BECOME A FRIEND OF THE HOLLIES AND HELP IMPROVE A WONDERFUL FACILITY The Friends of The Hollies (the lovely park off Weetwood Lane) is a group of dedicated volunteers who are committed to the maintenance, preservation and enhancement of the natural beauty of the park’s woodland area. They organise regular ‘working parties’ to carry out various tasks, in conjunction with Leeds City Council gardeners, to improve the appearance of this local beauty spot. Work involves clearing rubbish and debris at nominated sites with a view to re-planting and rejuvenating. The Friends generally meet on the second Saturday of the month at 10am in The Hollies car park and work for 1 ½ - 2 hours depending on the project. At the end of the session refreshments are provided including tea, coffee, cold drinks and home-baked cakes! This gives everyone the chance for a well earned break and a chat! To date they have cleared several ditches and drainage channels, removed rubbish and dead foliage, and uncovered a path which had been impassable. With more volunteers they could achieve even more. Helping for even half an hour could make a huge difference and would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to join The Friends of The Hollies (even if you are unable to help with manual work), please e-mail your details to friendsofthehollies@ gmail.com Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in contributing to the upkeep of this wonderful facility for the benefit of all its users. There is a small annual fee which goes towards purchasing replacement shrubs and trees as required.

Re-ablement Service Helps to Get Angela Back on her Feet
Like many people, Angela enjoys socialising with friends and going out for meals with her husband. But she couldn’t have done either of these things a few months ago. Angela suffered a bleed to the brain and a stroke which left her unable to walk, wash herself properly or use a knife and fork. She spent time in St James’, in the Intensive Care Unit at Leeds General Infirmary and in Chapel Allerton Rehabilitation Unit. The SkILs team, part of Adult Social Care’s Re-ablement Service, became involved after she left hospital. The team helps people to regain the ability to do some or all of the activities they could do prior to an accident or illness. The

She is keen to stress that it’s very much a team effort. Angela has also had help around her home with assistive technology, such as a grab stick, a walking trolley, and has recently had a bath lift fitted. “I’ve come on in leaps and bounds since I had the walking trolley”, she said, “and I was dreaming of a bath!” From twice-daily visits from the team and having to live downstairs, Angela now needs only one visit a

ASD APPLIANCES
I was disappointed to learn that West Yorkshire Fire Authority has proposed substantial cuts to our local fire station.
www.digitelsystems
They recently announced that we would lose a fire engine from active duty at the station, and this would be replaced by a much smaller response unit. We’re also going to lose 12 fire-fighters. The second fire engine at the station will remain but will be unmanned, and will serve only as a back up when the other engine is out of action. I think these proposals will leave the service under resourced to a potentially dangerous degree. They also need to be seen in the context of the wider programme of fire station closures across West Yorkshire. Gipton, one of the nearest alternative fire stations, is to close completely, and will be replaced by a station further out at Killingbeck. This will further stretch resources. The fire authority hopes that these measures will save up to £4 million a year across West Yorkshire. I understand the need for all public services to make savings, but I believe these proposals pose too much of a risk, not just to Meanwood but also the many other parts of north and north east Leeds that are served by the fire station. These proposals are not yet a done deal. There is an opportunity for local residents to influence the decision by participating in the consultation that is currently underway. The final decision remains that of the West Yorkshire Fire Authority, but a strong display of public opposition may well cause them to think again. I would urge anyone who feels strongly about this issue to make their feelings known. Responses should be made in writing to stephen.hardy@westyorksfire.gov.uk or

HO! HO! HO! and Help St Gemma’s! Join hundreds of Santas for a fantastically fun and festive day on Sunday 11th December.
All Hail Headingley Ale Festival! With the growth of independent breweries in the local area, and the fantastic reputation that many of them already have, is it any wonder that Ruth Edwards (previously landlady at The Chemic Tavern), and her partner Kevin Cooke, who runs 309 Studios on Meanwood Road, decided to stage the Headingley Ale Festival? The festival is being held at St Michael’s Parish Hall, St Michael’s Road, in Headingley on 9th, 10th and 11th December and will serve only Yorkshire brews. “There are loads of amazing new local breweries emerging and the micro brewery industry is bigger than ever at the moment”, said Ruth. “We have opted to select our range from Yorkshire breweries only. Even within the boundaries of the county, there is so much variety and so many wonderful flavours that narrowing the selection down to 45 ales is not easy!”
Sign up for the Leeds Santa Dash in aid of St. Gemma’s Hospice, a one mile sponsored dash through Leeds, dressed as Santa. This is sponsored event, so you can help raise money for the excellent patient care the Hospice provides. Each participant will receive their very own Santa suit to run in on the day. For full details please call 0113 218 5505 or visit www.st-gemma.co.uk
Children and Christmas Go Together
Yorkshire also boasts a fantastic selection of real cider producers, and there will be a number of ciders to tempt people too. Local selected breweries include: Ridgeside Brewery – Meanwood; Kirkstall Brewery; Burley Street Brewhouse; Leeds Brewery Wharfebank Brewery – Otley. Other Yorkshire favourites are Ilkley, Saltaire, Elland and Copperdragon, and newer include Revolutions, Magic Rock Brewery, Brass Castle and Geeves. The list continues to grow! To keep up with developments, visit their website at www.headingleyalefestival.co.uk and be sure to drop into the festival to enjoy this celebration of Yorkshire beer.

Legion Calls on Government to Support Bereaved Families The Royal British Legion is the nation’s leading Armed Forces charity providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces, past and present, and their families. It is currently celebrating its 90th Anniversary Year. Many people don’t realise that it spends nearly £1.4 million a week on helping both the serving and ex-Service communities. Campaigning for the Armed Forces family is as important now as it was in 1921. At the moment the Legion is calling on Government to do all it can for bereaved Armed Forces families, specifically by appointing a Chief Coroner to spearhead reform of the inquest system.
Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, attended a recent event at the House of Commons organised by The Royal British Legion to highlight the importance of supporting bereaved Armed Forces families and learnt more about the Legion’s work. “The Legion does very important welfare work for some of my most vulnerable constituents in both the serving and ex-Service communities”, said Greg. “It is vital that we are there for those serving in current conflicts, and especially for the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. They deserve as much support as we can give them.”

Flocks of rooks and jackdaws, separately or together, perform acrobatic flight manoeuvres as they assemble to forage in the autumn fields. Rooks are off-black medium-sized birds with greyishwhite skin round the bill base and ragged thigh feathers. In contrast, jackdaws are smaller and more compact with shorter legs and bill and a grey patch on the back of the head but otherwise black.

Two of the commoner members of the crow family, they are birds of open cultivated country. They roost in large gatherings in woods from which they disperse daily to agricultural land. Rooks nest colonially in their rookeries in tree tops in open country or in villages or the edge of towns. Also colonial, jackdaws nest in holes in old trees and cliffs and often in towns and villages, typically in chimneys and church towers.

These cheerful and noisy birds are readily seen permanent residents. Longer term trends show a steady decline in the population of rooks, but jackdaw numbers continue to rise, though rooks remain the commoner bird.
THE U FILES THE FINANCIAL CENTRE OF WEST PARK
When you go back 100 years, you can come up with some interesting comparisons with today, not least with regard to the country’s financial situation. In 1911 the then Liberal Chancellor, David Lloyd George, was struggling with inflation raging at 0.1%. House prices were fairly stable, with the new villas of West Park selling for about £1,250, which would equate to about £110,000 today. Then, £1,250 was not an inconsiderable sum, given that the average teacher’s salary was £177 per annum. Skilled workers earned between £97 and £125 a year and solicitors averaged about £1,345. Indeed, figures from the time suggest that the cost of running a household with a cook, housemaid and nursemaid was less than £100 per annum, with the cook earning only about £35 a year.

Even then, much like today, a certain group of home buyers seem to have been amongst the most highly paid. Along with the woollen merchants and other entrepreneurs moving into West Park were quite a few bankers. The 1911 census records show the financial hub of West Park was based around Ashleigh Road and Thornfield Road. Amongst other residents were two bank managers, a financial agent, a retired bank accountant and a bank cashier. Whilst round the corner on Horsforth Lane resided a stockbroker. The census does not record their salaries nor any bonuses they may have received. Doug Kemp www.westparkresidents.org.uk

LIFE & STYLE
THEY LIVED IN HEADINGLEY THOMAS ENGLAND, CORN FACTOR - AND HIS CASTLE
Not everyone knows that Headingley has a castle – not a medieval fortress, in truth, but a turreted, castellated early Victorian mansion, built by a wealthy businessman with pretensions to grandeur. Invisible from the road, it lies set back in spacious grounds along a tree-lined drive near the Original Oak pub. It was built in 1843 for the successful corn factor, Thomas England, who came originally from Broughton near Skipton. He was one of the many businessmen who made themselves a fortune out of the urgent need to feed the exploding population of Leeds, in particular to supply the ever-growing number of mouths with that basic of life, bread. As a corn factor, he acted as a kind of middleman between the farmers, the importers of grain, and the merchants supplying the flour mills. He had his business in the Calls, with another branch in Wakefield, and every Tuesday from 11am – 1pm he had his stand at the old Corn Exchange at the top of Briggate (not the Corn Exchange we know now, which was built later). The old Exchange had an open market square behind it, where the dealers all had their stands displaying samples of the grain they had on offer. The market was packed, business was thriving, and by 1836, when he was 35, Thomas England had made enough money to think about a move out of town to live in more pleasant, rural surroundings - but still close enough for daily travel to town in his private coach. He bought a substantial plot of land on the edge of Headingley village, fronting onto Headingley Lane, and employed a local architect, John Child, to design him a splendid house in Gothic style. With its tower, battlements and grandiose porch it lived up to the name he gave it: Headingley Castle. (He later changed it to ‘The Elms’ perhaps feeling he’d gone over the top!) The interior featured some fine decorative work, and an impressive fullheight staircase hall, lit by a lantern with the architect’s name inscribed around it. He too had had a fine house built for himself in 1881, not a castle but in the style of an early manor house: Carr Manor, in Stonegate Road, Meanwood, built on the site of the seventeenth century Carr House. Headingley Castle itself was sold in 1866 to Arthur Lupton, who came from a long-standing and distinguished Leeds family, and then from 1908 was occupied by Colonel Frank Fulford, who had made his fortune from the patent medicine Bile Beans. Later in the century it served as a centre for the blind, but is now converted into apartments. Its blackened stone still retains something of the Gothic grandeur Thomas England planned 170 years ago for his Headingley retreat.

innovative modern features: fireproof cast iron beams in the basement, and a newly-invented boiler system to heat the house: the manufacturer proudly advertised that a model had been installed at Headingley Castle and could be viewed by application to Mr England. He and his family lived there in some style. By 1851 his household, now with five children, included a governess, six women servants, and a groom and coachman living in separate quarters. He was clearly prospering, and had interests in banking and the newly developing railways, as well as playing his part locally as a Trustee of the Leeds-Otley turnpike road. His daughter Susan made an interesting marriage: in 1869 she married Thomas Clifford Allbutt, a physician at the Infirmary who went on to pursue a distinguished career, crowned with a knighthood. He invented the pocket clinical thermometer (previous models were a foot long!), undertook significant research in vari-

GARDENROUND-UP ROUND-UP By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural
............................................... There’s still plenty to do in the garden! Leaves, which started falling in September and are still dropping, need to be cleared. Punch holes in black plastic sacks, fill them up and set aside to rot down. Add some to the compost heap. If they are wet, you’ll often find worms – add them too. Shrubs planted for winter interest are now coming into their own. Salix and Cornus show off their coloured stems, ranging from greens to reds. Winter flowering Heather Mahonias and Vibernum bodnantense ‘Dawn’, with sweet perfumes, are always welcome on a dull day. Various grasses, including perhaps a Pampas clump with white showy plumes, always look good. Look round for variegated and evergreen shrubs to plant now for year round interest. Garden ponds need attention too – clear end of season debris, cut down surrounding perennials and fork over the soil. Pumps can be removed, serviced and stored until next year. Stop feeding fish, if there are any, until Spring. Place a ball on the surface to stop ice forming over the whole surface. There’s still time to plant tulips but don’t leave it much later! Plant them either in pots or in the ground. If squirrels are about, cover with wire netting until the shoots appear. Clean out the greenhouse and bring in any pots of tender plants for over-wintering. If unheated, wrap the pots with bubble wrap and cover with fleece (especially if we are in for a winter like last year!). Give beds a good covering of mulch from the compost heap to keep weeds at bay – winter or no winter they always manage to survive! There’s still the odd flower and vegetable show around – the last ones of the year. Do visit these as they are a good window for what can be grown. There is always someone on hand to give advice and who is more than willing to help.

LOOK
AND FEEL YOUR BEST
THIS FESTIVE SEASON The festive season is rapidly creeping up on us once again. ‘The most wonderful time of the year’ definitely brings with it a significant amount of stress and can leave you feeling tired, drained and generally ‘blah’. Rather than waiting ‘til January 1st to make some resolutions, why not start the process of looking and feeling good now so you’ll be at your best throughout the holiday season? Here are some tips to help you do just that.
BOOST CONFIDENCE Change your hairstyle – there’s nothing like a new hairstyle to put some pep in your step. It doesn’t even need to be a drastic change but a touch of colour or a hot new cut will give you a boost. Obviously, choose a hairdresser you can trust to avoid any pre-Christmas hair disasters – no one wants those photos to live on forever on Facebook! Compliment others – something we hardly do enough of. Think someone looks good today? Did a good job? Is wearing a nice pair of shoes? Tell them! It’s pretty much guaranteed you’ll make the person’s day and you’ll boost your own confidence in the process by fighting your fear of speaking to strangers. Do something that takes you out of the hum drum of every day life for an hour or so a week. Join a club – sing your heart out in a choir, jump into a discussion in a book club, or kick a ball about with a local team – you’ll meet new people and give your confidence a boost.

PAMPER YOURSELF Get a manicure or pedicure – Sometimes it’s the simplest things that can make you feel good and often it lies in the littlest details. Having your hands and feet pampered is relaxing and opting for a bold, new colour on your nails is always a good talking point at Christmas parties. Fellas, you can get your nails done too – though outrageous colours are optional! Have a massage – to avoid feeling like one big ball of tension come Christmas Day, have a massage or two between now and then. Sure, it’s the season of giving, but it’s perfectly acceptable to devote an hour to yourself, your body and your sanity. Have a spa day – or try out the Turkish Baths in Harrogate. The process of heating and cooling the body at the Baths promotes relaxation and a clear mind. You can even make it a fun family day out.

GET MOVING Take a Walk – It’s so easy to forget your fitness over the madness of the Christmas season but doing some sort of activity will lift your mood and help you focus. Even just walking for 30 minutes a day – get off the bus a few stops early and walk the rest of your journey, or take a post-dinner walk with your family – it all makes a difference and you’ll feel better for it. Take a Class – You don’t even need to join a gym anymore. There are fitness instructors doing all sorts of classes all over the city. You’re bound to find one that’ll interest you and at the fraction of the cost of a gym membership too. Try one of the hot new fitness crazes like Zumba, or Kettlebells where you use a cast iron weight with a handle. Holding the weight in both hands, you start by swinging it between your legs, then progress to moves that include swapping hands when the bell is in mid-air. This type of exercise is great for improving strength without bulking up. It also improves circulation, balance and coordination. Watch What You Eat – If you start following a healthy eating plan now, you won’t be faced with the mammoth task of losing extra pounds in the new year. The constant stress of feeling as though you’re over eating or shouldn’t eat something often makes Christmas
more stressful – get the eating habits in check before all the parties begin and you’ll have a much more pleasant party season. Christmas is a time of celebration and we all too often get so caught up in the little details, we forget to enjoy it. You can avoid feeling run down and worn out by doing just a few things to pamper yourself and keep yourself looking and feeling your best. Now go forth and enjoy it!

Time for Some Tapas! It could have been Barcelona! Cast your mind back to that fabulous week at the end of September. Temperatures were breaking records and everyone had jumped back into their summer clothes. We wandered down Greek Street in Leeds and you really could have thought you were in some sunny Spanish city – people poured out into the street sipping on cold beer and wine, the restaurants had thrown open their doors, everyone was all smiles. Time for some tapas to accompany that cold beer! And look at that........there’s La Tasca, Spanish music drifting out the door, adding to the temporary holiday atmosphere on Greek Street. Inside the restaurant seemed brighter – gone were the red walls. Taking advantage of the warm evening we sat by the open doors and started examining the menu. The worst thing about tapas is it is so hard to choose! The great thing about it is you can try so many different things! They suggest choosing three dishes each – which we did, then threw in another for good measure! There were king prawns sizzling in chilli and garlic-infused oil; salt baked langoustines; and corn-fed chicken breast, cooked with smoked paprika, chorizo, mixed peppers, and onion in a white wine and cream sauce. Then a ‘superfood’ salad with red quinoa, lentils, avocado and tomatoes, marinated in infused lemon oil; mushrooms sautéed in garlic and white wine; and a fabulous mixed bean, orange and mint salad. The king prawns were suitably spicy and the langoustines delicious (although I do sometimes wonder if all that peeling is worth the trouble – on second thoughts, yes it is!). The smoked paprika and chorizo gave the chicken a unique, rich flavour and the ‘superfood’ salad was a revelation. I admit I expected miracles after eating it, but I’m still waiting! I loved the mixed bean salad – so cool and fresh and perfect for that Indian Summer evening.
24 November 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
Only the mushrooms were a slight disappointment – I’m sure some people would love them, but I craved a little more ‘umph’. All in all it was a very enjoyable evening. The service was amazing and we were lucky enough to hit upon one of their ‘tasting’ evenings and were treated to tastes of paella, manchengo cheese, cured meats and sherry. Oh, order bread with your tapas – not only is it great bread, you’ll need it to mop up all that lovely sauce. La Tasca, 4 Greek Street, Leeds, LS1 5PT. Tel: 0113 244 2205

A Winter Appeal for Hope Pastures In winter, Hope Pastures’ feed and bedding bills treble. There is no grass so the horses’ diet has to be supplemented with hay. The animals are stabled, which means more clean, dry bedding is needed, and the older horses need lots of special feed to keep them happy and healthy through the cold weather. Some horses need warm waterproof coats and these regularly need cleaning and repairing. The day to day running of the sanctuary costs a lot of money. Just to give you an idea: painkillers to ease arthritis in an old horse costs 60p per day, they use 50 per week. A sack of carrots costs £1 and they use a sack per day. They use five sacks of pony nuts a week at £6 a sack. A sack of chopped hay, for horses
with few or no teeth, costs £8 (four a week). Horses hooves need to be trimmed and balanced – £375 every eight weeks. Winter straw costs £50 per week; shavings bedding for horses with dust allergies - £30 per week; waterproof horse coat £60£100; transport to collect a needy horse or donkey – £50 per journey.
You can see how quickly the expenses mount up. If you would like to help, you can make a donation by calling Hope Pastures on 0113 261 4344, dropping in to the sanctuary on Weetwood Lane (at the junction with the Ring Road), or visiting www.hopepastures.org Thank you!
CALENDAR GIRLS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR BRAIN TUMOUR RESEARCH With more than 120 different types of brain tumour, is it any wonder that this disease, which kills more people under 40 than any other type of cancer, is so hard to diagnose? Brain tumour research is vital, yet remains desperately underfunded. Recently 34 women from all over Yorkshire, all of whom had been affected by brain cancer in some way, got together through Brain Tumour Research and Support (BTRS) and produced an elegant, semi-nude calendar, using little more than hats for cover! Their aim is raise funds to enable the recently launched Translational Neuro-oncology Group at Leeds Institute for Molecular Medicine (LIMM) not only to continue, but also to grow and develop. “Only through research will a difference be made to those who have experienced brain tumours,
whether as a patient or as a family member”, said Carol Robertson of BTRS, formerly known as Andrea’s Gift, who put the women in touch with each other. “This was a fun project which we hope will raise awareness and help us to fund further research. Less than 1% of funds raised for research into cancer is dedicated to brain cancer. It is vital that we progress brain tumour research to be able to make a difference to the patients of the future.”

A BLACK HEATHCLIFF?
The 1939 film version of Wuthering Heights starred Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Cathy. It is a love story with added ghosts, full of well-dressed characters talking posh. Olivier gives us a Heathcliff starkly different to the one in the enigmatic, original novel. It was certainly not ludicrous, like the one played by Cliff Richard in a musical version, but it was not the one in Emily Brontë’s mind, the one we can only guess at that is, because she was an intensely private woman not given to explanations. Her Heathcliff is violent, obsessive and consumed by a desire for power and revenge. He beats Isabella after he marries her and hangs her dog. A romantic hero or what? So how did Emily picture him? Would it have been someone like Tom Hardy, Timothy Dalton, or Ralph Fiennes, just three of the many white actors who have played the part? Sometimes they had black hair, sometimes faces darkened a little with makeup. I think that Andrea Arnold might be close to the mark with James Howson star of the recent award winning film adap28 November 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
tation. Mr Lockwood says in the first chapter that he is ‘a dark-skinned gipsy in aspect’ and Mr Linton says in Chapter Six:
built with the enormous wealth which came from slave–powered plantations – Harewood House for example.
‘Oho! I declare he is that strange acquisition my late neighbour made, in his journey to Liverpool—a little Lascar, or an American or Spanish castaway.’
She may well have known about black anti-slavery campaigners like freed slave Olaudah Equiano, whose autobiography was a bestseller in the late eighteenth century, and the American Frederick Douglass, who spoke in Leeds in the year before the first publication of Wuthering Heights in 1847. More black people lived in England in her time than people realise. A black Heathcliff subjected to racism and beatings is very credible.
A Lascar was a seaman recruited from places like Bengal. Thousands lived in England in the Brontës’ time, many with white British wives. The young Heathcliff speaks ‘gibberish’ when he first comes back with Mr Earnshaw. So which language is it? Bengali? Roma? An African language? A strong patois from Jamaica? Emily would have been well-acquainted with the evils of the slave trade (Liverpool was a slaving port) through her father Patrick, an admirer of the anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce MP, who had sponsored him when he was a poor student at Cambridge University, and she would have known about the magnificent Yorkshire houses
Wuthering Heights has won Best Cinematography at the 68th Venice International Film Festival and will screen on Thursday 3rd November at Leeds Town Hall as part of the 25th Leeds International Film Festival. ART OF GOLD SUPPORTS SAVE THE CHILDREN EAST AFRICA APPEAL Art of Gold, on New Road Side, Horsforth, is hosting a sparkling Christmas Show featuring 20 of the UK’s most collectible and creative jewellery designers from Friday 4th November – 21st January, and 10% of the profits will be donated to Save the Children for their East Africa Appeal.
We Are Poets, a striking film about six remarkable young poets who represent the UK at the world’s most prestigious poetry slam in the US, won the Youth Jury Award at Sheffield Doc Fest, 2011, nominated alongside established directors like Werner Herzog (Cave Of Forgotten Dreams, 2011). The film, by debut directors Alex Ramseyer-Bache and Daniel Lucchesi is cinematic, honest and deeply personal. It is a moving testament to the power of creativity, community and the dynamism of young people. Over the course of a year, We Are Poets follows six members of Leeds Young Authors (LYA), a grassroots youth organisation founded in 2003 in Chapeltown. They have been chosen to represent the UK at Brave New Voices, the most prestigious poetry slam competition in the USA. Igrat’s ‘The Seagull’ - An Eye-opener for Chekhov Aficionados? Igrat Theatre is finding the funny side of Chekhov. Using games and play in the rehearsal process, the darkly humorous, but often forgotten, elements of the classic text The Seagull are being brought to light in this fresh and exciting production. Whilst another company might start rehearsals for a Chekhov piece with a group read-through, Igrat started by improvising their own Eurovision song contest! With on-the-spot choreography, a human pyramid and a ‘Ministry of Silly Walks’ follow-the-leader, it was clear from this first gathering that Igrat’s production of The Seagull was going to be far from the ordinary.
STUDIO OPEN WEEKEND Ceramic Artist Margaret Glackin is holding an Open Weekend at her pottery studio at 7 Oakwell Gardens in Roundhay (LS8 1RR) on Friday 2nd December (5 – 8pm) and Saturday and Sunday (1 – 6pm). to the public over the first weekend of December:
Margaret opened her pottery studio two years ago and produces handthrown domestic ware suitable for oven to table use alongside handbuilt sculptural, one-off pieces. On show on 2nd – 4th December will be drinking vessels, including wine goblets and ale tankards, teapots, bowls, vases and sculptural pieces. Prices start from as little as £4.50.
Igrat, is a group of 13 students from the School of Performance and Cultural Industries who study Theatre and Performance Managing at the University of Leeds. Having studied various practitioners during their first two years at University, The Seagull is the company’s chance to put this study into practice. Bridging the gap between the student and professional world, the company is hoping to take The Seagull from its four day run at the Stage@Leeds, to the newly branded International Student Drama Festival, The Edinburgh Fringe and beyond. The Seagull particularly appealed to Igrat as it provides both an interesting study of Chekhov’s original text, with its dark comedic roots, and is a poignant look at the state of the Theatre in modern day Britain. It looks set to be an eye-opener for both Chekhov aficionados and those looking for an accessible way into the Russian playwright’s works. Igrat’s ‘The Seagull’ is at Stage@Leeds, University of Leeds from Wednesday 23rd – Saturday 26th November at 7.30pm. Tickets £8.50/ £6.50. For more information visit www.stage.leeds.ac.uk or email igrat_theatre@hotmail.co.uk
Seasonal refreshments will be available. For further information call 07905 726 862/ 0113 295 9541, or email margaret.glackin@ntlworld. com
SOUND & VISION Unless you’ve been residing in a remote cave for the last few months it’s unlikely to have escaped your attention that Ryan Gosling is pretty hot property at the moment. The guy is everywhere and exuding the kind of Hollywood hunk mojo that has been clogging up internet message boards and reducing grown men and women alike to giddy, giggling schoolgirls. His is the name on everyone’s nervously trembling lips.
DRIVE Directed by: Nicolas Winding Refn Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Ron Pearlman. 100 mins Cert: 18
In this ultra stylish LA crime caper Gosling plays a man with no name, referred to only as ‘The Driver’, an enigmatic, intense (and intensely cool) stunt driver for movies who also moonlights as a getaway driver for local hoods. Despite his butterwouldn’t-melt demeanor ‘The Driver’ is shown to have a heart not entirely made of stone when he develops a fondness for his neighbour, Irene (Carey Mulligan), and her young son. Unfortunately, this burgeoning relationship is complicated by the fact that Irene’s jailbird husband, Standard, is soon to be released. When he arrives home we learn he still owes protection money to some really bad guys who require him to pull off a pawn shop heist to settle his debt. Wanting to do the best thing for Irene, ‘The Driver’ offers his services to help out. However, Standard and ‘The Driver’ are double crossed and the heist goes awry. And then things get bloody. Really bloody. I must say that after the effusive hype that preceded its UK release, I expected more from Drive. It’s not a bad film by any stretch but nor is it a modern pulp fiction crime classic. There is much to like here, the excellent cinematography for one thing. Los Angeles hasn’t been so sumptuously and lovingly depicted on screen since Michael Mann’s films Heat or Collateral. Also pleasing are solid performances by Albert Brooks as the local crime boss and Ron Pearlman as his brutal, thuggish enforcer. Since I last saw him Brooks seems to have morphed into a thick set, craggy Gene Hackman type and the always-watchable Pearlman is a

And Gosling does strike an iconic figure as ‘The Driver’ channeling a bit of vintage Steve McQueen cool. But Bullit this ain’t.
0113 268 9983
Firstly, this is hardly Gosling’s best performance, for that check out his superb Oscar nominated turn in Half Nelson. It may just be that his role in Drive doesn’t have him doing a great deal. ‘The Driver’ is a pretty tight lipped kind of guy so the dialogue is pretty thin on the ground but, most infuriatingly, he doesn’t actually do that much driving! I’m a bit of a sucker for a good car chase and I’m afraid to say Drive left me wanting. That said, I’m unlikely to do as one US moviegoer did recently and attempt to sue the distribution company because it wasn’t like The Fast and the Furious (true story).

ANTI SNAP LOCKS FITTED from £60.00 inclusive AND FREE SECURITY SURVEYS It seems to me that Drive was on its way to being a lurid and exhilarating ride but took a wrong turn somewhere. The pacing is all askew and the plot (or narrative ‘drive’, for want of a better term) unfolds incrementally between long, lingering shots of Ryan Gosling looking handsome and cool and not doing or saying much. It’s as if even the cameraman has become besotted, “Screw the next scene, I can’t take my eyes off this stud!”. For my money the whole thing could’ve been considerably tightened up during the editing process. So I was a little underwhelmed, no doubt due to the high hopes I had going in. It looks great and the sporadic action is handled with verve and assurance. It’s pretty good, not great, not terrible but, y’know, pretty good. I’d probably see it again but I’m not sure if I’d run a red light to do so.

THE LEEDS GATHERING: A CELEBRATION OF CELTIC MUSIC & ARTS The Gathering, a ten day celebration of Irish arts and culture kicks off in Leeds on 10th November. Dozens of events including music sessions, film, literary and educational events will be taking place at venues across Leeds, bringing some of Ireland’s finest artists to the city. Organised by the Irish Arts Foundation, the programme is designed to appeal to both those of an Irish background and the wider community with an interest in music and the arts. It features some of the most dynamic local, national and international performers and artistes in the world of Irish and Celtic arts. Belfast- based traditional supergroup ‘At First Light ‘, described by the Irish Times as a ‘dream team line up’, will play Seven Arts on Sunday 13th November.
Otley Courthouse features virtuoso guitarist and button accordionist Tim Edey (formerly of the Sharon Shannon Band & Lunasa) on Sunday 20th November. Tim has an exceptional musical ear which allows him to play the most demanding instrumentals in any style you throw at him. Alongside him is Kiwi harmonica player and composer Brendan Power, with support from piano accordion legend, Karen Tweed. Eddi Reader and Alan Kelly, with special guest Kieran Goss, will play the City Varieties.
Two community ceilidhs will be taking place with a fine line up of visiting session musicians (including Ciara O’Sullivan, Vanessa Millar and Kevin Corbett), a lecture from Professor Harry White of University College, Dublin, and the UK Premier of the Irish Film The Other Side of Sleep. For further information and full details of the programme, contact Irish Arts Foundation on info@ irisharts.org.uk or visit www. irisharts.org.uk
CHANTEL MCGREGOR - YOUNG BRITISH BLUES ARTIST OF THE YEAR Universal Music’s recent centenary album ‘100 Years of the Blues’ features a host of the world’s most iconic blues artists - Eric Clapton, BB King, Billie Holiday, Robert Johnson – the list is an impressive roll call of household names. The final (and longest) track of the album, Help Me, is from a name you might not know yet, but should certainly look out for: Chantel McGregor. At just 24 years old, Chantel has just been voted Young Artist of the Year by the British Blues Awards, an amazing achievement and testament to her outstanding talent. She certainly challenges any preconception you might hold of a blues guitarist: she’s young, gorgeous and from Yorkshire! 38 November 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
Described as a prodigy, she wields her ‘strat’ with an effortless dexterity that leaves you breathless. Listen to one of her tracks or look her up on YouTube immediately and prepare to be surprised. Probably one of the most accomplished guitarists in the country, she could turn her hand to any genre of music but she has been honing her blues skills in jams since she was 14, and it shows. I urge you to check out her debut album Like No Other and check out her tour dates at www.chantelmcgregor.com
LIFF25 Opens with Stunning Wuthering Heights
The new version of Wuthering Heights, filmed on the North Yorkshire Moors will open the 18day (3rd – 20th November) Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF), with a gala screening at Leeds Town Hall on Thursday 3rd November. The film which stars Leeds newcomer James Howson as Heathcliffe and Kaya Scodelario, star of ‘Skins’, as Cathy, has already been hailed as ‘stunning’ by film critics and picked up the award for Best Cinematography at the Venice Film Festival. “I’m delighted that the 25th Leeds International Film Festival will open with one of the most talked-about films of the year, and one with strong associations to the Yorkshire region”, said Chris Fell, Director of Leeds International Film Festival. “Andrea Arnold’s raw interpretation of Wuthering Heights is a powerful experience and like none that has come before.” Over 300 films from around the world will be screened in this 25th anniversary year. Paul Merton will be one of the big-name guests appearing – he will present a night devoted to silent film comedy.
LIFF25 features a superb programme of over 300 films, including breathtaking British cinema, outstanding world cinema, cult archive presentations, spine-tingling live music events, thought provoking documentaries, ‘wondermental’ experimental cinema and a selection of special events – from Paul Merton’s Silent Clowns at Leeds Town Hall on Wednesday 9th November, to the Thought Bubble Festival which celebrates comics and graphic novels, gaming and storyboarding. Other highlights include the popular horror-themed Fanomenon Night of the Dead XI which returns on Saturday 5th November to Hyde Park Picture House, and Fanomenon Day of the Dead 5 at the City Varieties. Tickets for LIFF25 are available in person from the City Centre Box Office at The Carriageworks Millennium Square, by phone on 0113 224 3801, and at www. leedsfilm.com The 25th Leeds International Film Festival is presented by Leeds City Council and funded by the MEDIA Programme of the European Union, the British Film Institute and Screen Yorkshire.

Leeds Masters League Raises More Money for Annabelle Rose Trust
St. Gemma’s Zumbathon St Gemma’s Hospice is planning a Leeds Zumbathon on Sunday 19th February 2012. The hottest fitness craze at the moment, the Zumbathon will be held at The Grammar School at Leeds, Alwoodley, 10am – 1pm. Not only could you be taking part in a fun and exhilarating Zumba session - it will be for three hours and it will be sponsored!
Leeds’ growing Masters Rugby League community converged on Old Modernians, Cookridge, on Sunday 23rd October in aid of local schoolgirl Annabelle Rose Wardleworth. The Masters’ format - a modified version of the game for players over the age of 35 - has made rapid strides this year and around 100 of the city’s rugby league ‘legends’ assembled in Cookridge to compete in the Annual Annabelle Rose Challenge. The event was first held as a cross-code fundraiser in 2010 to help raise money for six year old Annabelle, who was born with Quadriplegic Spastic Cerebral Palsy, to travel to America for life-changing surgery. Thanks to the support of many donors and sponsors and the tireless efforts of her parents, Annabelle successfully underwent surgery in January this year and, as a result, was able to walk for the very first time. In order to maintain her progress, Annabelle needs regular intensive physiotherapy. “Unfortunately there’s no provision for the level of support that Annabelle needs”, explained her dad and Leeds Akkies Masters player Ben Wardleworth. “It’s down to us to raise the money so she will be able to lead a normal and active life.”
Don’t panic though – the workouts are interval (slow then fast) and there will be lots of chances to get your breath back and ready for the next section. You don’t need to be able to dance, you can even be a complete beginner in dance and fitness – it’s perfect for those who don’t exercise and want to get involved. The event is open to both male and female participants and you will burn up to 2,400 calories!
The event was hosted by Leeds Akkies RLFC in conjunction with Leeds Rugby Foundation. As development manager Sam Horner commented: “We’re proud to be able to come together to help one of our own. The Masters format has been hugely successful in recent years and much of that is because of the camaraderie and pride shared between all the competing players.”
This is a sponsored only event. By signing up you are committing to raising funds towards the vital care St Gemma’s offers its patients. These services are provided free of charge. The hospice costs over £22,000 a day to run, so sponsorship is a vital part of their fundraising.

Richmond House Awarded Links Mark for Innovative Foreign Language Teaching The award is part of the Department for Education’s ‘Links into Languages’ initiative which offers financial support for innovative curriculum development projects that help to transform language learning for pupils. Richmond House is committed to teaching foreign languages and, this year, has introduced French to Reception and Year 1 classes. It is now taught throughout the school, and Spanish has been added to the curriculum in Years 5 and 6. The school has some exceptional linguists who reached the final stages of the National Junior Language Challenge for the last three years. This year 12 pupils were in the semi finals, making up 40% of the top 30 qualifying entrants. This is the highest percentage of semi-finalists from one school in Yorkshire. Last year there were tree final places available for Yorkshire entrants and Richmond House pupils took all of them. “We pride ourselves on our forward thinking in languages and believe that learning a foreign language from an early age benefits our children in so many ways”, said Katie Lucas, Modern Foreign Languages Coordinator.
Richmond House Families Get Out and About Paul Oldham, Deputy Head at Richmond House School, has arranged several weekend camping trips and scenic walks in the Yorkshire countryside to encourage families to do fun activities together. “Walking is a love of mine and I was keen to share that passion with the children and help them to see the benefits of the ‘big outdoors’” said
Paul. “Too often children want to spend all their time in front of games consoles and television sets and don’t appreciate the world around them.” Surveys have shown that children actually prefer being outside and playing with friends to any other activity. Paul continued: “The children have great fun on our trips, mixing with children of all ages, running around, playing in streams and woods and the parents love to see them enjoying themselves outdoors and with friends and of course they like the fact that most of these trips usually end up in the pub!”
“I have had a lot of positive feedback from parents who have said that, after the walks, their children have had high energy levels, were keen to do similar activities again and that they didn’t realise some of the beautiful places visited existed. For many it has been the start of a new family hobby.”

But don’t just take our word for it; The Grammar School at Leeds recently received top marks across the board following a visit from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The School was rated as ‘Excellent’, achieving the highest possible rating in every category, from academic success through to extra-curricular activities, demonstrating we really do offer excellence in everything we do.
