FOREWORD
As we move from summer into fall and the smell of sunscreen fades away, here at Northrop & Johnson we are readying ourselves for another season of boat shows and looking forward to finding our clients the yachts and experiences they have worked so hard to deserve.
In this, the annual Brokerage issue of Navigator, we look ahead to the fall boat show season, suggest some new toys you can buy for your yacht, and spotlight the iconic yacht STARFIRE. For our regular Navigator Knows column, we talk to the people propelling our industry into the future with thoughtfulness and zeal – ideas that straddle the realms of design, technology, sustainability, community, and conservation.
Our Cruising Guide covers the fast-growing trend for “3G” (Three Generational) vacations, with great ideas for tailormade charters to suit the whole family. Our experts give their recommendations on their favorite multigeneration cruising grounds and the yachts on which to explore them this winter. Staying in travel but heading towards land, we look at a handful of properties where a stay is actually good for the soul. If solitude and reflection isn’t quite your thing, head to the new Mediterranean hot spot, Lucia Cannes, for a dose of beach club living, or for a quick city break stateside head to the Big Apple. Wherever this fall season takes you, and whoever you choose to spend it with, we hope the following pages provide a little inspiration.

FINANCING YACHT CONSTRUCTION
Fulfill your dream with the right team
WORDS LAURA MANDEL
“Yacht” can mean something different to almost anyone who says it or hears it. From a 440’ (134m) superyacht with global range and two helipads to a 35’ (10.6m) sailboat to take around nearby harbors on summer weekends, one thing all these vessels have in common is owners who prize the freedom and adventure of time spent aboard.
A careful plan with the right team can protect your yacht purchase from unforeseen difficulties while also safeguarding other goals.
Yacht owners tend to be highly financially literate and informed about yachting. Many have boated since childhood and have acquired bigger and more sophisticated vessels as their careers and resources advanced. But there is still a unique emotional element of owning a boat; in the most successful projects, everyone involved shares that passion, delights in digging into the engineering and imagining cruises to the unique destinations that only boats afford. Owners who choose to build a yacht face even more complexity.
“We are helping clients fulfill their dream”, said Burton Gonzell, a senior vice president who handles yacht financing at Northern Trust. “It is a privilege to work together and turn someone's vision into a reality.”
The right team may mean more than a better interest rate or paring weeks from a construction schedule – it may mean the difference between launching your vessel or having the project languish in avoidable disconnects among financiers, shipyards, suppliers and surveyors.
Ownership structure & operating costs
Yachts join aircraft and secondary homes as assets that are often owned by trusts or limited liability companies. These structures introduce specific requirements that can add complexity to plans. It’s not rare for annual operating expenses to reach more than 10 percent of the vessel’s purchase price, so funding those costs while observing the rules of a limited liability company or trust and also preserving other areas of lifestyle spending demands careful planning and attention to detail.
A trustee would be likely to plan for funding the yacht’s operation for the lifetime of the asset and would make sure sufficient liquidity is available when needed. That allocation should be considered in the context of other priorities, such as family members you wish to support, philanthropic intentions and the lifestyle you want to maintain.
A systematic, goals-centered approach to vetting your options will yield the best outcomes for your portfolio and wealth plan. Borrowing rather than liquidating assets can help keep your investment strategy intact by securing the liquidity you need for a yacht purchase while preserving your other goals. Bankers will look for information from you about both your boating history and financial situation.
“We are embarking on a relationship, and that requires good communication and understanding each other,” Gonzell said. “If we are working on a three-year project, we are going to get to know each other pretty well.”
Build the right team
Your crew will comprise much more than the maritime industry professionals responsible for operating your boat and keeping you safe and comfortable. Depending on your ownership structure and the complexity of your plans and vessel, you may have a large team managing many elements of the project on and off the water. From the very start of any new build process, your Northrop & Johnson broker will assist in everything from shipyard selection to yacht designers and the best maritime attorneys. Engaging with a skillful and experienced lender will leave you in a secure position to move forward with your dream. They will be familiar with loans of the scale of a yacht purchase or build, can tailor comprehensive credit solutions and will give guidance on other team members to involve in the process.

BRIGHT IDEAS
Navigator Knows
The people, places, and projects moving the yachting industry into the future
What constitutes a “bright idea” in yachting? Is it building something that has never been done before, something that pushes an existing concept in a totally new direction, something that fundamentally re-frames the ways in which we approach yachting? Or, is it all of the above? Navigator talks to those in the industry who are approaching yachting’s most pressing issues with thoughtfulness and zeal –ideas that straddle the realms of design, technology, sustainability, community, and conservation. From shipyards making strides towards reducing and even eliminating vessel emissions, to designers creating interiors from sustainable materials, to the yachting community initiatives keeping cruising grounds pristine – these are the innovators who are each, in their own way, changing the way we approach yachting, one bright idea at a time.
The Designer
Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design
The yachting industry is made up of several different stripes, a few of whom are trying to bring something new to transform it into a more socially and environmentally responsible pastime. One design studio at the forefront of this drive toward sustainability is Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design (MMYD), whose landmark yachts include the award-winning 196’ (59.7m) SARISSA and the 110’ (33.5m) ZEMI. “Each project that we design is an evolution with continual development and refinement of hull forms, improved efficiency, hydronamics, and weight savings,” says Malcolm McKeon, founder of MMYD.
The 196’ (59.7m) Royal Huisman-built SARISSA has certainly received extensive recognition since her delivery in 2023, taking seven Neptune trophies, including Sailing Yacht of the Year at the recent 2024 World Superyacht Awards, as well as the Eco Award and Innovation of the Year at the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards earlier in the year. Leading the MMYD team in the design of SARISSA, Malcolm worked closely with an owner who pushed the project to its full potential. “The yacht really embodies the client’s brief in every way,” says Malcolm. “The outcome is an incredibly powerful sailing yacht with exceptional performance and minimal environmental impact.” It seems the success of the MMYD studio is partly
due to its dedication to a more client-centered design. “First and foremost, every design is completely custom, fully bespoke and very much driven at its heart by the client - we develop the concept with them,” explains Malcolm. “Many of our clients recognize the environmental advantage of a sailing yacht, indeed it’s often part of its attraction for them, and because of this enthusiasm they can be instrumental in developing new technologies.” As a result of demand from their clients, MMYD have already introduced a number of fuel-efficient ideas in their designs to reduce emissions and running costs and continue to research new ideas all the time. In addition to supporting these new technologies, MMYD’s innovative designs are nature-focused and also include more open-plan interiors and outdoor spaces dedicated to living by the water’s edge. “SARISSA is a great example of how we’ve tried to innovate in the usability side of things – the aft section opens to reveal a large beach club, which hosts a bar, seating area, and sauna,” says Malcolm. “The carbon beach club door is really an engineering marvel, literally doubling the size of the platform to an impressive 20m².” With several projects under construction and new and exciting designs on the drawing board, the future certainly looks bright for the awardwinning MMYD studio. malcolmmckeonyachtdesign.com

The Yacht
ZERO
Yachts powered by wind energy alone have been around for centuries – they have crossed oceans and circumnavigated the world under sail for hundreds of years without needing any fossil fuels at all. However, today’s superyachts, whether motor or sail, use diesel generators to produce their electrical power and therefore also require fossil fuels to power just about everything on board, from air conditioning to navigation and audio visual, even to the electric winches used to raise the sails on a modern sailing yacht. A fossil fuel-free superyacht may therefore appear a long way off, but the groundbreaking sailing yacht ZERO, which is scheduled for delivery in 2025, aims to prove that more sustainable luxury yachting isn’t just a pipe dream. Developed by a dream team of experts from various fields both within the yachting industry and outside, the entire philosophy is to develop a solution for change through collaboration and information sharing, and by showing the industry that yachting really can be made more sustainable.
Dutch shipyard Vitters and Dykstra Naval Architects, along with Dutch design studio Vripack Yacht Design, are the panel of yachting experts involved in the inception of the sailing yacht ZERO. Having all worked previously on other groundbreaking yachting innovations, the team tested various configurations, aided by physicists and data analysts. “We have researched various ways of powering a yacht from hydrogeneration and solar energy,” says Marnix J. Hoekstra, Partner and Co-Creative Director at Vripack. “Hydrogeneration may not be new, but to operate a yacht on sun, wind, and water and using sustainable materials alone is a radical new concept.” The resulting 226’ (68.9m) performance ketch ZERO will also use solar energy to run the hotel load, topped up with hydrogeneration. “This has constraints on the yacht’s operational profile, but it is, in theory, something that can be used on board any vessel and this is the whole point of the R&D work into renewable energy, which ultimately will be published by the technology platform foundationzero.org,” explains Marnix. Indeed, in line with Foundation Zero’s mission, all data will be made available through open source to those who are interested and for all to benefit from – ultimately contributing to a positive change in the maritime industry. “It starts with imagining what is possible,” says Marnix. foundationzero.org
The Destination
Sindalah
Just eight years ago, the announcement of Saudi Arabia’s futuristic flagship project NEOM seemed to be a destination of the distant future, but as we write halfway through 2024 the architectural and infrastructural undertakings to build four unique regions are already well underway. Strategically located just a day’s cruising from the Mediterranean Sea, the visionary luxury island development, Sindalah, is due to welcome its first guests later this year. One of NEOM’s four luxury destinations occupying a substantial corner of Saudi Arabia, Sindalah’s development opens up the Red Sea as an alluring cruising ground, potentially offering a new winter season location for the superyacht set. Northrop & Johnson’s partner IGY Marinas is responsible for Sindalah Marina, offering 86 berths for yachts up to 164’ (50m) and additional serviced offshore buoys for superyachts up to 590’ (180m).
Sindalah Marina is the closest ultra-prime superyacht marina to Europe and the Mediterranean, highlighting NEOM’s ambition to become a world leader in luxury tourism and yachting experiences in the Red Sea region. “The addition of Sindalah
Marina to the IGY global marina network provides superyacht owners, captains, and charter guests access to an unrivaled new destination aligned with an entirely new yachting season,” says Steve English, President of IGY Marinas. “Superyachts visiting Sindalah will enjoy a redefined luxury experience, with premium hotels, retail offerings, culinary dining, and an amazing golf experience.”
Further afield, NEOM itself covers an area of approximately 10,200 square miles, which includes everything from mountain ranges and desert landscapes to coastal regions ripe for exploration by yacht. The waters are home to over 2,000 marine species, 600 of which are endemic to the Red Sea and cannot be found anywhere else in the world, while on land its landscape offers endless vistas with rich red sands, craggy mountains, and valleys populated with native wildlife. NEOM has also pledged to preserve 95 percent of the region’s land and sea for conservation – a vision of what the future of tourism might look like, perhaps? neom.com

Proper & continued planning
Effective wealth planning is critical to preserving your wealth for your lifetime and that of your successors. In recent decades, research has appeared that proves the tendency of great wealth to fail to survive beyond the third generation. While wealth can be exposed to many circumstances beyond your control, such as volatile markets and evolving tax and legal regimes, there are many unintended consequences that can often be avoided.
Putting off creating a wealth plan or starting too late can often result in potentially higher tax liabilities, inheritance disputes, less flexibility, and additional expenses. Ultimately, this leads to asset depletion and administrative delays in the fulfilment of your wishes. Early and regular reviews of your wealth plan can help establish whether your current plan is aligned with your objectives, uncovering possible risks, and pursuing new potential opportunities in changing environments and personal circumstances.
Special assets
It is also important to consider your unique assets. From closely held business interests, real estate, art collections, aircraft and yachts, specialized management can help ensure smooth transitions to intended beneficiaries, seek tax efficiencies and ensure adequate insurance to preserve long-term value.
Navigating complexities
While preserving your wealth and legacy isn’t straightforward, added complexities such as involving multiple jurisdictions requires special attention. Investing internationally could mean you are exposed to foreign tax and regulatory requirements. For example, a non-US person with beneficiaries or assets located in the US can face complex federal and tax implications. Working with wealth planners who recognize and understand jurisdictional issues can be beneficial, alongside independent legal and tax advisors.
Citi Private Bank is among the few organizations that has the global reach, experience and resources to assist you in creating a dynamic plan that helps ensure your wealth and legacy are preserved.

Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea
An oasis in the truest sense of the word, Six Senses made its Saudi debut in the desert with the opening of its heritage resort – Southern Dunes. Part of The Red Sea Resort, which will extend to 10,800 square miles along the Saudi Arabian coastline, the Six Senses is the ideal first of the many properties to open in the sustainable luxury tourism destination. It couldn’t be more apt a duo, given Six Senses’ nature-first approach. The unique Alnesai desert property was designed by Foster + Partners, whose 36 guest rooms and 40 dune-hugging villas are both out of the ordinary while still seamlessly blending into the landscape. The brand’s wellness formula is embodied throughout the resort, with the spa, gym, pools, and the ample Arabic activities on offer in the sweeping desert dunes that surround the property. sixsenses.com

Purer Shores
The Potlatch Club, Eleuthera
The Bahamas may be flush with new hotel arrivals, but this summer there was an extra focus on the island of Eleuthera – the birthplace of The Bahamas. Following a seven-year restoration, The Potlach Club is the island’s first truly luxury boutique hotel. A former private home that was frequented by New York socialites and silver-screen legends, the likes of Greta Garbo and Rita Gam during the 1960s and 70s, the property fell into disrepair until its new owners came on board in 2016. What they have created along the seven-mile deserted stretch of pink-sand beach is an oceanfront escape where coastal elegance meets Caribbean charm. Paying homage to the property’s storied pass, the original clubhouse remains, while a mix of historic and newly built suites, cottages, and villas are dotted around 12 acres of landscaped gardens. thepotlatchclub.com
03 Fresh Revival
Cape Grace, South Africa
The smart crowd have set their sights on Cape Town’s treasured hotel Cape Grace, which has opened after nine months of renovations. Unveiling a new design, the iconic waterfront property opened its doors in the spring with a new look inspired by South Africa’s heritage, culture, and artistry. South Africa’s array of landscapes, diverse languages, vibrant art scene, and rich cultures make for a diverse narrative that interior designers have interpreted throughout each of the 112 rooms and suites. Featuring large French windows or balconies, each room offers views of either the waterfront marina or the iconic Table Mountain. The Fairmont Spa has also been revamped, along with additions to the culinary offerings, including the new restaurant, Heirloom. capegrace.com
Singita Comes Full Circle
Singita Ebony Lodge & Singita Milele
Singita’s founding lodge in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve unveiled a new look that both honors the origin of the Singita story while meeting the changing needs of modern guests. At the heart of Singita Ebony Lodge is a new Conservation Room where guests can enjoy food and drinks while learning more about the 30-year history of Singita, the biodiversity of the region, and the work of the Singita Lowveld Trust – Singita’s conservation partner in South Africa. The main lodge also houses a new informal lodge and a wine cellar that leads out onto a deck area overlooking the Sand River. Cécile & Boyd, who were responsible for the project, also redesigned the 14 suites – all of which feature a private plunge pool.
Spring also saw Singita expand in Tanzania with the opening of Singita Milele. Part of the Singita Private Villa Collection, this one-of-a-kind private villa is perfect for families or friends traveling together, offering accommodations for up to 10 guests in five suites. Private Jacuzzis, expansive decks, and views over the Serengeti plains are just part of the property. A fitness studio, infinity pool, and movie room add to guest facilities. Designed to minimize the barriers between guests and nature, the property sits within 350,000 acres of pristine wilderness in Singita Grumeti, in northern Tanzania. singita.com
An Icon Reborn
Royal Mansour Casablanca
The unmitigated glamour of the rebuilt Royal Mansour Casablanca encapsulates timeless elegance with modern luxury. Occupying the site of the former Art Deco landmark, the Le Royal Mansour Méridien, which made its iconic debut in 1953, the Royal Mansour Casablanca is the real deal. After eight years of restoration, the property is flaunting a fresh take on Casablanca’s mid-century glamor. With some of the original hotel’s most iconic details reinterpreted for the modern day – Carrera marble surfaces, inlaid wood paneling, rich fabrics, and brass accents – the contemporary Royal Mansour Casablanca doesn’t shy away from the hotel’s storied past. A striking staircase near the bar is a nod to the original spiral staircase where the likes of Muhammad Ali and Sean Connery were photographed back in the day. Located in the heart of the White City, the 149 rooms, suites, and private apartments (including the largest suites in town spanning up to 12,800 square feet), along with four restaurants and a two-story, 27,000-foot wellness oasis, make this renewed icon the best in town.

Barrett-Jackson Fall Scottsdale Car Auction
WestWorld, Scottsdale, AZ
October 10-13, 2024
For car auctions, this is one of the big ones! BarrettJackson’s Fall Scottsdale happening has a reputation not only as one of the ne plus ultra events for vintage autos, but also as one of the purest: pure auctions for pure collectors and vintage fans, full stop. While the lots for October were still being assembled at press time, some highlights from the winter Scottsdale auction include: an immaculate 1957 Lincoln Continental Mark II Custom Coupe dubbed “Cashmere” that fetched $750,000; a gleaming 1967 Chevy Corvette 427/435 coupe nicknamed “The Desert Rat” that found a new owner for $256,000; and a 1965 Superformance MKIII Cobra Roadster with the moniker “The Italian Job,” which hammered out at $242,000. Sotheby’s Hong Kong
Important Watches II
Hong Kong
September 30 - October 9, 2024
The summer watch auctions in Geneva and New York tend to define the collector climate for fans of superb vintage wrist watches. If this summer’s hammer prices are any indication, final sales prices are all over the place, with nose-bleed-level figures being fairly common. For many collectors, auctions taking place in Hong Kong have provided a relative antidote, providing for more rational collecting, and Sotheby’s is on the top of its game in that arena. While lots are still being compiled for this fall’s event (which is thankfully both live and online), Sotheby’s Hong Kong watch auctions this past spring yielded uncharacteristically sane results: A platinum A. Lange & Sohne Datograph Flyback estimated to fetch as much as $64,000, hammered out a bit over that at $68,000 (still a relative bargain in this market). A fun Graham Chronofighter limited edition steel “nose art” watch was estimated to bring in $5,000, and went for a little over $2,700. But those relative bargains might not last forever. sothebys.com

Hermès Cut
A strong timepiece investment doesn’t always have to engender stratospheric original prices to hold or grow value. Especially if a new model’s first offering helps define a specific kind of watch. The watch industry has struggled to move watch design into a more unisex region, with varying degrees of success. It took the fashion house of Hermès to set a new high bar in this area. At 36mm, the new Cut line certainly plays in a universally wrist-friendly size arena. Adorned with diamonds, the feminine appeal is instantly apparent (but not overwhelming), and in unadorned metal-on-metal bracelet or rubber strap, the Cut can be either sleek and elegant, or handsome and interesting, depending on who is wearing it. hermes.com QUALITY TIME

Gérald Genta
Gentissima Oursin
For those not obsessed with watches, late designer Gérald Genta was a superhero in the industry. Before he passed in 2011, he designed some of the most iconic watches ever (Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak, Omega’s Constellation, and Patek Philippe’s Nautilus among them). His own eponymous brand is now in the loving hands of LVMH, and watch fans have been eagerly awaiting the first fruits of that relationship. Voila, the exquisite, voluptuous Gentissima Oursin, a watch first released by Genta in the 1990s but thoughtfully re-envisioned in a more gender-neutral form for today. geraldgenta.com
Portugieser Eternal Calendar
Getting into a truly serious, industry-advancing watch can yield some impressive investment potential, and IWC’s astounding take on a perpetual calendar watch is nothing but serious. Did you know that occasionally, years that should be leap years mathematically are sometimes skipped for ultimate sidereal accuracy? The next time that will happen is the year 2100. IWC’s exquisite Portugieser Eternal Calendar automatically accounts for skipped leap years until the year 3999, and its moon phase function will only need a one-day adjustment over the next 45 million years. iwc.com
Chopard
Mille Miglia Classic JX7 Arguably, no other timepiece captures the intersection of automotive style and haute horological derring-do than Chopard’s Mille Miglia. This JX7 chronograph model, debuted in the spring, is the watchmaker’s seventh collaboration with Belgian racing legend Jacky Ickx, but there are details here that just might make it the best so far (and it won’t be available forever). To add to the potential collector appeal, only 250 editions will be produced in steel, and only 50 will be created with yellow gold. The case back carries an engraving of Ickx’s fabled two-visor “owl” racing helmet. chopard.com

The ACJ TwoTwenty brings this vision to life, offering a travel experience that perfectly balances business and relaxation. With an expansive cabin, best-in-class connectivity, exceptional operating costs and intercontinental range, this jet is an HQ in the skies that enhances productivity and comfort at every altitude.
Unmatched Personal Space
Boasting 786 square feet of cabin space, the ACJ TwoTwenty doubles the size of its similarly priced competitors. Its six large VIP zones are crafted for those who value time, comfort, and freedom. Whether it’s a serene bedroom with a king-sized bed for a transatlantic rest, a gourmet dining area with a chef’s galley, or a state-of-the-art boardroom for critical decisions, the ACJ TwoTwenty offers room to live and work.
Ultra-high-speed Connectivity
In today's business landscape, constant connectivity is vital. The ACJ TwoTwenty not only meets current connectivity needs but will soon offer even greater performance with the upcoming ACJ Connect Link upgrade. This enhancement will provide up to 195Mbps of bandwidth—ten times the speed of current solutions—ensuring high-speed, reliable internet access for multiple devices. It will support 4K video conferencing, high-definition streaming, and live TV, making it ideal for any business or personal needs.
Unbeatable Economics
And while its size and comfort may suggest otherwise, the aircraft comes with an impressive fiscal edge: a competitive purchase price and up to 30% lower operating costs than competitor aircraft—facts any CFO would appreciate. Moreover, as with all ACJ aircraft, it expects twice the residual value retention—a testament to its enduring appeal in an evolving market.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Airbus is committed to leading the decarbonization of the aviation sector. Through the integration of advanced materials and enhanced fuel efficiency, the ACJ TwoTwenty reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 20% compared to previous-generation aircraft. Additionally, it is capable of operating with up to a 50% blend of kerosene and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) while keeping to the technical specifications of Jet A. SAF is a biofuel that can help reduce CO2 emissions by 80% on average throughout its lifecycle.
Meeting the Needs of the Modern Executive
The ACJ TwoTwenty redefines what it means to travel for business. With unprecedented cabin space, advanced connectivity, competitive operating costs, and world-class dispatch reliability, modern executives can be where it matters, when it matters.

SHARING THE SKIES
One of the most significant decisions when choosing private flight solutions is which one?
WORDS DOUG GOLLAN
Principally, there are four options for flying private. You can charter on a trip-by-trip basis. You can buy access via jet cards and memberships. You can buy your own aircraft. Or, sitting somewhere between owning the entire airplane and the other choices is fractional ownership.
In essence, fractional ownership means you buy a slice of an aircraft, but the provider then guarantees you access to your aircraft type across its fleet and takes care of the flying. Most fractional programs also enable you to access their entire fleet of different aircraft types; however, that access is only sometimes guaranteed, and there can be extra fees, typically referred to as interchange fees.
Fractional operators typically have standard configurations for a specific aircraft type, which provides a consistent experience for shareowners. While fractional operators do have to go off-fleet at times to fulfill owner flights, typically, 95 percent of flights are on the operator fleet. This is appealing to those of you who have a bias for flying on aircraft operated by the provider instead of brokered aircraft.
There are a wide variety of options on the fractional ownership market. In the U.S. and Europe, PlaneSense and Jetfly offer the Pilatus PC-12 turboprop and PC-24 jet, innovative Swiss-made aircraft noted for their large cargo doors and ability to land on short and grass runways. At the other end of the spectrum, NetJets and Flexjet will allow you to own a piece of ultralong-range jets that can fly 14 hours nonstop such as the Bombardier Global 7500 or the Gulfstream G650, respectively. Between that you will find options covering the HondaJet, top-selling Embraer Phenom 300 light jet and midsize Praetor 500, and Bombardier’s super-midsize Challenger 3500, plus a host of Citation aircraft from Textron Aviation. In other words, there is no shortage of choices.
A primary benefit of fractional ownership is the ability to fly on relatively short notice (anywhere from 10 to 48 hours, and only pay for the time you are in the aircraft, not the repositioning flights) as long as you are traveling within what’s called the primary service area, a specified geographic region that varies by aircraft type. It also means you can cancel or change your flights on similar notice, giving you the flexibility you get when you own an airplane.
Unlike owning your own airplane, however, you don’t have to worry about hiring pilots, complying with regulations, obtaining landing slots in Ibiza during the summer, or sourcing a replacement aircraft when a mechanical issue occurs. Fractional providers handle the management – you pay a
monthly fee to cover those expenses – and guarantee a replacement aircraft at your original contracted price if the first aircraft can’t fulfill the flight. When you charter one-off, you get a requote and can pay much more at the last minute.
Fractional owners using their shares for business travel can also gain tax benefits. Consulting with an experienced business aviation attorney is highly recommended if it’s your first time considering fractional ownership. They can guide you on what aspects of the contracts can be negotiated and the best way to structure your acquisition.
A last aspect to consider is what happens when your contract is over. The provider repurchases your share at what is referred to as residual value. This means you won’t know the final fully loaded hourly cost until you sell your share back, typically after a five-year term. That’s because the residual value in most programs is determined by the value of that aircraft type and your specific airframe at the time. Fractional aircraft that fly 1,000 hours per year will hold a different value than a single-owner aircraft of the same vintage that was flown 200 hours per year.
Another consideration is preowned fractional programs – an increasing segment in which the pitch is that you are buying an airplane that has already been largely depreciated. Of course, that also means little value may be left when you sell.
Private Jet Card Comparisons enables subscribers to compare fractional programs against jet cards and memberships on an apples-to-apples basis, even allowing you to vary the residual value based on your own crystal ball.
Before you get too excited about fractional ownership, keep in mind that, for the most part, programs require you to buy a share that equates to 50 hours of flying per year. While you can exit early, there are penalties, so fractional ownership works best if you fly at least 50 hours per year in the type of aircraft you buy and you anticipate those flying patterns will remain similar for the next five years.
In other words, before you buy a fractional share, get expert advice and make sure you are ready for the commitment.
Doug Gollan is Editor-in-Chief of Private Jet Card Comparisons, a consumer’s guide to fractional, jet card, membership, and jet sharing program that compares over 80 providers and more than 1,000 options.

KEEP ON (LUXURY) TRUCKING!
Winter is fast approaching, which means exciting rough-weather ranch and ski excursions in the northern climes and maybe some luxury “glamping” and recreational boating where the sun still shines. GMC Hummer EV Edition 1
While the full-EV SUV and truck models from Rivian (featured in past issues of Navigator) are taking the headlines lately, last year’s re-envisioning of GMC’s notorious Hummer vehicle in a full-EV pick-up form proves there is more than one game in town for heavy-duty electrification. Although there is no model-year update for 2024 and the bed on the Hummer EV might be a bit smaller than your typical full-duty truck, this sleek military-inspired monster more than makes up for all that in sheer visual badass-ness and smart battery technology (after a $2.2 billion investment from GMC). An edgy Ultium 24-module battery system powers three electric motors with optimized driving modes to extend battery life while providing commanding on-and off-road performance. And all in a fast-charge approach that will get you back on (or off) the road quickly. gmc.com
2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R
If you consider a luxury vehicle to be anything over a $70K price tag, then a loaded-up Ford F-150 pick-up might be one of the best-selling luxury vehicles in the country. The lean-and-mean F-150 Raptor R starts in the low six figures. But, however you outfit your Dearborn-built monster, you can expect some bragging rights to ride along with you. Starting with a high-output 5.2-liter supercharged overhead-cam V8 engine that generates 720 horses and 720 pound-feet of torque and ending with forged aluminum bead-lock wheels with top-of-line BF Goodrich All-Terrain rubber, this five-seater can’t be beat. ford.com
2024 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX
Full diesel or fuel V8 power may traditionally define a high-performance truck, but this year’s new Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX, equipped with a twin-turbo 24-valve V6 power plant and a Dual VVT-i hybrid system, makes a strong case for smaller displacement married to electric push. The approach generates 437hp and an impressive 583 pound-feet of torque as low as 2,400rpm. Under 20 miles an hour, the i-FORCE MAX operates purely electrically, with the thrumming gasoline engine kicking in at higher speeds. While towing, the two systems work together organically, providing a strong one-two punch for the extra power needed for hauling. toyota.com

2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD
Chevrolet’s top-of-line Silverado HD pick-up, with a powerful 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 engine with more horsepower (470hp) and torque (975 pound-feet) than ever and a slick Allison 10-speed transmission standard this year, certainly presents a big dose of power to match its impressive profile and presence. The list of features and options is equally impressive, but consider the latest version of Chevy’s uncanny Transparent Trailer technology, which digitally stitches together 14 camera views and automatically edits out whatever you are hauling to give you an unobstructed rear view of the road. chevrolet.com

The Bahamas
One of the chief reasons The Bahamas has been written about so much as a cruising ground for superyachts is that, in many respects, it is the perfect destination for a foray into the tropics. The water can be bathtub warm and binocular clear. Safe, protected anchorages number in the dozens while long chains of barrier islands mean calm, worry-free passages, not to mention that the local populace are known for their hospitality.
Clustered in distinct groups, with a few drifting loners, The Bahamas comprises some 700 islands and cays. Where to start, quite literally, can be baffling. Just how far do you go to ensure you get the best of the islands? Fortunately, both nature and the practicalities of cruising help to narrow down your choices, leaving you with the cream of the crop in the form of the Abacos and Exumas. There are also a few more remote islands for those with an eye for adventure and the time to prolong their cruise. Most charters begin and end in Nassau, whisking you through the Exumas and often being extended a few days to encompass Harbour Island and Eleuthera.
Nassau is the main hub for international flights to The Bahamas, with fast, connecting flights to dozens of Out Islands and private charter services readily available. For those traveling by private jet, there are 20 airports of entry in The Bahamas, with FBOs dotted throughout the archipelago. With just an hour flight time from Florida, or two from New York, The Bahamas provides not just a playground for yacht vacations, but some great marinas for home berthing. The islands are home to over 30 marinas with berths for yachts over 78' (24m), including Atlantis Marina, Albany Marina, Hurricane Hole Superyacht Marina, Nassau Yacht Haven in Nassau and Paradise Island, Staniel Cay Yacht Club and Norman’s Cay Marina in the Exumas, and Walker’s Cay Marina and Baker’s Bay Golf & Ocean Club in the Abacos, to name just a few. All of these larger marinas have provisioning services, while a number have boat yards for repairs and maintenance. Added to this, the plethora of high-end resorts, with championship golf, restaurants and more, have brought The Bahamas into the mainstream, making it the go to destination for superyacht owners and charterers year-round.

It may be too late to see Japan’s cherry blossoms this year, but if Japan is on your destination dream list, the land of the Rising Sun has plenty to offer and is worth a visit in 2025. Its charming character blends the past and future, casting a spell on all visitors. From friendly locals to mouthwatering cuisine and iconic temples and shrines, Japan’s culture is breathtaking, equalled only by the country’s natural scenery that comes alive in the spring with the cherry blossom, and again in the fall when the leaves transform into full color. Both these periods make for a wonderful backdrop everywhere you go, but given that Japan is made up of four main islands and more than 3,000 smaller islands, where is best to visit? Toyko is a must, and is one of the best places to witness the cherry blossoms. Keep in mind, though, that cherry blossom season in Japan lasts for just a few weeks when they are in full bloom. The first sighting usually takes place in February in the southernmost parts of Japan, moving north and arriving around Tokyo and Kyoto between late March and early April. With visitor levels still below where they were pre-pandemic, visit soon to avoid the crowds.

The first safari is one of those long-anticipated moments. Frequently lauded as the ideal first-time safari destination and home to the Big Five, Kenya is the undisputed wildlife capital of the world. If seeing elephants, rhinos, and prides of lions in their natural habitat is on your bucket list, a game drive through Tsavo and Masai Mara, two of the country’s legendary National Parks, is a must. Learn about local conservation efforts that help protect the wildlife, or even join anti-poaching units on patrol. Support local communities, visit a Maasai village and even enroll in Maasai Warrior School and master the skills of archery and spear throwing. Once the Big Five have been ticked off, delight in the smaller details and travel by foot, horseback, or mountain bike, returning to the luxury comforts of your lodge or camp for a night of stargazing beneath the wide-open skies.

If giant tortoise and blue-footed boobies are on your bucket list, the incredible and diverse plant and animal species make the Galápagos Islands another must for nature lovers. The stunning archipelago off the coast of Ecuador is best explored by yacht, so you can take in as many breathtaking landscapes and animals as possible during your trip. Unknown to the world until the 16th century and untouched by humans, the islands’ flora and fauna and surrounding marine life thrived by evolving into unique species unlike anywhere else in the world. Beyond these otherworldly species are beautiful beaches, surrounding waters inviting out-of-this world scuba diving and snorkeling that make the Galápagos a once-in-a-lifetime cruising ground.

GROUP THERAPY
CRUISING GUIDE
WORDS MIRIAM CAIN
There are few forays as fun as chartering a yacht and filling it with family of different generations experiencing unforgettable activities together. Across the pond the latest term for this fast-growing trend is “3G” (ThreeGenerational) vacations, but here we have christened it “togethering”. These are tailor-made charters to suit the whole family with a perfect combination of relaxation, adventure, and culture. Northrop & Johnson’s experts give their recommendations on their favorite multi-generation cruising grounds and the yachts on which to explore them this winter.
British Virgin Islands
Castaway Caribbean
A luxury yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands works well because of the excellent range of activities to suit all. Legend has it that Robert Louis Stevenson used Norman Island as the setting for his classic seafaring novel, Treasure Island, which seems likely, given that many real pirates, including the infamous Blackbeard himself, used the islands, rocks, and cays that make up the BVIs as a hideout. Following the trade winds, the buccaneers would find a calm anchorage and hide in the lush hillsides. Today the trade winds bring a different type of seafarer to discover a treasure trove of dive sites. From shallow reefs to shipwrecks, there is something to suit all levels. At Salt Island, your diminutive Jacques Cousteau will find the RMS Rhone a spectacular wreck dive, while the underwater landscape of the Alice In Wonderland coral reef is perfect for novice and intermediate divers.
You must try… The archipelago’s trademark Painkiller cocktail.
Children will love… Piratethemed treasure hunts on the original Treasure Island.
Everyone will enjoy… The short passages between islands.
The Yachts… SEALION
With a fantastic track record for successful family charters, SEALION is a fabulous playground for all ages. Not only does she have a great array of watersports equipment, the split-level sundeck spans nearly half the yacht’s length, providing ample space for the entire family to relax and spend quality time together, perhaps in the oversized 12-person Jacuzzi.
The 203’5” (62m) SEALION is available to charter in the Caribbean for prices from $480,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.
LADY KATHRYN V Alternatively, the equally popular LADY KATHRYN V is perfect for multigenerational charters. Her dynamic and flexible layout includes a VIP suite on the bridge deck, master on the main, and four double cabins at the waterline. The master suite is the pinnacle of luxury living with a private sea terrace, master salon, and separate office, allowing for privacy when required.
The 200’ (61m) LADY KATHRYN V is available to charter in the Caribbean for prices from $450,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.

The Grenadines
The perfect scene
The Grenadines are one of the all-time favorite cruising grounds, thanks in no small part to the choice of islands that appeal to all generations. The older family members will love soaking up the chic island of Mustique, while the more restless members of the group can enjoy the Tobago Cays, where the calm waters protected by the horseshoe reef are perfect for snorkeling and diving. With 32 islands and cays, there is a wide range of activities to suit all, from swimming, fishing, diving, and exploring the islands on foot, to simply doing nothing at all.
The Yachts… IMPROMPTU
Discover the tranquil shores of the Grenadines in luxury and comfort aboard the 164’1” (50m) IMPROMPTU. Her toy chest is designed for guests of all ages. For thrill-seekers, experience the exhilaration of IMPROMPTU’s two 3-Person Yamaha VX Cruiser waverunners, complete with built-in Bluetooth sound systems. Alternatively, try the SeaBobs or the superfast Lift Electric Hydrofoils. For those seeking relaxation, unwind in the safety and comfort of jellyfish net loungers at the floating beach club. And for added fun, there's even a water slide. IMPROMPTU is available to charter in the Caribbean for prices from $275,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.
SEA OWL*
Another superb yacht cruising the Grenadines is the 203’5” (62m) SEA OWL. Her flexible accommodation includes two cabins on the lower deck that are perfect for children or grandchildren
as they can be combined into a spacious bunk room. A large master stateroom and three VIP suites, each with their own distinctive theme, invite guests to join the fantasy, from masquerade balls to pirate adventures. An extra cabin is available for nannies, additional staff, family, or friends, while the bridge deck classroom features a hidden Murphy bed for extra versatility. She also boasts an elevator that serves all her decks. SEA OWL is available to charter in the Caribbean for prices from $460,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.
Hurricane Beryl
At the time of going to press, recovery efforts on the islands after Hurricane Beryl are still ongoing. However, the islands are very keen to welcome back tourists and all of the main resorts and beaches are open for business. There are several ways guests can contribute to the rebuilding of the islands through contributions, speak to your broker for more details.

The Bahamas
Vibrant cruising grounds
The Bahamas deserve their moment in the ultimate-luxury cruising ground spotlight thanks to their plethora of fun, family-friendly activities. From crystal clear waters for snorkeling, to coral walls for diving, and hundreds of islands (700plus) for kayaking, they offer the waterborne a wealth of choice. They are also renowned for their deep-sea fishing, while white sand beaches and nature reserves entice charterers ashore. What is best, though, is their close proximity to each other, making them ideal for charters with younger children.
The Yachts… COFINA*
Space is arguably the most coveted luxury aboard a yacht, and in this regard, the 132’7” (40.42m) COFINA provides the perfect base for a multigenerational charter. She offers six staterooms for up to 12 guests – more than most yachts in her size range – with a variety of easily converted cabins for children and nannies. Her toy collection includes a 37’ Grady White with triple 425hp Yamaha outboards that is fully rigged for fishing. COFINA* is available to charter in The Bahamas for prices from $145,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.
TCB
The experienced and well-regarded crew aboard TCB includes the charter savvy Captain Scott Gaffga. With his in-depth experience and knowledge of The Bahamas, charter guests are treated to the best anchorages in The Exumas. This comes in useful when looking for a quiet spot to use TCB’s impressive array of toys, which include children’s water skis with a full docking system. The 164’ (50m) TCB is available to charter in The Bahamas for prices from $215,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 11 guests.
Costa Rica
DIscover the Rich Coast
Costa Rica is the spiritual home of adrenalininducing activities and amazing wildlife, making it a sure winner for an unforgettable vacation. With some of the most biodiverse waters on the planet and a pristine coastline, Costa Rica will keep all ages entertained. Some members of the family can head to the reggae beach bars, while others can raft through white water rapids or zipline over the jungle. If this all sounds too much, a gentle hike and a dip beneath the waterfall pools will appeal to all the family.
The Yacht…
EL REY

The Leeward Islands
Chic and glamorous cruising
With their beautiful coastlines and great selection of yachts, the Leeward Islands are a firm favorite for a 3G vacation. From exploring the islands’ maritime history with many manmade sites from the colonial days with the grandparents, to discovering dramatic scenery, fantastic beaches, and catching up with friendly locals, there’s something to please everyone here. Chill out on a deserted beach or on deck while the more active members of the family (whatever generation this may be) can snorkel and swim. The waters are teaming with exotic fish and colorful coral, while the beach bars make for a fun evening ashore.
The Yachts… LA BLANCA*
With copious deck spaces and an inviting interior, LA BLANCA is the perfect viewing platform from which to witness the Caribbean. Providing an experience akin to that of a guest at a seven-star hotel that just happens to be at sea, her style is elegant and sumptuous. For family vacations, her expansive sundeck is undoubtedly her most striking stand-out feature, with its 15-seater Jacuzzi complete with swim-up bar. The 196’ (59m) LA BLANCA is available to charter in the Caribbean for prices from $395,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.

The beach club is undoubtedly the highlight, offering easy access to water activities and a large swim platform for assembling water toys. With so many sights, neighborhoods, restaurants, theaters, shops, and museums, it’s difficult to get bored in Manhattan. From Matisse at MoMA to the storied department stores of Fifth Avenue, this is the best of its world-leading scene.
NEW YORK
TERRA FIRMA
Contenders come and go, but New York is hard to top as one of the world’s most inspiring city breaks. Navigator pounds the streets to bring you the very best of what to do, where to eat, party, and sleep in the city that could fill a hundred city breaks.
WORDS MIRIAM CAIN
Do…
The city is at its most magical at dawn. When the streets are empty, steam billows from the sidewalks and, as the sun rises, the skyline lights up. Head to Central Park, the High Line (a railway viaductturned-park in Chelsea), or the Brooklyn Bridge for the best spots to enjoy the sunrise.
Times Square is a neon-lit tourist trap, but it is also home to a number of attractions including the NFL Experience – an interactive setting to immerse yourself in the sport. New York is a city full of legendary sports teams. The Knicks play at Madison Square Garden, while a ballgame at Yankee Stadium is a quintessential American experience. Late summer also sees the U.S. Open tennis at Flushing Meadows.
Madison Square Garden is also a must-play venue for the world’s biggest music acts, while Radio City Music Hall is the location where many acts aspire to play, and you can catch up-and-coming talent along with some of the world’s greatest performers. The Theater District is the place to catch a Broadway show, including perennial crowd pleasers the likes of Hamilton and Chicago.
If art is more your thing, “Museum Mile” runs along the Upper East Side of Fifth Avenue and includes world-class institutions, including The Met, the Guggenheim, and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). On the opposite side of Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History spreads across four city blocks and hosts the T. rex skeleton.
The Manhattan skyline is the most recognizable in the world. Enjoy city views from one of the iconic observation decks – The Empire State Building, Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center), the Chrysler Building, or One World Trade Center. Finish off the iconic sites with a ferry trip to the Statue of Liberty
02 Take a walk across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge 03 Relax, run, cycle, or walk in Central Park
04 Don't miss The Knicks at Madison Square Garden 05 The Guggenheim Museum, one of the many along Museum Mile
Shop…
Shopping in Manhattan is as exciting as ever. Whatever your style, there are vintage gems, such as the Seven Wonders Collective; special clothing boutiques, including native New Yorker Ulla Johnson’s flagship store; and the greats of Fifth Avenue – Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, and, of course, Tiffany & Co. On Manhattan’s west side, Hudson Yards has established itself as the city’s mega-mall, while the coolest boutiques congregate around the upscale Bowery neighborhood.
Sleep…
Hotel trends sweep over Manhattan in waves. When Ian Schrager (of Studio 54 fame) pioneered the concept of the boutique hotel, he turned hotels into more than just a place to rest your head, transforming entire Manhattan neighborhoods in a departure beyond the usual Central Park and Fifth Avenue grand dames. Venturing downtown to the cobblestoned lower Manhattan quarter of Tribeca and the Financial District, the recently opened Warren Street Hotel is the third New York property by the Firmdale group. In keeping with the surrounding vibrant and creative Tribeca neighborhood, the property is infused with designer (and proprietor) Kit Kemp’s contemporary and funloving style. Eclectic touches are everywhere; there is an extensive collection of specially commissioned art, including a 21’ bronze and plaster light sculpture dangling above the bar, while custom-made furniture and upholstery throughout the communal guest areas, and in each of the individually designed 69 bedrooms and suites, pays homage to the area’s history as a 19th-century textiles hub. A number of suites feature landscaped terraces and gardens, while others have views over the skyline and One World Trade Center.
Eat & Drink…
From bagels and French-style bistros to the latest cutting-edge cuisine, New York does both street food and fine-dining in style. You could go all out and opt for the 18-course tasting menu at the two Michelinstarred Atera. Here Executive Chef Ronny Emborg uses seasonal ingredients to create an immersive sensory dining experience. Staying close to home, the all-day brasserie Warren Street Bar & Restaurant has a seasonal menu serving American classics, while the bar is the perfect place to perch for a pretheater drink. The surrounding Tribeca neighborhood is home to a slew of restaurants and bars, including The Odeon, a storied institution where it is rumored the cosmopolitan was invented, while Pastis in the Meatpacking District by the same owner offers a similar chic vibe. During the summer, the World Trade Center has a huge food market, Smorgasburg, while the Meatpacking District’s Chelsea Market has a 30-strong crowd of food vendors. And finally, for New York’s famous bagels, head to Leon’s Bagels in Greenwich Village for an iconic taste of this vibrant city.
