The Yachtsman’s Commencement By Kevin Merrigan, CEO Northrop & Johnson Though most of us will never be invited to weave sentimental musings into a tapestry of advice for an ambitious group of cap-and-gown graduates, there is something gratifying in writing a commencement speech just for the heck of it. Mary Schmich, a journalist for the Chicago Tribune, did this spectacularly in 1997 when she penned a column titled, Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young. So as I sit at my desk staring down a blinking curser, I reminisce about the 70 years Northrop & Johnson has been in business and the 31 fabulous years it has been a part of my life. Through my nostalgia, I recognize that I have quite a bit of advice I can proffer to you, dear reader. So without further ado, I give you the yachtsman’s commencement. Readers of Northrop & Johnson’s Navigator… Drink rosé. If I could offer you one single metaphor for the unique pleasures of yachting, rosé would be it. I, too, can recall a time when it was easy to mock pink wine, but when you are in the South of France on a glorious summer day and see glass after glass of rosé being enjoyed all around you, take the plunge. You may never care to order rosé again, and that’s okay because it will never taste quite the same again. But you should always embrace the local color and the adventure of stepping out of your comfort zone. This is why you set sail in the first place, and this is what you need to know: Buy the boat you really want and don’t worry about the money. Oh, never mind, of course you will worry about the money. But within reason, money should be the last factor governing the yacht you choose. Once you have narrowed down a price range, let the features of the yacht dictate your final choice, not where it falls on the money spectrum. Oftentimes that little bit of extra money will pay huge dividends in your ability to enjoy your boat. In a year’s time, if you have all the features you wanted on your yacht, you will not regret spending the money. The opposite is also true: if you give up must-have features for a bargain, you’ll wish you hadn’t. Hire the right people for the right reasons. From your broker to your captain and crew, to your yacht manager or project manager and everything in between, this is a service industry. Top-tier service is not cheap and cheap service is seldom top tier. Perhaps in no other industry is the expression “time is money” more applicable. Having the right team in place with people who know exactly what needs to be done will save time and money and will reduce stress and aggravation.
Do one thing every trip that exhilarates you. Only invite the people whose company you enjoy on board. (This is also true about your crew.) Swim, dive, explore, dance. Dance barefoot on your top deck in a crowded anchorage. Put a karaoke machine on your yacht. Ask your stewardess to change the 10 on the volume dial to an 11. Drink festive cocktails. Sing. You are not as musically challenged as you imagine. Dream. At sea, like life on land, there will be both obstacles and opportunities. Commemorate the great sea days. Forget the times you get seasick. Keep a journal and a guest book. Collect small bottles of sand and put a one-sentence memory in the bottle. Leave your schedules and stresses at the office, and do not wear work clothes to the boat. Stay flexible. A lack of flexibility is scientifically proven to cause problems. (I know that fact is true, because I made it up myself.) Repairs, like the weather, can be unpredictable. Stuff is going to happen, don’t let it ruin your day. Breathe. Jealousy is a waste of energy. Sometimes you’re the biggest yacht in the anchorage; sometimes you’re the smallest. What really matters is who is the happiest. And that is a comparison you should only make against yourself. Don’t feel guilty about spending time on your yacht. This is the reason you have worked as hard as you have. Use your boat and you will live a happier life. But, recognize that you can’t experience most cultures or destinations in one day. Slow down. Over time, trends will change, your needs will change, your plans will change. The day will someday come when you want to sell your boat. Stay committed to your yacht through the sale. Know that a skeleton crew and obscure dockage will affect marketability of your yacht, as will overpricing it. If you are serious about selling your yacht, price it fairly and treat it like a thoroughbred in a show barn, not an absurdly priced swayback put out to pasture. Presentation, price and placement are the three pillars of effective marketing. That “free” dockage in a random or remote spot will almost certainly be the most expensive dockage you ever had if you really want your boat to sell.
You should always remember that the whole, entire, complete, ultimate, empirical reason to own a yacht is to bring you pleasure. Wherever the joy may come from – the beauty of your surroundings, the engineering of an impeccable boat, the congeniality of a great crew, the exhilaration of an adventure, the ability to travel the world and unpack only once – your Let the captain do his or her job. You should not have to micromanage yacht will create a lifetime of memories meant to be shared with family your boat. If your boat is fraught with drama, you probably don’t and friends. And so, dear readers, as we stand together over this sea of the have the right captain. A great captain can make an average yacht feel spectacular, and a bad captain can make a spectacular yacht feel average. soundest advice I can muster, I imagine some of my wisdom you’ll take to heart, some of it you may discard. And that is your prerogative, as the kids An owner, a yacht, and the captain are three integral puzzle pieces that like to say, “this is your jam.” Just trust me on the rosé. need to fit together tightly. Mother nature is going to do what she’s going to do. Don’t fight the weather. The forecast is what it is. Know that negotiating over the weather is as reasonable as trying to stop a flood with a rake. Chances are your crew will have great ideas to compensate for a crummy forecast. If not, improvise. But always keep safety first.

Why do you think that exploration yachting has seen an increase in demand in recent years? B There is overall a trend toward experiences versus objects – the idea that an incredible wildlife encounter shared with your family is worth more than any object you can purchase. In a world where we are bombarded with a constant demand for our attention, there is something restorative about returning to a more natural environment – it is a reset of sorts for our clients. J At this level of the market, clients are always looking for the rare and the remote. They want to explore destinations that no one else has been to, and see wildlife, people and environments that are hard to access. We are responding to this and putting together creative, innovative and safe experiences in these out-of-the-way regions that leave a light footprint, but long memories. N There is a shift taking place in yachting: people are now fully aware that a yacht really is the best possible way to explore the remote parts of the world. Exploring doesn’t need to be uncomfortable. It’s genuine exploration, but with a level of comfort on the same par as the Mediterranean or the Caribbean.
Why now? What has spiked the interest from clients to venture farther afield than the gold triangle of the Caribbean, Côte d’Azur and Amalfi Coast? B One reason is simply that there is more hardware available now to enjoy these experiences farther afield. A few adventurous owners have sent their yachts to more remote locations, which creates new opportunities for charter and raises awareness of a destination that many wouldn’t have considered before. And, word of mouth is playing a significant role, as is climate change – people want to gain a better understanding and see firsthand what is happening in the poles. J The improvement in digital communication means clients are now able to spend longer on board and use their yachts as a platform to explore. Demand for more remote regions is building with a younger generation of clients who are challenging the norm. They dont want to settle settle with the same format, cruising the same crowded areas year-in-year-out.
Do you believe that shipyards and brokers have created the demand or have they simply reacted to clients’ demands? J We feel that they are reacting to the clients’ demands, particularly yacht owners, who are looking for a return on experience from their yacht. The clients are challenging the yachting industry and this comes from radical new designs like EXCELLENCE VI or explorer vessels like ANDROMEDA and REV. Brokers are partnering with companies like ours to offer more to their clients and show

that they work with the best people in the industry who fully understand how to deliver amazing experiences. Why do you believe a luxury yacht is the best means to explore the world? B A yacht simply delivers what a client wants in a way that no other vessel can. It allows for a completely custom experience. You can operate according to your own timetable, completely separate from any other infrastructure or support. And, that yacht is mobile, of course, so you can take this incredible platform anywhere in the world.
capabilities of the yacht will ultimately determine what you can do on the expedition and what kind of experience you can have. Last summer, I was in Antarctica onboard an iceclassed yacht. We spent 48 hours deep in the ice, faraway from any other ship and it was just magical. A conventional yacht would not have been able to deliver the same level of experience. J Ideally the yacht would have assets for exploration onboard, but this is definitely not a barrier to entry. One of things that we do best is combine clever planning and logistics to ensure that we can take clients as remote as possible. This can mean anything from renting helicopters or low-draft skiffs (where possible) or traveling with an ice-breaker to visit the polar regions.
Do you believe you need a specifically built or adapted yacht to explore remote locations? B We work with a variety of yachts of different capabilities. We have taken many conventional yachts to remote regions N An expedition yacht is a versatile vessel that has the ability to cruise self-sufficiently for long periods of time. of the world – it isn’t necessarily that you need a custom Designed and built with power, stability and efficiency designed yacht to go on an expedition. However, the

foremost in mind, with the addition of a displacement hull, they are the safest charter yachts available for long-range cruising. To the adventurous client, what value do you add? B Experience and safety. Access is a big advantage of our network and having the knowledge to be able to execute a plan B flawlessly at a moment’s notice. Our strong shoreside team means we have the infrastructure to support an expedition from inception to execution. We also place a premium on responsible operations. Clients can be assured we will follow the highest standards in every operation and we never lose sight that our primary mission is to deliver a safe, well-run expedition, every time. We can help bring the destination alive to the client while removing a significant portion of the risk and worry that goes with operating in a remote environment. J
We bring clever planning and a network of contacts
from all corners of the globe – often from outside the travel industry – who have a wealth of knowledge and insight, be that in conservation, marine biology, anthropology or wildlife spotting. We also work closely with their captains and have a great master mariner and ice pilots who seamlessly support them in delivering a smooth service to our clients. We use a military planning tool to create every one of our trips, so that every “T” is crossed, and “I”dotted. We are rigorous about risk assessment and can build in security and contingency for every eventuality. N At Northrop & Johnson we work closely with expedition agencies like EYOS and Pelorus in order to design these experiential cruising routes, in collaboration with the captains in our fleet, whose knowledge of their own yacht is also vital to the creative process. Experts in their field, they are our eyes on the ground and help to ensure an absolutely seamless service for each and every client, keeping all logistical issues away from the guests.

Which remote areas are becoming more popular? J We see endless possibilities for adventure in The Kimberley, Raja Ampat and Papua New Guinea, as well as closer to home, in Norway, Scotland and the Baltics. Patagonia and South America have much to offer as well. N There are an array of remote cruising grounds to explore, from the South Pacific to Costa Rica, Alaska to Antarctica, but two areas that seem to have increased in popularity in the past 12 to 24 months are Arctic Svalbard and Greenland and French Polynesia.

We also have quietly arranged opportunities for scientists or conservation organizations to have use of our clients’ yachts, and we have supported several media and scientific expeditions, including the extraordinary Five Deeps Expedition, where we were literally learning something new about the ocean on each dive. Of course, we encourage carbon offset for all our expeditions, and have worked with clients to arrange donations and support to local organizations that support conservation. We also just recently assisted with the organization of an Ocean Plastics Summit, which gathered at sea over 160 stakeholders over a four-day period to advance solutions.

And finally, which is your favorite yacht? B My favorite yacht has to be the SeaXplorer. I am a bit biased, of course, in that EYOS was a design partner with Damen shipyards in designing the SeaXplorer range. We contributed over 150 design criteria and spent months working with the shipyard’s team to deliver the most capable and robust luxury yacht available. ANDROMEDA is amazing as she challenges the conventional – from her design to being built in a commercial yard – she is taken all over the world and is true to her explorer spirit. J

Superyachts are works of art in their own right, but the perfect piece of artwork can be the ideal finishing touch for a superyacht interior. Paintings and photography have long been a popular addition to yachts – with everything from Picassos to art by the owner themselves displayed on board – but increasingly sculptures are also being used as a striking addition or stylish centerpiece. And there’s no surprise why. “Sculptures give a sense of personal touch and uniqueness to any yacht, like a personal note to the owner,” says Veronika Schmid, Director of Gill Schmid Design, which delivers yacht design, architecture and art services. “Sculptures also add a new dimensionality to space: colors, movements, ideas and artistic expressions. They draw our eye towards them and highlight the space and environment they are in, taking us on a journey of our thoughts, ideas and emotions. And lastly, and on a more pragmatic level, they present themselves as an obvious financial asset, adding to the uniqueness of the yacht and hence making it more attractive for sale or charter.”
02
01 Bespoke sculptures, such as the featured Split Star, are created by Gill Schmid Design for the artist Frank Stella 02 Bespoke “Kupe” mask, inspired by a famed Māori navigator and created by Jimmy James Kouratoras in tribute to Tangaroa, Māori God of the ocean and master of the seas
DKT Artworks, a multidisciplinary team of artists that delivers bespoke projects, have seen a notable rise in request for sculptures tailored for superyachts, with recent commissions including a bespoke piece for the 244ft (74.5m) motor yacht ELANDESS. “There’s no doubt that sculptures can contribute significantly to the ambience of a yacht, even epitomizing the theme of the vessel,” says Guglielmo Carrozzo, Head of Marketing at DKT Artworks. “Their visibility is especially significant with the new generation of yachts which tend to have a much greater area of glass, which means they can be seen from inside and out.” Creating pieces that have a link with the sea and yachts is an appealing challenge for New Zealand-based artist Jimmy James Kouratoras, who recently delivered a piece called “Kupe”, named after an ancient Māori navigator and created in tribute to Tangaroa, Māori God of the ocean and master of the seas. “Creating a work that will travel on a superyacht gives energy, ‘mana’ (prestige) and direction for the vessel itself and those on board,” explains Jimmy. “I shaped this sculpture to continue its own voyage and be guardian of its chosen vessel. Sculptures on superyachts provide a special – and essential – finishing touch. Not only does a sculpture create curiosity, it welcomes touch. This in return gives us a sense of ease and happiness. It also helps us to connect – all essential parts of bringing together a unique experience on board a superyacht.”

03 DKT Artworks create bespoke sculptures for yachts, including the featured circular piece that contributes significantly to the ambience of the interior space
With sculptures often being a distinctive aspect of a yacht’s décor, developing the sculpture’s look and feel usually begins early on. “Before we take out the chisels or modeling tools, we need to build a clear brief,” says Guglielmo. “There’s almost always a given subject and a preferred material as a starting point and from here, the aesthetic aspect of the proposed artwork progresses from hand-drawn designs and a few material samples through scale models to the final sculpture.” The final position and use is always key to the development stages. “All of this development would normally take into consideration the major aspects from which the artwork would normally be viewed, the general theme on board the yacht and the suitability of the proposed location.”
lend themselves to fabrication at a yard. Double curved surfaces in metal are inherently engrained in the production at a yard, so is work in wood, carbon fiber or fiberglass,” says Veronika. “Secondly, the material selection, use and finishing of the materials will naturally withstand marine use. This has proven to be an important step for us in the production of art – the move back to the source – the fabrication of sculptures at shipyards and a range of artisans associated with the yachting industry.”
When creating a piece for a yacht, it is inevitable that there will be a number of limitations that must be taken into account when creating a design to fit the brief. “These bespoke sculptures are usually more site-specific than others; they will be scaled to fit a specific space on the vessel, fabricated out of materials more resistant to corrosion, structurally stable and considerate of the movement of the vessel,” says Veronika.
Inevitably, the display of a sculpture on a moving yacht comes with practical considerations. “There are several technical requirements which need to be addressed when planning a three-dimensional piece of artwork for a yacht, most notably, the fixings must be able to withstand the extra loading,” says Guglielmo. “For a residential project this is usually a straightforward matter, with weight acting in a single, constant direction. But for a yacht, that same mass will be subject to the forces of roll, pitch, yaw and heave and depending on the nature of the artwork we would normally plan for two to three times the loading when designing the fixings.” In other words, don’t just buy a sculpture and expect to load it straight on to your yacht.
In fact, many sculpture projects that are created by Gill Schmid are actually built at shipyards, which, apart from the obvious nautical tie in, provide a highly suitable build location for this type of work. “The reason for this is twofold: Firstly, because the complex surface geometries
Kate Blomfield, founder of TANTRA Art, specializes in introducing superyacht clients to artists that they will have a connection with, and taking them to see the sculptors in action. “This ensures that the resulting sculpture has a deeply personal link to the client and yacht,” says Blomfield.

“Bespoke sculptures often grow out of other sculptural work done by the artist but are an artistic expression often more tailored towards what the client is looking for – something unique to the client, be it personal, a nod to their business, family, interests or others,” says Veronika. Designer Ed Cruikshank, whose portfolio includes pieces for the interior of the 101ft (31m) sailing yacht SAVANNAH and 111ft (34m) motor yacht VvS1 (now AKIKO), is passionate about taking a connection with a client and creating meaningful pieces that combine function with deeper meaning, often embedding hidden messages into their sculptural form. “Every piece I create is specific to the owner and the project, and I look into the meaning and relevance of the project to capture the essence of the people, place and time,” says Ed. Recent projects have included a statement art/furniture 1821 table piece, which perfectly combines form and function.
05
06
Modern innovations and new work mediums have meant that the potential for what can be achieved when creating sculptures is constantly broadening. The Gill Schmid team believe that up-and-coming trends will include the use of 3D printing for art on board superyachts. “We have been working at the forefront of 3D printing technologies for the past two decades, always pushing the boundaries and looking for new applications and techniques,” says Veronika. “Only now are these techniques starting to be used for sculptural, structural, mechanical or ornamental applications in yachts.” The possibilities that a sculpture’s design can offer stretch as far as the imagination and are as unique as the yachts they feature on. “Sculptures can be whimsical or serious in nature, they can be solid and emphasize mass or be light and open; they may be installed as interior or exterior artworks, large or small, standing as a single piece or a cluster of smaller individual studies,” says Guglielmo. “It is a medium with seemingly endless potential and a discipline which is a joy to work within.” A joy to behold, too.

FLIGHT DECK G O I N G T H E D I S TA N C E Navigator looks at the options for fractional ownership and lease programs for the long-haul WORDS DOUG GOLLAN
To access the longest range long-haul private jets has always meant fewer options than other cabin categories. Outside of full ownership, most charter operators have significant limitations on the types of trips they will take. After all, what Gulfstream G650 or Bombardier Global Express owner wants his or her jet making a bunch of short hops from New York to Washington D.C. or from Los Angeles to San Francisco? This increases both wear and tear and brings forward expensive maintenance, which is driven by landings and takeoffs, not miles flown. From a customer standpoint, therefore, while it is possible to charter on-demand state-of-the-art large cabin, longhaul aircraft, you might need to charter another aircraft
for short hauls that are part of a trip with several long-haul segments. It also means a myriad of configurations since large cabin jet owners have a multitude of options to make sure their aircraft is designed to their personal preferences. On the flip side is full aircraft ownership of jets that cost over $65 million new from the manufacturer, including all the responsibilities that come with it. Aside from management companies and charter brokers, there are essentially three key players offering global solutions for those looking to have a consistent experience from aircraft to aircraft without the hassle of ownership. Each of the three has a distinctive approach to how you can access these amazing machines.
01 NetJets offers the Bombardier Global 5000 and 6000 and will soon be adding the 7500 to its inventory
78
L U X L I F E F L I G H T D E C K
NetJets NetJets is the largest operator of private jets in the world. It offers the Bombardier Global 5000, 6000 and will soon be offering the 7500. All are available on fractional shares and leases, meaning a commitment of at least 50 hours per year for three to five years. This may sound like a lot of hours but when you think about their ability to fly more than 12 hours nonstop, just a few trips could take you up to the minimum hours. For the Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, the key selling points include the highest safety ratings and an impressive support team supported by in-house meteorologists. Its focus on safety goes beyond what the ratings agencies require and includes downloading cockpit data from every flight that it can then use for training. Data showing where each of its jets touched down on the runway for every landing led NetJets to design its own approaches into several mountain airports, further increasing their margin of safety. Pilots go through four days of simulator and classroom training twice per year and, despite a pilot shortage, NetJets has become a destination in aviation, attracting even former commercial airline pilots. Flight crews at NetJets average 16 years with the company and over 10,000 hours. Its attrition rate is under 5 percent, including retirements and extended leaves. In 2018 NetJets hired 185 new pilots who had an average of 6,500 flight hours. NetJet’s in-house team of weathermen focus on making sure each flight is as pleasant as possible, and work with
02
dispatchers and owner services teams to propose moving departures times for fliers who want to avoid turbulent weather or get ahead of possible airport closures. For long-haul flights, NetJets has been a leader in working with experts to study the effects of jet lag, and pilots are monitored not only by legal duty hours but for possible jet lag. Executives say when needed it means they can always change out crew or fly in backup aircraft, making sure owners stay on schedule as much of the time as possible. Flexjet While NetJets has put its power behind the Global Express, Flexjet is the exclusive fractional provider for the Gulfstream G650 in North America. More interestingly, it recently ditched the traditional hours-based model of fractional ownership and leases for a days-based one. Under Flexjet World Access, instead of buying 200 hours annually, you get 75 days, with three shares sold per aircraft. Company officials say cost for both buying your share and the monthly management fees remain the same, however the hourly rate is reduced to under $5,000 per hour. The idea is that you keep a single G650 with you for your entire trip, unlike traditional fractional ownership programs where you might get a different aircraft and crew for each segment, and planes seldom sit on the tarmac very long. The idea is to more closely replicate full aircraft

03
ownership. Whereas a one-week trip taking 40 flight hours from the U.S. to Asia and back would eat up 20 percent of your annual hours under the previous model, under Flexjet’s new approach it would take up less than 10 percent of your days. Flexjet wouldn’t disclose exactly how long they will let you keep a G650 with you, except to say it is based on demand, and in addition to only selling three shares per aircraft, there is an extra dedicated G650 to support the program. While it’s possible to fly as many as 400 hours or more per year in the Flexjet program, the downside is you also pay for ferry flights, so if you are going one-way from New York to Los Angeles, and then staying for some indefinite period, you would need to pay to ferry the aircraft back to New York, although the company says they will work to reduce empty legs customers pay for. As part of the launch, the program is limited to customers based in either New York or London. VistaJet While there are other owned fleet operators in the highend sector such as Qatar Executive, which holds the largest order book for G650s and G500s, VistaJet has established itself as the most global of any private aviation options, which includes an N-registered fleet to service domestic U.S. flights for customers. Expected to take delivery of its first Global 7500 this year (it has options for up to 30), Malta-based VistaJet is part of Dubai-based Vista Global, which now includes both XOJET, JetSmarter and Vista Lease, a management option for full aircraft owners.
04
While NetJets and Flexjet sell shares and leases, VistaJet takes an asset-free approach. It offers on-demand charter on its all-Bombardier fleet of like-configured aircraft, which includes the Global 5000 and 6000 for ultra longrange as well as the Challenger 850, 605 and 350 types. Its Program, a version of a jet card, offers customized fixed-rate, guaranteed availability pricing ranging from $12,000 to $18,000 per hour based on a commitment of at least 50 hours per year for three year. Its primary service area (meaning no ferry fees for empty legs) covers over 95 percent of the six continents. 02 NetJets is the largest operator of private jets in the world 03 Flexjet is the exclusive fractional provider for the Gulfstream G650 in North America 04 NetJets Bombardier Global 5000 interiors offer the utmost in luxury

AUTO CLASSIC R E V I VA L S Celebrating the halcyon days of high style, high speeds and high jinks, the appeal of classic cars and historic racing is broad and growing. Navigator looks at the latest event to join the classic car circuit – Audrain’s Newport Concours & Motor Week. WORDS MIRIAM CAIN
Scores of classic car races, rallies and concours are held around the world, attracting car enthusiasts to race and view some of the most iconic cars on earth. The most prestigious nostalgic events include the Goodwood Revival, Le Mans Classic, Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Mille Miglia, Monaco Historic GP, Monterey Car Week and Spa-Classic, and this year also sees the inaugural Audrain’s Newport Concours & Motor Week joining the lineup. Hosted in Newport, Rhode Island – for some the birthplace of automotive racing in America – the Fall event will welcome some of the greatest and most iconic cars in the world to different locations throughout the historic city. Having long celebrated being the epicenter of yachting in America, Newport has also been home to many firsts – the first polo match played in America in 1876, the first professional tennis matches in 1881, the first U.S. Open of golf in 1895, and every America’s Cup race from 1930 to 1983.

It is also home to one of the first sanctioned track races in America’s history, which dates back as early as the Gilded Age when Willie K. Vanderbilt and some of his closest friends raced their newly imported automobiles at Newport’s Aquidneck Park horse racing track. Their races were considered a high society event, with nearly 10,000 spectators showing up in formal dress to watch iconic Newport families racing their high-priced automobiles against one another. The famed Vanderbilt Cup took place for just two years in Newport, before Vanderbilt relocated his racing events to Long Island. The Cup was then hosted at a handful of circuits all over America after having its formative years in Newport, with the last race weekend being hosted at Long Island’s Bridgehampton Race Circuit in 1968 before it was discontinued. Today, Newport stands as a beacon representing America’s luxury sporting activities. Plugging into the coastal town’s rich automotive history, Audrain’s Newport Concours & Motor Week is set to become a major international concours event on the historic racing circuit, attracting car
enthusiasts from around the world. Hosted during the first week of October, the event is a showcase of New England at its most beautiful – when the Fall colors are at their peak. During the four-day event, Newport will provide the backdrop for the greatest cars in the world at different historic locations along the famed Bellevue Avenue. Events will include academic symposiums, car club convocations, a concert at the Concours Village at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and a Tour d’Elegance starting on the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge and motoring through Newport and along the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, the week will culminate with a traditional Concours d’Elegance at the Breakers Mansion, where the rarest automobiles in the world will be judged for a chance to win the coveted Willie K. Vanderbilt Trophy. The Audrain’s Concours d’Elegance will also be celebrated with a memorable gala evening. The Chairman of this year’s event is television show host and arch motorhead Jay Leno, while the Concours d’Elegance Chairman for 2019 is one of the premier automotive experts in the world, Donald Osborne.

A tiny, private paradise lying just off the northwest tip of Antigua, Jumby Bay has been the ultimate desert-island retreat since its opening in 1983. Under the ownership of the prestigious Oetker Collection, design and food factors have been ratcheted up to yet another level of excellence. Anchor in the shallow bay and take the tender ashore to discover the island’s heightened culinary scene. The Estate House is one of the top fine-dining establishments in the whole Caribbean. Merging classic fare with island flavors, the menu perfectly complements the circa 1830 plantation house in which the restaurant is housed. For slightly more low-key dining, The new Jumby Bay Veranda is an Italian trattoria where homemade pastas and fresh fish and meat dishes are cooked Italian style, all enhanced by Jumby Bay Farm’s herbs and fresh produce. With panoramic views over your yacht anchored in the bay below, the open-air restaurant also serves as the main social and culinary hub on the island. Those looking for an informal beach luncheon can take the tender ashore to The Beach Shack for local West Indian-style street food or The Pool Grille for casual bistro fare by the water’s edge. Jumby Bay is open from October through late August. The Estate House is open for dinner, from 6:30 to 9:30pm (closed Wednesday and Thursday). The dress code is “elegant but casual resort wear.” The Jumby Bay Veranda is open for lunch and dinner, from 12:00 to 3:00pm and 6:30 to 9:30pm, while The Jumby Bay Bar & Lounge is open from 10:00am until midnight. The dress code here for dinner is again elegant but casual resort wear, but lunch is more relaxed and beachwear is fine earlier in the day.
Top tip After dinner, head to the west side of the island, where many of the private villas are located, and catch the spectacular sunset at Pasture Bay beach

02 Step ashore for wow-factor at the Amanpuri Resort 03 Pan-Asian delicacies can be enjoyed at Black Ginger
It may be a cliché but Thailand is famously known as the “Land of Smiles,” and for good reason. The raw beauty, ridiculously clear waters, uninhabited islands, pristine beaches, amazing underwater life and well-protected anchorages give anyone cruising this hauntingly beautiful region of Southeast Asia something to smile about. The “Gateway to Southeast Asia,” the “Reigning maritime jewel of Southeast Asia” and “Land of Plenty” are other well-known clichés but there really is no better place to get a first taste of Asia than Thailand. The westernized feel of places such as Bangkok and Phuket provide a gentle introduction for those new to the region, while the marine paradise that runs around the Andaman Sea coastline is better than any picture postcard. The only question is, in a country that has so much appeal, where should you go? Phuket For many of those embarking on a luxury yacht charter, Phuket is probably the most popular place to start. At the northeast end of Phuket, the Yacht Haven Marina is the ideal launchpad. Just minutes from Phuket International Airport you can step aboard your yacht and acclimatize to life on board as you explore what is the largest and most heavily developed of the nation’s islands. Avoid the crowds as you steer away from bustling Patong beach, stepping ashore to the less intense and relatively peaceful east coast to discover the fabulous food and exotic nightlife, spirit houses and magical markets. The island boasts a number A
of Buddhist temples, the most famous being Wat Chalong and Wat Phra Thong. Phuket is also home to some of Asia’s finest golf courses. The Blue Canyon Country Club offers two championship layouts: the Lakes Course and the Canyon Course, both boasting fantastic views. There are also a number of stylish resort spas on the island where those with weary sea legs can step ashore for pampering treatments. The spa at the Banyan Tree, located on the northwest coast, has earned accolades from leading magazines the world over. Alternatively, Amanpuri is the place to step ashore for wow-factor wellbeing – it’s almost impossible not to attain an inner glow at this glamorous hideaway retreat. Tip – Take an endorphin-releasing kickboxing class followed by a relaxing massage at Amanpuri. The cuisine on Phuket is some of the finest in Thailand. Blending Indian, Malaysian and Chinese influences, PanAsian delicacies can be found at Black Ginger. Designed like a traditional mansion, the setting in the middle of a lagoon is as spectacular as the menu that celebrates the authenticity of the island’s heritage. Sitting on a rocky bluff between Kata and Kata Noi beaches on Phuket’s winding and verdant west coast, the award-winning Mom Tri’s Restaurant boasts stunning views over the Andaman Sea. For seasonal tasting menus with a seafood focus, the Beach House is located in a secluded setting on Natai Beach. Alternatively, for authentic street food, feast on local specialties from stalls found in Phuket’s Old Town.

Phuket has a reputation for its party scene, and while the island does have a sleazy side, it’s easy to avoid this by simply bypassing Patong beach. Instead, head to the south of the island to witness the sunset from the rooftop bar at Baba Nest. Suspended in the rocks of the island’s Cape Panwa peninsula, the bar’s square terrace is surrounded by infinity pools and provides incomparable sunset views over Panwa Bay and all the way to Phang Nga Bay. Tip – Make reservations well in advance – Baba Nest is a regular on the “Best Rooftop Bars in the World” lists and can be fully booked up to a month in advance. There is a choice of beach clubs on the island, the most popular of these among the superyacht set being Catch Beach Club. B C Phang Nga Bay Phuket’s Yacht Haven Marina is the ideal launch pad for a cruise through the largely uninhabited surrounding islands of Phang Nga Bay. You’ll quickly ease into the tranquil pace of life on board, relaxing on deck for the first leg which takes you across to Khao Phing Kan – once the location for the James Bond classic The Man with the Golden Gun. The island boasts incredible topography, including steep karst outcrops and ancient “hongs” (the Thai word for rooms). Take a starlit expedition through the famous caves – accessed by narrow tunnels – to the spectacular open-air spaces where you will discover a unique eco system with rare species of flora and fauna. Tip – Plan your visit for late afternoon, when the crowds have eased and the daytrippers have gone home.

After a peaceful night’s anchorage it’s just a short cruise south across Phang Nga Bay to the Hong Islands in the Krabi province. Part of the National Marine Park, the four islands of the Koh Hong group include the uninhabited Koh Hong. Here you will find rare species of birds, white-faced gibbons and lizards lazing on the white sandy beaches. On arrival, transfer to a somewhat more modest form of waterborne transport than your superyacht – a kayak. Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore the many uninhabited islands of these waters. Guided by the crew, or venturing out on your own, you can weave between rock formations and glide beneath dramatic cliffs that surround large lagoons.

To Serve 1. Pour the blended beverage into a tall glass and garnish with sprigs of Thai basil 3. Add a dash of Five Spice powder on top. (optional) Credit Brett Hart – Barman & Certified Whiskey Steward Sweetwater & Saxon, Palm Beach County, FL

D Phi Phi Islands Cruise south to the world-famous Phi Phi Islands, securing a prime spot from which to explore these two charming isles the following day. Phi Phi Don (hilly island) echoes the shape of a lopsided butterfly, half of which is scrub-covered cliff and the other half jungle-clad with coconut groves and palm-fringed beaches. The sandy spit connecting them was originally a peaceful little Muslim fishing village but, despite the growth in tourism, this idyllic corner of the world still retains its remote beauty. Phi Phi Don is also stunning below the waterline, making it one of the finest diving spots in Southeast Asia. Hard coral gardens are a colorful playground for rare and remarkable tropical creatures, and soft corals and dramatic vertical walls make for the most diverse marine environment. Swim and snorkel along the coral reefs, wander up the sand to a beachfront café and enjoy the jungle-like interior with a hike up to Phi Phi Viewpoint. E Lanta Islands One of the traditional activities for the inhabitants of Lanta Islands is fishing, and most of the longtail boatmen

offer fishing trips. Head out early morning and enjoy your very own “catch of the day” in the evening back onboard. Alternatively, take to the water by kayak and discover the considerable area of mangrove forest between the two Lanta islands of Koh Noi and Koh Yao Yai – home to all sorts of rare species of birds, monkeys, crabs and other wildlife. Protected as part of Mu Ko Lanta National Marine Park, the pristine corals and shallow waters of the twin Koh Rok islands are probably the best snorkeling spots in the south Andaman Sea. Koh Rok Nok is the larger of the two islands and the best spot from which to explore the waters and see the breathtaking numbers of tropical fish and other marine life. Step ashore and stroll along the white sandy beaches of Ao Man Sai, Laem Tong and Sarn Chao and discover footlong monitor lizards as you go. Separated by an 850-foot channel carpeted with coral, much of which is no more than 15 feet under the surface, the second island, Koh Rok Nai, is mainly rocky with a tiny beach. Cruise to the west of the island for views of the magnificent waterfall and its fresh water tumbling down the sheer cliffs into the sea.

16 F Batong Group Thailand’s southernmost islands, the Batong Group, are not far from Thailand’s maritime border with Malaysia. Here, the towering rock formations and crystal waters of Tarutao National Marine Park – a 61-island group some 20 miles from the mainland – are still relatively off the radar for most superyacht itineraries. Drop anchor at Ko Adang, its empty shoreline and untamed jungle are a timely reminder of how islands like Phuket once looked before tourism took hold in the 1960s. Like the Lanta group of islands, the Batong Group is still protected by their National Park status and provide untouched vistas and secluded beaches aplenty. Jump in and snorkel through the crystal clear waters teeming with marine life.

G Langkawi Deep in the heart of Southeast Asia, Malaysia and the heavenly islands of the Langkawi archipelago entice the discerning traveler to experience a fusion of Chinese, Indian and native cultures. Langkawi itself is actually a group of 99 islands showcasing a geological and ecological purity that simply cannot be found on Malaysia’s mainland. The waters around Langkawi are shallow and warm, but in terms of sea life, unfortunately, they suffer by comparison with the snorkeling and diving opportunities that the Thai islands have offered previously. Instead, step ashore and enjoy the luxury island resort of Langkawi, renowned for its opulent hotels, superb spas and fantastic cuisine (Langkawi cultivates its own island variation of Malay cooking). There are no high-rise developments in Langkawi and much of the main island is still given over to traditional buildings. The Four Seasons Resort, for example, is a low spread of traditionally built Malay-style houses and is where you will find the resort’s Geo Spa. Step ashore for an Ayurveda treatment focusing on creating an “elemental balance” and prepare yourself for your transition back to 21st century life. If you are not quite ready to contemplate city life, the private island of Pangkor Laut Resort offers unadulterated indulgence. Spend a few nights ashore relaxing at the hotel’s Spa Village and gather your strength for a return to the real world.
For a seamless luxury travel experience you can fly directly to Phuket with NetJets, Northrop & Johnson's preferred private jet partner. www.netjets.com

A city built on seven fishing islands reclaimed from the glittering Arabian Sea, Mumbai was first seized by the Portuguese and then gifted to the British Empire in the 17th century. It is a city of contrasts, as some of the country’s most expensive real estate and Bollywood homes are interspersed by a sprawling urban mass housing over 22 million inhabitants. Its high-rise buildings, jewel-encrusted palaces and glitzy shopping malls merge seamlessly with Victorian architecture and history. The European influences provide a stunning juxtaposition to the South Asian aesthetic and vibrancy of this Indian powerhouse. Restaurants and hotels are becoming ever more hip and slick, evidenced by the recent opening of establishments such as Asia’s first Soho House hotel and Hakkasan.

Pillow talk The iconic 1903 Taj Mahal Palace hotel is in Colaba, home to the mix of colonial sites and local design stores that define modern Mumbai. This majestic hotel has become as much a landmark as the Gateway of India arch that sits on the harbor opposite. Most of the 550 silk-clad rooms have views of the sea or the palm-fringed pool, and the opulent suites have housed countless Bollywood and Hollywood stars. Even if you are staying somewhere else, the swanky Sea Lounge bar, with its street food menu and extensive tea list, are inducement enough to stop by. Not to mention the superb contemporary Wasabi by Morimoto restaurant, which was recognized by San Pellegrino as one of Asia’s best restaurants in 2018 and flies its ingredients in directly from Japan. For those who prefer a more modern vibe, the airy and contemporary Oberoi is the best of its kind. Located in Mumbai’s business district and known for its spectacular Arabian Sea views, it is also famed for its unparalleled service which includes a butler. Its beauty lies as much within as without, with mother-of-pearl cabinetry, hardwood floors, light-filled rooms and a clean, contemporary design. Michelin-starred chef Vineet Bhatia commands Ziya, the Indian specialty restaurant. If you have a head for heights and really want to enjoy the views of the city, head to the St. Regis Mumbai. Situated in Lower Parel, the hotel is set in the city’s tallest skyscraper. On the 10th floor lies possibly the sexiest swimming pool in the country. Fringed by palm trees, it really is the spot to sit and take in the expanse of the city. Just one floor down you will find the Great Hall, a luxuriously appointed room with amazing chandeliers, beautiful pianos and sweeping staircases.

Eat, Drink & Dance Enter a culinary paradise. The past decade has seen an influx of international chefs with street cred and flair descending on Mumbai, opening inventive restaurants with radically tasty dishes to supplement the traditionally savored Mumbai street food. Designed by Gilles & Boissier and located in the fashionable Bandra district, Hakkasan’s modern Cantonese cuisine and world-class mixology has made it one of Mumbai’s most popular dining destinations. Chef Floyd Cardoz’s Bombay Canteen in Lower Parel still tops every foodie’s list, with its seasonal new “Taste of the Wild” menu featuring wild vegetables from Maharashtra. AER on the 34th floor of the Four Seasons hotel has become known for its prune-infused Blue Label whisky “Professor” cocktail, gourmet Asian teasers and mouthwatering tapas with a stunning view of the Sea Link bridge. Things liven up on Sunday afternoons, when DJs host Sunset Sunday sundowners. For pure understated elegance, The Table in Colaba is second to none, bringing its food in from its own farm in Alibag and taking inspiration for its sharing dishes from all over the world. For more relaxed dining, Oh! Calcutta in Tardeo

serves beautiful Bengali food and has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and Trishna in Fort is known for its amazing seafood and signature butter garlic crab (December only) in a simple setting. Described as Mumbai’s hippest hotel, the new members’ club, Soho House, is nestled in the hills high above Juhu beach. It has become a magnet for India’s Who’s Who: Bollywood heavyweights, It girls, DJs and fashion designers all converge around the pool in the serene rooftop terrace’s striped cabanas to watch the sun sink into the sea while enjoying Soho House’s famous Manita cocktail. This is the most coveted spot in Mumbai and no wonder, as you feel as if you are on a colonial Indian veranda with leafy plants, bamboo lampshades and pastel banquettes. The Olive Bar & Kitchen in Pali Hill is a long, cold drink on a hot day kind of place with clean, whitewashed walls. It is definitely one of Mumbai’s most popular restaurants, especially for Sunday brunch in its sunlit courtyard. But it is on Thursday nights this place really comes to life, serving the most beautiful people the most stylish cocktails for miles around.

Do & Discover There is so much to see and do in Mumbai, from marveling at iconic structures such as the Gateway of India monument to exploring its museums, temples, mosques and churches. Admire the city’s skyline with a stroll along coastal Marine Drive in early evening and then experience a white-knuckled rickshaw ride through the Bollywood hills. Or take a helicopter ride to view Mumbai’s beautiful landmarks and the romantic string of lights known as the “Queen’s necklace” along the Colaba shoreline from the skies with a chaat-laden picnic. Old world glamour is back at India’s only Royal Opera House, which re-opened three years ago after a full-scale restoration. If it’s retail therapy you are seeking then Palladium Mall is home to some of the fanciest designer clothing shops in South Mumbai. It is where you’ll find the particularly vibrant maze of streets known as Kala Ghoda, the perfect place to hunt for exquisite handmade clothes, artisan homeware and modern paintings. Crawford Market and Chor Bazaar are also colorful, bustling and exciting places to soak up the local atmosphere.

The juxtaposition of clean, modern lines amid the natural splendor of a pond-front property is a true delight. This Georgica Pond East Hampton home is large and livable, featuring a contemporary elegance second to none. Two floors offer 9,000-square-feet of space, five bedrooms and limitless amenities. The home is built of limestone, steel and glass for a strikingly strong aesthetic. Architect Harry Bates of Bates Masi + Architects LLC and his award-winning New York City and Hamptons teams are behind this masterpiece.
Thanks to the abundance of glass utilized in the structure of the home, the rooms are flooded with ambient light and the beauty of nature resonates within the walls of the dwelling. Not to be outdone, however, the home’s lighting was specifically designed with an art aficionado in mind to properly highlight works of art that adorn the interior walls.
When entering the home on the ground floor, guests are greeted by a grand foyer that leads to the spacious, open living room and a grandiose chef ’s kitchen. Also found “This crisp and timeless modern residence is a tribute and there is a small bar, centrally located and ideally suited testimony to the talents of Harry Bates,” says Tim Davis, for socializing. The home’s open and malleable configuration promises versatile, spacious, contemporary living. “The beautiful Wisteria-covered breezeway coming from the first-floor bedrooms continues on to a four-car garage and storage area. The home’s enormous porch proceeds outdoors to the pool area with an oversized, glamorous lap pool surrounded by covered limestone terraces and mature landscaping, a cabana, a snack bar and a pool house,” says Davis. While the home and its amenities combine to create a veritable masterpiece, they are situated in an incredibly pristine, natural landscape that enhances their beauty. The property comprises 2.3 acres of land, including 435 feet of pond-front property along the shore of the Georgica Pond, a sparkling interior coastal lagoon that
is utilized by residents for a myriad of watersports activities like sailing, kayaking and more. The property is located in an extremely prominent neighborhood with many high-profile families and residents. Further neighborhoods surrounding the pond also are home to famous inhabitants, including many artists who are drawn to this waterside area for its natural beauty.
