LOTTERY AWARD FOR LOCAL U3A GROUP Earlier this year Cookridge and Horsforth University of the Third Age (U3A) received a grant of รล5,830 from the Big Lottery Fund. The award will be used to develop and enhance this local U3A, founded in November 2008.
This successful group now has a membership of over two hundred and thirty members. Activities include regular meetings with a speaker on the first Monday of the month (10.30am, Cookridge Village Hall), plus over 30 diverse Interest Groups where members share their hobbies, knowledge and skills.
Part of the Lottery money has already been used to purchase equipment and resources for meetings, and to help establish new groups including Craft, IT, Line Dancing, Digital Photography and a Choir. A further proportion will be used to promote the Cookridge and Horsforth U3A in neighbouring areas where there are cur-
rently only a few members. Open meetings will be held in Otley at the Methodist Church on Thursday 22nd September at 10.30am and 29th September at Yeadon Methodist Church also at 10.30am. Further meetings will be held in Rawdon and Guiseley later in the year. The current Chairman, Moira Greensmith, would like to invite anyone wishing to learn more about the U3A and its activities to attend one of these open information meetings. โNo Cold Callingโ Zones Apparently a man has been trying to fundraise for a charity in the area but does not have any kind of authorisation. I took this up with both the Police and West Yorkshire Trading Standards, and asked whether some additional โNo Cold Callingโ Zones could be introduced in the area. The Police advised that they would support this. However, residents need to be canvassed initially to ensure that a majority are in favour of a particular area being designated as a โNo Cold Callingโ Zone. Then additional funding would need to be sought to cover signage, stickers and information leaflets. West Yorkshire Trading Standards advised that these zones can help

The council appears hooked on setting standards and officers have been busily writing reports again. This time round itโs a grand treatise on the needs and opportunities for open space, sport and recreation around the city. The consequence is each of us is entitled to around 0.3 of a square inch of swimming pool within 15 minutes public transport journey time. They donโt actually put it that way of course preferring instead to use the more sophisticated sounding 7.8 sq metres per 1,000 of population, but either way Iโve done the sums for you and clearly goldfish get more.

residents to deal more effectively with cold callers and dissuade doorstep sellers. For details visit www.ts.wyjs. org.uk/wyjs-trading-doorstep-crime. asp#cccz Let me know if you would like to be part of a co-ordinating group and I will do my best to arrange a meeting with the Police and West Yorkshire Trading Standards. Drainage You will have received a letter from Yorkshire Water recently advising you about new regulations regarding sewer ownership. As a result, some residents have contacted me for clarification. At present, whoever owns a drain or sewer is normally responsible for its maintenance. This includes dealing with blockages and small repairs or replacing the drain or sewer if required. Drains are the ownerโs responsibility up to their connection with a private or public sewer.
For indoor tennis players the Leeds standard is 0.08 courts per thousand of population. How exactly a thousand people are expected to play on less than a tenth of a tennis court remains something of a mystery though itโs going to help if they stick to playing doubles. This time the new standard requires courts to be within 20 minutes public transport journey time. Donโt ask why itโs deemed acceptable to take five minutes longer to reach an indoor tennis court than a swimming pool. Bowls enthusiasts strictly require access to a car. Donโt even think about walking as the accessibility standard is a ten minute drive. No mention of public transport here though with an allocation of just under 200 sq ft apiece they do at least fare better than the tennis players. Similar space is al-
However, the Government wants to simplify who is responsible for certain pipework. From 1st October, Yorkshire Water will be taking on responsibility for all private sewers and lateral drains. Property owners will only be responsible for individual drains serving their property. There is a lot of information on the Yorkshire Water website. Yorkshire Water do not have maps for all the sewer systems and there could be some debate over the curtilage boundaries and where their responsibilities start. Sewers that connect to private treatment works or a septic tank, or carry water directly to a water course, will not transfer to Yorkshire Water. Highways drains and road gullies are owned by the Highways Authority unless the street is un-adopted and these are unaffected. located to other users of outdoor facilities including athletes. For their part golfers will surely fancy their chances of achieving a hole in one on a regular basis. We learn too that residents in Adel and Bramhope currently must travel further than a 15 minute walk to access existing allotment sites โ note no cars for them - and Otley isnโt within 20 minutes drive of an athletic track. Many of us knew that already And the point of all this? Well we are told it helps to secure a financial contribution from developers towards recreation facilities. Thatโs the theory at least but donโt count on it. As to the next standard, how about the number of council reports per thousand council tax payers? clive.fox@leeds.gov.uk
We had our meeting with David THE ADEL Wilson Homes ASSOCIATION and their new arDr Barrie Hopson chitects in July regarding the Holt Avenue development. Overall, residents were pleased with the new layout. The number of houses has now been reduced to 44 from the initial 70. Strong feelings were aroused concerning the actual housing designs and DWH and the Leeds City Council planners have agreed to relook at this aspect. The designs are still up to view at the Adel Sports & Social Club and at the Stables. Our next concern is to protect the fields opposite the Church from future development. A small working party is interpreting, with Cllr Andersonโs help, the Coalitionโs ideas on planning and localism and we have been asked by the Council and the Government to contribute our views on these policies. Some of them could, in theory, give us more protection from green field and green belt planning vandalism. Val Crompton has been working hard at revising the Adel Neighbourhood Design Statement and we are working closely with the planners to update this and gain more protection from unbridled planning permissions. Our 15th September meeting will have a rescheduled meeting with Inspector Richard Coldwell to discover the policeโs attitude and commitment to Neighbourhood Watch Schemes. We will also be discussing a new initiative from West Yorkshire Trading Standards designed to stop rogue traders, doorstep crime, and the benefits of having a Cold Calling Control Zone. If you have ideas for a community project we will also be discussing a Natwest scheme offering three community projects the chance to win awards of ยฃ6,000 each We are grateful to our local Councillors who have managed to get us ยฃ1,800 to cover most of the costs of the new heritage lighting in Back Church Lane. Please let me know in advance of local issues that you would like to be discussed (barriehopson@ashlingpartnership.com)

A Message from Horsforth Town Council We hope that you all feel refreshed following your summer activities! And, a big โThank Youโ to everyone who helped with the many Summer activities that occupied the interests of our young people. Several of the Councilโs Committees met over the Summer โ notably Planning and Environment. The Environment Committee next meets at the beginning of September, and will start its discussions and preparations for Christmas and planting in the new year. Cut backs from Leeds City Council mean that the costs and provision of Christmas lights and trees have now to be carefully considered. The Committee are also involved in monitoring the cleaning and maintenance of the many ginnels in Horsforth. If there is a ginnel near you that needs to be recorded, as a part of the network, please let us know. This committee is also looking at its contribution to the Councilโs Five Year plan (or wish list!). Again, if you have any positive suggestions, please contact us. The Environment Committee also works with Horsforth in Bloom to achieve the best and most colourful spectacle for the judges. When the judges visited earlier this year, they were very impressed by the seats and how well they were used. Tom Ferry, the Town Clerk, has successfully completed his Cilca course, which provides the first steps for the Council to be awarded Quality Status. Quality Status would provide the Council with the opportunity to take on larger and different responsibilities and manage more parts of the Townโs services. As Autumn brings in colourful and fruitful days, the Council will continue working for the benefit of Horsforth and our residents.

HEADINGLEY FARMERSโ MARKET CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS!
LAWNSWOOD SCHOOL IS ON THE UP! Deemed to be failing its pupils and placed in special measures in November 2009, the school passed a full inspection recently with flying colours.
On Saturday 10th September, Headingley Farmersโ Market will celebrate its fifth anniversary! Set up as one of the enterprises of Headingley Development Trust (HDT), it is organised by a small group of HDT members.
The market has full FARMA accreditation, which helps to keep standards high. Many members took part in the FARMA market health-check in March. It produced some remarkable findings: over 1,200 people attend the market and the conversion rate (i.e. how many actually shop rather than just browse) is an excellent 80%. Moreover, 85% of shoppers come from within a radius of 2.5 miles, and 66% come from within a mile!
Conveniently falling on Celebrate Headingley weekend, market organisers have planned a supper (market produce of course!) and knees-up at HEART (tickets available from HEART). This follows rigorous monitoring by inspectors each term. Several areas, including leadership, capacity for further improvement and the sixth form were all labeled โgoodโ. Overall, it was judged to be offering a satisfactory standard of education to its students and was taken out of special measures. โStaff and pupils are thrilled with the newsโ, said head teacher Georgie Sale, who took charge of the school as executive head teacher in January this year. โThis has been a huge team effort with both staff and pupils wanting to make this school better. Thereโs a real โcan-doโ culture now which will carry the school into a successful future.โ The inspectorsโ findings show vast improvements in many areas. Previously, pupilsโ behaviour, teaching and leadership had all been heavily criticised. โThe executive head teacher has secured improvement in many key aspects of school life,โ said the inspectorsโ report. โStudentsโ attainment, although low, is improving securely and rapidly. Studentsโ behaviour is now satisfactory, allowing effective learning to take place in lessons.โ Other areas of improvement at Lawnswood, which was one of the first schools to be rebuilt in state-of-the-art facilities as part of a national school rebuilding programme, included use of assessment and tracking of pupilsโ progress, and the overall care, guidance and support
CRAGG HILL AND WOODSIDE GET DESIGNATED CONSERVATION STATUS Following over a year of discussion and public consultation, the Cragg Hill and Woodside areas of Horsforth have finally been designated a conservation area. The decision by Leeds City Council follows two successful public consultations earlier last year. The new conservation area will take in the majority of Outwood Lane, as well as significant historic areas around Cragg Hill and Woodside, which are located at either end of Outwood Lane. A conservation area appraisal and management plan has also been produced to ensure the special interest of the conservation area is documented. This will be the third conservation area in Horsforth. The other two are based around Town Street and the Victorian Villa developments at Newlay. โThis is very good news for Horsforthโ, said Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive board member responsible for development. โAwarding an area conservation status is an important step โ it helps safeguard the special
architectural and historic character of the area and protects important buildings from inappropriate demolition and development. โIโd like to thank everyone who took part in the consultations. The opinions of local people were an important part of this process.โ More information on conservation areas in the city is available at www.leeds.gov.uk/conservation or from: Sustainable Development Unit, Leeds City Council, Leonardo Building, 2 Rossington Street, Leeds, LS2

SPEAK YOUR MIND AT LEEDS VOICE DAY Leeds Voice Dayโs October Workshop is called Speak Your Mind or The Game(s) of Life. This exciting interactive coaching session will run on Saturday 15th October in the Jubilee Room at Leeds Metropolitan Universityโs Headingley Campus. Speak Your Mind is about how to cope when put on the spot -- ways to speed up reactions and speak with greater confidence and fluency. Carefully selected improvisation and theatre games will focus on the interplay of power and status -- the daily transactions that make us all feel belittled or confident -- and how we can influence them. These are crucial, unseen skills that can be applied across the board for business, teaching or social life.

GOING ORGANIC
What do you do if youโd like to be kinder to the environment and encourage wildlife in your garden? We spoke to Richard at Leeds Organic Growers and asked him for some tips. He told us: โBuild a compost heap - grab some old pallets and posts and knock one together! Homemade compost is the most sustainable way to recycle your own kitchen and garden waste. It is an aerobic process and will need turning on a regular basis. Great for getting the kids involved. The compost produced can be used as a mulch, this keeps the soil warmer in winter, retains moisture in the summer, helps reduce weed germination AND provides a regular low level supply of nitrogen.
Go on, give it a try! Make a wildlife area โ let the grass grow long, maybe plant some wildflower seeds, ox eye daisy, corn cockle and wild poppies, packet mixes are available. A log pile is a great help or even a pile of stones. Nettles are good for all wildlife, hover flies and bumble bees love hogweed and teasel โ which is also a favourite of goldfinches. Bramble and thistle are excellent too and wildlife also welcome local native grasses and clover. Go wild! And finally, just add water! Yes, build a wildlife pond, hard work but rewarding. If youโre lucky and the pond is big enough youโll soon have dragonflies โ such beautiful insects to watch and enjoy as they shimmer and sparkle over the water during the summer months.
ing of fruit and vegetables; the improvement of local greenspace for the benefit of biodiversity and local wildlife; partnership working with various local groups including tenantsโ groups and local schools. They are committed to actively promoting, encouraging and demonstrating sustainable living amongst all sections of the community, whilst protecting and wherever possible, enhancing the local environment. They work with a variety of groups providing environmental work opportunities, these have included the long term unemployed, the Leeds Universities, Mind and young offenders. If you are a local tenants association, school, or community group, they would be happy to help you achieve your aims and objectives. They have also recently launched a fully competitive garden service to all local residents and commercial customers. Give Richard a call on 07730 369 663 or email leedsorganicgrowers@ hotmail.co.uk
Donโt forget to add some wetland plants and oxygenators and do keep the water topped during the summer months. In winter leave a small ball on the surface which when removed will leave a hole in the ice. If you donโt want a bigger pond, even a small sunken tub will do.โ Leeds Organic Growers is a small local voluntary organisation committed to the promotion of the organic grow-

September is Organic Month The UKโs biggest celebration of all things organic is taking place throughout the month of September. ............................................... This month brings the autumn shades with the flowering of rudbeckias, chrysants and autumn crocus. Japanese maples come into their own with their colourful foliage and they will tolerate boggy but well drained soil.
Autumn planting of container trees that have outgrown the pot is best done now while the soil is moist and still some heat in it. Make sure that it isnโt too late and before frosts have started, this is a common mistake and youโll be disappointed if they donโt grow.

Start to plant bulbs โ plant spring bulbs on their own or among spring bedders such as wallflowers or forget-menots. Begin the planting of lily bulbs, which give a good show. Try new varieties and pot up bulbs for forcing. Plant out rooted cuttings of pinks and hardy biennials, sowing hardy annuals such as candy tuft, cornflowers, larkspur, pot marigolds and poppies. Cut back old unsightly perennials to the ground, remove growing tips from young pinks and, of course, continue deadheading. Here in the North plant out spring cabbage towards the end of the month, sow broad bean and spring cabbage seeds under cloches, and plant out onion sets, which have been prepared for autumn planting, and garlic. For a spring crop, sow chervil and parsley seeds, the latter in a pot for winter use. Continue to harvest beans, potatoes and carrots. Pick any un-ripened tomatoes and take them indoors to ripen (placing a banana near them helps), make smaller green ones into chutney. Itโs blackberry picking time for jam making โ strawberries, raspberries, red and black currants will already have been made, far better tasting than shop bought! Window boxes will be looking tired, so start to plan what you would like for over the winter, there is so much to choose from. Keep on cleaning ponds. Whilst netting is useful, it can stop wildlife such as birds from coming for a drink or a bath. Leave some seed heads in the garden for the birds to feast on. Blackbirds love mahonia berries and pyracantha, though it is the red berries of this plant that go first. Bullfinches love teasels plus the seed of red hot pokers though these may have gone to the sparrows first. Children will love watching the various birds coming to feed.
REVOLUTIONS MAKES TRACKS FOR CASTLEFORD! The Revolutions Brewing Company has commenced at its new micro-brewery premises in Castleford. The Company was created in the Autumn of 2010 by directors Andrew Helm (from Headingley) and Mark Seaman (from Selby), with original production of their music-themed beers utilising spare capacity at a brewery in Sowerby Bridge. Reflecting the speeds at which vinyl records revolve on a turntable, the beers are brewed to three strengths, 3.3%, 4.5% and, very occasionally, 7.8%.
With the fit-out and installation of brewing equipment in an industrial unit on the outskirts of Castleford now complete, the first brew, Clash London Porter (4.5%) is about to be shipped to customers throughout Yorkshire and further afield.

A smaller and more compact wader is the green sandpiper. Blackish above and whitish below, with a white rump, it resembles an over-sized house martin in flight. Its legs are the same colour as those of the greenshank but shorter, and it is nervous and shy. Both species prefer marshes and edges of pools on migration. Green sandpipers will frequent the smallest pool or ditch and fly up suddenly when flushed. Fairburn Ings is a good place to see these species. They have distinctive calls. That of the greenshank is a clear ringing โtew tew tewโ. By contrast, the call of the green sandpiper is a loud liquid โHueet wit witโ.

Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner
The caterpillar feeds within the leaves causing distinct translucent tunnels on the upper surface which eventually form brown dead patches, giving the tree an autumnal appearance by July and resulting in early leaf fall. Recent evidence indicates that this insect can cause smaller trees to die while the reduced photosynthetic ability may affect growth. Cumulative loss in stored food products may compromise long-term health of mature trees.

OPERA NORTHโS DAS RHEINGOLD AT LEEDS TOWN HALL REVIEWED BY RICHARD WILCOCKS
It was quickly apparent in the darkness of Leeds Town Hall in June that the building provides superior acoustics to those in the nearby Grand Theatre, where the Orchestra of Opera North is used to performing from the murky depths of the pit. Here, during a stunning prelude, it emerges in its full concert glory as the light increases, the centre of attention. A hundred musicians are up there, including six harpists. Watery images play on three huge video screens fixed above, ripples growing into turbulent waves as the chord embellishments multiply. Richard Farnes, Opera Northโs music director, has planned to lead the company through its first Ring Cycle over the next four years, and the Grand has been ruled out as not grand enough, because this is Wagner, whose demands for a total experience of his works can seldom be met, not least because they involve the sort of massive expenditure which could only be endured by a mad monarch or the New York Met.
of opportunities for action. There is no stand-and-deliver style here. Take Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke as Loge, for example, who conveys shiftiness with every move, flickering hand movements and cunningfilled face contributing to one of the most memorable performances of the evening. His well-enunciated delivery stands out in a cast wellcoached in diction.
LUCY DEBUTS AT LEEDS CITY VARIETIES Lucy Watmough, the talented young soprano from Otley, will be making her debut appearance at the famous Leeds City Varieties on 7th and 8th October. I WAS ENTHRALLED THROUGHOUT THE TWO AND A HALF HOURS OF THIS RELATIVELY SHORT โPRELIMINARY EVENINGโ, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO INTERVAL. The techno-wizard of this magnificent Rheingold is Peter Mumford, the lighting designer responsible for the concert staging: his projection material provides an excellent modern cyclorama, with green leaves, bubbling lava, flickering tongues of fire and mountain mists appearing just when they are needed. The thin strip in front of the orchestra provides a surprising number
ily with an Edwardian feel to it. They are reminiscent of the privileged classes to be found in stories by Saki, in black dresses or tails. Michael Drueittโs statuesque Wotan gazes out like a veteran general, his good eye searching for the main chance. Das Rheingold returns to Leeds Town Hall on Thursday 8th September for just one performance โ catch it if you can.
โI am really looking forward to the show because it is something quite different from my usual type of performanceโ, said Lucy. โIโm told that at the end of each show, it is traditional that everyone joins in and sings a song about a pub called the โOld Bull and Bushโ. Strange really, because I have asked around and no-one seems to know where it is! I am one of six acts in the show and Iโm sure its going to be a real fun weekend for everyone.โ For further information, visit www.cityvarieties.co.uk

RICHARD TAYLOR, COMPOSER INTERVIEWED BY BRENDAN CAMPBELL
If youโre a regular theatre-goer, youโre likely to be familiar with Richard Taylorโs work even if you donโt know it. Richard has written the music for over sixty plays, many of which have been staged at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Richard considers the WYP his musi- tion seem like less of a risk and he cal home and most recently he has has extensive experience working composed the music for the adapta- on projects for younger performers โ tion of The Go Between (9th Sept โ among other projects, he composed 1st Oct). When I spoke to him he was the original stage musical adaptation about to begin work on King Lear of Whistle Down the Wind for the Na(starring Tim Pigott-Smith, 23rd Sept tional Youth Music Theatre. โ 22nd Oct), which is a very different kind of project. Richard attended school in Scarborough where he developed a love of musicals, participating in productions of Joseph and the like. Through an immersion in musical theatre, Richard carved out his particular creative niche. What drives him, he says, is trying to find what music and lyrics can add to a story, the sense of a dramatic narrative is central to his musical compositions. L.P. Hartleyโs romantic novel, The Go Between was made into a classic film starring Julie Christie and Alan Bates but has only been staged once before. Richard feels that, since the success of Billy Elliot, theatrical productions with children at the centre of the ac28 September 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk

In his field, Richard says, there are as many words for โMusicalโ as the Eskimos have for snow and with The Go Between, heโs attempting a different approach to the genre. Through an intertwining of spoken dialogue and singing, Richard hopes that the audience will emerge from the performance unable to distinguish between what was said and what was sung. โYou donโt write a musical, you rewrite itโ, Richard says. With a play like King Lear, however, a different type of process is required. Itโs more a matter of underscoring the play, he tells me, and the musical accompaniment for Lear will develop as the cast and crew work through rehearsals, with him responding to the actorโs performances. While Richard has dabbled in TV work, notably the Leeds based TV film, Brides in the Bath, he says he has no strong desire to apply his talents to working on film scores. What he loves about theatre, he says, is the spirit of collaboration and he feels comfortable and confidant working with his long standing colleagues at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

THE 4TH SKIPTON INTERNATIONAL PUPPET FESTIVAL 23rd โ 25th September
Skipton is set to come alive at the end of September with a weekend celebrating the art of puppetry. Puppetry has been around for hundreds - perhaps thousands - of years and the technology used to create its effects are constantly being reinvented.
DINSDALES โ THE ONLY ART SUPPLY SHOP IN NORTH LEEDS With the demise of Jowett & Sowery and Gadsbys, Dinsdales Art Supplies & Stationery on Chapel Place in Headingley is now the only art supply shop in North Leeds. Established over 125 years ago, Dinsdales was forced out of the city centre 10 years ago by escalating rents and the dominance of large corporate chain stores. From its Headingley base Dinsdales, now owned and run by Graeme Lindsay-Jones, has built on a formidable reputation amongst the artistic community of Leeds. Graeme is enormously proud to be successfully operating Leeds only remaining independent art materials store. Whether you are looking for quality oil paints, acrylics, watercolours, gouache (in box sets, single paints or money saving sizes), brushes, easels, canvases, canvas panels, watercolour paper (from the likes of Arches, Fabriano, Saunders and Bockingford), graphic markers, sketching supplies or just some art board or papers - Dinsdales has it all. And, Dinsdales is more than just an art shop. For many years Graeme has incorporated office supplies and stationery, a copy shop (including laminating and document binding) and a quiet internet cafe section.
Skipton is showcasing a whole range of shows that mix the traditional with the modern including, a quartet of Grimmโs stories told with poetically pure object theatre; a beautifully carved travellersโ folktale from the memory of the late Scottish storyteller Duncan Williamson; and of course good old (350 years old) Mr Punch, who always has something to say on contemporary life. This cosy festival fits Skipton perfectly and is a celebration of the small, the original and the friendly. All performances are in intimate spaces from marquees seating 60, to studio theatre style halls for 100. The smallest performance is for one person at a time โ plus curious onlookers! This three-day event offers a variety of performances suitable for all ages by companies from all over Europe and the UK. Performances, demonstrations, workshops, special guests โ itโs all happening! Tickets range from ยฃ2.50 - $5 for family shows and ยฃ10 for adult shows with many free acts to create a full festival experience. For further information, visit www.skiptonpuppetfestival. co.uk
Whether you are a seasoned professional artist destined to be the next Ashley Jackson or David Hockney, or an absolute beginner who just fancies trying your hand at keeping a sketch journal โ Dinsdales is proud to help, and itโs right here on your doorstep โ still going strong after all these years. While, for sports fans, Headingley cricket ground is likely to be considered the areaโs most internationally renowned landmark, for the more musically inclined among us the Brudenell Social Club has established itself as a prestigious rival for the title. Manager, Nathan Clark, whose family has been running the club for over thirty years, says that when the area around the Brudenell began to change in the mid to late 90s with the influx of more and more students, the Clarks realised they had to adapt or disappear. Getting the students on side with cheap booze and eclectic live acts nearly every night of the week has helped the Brudenell to thrive where other similar venues have failed and been forced to close their doors.

Leeds and the surrounding areas have no shortage of local talent, and Headingley now has many venues where they can be seen and heard. Perhaps the most well established venue in the area is the Brudenell Social Club. The Brude (as itโs affectionately known by some regulars) first opened its doors as a private members club in 1913 and its impressive longevity over the years has seen it evolve into one of the best loved live music venues in the country, adored
Nathan is proud of what he and his family has achieved with the club, which is essentially a non-profit organization. For over ten years, Nathan has been responding to the needs of bands wishing to play Leedsโ hippest venue. By being able to accommodate any size band, providing good facilities, a reliable PA system with professional sound engineers and taking good care of artists and their crews, the Brudenell has built a solid reputa-

tion as the place to play in Leeds. Just as important as the clubโs operation as a venue is its connection to the local community. The Brudenell continues to be heavily involved in community-based projects such as Unity Day and the Royal Park School Fund. It regularly hosts fundraising events and offers free room hire to school groups. Nathan is also proud of connections to the wider Leeds community and enjoys strong ties to the cityโs independent music shops (Crash and Jumbo) and local record labels. Due to its now prestigious standing in the musical community, the club has drawn some big, nay huge, names to play their stage, hosting secret gigs by the likes of Franz Ferdinand and local boys done good, Kaiser Chiefs. The ensured ticket sales from bands of this ilk give Nathan the freedom to provide a platform for less mainstream, more experimental acts. For instance, the frankly demented Can front man, Damo Suzuki, is becoming something of a regular at the club. Itโs not all about the music, though. The Brudenell has also hosted jumble sales, record fairs and the popular Cabaret Heaven. If Nathan and his mum keep up their good work, the continued success of the club is assured. Skip to the music listings in this here mag and youโre bound to find an upcoming event at Brudenell Social thatโs likely to tickle your fancy. Perhaps weโll see you there. Hats off to Nathan Clark! Long may you run. by Brendan Campbell

โCLASSICS AT THE COTTAGEโ
COTTAGE ROAD CINEMA GEARS UP FOR ITS CENTENARY It is just six years since Cottage Road Cinema was saved from closure. Associated Tower Cinemas were due to close the cinema on the 28th July 2005, but at the eleventh hour an agreement was made with Charles Morris, who also has cinemas in Skipton, Keighley, Elland and the Lake District, to lease the cinema. โIt really was a last-minute thingโ, said Charles; โthe early editions of the evening paper reported that the cinema was closing, and they had to make a quick amendment for the later editions to confirm that it had been saved.โ Since then the cinema has continued to thrive. A notable feature has been the โClassics at the Cottageโ, onenight presentations of favourite films going back several decades in some cases, which was the brainchild of the Far Headingley Village Society.

The cinema is currently gearing up for its centenary, which will be in July 2012. โThere are very few cinemas which survive from pre-World War One, and even fewer which have been in continuous use as a cinema for all that time, but Cottage Road is one of themโ, said Charles. โThe cinema is not actually purpose-built. It began life as livery stables, then became a garage. It was converted to a cinema in 1912. โWe will be celebrating the centenary in style, though we havenโt quite decided what format it should take. One idea is that we might have a week with different films each day, representing each decade of the cinemaโs life. We also want to present a historical display and would like to appeal to readers for any memorabilia - photographs, old programmes etc. - and memories which they have of the cinema.โ Please drop these in to the cinema, or post them to Cottage Road Cinema, Corrage Road, Headingley LS6 4DD. For screening times etc. visit www.cottageroad. co.uk or call 0113 275 1606.

How Dawn edited her dream and turned it into reality Dawn Featherโs Yorkshire Edit video business finally got the green light after a big helping hand from The Princeโs Trust Dawn struggled at school but was thrilled when she managed to get a place at Sheffield Hallam University studying media. The course went well, but after she graduated in 2005, things started to go downhill. Dawn had dreamed of working as a film editor since the age of twelve, but no matter how hard she tried, she just couldnโt get her first break.
The Princeโs Trust enter the frame In 2006, after finding herself out of work for a year, she was struggling to pay the bills and desperately wanted to find a good job. It was then that her mum suggested she contact The Princeโs Trust. She and her mum sat down and wrote an email and hoped for the best. The Trust got back to her within two days and said theyโd support anyone who is long-term unemployed and in need of a confidence boost and skills. Dawn met with one of The Trustโs business managers and after preparing a business plan they agreed on ยฃ1,000 grant and a ยฃ1,700 loan (which has now been repaid). The money meant she could buy better equipment and set up her own freelance video editing company, Yorkshire Edit- in 2006.
Invaluable business mentoring It wasnโt easy and Dawn says the first year was pretty challenging. She had to work as a waitress to keep the money coming in and she doesnโt think she would have coped without her business mentor from The Princeโs Trust. She said: โHe helped me build my confidence and showed me how to deal with things like invoices and contracts.โ She says working with The Trust has had a massive impact on her confidence which is now sky high. She added: โI believe I can do anything now, Iโve met lots of interesting people and itโs opened so many doors.
InspirEd to teach film making Dawn is now doing brilliantly as a freelance film editor with a number of contracts with big companies. She also teaches film making to children and young adults in schools across the country with a new brand called InspirEd, set up in 2008, and she employs six people on a freelance basis. Sheโs even worked with Boyzone making behind-the-scenes documentaries on their comeback tour. She has also worked for Dragonโs Den star and Princeโs Trust supporter, James Caan, working
Dawn accepting her Federation of Small Business Enterprise Award at โCelebrate Success 2008โ
on videos for his website and premises. Dawn also acted as a Young Ambassador for The Trust. She said: โEvery young person has the ability to succeed. A lot of young people have so much potential and with a bit of support can achieve their dreams.โ
High praise from Dragonโs Den star โI met Dawn at a Princes Trust event when she talked me through her business venture, for which she had been granted a loan from the trust in 2006. I was so impressed by her and the challenges she had overcome to become a successful young budding entrepreneur that I decided to let her commission some editing work for me. I wasnโt disappointed. Not only is she extremely professional, she has an eye for detail and she instinctively knows how to get the best out of a project. Her work is reasonably priced for the market but essentially she often looks for ways to provide added value. That was nearly two years ago and Dawn has continued to produce high quality work for me almost on a weekly basis. I have no doubt that she has the determination to make her business a huge success and I would have no hesitation in recommending her to other clients. โ James Caan, CEO Hamilton Bradshaw and Dragonโs Den panelist

OTLEY FOLK FESTIVAL This is the 20th year for Otley Folk Festival, which runs this year from 15th โ 18th September. It kicks off on Thursday evening with a concert at Korks Wine Bar on Bondgate (home of Otley Folk Club). Once again thereโs a great line-up, including Chumbawamba, Urban Folk Quartet, Bob Fox, Rosie Doonan & The Snapdragons, Grace Notes, Gilmore-Roberts, John Kirkpatrick, Duncan McFarlane Band, Bayou Gumbo, Johnny-Jump-Up, My Sweet Patootie and Blackbeardโs Tea Party Ceilidh Band.
THE GREATEST SHOW ON TOAST
Biscuithead and the Biscuit Badgers With their surreal, catchy and uplifting songs, outrageous stage presence and improbable merchandise (items include the possibly unique 3D cinematic band flickbook kit), Biscuithead & the Biscuit Badgers are rapidly becoming the band everyone has to see. Their video and single-with-accompanying-sheet-music The Seaweed Under the Sofa has acquired something of a cult following, theyโve been introduced by Tom Robinson on BBC6 Music and summer dates included the Croissant Neuf Summer Party and Solfest.
Chumbawamba
Other venues this year are The Methodist Hall, The Courthouse, Otley Rugby Club and Cricket Club, and lots of pub sessions. Thereโs something for everyone โ thereโs a great weekend in store for all!. ANOTHER FUNDRAISER FOR WOMENโS AID Despite having ended his โCool Acousticโ nights some seven months ago, Richard Steel, is back with the first of a group of three annual music fundraiser nights. โLeeds Womenโs Aid #4โ is a seven act event at Royal Park Cellars, Hyde Park, on Sat. 24th September, 7 โ 11pm, featuring Matt Belmont Band, Anais, The Coopers, Sian Alexandra, Alice Ostapjuk, Steph Stephenson, and Lisa Marie Glover. Funds will go to the national charity Womenโs Aid, which helps victims of domestic violence and other forms of abuse (www. womensaid.org.uk ) Entry ยฃ3.50. Donations, however modest, welcome! 36 September 2011 | northleedslife.co.uk
This second offering from the โmoustache-powered tuba cabaret marvelsโ is an eclectic mix from the downright weird to the charmingly domestic. The opening, Beige, is a ragtime homage to the many aspects of a much neglected shade (โitโs the colour of cardigans and coffee creams, Terry Woganโs dreams and linoโ), The Meat in the Sandwich manages to be simultaneously poignant and quite shocking, the single from the album (with an excellent video by Paul Morricone youtu.be/zC4PFpSDG7g), The Seaweed Under the Sofa sings of love lost over the remains of a Chinese takeaway and Harrison Richards is a celebration of a local mind reader โ shades of The Beatlesโ Dr Robert. โItโs as much art project as popular beat comboโ, says tuba player Sam, โwith each of us having free rein to follow our obsessions. Deanโs (lead vocals and ukulele) drawings and collages add a surreal and personal quality to our CD artwork, Bob (piano) revises for his bio-chemistry exams in The Amino Acids Song, Matt (drums) wears a wonderful array of enormous homemade hats and Iโm constantly concocting new items for our merchandise suitcase.โ The Greatest Show on Toast hits the virtual shops on September 19th with a pre-launch party at the Brudenell Social Club, Leeds on 17th September.
BACK TO SCHOOL BLUES

THE BLIND DEAD MCJONES BAND
Anyone who knows anything about Blind Dead McJones knows that despite his amazing history and musical ability he is a hard man to get hold off. Nobody knows this better than his band, who for the past three years have performed gigs around Leeds with and without him (mainly without). They have tried on to enter the studio with him to work on some new material but again have been let down, They have eventually got tired of wasting studio time and recorded without him! The result is Back to School Blues, recorded at Touchwood studios in Hyde Park. Guitarist Ben Buddy Slack stepped up for lead vocals in the absence of McJones and they have recorded a couple of the great manโs own classics as well as a few they wrote themselves, including Hang on There Boys โ a song made up of excuses McJones has given them in the past for missing various events! The band, obviously nervous about recording without their front man, called in some help which came in the form of Blind Dead McMoose who helps out with the vocals on Tired and Benโs old guitar teacher Al Bampton, who joins the band for an extended Blues jam on the title track. Blind Dead McJones himself has listened to the EP and has been quoted as saying โBoys done goodโ. The CD is available from iTunes, Spotify and all major download sites.

YARNBURYโS KIDS GO FISHING Yarnbury Angling Club staged their under 16 junior open match at Weeton Lake Fisheries on 30th July. Ryhs Dowling (11) from Horsforth fished maggot up in the water on a nine metre pole to net an outstanding 30lb mixed bag and take the honours, followed closely by Matthew Lakey (5) with 26lb 8oz fishing similar tactics. Third place was won by Samuel Marshall with 26lb 4oz fishing maggot on the whip, and Samโs brother William (13) caught 20lb on the waggler fishing maggot at full depth for fourth place.
The competition, now in its fourth year, was a huge success. Secretary and event organiser Adrian Addy would like to thank lake owner Gary Parr and match sponsor Clearwater Revival Ltd. And tackle donations were received from BobcoLeeds, Mutleys in Horsforth, Otley Country Sports, Leeds Angling Centre, JT Rodgers and Mr M. Kenworthy.
SUCCESSFUL ART EXHIBITION AT HORSFORTH SCHOOL Horsforth Schoolโs exhibition of Art and Photography AS and A2 work was an outstanding success. Both were extremely complimentary about the studentsโ work.

enโs Corn r d l i Ch Nurseries er We currently have places available for children aged 3 months to 5 years at our small friendly private nursery on the beautiful woodland site of Moorlands School, conveniently located off the Ring Road at Weetwood.
Free 15 hours per week for children aged 3 plus
We also offer wrap around care for pre prep pupils at Moorlands school.
Childrenโs Corner Nurseries have several high quality nurseries across Leeds with two located in North Leeds, one on the site of Moorlands school, and one in the centre of Headingley. All are private nurseries, some on the school sites and all offer nursery care and pre-school education by experienced qualified staff for children aged between 3 months and in some cases up to 11 years. We work on smaller than required staff ratios to ensure individual attention and baby sign is used in all nurseries. A full programme is planned by our qualified teachers and staff and we offer 15 hours per week free pre-school education for children aged 3+ during term time. But most of all we provide a safe and fun place to be. Donโt take it from us โ hereโs what some of our parents at Moorlands and Headingley have to say: โGโs progress has without doubt been accelerated by the wonderful work done by Fran and her team. Her cognitive skills have improved through a structured programme and above all love, laughter, care and devotion. โ โWe have been so happy with the care M has received since starting nursery. It is obvious M loves her time with you all and she is always excited when we arrive. Thank you so much for the excellent work you do, it gives us piece of mind to know she is in safe hands.โ

Julie is one of ten community nurses at the hospice who care for people with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Her team works in the community, providing expert palliative care, advice and support to patients in their own homes. โI love my jobโ, said Julie. โOur aim is to improve the patientโs quality of life, whilst allowing them to remain as independent as possible.โ The Leeds Midnight Walk is one of the biggest fundraisers for the hospice, which needs to raise over ยฃ1.5million each year. This yearโs Walk hopes to raise over ยฃ30,000 which could fund a nurse in the community for about six months. Entry for the Leeds Midnight Walk is ยฃ15 and all participants must pre-register at www.sueryder.org/midnightwalk or contact 0113 203 3338 to take part. THRILLING TRIATHLON WIN FROM BROWNLEE BROTHERS I donโt know if you were watching the London Triathlon on 7th August, but it was a thrilling affair โ especially as you had to have been cheering on local Bramhope boys Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee. What a race! Alistair (23), who was already having a brilliant 2011 season, stepped it up another level and used a gutsy bike breakaway to claim his 10th Dextro Energy Triathlon Series win in the 2012 Olympic Games preview. He did this in 1 hour, 50 minutes and 9 seconds, beating silver medallist Alexander Brukhankov (Russia) by 25 seconds. Then, brother Jonathan (19) put in the dayโs fastest run split to claim bronze. Having watched Jonathan back in the pack of cyclists as Alistair broke away with Brukhankov, James Elvery (New Zealand), and Ivan Rana (Spain), the thought did cross my mind that heโd never be able to make the podium โ how wrong was I! Off his bike Alistair hammered out a 10km run of 29 minutes, 50 seconds that included high-fiving fans lining the home straight and a walk over the finish line. โIt was great, I couldnโt have asked for moreโ, he said. โI couldnโt quite believe it to be honest. I knew that we were in danger of being attacked on the bike and I think me getting away served its purpose better than anything.โ
Photo: British Triathlon
Javier Gomez and Jonathan Brownlee pulled away on the third lap of the run. It didnโt take long for Jonathan to drop Gomez and run onto his third Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series podium this year. โI took off on the run and itโs me and Javierโ, said Jonathan. โWe were attacking each other constantly and after the third lap I was knackered! I could quite happily have finished then, and then the gap went on for five seconds and I thought, come on come on Javier, please, please give up
ST. GEMMAโS APPEALS FOR GREAT NORTH RUNNERS St. Gemmaโs Hospice is looking for people who have a place in this yearโs Great North Run and would like to support a local charity. Last year, the St. Gemmaโs team of runners raised over ยฃ43,000! It would be great if they could top that figure this year! If you have your own place in the race, there would be no set minimum for

your sponsorship โ every little counts! St. Gemmaโs will have a tent in the charity village to provide sports massages, hot & cold drinks and snacks after the race.
โWe were so thrilled with the amount our runners raised last yearโ, said Hayley Avron from St Gemmaโs. โWeโre looking forward to greeting our runners at the finish line once more โ their efforts are greatly appreciated.โ
just let me have this one. I didnโt know I had got it until a couple of minutes to go and I thought, itโs over, but it was a real hard race. I gave it everything.โ Of course this outcome means that both brothers have qualified for the Olympics. Fantastic!
St Gemmaโs Hospice, based in Moortown, provides specialist medical and nursing care for people with life threatening illnesses, and support for their families. The care provided is free of charge so St Gemmaโs relies on donations and local fundraising initiatives. For a fundraising pack contact Hayley on 0113 218 5570 or hayleya@stgemma.co.uk
