conceal their explosives under costumes and the TV coverage will ensure maximum impact. Given the sensitivity of the subject, and Morris’s purported months of in-depth research, one would have thought he

might have delivered an incisive examination of the underlying motivations and far reaching effects of the situation. Instead he sidesteps any attempt at half hearted polemic or moralising in favour of playing strictly for laughs and this is undoubtedly to the film’s credit. The focus here is more on the absurdity inherent in all human endeavour, no matter how potentially atrocious.

The cast all deliver note-perfect comic performances helped no end by a hilarious script cowritten by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain of the sublime Peep Show. Four Lions is certainly the most consistently funny comedy I have seen recently. It’s been some time since I laughed this long and hard in the cinema. I’m tempted to return for a second dose.

56 Younger Life

The Enduring Memories of our Schooldays Having taught in Leeds for 33 years, most of them in Leeds 16, it is not an uncommon occurrence for me to meet and talk to former pupils (in fact a number of them are now Adel parents!).

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

When conversation turns to the ‘old days’, they don’t remember my enthusiastic maths teaching or my wellplanned science lessons. Their memories are of trips to France and Belgium, outdoor activity residentials, end-of-year musical productions and concerts, rugby matches in Leeds and beyond, and the enjoyment, challenges and friendships that these activities engendered. I guess the same is true for me as a teacher. I do remember pupils who were talented artists, able

mathematicians, had a flair for languages or wrote fantastic stories or poems. However, memories are clearer of the pupils who performed well on the sports field, who sang wonderful solos, who were natural actors, those children who gave something extra to the school. Unfortunately many of our 21st century schoolchildren do not get the same opportunities that their counterparts in the late 20th century did. ‘Probationary’ teachers (as they were then called) were asked which

clubs they intended to run. Nowadays, teachers have a much greater administrative workload than they did 30 years ago, there are more meetings to attend after school, and ‘health and safety’ has a much higher profile. Whilst school sports teams do not have the comprehensive fixture lists of yesteryear and some of the more adventurous outdoor activities are in decline, I am pleased that there are teachers, support staff and parents too who are still willing to give up their time after school

and at weekends to provide some extra activities for children. I would not want these experiences and memories to be denied to future generations. Mind you, I have to admit that some of my older former pupils do also remember my 1970s fashion statement of moustache, mullet hairstyle and flares!! Marathon Des Sables Success!

Active

Back in April, we told you about Ian White, a dentist from Meanwood who was preparing to do the Marathon des Sable, the toughest footrace on earth. We’re pleased to report, that Ian completed the race and made it home in one piece!

He sent us daily updates while on his amazing journey, which we posted on our website. Here in the office, along with the many of you who read about his ordeal on our site, we cheered him on. As the tales poured in about the difficulty of carrying his six days worth of supplies while he ran, hallucinating about seeing checkpoints in the distance, battling through sandstorms, draining blisters, losing toenails and running incomprehensible distances in blazing heat, we were absolutely bowled over by Ian’s courage and determination. Ian ran the marathon for Facing Africa, a charity that treats sufferers of NOMA, a gangrenous infection of the face that many children die of. Those who survive often have severe facial deformities. The charity improves their lives through reconstructive surgery.

You can still sponsor Ian by going to the Facing Africa website and clicking ‘donate online’. Then click ‘I’m sponsoring a competitor’ and enter ‘Ian White’. Facing Africa website is www.facingafrica.org

A Life on the Ocean Wave! Ocean rower and environmental campaigner Roz Savage is currently on the final stage of her attempt to become the first woman to row solo across the Pacific. A latecomer to the life of adventure, Roz worked as a management consultant for 11 years before setting out in a new direction - in a rowboat. In 2005, she competed in the 3,000mile Atlantic Rowing Race. In 2008, she became the first woman to row solo from California to Hawaii. In 2009, she continued her Pacific bid by rowing from Hawaii to Kiribati. The third and final stage of her Pacific row started

on 19th April, as she attempts to row from Kiribati to Australia. Roz Savage is a United Nations Climate Hero and an Athlete Ambassador for 350. org. She has been listed amongst the Top 20 Great British Adventurers by the Daily Telegraph. Her mother, Rita, lives in Cookridge and gives illustrated talks about her daughter’s adventures. She doesn’t charge a fee, but would accept a donation towards Roz’s costs. For more information, contact her on 0113 267 76397 or savage.rita@ gmail.com.

On Yer Bike! This month gives you the perfect opportunity to get out in the fresh air with National Bike Week. Needless to say, there are plenty of events around Leeds which are sure to make you want to go pedal pushing!

Leeds Student Walks 1080 Miles for Local Charity Leeds student Tony Jacklin is taking on a challenge of a lifetime and walking over 1000 miles, Land’s End to John O’Groats, from June to August to raise money for local Yorkshire charity, the Forget-Me-Not Trust. The aim of the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust is to raise funds to build and run a respite hospice for children with life limiting conditions. The Trust needs to raise over £3million to build a house for respite, emergency and end of life care. It will provide services 365 days a year, completely free of charge, to children and their families from the Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield areas of West Yorkshire. “I’m absolutely delighted to be able to raise money for such a worthwhile cause whilst achieving one of my life ambitions,” said Tony, who joins Eversheds law firm in September. The Trust is close to its aim of commencing the build this year and Tony aims to raise in excess of £2000 in support. To sponsor Tony you can visit his Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/TonyJacklin. Every penny will make a difference to the families that will come to rely on the service the Trust will provide. Best of luck Tony!

Leeds Cycling Action Group, together with Edinburgh Bike Co-op are doing an on-road, four mile ride to Roundhay Park and back on the 13th. You could join in on a nice evening ride from the Oakwood Clock to Harewood on the 17th. There’s also a bike orienteering score event on the bridleways and quiet lanes around Otley Chevin, or perhaps a nice ride around Meanwood is more your taste. For more information on the range of bike events going on around the city, go to www.leeds.gov.uk/bikeweek
