Welcome to the Spring 2025 issue of Navigator In the world of superyachting, the theme “The Best of Intentions” resonates deeply with the industry’s ongoing evolution and commitment to positive transformation. Here at Northrop & Johnson, we are constantly challenged to look beyond mere luxury, focusing instead on how our collective passion for maritime excellence can drive positive impact.
We all know that yachts are by their nature a polluting asset, but, just like owning a car, ownership doesn’t have to mean that you don’t do what you can to mitigate against the worst of the excesses. For example, you can choose to buy a yacht that is less harmful for the environment than a standard (if there is such a thing as standard) yacht, or you can use your yacht for purposes that benefit other people or the marine environment itself.
You don’t even have to own a yacht to give back because a number of charter clients have incorporated scientific research into their charters or dedicated time during their vacations to engage in local philanthropic programs. The yachting industry as a whole is often criticized for greenwashing – and to an extent, some of the actors within it are certainly guilty of that – but there are also those who are genuinely going to extreme lengths to make our world a better place. One such person is the explorer Mike Horn, interviewed in our Navigator Knows this issue. I don’t think I have ever come across another individual as inspiring to me. Read all about his lifelong dedication to exploration and his current project, Pangaea X. If this doesn’t motivate you to do more, I hope that our expert guide to cruising trends brings you one step closer to a deeper connection with our planet. After all, that’s what yachting is all about – the chance to explore, to encounter wildlife and local cultures, to access new areas, and to share it all with your friends and family.

Northrop & Johnson discusses the yachting trends making waves
Navigator talks to the intrepid explorer Mike Horn on his environmental youth innovator incubation program, Pangaea X
As modern-day explorers go, there are few as passionate as Mike Horn. Explorers will always find ways to go beyond what went before and break new ground, and no one endeavors to discover more about our planet than Horn. For 35 years, he has pushed the limits of human fortitude through a series of epic adventures. This South African native has swum the length of the Amazon River, circumnavigated the globe under human power alone, and walked to the North Pole in the depths of the Arctic winter. During his many adventures, he has witnessed some remarkable sights, but the rapid environmental changes have been both the most spectacular and the most souldestroying. “After witnessing the impact of humankind on the planet, I knew I couldn’t just be a bystander,” says Horn. “Sailing provides a unique way to engage directly with the issues our planet is facing.” Recognizing that one way to protect and preserve the planet is through the next generation, the intrepid explorer is now on a mission to educate youngsters. “I feel a deep sense of responsibility to protect the planet and to inspire young people to do the same,” says Horn.
Setting the stage for future research and decision-making, Horn uses exploration to inspire young innovators and changemakers.
In 2008, Horn and a crew of young explorers set sail on board the 115’ (35m) exploration vessel PANGAEA. The four-year circumnavigation, which covered over 100,000 nautical miles, was designed to highlight the fragility of the Earth’s ecosystems and demonstrate the urgent need for action. “The only way to truly protect our planet is to inspire the younger generation to see and appreciate the natural beauty of our planet firsthand,” says Horn. “Over the course of this four-year program, we undertook 12 expeditions to diverse corners of the globe, each involving 12 young adults aged 15 to 20, selected from around the world. We faced a range of challenges, including extreme weather conditions. I was blown away by their enthusiasm and also their staying power in the face of adversity.” During the voyage, Horn and his team also conducted scientific research in some of the world’s most remote and inaccessible locations, engaging in environmental education and awareness campaigns with locals along the way. “Community is crucial,” says Horn. “And no one knows the ocean better than those who live by it. Every time we docked near a coastal village or island, we held open forums, inviting local fishermen and others to share their observations about the changes they were seeing firsthand.” The expedition was an unqualified success, with participants not only returning home as environmental ambassadors but also inspiring others to take action.
Building on the triumph of the original PANGAEA expedition, Horn then launched a social and environmental impact program called Pangaea X. With a stronger focus on young innovators and changemakers, Pangaea X aims to inspire a new generation of environmental leaders to make a tangible difference in the future and safeguarding of our planet.
Selection for Pangaea X is tough among the many applicants with a strong passion for environmental issues. Those who stand out demonstrate a drive to make a difference and show resilience, curiosity, and an adventurous spirit. “You don’t need to be an athlete or scientist to join the program, you just need to be willing to learn, work hard, and be open to what nature has to teach us,” says Horn.
Horn believes that exploration is key to increasing our understanding of the planet, allowing us to more effectively manage, conserve, and use the world’s resources that are vital to our lives. Horn also believes that there is an opportunity for the superyacht community to contribute toward scientific research. With only five percent of the sea floor mapped, and our understanding of the marine ecosystem confined largely to coastal regions and areas of commercial fishing interest, there is still a lot to be explored. Purpose-built research vessels, like OceanX and REV Ocean, are expensive and there is an opportunity for the more run-of-the-mill yachting community to make a contribution. “For example, platforms like Yachts for Science connect scientists with vital research projects with yacht owners who can host the scientists on board to conduct their research,” says Horn. “SeaKeepers also has a DISCOVERY Yacht Program matching scientists with yachts.”
You don’t need to be a yacht owner to make a difference. There are hundreds of initiatives all over the world allowing charterers with an interest in the health of our oceans to engage with local communities or participate in local environmental initiatives.

“I want to give young people the tools, skills, and firsthand experiences to appreciate the Earth and, more importantly, to take responsibility for its future.”
Mike Horn
Horn, and his sailing yacht PANGAEA, are now in the fifteenth year of adventures that have taken them on 27 world tours in a never-ending quest to highlight the fragility of the Earth. Custom-built, PANGAEA is designed specifically for research and exploration and has reached some of the world’s most remote and inaccessible locations. PANGAEA and Horn are currently in the midst of an expedition named “What’s Left”, which aims to return to a number of destinations after 30 years of exploration to assess the impact of environmental changes in these areas. To date, they have journeyed to the Arctic and will be heading to the Amazon, Patagonia, Antarctica, New Zealand, Australia, and Asia. Completing adventures and research along the way, the expedition’s aim is to gain a better understanding of the changes that have occurred in these remote areas over the past half century.

From the moment you step on board this multi-award-winning megayacht, you will feel like you are part of something extraordinary. But don’t take our word for it; here are the top 10 reasons that make ALFA NERO the iconic yacht that she is.
Boasting a fine pedigree, ALFA NERO was created by a stellar team that includes the renowned Dutch shipyard Oceanco, Nuvolari Lenard, and Alberto Pinto
A significant refit in 2024 leaves ALFA NERO in immaculate condition with every amenity required for the perfect charter experience
26 professional crew, including an onboard personal trainer, spa therapist, and exceptionally talented chefs, provide exceptional service to her 12 guests
Spacious inside and out, ALFA NERO features vast deck spaces and voluminous interiors
One of ALFA NERO’s most defining features is her expansive aft deck featuring a sizeable infinity swimming pool with built-in current and full wet bar
Spread over four beautifully arranged decks, with a guest and crew elevator for easy access, ALFA NERO’s amenities include a spa area, gym, steam room and sauna, two Jacuzzis, cinema set-up, and Pleyel grand piano
An expansive swim platform allows for easy access to ALFA NERO’s array of water toys
Several lounge areas provide ample opportunity for guests to relax or entertain, while dining areas include both formal and informal interior and alfresco settings
The light, airy, and contemporary interior decor is inspired by both Pop Art and Art Deco, with vibrant color schemes
Boasting flexible accommodations and a familyfriendly layout, ALFA NERO’s six beautifully appointed guest cabins include an upper deck master suite with a large office and a private deck and Jacuzzi
Lift eFoil
Deckhand (and thrill seeker) Katiana Sevier also acts as a watersports instructor on board ALFA NERO.
Among Kat’s favorite water toys is the Lift eFoil. “The thrill of riding over the water is like flying,” says Kat. “It takes a few plunges to master, but once you work out how to use weight and balance to bring the board out of the water, the handheld remote controls the speed for a smooth ride.”
Foil boards, wakeboards, electric jetboards, slides and paddleboards are part ofthe arsenal of fun water toys that you will find aboard ALFA NERO. Navigator talks to her crewmembers on their favorite picks.
As an avid surfer, Second Officer Rochelle Stebbing craves the waves that lap the shores of her native South Africa. While cruising in calm waters, guests can still catch the thrill of riding by hopping on one of the two jetboards found in ALFA NERO’s toy box. “Built around an electric jetpack and controlled by a handheld remote, the TKO Type-001 Jetboard is ideal for both beginners and advanced riders alike,” says Rochelle. “Using a remote with varying speeds, lie flat on the board and start with some speed to get going, then move forward up the board on your knees until you are comfortable to stand up. Surf’s up!”
“Ever imagine carving through the water, not just riding but dancing on its surface? That’s what a wakeboard does,” says Nicole Terry, Charter Manager. “The fantastic crew are always happy to teach guests to glide, carve, and even perform aerial tricks while they tow them using ALFA NERO’s Novurania jet tender. It’s a thrilling mix of balance, precision, and pure adrenaline.”
“ALFA NERO’s toy box is packed with towable toys for all abilities,” says Deckhand Villum Rasmussen. “We have guests speeding across waves on a single-rider tube, sharing laughs with friends on a multi-rider towable, or chasing adrenaline on an extreme design – there’s something for everyone.”
The 269’1” (82m) ALFA NERO is available to charter this summer in the Mediterranean for prices from €812,500 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.

Multifunctional spaces on board, including staterooms-turned-gyms or nanny cabins functioning as office spaces, are nothing new. We have also seen a trend in bonus spaces on larger yachts to include everything from snow rooms to underwater viewing lounges. The trend is seeing a resurgence in 2025 with smallersized yachts incorporating everything from mudroom to games areas.
One such vessel is the 154’3” (47.5m) SERENISSIMA I from Mengi Yay. Utilizing the foredeck space on the tri-deck, the designers have incorporated a boxing ring complete with a punchbag and gloves in the bow.
SERENISSIMA I is available to be purchased for €34,950,000 through Northrop & Johnson.

Making Waves

The Italian yard also unveiled its LIFE MYSTIC project to develop the first green methanol bi-fuel superyacht. Funded by the EU, and developed in collaboration with key industry players, the LIFE MYSTIC project represents an important step forward in sustainability within the yachting sector.

The time pressure on senior executives continues to increase, meaning every minute in their working day counts. That explains why many organizations are increasing their use of business aviation because of the huge range of benefits it offers.
In a recent survey commissioned by Airbus Corporate Jets (ACJ), 95 percent of senior executives at large U.S. corporations who use private jets described them as a vital business tool enabling them to reach destinations more quickly, have more face-to-face meetings with clients and business partners, and generally use their time more efficiently. It’s no surprise therefore why 86 percent of those surveyed believe U.S. companies that own or lease their aircraft will increase their utilization of them over the next two years.
In terms of the specific reasons why they expect to use business aviation more, 62 percent of those surveyed cited the increased flexibility it offers, and this was followed by a growing focus on personal security, improved technology on board aircraft, and a greater focus on the well-being of staff. ACJ conducted a similar survey with large hedge funds and private equity firms on their use of business aircraft and found similar views. More than nine out of ten (96 percent)
hedge funds surveyed said they can close more deals because of the many benefits of business aviation.
The ACJ TwoTwenty business aircraft offers the ultimate comfort and technology to support those working whilst they fly. It is one of the most efficient aircraft in its category of large, ultra long range (ULR) business jets.
It offers a true office environment with best-in-class connectivity and a range of relaxation options, including a California king-size bed, an en suite bathroom with a rain shower, and 55-inch (140-cm) 4K TV screens. With six VIP zones measuring 786 sq ft (73 sq m), the ACJ TwoTwenty has twice the cabin space as similarly priced long range business jets. It’s operating costs are also around a third lower than those of other large business jets.
With a range of up to 5,650 nm (more than 12 flight hours), the ACJ TwoTwenty can meet the requirements of nearly all U.S. departures, connecting city pairs including Los Angeles to London, Miami to Buenos Aires, and New York to Istanbul for example. The world of business is increasingly turning to business aviation to help support growth plans.

The elegant house of Chopard’s sporty Alpine Eagle line (which debuted just five years ago) not only carries an intriguing backstory of family heritage, but the watches also pack a potent sustainability punch to boot. Chopard heir Karl-Fritz Scheufele noticed a unique steel sports watch on his father KarlFriedrich’s desk that he didn’t recognize. It turned out to be a steel St. Moritz sports watch that was the very first product his father worked on nearly 40 years ago. This accidental incident led directly to the modern Alpine Eagle. The majority of the Alpine Eagle collection is rendered in the brand’s proprietary Lucent Steel alloy, which is derived from recycled steel and is more reflective and resistant to abrasions than typical steel. Gold versions are crafted with ethically sourced gold, a company-wide initiative (which means watches and jewelry). The ore Chopard sources is verified to meet international environmental and social standards that dictate responsible mining and traceable chain of custody. While the recent 44mm Alpine Eagle XL Chrono here is created from Grade 5 titanium (the first Alpine Eagle chronograph to do so), it continues to align with Chopard’s environmental Alpine Eagle Foundation. The foundation was founded by co-president KarlFreidrich Scheufele, along with other environmental experts, in 2020, with a particular focus on re-introducing the white-tailed eagle to its natural habitat in the Swiss Alps (the species disappeared from the area over a century ago). Know that your choice of this handsome, $25,000 rubberstrapped timepiece with a dial inspired by the white-tailed eagle’s eye helped fund the foundation’s efforts. They have successfully begun releasing eaglets to the Lake Geneva area, with a goal of repopulating the region with over 80 new raptors in the next seven years. chopard.com
Oris
Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV Swiss watchmaker Oris might be the most accessible brand in this roundup, but it is also dedicated to one of the most robust, eco-friendly, and charitable initiatives in the watch industry. Every year sees multiple watch releases that intend to do some good while keeping you on time through the brand’s Change for the Better campaign. A lot of the brand’s focus is on oceanic sustainability, especially via its popular Aquis Date dive watch. One of the most emblematic models is the Aquis Date Upcycle (released in 2021, but still available for $2,800). The Upcycle sports a colorful dial produced from recovered ocean plastic; not only making each dial one-of-kind, but reducing and recycling plastic refuse that poses a danger to sea-life and the composition of the oceans themselves. The latest environmentally conscious Aquis Date is this 43.5mm steel Oris Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV created in partnership with the Australian non-profit Reef Restoration Foundation, which was released this past summer. Certified to 300m of water resistance, this limited edition performs like a legitimate workhorse dive watch, albeit with a gorgeous cerulean gradiated dial, a colormatched date view at 6 o’clock, protected screw-in crown, lollipop seconds hands, tungsten unidirectional dive bezel, contrasting brushed and polished steel bracelet, and a legendary Oris Calibre 400 movement that provides an uncanny five days of power reserve. Add in a special engraved Great Barrier Reef caseback and the knowledge that your purchase helped support the coral restoration and planting efforts of the non-profit foundation, and you could be wearing your watery heart on your sleeve. Limited to 2,000 editions, dive into this $4,500 timepiece quickly. oris.ch
Ulysse Nardin
Diver NET OPS
Riding the concern-for-the-oceans wave, fine watchmaker Ulysse Nardin also has a laudable track record for including strong ecological alignment along with its signature horological expertise and decidedly luxury appeal. In 2021, its Diver Lemon Shark timepiece was created in partnership with multiple ocean education and sea-life-supporting organizations, with a particular focus on preserving the world’s shark populations (released in 2021 in limited edition, but still available at some Ulysse Nardin boutiques for $7,800).
A newer Ulysse Nardin Diver model from last year makes even more of a positive impact by using even more pretty-interesting sustainable materials. In fact, the Diver NET OPS might be one of the most sustainablybuilt haute dive watches ever, according to the watchmaker. The 44mm case is constructed from 95 percent recycled stainless steel, and the case sides and back are a mix of a cutting-edge material called Nylo (which is formed from recovered, upcycled fishing nets) and a composite material called Carbonium (produced with 40 percent less environmental impact than other carbon composite materials). The Carbonium also appears on the watch’s bezel, and since every “slice” of that material is unique, there is a built-in bespoke nature to the Diver Net OPS, as well. Recycled fishing net is also incorporated into the fabric strap option of this dive watch. All the edgy eco-friendliness aside, the khaki green $13,300 Ulysses Nardin Diver Net OPS is a full-on, “bad-ass”-grade diving instrument: 300m of water resistance, a self-winding UN 118 movement with a very prominent power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, and a diving-maximized small seconds indicator at 6 o’clock that incorporates a date window.

Private jet manufacturers are saying you can have it all your own way
As private jets transition from a mode of transportation to office, den, meeting room, and dining space, everything from the galley to the lavatory and everything in between is increasingly customizable. While obviously, what you can specify increases with the size of the aircraft, buyers of new private jets will find a wider variety of options than ever before.
Both Embraer and Textron, which dominate the light jet market, enable buyers to customize entry-level jets. For example, the Embraer Phenom 300E offers three distinct cabin configurations ranging from six to eight seats. There are also three seat types, four sew styles, three carpet styles, and a trio of beautiful veneers. Small details, such as seat side panels, can be either leather or carbon fiber, as can the lavatory sink. For the exterior, there are over twenty paint schemes and more than a dozen colors.
To get started, you only need to visit Embraer’s website. This enables you to review and choose design options across its fleet of business jets, from the very light Phenom 100E to the midsize Praetor 500 and super-midsize Praetor 600.
Textron Aviation Interior Design Manager Shelby Page says, “We love saying yes. The more we can say yes, the more fun our job is.” Its Citation CJ3 Gen3 allows for an additional seat in the cabin or an extended refreshment center with more than a half-dozen cabin interior schemes.
Of course, the bigger the jet, the more opportunities to give it your own distinct imprint. Bombardier makes the ultra-longrange Global line of business jets. A spokesperson says, “To some owners, luxury might mean silk carpets; others will want a chrome-plated shower, golden dishware or even dedicated library or karaoke spaces on board. Ultimately, the people at the Bombardier Center of Excellence bring the same level of passion and precision to every cabin, no matter how distinctive it might be.” On its Global 7500, you can configure four distinct living zones, including a master bedroom, a conference suite, and a lounge area. Walking into its design center in Montreal
is like visiting your tailor, where walls are filled with an array of sustainable luxury materials, from flooring to wall coverings and everything else.
The Canadian OEM recently opened a customer center in Miami, Florida, providing easy access for yacht owners. Like Embraer, you can start at its website. Custom options for its entire lineup – from the Challenger 3500 super-midsize jet to the large cabin Challenger 650 and the Global lineup –are each represented.
French private jet maker Dassault Aviation claims its ability to customize your airplane as “the haute couture of private jets” and emphasizes “French flair finishes.” Its upcoming Falcon 10X, with its 6’8” cabin height and 9’1”cabin width, gives you a particularly impressive canvas. Options include custom sizing for the dining and conference area, your personal entertainment zone with a large screen, and a full queen-size bed in your owner’s suite. And yes, don’t forget, your own shower as well.
Airbus Corporate Jets, which adapts the airliners of its parent Airbus to the private jet market, has elevated its interior offerings with the ACJ TwoTwenty. It offers 786 square feet of floor space and up to six distinct zones. The ACJ TwoTwenty Creative Studio uses virtual reality so owners can better envision the options. ACJ also offers an online interface that will give you a good feel for the floor plan options. That includes executive lounges, club rooms, business lounges, cinema lounges, guest lounges, and bedroom and master bathroom options.

While nearly every luxury carmaker offers some degree of customization to their best clients, there is something about the legendary British atelier/studios of Goodwood (Rolls-Royce), Gaydon (Aston Martin), and Crewe (Bentley) that takes the concept of “my car” to a whole new level.
Aston Martin
The latest news from the 007-beloved carmaker is the re-introduction of its Vanquish super-GT flagship for 2025: a thrumming $427,700 rear-wheel beast equipped with a 5.2-liter V12 that puts out 824hp and really taps back into the performance spirit of the automaker, who, of late, had been focusing on its DBX luxury crossovers. Perhaps in deference to customers who would want to make the upcoming Vanquish truly their own, Aston Martin opened a new Manhattan-based ultra-luxury showroom dubbed (of course) Q Branch by Aston Martin, in 2023. However, it is the first and only facility of its kind (currently), and also services the bespoke programs for all of Aston Martin’s models. This Q Branch outpost augments the carmaker’s already established bespoke process involving its global dealership network and the company headquarters in Gaydon, located near Stratford-on-Avon in Warwickshire. Your personal selections will determine the wait time for your bespoke vehicle. Aston Martin does not publish an average time, as it can vary greatly. But consider, at full-capacity, that the maker can produce only 15 standard DB11s in one day. Any wait will be worth it. astonmartin.com
In the modern era of the illustrious carmaker, every new Rolls-Royce, in practical purposes, can be called bespoke. That is because every commissioned automobile manufactured is based on the exacting specifications of the buyer, no matter how humble or elaborate. Even in the days when you could theoretically go to a dealer and purchase a production Rolls-Royce, many customers opted to customize their automobiles via the bespoke artisan workshops at the brand’s factory in Goodwood, located in Chichester, England. A 350-million dollar investment to expand those facilities was just announced in January. While the latest released model from Rolls, the sporty 2024 two-door Spectre (from $420,000) is the world’s first all-electric true luxury vehicle, that innovation in power train in no way limits the sheer possibilities of additional bespoke customization. The brand’s exclusively bespoke nature is reflected in a series of Rolls-Royce Private Office showrooms and studios worldwide, where new customers can explore myriad possibilities in person and be guided toward their perfect vehicle. There are four such facilities currently: Dubai and Shanghai, a marvelous new Private Office in Manhattan’s chic Meatpacking District that opened last fall, and the newest facility in Seoul, South Korea, which debuted just before the New Year in November. The final price you pay is determined by the model you choose, the level of customization, and the labor and materials involved, but, in general, your Rolls-Royce will take about six months to receive (at the quickest). rolls-roycemotorcars.com
Like Rolls-Royce, Bentley has always performed bespoke customization for its discerning clients, with communication flowing between its global dealership network and the production headquarters (for the past 75 years) in Crewe in Cheshire. While the custom Mulliner workshops are housed at the maker’s main production site in a former Spitfire engine factory, inside the peaked brick exterior, a clean, modern, scientific vibe permeates the production floors. In the section of the workshops that house the maker’s selections of fine burled walnut, oak, and koa wood veneers, a temperature- and humidity-controlled cigar storage angle joins the artful mix. Bentley’s reigning “wood man” is Richard Bell, manager of manufacturing and overseer of the legendary Bentley Wood Shop (he has spent 12 of his 14 years at the company dedicated to the department). Veneer customization is sourced from the maker’s exquisite collection of pattern-matched options (including specially patterned burl veneer pieces held aside for special clients). But even more out-of-the-box special requests are certainly not outof-the-question, including at least one Mulliner customer who supplied wood from a tree felled on his own property to include in his bespoke automobile. Like all Bentley models, the recently announced 2025 Bentley Flying Spur (a fourth-generation performance sedan starting at $276,450 featuring the marque’s most powerful engine ever in the form of a hybrid powertrain that pumps out 771bhp) is available to undergo a bespoke Mulliner glow-up. Again, delivery dates encompass all the factors mentioned above, but Bentley lists its special order vehicle turn-around at eight to ten months. bentleymotors.com

The Balearic island of Mallorca is known for its stunning coastline, and no setting could be better than the cliffside location of Cap Rocat. The former fortified citadel turned luxury resort sits atop a 1.2-mile stretch of protected coast on the southern tip of the Bay of Palma. Surrounded by a 74-acre nature reserve, the storied escape offers 30 rooms and suites. While many of the rooms are located in the main fortress, the Sentinel Suites are carved into the rock where the fort’s cannons were once located. All eyes point in one direction: to the horizon and the yacht-speckled Bay of Palma. The hotel’s spa is located 40' underground and offers a range of Ayurvedic treatments, a saltwater pool, and hammam, while dining options include both gourmet cuisine at La Fortaleza and the Sea Club – a favorite for casual seaside dining. caprocat.com
02 Lopud 1483, Croatia
Croatia is not short of historic properties that have opened their doors to guests, however none are quite as unique as Lopud 1483. Located on the northern tip of Lopud, near Dubrovnik, this converted Franciscan monastery has been meticulously restored and transformed into a private, five-suite retreat. On an exclusive basis, guests have use of the Old Kitchen, Sunset Terrace, wellness facilities, and the Secret Garden, complete with stations designed for meditation and contemplation. lopud1483.com
03 Monastero Santa Rosa, Amalfi Coast, Italy
A stay at this five-star hotel perched on a cliff’s edge on the Amalfi Coast may feel like a religious experience – and with very good reason. Occupying a former 17th-century monastery with views of the fishing village of Conca dei Marini, the property was originally built as a home to nuns. It’s a place synonymous with seclusion, with its lemon-scented air and terraced gardens spilling down onto the Tyrrhenian Sea. The monastery’s original bones have been enhanced by local artisans, but don’t expect monastic simplicity throughout this luxury boutique hotel. Everything has been recently renovated in a way that combines the traditional with the contemporary style. With 20 sea-view rooms, an infinity pool, spa, library, bar, and Michelin-starred restaurant Il Refettorio, there’s no chance of abstinence. monasterosantarosa.com
04 Castello di Casole, Florence, Italy
Castello di Casole is more than a converted hotel it’s an entire village. The small hamlet in the heart of Tuscany was once a medieval town, complete with a castle and meandering streets. Surrounded by vineyards, woods, and farmland, the 10thcentury Castello di Casole has played host to luminaries for centuries. The castle itself was built by local aristocracy, the Bargagli family, before becoming the holiday home of the Italian movie director Luchino Visconti. Now a luxury retreat, guests can stay in one of 39 suites in the castle and surrounding buildings or in one of the 28 restored houses that dot the 4,200 acres of the Castello di Casole’s estate. Tuscan decadence comes in the form of a large infinity pool, a botanic spa set within the old wine cellar, two restaurants, and a bar. belmond.com
05 La Colombe d’Or, Saint Paul de Vence, France
A legend even along a coast full of legends, this quiet, rustic hotel is more than the sum of its parts. La Colombe d’Or has grown from a small inn into a 25-room boutique hotel with a fine arts pedigree. The walls are adorned with a museum-worthy art collection of 20th-century masters – Matisse, Picasso and Chagall – all of whom were patrons who donated works in exchange for accommodation. Relax by the pool and admire the large Calder mobile; enjoy an apéritif on the terrace, overlooked by a Léger mosaic; and enjoy hearty Provençal cuisine surrounded by the presence of Picassos and Matisses. The hotel’s ambiance and historical significance make it a unique destination for art and culture lovers. la-colombe-dor.com

The Itinerary
Combine an encounter with ancient history in Athens followed by an epic, island-hopping, off-the-beatentrack cruise through the eastern Cyclades.
Fly into Athens and head to the art-filled New Hotel Athens, your home base for the next few days. Located a stone’s throw from the Acropolis, the property was designed by the Campana Brothers (the first Brazilian artists to exhibit work at MoMA), who worked with local architecture students to ensure Greek history and culture were woven throughout the property. Devour the food scene of Athens, visiting bakeries and markets and tasting olive oil, honey, and cheese.
Leave the crowds of Athens and cruise to the eastern Cyclades, where the island of Delos recently reopened an archaeological museum devoted to uncovering the site’s rich history as the most sacred place in Ancient Greece. Highlights of the museum are the original lion sculptures from the Terrace of the Lions, originally built around 600 BCE by Naxians in honor of one of the major Greek deities, Apollo.
Continue your Greek odyssey on the island of Naxos. Wander through the narrow streets of Naxos town, discovering its ancient Venetian architecture, and delight in a culinary tour of the quaint tavernas. Visit the iconic Portara – an ancient marble gate standing proudly against the backdrop of the azure Aegean Sea.
Your next adventure awaits on the stunning island of Sifnos. Only accessible by boat, the island offers charming villages and beautiful landscapes to discover while taking in the fantastic food scene and fabulous coastline. Take the tender to the nearby uninhabited island of Polyaigos for a secluded lunch before heading to nearby Kimolos. Explore the authentic fishing villages and stunning caves to the north of the island before heading back on board for a peaceful night at anchor.
Anchor off the beautiful island of Milos and head inland for an off-road Jeep safari. Follow the dirt paths to the Natural Reserve that lies to the west of the island. Here, volcanic formations and ancient chapels dot the landscape. Swap off-road trails for your yacht’s tender and explore the Kleftiko caves on Milos’s southern coast. Take one final dive into the stunning waters, swimming and snorkeling through the spectacular rock formations. Spend your last night on board before heading back to Athens.
Navigator’s experts explore the latest travel trends to bring you the hottest picks for the summer yachting season
While social media influencers have been inspiring travelers for a while now, it seems that television has regained its position as a key travel influencer. Hit shows set in breathtaking locations have sparked a number of charter clients to explore further afield. The demand for charters in Sicily, for example, increased ten-fold after the sun-drenched location served as the backdrop for the second season of The White Lotus, while Ripley’s palatial Italian boltholes continue to entice charterers to the Amalfi Coast. Whether you want to stroll around Dubrovnik’s ramparts as seen in Game of Thrones, or channel your inner Meryl Streep on the Greek islands of Skiathos and Skopelos, it seems that the “set-jetting” trend continues to surge interest in both old and new filming locations.
Step aboard the 116’ (35.36m) NOROADER this summer in the Eastern Mediterranean. Prices from €140,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 10 guests.
For those cruising Italy’s Amalfi Coast or Sicily, the 194’9” (59.37m) LA BLANCA is available. Prices from €395,000 per week, plus expenses, for 12 guests.
Amalfi Coast
Dubrovnik
Underpinned by a growing interest in experiential escapes, charter clients are more eager than ever to delve deeper into their chosen destination. Rather than spending time at the popular beach club or hottest restaurant, clients are increasingly seeking deeper connections with destinations. This trend, known as experiential travel, is not just about the destination itself, but the experiences you have while there. Whether this is in the form of purpose-driven adventures – focusing on meaningful goals such as wildlife conservation,
environmental programs, or more personal interactions with local communities – many charter clients consider indigenous cultural experiences an important factor when choosing their cruising ground.
With her well-stocked toy box, array of alfresco areas, and friendly crew, the 220’ (67m) CALEX is perfect for every type of charter experience. Prices from €680,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.
While the perennially popular coastlines of the Côte d’Azur, Amalfi Coast, the Greek Cyclades, and Ionian islands continue to be in high demand, many charterers are opting for destination dupes. Whether combining yachting hotspots with lesser-known portsof-call, or swapping an entire cruising ground for a similar, less-crowded coastline, the alternatives often surpass the real thing. Instead of Capri, for example, the neighboring island of Ischia is much bigger and offers great beaches. Similarly, while cruising the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Mallorca, extend your itinerary to incorporate the quieter island of Menorca.
Over in Greece, the Saronic Islands offer a perfect bohemian escape and, despite being located just off the Greek mainland, are way less crowded than the popular Cyclades or Ionian archipelagos. “Some charterers will still want Mykonos and Santorini during the busy high season and nothing else will do,” says Senior Charter Broker Diana Meza. “But if they are flexible, that opens a lot of possibilities where you can offer alternative destinations, as long as the owners are taking their yachts there, and they will if there is the demand.”
The 200’ (61m) LADY KATHRYN V is available to charter throughout the Mediterranean for prices from €430,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.
A yacht charter can encompass many things, but for most, it is an opportunity to disconnect and embrace the off-grid experience. Rather than FOMO (fear of missing out), it’s the JOMO (joy of missing out) that has become more popular. A yacht offers the perfect sanctuary for charterers looking to spend their vacation time soothing their nervous system and exploring at their own pace. “A lot of our clients live very fast-paced lives, so they want to switch off while on vacation,” says Senior Charter Broker Fiona Maureso. “There is a lot to be said for quality time spent with family, both as a tribe and one-on-one; connecting with nature, appreciating your surroundings, and creating precious memories with our loved ones.”
With six cabins for up to 12 guests, the 236’3” (72m) AXIOMA is the perfect yacht for family charters. Cruising the East and West Mediterranean throughout the summer, she is available for prices from €562,500 per week, plus expenses.
13 Consider AXIOMA if cruising the Mediterranean this summer
We have witnessed the peak Mediterranean charter season shift from June, July, and August to May through September as unreliable weather renders seasonality less relevant than ever. With shifting climate patterns affecting seasonality, cruising during the shoulder months of May and September can be just as incredible, if not more so. Plus, you benefit from low-season rates and less crowded anchorages, making for a unique and memorable experience. “The 220’ (67m) CALEX, for example, is available to charter in the West Mediterranean this summer for prices from €680,000 per week in June and September, with the rate increasing to €740,000 per week in July and August,” says Charter Specialist Adam Fitzmaurice.
14 Emjoy the shoulder seasons aboard the 220' CALEX 15 The perenially popular Greek island of Mykonos
Whether it’s the allure of temperatures in the mid70s, or the thrill of chasing the eclipse, demand for charters in Northern Europe has increased ten-fold in the last decade. “Scandinavian summer is not just a passing trend but is now a bucket list favorite,” says Fiona. It’s not just the coastlines of Sweden and Norway that are attracting the superyachts; it looks like Greenland’s High Arctic will become the new cool-cation hotspot, with eclipse-viewing charters and a variety of experiences available at every anchorage. “I could never have prepared myself for the sheer scale of the breathtaking landscapes,” said one charter client. “From one location to the next, the epic scenery, wildlife, and natural wonders surpassed all my expectations.”
Health is another key trend with more clients requesting yachts that offer a range of wellness amenities and facilities. “Clients increasingly follow wellbeing routines and hacks to stay healthy and don’t want to skip their habits while on vacation,” says Adam. “To stay on top of this shift, more and more of the charter fleet have identified appropriate longevity offerings, including better-equipped gyms and dedicated spas.” Adam recommends the 164’ (49.99m) VICTORIA DEL MAR, which has a fullyequipped, climate-controlled gym located on the main deck that can be converted into a massage or spa room. Another popular yacht is the 139’ (42.6m) ‘H, which also offers a state-of-the-art gym with equipment for every fitness level. There aren’t many gyms that can compete with the inspiring views found on board the 203’ (62m) RoMa. Located on the sundeck, this air-conditioned gym looks directly out over the ocean, while there is a masseuse within the crew, as well as yoga and meditation sessions run by crew members.

For those looking for a luxurious and exclusive way to vacation in The Bahamas, a superyacht is an unrivaled option. Navigator talks to John Pinder, Parliamentary Secretary for the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, on the various offerings enticing the yachting crowd to the 700-plus Bahamian chain of islands.
They may be in close proximity to the US coast of Florida, with less than 50 nautical miles between landfall, but the islands of The Bahamas offer a world of difference for the waterborne. Providing the perfect combination of fun and laid-back charm, with ample island-hopping opportunities, they allow for a new vibe every day. “There are so many different experiences for those visiting the islands by superyacht,” says Pinder. “From the welcoming culture, the history, the casinos and the uberluxurious resorts to the deserted islands, deep-sea fishing, and world-renowned diving, there is something for every style of vacation.”
The traditional superyacht itinerary takes in the cosmopolitan capital of Nassau before cruising to the 100-mile string of pristine cays known as the Exumas. However, thanks to investments in infrastructure, The Bahamas cruising scene is changing. Known as “The boating capital of The Bahamas," the Abacos are the most northerly islands in this archipelago. Although they have been attracting the smaller boating crowd coming from America’s East Coast for decades, these prime cruising grounds are now on the superyacht radar thanks to increased superyacht facilities. “The Abacos really are unique in both their offerings on the water and on land,” says Pinder. “From world-class fishing tournaments, diving the Tongue of the Ocean, famous blue holes, championship golf courses and the Abaco Parrot, the islands and cays are simply stunning.” Added to this is the ease of access to these Out Islands. “Several airlines have regularly scheduled flights from the US with fast, connecting flights to dozens of smaller islands,” says Pinder. “Private charters are also readily available, with a number of FBOs for those traveling by private jet.” Recognizing the increased demand for cruising in the Abacos, Flexjet recently introduced their helicopter service from South Florida to Baker’s Bay in Abaco. “You can fly from Palm Beach to Baker’s Bay in an hour and 20 minutes,” says Pinder. “You could fly to an important business meeting and return to the islands easily without interrupting your cruising schedule.”
“In terms of highlights, I would recommend the Abacos’ Baker’s Bay and deep-sea fishing opportunities,” says Pinder. However, when it comes to yachting, the entire region is at your disposal.
“The notion that large yachts cannot navigate our waters is a myth,” says Pinder. “There are places where a shallow draft is advantageous, but these are far and few between and improvements in technology, including expansive seafloor mapping for the entire region, means that we can welcome any size vessel, even megayachts.” Indeed, with superyacht facilities spread all over The Bahamas –Albany Marina, Walker’s Cay, Norman’s Cay Marina – to name just a few, and several superyacht marina projects currently underway, there is a lot more on the horizon for The Bahamas. “We are just about to break ground on an exciting resort and marina project in South Abaco,” says Pinder. “As an Abaco native, the area is special to me, but I want to share it with those who appreciate its beauty. Sustainability and eco-friendly investments are at the top of my priorities, and Kakona is a perfect example of a development that has been designed with great care and responsibility to the pristine environment while providing significant improvements to the infrastructure and employment opportunities for the local community.”
Rest assured, all of the islands of The Bahamas are protected with strict rules and regulations on developments. “There are currently 2.2 million acres of national parks maintained by the Bahamas National Trust, and the goal is to grow the protected parks,” says Pinder. “We are committed to maintaining a balance between stewardship of our beautiful islands with increased infrastructure for the yachting community.”

With three decades of experience working in various sectors in the yachting industry, Ben Young was the perfect candidate to take the helm as Northrop & Johnson’s Commercial Director Europe, responsible for European operations. But how did it all begin? Navigator discusses all things yachting with Ben and discovers what plans he has for Northrop & Johnson.
How did your career in the yachting industry begin?
I first started in the yachting industry almost 30 years ago as a deckhand and spent 12 years living and working onboard yachts, both motor and sail. During this period, I qualified as a Captain (3000GT) and was lucky enough to cruise around the world on both private and some very busy charter yachts. I also had the honor of being Captain for HM Queen Elizabeth II. In 2006, with the impending arrival of my son, I decided to set up a yacht management company, allowing me to be shore-based. Over the course of 17 years, SYM Superyacht Management grew steadily and organically. We offered a very tailored service, ensuring all aspects of superyacht ownership were covered. The business grew to a point where we managed an enviable fleet of modern yachts, for a very loyal and repeat client base.
How did you go from owning a yacht management company to becoming part of Northrop & Johnson?
In the Spring of 2022, I sold my business to Northrop & Johnson and started working closely with the sales, charter, and leadership teams. In addition to being incredibly welcoming, friendly and supportive, the team-spirit that existed among everyone was striking. It is rare to find a brokerage
company that has this kind of approach and it was certainly very refreshing to see. As the months went by, I got involved in more deals, supported the team on various opportunities, and forged close working relationships. So when the time came for me to hand over the reins of the management company and the opportunity came up to lead the EU division, I decided to go for it.
How does your yacht management experience benefit N&J clients?
I feel very lucky to have started my career as a deckhand and to have onboard experience. This foundation gave me a real understanding of the industry. Following this, I became a shipyard Captain, which added another unique insight into the new construction side of the industry. Then came the development of my own company, which gave me firsthand experience building a team and developing a client base. I also learned the importance of being profitable and gained a good understanding of marketing needs, accounts, VAT, legal issues, and most importantly, understand client expectations extremely well.
What do you have planned for N&J in 2025 and beyond?
My mission is to further develop the N&J brand. I have lots of plans to achieve this in Europe.
