OCTOBER 2010

NORTH LEEDS LIFE MAGAZINE | CONTENTS

Dear Readers I know it’s scary, but we are whispering ‘Christmas’ this month! Well, you can never start too soon, can you? First of all take a little time to make sure you look and feel great for the Christmas season and everything else will fall into place – we give you some tips. Other events this month tie in with this theme – there’s Leeds Loves Shopping, and The Victoria Quarter is celebrating 20 years with an exciting programme of events. Then Jacob Rosen continues with his seasonal food theme in Jacob’s Larder; Otley Victorian Fayre marks its silver anniversary and St George’s Crypt celebrates 80 years of service to homeless and disadvantaged people in Leeds. There’s news of a new play to premiere at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, and another about ‘the most dedicated football fan’ premieres at Clarence Dock. There’s music and people climbing hills and swimming ‘the Channel’ for charity; there are bands playing for Oxjam; award winning local film makers; and strange goings-on at the Royal Armouries at half term! Our deadline for news for the November issue is 1st October, and it’s 1st November for the December edition. Keep your news rolling in – we love to hear from you.

SILVER ANNIVERSARY FOR OTLEY VICTORIAN FAYRE This year, to celebrate its 25th year, Otley Victorian Fayre has decided to launch a new charity award scheme. Each month in the run up to the Fayre, the Committee will donate £100 to a charity or public organisation. All such organisations in Otley and the surrounding area are invited to submit their request for funding. Perhaps you are a sports team in need of new equipment, a cub/guide group, or a PTA in need of extra money for a specific project? Please write in no more than 200 words how your organisation would benefit from £100 of funding and send it to the Committee Secretary alison. friebe@leeds.gov.uk or post it to Otley Victorian Fayre Award Scheme, 6 Trinity Rise, Otley, LS21 1RG. All applications will be considered and the Victorian

Fayre Committee will vote to decide on the beneficiary of the month. This year’s Fayre is on course to be the best yet! In a change from its usual timing, it will be held on a Sunday 12th December from 2-8pm. It is hoped that by holding it on a Sunday it will encourage more trade for local businesses, reduce travel problems for commuters and be more of daytime family event. For further information please contact Sara Quin, Publicity Officer, on 01943 463 928, Alison Friebe on the above email address, or visit www.victorianfayre.co.uk

LABOUR LEADER EXCLUSIVE FOR LEEDS TRINITY TRAINEE

OTLEY CHAMBER HOSTS ANTIQUES FAIR Otley Chamber of Trade asked the public what goods were difficult to source from the otherwise varied selection of retails outlets around the town, and an antiques shop was high on the list. To address this, they have decided to host their very own Antiques Fair! “We encourage residents to shop locally to support our local economy”, said Trevor Backhouse, Chamber President. “We’ve been able to match unusual requests with local retailers for the most part, but an antique shop has eluded us, so we’re temporarily filling the gap ourselves. If successful, it may encourage a dealer to open a shop in one of our few remaining empty shops.”

Labour leadership contender David Miliband was grilled by one of Leeds Trinity’s trainee journalists on the campaign trail recently when he visited the campus to speak with party members. Mr Miliband held a question and answer session before being quizzed by Danny Wright, a BA (Hons) Journalism student at Trinity. Danny, 20, is about to enter his final year and he spoke exclusively with the Shadow Foreign Secretary about a range of topics, including university places and 08 October 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk

funding, and his vision for the party. The visit was a homecoming for Mr Miliband, whose family lived for a while in Horsforth and he went to Benton Park School in Rawdon. “I was delighted to get the chance to interview David Miliband,” said Danny. “I really enjoyed the experience and am grateful to have had the chance to speak with political big-hitters during my time here.”

The Fair will take place at The Courthouse on Sunday 17th October, 10am - 4pm and will feature furniture, porcelain, long case clocks and a valuation service so you can have your own treasures assessed. For further information, or to suggest other items that you would like to be able to buy in Otley but can’t seem to trace, contact Trevor Backhouse on 01943 467927.

COMMUNITY NEWS

St George’s Crypt is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a challenge to the people of Leeds. The challenge, which will be launched on 14th October, the actual anniversary date, is called ‘80 Campaign’. It has three main aims: • To raise awareness of the Crypt for everybody in Leeds • To motivate people to pledge to raise £80 (or equivalent in time or kind) • To encourage more people to volunteer It hopes to raise £80,000 by the end of July 2011 and is planning to recognise everybody who meets the challenge with an Awards evening, where certificates and special prizes will be awarded in a range of categories. Already people are thinking imaginatively about how they can make their contribution to 80. There will soon be a dedicated section of the website where people can submit ideas and see what others are doing. So far, a trustee has committed to walking

canals with a target of raising £1,000; there will be a meal for 80 in the Crypt at £10 per head; and plans are afoot to challenge 80 top designers to produce iconic posters for sale on the website. “We are delighted to be launching this important initiative marking 80 years of constant service to homeless and disadvantaged people in Leeds”, said Chris Fields, Crypt Chief Executive. “The Crypt provides a lifeline for up to 100 people every day of the year. We believe it is important to reaffirm our work through telling our story to every sector of Leeds society – we are truly a Leeds charity working in Leeds for Leeds people.” To keep us to date with developments, visit www.stgeorgescrypt.org.uk. If you would like to get involved in 80, please contact giving@ stgeorgescrypt.org.uk for more information and advice.

“THE CRYPT PROVIDES A LIFELINE FOR UP TO 100 PEOPLE EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR. WE BELIEVE IT IS IMPORTANT TO REAFFIRM OUR WORK THROUGH TELLING OUR STORY TO EVERY SECTOR OF LEEDS SOCIETY – WE ARE TRULY A LEEDS CHARITY WORKING IN LEEDS FOR OPLE. LEEDS PEOPLE.”

COMMUNITY NEWS

OTLEY WINS SILVER IN YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM COMPETITION The final results of the Yorkshire in Bloom competition were announced recently at the Royal Armouries. In its tenth year, Otley in Bloom (OIB) was pleasantly surprised to find that the town had been awarded its first ever Silver Gilt for its overall performance in 2010. The Yorkshire in Bloom judges praised the efforts of all In Bloom teams across Yorkshire. One of the judges, who also judged Otley 10 years ago, recognised that OIB’s efforts were now producing visible results. Yorkshire in Bloom was very positive about the involvement of various community groups. As coordinators of the town’s entry into the competition, Otley in Bloom would like to thank all businesses that had floral displays, supported them financially or helped with watering, and all the individuals who also contributed. They would also like to thank a number of council departments for their ongoing support and quick response to the queries, particularly Neil Wilson and the Parks Department; Iain Plumtree and Otley Town Council; Streetscene Services. This was a wonderful achievement! OIB Taskforce is made up of people of all ages and takes on a wide range of activities, from planting, digging and weeding to clearing up throughout the town. If you would like to get involved, call 01943 462 390 or visit www.otley.co.uk/oib.

ONE OF THE JUDGES, WHO ALSO JUDGED OTLEY 10 YEARS AGO, RECOGNISED THAT OIB’S EFFORTS WERE NOW PRODUCING VISIBLE RESULTS

POOL WI UPDATE In July we enjoyed our indoor garden party. The weather was chilly and damp but everyone enjoyed refreshments provided by members. The competition of ‘a posy in a wine glass’ for the Elizabeth Joyce Trophy was won by Denise Lewry for the second year running. All the entries were excellent. In August we visited Ripley Castle and learned that the Ingilby family has lived there for 26 generations! The Castle tearoom provided delicious refreshments. And, in September Fred Butler gave a talk entitled ‘Up the Snicket’. Pool Wi meets at Wharfedale Court, Main Street, Pool. For more information, call Janet on 0113 203 7557 or myself on 0113 284 2976. Judith Davey President Pool W.I.

...

IS COMING

It is awful to talk about it so soon, but it is merely weeks away and will suddenly creep up out of nowhere. Anyone who was a Scout or Girl Guide in their youth knows the importance of being prepared, so in this first installment of our Countdown to Christmas, we’ve consulted the experts to give you some tips on how to spruce up both yourself and your home for the festive season. Inevitably there is always a year’s worth of events crammed into the run up to Christmas. Work parties, house parties, your social club will all have a get together – and there will be a plethora of pictures taken and posted all over social networking sites so the memories live on. In that case, you must be looking your best.

A NEW FITNESS

R E G I M E If you have a stubborn 10 pounds you’d like to lose to fit into your party dress, or you just need more stamina while you’re out Christmas shopping, now is a great time to get into a new fitness regime. Keiron Igwe of Diligent Health gave us his top five tips to get in shape: GET MOTIVATED Want to look great in your size ‘X’ outfit? Write it down and stick it on your fridge. Get the dress out and hang it somewhere you’ll see it every day. BURN CALORIES WITH FULL BODY EXERCISES All physical activity is good, but some works faster than others. Exercises like squats and lunges burn calories, while kneeling pushups tone your arms. FIND A FRIEND TO EXERCISE WITH You’ll keep each other focused, be less likely to skip workouts, and it’s more fun. CLEAR OUT THE CUPBOARDS Avoid temptation! Throw out everything that could stop you reaching your goal – biscuits, sweets, chocolates, fizzy drinks, desserts, ready meals and processed foods. This is only for the next 10 weeks, so be ruthless! STOCK UP ON FOODS THAT SUPPORT YOUR GOAL Fill your shopping trolley with things that’ll help you feel great in that outfit. Lean meats, fish, fruit, vegetables, nuts, olive oil, oats and brown rice should be top of the list. Your trolley should be a rainbow of colour.

ESTABLISH A SKIN CARE ROUTINE E

................................................ We all want to look positively glowing during the holiday season. It’s never too early to start thinking of changes you can make to your skincare routine. The right primping and preening is bound to get you noticed come party time. The staff at Shrine Salon and Spa in Headingley gave us some beauty tips

WE HAVE MOVED CALL IN AND SEE OUR NEW, LARGER SHOWROOM! .........

A mineral salt scrub will help too, as it has nourishing oils, and an ultra rich moisturiser willl leave you feeling great. If your summer tan is a distant memory, check out a tanning treatment. Fake Bake and San Tropez will all make you look lovely, but Xen-Tan gives you a great colour and smells gorgeous too!

ALL AT GREAT VALUE PRICES .........

Carpet prices start from £6.99 sq. mtr .........

CALL IN TODAY The must-have accessory for the Christmas season is Minx nails. Nail coverings which dry instantly and last, there are all sorts of designs to match your mood, or outfit.

Tel: 0113 259 0464 .........

All that Christmas shopping can leave you a little bit stressed, so treat yourself to a massage – hot stone, aromatherapy or Swedish are great for relaxation.

ONE THING YOU SHOULD DO THAT IS ABSOLUTELY FREE IS DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. IT KEEPS YOU ALERT, BUT ALSO STOPS DRY SKIN PATCHES

TOP ... TIPS ... ... Harry Boocock, from The Hair Studio in Far Headingley (0113 274 0513), gives us five tips for getting your hair looking great for the party season.

Always book your Christmas Hair appointment in good time as this is the busiest time and you don’t want to be disappointed.

If you are going to an event and want ‘party hair’ such as an ‘updo’ check that your stylist is experienced in this area.

If you use salon products, Christmas is always a good time to stock up as most product companies produce Christmas packs which includes a free product.

If you are thinking of a restyle for Christmas, talk it over with your regular stylist. You don’t want to make a mistake that could affect your Christmas festivities!

With colder, windier weather coming, do a deep conditioning treatment to protect your hair against the elements.

FIND THE RIGHT OUTFITS

SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME

Once you’ve got your body, skin and hair looking great, you need some super stylish outfits to see you through the season. We asked Rutherford Rowley, Personal Shopping Manager at Harvey Nichols, to give us his top tips on looking great this season.

Now we have all you ready for the party season, what about those evenings when you invite people around to your home? Let’s make sure it looks great too. You don’t need to spend a fortune (of course you can if you like!) but certain changes can transform the look and feel of a room.

............................................

Asymetric: Whether it’s long or short, a one shoulder dress offers a fresh alternative ternative to strapless. Dannii Minogues Project ect D does some great ones with prices starting g from around £200 Embellish: Sequins, feathers, furr and hat day embroidered pieces are great for that to night look. Take your work suit and plet add a sequined blazer, feathered caplet or some fab opulent jewellery and as if by magic, your 9-to-5 look will have ve a whole new lease of life! Trousers: This season trousers are back and they are not just for the daytime. They come in every style from the skinny through to really flattering 70’s style bootcut which both lengthens the leg and shrinks the bottom….genius! Animal print: Take one little black dress and with a pair off leopard print shoes you have a ‘stand nd out from the crowd’ look. Dress coat: This party season you ou don’t have to be cold to look cool. Dress coats are a must to get you though the party y season and make sure you look sexy and stylish even when you are waiting for the night i h bus!

...............................................

Lighting: Placing a few perimeter lights on end tables or ad adding free-standing lamps can make a impact on the feel of a room. If you have huge impac low ceiling ceilings, install spot light to give a roomier And, dimmer switches can be adjusted to feel. And suit the m mood. Ac Accessories: Updating cushions, throws, rugs aand candles are an excellent – and inexp inexpensive – method of giving a room a qui quick makeover. With great ranges availa available in shops like Esta in Otley, Marg Margot & Miller in Chapel Allerton and majo major stores. You can give the room an entir entirely different look simply by changing the accessories. Feature Areas: Every room should ha have a focal point; a feature that the ey eye gravitates towards. A wall can be p painted or papered in a contrasting sshade. Or, opt for some dramatic wall ar art and pick up the colours in your ac accessories. R Refresh your Furniture: Think about recovering your furniture rather than recove replacing it (talk to someone like Abbey replacin Uphols Upholstery for advice). New loose covers are another option; or seek out a colourful throw that wil will complement your colour scheme. Mirro Mirrors: Mirrors can dramatically give the impressio impression of more space. They can bounce the light arou around, and with strategically placed fairy lights at C Christmas you can create an instant party atm atmosphere. FIRST TIME AUTHOR GETS SLOT AT ILKLEY LITERATURE FESTIVAL FRINGE Gary Dunnington

NEW PLAY RECREATES LIFE OF THE MOST DEDICATED FOOTBALL FAN A new play dramatising the life of one of Leeds United’s most devoted followers will be staged at Clarence Dock this month. Gary Edwards, a painter and decorator by trade, has missed just one game since 1968! He has followed the club around the world and the play, based on his successful books, ‘Paint It White’ and ‘Second Coat’, is full of humour, glamour, friendship, travel, romance and action. On his amazing journey he has been shot at, run over and robbed! “The play illustrates the highs and lows of dedication, passion and loyalty”, said producer Les Rowley. “It is an insight into a hobby taken to the extreme, a travelogue, a ‘road movie’ for the stage.” “There are so many stories from all over the world”, added Gary. “I am excited to see how it will translate to the stage. Unfortunately, Brad Pitt wasn’t available for the part and we have had to make do with the next best thing!”

Sean Hornby, a resident of Otley, recently published his first book entitled ‘Their Spirits, My Demons’, which discusses his life, growing up in a chaotic, alcoholdriven family. It covers issues like bullying, the importance of role models, alcoholism, bereavement and loss. Alcohol was responsible for the deaths of a number of family members, including his parents. However, the book is far from being a ‘misery memoir’. Without these experiences Sean would probably never have ended up in his chosen career – he is a mental nurse! Sean has been given a slot at this year’s Ilkley Literature Festival as part of the fringe event. He will be reading from and discussing his reasons for writing it on Monday 4th October, 9pm at Ilkley Playhouse. For copies of Sean’s book go to www. theirspiritsmydemons.co.uk or call 01904 431 213. You can also contact Sean via the site.

WITHOUT T THESE EXPERIENCES EXPERIEN SEAN WOULD WO PROBABLY PROBAB NEVER HAVE H ENDED UP IN CHOSEN HIS CHOS HE IS CAREER – H MENTAL AM NURSE! N

That next best thing is Leeds actor Gary Dunnington, another lifelong Leeds United fan. Gary has appeared in numerous TV, theatre and film roles, including Coronation Street, Casualty, and Sharpe’s Challenge with Sean Bean. The play will be directed by ‘Birds of a Feather’ actor, Alun Lewis. The play, Paint It White opens at Unit 32 Clarence Dock on Wednesday 6th October and runs for 15 performances until 23rd October. Tickets (£10) available online (www.paintitwhite.co.uk) or on the door. Further information: 0113 216 3681 or 07976 746 777. 28 October 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk

The Chorus will be holding an open rehearsal of Messiah at St George’s Church, adjacent to Leeds General Infirmary, at 7pm on Thursday 25th November. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in joining The Phil to experience singing this wonderful choral work with this renowned chorus. They are also delighted that one of their progenies is returning to perform in the December concert: Philip Smith went to Birmingham Conservatoire in 2004 and has sung throughout Europe, at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, and in Billy Budd this season. Sadly, Christopher Johns, Deputy Chorus Master, will leave Leeds at Christmas to take up the post of Director of Music at Leicester Cathedral.

STANZA STONES PROJECT LAUNCHES AT ILKLEY LITERATURE FESTIVAL Stanza Stones, an imaginative 21 month project in collaboration with leading poet, Simon Armitage, will be launched at Ilkley Literature Festival on 9th October. Inspired by London 2012, it is funded by Legacy Trust UK, Yorkshire Forward and Arts Council England and is part of the ‘imove’ programme, which celebrates the relationship between people and their moving bodies through a series of exciting arts projects.

On Friday 8th October, for one night only, venues including theatres, galleries, shopping arcades, museums and city streets will host a plethora of strange and scintillating performances, art installations, exhibitions and participatory projects, all of which are free! Light Night showcases the work of artists, performers and organisations, both established and emerging. Most of the work is new and much is designed specifically for the venue in which it is shown. It’s all about participation – you can barter with apples in an imagined city, take part in a board meeting, build a cairn, play mixed reality games or simply to meet with friends. Expect to find dancing in the Town Hall cells, statues wrapped in winter knits, storytelling under a duvet, a performance in a swimming pool, theatre in the Victoria Quarter and opera in the Library. Light Night is co-ordinated by the Arts & Regeneration Team from Leeds City Council in partnership with organisations and individuals from across the city. For more information visit www. lightnightleeds.co.uk

Stanza Stones will centre on a poem specially written by Simon Armitage and inspired by his response to the wild landscape of the Pennine Watershed. This will act as a springboard for groups of young writers aged 13-25. They will have the opportunity to attend master classes with Armitage, create their own work and experience the outdoors as a group. It is hoped that later stages of the project will offer young dancers and filmmakers the opportunity to interpret the poems, and see Armitage’s poem inscribed on a series of Stanza Stones, forming a permanent trail across the Watershed, which runs from Ilkley to Armitage’s home town, Marsden. The Festival will get the project off to a flying start with a strand celebrating ‘Words, Land and Landscape’, which will include events with archaeologist Francis Pryor and geologist Richard Fortey and a taster session for teenagers interested in being involved in Stanza Stones via a new weekly group for young writers. WILLIAM NICHOLSON IS ‘MADDER THAN HELL’! Sarah Esdaile, Director

William Nicholson

Crash Premieres at The Playhouse ‘Crash’, William Nicholson’s latest play is to have its premiere at the West Yorkshire Playhouse this month. This is a play that is likely to strike a nerve with many people, addressing as it does, the recent financial crash and all its implications. Other plays that have tried presenting the case have often fallen short and failed to really engage the audience. No chance of that with Crash. William Nicholson was ‘mad as hell’ about bailing out the banks and bankers bonuses and he

WILLIAM NICHOLSON WROTE CRASH ALMOST AS A VEHICLE FOR HIS OUTRAGE ABOUT THE CRISIS sure ‘wasn’t going to take it any more’! He wrote Crash almost as a vehicle for his outrage about the crisis. Here we have a real story, strong characters and relationships that draw you in to the crisis and how different people dealt with it. We spoke to director Sarah Esdaile, who recently directed the highly successful ‘Death of a Salesman’ at The Playhouse. “Crash is really a political call to arms”, she said. “We have been told that these are issues too complex for us to understand, but Bill’s treatment of the subject really clarifies things. It extends beyond the issue of a small group of people earning huge amounts of money, to what

anyone is actually worth. What value does art actually have? It is epic in what it deals with and so relevant.” William Nicholson is a playwright, screenwriter and novelist. His work includes the play and screenplay Shadowlands, which was Oscar-nominated. It is great news that Crash is to be premiered here in Leeds. Here is a play that is likely to challenge anyone to stay sitting on that fence. Crash is at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from 16 Oct – 13 Nov. LOCAL LAD LANDS PART IN DR WHO Growing up in Ilkley, Danny Horn spent much of his time in local drama groups, The Ilkley Playhouse and Ilkley Upstagers. It didn’t take him long to realise that acting was the only thing he had any interest in pursuing. He recently graduated from Central School of Speech and Drama and instantly landed a role in the Dr Who Christmas Special. We spoke to him to get his take on this exciting time.

THE SETS WOULD TAKE MY BREATH AWAY EVERY DAY AND THE PROFESSIONALISM OF EVERYONE WAS INSPIRING Have you always been a big fan of Dr Who?

Which actors do you admire?

Yeah, I actually really love it. A friend introduced it to me when I was 18 (a little too old? Nah), and I’ve been a fan ever since. My flat mate and I tune in religiously every Saturday before we go out.

That’s a really tough one. There are all the obvious ones - Pacino, Brando etc as well as Day Lewis (obviously). At the moment, I’m pouring over the work of Ben Whishaw and Andrew Garfield. Two young British actors who I think are so fresh and exciting.

What was the audition process like and how did you find out you got the part?

Do you have any exciting projects coming up? The main thing that I remember is the speed of the whole thing. I finished Central on Friday, got the audition on Monday, got the part on Wednesday and on Thursday I was in Cardiff doing the read through, sitting next to Matt Smith and Michael Gambon! It was a whirlwind.

The great thing about a job like Doctor Who is that it can open doors and lead to other things. Right now I’m auditioning a lot and meeting some of the most exciting people in the industry. Hopefully something great is round the corner - until then I’ll play my guitar, write and paint.

What was filming like? It was amazing. Everyone was so wonderful, friendly and helpful. It was my first big gig so Matt (Smith) and Michael (Gambon) really looked out for me. The sets would take my breath away every day and the professionalism of everyone was inspiring. 32 October 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk

Comforting hues of yellow, red and orange surround us and cooking this month should reflect this. It should be warm and consoling, appreciative of the brisk outdoors. The crunching underfoot of fallen leaves invokes nostalgic joy, and so should your suppers. Not that I am encouraging stomping your stews and trampling your terrines. Red and golden beetroots sit beautifully on a plate, and are very versatile. They can be simply roasted and devoured in a warm salad along with their tops, and possibly some walnuts and goats cheese, or included in a number of meat and fish dishes – particularly game or oily fish, such as the Scandinavian triumvirate of beetroot, mackerel and horseradish. With Halloween rapidly approaching, the tender flesh of pumpkin is ubiquitous – pumpkin pie being a favourite across 34 October 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk

SEAFOOD, AFTER THE BARREN SUMMER MONTHS, IS ALSO REACHING ITS PINNACLE; MUSSELS IN PARTICULAR ARE AT THEIR SUMPTUOUS BEST

France and, of course, America. As well as the sweeter spices used here, such as cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg, pumpkin is a great vehicle for eastern flavours. Its natural sweetness balances well with heartier, more aromatic spices, which are always welcome as the evenings turn colder. Try a pumpkin curry with plenty of ginger and cumin, or a Laksa, with chilli, lemongrass, coriander, and coconut milk. Seafood, after the barren summer months, is also reaching its pinnacle; mussels in particular are at their sumptuous best. The most common varieties are the blue (or common) mussels from Europe, and the green-lipped mussels from New Zealand. I would go for the former as they are nearly always fuller in flavour. When preparing mussels, first check they are still alive by tapping gently on a surface, or squeezing lightly - if the mussel doesn’t close it is dead and

should be discarded. Also throw any that are closed and feel inordinately heavy as they are probably filled with mud or sand. Remove the beard, by pulling firmly towards the hinge end of the mussel, then clean the shell of parasites by scraping with a short sturdy knife. They can then be thrown into a pan with a little simmering liquid, shaken (with the lid on), and they will steam open in minutes. Ones that do not open should also be thrown away. Indubitably the most satisfying part of cooking mussels is the delicious liquor left after steaming. The best way to eat it is simply with crusty bread or some chips to soak it all up. Be inventive with your flavours (more ideas on the website!) There’s more to mussels than simply ‘a la marinière’, although there is no shame in falling back on this delicious classic. BANGS & A BUN

.............................................................................................

Back in August, Cosmopolitan Magazine announced their first ever blog awards. The blogosphere went crazy as readers nominated their favourite sites. When Cosmo announced their shortlist, whittled down from 15,000 nominated blogs, Bangs and a Bun was on it. Woo hoo!

I travelled down to London for the awards ceremony, which was held at the uber-flashy Sketch (which is très posh, don’t you know?) and met all the other nominees. This was a room full of the crème de la crème of the blogging world. It was all a bit intimidating.

A hush fell across the room as they began to announce the winners. My category, Sex and Relationships, was second up. I crossed my fingers and said a prayer to my God (Manolo Blahnik, obviously). Then they said it ‘Runner Up: Bangs and a Bun’. The winner was a blog in Texas. I briefly considered violently overturning the table and demanding a recount, but I thought I’d accept my second place with class.

And after all, out of 15,000 blogs, second place ain’t half bad. Plus, everyone knows, ‘you don’t mess with Texas.’ .............................................................................................

GARDENROUND-UP

By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural Society

....................................................................................................................................................................................................

It’s time to prepare your containers for winter. Look out for small Vibernum tinus plants, Skimmia Japonica, Rubella, Lavreola, and four Hedra Helix, which has green/ yellow edged leaves. Plant these into a large container where they can remain for several years in a rich potting mix and keep moist. They need semi shade and should be fed with a high potash fertiliser monthly. A combination which survives winter weather well in a sheltered spot, keeping the soil dry in

freezing conditions, is Winter Cherry, Leucothe, ‘scarletta’ (to compliment the cherry) with Hedra Glacier to soften the edges. And, don’t forget Winter Pansies – add Grape Hyacinths, Iris Reticulata with Ivies, and Juniper Squamata which spreads out its aromatic silver blue foliage. Wear gloves when handling juniper as it can cause skin rashes. All of these can be planted in the garden when they become too big for the containers. Fill hanging baskets

ready for spring with Pansies, Viola, Bellis Daisies and Ivy, and shallow pots with Crocus, Scillas and miniature daffodils. Most plants can be potted and grouped around the garden or on balconies. Children can have fun planting their own pots and tubs. Tidy up the garden ready for winter, cutting out any straggling shoots and taking down any dead stems where you don’t want the plants to free seed. If the weather is fine trim the lawn, setting the blades

a little higher. Mix some grass seed with compost and scatter over bare patches. Clear leaves out of garden ponds and place a net over to stop further leaves getting in. If you have children, let them help with gathering leaves and find a quiet spot to make a home for hedgehogs – a small cardboard box left open at one end and filled with leaves. A bundle of short lengths of hollow cane wedged into the fork of a tree or on a ledge can provide a winter home for ladybirds or even bees.

with Stan Kenyon As autumn arrives, ducks are losing their summer moult feathers and emerging in resplendent breeding plumage. The most familiar is the mallard, ancestor of the domestic duck. Unmistakable is the metallic green head, narrow white neck ring and purplish-brown breast of the male. Teal are the smallest duck, fast and agile in flight. Head pattern is again distinctive, the male chestnut with green sides. At a distance it looks dark with a bright yellow stern patch. Both mallard and teal are surface-feeding ducks. Tufted ducks are the most widespread of the diving ducks. The male is black with a rectangular white patch on the flanks and a long drooping crest. All these resident wildfowl frequent water bodies whether park lakes, rivers, reservoirs or sea coasts. Numbers are swollen by winter visitors, often in large flocks. While so many birds are sadly declining, these ducks are on the increase, although numbers fluctuate from year to year.

DESIGNER ON THE RISE Local designer, Darecca Stainforth’s career is off to a good start. When her graduate collection was noticed by the organisers of Leeds Fashion Show, she was invited to show her work at this year’s highly anticipated show. “I admire a strong personal style”, says Darecca. “My Autumn/Winter 2011 collection, ‘Azure Fabrication’, is based on contemporary architecture and its construction lines. I like to mix the textures of different fabrics and make interesting contrasts which stimulate both the look and feel of the garment. In doing this, I believe I’m making the garments come to life.” Since graduating from Leeds College of Art in June, Darecca has been busy working for a pattern cutting company who make patterns for major high street brands like Topshop and River Island, which will surely help her hone her craft. In the future, she hopes to establish her own label and bring her designs to the masses. For more information about Darecca, you can contact her via dazarockz@hotmail.com

During the month long holy festival of Ramadan, British Muslims took time to remember the 20 million people affected by the disastrous floods in Pakistan. You may have seen on our website that Leeds Makkah Masjid, in Hyde Park, raised over £30,000 for the flood victims over the course of the holy month. Their target was to raise £1,000 per day during Ramadan and they successfully exceeded this. The funds raised will be sent to the affected areas in Pakistan through the Leeds Lord Mayor’s Pakistan Flood charity appeal.

The effects of the floods in Pakistan have now exceeded the combined effects of three of the most devastating disasters in recent history; the Tsunami of 2004, the Kashmir earthquake of 2005 and the Haiti earthquake earlier this year. E.F. Schumacher pioneered the ideas of sustainable development, human-scale technology and ecological spirituality in the 1960s and 70s. Today these ideas are more relevant than ever, as consumerism and the pursuit of endless economic growth bring us close to ecological catastrophe. The conference will explore a wide range of creative and practical responses. Through workshops, Open Space and World Cafe sessions, they will look at the individual and communal changes needed to build a healthy, fulfilling and balanced way of life for all. Themes will include re-localisation, transition, permaculture, how we work, social justice, the effects of marketing, psychological aspects of change and more. SCOTT PILGRIM V THE WORLD

SALT

Directed by: Edgar Wright Starring: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman

Directed by: Phillip Noyce Starring: Angelina Jolie, Live Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor

Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel is hip, vibrant and tremendous fun. A dizzying mash up of old school video games, comic book aesthetics and rock ‘n’ roll wrapped in a romantic comedy. Cera stars as Scott, an early twenty-something living a slacker lifestyle in Toronto and playing bass in his band, The Sex Bob-Omb. Scott is dating a high school girl named, fabulously, Knives Chow, much to the derision of his band mates and sister. All bets are off for this fledgling, non-physical romance, however, when Scott encounters and immediately becomes besotted with the foxy, super cool Ramona Flowers…… (cue Bob Dylan song). He attempts to impress her with obscure trivia about Pac Man and, learning she’s a courier, orders a book at random from Amazon so she’ll deliver it to his house. Scott’s affections are tentatively reciprocated but Ramona informs him that in order to win her love he must first defeat her seven evil exes. Known as ‘The League of Evil Exes’ they’re super-powered former boyfriends (and one girl from Ramona’s experimental phase) intent on destroying Scott Pilgrim. To lend some superhero gravitas, ex number three is played by Brandon Routh who was the Man of Steel in Bryan Singers fairly dismal Superman Returns. Here, his superhuman powers are derived from the moral superiority of veganism. The Sex Bob-Omb are competing in a battle of the bands presided over by the head of The League, Gideon Graves. It’s at these gigs where most of the showdowns occur – choreographed, effects-heavy martial arts sequences that resemble arcade game classics like Street Fighter. The music’s pretty good, too, with The Sex Bob-Omb’s tunes composed by Beck and Broken Social Scene, Frank Black and T Rex elsewhere on the soundtrack. The film features wry pop culture references and solid comic performances. Yeah, Michael Cera’s working that awkward geek thing again but at least here he also gets to kick some ass. Most of the laughs belong to Kieran Culkin as Scott’s cool, gay roommate. It all makes for an exhilarating, visually inventive and chucklesome experience.

This mildly entertaining but ultimately disappointing thriller has Angelina Jolie as Evelyn Salt, a C.I.A agent who is forced to go on the run after being outed as a Russian spy by a defector she’s interrogating. Apparently, her mission is to assassinate the Russian prime minister. This is quite a shock to everyone, especially Salt, who seems to have completely forgotten she’s part of an elite, highly trained spy program which has infiltrated American life and remained undercover for years. The trailer pitched this as a sort of female Bourne vehicle but the film is a long way off achieving that kind of quality. The title role was originally intended for Tom Cruise, which makes sense when you see the amount of running Jolie has to do. Ever noticed how much that toothy Thetan runs, in almost every film he’s running all over the shop. He can barely make it through two lines of dialogue without breaking into a gallop. For a sprint-heavy action movie he’d be a shoe in, but then they went and did a gender switch on the main character. I’m glad they did as I find Jolie much easier to watch than Cruise who kinda freaks me out ever since I saw a video of him talking about scientology (yikes!). Though competently handled, it’s fairly run-of-themill Hollywood action-thriller fare, wildly implausible with ridiculous action set pieces. Aside from the odd decent chase sequence there’s not a great deal to recommend Salt. I hope the hinted at sequel fails to materialise.

THOUGH COMPETENTLY HANDLED, IT’S FAIRLY RUN-OF-THE-MILL HOLLYWOOD ACTIONTHRILLER FARE, WILDLY IMPLAUSIBLE WITH RIDICULOUS ACTION SET PIECES

Mafia II BBFC 18 Xbox 360/ PS3/PC

Simon Cartwright and Jessica Cope with the central character of their film.

In Mafia II, 2K’s Czech development studio invites players to take on the role of Vito Scaletta, a down-on-hisluck hoodlum who finds himself on the wrong side of the law. Following a short stint with the American Army, Vito returns home to learn that in Empire Bay his reputation as a war hero can go a long way in certain

lines of work… Mafia II features a fabulously realised vision of post war America. Empire Bay is a city teeming with life and people go about their business in a way which has rarely been so convincing. Unlike in games like GTA, the city itself changes with the years and each passing season. Supported by a strong script and fabulous voice acting, Mafia II does a tremendous job of representing movies it is clearly been inspired by, and whilst not as classy as the Godfather or as Glitzy as Casino, it certainly makes for an enjoyable, challenging and violent romp. For adults only. The inevitable tie in to Disney/Pixar’s latest Toy Story movie has finally arrived on home consoles, and Pixel Junkies have been invited to find out what the fuss is about.

FILM MADE IN POTTING SHED WINS AWARD! The animated short film The Astronomer’s Sun recently beat a strong shortlist of contenders to take the inaugural Northern Futures Award in the film category. This stunning film was actually made in a potting shed in Ilkley! It was animated frame by frame with stop motion puppets, with special effects made by using a combination of optical, hand-drawn and digital processes. It marks the directorial debut of Simon Cartwright and Jessica Cope, and was produced by David Bunting and Peter Kershaw of Duchy Parade Film, Harrogate, on the Digital Shorts scheme run by Screen Yorkshire in partnership with Channel 4 and The UK Film Council.

Toy Story 3 BBFC N/A

The film was also nominated for Best Short Film in the Public Choice category in the British Animation Awards earlier this year, and was shown at The Seattle International Film Festival, The Canadian Film Centre Worldwide Short Film Festival, the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Half-heartedness is the theme throughout Toy Story 3, with many missed opportunities and ‘also ran’ levels which you have seen and done a thousand times before. Despite this, the game is colourful and features all your kids’ favourite characters, so should represent good value for the under twelve age group.

This is the year of the Northern Futures Awards, which are open to artists, designers and filmmakers aged 21 – 40, born, living or working in the North of England. For further information, visit www. northernfutures.co.uk. or www.screenyorkshire.co.uk

I’d love to say that the Wii version we Wii (reviewed,) reviewed is drastically different from Xbox 360/ the Xbox and PS3 versions that many PS3/PC people will buy, but sadly, very little has been made of the movement technology, with only simple jumps represented by a shake of the controller.

ALBUM REVIEW ARCADE FIRE – THE SUBURBS

Merge Records ....................

By now you’ve probably heard how great this new record from Arcade Fire is. Three albums in, the band is sustaining the momentum that began in 2004 with the their stunning debut, Funeral. In this age of the download, it’s refreshing to see a band using the album format to work thematically, while the songs stand alone as rock/pop gems. Taken as a whole, the cumulative emotional impact of the albums produced by this unique group is undeniably impressive. Funeral was a work born out of personal tragedy and loss. Despite, or perhaps because of this, the feel of the album was defiantly life affirming. It explored ideas of neighborhood and community, youth and age and resilience in the face of life’s trials and tribulations. The follow up, 2006’s Neon Bible, was an even weightier affair, permeated with millennial angst and a sense of apocalyptic foreboding.

By Brendan Campbell

With The Suburbs, the band has returned to the more nostalgic mood of their first release. The idea is of the suburbs as the place one spends their youth longing to escape from, waiting for life to begin. The reflective tone of the songwriting here recasts the suburban setting as a time and place infused with magic and poetry, the world beyond vast and full of promise. Fans of the band will be pleased to see that they’ve lost none of their ambition or sense of drama. By turns wistful, mournful and joyous, the songs on offer here suggest a longing to return to the innocence of childhood while unflinchingly tackling life head on. The disarmingly jaunty piano riff of the opening title track belies the subtle poignancy of the lyrics and segues into the coiled spring agitation of Ready to Start. It’s nice to see the band giving a respectful nod to The Boss on the Springsteen influenced Modern Man and City With No Children. Elsewhere, the deceptive orchestral intro to Empty Room gives way to thunderous,

punky cacophony, echoed in Month of May. Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) sees the unexpected adoption of elements of electronica. One of many highlights is the soaring Rococo, initially expressing disdain for ‘the modern kids’ it emerges as a paean to age, decay and regeneration. The album works as a kind of song cycle with lyrical and musical motifs subsiding and returning throughout. It ends with a reprise of the opening song, giving one the sense of the completion of an epic journey and returning home. Many have said that in The Suburbs, Arcade Fire have crafted a modern masterpiece and reached a career high point. Clocking in at just over an hour and spanning sixteen tracks, the album is surprisingly free of filler and the emotional intensity and consummate musicianship is maintained throughout. Another brilliant offering from a band that remain streets ahead of their contemporaries. If you count David Bowie among your fans you must be doing something right. Photo courtesy of Merge Records

STUART LEACH SWIMS THE CHANNEL FOR ASPIRE Adel resident, Stuart Leach, is swimming the distance of the Channel in his local pool to raise money for Aspire – one of the UK’s leading spinal injury charities. He joins 7,000 other swimmers around the country, who have to complete 22 miles over 12 weeks and is hoping to raise £1,000.

SAILING BROTHERS HEADED TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Benjamin and Matthew Lulham-Robinson are just 11 and 13 years old, yet these sailing brothers from Burley-in-Wharfedale recently won the European Mirror Junior Championship at Sligo Yacht Club in Ireland. Riding high from that success, they’re now hoping the wind in their sails will carry them all the way to the World Championships in Australia in December. Coming 5th overall out of a fleet of 75 boats in the senior competition in Sligo (against competitors in their 20s and 30s), has also given the boys a boost. But it’s not just the brothers involved – sailing is a whole family affair. The sails used on the boat are designed and made by mum, Heather, and dad, Peter, on the boys’ bedroom floor! The family is looking for sponsors or partnerships to help Benjamin and Matthew compete on a National and International level and get to the all important World Championships in Oz. If you’re interested in sponsoring the Lulham Robinson brothers, contact the family on lulhamrobinson@yahoo.co.uk or 01943 864619 56 October 2010 | northleedslife.co.uk

“Having lost nine stone in the last five months through the LighterLife diet I needed to start swimming again to maintain the weight loss and get fit”, Said Stuart. “From playing rugby at school I am aware of the terrible impact spinal cord injuries can have, so combing the two made perfect sense.” This is the first time Stuart has undertaken the Aspire Channel Swim. Whilst it will be hard work, he anticipates huge personal benefits. Your donations will make a huge difference to those living with spinal injury. Four people sustain a spinal cord injury every day and are told that they may never walk again. Aspire provides essential services such as accessible housing, grants, IT facilities and practical support. If you would like to support Stuart, please donate online at www.justgiving. com/Stuart-Leach. For more info, visit www.aspirechannelswim.co.uk or call 0800 0370 880

Local yoga teacher, Jan Coates, and Steph Carncross, a paediatric nurse at Leeds General Infirmary, have spent hours on Hill Sixty in Roundhay Park. Their challenge was to run up and down the hill 1,000 times – a task which took them around 15 hours – and to raise money for Gwalior Children’s Hospital. Gwalior Hospital Charity provides a wide range of specialised medical care and health educational services in the Gwalior and Chambal region (one of the poorest areas in India), caring for the poor, needy, destitute, disabled and underprivileged, especially children, women and the elderly. It also supports children in schools and orphanages, runs a special needs school, and is building a new orphanage to accommodate 200 children. Jan and Steph leave for Gwalior soon, to spend a month as volunteers at the orphanage. If you would like to support this project you can do so easily on-line at www.justgiving.com/Jan-Coates.
