Textile Workshops in Meanwood The Three Churches in Meanwood have organised a series of informal textile workshops in October and November.

The course, which will include both wet and dry felting as well as other techniques, will be suitable for both beginners and those who would like to improve their skills. It will run for six weeks, 7.30 – 9pm on Wednesdays 5th, 12th, 19th October, and 2nd, 9th and 16th November. also a peaceful haven for wildlife. It had been the wood belonging to Lawns Hall - hence the name Lawnswood. The cemetery was developed to serve the parish of Headingleycum-Burley and the first burial dates to 1876. Adel was chosen as the location because it had a new road, little opposition (no nearby housing) and an available site which could be purchased cheaper than any land within the Leeds boundary. ROYAL PARK SCHOOL INELIGIBLE FOR LOTTERY FUNDING The Royal Park Community Consortium (RPCC) is expecting to hear the decision of Leeds City Council Executive Board regarding the future of the Royal Park School building in early October. Deemed ineligible by postcode for Lottery and European Regional Development Funding, the Consortium has been unable to locate any other large capital funding streams for the renovations, meaning the £800,000 offer also fell through at the end of August. With diminishing time, RPCC is still looking for funding that could help refurbish the site and continues its fundraising to pay off its debts to the architects and other businesses. Leeds Ahead, supported by the Council, has set up meetings with some professional ‘critical friends’ to look again at the alternatives and a report will go to the Council, before the executive meets to make a decision. Other group members are exploring a variety of avenues.

People involved with the RPCC are realists. Whatever Leeds City Council Executive board decides, members are working on other plans, looking at what support and activities the area really needs and exploring ways of developing those services to pull the community together. That was always what the RPCC wanted, to help integrate the diverse community. Since the school closed, support activities serving particular sections of the Hyde Park community have been put in place and more are in the pipeline. However, these will not help the area develop as an integrated community. After seven years of neglect, the building is all but wrecked. On a recent visit by potential funders, it was reported that the group was not allowed to go upstairs, on safety grounds. The £750,000 to start the project is still being sought at this the 11th hour. Paul Hudson Royal Park Community Consortium info@royalparkschool.org 07962255621

Meanwood Park Hospital Site
www.digitelsystems
Several local residents have raised concerns over the Meanwood Park Hospital site so I thought I would use this opportunity to update you on progress towards improving this area of woodland. The site has been in a considerable state of disrepair for some time but is owned by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, so the Council has not been able to act.
It has been the subject of discussion between former councillor Brenda Lancaster, myself, and the two organisations (the Council and Hospital Trust) for a while, with a view to coming to an agreement on how the site can be cleared up and maintained. I received the following notification of an offer from the Council’s City Development Department, which, I think, brings some new hope: “We would be prepared to look after [the woodlands] as long as they were brought up to an adoptable standard – not just the trees but also the paths, walls, infrastructure and everything – and also if there is a maintenance sum to keep them properly.” For now, the land remains the responsibility of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, so please feel free to direct any complaints to me, and I will take them up on your behalf. I look forward to this issue being resolved, for the benefit of the local community, and congratulate both the Council and the Trust for getting this far. There’s still a lot of work to be done with the Trust to get the site up to scratch, but here’s to hoping we will all see a beautifully maintained woodland area in the coming months and years! 0113 247 4580/ 07949123723. mark.harris@leeds.gov.uk

CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence
In May this year the people of Headingley elected me to be their new Labour Councillor and it is a great honour and privilege to represent the Ward. Community Safety is one of my priorities, along with housing, the economy and the environment. The recent events of civil disturbance in London and elsewhere demonstrated how important it is to tackle both crime and depravation in our city. I was pleased, therefore, to see a new initiative tackling burglary across Leeds, and backed by the Council to the tune of £1.3M, was recently launched. It will be run by Safer Leeds, a partnership body that includes the police. The funding will be targeted at areas such as Headingley and Hyde Park, where we still suffer from far too high a rate of burglary. Whilst we have come a long way in making north Leeds safer, we can’t afford to let the situation go backwards.
My promise is to listen to local residents, campaign on the issues you care about and work with you to address the challenges that Headingley and Leeds face My promise is to listen to local residents, campaign on the issues you care about and work with you to address the challenges that Headingley and Leeds face. DON’T CRY FOR BEEF, ARGENTINA! GAUCHO PUT ON A MASTERCLASS THAT DEFINITELY GETS TOP MARKS Despite having been open now for a year, you would be forgiven for missing Gaucho in Leeds city centre. The unassuming entrance on Park Row is tucked away in the heart of the city’s business district and is easy to miss for those not in the know. Fortunately for us, we had the opportunity to meet the Gaucho team for a masterclass in their specialty – Argentine beef and wine. Gaucho revealed itself to be a very elegantly put together venue with slick, modern monochrome décor and a well stocked bar that offer familiar cocktails with an Argentine twist (try the Pommelina, their take on a Caipirinha – delicious!). Our hosts for the evening were Mike Reid, Executive Chef, who opened our eyes to what makes Argentine beef so exquisite, and Phil Crozier, Wine Director, who guided us through a myriad of red wines to complement the beef. The beef was phenomenal and each of the six cuts we tried was cooked to melt-in-the-mouth perfection. The secret appears to be a combination of how the beef is reared and aged. Much of it is down to the Argentinean terrain, which offers a rich diet of easy-todigest fine grass. The level ground means that the cows’ muscles grow evenly, resulting in cattle that are not only identical in size, but also meat that is beautifully tender throughout. The meat is wet aged, vacuum sealed and left
to mature in its own juices, as it is shipped over to UK for use in Gaucho’s 14 UK restaurants. The award-winning wine list comprises the largest collection of Argentine wines anywhere outside Argentina and Phil visits at least twice a year to source the best available. Gaucho even have their own vineyard. As with the beef, it is the terrain that makes Argentine wine so different. Most of the vineyards are in the province of Mendoza, high on the slopes of the Andes, and varied changes in altitude result in extraordinary wine-growing conditions. The wine seasons are also longer than in Europe, giving the grapes more time to mature on the vine, so they have a richer flavour and can be drunk much younger than many of their European counterparts. The evening was fascinating and we learnt more about Argentine beef and wine than we ever thought we could want to know! The service is impeccable, the atmosphere formal but not stiff and the food flawless. Gaucho’s sophisticated elegance makes it perfect for corporate entertaining and events, a romantic night out or even just a quick cocktail in the bar, I know we will be heading there again. As autumn arrives, many birds are gathering together for the winter. Among these are two farmland birds, yellowhammers and linnets, which form flocks separately or together and sometimes with finches such as chaffinch, and buntings such as reed bunting. Stubble fields are a favourite feeding area. Yellowhammers are elongated long-tailed buntings. Males have a yellowish head and undersides with a redbrown rump contrasting with an olive-brown back. By contrast females are browner and more streaked. Evocative of warm summer days is the repetitive song.

Restless and active, linnets fly in tight, bounding flocks. They are slim and long-tailed, smaller than yellowhammers. In summer plumage, males have a grey head and brown back with red on forehead and breast. Females, and males in winter, are brownish. Melodious, mixed with chattering notes, the song is cheerful and pleasant. Both species prefer open lowland country where they prefer hedges, young plantations, heaths and other bushy areas. Linnets are particularly fond of gorse bushes as nesting sites. Neither bird is as common as formerly. A contributory factor is considered to be reduced availability of winter seed.

IT’S A CINCH WITH A FINCH The car has always played an important role in the life of the Otley Road parade of shops. The numerous parked cars are testament to the many people who converge on these shops for hair appointments and beauty treatments, coffee or lunch with friends, new running gear, carpets and curtains, accountancy services or house sales. Yet some these shops have a more direct link with the car, rather than the drivers. A photograph on the Leodis website, shows that what is now the West Park Deli was once a filling station with petrol pumps, not tables and chairs, adorning the paved frontage.

In the 1970s, another shop which served the needs of car rather than driver, was at the end of the parade where Bliss is today. This was a branch of the well-known Leeds battery supplier, Finch batteries. Established before WW2, Finch batteries had established a network of local branches in the Leeds area before being taken over by another Yorkshire company, Crompton-Parkinson. The advertising slogan for Finch batteries was – If you’re worried about starting your car on a cold winter’s morning remember.... It’s a cinch with a Finch!

THEY LIVED IN HEADINGLEY GEORGE HOLBROOK JACKSON (1874-1948) Journalist, writer and publisher
I
n the autumn of 1900 two young men met by chance in a bookshop on Briggate and found they shared interests and ideas which set them apart from what they saw as the grubby commercialism of Leeds. This accidental meeting led to a creative friendship and partnership which was to have an exciting and challenging impact on the cultural and intellectual life of the city in the early years of the twentieth century.
One of the men, George Holbrook Jackson, 26 years old, had just arrived in Leeds from his home town of Liverpool. He had had some earlier clerical jobs while freelancing as a writer, but now he was working as an agent in the lace trade, living in Buckingham Mount, Headingley. A member of the Fabian Society, widely read and open to new ideas, he felt isolated in Leeds, which he saw as an intellectual desert. The young man he met in the bookshop (books were to become his lifelong passion) was a young schoolteacher, Alfred Orage, who had arrived in Leeds s few years before and was teaching in a Board School in one of the city’s slum areas. Alfred Orage was a member of the Independent Labour Party, an active political writer and speaker, a theosophist, and a friend of the charismatic ‘New Life’ philosopher Edward Carpenter. The two men began a conversation which Jackson said ‘continued for the next ten years’ and remained friends all their lives. The outcome of their discussions, reading, and ferment of ideas was the Leeds Arts Club, which they founded in 1903. The Arts Club became one of the most interesting and vibrant centres of radical thought and experimental art outside London. It had premises in town with a library, arranged exhibitions of avant-garde painting, architecture and sculpture, and held regular discussions 16 October 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
on literature, music, philosophy and drama (with an active playgoers’ group). Visiting speakers included George Bernard Shaw, G. K. Chesterton, W. B. Yeats, Hilaire Belloc. It attracted the liveliest minds in the town, men and women, and provided a challenge to local conventionality. But successful as it was, by 1906 both Holbrook Jackson and Alfred Orage felt ready for a wider sphere of activity and they left that year for London, though they continued to keep links with the Club and often returned as speakers. In London, with financial help from George Bernard Shaw, Jackson and Orage bought a struggling Christian Socialist weekly, The New Age, which they transformed into an influential arts journal, with distinguished contributors. But Jackson did not stay long as joint editor - he devoted his time increasingly to writing. In 1907 he published a biography of Shaw, then a book on William Morris, a range of other publications, and in 1914 The Eighteen-Nineties: a Review of Art and Ideas at the Close of the Nineteenth Century which remains the standard work on the period. Meanwhile he took over another literary magazine, and established his own small press. Thus began a long association with printing, publishing and collecting books, about which he wrote extensive-
ly – he has an amazing string of publications to his name, mostly concerned with writing, reading, printing, and collecting books, though William Morris, Edward Lear and Shaw continue to figure as subjects. Up to his death in 1948 he did much to encourage a high standard of bo ok production, and was a patron of the Pelican Press, which republished some of his work after his death. Now his name is all but forgotten, both in Leeds where he helped to inspire a cultural revolution, and everywhere his books used to be known and read. He was a master of the aphorism, and what has survived of his writing is a number of quotations, like ‘Never put off till tomorrow the book you can read today’. What would he have thought of the e-reader?

GARDENROUND-UP ROUND-UP By Kath Hall, Paxton Horticultural
............................................... We are now preparing to put our gardens to bed for the winter. Start by protecting them from hard frosts and snow. For those who grow tree ferns and bananas, cut all dead leaves off and lag the trunks and growing points with a six inch layer of straw then wrap hessian around them. Other tender plants also need to be protected, if we don’t want to lose them like many of us did last winter. Those in tubs and pots need fleece wrapping round the pot as well as covering the plant itself. Blackcurrants need pruning now. Cut black bark shoots back to the pale brown new growth. Propagate deutzia, philadelphus and many other shrubs from hardwood cuttings. Plant them one or two to a pot and place in a cold frame or sheltered spot. Once rooted, pot on in the spring – they will be ready for planting out the following year. Sow hardy annuals either by scattering seeds or into pots ready for an early summer show. Calendula, Californian poppy, Limnanthes plants (such as Cerinthe Major, Foxgloves, even Antirrhinums) will self sow, making the garden look less rigid and softening hard lines. Many herbs are ready for picking and drying, or can be used fresh to make infusions or tinctures. An infusion of honeysuckle flowers (Lonicera Periclymenum) used to be used to treat chest infections. They can also be washed and placed into a jar with runny honey to make a soothing syrup. Look out for other herbs that can be used medicinally and add them to your garden. After a final weeding, empty compost bins on the exposed areas, hopefully keeping further weeds at bay. One persistent weed is the red leafed oxalis, which spreads by fine hair ryzomes underground. The best way to deal with it is to use a Glysophate-based killer. Remember to protect any surrounding plants from the spray. Keep your wooden garden furniture in good condition by painting it when dry with Linseed Oil, Sandolin or Cuprinol preservatives.

Earlier this year, Elaine Bamford had gastric bypass surgery – not an easy option, as it required a complete lifestyle change. “All the foods I had eaten were suddenly reduced to a few mouthfuls rather than a huge plateful”, said Elaine. “I missed bread the most! The first few weeks were very difficult. It felt like I had done a million sit-ups as my stomach muscles were so tight after the operation. “Once things settled down, the weight began to drop off and it was all worth it. I felt more energised. After 14 weeks I had lost five stone, and gone down five dress sizes! My biggest problem was clothes because my size was constantly changing.” That’s when Elaine decided to start

MAY THE BEST HOUSE WIN! After moving to Headingley three and a half years ago, we set about decorating our 1890’s Victorian Terrace from top to bottom. We’re a little obsessed and spend many a weekend, changing things and improving as much as we can. We both love Headingley, the vibrancy, the cafes, the feeling of being in a little community. When I saw that ITV was advertising for the second series of ‘May the Best House Win’ I thought I’d try my luck and apply, never thinking for a minute that they’d contact me. One week later I got a call saying that they were interested in the pictures and would like to come and visit. The next week was spent frantically cleaning my already extremely cleanwithin-an-inch-of-its- life home in preparation. Cushions plumped to perfection and a fresh coat of pillar box red paint was applied to the front door. The producer arrived with her little camera crew and wired me up for my ‘house interview’. Two hours later we’re standing in my living room and the producer asks: “So, do you still want to be on the programme?” “OF COURSE I DO” I exclaimed! Three months later, it’s 6.30am and I’m getting whisked off in a taxi to meet home owner number one and it was nonstop from there on in. Two exhausting days later and filming has finished. I’m not allowed to disclose the winner just yet, but the new series will be screened in November on ITV1. Alexandra Pugh, Headingley

PAINT IT WHITE – THE STORY OF A LEEDS UNITED SUPER-FAN “In its first run on the fringes of the main theatre circuit, audiences laughed and cried in all the right places”, said Les. “With Leeds United there was more crying than laughing.
Gary Edwards pictured with actor Gary Dunnington
“The play is about the unbelievable life of a normal bloke, and it is heartwarming to see such a character loved and admired by almost everyone he comes into contact with. You don’t even need to like football to enjoy this play.”
Paint It White, the hilarious life-story of Gary Edwards, a painter and decorator and avid Leeds United fan, will be staged at Ilkley Playhouse on 21st October, and the West Yorkshire Playhouse on 25th and 26th October. The play, adapted from Edwards’ book by ex-BBC journalist, producer and writer Les Rowley, is based on
the experiences of the Kippax-born superfan who has missed just one game since 1968. Somehow he managed to juggle his passion for the club alongside the fundamentals of life. From a marriage lasting weeks, to driving to matches in a hearse, the play charts the ups and downs of a life as well of that of the team.
Gary Dunnington, Johnny Dixon (Coronation Street), Cathy Breeze (Les Miserables) and Nigel Collins take on the roles to tell the Gary’s story. The play is directed by Rayner Bourton (Rocky Horror Show) and Alun Lewis (Emmerdale). For further information and tickets visit www.paintitwhite.co.uk

The Tiger’s Wife by Téa Obreht Reviewed by Kevin Wight
A recent winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction, Téa Obreht’s debut novel has been highly praised. Ostensibly about a young doctor called Natalia who investigates the circumstances surrounding the death of her grandfather, Natalia’s search acts merely as a frame on which to weave the twin tales of the Tiger’s Wife and the Deathless Man. These were told to her by her grandfather, and they are where the novel most impresses. Following in the rich magical-realist footsteps of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende and Salman Rushdie, they teem with memorable characters and outlandish situations. Told in deceptively simple prose, the richness of the tales themselves is rewarding, and never loses sight of Obreht’s central metaphor of the fragmentation of Yugoslavia itself. On occasion however, it’s not clear exactly what point she’s trying to make. One scene is which the bear man fights the titular tiger left me scratching my head.
Following in the rich magicalrealist footsteps of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende and Salman Rushdie, they teem with memorable characters and outlandish situations Ultimately the novel never becomes more than the sum of its parts. The supposedly central story, that of Natalia’s search for the answers surrounding her grandfather’s death, is nowhere near as interesting as the tales he told her. Perhaps this is Obreht’s point, the power of myth and how a nation can mythologise itself. Natalia’s view of her grandfather is also heavily mythologised - as much as his exploits form a large part of the narrative, he is only ever seen through Natalia’s eyes, and these seem to be slightly fogged by the past.

ANTONY GORMLEY AT HAREWOOD HOUSE key figures in the development of modern sculpture and a strong influence and inspiration for Gormley himself. Gormley cited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Henry Moore Foundation as vital exponents for contemporary sculpture and posited that something about the landscape of Yorkshire, particulary its rich mining heritage and sense of community, is conducive to the creation of great work in this medium. A central and recurrent theme in Gormley’s work is the relationship between the human form and its environment. This new work, entitled Two States, is no exception and speaks to man’s connection to (or disconnection from) nature. Gormley says he feels Harewood House, with its neo-classical architecture surrounded by rolling, idyllic countryside is a fitting and evocative setting for these pieces to make their first appearance.
A
ntony Gormley, undoubtedly one of the world’s foremost sculptors and among the most respected of contemporary British artists, has created two striking new pieces currently on show at Harewood House. We were lucky enough to catch up with the man himself at Harewood, where these new works can be seen for the first time, and found

him happy to speak expansively and engagingly about his art. As the man behind the Angel of the North, Gormley obviously harbours a fondness for our part of the world and draws inspiration from the northern landscape. When asked what has brought him back to Yorkshire, Gormley explained that the idea of exhibiting new work at Harewood House appealed as it has previously housed the iconic Adam by Jacob Epstein, one of the
Gormley obviously harbours a fondness for our part of the world and draws inspiration from the northern landscape While Two States offers a stirring depiction of the human form, it differs somewhat from previous Gormley works such as Another Place or Event Horizon with their more organic, naturalistic physicality. Two States came about, Gormley says, while developing what he calls the “Block-Block” works, which were an attempt to
explore a new language of sculpture. The result is what he describes as a kind of ‘pixellated cubism’ wherein the human body is represented as a figure comprised of squares or blocks. The thought process behind this, he explained, is based on man’s changing relationship to his surroundings - now that over half the world’s population live in urbanized areas, or, more specifically, within an urban grid system. This notion of the altered state of our physical environment is coupled with the integration of technology into our lives and the fact that our chief means of communication and exchange of information is conducted through bytes, bits and the pixels of computer interfaces.
W
hat struck me, when able to view Two States at close quarters, was how these figures, ostensibly abstract at the outset, reveal their humanity the longer you spend in their presence. As with many of Gormley’s sculptures, the initial casts were taken from his own six foot-something frame and, while we’re at first confronted with these twin towers of rusty iron blocks, before long one begins to sense that there is a human soul contained within the metallic grid, alive, aware and yearning to reconnect with the world at large. Two States will be on show at Harewood House until 30th October. Interviewed by Brendan Campbell

BY MARILYN BOARDMAN
Marilyn Boardman’s first novel 292 Albion Place has just been made available on Amazon Kindle. The book was created whilst flying back and forth from Leeds to DĂźsseldorf to settle her daughter into her year abroad. These trips made her realise how much she loved her home town and how much she wanted to share the transformations her city had undergone with others. She decided to weave an intriguing novel around familiar landmarks in the city 292 Albion Place is the story of Nigel and Lorraine who establish two businesses at this address on a street of trendy coffee shops. Nigel struggles with his new cafĂŠ ‘Hot Stuff!’ downstairs, whilst upstairs Lorraine’s hairdressing salon ‘Chic’ immediately prospers.
The book was created whilst flying back and forth from Leeds to DĂźsseldorf Their working days are far from mundane. Nigel’s plans for an anniversary surprise are almost ruined when ‘Hot Stuff!’ is used in a police stake out. Upstairs a member of staff starts delving into the unknown and it’s not long before ‘Chic’ salon is plagued by ghostly hauntings. Plus, Lorraine is a lady with an extremely colourful past – unfortunately, the past has a way of catching up with you. A fascinating story set in the heart of Leeds. Leeds Wellbeing Centre Supporting people with mental and physical health issues Leeds Wellbeing Centre was established in 2009 by local charity Multiple Choice. Their aim was to provide talking and complementary therapies at a subsidised rate for disadvantaged adults across Leeds. The Centre provides a very real form of support for people who generally struggle to cope with daily life for either mental or physical health reasons. It gives them some release from their problems and the support and therapies they receive help to increase their self-esteem and confidence. Now in its second year Leeds Wellbeing Centre is going from strength to strength. The Centre also sees private clients and the funds generated go directly towards supporting disadvantaged adults. The Centre recently added acupuncture, auricular acupuncture and aromatherapy to the range of therapies on offer. Readers of North Leeds Life can get 10% discount off all full price treatments until October 31st 2011. For more information visit www. leedswellbeingcentre.org.uk or call 0113 244 4546

New Control Vehicle for Fell Rescue Team The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue team now has a brand new Incident Control Vehicle packed with stateof-the-art communications. It took over four years, and a lot of hard work from team members and their partners, to raise the required funds – which had to be in addition to the £35,000 needed just to keep the team going. The detailed specification for both the vehicle and the sophisticated communications equipment needed for the team’s demanding rescue work in the Dales took months to prepare. It includes a 40 foot electronic mast that extends at the touch of a button – a major advance on manhandling an antenna
against the elements! The vehicle also needed to be able to transport up to four control and c o m m u n i c a t i o n s team members. “The old trailer was 30 years old and just had a couple of radios and no heating!” said Transport Officer Mike Brown. “It was pretty grim in winter and, as it only had room for one person, discussions with our controllers, the police and other key personnel had to done outside. We had to make it work but it was hard going. We are thrilled with our new vehicle. It has given us a real boost.” The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue team, based in Grassington, is the third oldest team in the country and consists of over 80 highly trained volunteers who are on call 365 days a year. In their 63 years of service
they have never failed to provide a team when asked. Last year they handled over 40 call outs. They are one of only three teams in the country who perform both surface and underground rescues - all three are in the Yorkshire Dales. The team would like to thank the local people for their generosity in helping them to acquire this vehicle.

It’s changed my life and I can now walk further than I’ve been able to for years.” You can find out more about what the Bowen Technique can do for your quality of life by giving Rachael a call or visit www.complementarytherapistyorkshire.co.uk.
If the answer to any of the above is “yes”, then you may well be thinking that it’s “just how it is” or “just part of getting older” and “I’ve just got used to it”. It doesn’t have to be that way! Pain and stiffness are the body’s way of letting us know there’s a problem. The Bowen Technique is a therapy that offers a drug free way to try and resolve your problems by aiming to relieve tension, reduce pain and promote healing. What makes the technique such a good choice is that although it’s a bodywork therapy it’s extremely gentle; even the most painful joint or muscle can be treated, and it works on the whole body; vital for many as the root cause of pain is not always obvious. As a satisfied client says “I was told by two medical profes-

WIN FAMILY TICKETS FOR PLAYHOUSE’S FABULOUS CHRISTMAS SHOWS! We had a word with The West Yorkshire Playhouse and they have agreed to run a competition giving our readers the opportunity to win a Family Ticket (two adults and two children), plus dinner at The Playhouse (two courses and a glass of wine/juice), for either Annie or Jack and The Beanstalk. This is the first new UK production of Annie (suitable for age 7+) for a decade and, with the same team behind it as last year’s critically acclaimed A Christmas Carol, it promises to be a fantastic show. You can look forward to all the classic songs like It’s A Hard Knock Life, Tomorrow, Little Girls and Fully Dressed. Annie and her band of orphans take charge of the Quarry stage from Monday 21st November – Saturday 21st January 2012, eternally optimistic that the sun will come out tomorrow. Award-winning playwright Mike Kenny, Gail McIntryre and Barney George add more than a little magic to Christmas for the Playhouse’s smallest, but most discerning, audience members (age 4+) with their version of Jack and The Beanstalk. With a twist in its tale, you can bet that this will be no ordinary Jack, no ordinary beanstalk, no ordinary farm and certainly no ordinary animals! Beautiful, harp-playing Pearl, owner of some music-loving chickens, is taken by a giant to live in the clouds and they have to get her back....then the fun begins! This fun show runs from Friday 9th December – Saturday 21st January.
To win a Family Ticket for Annie, all you have to do is complete the following line: The Sun Will Come Out......... To win a Family Ticket and dinner for Jack and The Beanstalk, just name the harp-playing girl. Email your answers to wypcomp@wyp.org.uk by Monday 31st October, including your contact details and stating clearly which show you would like a Family Ticket to.
