FOREWORD
From time to time when I meet yacht owners, I like to ask them what their favorite things about owning a yacht are. Of course, their replies are varied, but one that seems to come up time and time again is family time, i.e. the opportunity to spend quality time with both close and extended family. I guess when you think about it, it’s quite logical. In what other environment would you ever spend more than a day or two with your family? Even during the big holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving, most of us only spend a day or two together, perhaps three at the most. But on a yacht, the typical length of time to cruise is a week, even sometimes longer. That’s at least 21 meals together around the dining table, and seven balmy evenings to talk, reminisce, live, laugh and spend time with the people you care most about. Pretty amazing when you think about it. For many of us, the holiday season is associated with cold weather, but this year, why not get your family together and spend it on a yacht charter somewhere warm – The Bahamas perhaps, or the Caribbean? In this, our annual holiday issue, we focus on how to celebrate with your family during this special season, with advice from our charter experts. We also have a fantastic interview with the owner of the 220’ (67m) Benetti CALEX, for whom traveling with family was the main driver when he thought about building his yacht. We also have our usual features on style, auto, jewelry and gifts, but all very much with a holiday twist. And finally, we have a guide to chartering in 2024 and a yacht recommendation for each month of the year. So, enjoy the read and I hope it inspires you to spend that quality time with family. Happy holidays to you all. Daniel Ziriakus President & COO

Congratulations on your purchase of CALEX. Can you briefly tell us about her? In my, perhaps slightly biased, opinion, CALEX is a stunning looking yacht. Her lines are based on a successful platform from Benetti, which includes the slightly shorter 206’ (63m) SOUNDWAVE (formerly 11.11) and ARTISAN (formerly METIS), and latterly the 213’ (63m) ZAZOU and TRIUMPH. At 220’ (67m), CALEX is the biggest and most evolved version of Benetti’s vertical bow line series. THE BUILD Before CALEX you owned succession of Westports. What made you move away from them and consider a European yacht build? We built two yachts at the Westport shipyard in Port Angeles, Washington. Both build experiences were great and we were very happy with both of our yachts – we simply wanted to go bigger. We did look at building a larger yacht with Westport, but (although they were purchased by a steel shipbuilder) after a few years of back and forth in build discussions we all agreed that it wouldn’t work. Westport’s experience is primarily in fiberglass. Having been a guest onboard the 200’ (61m) Benetti, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, owned by John and Jeanette Staluppi, we saw firsthand the quality of a European build, so we began to consider European shipyards. My Broker Joe (Foggia) then sent us details for a Benetti project (what is now ARTISAN) and we visited the yacht in person during the Monaco Yacht Show in 2019. We loved the style, especially the vertical bow, and knew immediately that Benetti was the yard for us.
THE V ESS EL CALEX The 220’ (67m) CALEX is a fully-custom build from renowned Italian shipyard Benetti. Delivered to her owner in the spring of 2022, she is available to charter in the Caribbean this winter season. Accommodating 12 guests in seven cabins, her five guest decks include a 1,722 sqft (160 sqm) private owner’s deck featuring a large master cabin, private office, lounge area and a private exterior deck. She also includes two large VIP cabins located on the main deck with large picture windows and incredible views, and four further superb guest cabins on the lower deck.

How involved in the design of CALEX were you? Although CALEX is based on a pre-engineered platform with some boundaries, she was still commissioned from scratch from an interior point of view. My wife Holly and I conversed regularly with exterior designer Giorgio Cassetta, flying to Italy twice and then meeting via Zoom when international travel was not permitted. We already had a blueprint that we had worked on in some detail with Westport, so we knew exactly what we wanted to fit into the pre-engineered platform with which Benetti had already had such great success. We had strong opinions on the length and knew that a slight increase there would greatly help the look of the overall lines. So, we pushed Giorgio for an extra two meters in length and an increase in the size of the exterior deck areas to fit everything we required. The resulting profile is both contemporary and modern. The increased length also allowed for a slightly larger engine room to fit in selective catalytic reduction technology in order to reduce emissions from the diesel generators – something that is now mandatory. How important were the exterior entertaining areas in the design of CALEX? Holly and I regularly entertain our family and friends, and since we really only cruise in fair-weather climates, the exterior entertaining areas are what we particularly wanted to make work. We also like to keep active when on board, so we designed the sundeck to include an alfresco gym, allowing us to enjoy the views and sea breeze while working out underway. The whole sundeck is actually larger than Giorgio first imagined, but he made it work and it includes everything we require, including a large seating area, a Jacuzzi, and space for tender storage when required.

Do you have a favorite area onboard CALEX? My favorite area is probably the skylounge. It’s where we all gather after a day of activities. Our whole family is quite active, and while some guests might be off wakeboarding or waterskiing, others will be fishing or diving. Then we all come together to catch up at the end of the day in the skylounge. I also love the two exterior dining areas, especially the convivial round table on the bridge deck. We usually have dinner here, as it seats up to 20 guests, and have breakfast and lunch on the owner’s deck aft of the skylounge.

CRUISING EXPERIENCES Can you pick a highlight from your first season aboard? The crew took delivery of CALEX in Livorno at the end of May 2022 and undertook a shakedown cruise to Venice, where we then joined the yacht ourselves. We then spent four months cruising the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, with more than eighty guests cycling through the yacht over that period. Which are your favorite Mediterranean cruising grounds? We really enjoyed everywhere we cruised. During our time on board, we traveled from Venice down the Adriatic Coast to Croatia, where we spent almost three weeks. We then voyaged on to Montenegro and the Greek islands before heading to Malta, Sicily and then up the Amalfi Coast. We doubled back on ourselves from Naples to cruise back down the Amalfi Coast (with different guests) and then crossed over to Sardinia and Corsica. Every few weeks we picked up different guests, family and friends, who each spent between ten days and two weeks on board with us. We then headed over to the Balearics where we spent a few weeks before heading east to Barcelona and then cruising across to the French Riviera, working our way back along the coast towards Monaco. Favorite anchorage? Portofino, Italy Favorite island? Corsica Favorite restaurant? Quattro Passi in Nerano, Italy. It was so good we went back again. There were also a number of fantastic restaurants in Split where the menus had a heavy Italian influence.
Favorite beach club? Carpe Diem, Hvar, Croatia. However, my real favorite is the beach club on board CALEX. Is there one particular moment or experience that comes to mind when you think back on your time onboard? Everything about our time onboard was memorable. Our crew are exceptional as well. We have been lucky enough to find a fantastic captain who has pulled together a remarkable team, almost all of whom are still with us. They make every occasion memorable, going above and beyond. One thing that does come to mind when I think back on our four months onboard are the long lunches ashore. In America, we don’t tend to spend hours lingering over lunch, but in Europe, it really is one of the best ways to spend a pleasant afternoon. What are your cruising plans for CALEX? We would like to explore more and discover the coastline of Alaska, perhaps with some fishing along the way. We spent fifteen years on our previous yachts cruising the Sea of Cortez, which is one of our favorite areas. But we like to spend time in The Bahamas and Caribbean, where CALEX will spend this winter season. She will then return to the Mediterranean in May, after which we might venture further and explore some new areas we haven’t traveled to yet. And finally, do you see another yacht in your future? We are delighted with CALEX! We don’t have any plans for another yacht – but if we did it would be another Benetti. We had such an extraordinary build experience and really enjoyed working with Giorgio Cassetta as well as with Nick Bischoff, Sebastiano Fanizza, Marco De Cosmo and Mary Rosa Remedi – all with Benetti.

LOUIS XIII Celebrate with Limited Edition RARE CASK 42.1
Celebrate the holiday season with LOUIS XIII's limited-edition cognac RARE CASK 42.1. Whether enjoying a festive tipple or raising a glass to welcome in the new year, the third Rare Cask limited edition from the house is one to acknowledge. Launched in June 2023, only 775 decanters of RARE CASK 42.1 were made available globally. Named after an unexpected 42.1 percent ABV, the aromatic profile of RARE CASK 42.1 was discovered by LOUIS XIII’s Cellar Master, Baptiste Loiseau, in the cellars of Domaine du Grollet. The single tiercon that created the exceptional cognac comes from French oak trees that take over 100 years to reach maturity, containing precious eaux-de-vie sourced from Grande Champagne’s terroir. LOUIS XIII’s third Rare Cask limited edition follows the premiere of RARE CASK 42.6, which launched a decade ago. The tasting of the eaux-de-vie as they age is part of the lifelong purpose of each Cellar Master to preserve the LOUIS XIII Legacy. RARE CASK 43.8 was released in 2009 by previous Cellar Master Pierrette Trichet, and RARE CASK 42.6 in 2013 when Baptiste Loiseau and
Pierrette Trichet were collaborating. “While the singularity of a RARE CASK rests on the wonder of nature and the aging of eaux-de-vie, the know-how that it requires to produce is an art form, passed on from generation to generation, where each Cellar Master perpetuates the gestures of his predecessors,” shares Baptiste Loiseau. Loiseau’s discovery is an unexpected departure from the ordinary passage of time. Kept undisturbed, the eaux-de-vie evolves as the liquid deepens with intensity and mahogany hues. This aging process gives RARE CASK 42.1 its inimitable complexity – resulting in an extremely rare effect. To complement RARE CASK 42.1’s expression and rarity, the 775 limited-edition numbered decanters are handcrafted from black Baccarat crystal. Each decanter’s neck is dressed in gold and rhodium-finished details and finely engraved with quadrilobe patterns in reference to France’s Fleur-de-lys. The decanter is accompanied by a pair of glasses, each glass adorned with black quatrefoils and a serving pipette featuring a black medallion.

Frieze Los Angeles Los Angeles, California February 29 - March 3 Plans for this year’s installment of the Frieze Los Angeles art fair have grown exponentially since exhibitor applications closed over the summer. Stationed at spacious facilities at the Santa Monica Airport (making it particularly convenient for art fans who arrive by private jet), this annual conclave has entered into the pantheon of major league modern art shows since it debuted back in 2019. Part of that success is the inspired leadership of show director Christine Messineo, who has leveraged the dynamic shift of the epicenter of contemporary art from New York City to Los Angeles. The show “feels” very L.A. Last year’s event featured a special bespoke tent created by Thai architect Kulapat Yantrasast’s WHY studio; while not confirmed, it is a safe bet that another special event construction will headline this year’s show as well. In addition, over 120 of the world’s leading galleries showed last year, including local heroes like Baert and Château Shatto, as well as far-flung venues like Paris’ galerie frank elbaz, Dusseldorf’s Galerie Max Mayer and Seoul’s Hakgojae Gallery. Expect a pedigreed roster for this year. frieze.com
Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Scottsdale, Arizona January 20-28 When it comes to collectible cars, the name Barrett-Jackson shines brighter than most. And when it comes to Barrett-Jackson auctions, its flagship annual event held at the WestWorld of Scottsdale convention facility is the ne plus ultra of vintage car collecting. The 2023 auction resulted in over $184 million in sales of more than 1,900 no-reserve collectible vehicles. Highlights from last year include a 1989 Ferrari F40 that went for over $2.7 million and going back in time to a 1966 Shelby Mustang that hammered out at $770,000. Plus, the organization raised $1.89 million for charity via donated vehicle auctions in Scottsdale last year. Of course, with such a popular, bustling show, VIP access is critical to getting the best information on, and previews of, the desirable metal on the auction floor. Barrett-Jackson’s hospitality partner, On Location Experiences (onlocationexp.com), offers a super-premium Craig Jackson Skybox Experience from the owner’s private skybox that includes an approved bidder badge, early access to the opening night gala and allows for flexible, low-deposit payment options for your bids and more. But, when you consider the insider scuttlebutt you’ll be privy to, the $7,999 price tag might end up paying for itself. barrett-jackson.com

01 Omega Seamaster Ploprof 1200m Co-Axial Master Chronometer New for the 75th Anniversary of Omega’s legendary Seamaster watches, the new “Ploprof,” expertly revives one of the watchmaker’s most iconic, and formidable, Seamaster variations. The “Plongeur Professional,” which means “professional diver” in French, gave serious undersea explorers like Jacques Cousteau an alternative to needing a helium escape valve back when it was introduced in the early 1970s. Today’s version is powered by an extreme-tested 8912 automatic movement and rendered in O-MEGASTEEL (an alloy previously reserved just for Omega’s Ultra Deep Seamaster version). The new Ploprof can go deep, very deep, to 3,940’ (1,200 meters). While Omega has slimmed down this year’s model for better wearability, it still presents as imposing, unique and over-the-top as the original. It will, no doubt, make an even more profound statement back on deck. omegawatches.com

02 Ulysse Nardin UFO Marine Chronometer Frequent readers may remember the original Ulysse Nardin UFO marine chronometer/objet d’art when it debuted in the Summer 2021 issue of Navigator. The watchmaker is once again flexing its horological muscle with three new executions of the UFO, and these, alas, will be the last. Working in partnership with three key international retailers, this final UFO landing comes in green (for Japanese retailer Yoshida) with color-matched interior components, ice blue (for global retailer Bucherer) with the same matching color details, and champagne (for Southeast Asian retailer The Hour Glass) with a color-matched bronze-y hue to the interior components. Whichever color you might select, you can expect the same game-changing performance of the original UFO: A one-year power reserve when fully wound, the 675-component Caliber UN-902 oversized movement and three timezone timekeeping. And while the three color ways are new, the last of the UFOs are presented with the same signature weighted, ocean-wavefriendly, free-wobbling aluminum base and expertly-blown crystal-clear glass cover for the oval work of art. $68,600 will get you one of the 30 numbered limited editions of the three executions. ulysse-nardin.com

03 TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper The colorful Carrera Skipper was one of the watchmakers, now known as TAG Heuer’s, most visually iconic and yachtsman-preferred timepieces before it left the scene some 40 years ago. The story goes that the company, originally known as just Heuer, didn’t offer a watch specifically for racing sailors. In 1964, it entered an arrangement with watchmaker Aquastar to produce a co-branded chronograph with a sailing-specific regatta counter. Then, in 1967, when the New York Yacht Club entry of the INTREPID defended its America’s Cup title to win while wearing the watch, the Skipper was officially created to celebrate the victory. Now in modern form, the Carrera Skipper is encased in an updated 39mm steel case, with a modern TH20-06 movement to perform the chronograph tasks, including the special regatta countdown function at 3 o’clock. But in a vintage nod, an old-school “glass box” crystal lies over the whole boat. Work the lines with this gorgeous old-meetsnew timepiece. Aye, aye Skipper! tagheuer.com

04 Bulgari Serpenti Tubogas Infinity Bulgari’s Managing Director Antoine Pin is fond of saying, “You can’t have a genderless watch design without the ‘less’.” Unabashedly feminine, the coiling bracelet of the iconic Serpenti Tubogas Infinity grabs a woman’s arm like a Cleopatra-worthy snake trinket. The elegant arm-hug is crafted from coiling several meters of gold wire into the shortened form you see. And, for the first time, the biomorphic snake silhouette of this new Serpenti extends from the 35mm curved red gold case adorned with 44 brilliantcut diamonds and the 262-diamondpaved dial all the way down the double-twirl rose gold bracelet, which is set with 172 additional diamonds, for a total carat weight of 5.85-carats. This took some new, expert gemsetting approaches: Each “ring” of the bracelet is molded to its own unique dimensions before being polished and gem-set individually. An artisanal object fit for a queen (of the Nile?). bulgari.com

01 Rolls-Royce Spectre For the modern chairperson Rolls-Royce makes no bones about calling the latest Spectre two-door fastback coupe “the Rolls-Royce that changes everything.” After a year of testing over 2.5 million kilometers in every kind of extreme weather, the all-electric Spectre is now a reality (and the carmaker has committed to making all of its vehicles electric by 2030). For the two separately excited synchronous motors (SSMs), Rolls-Royce engineers took pains to replicate the maker’s signature “wafting,” instant torque, only one perceptible gear, magic-carpetride operation. The combined power rating for the two motors is 550kW, or the combustion engine equivalent of over 700hp. The average range rating is 329 miles between charges. Exterior refinements that increase the Spectre’s aerodynamics as well as state-of-the-art cabin and performance-enhancing technology has been added to make it the most connected Rolls-Royce in history. But on the inside? Pure, bespoke comfort and luxury, because, as you already know, no two Rolls-Royces are exactly the same. rolls-roycemotorcars.com

02 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS For those who need speed The Boxster mid-engine concept was introduced 30 years ago. And, as they say, the rest is history. But take that up to today, and the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS drop-top is the new reigning bruiser in the German maker’s mid-engine lineup. After all, it carries the same high-revving, naturally aspirated engine as the 911 GT3 cup racing car. So, performance is a given: The 4.0-liter, six-banger Boxster engine revs up to a 9,000rpm redline, generates 493hp, 331 pound-feet of torque hitting a 0-60mph giddyup of 3.2 seconds and a top track speed of 191mph. The fleetness is a pretty special gift in itself but the present isn’t fully revealed until you unwrap the 718 Spyder RS’s unique lightweight (40 pound) manual soft top, a two-part construction that can be stored in the vehicle itself. Only then do you get a full gander at one of the car world’s most exciting open-air interiors. porsche.com/usa

03 BMW X7 For the person who moves people With new Swarovski crystal-enhanced “iconic glow” headlamps and new remote parking assist options for the new model year, the BMW X7 continues its reign at the front of the luxury SUV pack. In fact, BMW refers to the X7 as an SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle). Still, the appeal of the three-row, seven-seater is decidedly undeniable. Under the hood, three separate power trains are offered: A six-cylinder fuel/48V mild hybrid in the four-wheel XDrive40i variant; a lower-output six-cylinder fuel/48V mild hybrid in four-wheel xDrive 40d; and a V8 fuel/48V mild hybrid in the four-wheel M60i xDrive variant. But it’s the cabin space and extra comfort that draws families to this vehicle: Heated seats upfront (and, optionally, in the second row), a power-operated split tailgate, a panoramic glass roof and more. Shuttling the kids to soccer practice just got much more luxurious. bmwusa.com

04 Range Rover P440e For the eco-conscious explorer in your life While the debut and ongoing success of the re-launched Land Rover Defender has caused quite a stir lately, for a vehicle that feels like you could drive it through the walls of a 15th-century monastery and then dust off the rubble, you want a full-on Range Rover. As a new extended-range plug-in hybrid version, the Range Rover P440e takes away not a single whit from that legendary toughness. While the estimated range for EV-only driving is around 48 miles, we are talking about a decidedly heavy vehicle that loves to go off-road. At nearly 50 miles, you could four-wheel the entire Grand Canyon in full-EV mode, but we don’t recommend that. Real-life operation is, of course, longer lasting, as the 105kW, quick-charging electric power train is married to a 3.0-liter six-cylinder conventional fuel engine. With the P440e, you can continue to expect the same uncanny blend of interior comfort and luxury with rock-crawlingly legitimate off-road chops… and appreciate the off-road experience while minimizing your carbon footprint, to boot. landroverusa.com

It’s easy to believe that just because you are paying a lot of money to fly privately, everything should flow seamlessly. However, this is not always the case, especially during the peak holiday season. Follow these six easy steps to increase your odds of attaining perfection. 1. Choose the right aircraft While there are four main categories of private jets – light, midsize, super-midsize and large cabin – there are around a hundred different types of private jets across those categories available for charter and jet cards. Within each cabin category, there are differences in the number of seats, cabin height, width, length, baggage capacity, range and accessible airports. The total weight – passengers, pilots, baggage and even catering – impacts the range, as does weather and runway length. All of this makes choosing the right aircraft of great importance since those flights to the yacht could be with more passengers or luggage than your normal trips. Giving your provider as much information as possible will help them ensure they match you to the right aircraft type. A good broker can help guide you through the process and ensure your flights have the amenities you want. They can also help you sort through the options and explain price differences between operators. 2. Read the charter contract If you are chartering your flight to your yacht on a one-off basis, pay attention to the cancellation terms. While fractional and jet card programs typically allow you to cancel or change your departure time from a day or two to just hours before you are scheduled to leave, many on-demand charter contracts can’t be canceled after you sign them and others may have cancellation deadlines of a week to a month prior to your departure. Unlike the airlines, you don’t get a flight credit if you cancel; you lose your money. 3. Order catering at least a week in advance Many flyers don’t get around to ordering catering until a day or two before departure. It’s natural, as who wants to choose what they will eat a month in advance? However, since Covid, many caterers that serviced private jets closed or stopped servicing the market. In other cases, supply chain challenges mean that specific brands and products can be hard to find on short notice. If you have special catering requests – brands or hard-to-find products – sending in your catering request at least a week before departure gives providers extra time to make sure they can find what you want.
4. Have a Plan B Jet card programs typically get a replacement aircraft at no additional cost if the first provider cancels, either for a mechanical issue or crew shortage or if the aircraft owner decides not to make their airplane available. In the case of an on-demand charter, there is a requote. Your provider will look for a replacement aircraft. Depending on where you are going, the price can be as much as 50% higher on short notice. You can either pay or get a refund and make alternative arrangements – not ideal if your yacht is waiting. Make sure to ask your provider what plans they have to secure a replacement aircraft if something goes amiss. Good brokers will consider this when sourcing aircraft. 5. Make special plans for special events and peak periods A big perk of flying privately is avoiding crowded airport terminals. This is particularly valuable if you are flying into major events such as Formula 1, the Monaco Yacht Show, the Super Bowl, The Masters or hot spots like Ibiza or the Greek Isles during the summer. However, during these peak times, airports often restrict the number of private jets, limit parking and allocate landing and departure slots. In some places, it’s not as organized as it should be and having to reposition your jet to an alternate airport could cost you. While it’s nice to be able to book your flight last minute, for these types of events, farther in advance is better as it gives your provider the most possible time and opportunity to get the arrival and departure times you want. 6. Don’t get tripped up on the way to the airport As you probably know, FBOs can be hidden with little signage. To make sure you or your driver don’t get lost, find the FBO on a map before your trip and ensure your ground transportation service has that information. Many airports have multiple FBOs and at a few airports, the same provider has multiple FBOs, increasing the chance you or your driver could end up at the wrong place, often miles away on the other side of the field. Whether returning to your favorite destination, your homeaway-from-home or heading off on a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience, it’s time together that is most valuable. At Exclusive Resorts, Club Members have the option to pass their Membership down through generations. One Member, who was passed down a membership from her grandparents, said Exclusive Resorts is about creating a lasting legacy of travel for generations to come. “I have so many memories of our Exclusive Resorts trips. From being surprised on my 16th birthday with trip of a lifetime to Paris to celebrating my grandfather’s life in Real del Mar after his passing, I now realize how much work goes into building a special vacation and I appreciate how easy The Club makes it.” For many, an Exclusive Resorts membership is an investment in the future of travel for the next generation. “No investment portfolio or second home will ever match the value of your time,” says Rachel Regan, SVP of Global Sales. “As we accumulate wealth, we plan not only for our own futures but also for the futures of those we love most. There are possessions that we guard for our next of kin: a beloved
timepiece, a family heirloom. The asset of experience, however, is far more challenging to ensure for our families. An Exclusive Resort membership does just that.” Exclusive Resorts has a portfolio with 400 luxury residences and curated travel experiences in more than 75 sought-after destinations, accessible only to The Club’s closed network of 4,300 members. Every family is matched with an expert ambassador who acts as a personal travel planner and learns your family's needs to assist in all travel planning. In addition, they act as your personal liaison with our team of concierges. Our on-site concierge team is dedicated to Exclusive Resorts Members and takes care of every detail, big or small. Like any club, Members pay a one-time initiation fee (starting at $175,000 for a 10-year plan) and annual dues based on the number of nights they would like to travel each year. To celebrate the holiday season, Exclusive Resorts would like to offer Northrop & Johnson clients $20,000 off the Membership Fee when they join by December 31, 2023. The world is your oyster with Northrop & Johnson Creating a unique vacation experience has never been easier. By taking the time to truly understand your interests and how you like to travel, your Northrop & Johnson charter experts can arrange a tailormade, luxurious yacht charter that’s unique to you. Still, we all need a bit of inspiration now and again, so read on and discover some of our most popular charter types and start dreaming about your next yachting vacation. Yacht charter explained A superyacht charter is the ultimate customized vacation. So customized, in fact, that it can differ from one guest to another, even within the same charter party. For some, it is the chance to spend quality time with family and friends, while for others, it is the opportunity to explore the world in absolute luxury. Whatever the style of the charter, a superyacht is the ultimate platform for a truly diverse and unforgettable water-centered vacation. Explore our luxury charter ideas Start with who you are traveling with – Northrop & Johnson has a range of vacation ideas that are ideal for kids, older and multigenerational families, couples and even groups of friends. Then dive into what you like to do; from exploration to active charters, we have it all, whatever the time or destination. Looking for a different vacation experience? Our charter brokers can create perfect pairings to give you the best of both worlds. And for those wanting to take it a step further, Northrop & Johnson has a comprehensive number of partners to complement every part of your yacht charter experience. Whether you are considering taking a private jet to join your yacht, looking to spend some time ashore at either end of your charter or planning to berth in a top marina, our partners offer Northrop & Johnson clients exclusive rates and services. When and where should I charter? Different countries are “in season” at different times of the year. If you are planning a summer charter, consider the cruising grounds of the Mediterranean. With countless islands and mainland harbors to choose from, plenty of distractions ashore and cuisine to suit all tastes, this area is popular for all types of charter. Alternatively, the top charter spots in the winter months are in The Bahamas and Caribbean. When considering family charters, the best cruising grounds tend to be those with great beaches, warm climates and safe waters. For those with older children, the Pacific Northwest, Australia, New Zealand and Scandinavia all offer awe-inspiring terrain and fantastic wildlife. Regardless of where and when you choose to cruise, if you have your heart set on a particular destination, focus on yachts that charter in that area.

What type of yacht should I consider? Our charter brokers know all the yachts and their crews and have a special skill in matching them to your charter party. You may favor the style of a modern motor yacht, the exhilarating romance of a sailing yacht or the history of a classic yacht. Most yachts have certain things in common, but they are all unique and offer a range of features and amenities. Added to this, most charter yachts only operate within specific cruising grounds, so although there are no hard and fast rules as to which to choose first – yacht or cruising area – the time of year you wish to charter and the location you want to discover will largely determine the yachts available. Of course, it really depends on your budget. Prices vary significantly depending on where you are cruising, the size of the yacht and the duration of your trip. Whatever your choice, you can be assured of the utmost comfort and luxury with air-conditioning along with excellent leisure facilities. Charter costs explained Most yacht charter fees fall into two distinct categories: inclusive or expense-based and it depends on the contract under which the yacht is cruising. Considered to be the industry’s leading point of reference, the MYBA Charter Agreement (MYBA, The Worldwide Yachting Association) contract is the most commonly used. Under the MYBA contract, the charter fee is priced as a base rate that covers everything linked to the yacht (rental, insurance, crew)
but is exclusive of expenses or anything specifically for the client. This includes everything from fuel costs to berthing fees and provisioning. In general, any additional expenses are paid in an Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) of 30 to 35 percent of the base charter fee. Paid in advance and managed by the captain, the APA remains the charterer’s funds and any amount unspent at the end of the charter is refunded. Fuel often accounts for the largest portion of the APA but it’s important to keep in mind that fuel is not used simply for moving the yacht but also for electricity, air conditioning and other hotel load items. There is no mark up on the costs of food and fuel. Inclusive charters provide an up-front rate. Note that taxes or value-added tax (VAT) may apply based on where you are coming from and where you are going. VAT and other taxes are generally not included in the base price of a yacht charter. And finally, what is basic charter etiquette? A superyacht charter may be all about the freedom a yacht provides but there are still some unspoken rules of onboard etiquette that should be followed by all the guests on board. From treating the crew with respect to regarding the yacht as you would your own home, simple manners apply. When it comes to the crew, it is customary to leave a gratuity. While the level is completely at the charterer’s discretion, a general guideline figure is between 10 and 20 percent of the base charter fee.

They may not be the classic Caribbean cruising grounds but with more and more superyachts coming to experience the perfect climate, shallow waters and year-round cooling trade winds, it was only a matter of time that the Turks and Caicos islands joined the luxury travel map. Providenciales (or Provo, as it is better known) is not the capital of the archipelago but it is the hub for superyachts visiting the Turks and Caicos. Home to the Amanyara resort and the beach at Grace Bay (proclaimed by many to be the best beach in the whole of the Caribbean), it is also the ideal launchpad to discover the third largest coral reef in the world. While cruising around the north of Providenciales, drop anchor and tender ashore to the idyllic Amanyara resort – the perfect place for some “downtime” on land. Known for its white-sand beach and sweeping rocky coves, the Asian-inspired resort is the epitome of serenity. Enjoy a Mediterranean-esque alfresco lunch at the Beach Club before a treatment at the Amanyara spa or a siesta on the beach beneath the shade of umbrellas. Refreshed and rejuvenated, head to The Bar for sunset cocktails (try the Amanyara Mojito – a unique take on the classic, topped with Champagne), followed by dinner on the open-air terrace at The Restaurant. Gourmands will be delighted by the delectable offerings on the Asian-inspired menu. Combining classic Asian and modern Mediterranean dishes, Chef Terry uses seasonal produce combined with the catch-of-the-day for the freshest sushi and sashimi or spiny Caribbean lobster. What Newport is to New England, Palm Beach is to Florida. For more than half a century, the city has been the golden dream of the Sunshine State; the traditional winter home of American aristocracy. Separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway, Palm Beach is known for its upscale lifestyle, luxurious resorts and sprawling oceanfront estates – including the former Kennedy family estate – and boasts 200 feet of ocean frontage. The beaches in Palm Beach are beautiful, more so for the waterborne as with all the private estates, access can be limited without a yacht. The cultural scene is also superb, thanks to a wealth of patrons dedicated to the arts. With so much wealth congregated in one small area, the island is home to some of Florida’s most exclusive restaurants, including Bice and Le Bilboquet. Cruise alongside icefields and discover the glacial ecosystem by kayak. Spend time ashore on Baranof Island or around Desolation Sound, hiking or cycling the trails through scenic forests, and discover the remarkable wildlife that has inhabited the region for thousands of years. “Alaska really has some of the most remote and enchanted sights you’re ever likely to see,” says Diana. “It pays to have a guide on board having the local knowledge to help you explore safely.”
We are rarely looking for just one thing from a vacation. We want adventure but also comfort, we want to be pampered while leading a life of barefoot, carefree days, we want unique, cultural experiences, but we also dream of lying mindlessly by the pool. “Cruising through the Aeolian Islands on board the SKYFALL, you can have it all,” says senior charter broker Fiona Maureso. A short hop from Sicily’s northeastern coast, the beautiful archipelago is the height of glamour – Panarea is the white-hot party destination, favored by Italian aristocrats and designers, while in contrast the still active volcanic islands of Stromboli and Vulcano add another dimension to any yacht charter. The yacht VIVALDI Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast is now firmly on the map as a desirable cruising ground for yacht charters, and for very good reason. With more than 1,400 islands, beautiful beaches and pristine nature, the entire region was seemingly made for the waterborne. Add to this the interesting historical sites waiting to be explored ashore and you have the perfect combination for a compelling yacht charter. Such are the famed attractions of the Dalmatian Coast that in the summer season, its enchanting beauty risks being obscured by crowds. Fortunately, once you step on board a yacht like VIVALDI, as recommended by charter broker Sarah Piggin, charm prevails. “VIVALDI features plenty of contemporary amenities – the beds are blissfully comfortable, the accommodations luxurious – but everything is understated, harmonizing with the surrounding Adriatic blue waters. Outside, the decks are a delight, with space for those seeking a quiet place to read or contemplate the glorious vistas beyond the sundeck Jacuzzi.” 08 The 96’9” (29.5m) VIVALDI is available to charter in the Mediterranean next summer. Charters start at €80,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 10 guests.

Balearics The yacht RoMa
For a dose of old-school glamor, head to the sun-drenched Balearics for a late-season charter aboard the tri-deck motor yacht RoMa, as recommended by charter broker Anna Franciszkiewicz. As you discover the coastline of Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic islands, relax alongside RoMa’s exceptionally large Jacuzzi, perhaps taking a dip in the bubbling waters. Drop anchor in a scenic cove on the neighboring island of Menorca, the Mallorca of yesteryear, with a slower pace of life to match, and jump in to enjoy RoMa’s large array of water toys. The beautifully designed RoMa features a large beach club allowing for easy access to the water, be it for the toys or for a refreshing swim. It also comes in handy when cruising the Bohemian island of Ibiza where beach clubs are the way of life, although aboard RoMa you can have it all – time on board anchored in a secluded bay, time ashore discovering the island’s beautiful interior, or dancing the night away in the clubs and bars of Ibiza town. 09 The 203’5” (62m) RoMa is available to charter in the Balearics next summer. Charters start at €370,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.

The Bahamas The yacht NEENAH
For those looking for a luxurious and exclusive way to vacation with the whole family, a superyacht is an unrivaled option. Space is arguably the most coveted luxury aboard a yacht, and in this regard, the 164’ (49.99m) NEENAH provides the perfect base for a multigenerational charter. From a variety of easily converted cabins – perfect for children and nannies – to separate lounging and dining areas, an all-decks elevator and a sprawling sundeck, she suits every family arrangement. Added to this, the toy collection, professional and friendly crew and endless entertainment options, and fun at sea is guaranteed for everyone. NEENAH may be the ideal yacht, but the cruising grounds can also make or break the charter experience. The most suitable waters for family charters are those with islands in close proximity to each other. Regularly moving from place to place, you never again need to suffer the dreaded “I’m bored” refrain from restless youngsters. Senior charter broker Cecile Blin recommends The Bahamas for family cruising. “The 700-plus Bahamian chain of islands are just 50 miles south of the U.S. coast of Florida but offer a world of difference for the waterborne,” says Cecile. “Providing the perfect combination of fun and laid-back charm, with ample island-hopping opportunities, they allow for a new vibe every day.” 10 The 164’ (49.99m) NEENAH is available to charter in The Bahamas. Charters start at $255,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 12 guests.

NOVEMBER
Red Sea For those looking to experience something genuinely unique and off the beaten track, there are attractions in the Red Sea that range from pristine cruising grounds and sub-tropical atolls on the marine side, to desert trekking, hiking volcanoes and traditional life on land. Often referred to as “the Maldives of the Middle East,” the coastline of Saudi Arabia and the off-lying islands were seemingly made for the waterborne. The crystal-clear waters are home to abundant coral reefs with more than 300 species of coral and thousands of species of fish. Northrop & Johnson partners IGY Marinas are part of the Sindalah development, a main gateway to the Red Sea Project that encompasses an archipelago of more than 90 islands lying between Umluj and the city of Al Wajh. “With the Red Sea located just one day’s cruising distance from the Mediterranean Sea, Sindalah and the surrounding cruising grounds offer a new season for the superyacht set,” says charter director Natascha Weber.

St. Barths
The yacht KATHARINE Where better to recharge those empty winter batteries than anchored off the chicest island in the Caribbean – St. Barths. Spend a few days acclimatizing to “island time” on any of the seventeen beaches that fringe the island before getting party ready for the island’s legendary New Year’s Eve showdown. “New Year’s Eve in St. Barths is all about the laid-back vibes,” says charter and sales broker Steve Elario. “Anchor in Gustavia and enjoy cocktails and canapés on board the 201’1” (61.3m) KATHARINE. The main aft deck offers spacious waterside seating, perfect for taking in the views of the legendary fireworks display over the harbor.” Celebrating the new year on a superyacht allows you to have the freedom to simply enjoy the party without stepping ashore.” And once the celebrations are over, where better to jump-start your new year’s wellness resolutions than on board. “KATHARINE’s expansive sundeck is where guests will likely spend most of their time while aboard, either unwinding in the large Jacuzzi, working out in the gym, lounging on the sunbeds or dining alfresco.” 11 The 201’1” (61.3m) KATHARINE is available to charter in the Caribbean. Charters start at $335,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to twelve guests.

SCOPE
01 Cannes Yachting Festival The fall yacht show season kicked off in September with the Cannes Yachting Festival. Among the fine yachts on display in the Old Port and Port Canto were six of Northrop & Johnson’s finest offerings. Representatives from Northrop & Johnson’s brokerage and charter teams were on hand to discuss market trends and guide clients through the show, while an array of exclusive social activities, hosted by Northrop & Johnson, took place throughout the week. Northrop & Johnson also announced its partnership with VisionF Yachts during the show, where VisionF Yachts unveiled their latest delivery, the custom pink-hulled VisionF 80 catamaran. The dynamic new Turkish shipyard is rapidly becoming known for its innovative designs, sustainability credentials and value for money. 02 Monaco memories The 32nd edition of the Monaco Yacht Show welcomed yachting enthusiasts from all over the world to view some of the world’s largest and most spectacular yachts berthed in the prestigious Port Hercule. Held during the last week of September, the clement weather gave the glitzy show an added sparkle as iconic yachts took to the industry stage. Northrop & Johnson maintained a significant presence and the brokers more than had their hands full negotiating the purchase and sale of some of the largest yachts on the market. The Northrop & Johnson team were joined by strategic partners to host a superb social calendar, which included happy hours on the N&J terrace where guests relaxed on the comfortable furniture provided by Dedon and Verge Yacht Design. The annual Captains’ Party, hosted with Moore & Co, Newcoast, GMT, Engineered Yacht Solutions, Lumenautica and Legend Yacht Transport, welcomed captains to enjoy great food and entertainment, while the Friday saw clients mingle with valued partners and their guests for the return of the Signature Evening Under the Stars. Attendees included partners NetJets, IGY Marinas, Airbus Corporate Jets, Louis XIII and Four Seasons Yachts. 02

03 Fort Lauderdale reigns supreme Staying stateside, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show saw crowds come out for what has now become the world’s largest boat show. Yachts from the Northrop & Johnson fleet attracted a lot of attention during the week and were inundated with viewings. Northrop & Johnson also treated clients to the N&J Signature Experience. Two Northrop & Johnson private and luxurious locations – the Show Lounge and Private Estate – welcomed clients with a range of exceptional amenities, including a valet service to and from the estate and show with partners Lucid Motors, and a tender service with Zeelander. The Show Lounge featured furniture from Dedon and Verge Yacht Design, while over at the Private Estate clients enjoyed hospitality from Julie Jones, Chopin Imports and Yacht Chandlers. N&J’s partners and sponsors, including NetJets, Northern Trust, Airbus Corporate Jets, Exclusive Resorts, Impression by Secrets, Louis XIII, IGY Marinas, Tim Davis and Quantum Stablizers, hosted client events throughout the week, while the annual Captains party was sponsored by MHG Insurance, Legend Yacht Transport, Newcoast, Engineered Yacht Solutions and Lumenautica. 04 Newport Brokerage Boat Show The threat of a rare New England hurricane didn’t keep attendees from venturing to the beautiful coastal town of Newport for the annual Newport Brokerage Boat Show and, as the weather gods would have it, the weather passed quickly and the sun shone down on the Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, making for a fantastic show. Featuring a line-up of stunning sailing yachts the show, which is held in conjunction with the Newport International Boat Show, is the largest collection of in-water boats and yachts in the New England area and was attended by buyers and yachting enthusiasts from all over the US.
