Northrop & Johnson discusses the yachting trends making waves
Offering designs with boundless cruising capabilities, yacht builders are expanding the possibilities for exploring remote destinations in ultimate luxury. But what is an explorer yacht? How does it differ from a traditional superyacht, or even an expedition yacht? For the latter, the terms are interchangeable, both referring to longrange ocean-going yachts that can be operated in diverse weather conditions. While all expedition yachts could be classed as explorers, not every explorer can be considered as an expedition yacht, which has the added capabilities of an ice-class hull for those looking to explore higher latitudes, helipads, additional storage for greater autonomy, and improved range. What explorer, expedition, and superyachts do have in common is an unparalleled level of luxurious comforts, providing owners with a sumptuous retreat, whether cruising the French Riviera or the Northwest Passage.
While some of the most famous explorer yachts are large in length and gross tonnage, including the 414’ (126.6m) OCTOPUS and the 466’ (141.6m) NORD, smaller explorer yachts have become more popular, with pocket explorer yachts sized between 78’ (24m) and 146’ (45m) accounting for almost 70 percent of the explorer market. One of the original explorer yacht specialists, Cantiere delle Marche (CdM), has been building compact yet long-range explorer yachts for over a decade. This isn’t long in terms of yacht building, but the yard’s courage to explore a market that didn’t really exist when it started out has proved to be its success. Indeed, CdM has conquered the luxury explorer market with its Flexplorer line. Possessing all the seafaring comfort typical of explorers with a robust and rugged exterior and functionality combined with the sophisticated, luxurious attributes of a superyacht, the Flexplorer line ranges from 132’ (40m) to 146’ (45m) and offers generous interior and exterior spaces for both guests and crew, as well as all the storage required for longrange cruising supplies, water toys, and sports equipment.
At 146’ (44.3m), the recently launched Flexplorer 146 MAVERICK is equipped with a 22mm “ice-belt” above and below the waterline to ensure safe navigation at high latitudes. “MAVERICK’s owners have fully embraced her capabilities and will soon be embarking on a journey through the Northwest Passage, with plans that extend far beyond, including a world tour that will take them to the most remote corners of the planet,” says Vasco Buonpensiere, CEO and Sales & Marketing Director. CdM currently has 17 models in build, including the RJ155 (the line’s flagship), two Flexplorer 146 models with interiors by Nauta Yachts and Winch Design, and a 154’ (47m) one-off design by Giorgio M. Cassetta.
THE EXPERTS
ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT
Navigator Knows
Given the increased demand to venture beyond the beaten track, Navigator talks to the shipyards about the rising demand for explorer yachts and their latest offerings
The Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo has also ventured into explorer-style yachts, recognizing that its younger client demographic is united in a love for exploring independently. “Our clients come from diverse backgrounds and nationalities ranging from seasoned adventurers to luxury enthusiasts seeking unparalleled experiences on the seas,” says Ferruccio Rossi, Sanlorenzo’s Executive Director and General Manager. Combining Sanlorenzo’s unmistakable elegance with large, articulated spaces and the latest technologies has allowed the shipyard to transform what has historically been a commercial vessel into a sophisticated superyacht designed to allow complete autonomy to explore far-off locations. The 500EXP model has a range of 4,000 nautical miles and the ability to carry a helicopter or a seaplane, a submarine, and large tenders. “The amazing aesthetic, and its living and sailing qualities are certainly among the strengths of this successful model, but the resolutely original feature of the 500EXP is the touch-and-go helipad, which is unique in a yacht under 500 gross tonnes,” says Rossi. With 11 units launched and two in build, the Sanlorenzo 500EXP is a proven success. “Several of our explorer yacht owners have circumnavigated the globe many times; one of the first 500EXP to be delivered has been used by her owner throughout the Far East, where, due to the lack of ports, the helipad has come into its own,” says Rossi.
For those looking to dip a toe in the water, Numarine’s entrylevel pocket explorer Numarine 22XP is the smallest of the Turkish shipyard’s seven XP trawler-explorer models. “The 22XP and 26XP are both composite, but nevertheless their explorer credentials include a hull design that provides a balance below the waterline for stability in rough sea conditions, such as winds in excess of Force 8,” explains Numarine CEO Ömer Malaz. “The mid-sized models in our XP range include the 32XP, 37XP, and 40MXP, with steel hulls and composite superstructures, and the 45XP with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, which is the largest of the XP line.”
Catering for the larger side of the explorer yacht market with its SeaXplorer line, Damen Yachting delivered its first SeaXplorer 58, PINK SHADOW, in 2023. Built for adventure and exploration, PINK SHADOW has a 5,000 nautical mile range at 11.5 knots, an ice-class hull and 30 days of autonomy. She also carries a wide range of toys, including two multi-role tenders, motorcycles, and vehicles for both road and off-road use. An infinity-edged pool, lounges, Jacuzzi, and bar enhance her luxury exploration amenities, while an observation lounge can be turned into a snug cinema room and a sheltered deck area into a cabana lounge
and bar. Her crew accommodations also include room for an extra two expedition leaders or scientific researchers.
“Our clients vary in age, gender and nationality, but all seem to share the same desire for boundless cruising ability,” says Enrique Tintore, Design Manager for the SeaXplorer range at Damen Yachting. “They usually have a purpose behind their builds – they want to explore and they want to experience all that the ocean can offer and to do so without limitation,” says Tintore. “However, they also wish to minimize the operational impact of their yachting ventures on the environment, and to contribute to scientific research and environmental studies while doing so. This trend is particularly evident in those who have purchased yachts from our Amels 60 series, which feature hybrid propulsion.” Damen Yachting will deliver the first SeaXplorer 60 to her owner later this year. “The SeaXplorer 60 features Hybrid by Amels technology, which powers her at seven knots on electric propulsion alone,” says Tintore. “This not only reduces her carbon footprint, but allows her to cruise in some of the planet’s most remote and pristine areas with minimal ecological impact.”
Yachting philanthropy, particularly in the explorer yacht segment, is of vital importance for scientific research and Damen Yachting’s “Love Our Oceans” campaign supports all its owners with any scientific or environmental initiatives they wish to undertake. Fortunately, the explorer type of vessel usually attracts clients with a certain attitude towards sustainability and yachting philanthropy. Many owners in the Damen Yachting fleet have offered their yachts, time, and resources to facilitate scientific research and help advance environmental initiatives. “Carl Allen, owner of the yacht support vessel AXIS, which is part of the Allen Exploration Fleet, has made it his personal mission to invest in philanthropic excursions and raise awareness of plastic pollution,” says Tintore. “Tommy Allen is another name to mention. Founder of the exploration company Five Oceans Global Solutions, Allen’s recently launched 174’ (53.3m) Damen Yachting support vessel has been built for marine exploration and environmental conservation; and probably the best-known yacht research laboratory is onboard the Amels-built GENE MACHINE.”
It isn’t just the larger explorer vessels that get involved in environmental initiatives. “I am always happy to hear from our explorer owners who have taken their vessels on scientific missions,” says Sanlorenzo’s Ferruccio Rossi. “We had one collecting ice samples from the Alaskan fjords, for example, and another has been involved in initiatives to protect the Great Barrier Reef.”
“Our clients want to explore and they want to experience all that the ocean can offer and do so without limitation”

Citi Private Bank
Using portfolio intelligence to get the most out of your investments
Great wealth typically takes many years to build. Creating a long-term, core investment portfolio is then key to preserving and growing that wealth for future generations –and that begins with a robust long-term plan.
Wise investors have a strong core
A long-term investment plan provides vital direction and discipline to a core portfolio. Based on an investor’s goals, risk tolerance, and other criteria, such a plan sets out a global mix of asset classes – typically including developed and emerging equities and various types of bonds. In our experience, following a plan is likelier to deliver returns over time while also helping to ride out volatility in markets.
Investors who do not follow a long-term plan typically end up holding too much cash, which can hinder their returns, or taking concentrated bets on individual markets or asset classes. Concentrated positions are risky, given that no single asset class consistently outperforms, while holding too few asset classes tends to increase portfolio volatility and the danger of permanent loss of capital.
Making informed decisions
Every investor and family has their own goals and needs. This calls for a personalized approach to building a long-term investment plan and a core portfolio. Having a wealth partner with sophisticated portfolio construction tools is essential. That’s where Citi Private Bank comes in.
An established partner to many of the world’s wealthiest families, Citi Private Bank uses its own methodology to customize a plan or “strategic asset allocation” for each client. Their teams of professionals then help to implement that plan in a core portfolio, highlighting investment strategies from across its global platform.
In addition to providing access to global markets, Citi Private Bank has a portfolio analytics team that can help you evaluate your existing portfolio with proprietary modelling techniques and tools. This can enable a deeper understanding of your overall portfolio exposure, helping you to identify gaps and overlaps and to understand features such as your concentrated positions. The fuller picture that emerges can assist you in making informed decisions and optimizing positioning.
Whatever your investment goals and objectives, staying resolute to a plan and working with the right wealth partner can help preserve your life's achievements and ensure your legacy lives on.

WORDS MIKE ESPINDLEArt Basel
Basel, Switzerland
June 13-16, 2024
While the winter Art Basel/Miami Beach art show continues to grow in popularity, if you haven’t been to the Swiss original, you really should do yourself that favor. The small city of Basel is quite charming, but built for large-scale gatherings: a recently and artfully remodeled convention center, called the Messeplatz; unique floating riverboat accommodations in addition to traditional luxury hotels; and its own potent art museum, the Kunstmuseum Basel. Art Basel attendees this year can expect multiple sectors highlighting the expected (artists and works represented by galleries), as well as the unexpected (films, interactive interviews, and a series of location-specific installations). Participating galleries this year represent the very best of global curation; think Cologne’s elegantly curated Gallery Thomas Zander or Brazil’s street-inspired A Gentil Carioca gallery. All told, you will have access to offerings from over 200 galleries and more than 4,000 noted international artists. artbasel.com
The Armory Show
New York, NY
September 6-8, 2024 (VIP Preview September 5)
Held at the glass-encased Javits Center on Manhattan’s West Side, art fair lovers are abuzz with anticipation for 2024‘s edition as this is the second year New York’s largest art fair will lift the curtain under new Frieze art organization ownership (who acquired the show in the summer of 2023). The legacy show continues to operate as its own estimable brand; but perhaps after more than a full year of new ownership, some changes may be more apparent. Given that, you can certainly anticipate The Armory Show to play its ongoing role in New York’s cultural landscape with unmatched programming, curatorial initiatives, institutional partnerships, and activations. Expect sectors covering gallerists representing contemporary artists, impactful solo artist exhibitions, a to-benamed guest curator-focused presentation, representation of newer galleries (under 10 years old), curated one-time installations, and a special venue for not-for-profit museums, galleries, and foundations. This visionary approach is what makes The Armory Show New York’s self-claimed art fair. thearmoryshow.com
London Art Biennale
London, England
Late July 2024 (unconfirmed)
Perhaps milking a bit of drama around this edgy, very popular, totally free, and open-to-the-public event, as of press time the organizers of the London Art Biennale hadn’t officially released dates and other information about the show. However, some London art press are reporting a late July date and a return to the Chelsea Old Town Hall venue on King’s Road. So stay tuned, as they say. The show’s unique, inclusive vision is curated by a trio of organizations (an art critic group, an art museum, and a prominent gallery), which delivers a free-form, non-thematic presentation that democratically represents all artistic movements, globally, along with a heavy dose of emerging global artists. Expect the unexpected; last year’s first prize winner was Russia’s controversial Marina Orlova. londonbienalle.co.uk
Fine Arts Paris & La Biennale (FAB)
Paris, France
November 21-27, 2024
“La Biennale” has been operating for over 60 years, holding a heralded position as not only one of the City of Lights’ favored art happenings, but one of its greatest all-city civic events, as well. Held at the majestic Grand Palais Éphémère, a focus on antique furniture and decor, in addition to fine art work, is one of many qualities that sets FAB apart from other fairs. On the furnishings side, a highlight from last year was a restored Art Deco bathroom originally designed by master Armand-Albert Rateau. But also expect some design-world marquee quality to the artwork offered: pieces from the collections of Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, and Hubert De Givenchy stole headlines in 2023. fabparis.com

Ulysse Nardin
Freak S Nomad
When the original Ulysse Nardin Freak watch first debuted in 2001, its never-before-seen approach to wrist-based time telling (no crown, the entire watch movement loaded up on a carousel arm that was also the minute hand, and more), qualified it as an outsider, an objet d’art in the watch world. In the ensuing decades, as the Freak’s appearance has become more of an established and familiar wristwatch format, Ulysse Nardin has focused on leveraging the flexibility of the watch as much as its artfulness. The new Freak S Nomad continues to push the watch’s creative boundaries within a decidedly futuristic oeuvre, but it uses the classic decoration technique of guilloche (fine, repetitive pattern engraving on a watch dial). The “twin-engine” oscillators on either side of the arm carrying the UN-251 movement inspire a picture of a kind of sci-fi glider coasting over the surface of the golden sands of a far-flung planet. They are set on a lightweight 45mm titanium case topped with a carbon fiber layer between the case and black PVD-coated bezel. The Freak S Nomad is limited to 99 editions. ulysse-nardin.com

Rolex
Platinum Perpetual 1908
Of course, esteemed watchmaker Rolex bowed a few new timepieces that will surely be hits (including a few maritime-related watches in updated versions of the yachting GMT-Master II and pro-diving Deepsea models). But, overall, for this Geneva show, the lesser-known, more elegant, purely horological-appeal 1908 watch got a well-deserved moment in the sun. First off, well, platinum. That precious metal just works so well with the 39mm 1908’s knurled bezel classicism. But Rolex didn’t stop there. The remarkably gem-like ice-blue dial is the product of an exacting “grain de riz” guilloche process. Rolex rarely uses guilloche on its modern watches, but, when they do - Wow! The color is both eye-catching yet doesn’t take anything away from the 1908’s legibility. A newly developed Calibre 7140 rounds out this ode to fine horology. rolex.com

Van Cleef & Arpels
Lady Arpels Brise d’Ete
For generations, the jewelry house of Van Cleef & Arpels has crafted exceptional animated, kinetic art moments as standalone tabletop pieces and within its elegant wristwatch offerings. Capturing the whimsical point in time when a soft summer breeze blows across an idyllic field, the new Brise d’Ete is like a relaxing spa experience on your wrist. Encased in a lady-like 38mm gold case adorned with a blanket of diamonds, the discreet pusher at 8 o’clock starts the “breeze” and animates multiple elements of the dial (which carries a spectrum of fine gem and decoration components, from mother of pearl and exquisite enameling to tsavorite and spessartite garnets). Blades of grass and flowers sway in the wind, and the bejeweled butterflies flit about, finally landing on the retrograde outer index ring to indicate the precise time. Don’t forget: this special piece of animated wrist wear is still a perfectly accurate watch, after all. The Lady Arpels Brize d’Ete will be available this fall, and the price is strictly on request. vancleefarpels.com
Chopard
L.U.C. Quattro Spirit 25
The house of Chopard presented a raft of enticing new models in Geneva (including a new version of its popular racing-inspired Mille Miglia watch created in collaboration with racing legend Jacky Ickx, the Mille Miglia JX). But the sheer simple elegance, and, well, “blackness” of this latest edition of the L.U.C. Quattro Spirit 25 drew a great deal of watch fan attention. For this year, the “jumping hours” timepiece is rendered in Chopard’s own ethical 18K white gold for the 40mm case with a rich, inky black grand feu enamel dial that just begs to tuck itself underneath the sleeve of a black-tie dinner jacket. But, to perhaps create some creative cocktail chatter, this Quattro Spirit 25 (the “quattro” referring to the watch movement’s four barrels that provide 192 hours - that’s 8 days - of power reserve) features just a single elaborate white gold minute hand and deceptively simple 60-minute index ring to break up the rich black dial. At the top of each hour, the next hour numeral quickly jumps into place in the oversize aperture at 6 o’clock. A little wrist theater for your next soiree, perhaps?

Where It Matters, When It Matters
The ACJ TwoTwenty & ACH160
WORDS SEAN M c GEOUGH
For more than half a century, Airbus has been the vanguard of the global aerospace sector, creating and manufacturing some of the world’s most innovative, reliable and trusted aircraft. Today, we are leading the decarbonization of air travel through the development of cutting-edge technologies, the championing of alternative fuels, and an unwavering dedication to enhancing fuel economy.
Airbus Business Aviation is powered by that same pioneering spirit, exemplified by the ACJ TwoTwenty Xtra-large cabin business jet and ACH160 corporate helicopter. Both push the boundaries of productivity and comfort, backed by Airbus’ legendary standards for dispatch reliability and global customer support network.
For longer trips, the ACJ TwoTwenty offers a true office environment with best-in-class connectivity and a range of relaxation options, including a California King-size bed, an en suite bathroom with a rain shower, and 55-inch (140-cm) 4K TV screens. With six VIP zones measuring 786 sq ft (73 sq m), the ACJ TwoTwenty has twice the cabin space as similarly priced long-range business jets.
The ultra-modern ACH160 is the quintessence of efficiency and elegance for the ‘last mile.’ It is an impressive combination of power and beauty, bypassing traffic jams and inaccessible routes with ease, delivering passengers directly to their ultimate destinations, whether a heliport in Manhattan or the deck of a yacht.
Together, these aircraft offer a seamless experience from takeoff to touchdown. They cater to those for whom time is the ultimate commodity, providing a means to reclaim every moment lost to the inefficiencies of commercial air travel.
Every design detail, from the richly appointed cabins to the sleek, simplified flight decks, is a testament to Airbus's dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and safety. These aircraft enable the leaders, the thinkers, the innovators to make the most of their time in the air, ensuring that when it comes to making an impact on the world stage, every moment is spent without compromise.

When headed to your superyacht, it’s never been easier to go the distance – nonstop! The evolution of private jets has given us a new generation of aircraft that can fly farther, and this is not limited to large jets. Even smaller jets have improved their duration. But let’s start with those long-haul missions.
Bombardier’s Global 7500 and the Gulfstream G650ER are the current long-flight leaders, although their successors, the Global 8000 and G700, are on the way. According to the manufacturer, the Global 8000 claims a top speed of Mach 0.94, a typical cruise speed of Mach 0.85, and a range of up to 8,000 nautical miles. That would put Bangkok to New York within its nonstop range. Gulfstream says the G700 can travel 7,750 nautical miles nonstop, which would allow flights from the Big Mango to the Big Apple. Of course, with $80 million price tags and ample waiting lists, the good news is there are current options via fractional ownership and jet cards, which can get you from here to there without a refueling stop.
As of April, NetJets had 68 various Global types in its fleet, including 10 Global 7500s. It offers the airplane in fractional shares with a commitment of as few as 50 hours per year: essentially two transoceanic roundtrips. VistaJet offers its Global fleet, including the Global 7500, via its Program jet card, which starts at just 25 hours per year.
If you are a Gulfstream fan, Flexjet and Qatar Executive offer programs on the iconic brand’s current flagship, the G650. Flexjet’s fractional ownership offers both a days-based and by-the-hour solution. Qatar Executive offers a jet card that only requires a one-off 50-hour purchase, although it has restricted sales in some regions over the past year.
While the OEMs have packed in the comfort, your comfort will largely be determined by how many friends and family you fly with. These aircraft can seat up to 16 passengers on paper, but they are most comfortable with six to eight or fewer people for longer flights.
The good news is if you need to fly a bigger group of your favorite people, the Airbus ACJ TwoTwenty has your name on it. It has around three times as much space as other long-range business jets, with 786 square feet of floor space. Its cabin width of 10 feet 8 inches and cabin height of 6 feet 11 inches add to the feeling of spaciousness, and up to six living zones are available. It has a range of 5,650 nautical miles, or around 12 hours nonstop, and is now available for charter flights.
Of course, sometimes your yacht is nearby. Embraer’s Phenom 300E adds around 100 extra miles of range, enabling you to get deeper into the Caribbean or from the U.K. to the far reaches of the Eastern Med. NetJets, Flexjet, Airshare, Nicholas Air, Magellan Jets, and GrandView Aviation are among the flight providers that feature the best-selling light jet of the past decade in fractional or jet card programs. Like the big jets, comfort and range are determined by passengers and baggage, weather conditions, winds, runway length, and so forth. For example, the Phenom is often offered in a seven- or eight-seat configuration. That typically means that in addition to four facing club seats and a rear row of single seats across from each other, there is a single-seat or two-seat divan flush against the wall across from the forward boarding door. However, some brokers also market the belted lavatory as an available seat, so understand which configuration you are buying into.
Sometimes going long can mean something in between. Embraer stretches the midsize category with its Praetor 500. At 3,460 nautical miles, the remake of its Legacy 450 can fly from the U.S. West Coast to Hawaii or Chicago to Barbados. NetJets, Flexjet, and Canada’s AirSprint all feature the Praetor 500 in their fractional programs.

The recent rebirth of MB’s legacy off-roader, the G 550, brings cutting-edge engineering and performance while retaining just enough traditional authentic styling and bad-ass details to satisfy die-hard fans of the so-called original “G Wagon.” The overall design and sitting position is still straight-up-and-down; expect high-axle ground clearance of 9.5 inches, almost 29 inches of water-fording clearance, steep approach and departure angles, and, heck, even the spare tire is bolted right where it should be, on the outside of the rear gate. Take all those legitimate, heritageinspired off-road details and stir in state-of-the-art suspension, three differential locks, LED lighting, the latest driver-assist technology, upgraded leather interior detailing for a larger, more passenger-friendly tub, and more. Mate all that to a glorious 4.0-liter biturbo V8 and slick 9G-TRONIC next-gen transmission tuned for off-roading, and well....who needs pavement? mbusa.com

ADVENTURE, ACTUALLY
Alternative-powered SUVs and smaller sporty crossovers are all well and good, but when the pavement runs out you want something reliable and rugged. Navigator selects a quartet of luxury road warriors that can’t be beaten.

Land Rover Range Rover P615 SV
While the automaker’s more recent next-gen Defender has been dominating its off-road news of late (and the waiting list has started on the planned electric version of the flagship Range Rover), there is something about a full-fuel, full-bred Range Rover that makes you feel unconquerable behind the wheel (like you could drive it through one wall of a 14th Century ruin, out the other wall, dust off the hood, and continue on your way).
Especially in the 2024 release of the Range Rover SV flagship, and particularly in the so-called “P615” engine version (an 8-speed, 4.4-liter turbo-charged V8 delivering 606hp and an 8,200-pound towing capacity) you get the best of three worlds: blazing performance, uncanny off-road tech (think full-time 4WD and descent control, standard), and unmatched comfort via an exceptional 29-speaker Meridian sound system and a plethora of customized options (including a sweet tailgate event suite option). jaguarusa.com
Jeep Grand Wagoneer
For many people, the very concept of off-road luxury begins and ends with one word: Jeep. For 2024, the flagship Jeep Grand Wagoneer sports a Hurricane twin-turbo I-6 510 engine that brings 510hp and 500 lb-ft of torque to your adventure (as well as featuring plenty of room for seven passengers). But telling off-road options and features like the Advanced All-Terrain Group (which bolts on protective steel skid plates for the front axle, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear sway bar), 24 inches of water-fording ability, and three available Quadra-Trac 4x4 systems (which adjust shift patterns, engine output, and torque for optimal traction on rough roads and beyond) let you know this grand SUV can handle whatever you can throw at it. On the comfort side, expect a state-of-the-art heads-up display, 360-degree surround camera, Amazon Fire TV capabilities, and a thrilling McIntosh audio system. jeep.com
Rolls Royce Cullinan
Yes, you can take your Rolls off-road. Especially if your idea of adventure is a nice sundowner cocktail at the top of your local moor, the Cullinan is more than up to both getting you there and providing the needed convenience and comfort for that perfect dusk-hour moment (think bespoke bottle refrigeration and a swanky, fold-out tailgate viewing package, if you so choose). With Rolls-Royce’s famed customization program, every Cullinan has some level of personalization, but an enviable spectrum of color, materials, window visibility/privacy options, interior lighting schemes, and exterior and interior details (from immaculately grained woods, to box-grain leathers, to sumptuous lambswool) are on the table as you create your personal masterpiece. Your Cullinan will truly be yours and yours alone. But all executions of the Rolls-Royce SUV share a buttery-smooth 6.7-liter twin-turbo V12 power plant that pumps out 592 horses, standard AWD, and lightning-fast road-scan-enhanced suspension to ease out the occasional bump and grind of going beyond the pavement. rolls-roycemotorcars.com

With a coastline stretching some 180 miles around its islands, Malta and her sister islands, Gozo and Comino, were seemingly made for the waterborne. Whether you are looking to relax on board, swim and snorkel the crystal blue waters, or discover the archipelago’s unique history, these Maltese Islands have something for everyone.
More than 300 days of sunshine, deep natural harbors, extensive superyacht refit and repair facilities, and fantastic infrastructure make the Maltese islands an ideal gateway to some of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruising grounds. Malta’s historic capital of Valletta has so much to offer that the entire city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the ancient capital of Mdina, the fourth-century Christian burial chambers of St. Paul’s in Rabat, and the pre-historic temples of Hagar Qim and Ggantija, are just a handful of the historical gems found on these islands.
Malta’s coastline is dotted with picturesque fishing villages, grottos, and secluded bays, while the island’s gastronomic scene rivals those of the world’s top culinary capitals. Smaller and quieter than Malta, neighboring Gozo is thought to be the legendary Calypso's Isle of Homer's Odyssey – a peaceful, mystical backwater where Baroque churches and old stone farmhouses dot the countryside. Step back in time as you explore Cittadella atop the ancient fortified capital of Victoria. Back on board, uncover some of the Mediterranean’s best dive sites that lie off Gozo’s rugged coastline, dropping anchor to tender ashore to stunning beaches or through secluded inlets – snaking through coves of deep water edged by high limestone cliffs that lead to pebblestone beaches and underwater caves.
Over on the equally beautiful sister island of Comino, the famed Blue Lagoon boasts clear azure waters, while hidden coves provide the perfect anchorage spots. Wherever you cruise, rest assured the islands’ culinary scene is one of the finest in the Mediterranean, with family-run restaurants serving the freshest, locally-sourced ingredients, plucked straight from the sea or ripened by the Mediterranean sun.

Add in the wellness amenities, including the Imaq indoor pool, Nuan spa, a sauna and the heated Blue Lagoon outdoor pool, and you might well be tempted to spend all of your time lounging around on board rather than exploring. However, well nourished by the wide variety of food available on board – ranging from fine dining at signature restaurant Nuna, serving a contemporary French menu curated by Michelinstarred chef Alain Ducasse, a more casual option at the Grill Restaurant, or the Open-Air Bar – guests will certainly have the energy to take on the adventurous activities on offer, including kayaking, dog sledding, ice fishing, snowshoeing, or even a polar plunge.
Surrounded by such awe-inspiring scenery, guests may inevitably find themselves wanting to learn more. Le Commandant Charcot uniquely offers its guests citizen-science opportunities to participate in research projects, collaborating with a number of visiting scientists busy conducting their polar and climate research in the two onboard laboratories. Capturing the unique environment for posterity, Photo Ambassadors on select expedition itineraries also run photography workshops, allowing guests to record memories of their bucket-list experience.
Le Commandant Charcot is also designed with a strong focus on environmental sustainability and aims to minimize its impact on the fragile polar environments she explores. The ship features a hybrid propulsion system powered by liquefied natural gas and batteries, innovative technologies for waste reduction, and has other green technologies on board including LED lighting and water filtration. PONANT’s commitment to responsible tourism and exploration is a core part of the ship’s design and operation, with the goal of making a positive contribution to the lands and peoples visited while also protecting the sensitive ecosystems.

The Amalfi Coast, Italy
For the Design Lover
A yacht charter can provide the perfect opportunity to soak up some creative inspiration, so if it is an artistic escapade that you are imagining, look to the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Seduced by its combination of glamor, culture, and natural beauty, artists, composers, and writers have been flocking to the delightful colorful towns that hug the coastline for centuries. This achingly beautiful scenery continues to attract visitors from all over the world, and from the decks of a superyacht there is plenty of opportunity to take in Amalfi’s vertiginous coast with its pastel-colored villas suspended over the water and looming cliffs hosting grottoes and caves just waiting to be explored.
The Yacht… The 219’1” (67m) CALEX is available to charter in the Mediterranean this summer season for prices from $680,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.

a long lunch at any of the restaurants that hug the coastline – La Fontelina, Da Luigi, Conca del Sogno, Lo Scoglio, Marinella…
Recommended…
Step ashore and wander through Capri Town, browsing the boutiques that run throughout the tiny cobbled streets. A great place for people watching.

Exumas, The Bahamas
For the Wellness Devotee
Just being on, in or near the water is scientifically proven to have beneficial effects on our health and wellbeing. The ebb and flow of waves on the shore while you relax on the sundeck, the endless arena for watersports to increase fitness levels, the comfort levels for better sleep – when it comes to the ultimate in relaxation and wellness, superyachts deliver everything one could require, and more. A handful of the Northrop & Johnson charter fleet are heading to The Bahamas this summer, all of which offer equal measures of fun and relaxation. Captain Scott Gaffga aboard the 164’ (50m) TCB recommends the Exumas for their incredible range of experiences. “The pristine shallow waters along with the islands’ secluded bays and beaches make for a perfect relaxed itinerary,” he says. “They provide ample opportunities for luxurious spas and fine dining ashore, and amazing snorkeling and scuba diving.”

The Cyclades, Greece
For the Culture Maven
Broaden your horizons with a cultural charter taking in the Greek capital of Athens and the ruins and temples that dot the Cyclades. Spend a few days in Athens discovering some of the world’s oldest landmarks and the city’s vibrant arts scene, before embarking on a charter through the lesser-visited islands of the Cyclades. Venture just a bit further off the well-trodden cruising map and discover a smattering of smaller, more quaint islands with the same charming Cycladic appeal as their mainstay neighbors, but without the crowds and offering some of the richest histories known to man ranging from the massive, gate-like ruins of the unfinished Apollo temple dating back to 530 B.C. on Naxos, to the 15th century Venetian castle on Serifos – seemingly modern in comparison. Diving enthusiasts can also discover a magical underwater world which, aside from its rich underwater biodiversity, is also home to several noteworthy shipwrecks, including the RMS TITANIC's twin sister.
Where… The lesserknown Cycladic islands of Sifnos, Tinos, Folegandros, Kea, Naxos and Serifos, to name just a few of the remote and quaint hidden gems and relics of the ancient world .
Recommended… Step ashore to the small fishing village of Apollonas on the northern side of Naxos to visit the statue of Kouros, a 35’ tall marble statue of Dionysus dating back to the 7th century B.C.

Côte d’Azur, France
For the Culinary Aficionado
The French Riviera cannot be rivaled for a getaway of gastronomic excellence. Tailormade cuisine is an intrinsic part of a superyacht charter, and superyacht guests will be met with a neverending stream of innovative menu choices. While cruising along the French coastline, chefs have their pick of the finest ingredients with local markets selling fresh fish, cheese, bread, fruit, and regional delicacies. Ask the chef aboard your charter yacht if you can join him or her for an early-morning trip to local markets where you can savor every local delicacy, and see, smell, feel, and taste the ingredients that will later be transformed into a gastronomic delight. Dining ashore is also an integral part of any superyacht charter and the coastline is filled with delightful restaurants. From Michelin-starred dining and glamorous beachfront establishments to quaint Provençal cafés, the French Riviera is renowned among foodies for good reason. Senior Charter Broker Fiona Maureso has been based in the South of France for almost 40 years and has organized hundreds of charters in the area. “In terms of highlights, I would recommend the iconic Îles de Lérins, which lie just off Cannes,” says Fiona. “Restaurant La Guérite on Île Sainte Marguerite is well worth a shore visit. I would also ask your charter yacht’s captain to reserve a table for lunch at Le Club 55 on Pampelonne Beach in St. Tropez.”
The Yacht… The 203’5” (62m) SEALION is available for charter in the West Mediterranean this summer season for prices from $480,000, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.
Where… With its infectious joie de vivre, Pampelonne Beach remains the jewel of St. Tropez and gourmands will be delighted by the delectable offerings on the menus at the various beach
clubs along the hippest strip of sand in the world. Club 55, LouLou, La Réserve, Indie, Gigi, Casa Amor, Verde, and Shellona…
Recommended…
The Île Saint-Honorat is the place to head for a peaceful anchorage and lunch ashore. Dine by the water’s edge at La Tonnelle (the restaurant is only open for lunch) on flavorsome Mediterranean cuisine.
New England, USA
For Old School Glamor
Considered by many to be the home of yachting in North America, New England offers the waterborne an appealing summer alternative to the cruising grounds of The Bahamas or Mediterranean. The town of Newport has long been associated with wealthy socialites, having been put on the map in the mid-1800s when the great New York families –the likes of the Astors and Vanderbilts – built their opulent and ornate Newport mansions here. The off-lying islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard have also attracted their own affluent visitors over the years, with John F. Kennedy and J.D. Rockefeller both spending most of their summers sailing in these perennially popular cruising grounds. Very little has changed on these quaint islands as they continue to attract yachting enthusiasts to explore their diverse offerings.
The Yacht… The 157’ (47.85m) NICOLE EVELYN is available to charter in New England this summer season for prices from $165,000, plus expenses, for up to 11 guests.
Where… The entire New England region is appealing to the waterborne – rolling hills, quaint fishing villages, sandy beaches, tiny coves, and small islands play host to award-winning golf
courses and restaurants, and historical interests abound wherever you cruise.
Recommended…
The most popular way to explore the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard is by bicycle –both have charming dedicated cycle paths that trace the coastline and plenty of rental shops if your yacht doesn’t have a bike on board.
Alaska
For the Nature Enthusiast
America’s largest state is a wondrous cruising ground if you love to marvel at the great outdoors. Few places boast such a compelling combination of majestic mountains, glistening icefields, and tree-lined coastline – all set amidst the pulsating rhythm of the Pacific – as Alaska. “SERENGETI’s crew have been cruising these magnificent waters for a number of years and have an in-depth knowledge of the best anchorages,” says Charter Broker Amy Wachmann. “Her ample toy box, including paddleboards, snorkeling and fishing gear, and her 32’ (9.8m) ACI enclosed cabin limo tender (heated), give charterers the opportunity to get even closer to nature.”
The Yacht… The 130’ (39.62m) SERENGETI will be cruising the Alaskan coastline this summer for prices from $150,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.
Where… From Alaska’s capital Juneau, cruise through the twisting Sergius Narrows to Sitka and the Glacier Bay National Park.
Recommended… Tag on a week cruising the Pacific Northwest and spend time around Desolation Sound Marine Park with its islands, numerous bays, and snug coves; swim and dive in the warm waters or step ashore and discover the shaded forested trails.

Paris – Portofino
Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Europe
The train against which all other luxury trains are measured, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is the most iconic locomotive in the world. With its fantasy of 1920s Art Deco design and impeccable service, the Orient Express invites passengers to step back in time to the Golden Age of travel as they are whisked through the French countryside and amidst Swiss mountain scenes to Venice. Firmly ensconced in a class of its own, the impeccable service is akin to that of a superyacht. Bags are whisked off from the platform and magically appear in your cabin; plush carriages are lit by subtle lighting, creating a romantic ambiance as you dine on fine cuisine in the restaurant car or sip on bubbly in the Champagne bar. In 2023, the iconic train re-emerged with luxe updates, including eight new suites – two of which are original 1920s and 30s carriages – restored by expert craftsmen. This year sees new routes added, including the inaugural annual overnight Paris to Portofino coastal journey. Taking in the Mediterranean Riviera and concluding with a few nights ashore at the Splendido in Portofino, after which you can rest assured your next embarkation will be a worthy reflection as you step aboard your charter yacht and head off on a cruise along the Ligurian coast. belmond.com

SCOPE
N&J Marine Partners Division
2024 has been a busy one for Northrop & Johnson’s Strategic Partners team with a number of new partners joining the expanding Marine Partners Division. With IGY Marinas, Newcoast, and Starboard Card firmly at the helm, the spring season saw N&J welcome Legend Yacht Transport into the marine portfolio. Each year, several of the N&J charter and sales fleet head back and forth across the Atlantic to catch the summer season in the Mediterranean and Caribbean in the winter. Transporting these magnificent and valuable vessels can be a complex and logistical challenge, and choosing the right carrier is of vital importance. Legend Yacht Transport’s reputation for reliability is second-to-none.
“As one of the largest yacht transport companies in the world, Legend Yacht Transport has built a reputation for reliable sailings with competitive pricing,” said Northrop & Johnson President & COO
Daniel Ziriakus. “The only downside is how to choose the destination for your next yachting adventure.”
02
Spring Shows
Signaling the start of the year’s show season, the Palm Beach International Boat Show saw yachts from far and wide converging on West Palm Beach in March to display their wares to a high level of serious clients. Among the numerous yachts on display were eleven of Northrop & Johnson’s finest sales offerings, with N&J experts on hand to steer visitors through the yachts and to ensure that both clients and strategic partners experienced the show in VIP style. Lucid Motors provided car transportation to and from the show, and once at the event clients were more than happy to shelter from the rain at Northrop & Johnson’s stand, where Verge Yacht Design furnishings offered luxurious comfort. Clients were also able to enjoy bespoke cocktails from Chopin Imports and a curated tasting experience from Antonius Caviar. Due to the inclement weather on the Friday and Saturday, the social calendar of events was not as planned, however, the annual captains’ celebration did go ahead, hosted in collaboration with our platinum sponsor Isotropic, along with Lumenautica, Chopard, Osiris Club, and Aeré Marine Group. Osiris Club hosted a custom wine-blending activation for clients to experience and learn more about what the members-only wine club has to offer. The N&J teams continued to demonstrate a strong presence in the U.S. at the Newport Beach International Boat Show hosted just a few weeks later, in April. Clients enjoyed the Californian sunshine as they viewed the sales and charter yachts in the show, along with VIP hospitality at the signature stand and a soiree and yacht hop held in collaboration with N&J partners NetJets, Northern Trust, Exclusive Resorts, Impression by Secrets, Airbus, Tim Davis, Starboard Card, Legend Yacht Transport and Newcoast. The show season continued over in the Mediterranean, with the Palma International Boat Show where N&J had a stellar lineup of yachts for sale and charter on display at the Palma Superyacht Village. Experts from the Palma, Antibes, and Monaco offices were kept busy throughout the four-day event, helping clients with all their yachting knowledge.
