popular footbridge over the River Wharfe at Wood Hall, Linton near Wetherby, re-opened earlier this year, after being closed for more than two years, after the floods of 2013 sent a tree crashing into the stone buttresses, dislodging them and making the bridge unsafe. The timber and iron footbridge was designed and built by the Perseverance Iron Foundry on Kirkstall Road (opposite the Radio Aire Studios) in 1868 and it became a popular crossing point on the Ebor Way from York to Ilkley. In 2012, the White Rose Way, a new, long distance footpath from Leeds City Square to Scarborough, also made use of the bridge. Following its closure, walkers were forced to divert along the busy A659. Following lobbying by Parish Councils and local people, North Yorkshire County Council agreed to repair the bridge, which was at risk
of demolition without replacement. The River Wharfe is the boundary between North and West Yorkshire, with the County Councils taking responsibility for alternate bridges. In this case the bridge fell within the remit of North Yorkshire. A re-opening ceremony was held in May. “This has re-opened many circular walks which have been sorely missed”, said Councillor Tim Swales, Chairman of the County Council. “It has also eliminated the dangers faced by walkers of the two long distance footpaths, who have had to brave the dangerous Collingham to Harewood A-road.” The bridge should be good for at least another 150 years.

ROBERT ARTHINGTON (1823-1900) THE MILLIONAIRE MISER
In the later years of the nineteenth century an odd, gloomy figure was to be seen from time to time in Headingley village, buying a few necessities of life, dressed in old clothes green with age and an ancient stovepipe hat passed down from his father. This was Robert Arthington, often called ‘the Headingley miser’, the subject of much talk and speculation in his lifetime and legendary after his death for his legacies of over a million pounds. rom 1870 until shortly before he died in 1900 he lived a strange, reclusive life in his home at 57 Headingley Lane, close to St Michael’s Church. But his story begins in Hunslet, where he was born in 1823 to a wealthy Quaker family. Their money came from the family brewery, which his father gave up on grounds of conscience to devote himself to the cause of temperance. Robert, the only son of four children, studied at Cambridge, but chose not to take a degree. In his twenties he left the Society of Friends and found a spiritual home with the Baptists. When his father died in 1864, he found that he had inherited an enormous fortune of over £200,000. He determined to devote this money to good causes, in particular to promote missionary work around the world in the unknown areas then being explored and opened up in Africa, India and China. His passion was to spread the gospel among ‘the heathen’ and, as he saw it, shine light into darkness: this was the way to bring about ‘the second coming’. He was in touch with the missionary explorers David Livingstone and Stanley, and supported some of their ventures, though only if they met with his approval: he could be demanding.
Over the years he gave enormous sums to the Baptist and other missionary societies, and took a particular interest in Africa, especially Liberia, where he helped to fund the settlement of freed American slaves. A town in Liberia was named after him in recognition of his support, and in 1869 he was appointed consul in Leeds for Liberia. But he did not neglect his home town, giving large donations to various charitable purposes in Leeds, while he himself increasingly chose to live in self-imposed poverty on just a few shillings a week. Until his late forties he stayed in his family home in Hunslet, until a sudden change in his life around 1870. The story goes that he fell in love, and this led him to have a large new house in Headingley Lane built for himself and his hoped-for bride – but he was refused. It’s said that he approached other possible candidates for marriage, to no avail. True or not, it is certain that from then on he retreated further and further into a strange, lonely life. He lived and slept (wrapped in his coat) in only one room, sunless, unheated, thick with dust, lit by just one candle, while the rest of the house remained empty and unfinished. He received almost no visitors – people were brusquely turned away. No one saw him smile, and his greeting was always an enquiry after your soul. (His dark stone house is still there, its entrance turned away from the road, divided now into flats.) Meanwhile his wealth multiplied. He had invested wisely and spent nothing on his own comfort. Although he gave so much away, he was amazed himself at the riches that kept accumulating. In the last year of his life he gave away over £60,000 to charities, including £20,000 to the fund for the Leeds Hospital for Women and Children. When the new hospital opened at Cookridge in 1905 it was named after him. When he died in 1900, his estate topped a million pounds. Almost
all of it went to the missionary societies with which he had been so closely involved and whose work he had passionately supported. This stunning gift (‘Arthington’s million’) helped to provide hospitals and schools as well as missions in remote areas in India and Africa, some of them still in existence today. There his name and his generosity are still warmly remembered, and the label of miser (which stung him when he heard some small boys shout after him) is forgotten.

From Waterloo to Peterloo – Malcolm Chase Explains The first lecture in the Thoresby Society’s 2015-16 programme is on Monday 21st September, 7.15pm at the Friends’ Meeting House, Woodhouse Lane, LS2 9DY, when Professor Malcolm Chase, Professor of Social History in the School of History at the University of Leeds, will present ‘From Waterloo to Peterloo and its aftermath: A Leeds and West Yorkshire Perspective’. Professor Chase will explain how Peterloo enraged public opinion on both sides of the Pennines. It was a contributing factor to a serious breakdown in political stability the following year. The Cato Street conspiracy is generally the only thing remembered about 1820. That was in London; but there was widespread unrest, including risings in the West Riding (centred on Huddersfield) and in west central
of fine art and
Scotland. Leeds was closely linked into these insurrectionary plans. Indeed, a local schoolmaster, Joseph Brayshaw, was the key link between Yorkshire and Scottish revolutionaries. He probably

Chase’s
main
conclusion will be that 1820 was the closest peacetime Britain ever came to revolution. Malcolm Chase’s most recent book, ‘1820: Disorder & Stability in the United Kingdom’, is now out in paperback. The English Historical Review, has described it as ‘marvellous, intelligent, accessible and original ... the book is a triumph’. This lecture is open to all those interested. There is no charge.

Following on from last month’s ‘Let Your Home Reflect Your Personality’, we thought you might enjoy a complementary but contrasting spotlight on the style of another North Leeds resident. o say Tony Wilson’s interior design modus operandi is different to Vanessa’s is an understatement (tonywilsondesigns@icloud.com). What we loved about V’s was her eclecticism and her sense of freedom. But there’s room in Blackbird’s pan-stylistic heart for all orientations. Tony’s influences are Robin & Lucienne Day, Joe Colombo, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe et al, so it’s not surprising that he has a much more measured, tailored and, dare we say, self-conscious sense of style. But it is one that works and is breathtaking – we’re talking glossy Sunday supplement style section but without the suspiciously well behaved children and the manicured dog. Tony describes his style as ‘classic crossover’: a fusion of 20th century furniture and art with period Victorian architecture, starting with a simple white colour scheme, highlighting original features - panelled doors, delicate stucco detail on walls and ceilings. “They naturally present an intriguing backdrop for contemporary additions”, he says, “like bright artwork and 20th century furniture, with an emphasis on iconic pieces.” Much to our liking, he mixes in the occasional piece of ethnic woodcraft and, to facilitate a true crossover, he tries to choose pieces that will become all the more beautiful over time. He is a stalwart ‘guerilla’ collector, and has spent many Sundays scouring Camden Market and flea markets in the South of
A fusion of 20th century furniture and art with period Victorian architecture
www.blackbird-vintage.co.uk France. The ethnic woodcraft pieces are from South Bali and Sri-Lanka; Andalusian pottery and ceramics from his time in Spain. “Since moving to Leeds I have a new adventure, looking around places like Blackbird, just down the road from me, and most of the artwork is from a progressive gallery that supports young artists.”
Tony’s Top Tips are: • Keep it simple. • Give space to pieces that need it, don’t just fill space!
• Organised chaos is cool, chaos alone is not. • Respect old property – work with and around it, and try not to change its character (new can sit perfectly well with old). • Always start with white to give the maximum feeling of space. You can always add colour when you are more comfortable with a new look. • Be mindful of magazine trends (this month’s must-have could turn out to be next month’s “why did I buy that”!). Trends are useful, just make sure they are right for you and your home.

CONTINUING THE JOURNEY
As children head back to school and students to uni, many of us start wondering if, perhaps, we should pick up a particular interest or head off in a completely new direction. There is a huge choice around Leeds – from individual courses through places like The Swarthmore Centre, Leeds City College and the WEA, to language and degree courses at Leeds Beckett and Leeds Trinity Universities, and wonderfully creative courses in art and dance.
A CREATIVE COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE Leeds College of Art is one of only a few remaining independent art schools in the UK, and the only one in Yorkshire! It offers a wide range of courses…from its Young Creatives courses (for children as young as seven), to further education, degrees to an MA, and short courses for adults.
The College offers its students a creative community experience. It is a specialist, friendly and small institution… with big ambitions! With state-of-the-art resources and industry standard studios, along with tutors who are practicing artists and designers themselves, it’s no surprise that the College’s current and past students win highly prestigious awards and international competitions.
Recent wins and successes include the Designext Award at Surtex, a New Designers 2015 Award, the Woon Foundation Art and Sculpture discretionary prize, Alumni Choice Award at New Design Britain Awards, and the ‘ILFORD PHOTO Student Photographer of the Year 2014, the list goes on… World renowned artists and sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth studied at Leeds College of Art, and more recent alumni include, Damien Hirst, Marcus Harvey and film director Clio Barnard. Our courses offer a wide range of benefits. But don’t just take our word for it, here’s what one of our students had to say ...
Andy Haslam Beginners Spanish “I’d always fancied learning Spanish simply for personal development, so when the flyer dropped through my letterbox I had no excuse not to get involved. The evening class was a very good grounding for learning the basic fundamentals for listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. It’s also a great stepping stone for further study, which I’m hoping to take up in the future.”

Royal New Zealand Ballet makes its Leeds debut
This Autumn, the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre will welcome Royal New Zealand Ballet for the first time, and there will be returning visits from Ballet Black, Phoenix Dance Theatre, James Cousins and Northern Ballet. Phoenix Dance Theatre presents its annual showcase from 30th September – 3rd October with Phoenix @ Home - a blend of soaring aerial dance and contemporary choreography in Sharon Watson’s ‘Melt’, Ivgi and Greben’s ‘Document’ and Darshan Singh Bhuller’s ‘Mapping’. ‘Phoenix Presents…’ on 30th September brings the work of award-winning choreographers Sally
Marie and John Ross to the theatre, alongside Caroline Finn’s darkly comic ‘Bloom’. Northern Ballet’s latest ballet for children, ‘Tortoise & the Hare’, will première from 22nd – 26th October. Choreographed by dancers Dreda Blow and Sebastian Loe it is set to an original score by Bruno Merz. Royal New Zealand Ballet makes its debut in Leeds on 3rd and 4th November, with a mixed programme that celebrates New Zealand and Pasifika culture. ‘Mixed Programme: A Passing Cloud’ will feature three European premières with works from Javier de Frutos and New
Zealand choreographers Andrew Simmons and Neil Ieremia, and Andonis Foniadakis. James Cousins Company presents ‘Without Stars’ and ‘There We Have Been’ on 14th November – a powerful double bill inspired by Haruki Murakami’s novel, ‘Norwegian Wood’. On 20th and 21st November, Ballet Black presents ‘Second Coming’, a gothic fairytale created by chorographer Mark Bruce (Dracula). This triple bill also features Kit Holder’s ‘To Fetch a Pail of Water’ and Will Tuckett’s ‘Depouillement’. Tickets for the Autumn season are available from 0113 220 8008 or theatreleeds.com
rom Adam Long, founding member of The Reduced Shakespeare Company and co-creator of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) comes Dickens Abridged – a fast-paced musical comedy. An absurdly talented cast of four brings hundreds of the great author’s best-loved characters to life in 70 minutes of madcap Dickensian mayhem. This is a high-speed comic journey through Dickens’ Greatest Hits, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations (complete with flaming bride), David
Copperfield, Bleak House in less than sixty seconds, A Tale of Two Cities featuring a fully functioning guillotine, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, and, of course... A Christmas Carol. It also delves into the bizarre but true story of Charles Dickens’ own life, including his complicated romantic entanglements and his inexplicable enthusiasm for performing the bludgeoning scene from Oliver Twist over and over and over again. A singing, dancing love-letter to the life and works of the great man and unlike any Dickens-based show you’ve ever seen before.

Halifax recently launched its inaugural Halifax Comedy Festival – ten days of hilarity and over 50 events in 14 amazing venues, which will run from Friday 23rd – Saturday 31st October. he festival is the brainchild of Halifax’s Victoria Theatre which, along with friends and partners, has worked for over a year to create what will be one of the largest comedy festivals in the region, establishing Halifax as a seriously funny place to be. Major names such as Andy Hamilton, Alistair McGowen and Jasper Carrott will all be appearing, along with many other household names, and 12 shows will be coming directly from the Edinburgh Fringe. There will also be the Festival’s very own Hidden Theatre, plus a Festival Comedy Café running from 1pm at the Victoria Theatre all week where you can meet friends before or after a show, plan and book your Festival day or just soak up the whole Festival vibe. County Alpacas from Sowerby Bridge are supporting the Festival and will be out and about in Halifax during the Festival - keep your eyes peeled for the comedy alpacalypse! “The Victoria Theatre already has a reputation for bringing world class comedy to Halifax, and the Comedy Festival will build on this, showcasing other fantastic Halifax venues and great comedy from both established and up and coming performers”,

eritage Masterworks Chorale is all set to perform at St Mark’s Church, Woodhouse, on Saturday 12th September at 7.30pm. Despite being Leeds-based, the Chorale rarely performs in its home town. Generally they are on tour ‘taking the finest music to the finest venues’. This has seen them sing in cathedrals, churches and stately homes around the North, as well as abroad. Earlier this year they completed a hugely successful tour in New York and, later this year, they will travel to Paris where they will perform Faure’s Requiem
in La Madeleine, the church for which it was written. St Mark’s Church is a historic church that was built after the Battle of Waterloo, fell into disrepair and closed its doors in 2001. It stood derelict for five years before being bought by Gateway Church. Since then, the building has been cleaned, the roof and tower restored, and the interior has received a complete makeover. It re-opened in March 2014 and the acoustics are better than ever. The concert will take you on ‘A Chorale Journey’, featuring music
from many different countries and stretching across 500 years. Tickets are available from www.heritagechorale.org.uk or Yorkshire College of Music on 0113 243 1605.

Northern Ballet is committed to making ballet accessible for everyone, whether it is participating in a workshop or watching a dance performance. Offering programmes for children and adults, as well as specific projects for those with learning difficulties or physical disabilities, Northern Ballet reaches more than 50,000 participants annually and plays a vital role in enabling more people to access dance. ecently, the company hosted ‘Expressions’ at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, bringing together 75 participants from nine different dance groups from across the North of England and giving disabled dancers the chance to showcase their skills on a professional stage. Dancers from two of Northern Ballet’s programmes, Ability and ‘in motion’, performed. Ability is a programme designed for adults aged 16+ with mild to moderate learning difficulties. The course helps participants to improve their dance and performance skills, develop their communication and social interaction skills, and enables creativity and expression. ‘in motion’ was created for 8 – 19 year old self-propelling wheelchair users, and explores movement in and out of a wheelchair, aiming to develop strength, flexibility and creative expression. “Expressions emphasised the importance of making dance accessible to all by providing opportunities for disabled people to watch and participate in high quality dance”, said
Selina McGonagle, Northern Ballet’s Director of Learning. “Our programmes provide the support and remove barriers to engagement for people with special needs.”
Northern Ballet has also created opportunities for visually impaired audiences to engage with dance. It offers audio described performances accompanied by a touch tour, enabling audiences to feel the props and costumes, and giving an insight into the movements from the production, assisted by the dancers. Northern Ballet offers ‘relaxed performances’ for their ballets for children, which are aimed at people with autism and sensory or communication disorders. An extra ‘relaxed performance’ has been added for their latest ballet for children ‘Tortoise & the Hare’, which premieres in September. raffiti artists from across the UK have joined forces to transform one of Sunnybank Mill’s buildings into a colourful installation of street art, entitled ‘Throw Up!’, as part of their Summer ‘Colour and Community’ programme. More than 40 artists will bring the space to life with an explosion of colour. The event is curated by gallery intern Ryan Smith, who, in addition to curating exhibitions, recycles and customises skateboards, creates furniture from found objects and works as an illustrator. He has brought together illustrators, painters, printers and graffiti artists, including illustrator Carrot Boy (aka Gravy Man), who worked with Leeds artist Lord Whitney, on the set design for a music video for American rap star, Nicki Minaj; graphics specialist Jay Pee; Leeds installation artist Pogger; abstract colourist Nicolas Dixon – who recently exhibited in New York; and members of the Assembly House Artists Collective in Armley. Visitors will be invited to add a splash of paint or imaginative illustration at workshops in August and September, and a world record attempt to create
the world’s longest painted carrot will be just one way they can make their mark. “It will be fascinating to see how the old weaving shed, which used to be at the heart of operations, will be transformed for this project”, said Jane Kay, Gallery Manager, “not just by the artists but by everyone who
comes to our workshops and puts their own creative stamp onto the walls.” ‘Throw Up!’ will be open every Saturday in August and September from 11am – 3pm, and will include free workshops with a street artist. For full details, visit www. sunnybankmills.co.uk

Shakespeare’s Richard III (history’s most misunderstood monarch) comes to West Yorkshire Playhouse in a powerful new production from 25th September – 17th October. He thinks he can’t feel guilt but is then torn apart by the consequences
irected by Mark Ro s e n b l a t t (w h o s e previous work at the Playhouse includes, Uncle Vanya, Untold Stories and Of Mice and Men), Richard III is the most bloodthirsty and brutal of Shakespeare’s history plays – a dark, funny vision of dirty politics and the price we are prepared to pay for power. It examines the consequences of killing and the guilt and fallout following such diabolical acts.
“I’ve been thinking about this play for years”, said Mark. “I was really drawn to the fact that it’s about an angry outsider trying to shake things up, and all the cunning things he does to get what he wants. But when do you actually cross the line and your conscience click in? He thinks he can’t feel guilt but is then torn apart by the consequences of killing. We watch the effect it has on his mind.”
The title role is played by Reece Dinsdale, who has a long association with the Playhouse. In fact he performed in ‘Wild Oats’ the theatre’s opening production 25 years ago! Reece last appeared at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in the highly acclaimed ‘Untold Stories’, playing Alan Bennett, when he also worked with Mark. He says the challenge is how to portray Richard’s lust for power, but at the same time exude charm and charisma. “Alan Bennett and Richard III couldn’t be further apart!” said Mark. “Reece is so energetic and cares so much about what he does. Here he is in a strange psychological space….it’s going to be very interesting.” The setting of the play is contemporary but has no particular year or context. Conor Murphy’s design creates a strange, surreal world. The state of Richard’s mind, and his confusion after such terrible acts, is reflected in this stark, minimalistic design. This September we celebrate our tenth year of publishing a community magazine in North Leeds! e launched ‘The Headingley Directory’ in September 2005, which coincided neatly with the first ‘Celebrate Headingley’, whose poster was emblazoned in bright pink on the cover of our 28-page debut. Meanwood Matters followed hot on its heels in 2006; then the individual Weetwood, Adel, Cookridge, Horsforth, Bramhope and Pool-in-Wharfedale ‘Life’ magazines a year later. We even pushed on to Otley, Menston and Ilkley for a while!
We soon realised that there were too many balls in the air! So we drew in our horns, dropped Otley, Menston and Ilkley and moved instead to Chapel Allerton, Moortown, Roundhay and Allwoodley – giving us a nice sweep across North Leeds. We increased both the physical size and the pagination of the magazine in 2011 and today we produce just two editions – one for LS6, LS16 and LS18, and the other for LS7, LS8, and LS17 – both under the name North Leeds Life, both currently at 100 + pages. Although it has been a bit of a roller coaster ride, publishing our magazines has been a real privilege. We have met wonderful people and never cease to be amazed at people’s determination and invention. We have discovered

clubs and organisations and introduced them to others. We have helped local organisations grow from strength to strength. We have given people a voice, encouraged participation and marveled at what a vibrant community North Leeds is. Of course, we couldn’t operate without the support of our brilliant advertisers. Our first edition had just 29 advertisers (nearly half of whom still advertise with us today!) and now we regularly feature over 200 local businesses. Today we remain a tight little team – still family run, independent, and without any

n the early part of this year, the Steering Group for Headingley Neighbourhood Plan consulted with all those who live, work or study in Headingley Neighbourhood. They circulated over 5,000 leaflets and contacted nearly 300 organisations. Since then, they have been studying the results. The first thing that they asked about was the whole purpose of the Plan – its Vision. A public meeting last year canvassed views on what people wanted for Headingley. Residents said things like, ‘a village in a city … safe and friendly, for everyone’, ‘a cleaner more family centred place’, and ‘families return
to the area, a balance of young and old, residents and transients’. These views are borne out by the realities: there is an imbalance between the generations in Headingley, there are too few children to sustain the community in the long term, and it is difficult for families to move into the Neighbourhood. Leeds Core Strategy ‘aims for Leeds to be … fair, sustainable and inclusive’. And the National Planning Policy Framework says, ‘local planning authorities should create sustainable, inclusive and mixed communities’. So it seemed sensible to suggest that the Vision should

be ‘to develop a sustainable, inclusive and mixed community in Headingley’. The responses were overwhelmingly positive. There were some criticisms that the Vision was ‘bland’ or ‘general’ or ‘an advertising slogan’. Others suggested expanding the Vision – ‘encourage health and wellbeing’, or ‘create opportunities for employment and business’. But of all the responses, only a few had reservations, and 96% were supportive. T o f o l l o w progress, visit www. headingleyneighbourhoodplan. org.uk

hey spent a lovely afternoon at the Hall, where guides in original 18th century costumes showed them around. Interestingly, one of the members is a direct descendant of Grace Murgatroyd, eldest sister of the man who actually bought the Hall in 1638 and was responsible for the development of the eastern portion with its grand two-storied porch. The group handed the substantial cheque over to Property Manager Jonathan Brewer. Then Head Gardener Jill Saunders spoke about the new Dye Garden, which the group’s donations made possible. They also enjoyed a house tour, canal walk, and a magnificent cream tea made by the Friends of East Riddlesden Hall.
The Leeds National Trust group has over 300 members and has just celebrated its 40th year. It meets at St. Chad’s Parish Centre, Far Headingley, from October to April and has an interesting year round programme of outings, lunches, talks, fundraising events and holidays. You can be a local member without joining the main National Trust. The next meeting is on Tuesday 13th October at 10am you can attend as a visitor. The SSAFA in West Yorkshire A commemoration service was held at Wakefield Cathedral recently to celebrate the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) 130 years of service in West Yorkshire. Today, SSAFA is the oldest military charity in the UK, helping veterans and serving military personnel, their families and carers in a variety of ways – such as sourcing and supplying goods and services such as fridges, washing machines, furniture, mobility scooters etc. It does this by approaching the regimental welfare funds of the regiment served with, going as far back as World War II and National Service. And, it continually adapts to the changing needs of our Forces and their families. In 1944, General Montgomery wrote “In the knowledge that his family at home is being well cared for by SSAFA, the soldier fighting overseas may wholeheartedly devote himself to his duty”. If you are serving or have ever served in the Royal Navy, Regular or Territorial Army or the RAF, then SSAFA is there for you and your family. In West Yorkshire SSAFA has 60 caseworkers and fundraisers, but is always on the lookout for more volunteers. If you feel you can help by either becoming a caseworker, fundraiser or helper, contact 0113 244 9254 or wyorkshire@ssafa.org.uk

Permitted Development Changes In the last few years, changes to permitted development have allowed more flexibility than previously. They allow certain types of development to go ahead without the need for planning permission. The idea is to help businesses to make best use of their premises; deliver more homes; support high streets and retailers; and allow larger home and business extensions
osaic, a mentoring initiative founded by HRH The Prince of Wales, introduces positive role models to less advantaged pupils in primary schools. The aim is to lift their aspirations. Mentors work with students from Years 4 and 5 (ages 9 /10) and their parents on subjects like good communication and citizenship. Students are encouraged to think about their career aspirations and to broaden their horizons in terms of their education and work ambitions.
where they are sustainable and support the reuse of buildings. They were initially for a period of three years, which would have run out in 2016, but has now been extended to 2019, but it is not permanent. Business use of buildings has various classifications, and changes between one use and another will be made more easily using the new permitted development rights. For example, retailers can now provide for one ‘click and collect’ facility within the curtilage of their premises, without permission. Floor space and height must be within the allowable limits. Shops can change to financial and professional services without planning permission for change of use. More controversial is the increase in allowable larger house extensions. Planning permission is no longer required for depth of single storey extensions up to eight metres (previously 4m) for detached houses and up to six
Mosaic is currently recruiting successful, positive volunteers to be role models and to inspire these young people. There is great scope for self-development and improving leadership skills and it is incredibly rewarding. The programme runs for ten weeks with nine classroom sessions and a graduation event.
metres (previously 3m) for other house types, in non-protected areas. There is still a requirement for neighbour notification but where no objections are received within 21 days, permission is automatically granted. Figures gathered by Leeds City Council show that, compared to other councils, objections by neighbours are very few - around 6%, as opposed to up to 50%. As there is no requirement for planning permission, this translates into lost revenue for the Council, as each application would attract a fee and the Council estimates a loss of £56,000 in fees from householder extensions that would have required permission previously. However, the fee of £172 never covered the actual cost of administering the applications – so there could an overall cost saving to the Council.

The Headingley Festival of Ideas is coming back and will run from 3rd – 17th October, and this year the theme is ‘Change’. he Festival is made up of a series of exciting, community-led events that aim to bring people together and inspire debate and discussion. It is designed to appeal to Headingley’s diverse community as a whole, providing something for everyone. The opening event, ‘Actions for Sustainable Headingley’, run by Headingley Carbon Conversations, will bring together groups working on environmental sustainability and climate change. Other planned events include local poets performing new works written specially for the Festival; ‘Sound Tracks to Change’, featuring the Friends of Lawnswood Choir; ‘Experience change’ – a participative Daoist workshop by Lishi Tai Chi; ‘Comic Power’ by James Armstrong; and ‘Musical Changes’ – a jazz evening. Plus, you will be able to
find out how to use one’s voice for change; there will be an art installation at LeftBank; an exploration of Christian Pacifism; and a look at the kind of life changes experienced both by refugees and Ibi Knill, a well known Holocaust survivor. The Festival was inspired by the late Richard Crossley, OBE, a long-standing Headingley resident who was involved in many community activities, and is now run by a Festival committee of volunteers. A number of businesses, organisations, and the Ward Councillors have all supported fundraising efforts. The full programme will be available in September at HEART, Bennett Road, Headingley (0113 275 4548), local shops and venues, and Headingley Farmers’ Market on 12th September. hen Greta Earnshaw joined and then volunteered at Horsforth Live at Home, she had no idea just how much was on offer. In addition to the company, friendship and support for the older people of Horsforth, she found a huge variety of activities. “On Mondays members can do an exercise class or enjoy a pub lunch, walks, and crafts”, she told us. “Tuesday is bacon sandwiches day, followed by dancing. Wednesday is when members are taken shopping in the mini-bus. There’s a lunch club on Thursdays, which is great value, and there’s indoor bowls too. Friday is mobile phone morning, where members are taught how to do simple things
like texting so they can keep in touch with their friends and families. Holidays are arranged at very reasonable prices too. “We also have a singing group once a month which we call our ReminiSing group where people can come and enjoy songs which mean a lot to them. There are word sheets, but it is surprising how many of the words people remember. It’s great for the memory!” Last year, Horsforth Live at Home partnered with the local British Red Cross in a project called
HomeWard. Older people living alone may struggle with things like keeping food stocks up or remembering to take medication. Volunteers provide services such as bedside and community befriending, practical and social support. Already this scheme has supported 150 people. If you are over 60, live in Horsforth and would like to join Live at Home, call in on a Tuesday or Thursday. At present there are 564 members and 70 volunteers. They are always looking for volunteers, so drop in and talk it over. For further details, call 0113 259 1511, email horsforth. liveathome@mha.org.uk or visit www.mha.org.uk

a g t a i l s a re a m o n g t h e m o st attractive and fascinating birds to be seen around the UK. The pied wagtail is by far the most common – a bird as much at home in supermarket car parks as in farmland. It has a black and white head, black back, white underparts and a long black and white tail. It announces its presence with a whistling call that sounds like ‘chizzwit!’, and feeds mainly on insects and caterpillars. In Winter pied wagtails roost communally, sometimes in trees in town centres – so listen out for large groups twittering away as Christmas shoppers hurry by below oblivious. Grey wagtails have the longest tails of the three, and are elegant birds,
blue-grey above and bright yellow beneath. Mostly a bird of streams and rivers, they can turn up on any patch of water in Winter, including canals like the Leeds-Liverpool, and urban rivers such as the Aire. Yellow wagtails are the only migratory wagtail, with many subspecies breeding throughout Europe. Our race is called ‘flavissima’ – the ‘most yellow’ – and is a stunning bird with a vibrant yellow face and underparts, and an olive green back. It breeds in riversides and arable fields, but has sadly declined by over 50% in the last 25 years, possibly due to changes in farming practice.

weeds
Keep calm and carry on weeding There are two types of weeds: annual ones which tend to come up quickly from seeds but are easy to pull out, and perennial ones which usually anchor themselves with a deep root (like dandelions) or spread by runners and roots (like bindweed and couch grass). If you have lots of annual weed seedlings growing they can be hoed off on a dry day – just slice the sharp blade of the hoe across the surface of the soil and the weed seedlings will be severed from their roots to wither and die on the surface. The roots will not survive. Larger annual weeds can usually be pulled up by hand. The perennial sort is not so easy. They
need to be dug up carefully and all traces of anything that can re-grow such as roots, seeds, and for some plants even sections of stems, have to be removed. I like to put as much as I can on the compost heap so when I’m weeding I have two buckets – one for the things that go into the council garden waste bin, such as seed heads along with runners and roots of anything that might spread. The other is for annual weeds (with or without roots) and any weed plant leaves - all can be safely used to make compost.

are deliciously fragrant pinks and scented pelargoniums. By this time of year the pinks can be looking decidedly straggly. You can use them to create new plants for next year – here’s how…. When they become leggy, gently tug at a shoot of new growth until it comes away from the main plant. Remove any flower buds and push the small pieces into a pot filled with a 50:50 mix of compost and horticultural grit. Keep in a shady spot out of full sun. In six to eight weeks they will be rooted and ready to pot up. Keep in a cool place with good ventilation and drainage until Spring. A similar technique also works for the geraniums – just snip off a healthy shoot from the base, strip off the bottom few leaves and put into the same mix as the pinks. Once potted on into their own pots whey will thrive on a cool windowsill over Winter.

Widescreen Weekend, at the National Media Museum in Bradford from 15th – 18th October, is set to present an array of classics and rarities. The Museum is one of only three venues in the world capable of screening 70mm widescreen, three-strip Cinerama and 35mm film formats under one roof.
“This is the 19th Widescreen Weekend at the National Media Museum, and we continue to celebrate and enjoy some of the most remarkable cinematic experiences ever filmed”, said Duncan McGregor, Widescreen Weekend Curator. “The weekend mixes cast-iron classics, modern day widescreen films, and a few lesser-known titles. It demonstrates that throughout the history of the movies, cinema technology has constantly pushed the boundaries to provide the most exciting spectacle possible.” The weekend will feature the
classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! (1955, dir. Fred Zinneman), celebrating the 60th anniversary of the film. Other highlights are a 70mm screening of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (1968) on Pictureville’s immersive curved screen – the only cinema outside the USA capable of showing the seminal sci-fi epic in this format - and the European premiere of the digitally restored ‘The Best of Cinerama’ (1963), which is the only Cinerama film yet to be shown at the Museum. And, there’ll be a dynamic three-projector screening of ‘How

The Weekend also hosts the second Student Widescreen Film of the Year award, continuing the Museum’s collaboration with BKSTS, The International Moving Image Society, in the society’s promotion of widescreen aesthetics and production values in UK film schools, with competition screenings of new short films. In typical Tiger Lillies style, this twisted and grimy cabaret will reimagine some of Porter’s best loved classics including ‘My Heart Belongs to Daddy’, ‘Love for Sale’ and ‘Miss Otis Regrets’ as well as hits from his most famous musicals. Sounds on the Streets is a busking competition run by Simon on the Streets, an independent charity that works with people who are homeless and rootless, especially those with issues related to rough sleeping. The competition is open to all street musicians. The aim is to highlight the city’s street music talent whilst raising funds and awareness of the charity’s work.
he competition heats will take place the 5-8th October in Leeds Trinity Kitchens, a semi –final will be held on 9th October as part of the Light Night festival and the Grand Final will be on the 9th December. We might have a romantic idea of buskers as homeless people with a guitar and a talent. The reality is that this is not the case, the vast majority of buskers are musicians in their own right, and they are not living on the streets. However, there are key connections between street music and the work of Simon on the Streets. Music requires and invokes empathy, which is the key skill practiced by the Simon on the Streets team in their outreach, street based work. The hope is that the sound of the streets will be truly reflected in the competition, with an array of eclectic and diverse musical voices. Applications will be accepted up until 27th September. If you are a musician and would like to enter please complete your application here: bitly.com/soundsonthestreets and please do share and help spread the word. he Ocean Film Festival World Tour returns to The Carriageworks on 23rd September, featuring a brand new selection of the world’s most captivating ocean-themed short films. The festival, which originates in Australia, will be shown in 24 towns and cities across the UK. Designed to mesmerise and enthral, it showcases over two hours of sublime footage taken above and below the water’s surface. The films document the beauty and power of the ocean, and celebrate the divers, surfers, swimmers and oceanographers who live for the sea’s salt spray; who chase the crests of waves; and who marvel at the mysteries of the big blue. The
FILM
REVIEW BY BRENDAN CAMPBELL
THE LEGEND OF BARNEY THOMSON DIRECTED BY: : ROBERT CARLYLE STARRING: : ROBERT CARLYLE, EMMA THOMPSON, RAY WINSTONE CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 96 MINS obert Carlyle, a skilled actor with an impressive and varied body of work behind him, makes a promising, if flawed, directorial debut with this grim, grimy, gleefully macabre black comedy of errors. Carlyle plays the titular Barney, an awkward, shorttempered Glaswegian barber brimming with resentment and bitterness. Barney’s miserable existence, split between the indignities he suffers in his workplace and at the hands of his harridan of a mother (Emma Thompson), grows ever more desperate as a series of unfortunate events see his fortunes become entwined with those of a serial killer. The serial killer storyline is established at the outset as the film sets out its stall with grisly shots of body parts received through the mail, alerting the audience to the slightly queasy-making nature of the proceedings to follow. We’re introduced to the police on the case, chiefly detective Holdall (Ray Winstone) a grizzled copper from (where else?) London who clearly considers himself to be on the wrong side of the border. When one of Barney’s colleagues meets an accidental, untimely
standout turn in the film, and one of the chief reasons to recommend it, is Emma Thompson playing radically against type
end Barney becomes a suspect and grows ever more hysterical as things spiral out of his control and the net closes in around him. If all this doesn’t sound strikingly original then that’s probably because the plot machinations at work here and the tropes employed are so familiar as to appear hackneyed. Unintentional homicide, mistaken identity, a police/killer game of cat and mouse, a hapless protagonist in over his head and cracking under the pressure; we’ve seen it all done before and often done better. While initially happy to go along for the ride, the dogged trudge of pushing the narrative along, while also trying to exploit the (admittedly rich) potential for characterbased comedy, sees the film lose focus and momentum around
the midway point and a vague sense of exasperation creeps in. The ‘big reveal’ in the third act is so well signposted that it lacks any discernible impact or surprise. That said, although The Legend of Barney T h o m s o n promises more on paper than it delivers on screen, it’s not all that bad. It’s well shot with a suitably grubby aesthetic and good use is made of the insalubrious locations. There’s a smattering of amusing comedic set pieces throughout and touches of a vintage rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack adds to the retro-kitchen sinkthrowback feel of the piece. As for the eye catching cast list, it turns out to be something of a mixed bag. Carlyle, always a forceful screen presence, is decent enough in the lead, even if his Barney as a bag of nerves verges on the hammy, there’s also flashes of the barely contained rage he does so well. Winstone,
usually reliable, often brilliant, is very much phoning it in here, remaining on Ray Winstone Autopilot for the duration. The great Ashley Jenson is criminally underused, as is Tom Courtney who is briefly glimpsed but hilarious when he shows up. The standout turn in the film, and one of the chief reasons to recommend it, is Emma Thompson playing radically against type. Aided by what I imagine to be some pretty heavy lifting in the hair and make-up department, her Cemolina is presented as a grotesque amalgam of Bet Lynch and Dot Cotton, her skin the colour and texture of distressed oak and leather and her voice (a startlingly convincing Glaswegian accent) scraped from the gutter and applied roughly to the ear. Otherwise, what should be a superb ensemble cast sadly adds up to less than the sum of its parts.

Solicitor Sarah Smith, who lives in Meanwood, is fundraising throughout this year for the Bhopal Medical Appeal.
ast year she raised £496 in the Brighton marathon and £358 in this year’s London marathon, and recently set up a Justgiving page to continue to raise money throughout 2015. Sarah has completed the Timeless Way route through the Outer Hebrides, a long distance route of 230 miles, over 10 days. She ran the Lakeland 50, a 50 mile event from Dalemain to Coniston, on 25th July, the Long Tour of Bradwell, a 33 mile trail run in the Peak district, on 8th August, and The Snowdonia 50, in Snowdonia National Park on 22nd August. She’s also taking part in The Yorkshireman Off Road Marathon on 13th September, the Full Tour of Pendle fell race on 14th November, and the Auld Lang Syne Fell race in Haworth on 31st December. To say she’s a keen runner is putting it mildly! Sarah started
running in 2007 and has steadily built up her distance from 5k to 60 miles having completed the Hardmoors 60 and the Fellsman. On 2nd December 1984 the Union Carbide pesticide factory leaked toxic gases that drifted straight into the heart of the old city of Bhopal. Half a million people were exposed to the gas and 25,000 people have died to date as a result of the exposure. Over 120,000 chronically ill survivors remain in desperate need of medical treatment. The Bhopal survivors inspired and set up the Bhopal Medical Appeal which provides free medical care to the survivors.

Leeds City FC Unveils New Changing Pavilion Leeds City FC recently unveiled its new changing room pavilion at Adel Sports & Social Club. The project was made possible thanks to a £50,000 grant from the Premier League, through the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF). This funding enabled the Club, who play in the Premier Division of the West Yorkshire Association Football League, to reconfigure and refurbish the existing building to create modern, clean and comfortable changing facilities. These now comprise two large selfcontained changing rooms with shower facilities and a separate officials’ changing room. The new facilities will allow Leeds City FC to meet all necessary FA ground grading requirements for their current level of play and immediate leagues above, as well as increasing opportunities for female participation. “It’s great to see that bodies, such as the Premier League, are giving a helping hand to clubs that show a willingness to provide opportunities to men, women and children to play sport”, said Mark McFarlane, Chairman, Leeds City FC. “The new changing facilities can be used by both genders and, thanks to the generous support of the FSIF, the club will continue to promote the appropriate standards of both grounds and changing facilities for their football teams.”
Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding
that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve
done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

ohn-Paul Ashton and his partner Katherine Foat, who live in Weetwood, are keen triathletes. One problem that they and other triathletes always faced was getting all their gear from car to transition area in one go, without having to enlist the help of another person. Available boxes were not big enough, bags too small and unorganised. There was nothing for it – they would have to create something themselves – and Triathlonbox was born!

There were months and months of experimentation in the garage. Models were tested and modified. John-Paul went through five different permutations before he felt he could go to a designer to get to the next level. “Triathlonbox was born out of my frustration on race day!” said John-Paul. “My aim was to solve the organisational and transportation problems that people have on triathlon day. We needed a better solution than the available boxes and bags.” John-Paul approached Trig Creative, a Yorkshirebased design company, and things moved into the fast lane. He attended various business shows to gather feedback and advice. In March John-Paul and Katherine attended

T u O B A G N i K N i H T CHOOSiNG A Education in Leeds is steadily improving. Children’s attainment levels have increased from early years to GCSE and attendance figures are apparently the best they have ever been. However, there is always room for improvement. Parents are more concerned than ever about getting their children into the school of their choice, and in some areas there is a drastic shortage of primary places. But there are still many more good and outstanding schools in Leeds than there were, and the Council is determined to drive up education standards for children and young people. Of course, alongside the mainstream schools, North Leeds also has a number of excellent private schools.
T
THROUGH EDUCATION AT GSAL At The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), children can take an educational journey of up to 15 years. At age three they can enter nursery at Rose Court, GSAL’s nursery and pre-prep department in Headingley, and progress through the Junior and Senior Schools, which share a campus at Alwoodley Gates.

many opportunities, including access to specialist teaching and facilities, a wide extracurricular programme and interaction between age groups through pupil mentoring and school
All are welcome to visit during their open mornings; www.gsal. org.uk
Pupils move to each new learning phase with confidence, thanks to carefully planned transition activities and their familiarity with their friendship group and the wider school. In Senior School they are taught under the ‘diamond model’, so children learn in single sex classes until GCSEs, while sharing form time and extracurricular activities. Naturally not all children will spend their whole school career in one place and GSAL welcomes applications at all stages up to year 10 and for sixth form. Being part of a big school offers

Fulneck School - So much going on! Reflecting on Success The Leeds Jewish Free School (LJFS) has just come to the end of its second year and is happily reflecting on what has been achieved.
The Summer term at Fulneck School was packed with inspirational trips and activities. In April, Sixth Form students held a mock General Election involving the whole school as voters. They spent the day debating with local Conservative MP Stuart Andrew and Labour candidate Jamie Hanley. The result was a hung parliament resulting in a Lab/ LibDem coalition! Twelve Physics students in the Seismology Club were selected to represent Fulneck at a Seismology workshop in Naples, Italy. The other three participating schools, from Nice, Naples and Torquay, will come to Fulneck in September to continue their work together. Sixth Form students Patricia Owino and Kara Farrar were honoured to be invited to visit Auschwitz for the ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project run by the Holocaust Educational Trust. Fulneck pupils support numerous charities and this year have been raising funds for research into Mitochondrial Disease. They were thrilled when TV presenter Gabby Logan came to Fulneck to launch a fundraising balloon race and spent time talking to them. One of the joys of being an international school is visits from pupils abroad. In June, they welcomed students from schools in Spain and Italy, who enjoyed learning about Yorkshire life. Fulneck is a day and boarding school located in Farsley. There is an Open Day on Saturday 26th September (9.30am – 1 pm) and a Sixth Form Information Evening on Tuesday 3rd November (7 – 9 pm). For further information, visit www.fulneckschool.co.uk
It continues to develop and grow its offering to students, and the small, focused nature of the school has already resulted in great success – with all students exceeding progress targets that were set well above the national average. At the end of the academic year, a prize giving ceremony recognized the phenomenal progress, contribution to the school, and special achievement of many students. Performing Arts was particularly strong and popular with students this year and their talent was showcased at the first ever LJFS Talent Show. “We are extremely proud of our students and are astounded at how much they have grown in confidence and capability’, said Cllr Dan Cohen, Chair of Governors. “It really is a pleasure to watch them thrive as they progress through High School.” LJFS also hosted its first ‘Assault Course Challenge Day’ this Summer with pupils from local schools taking part in an exciting inter-schools sports event. Students from LJFS acted as mentors and ambassadors on the day, helping their teams through the course and also managing to have lots of fun themselves. For further details, visit www.LJFS.org

The Froebelian School in Horsforth is a thriving, dynamic independent prep school that is consistently placed as the highest ranked school in the area in the prestigious Sunday Times Parent Power Survey.
The new Headteacher, Mrs Catherine Dodds, places children at the very heart of all the school strives to achieve and she is committed to equipping all the pupils in her care with a lifelong thirst for learning. Achieving impressive levels of academic success, the school prepares its children for the next stage in their educational journey. The school also offers a year-round nursery, First Steps, which nurtures younger children and provides rich experiences to start realising their full potential from an early age.
CLASSS (Community Leeds After School Study Support), a registered charity, was set up in 2008 to help children from North and East Leeds to develop and enhance their educational potential. It offers after school classes to help the children improve their skills in English, Maths and Science, and aims to tailor tuition to the specific needs of each individual student. CLASSS encourages the involvement of parents and schools to achieve this goal. CLASSS focuses on enrolling children who are in need of help with their schoolwork. It is not its policy to give places to children who are already making good progress. Classes are held on Thursday evenings at Technorth on Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton. Tips for an Open Day
Gateways School, Harewood, prides itself on providing an outstanding education for boys aged 2-11 and girls aged 2-18. Last year The Telegraph named Gateways as the ‘Third best, small independent school in the UK’. Find out about extra-curricular activities, trips and school meals. • Look out for Noticeboards: Is there lots going on for parents and pupils? • Pay attention to the general atmosphere: Do the staff and pupils look happy? How do they interact with each other? • Talk to the Head: The Head’s personality and values are crucial as these shape the ethos and culture of the school. If you are unable to speak with them on the day, arrange an appointment. For more information contact 0113 288 6345

Pupils from Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School, Meanwood, recently won four medals in the 2015 International Sports Federation for Catholic Schools Games (FISEC) in Malta.
Pictured: Megan Driscoll, Zara PaniaguaGutierrez, Conor Hopkinson and Jonathan Nyantou
onor Hopkinson (15) won Silver in the 4 x 400m relay and bronze in 4 x 100m relay. Swimmer Zara Paniagua-Gutierrez (13) took Silver in the 400m individual medley. Footballer Jonathan Nyantou (16) collected a Silver medal and scored the first goal for GB in 3 - 0 victory over The Netherlands. Another Cardinal Heenan pupil, Megan Driscoll (15) was selected as the female GB athletics captain for the games and finished fourth in the 3000m. Runner Conor missed out on a third medal by just 3/100ths of a second! “The Cardinal Heenan pupils represented Great Britain superbly, especially when they were up against older athletes” said Nick Forbes, Head of PE. “Zara was the youngest competitor at the games. We are very proud of all four, who regularly compete at county and national level
in their sports.” Cardinal Heenan was up against students from Austria, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Palestine, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, USA, Brazil and Croatia. Nominations for the GB squad were made by Catholic schools and colleges nationwide and times compared to select the strongest performers. Cardinal Heenan represented Great Britain at the opening and closing ceremonies. The FISEC Games are in their 67th year. Many competitors have gone on to achieve success at Olympic and Commonwealth level. The event is recognised by the International Olympic Committee and the Papal Office.
A Child’s Wartime Experience eetwood resident, Ann Flint, wrote her first book, ‘Charlotte’s Curtain Call’, for her twin daughters when they were very young and had it published in 2011, in time for her granddaughters to read it. She has now published a second book. ‘Ginger Josie in Wartime’ was fuelled by her granddaughters’ questions about World War II. She had been invited into several schools to talk about children’s lives during the war and started wondering who would answer children’s questions when she and her contemporaries were no longer able to. So, she decided to write a book about what it was like to be a child during the War. A story about children rather than battles, and from a child’s point of view.
A story about children rather than battles Josie is feisty and hot tempered and has no time for ‘girly’ girls and playing ‘nicely’. She has scant regard for rules, but still manages to enjoy life, despite the War. Ginger Josie in Wartime is available on Amazon.
