WE HEAR IT ALL THE TIME: “WHICH DO YOU WANT FIRST, THE GOOD NEWS OR THE BAD NEWS?”

The bad news is necessary to solve problems and move forward. The good news is the icing on the cake, the treat for resolving the bad news. So in this issue of Navigator, I have good news and bad news. Let’s start with the bad news, which is a tough problem to solve. The U.S. leads the world in yacht owners, yet the boat-building industry in the U.S. is suffering. Even when the euro was at $1.30, there simply weren’t yachts being built in the U.S. But why? U.S. builders have the ability to build world-class yachts and offer competitive pricing and quality; shipyards are dedicated, contracts and business are easy to conduct – even still, Burger, Broward, Trinity, Derecktors and Intermarine are either gone or struggling. There is a bit of light in the darkness, however. Christensen is fighting the good fight, and both Delta and Westport continue with solid orders, thankfully. Palmer Johnson has creatively branched out to a more global sport boat market.

Across the pond, Italian builder Benetti leads the world in number of yachts built, and has an excellent order book. The Dutch builders Feadship and Amels are both very healthy and the majority of European yards are doing well. So what is the difference-making factor: styling, aggressive pricing, greater worldwide name recognition, or perhaps it’s all of the above? With the euro at virtual parity with the dollar, there is a very competitive cost argument. U.S. builders must market more aggressively on a global level, and price competitively to stay in the game. There are challenging times ahead for such an important part of the yachting industry. It is going to be interesting to watch the new construction arena. In the “Shape of Things To Come” article on page 64, writer Nancy Matthews offers insight into what the future of new construction, design and trends holds.

And then there’s the good news. It‘s spring! After emerging from a long, snowy, brutal winter, people are ready to go boating. The boats are fresh from the winter work list, crew are energetic — ready to create fun for owners and guests — and the warm waters beckon. Also in this issue of Navigator, we enjoy the icing on the cake by suggesting top summer wines for your palate with “Summer Sips” on page 44, having a look at incredible automobiles of yesterday with “Classic Cars” on page 59, taking a peek behind the curtain of Arnold & Son’s impressive watch manufacturing heritage on page 56 and so much more. So, as the spring breezes flow into summer, kick back on the aft deck with a lovely rosé and have a think about how to solve the bad news, then raise a glass to the good!

Wishing you smooth sailing, Kevin Merrigan, President

05 Arnold & Son Brand Partnership In early 2015, Northrop & Johnson aligned with global strategic partner Arnold & Son. A tradition in watchmaking, Arnold & Son has a sophisticated history of more than 250 years of exquisite craftsmanship and design. Renowned as the father of modern marine timekeeping, John Arnold created a watch with chronometers in the 18th century to adequately determine longitude at sea. This innovation quickly established Arnold & Son as the official watchmaker of the Royal Navy, among other impressive clients. Arnold & Son timepieces not only are exceptionally precise, they also are exquisitely designed — London’s British Museum exhibits several pieces. John Arnold and his son Roger dedicated themselves to a quest for absolute precision; the company continues this mission today. The venture gives Arnold & Son an opportunity to draw on its deep-rooted maritime past. As a partner, Arnold & Son has a golden opportunity to participate in all of Northrop & Johnson’s events. “Our presence at these events will give us direct access to an important customer group. We’ll be able to showcase our timepieces through private previews in a glamorous environment. Magazines, social networks and virtual communities also will be part of the partnership, keeping followers up to speed on the latest developments in our joint activities,” says Fabien Dutriaux of Arnold & Son. “We believe that experience and know-how in our industry combined with the right type of affiliations will make both Northrop & Johnson and our partners stronger in the luxury lifestyle sector,” says Northrop & Johnson CEO Kevin 06 Merrigan. Arnold & Son offers ingenuity, a dedication to preeminence and a time-honored heritage, ideals that perfectly align with those held by Northrop & Johnson. Our strategic partnership is founded on these principles. 06 Berth Sales In March 2015, Northrop & Johnson began offering berth sales services through our Antibes office. Due to the enduring popularity of yachting and the constant increase of yachts to the global fleet, procuring a berth in a popular port can be a difficult task. NORTHROP & JOHNSON’S EXCEPTIONALLY TALENTED & KNOWLEDGEABLE CHARTER BROKERS OFFER THEIR BEST ADVICE ON FAVORITE LUXURY YACHT CHARTER DESTINATIONS...

“The gorgeous archipelago of the Balearic Islands is my favorite place in the world. These islands and their stunning landscapes offer absolutely everything that the most discerning charterer could possibly dream of. From white sand beaches that stretch for kilometers to cities breathing history to secluded coves surrounded by olive tree-laden cliffs that dramatically plunge into the deepest turquoise waters, the Balearic Islands offer some of the world’s most impressive sights. These Spanish isles also are home to exciting activities, such as exclusive shopping, where one can find the world’s most renowned brands or local markets with the freshest produce and handicrafts, delectable gastronomy, including plenty of Michelin-star-studded restaurants, and a lively nightlife scene that begs the company of the elite from Europe and beyond. The Balearics are a jewel nestled right on Europe’s Mediterranean doorstep; everyone is welcome to share in the treasures.” Natascha Weber Charter Broker, Palma

“My favorite charter destination is the Exumas, Bahamas. I’ve been lucky to spend a lot of time cruising these islands; of all my travels, the Exumas tops my list. There is something for everyone there, from the world-class casinos and nightlife of Atlantis in Nassau to fun-for-the-family waterparks to Highborne Cay’s premier under-the-sea sights, including brightcolored sea fans and spotted eagle rays, which you’ll see swimming right under the yacht. Adventure lovers will enjoy riding the WaveRunners around Norman’s Cay and sunbathers can lounge on the crescentshaped beaches, fringed with mangroves. Staniel Cay is the unofficial ‘heart of the Exumas.’ There, the adventure continues as you explore the limestone caves of Rocky Dundas — a personal favorite — cast a line while deep-sea fishing and feed the world-famous swimming pigs. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park on Warderwick Wells is home to rock formations with natural ‘blowholes’ — which is quite a stunning sight to see. For those with an adventurous spirit, the Exumas is the perfect charter locale.” Jessica Engelmann Charter Broker, Fort Lauderdale

“Indonesia’s Raja Ampat (West Papua) is the most stunning, unspoiled area I have ever seen. Whatever you fancy, be it hiking, diving or other watersport activities, Raja Ampat won’t disappoint. Visit Mioskon Island, known for enormous schools of fish and spectacular corals. If you’re lucky, you can spot pygmy seahorses and walking sharks. Kri Island offers more spectacular diving. Penemu has a walking trail leading up to a magnificent lookout with a view of the lagoon, rocky islands and limestone domes. Batu Rufus is a good site for snorkeling, diving and paddleboarding. North of Mansuar, snorkel at the manta ray cleaning station and visit the Arborek village where locals are devoted to conservation and protection of the environment. Visit The Passage, where strong currents promise an exhilarating ride. Other highlights of a Raja Amput luxury yacht charter include the famous Tamulol cave with an idyllic saltwater lagoon and a nature walk with a local villager in search of the spectacular, exotic looking birds of paradise.” Lies Sol Charter Broker, Asia

Our exceptionally knowledgeable and skilled yacht brokerage division offers clients a bespoke yacht sales program, whether purchasing or selling a yacht.

With brokerage offices in Fort Lauderdale, Antibes, Newport, Palma, Holland, New York City, San Diego and offices in Asia, including Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand, Northrop & Johnson is able to provide top-quality service around the globe. Managing Director and Yacht Broker Bart Kimman of Northrop & Johnson Asia opens up about his position at Northrop & Johnson, the state of the markets in Asia and shares advice on purchasing or selling a yacht.

Q What is your background within the yachting industry and how did you come to be a yacht broker? A My relationship to yachting goes back to childhood. My family owned a shipyard and distributed Mercury outboards in the Netherlands. Much of our time was spent messing about with boats. I then got into sailing and racing, first in dinghies and later in ocean-racing yachts. After a professional career in the finance industry, in 2002 I decided that my last career should be in the yachting industry and I started as a yacht broker.

01 Bart Kimman, Managing Director and Yacht Broker of Northrop & Johnson Asia

N A V I G A T O R S P O T L I G H T

What is your best advice to a first-time yacht buyer? Charter a yacht at least once before you make the decision to purchase. What is the most important facet to a successful yacht sale? I believe that trust is the most important facet to a successful yacht sale. If the client trusts the broker and his or her expertise, more often than not the client will be pleased not only with the yacht, but also with the sale process. What, in your opinion, are the biggest trends in yacht design? Motor yachts are becoming more fuel efficient with longer range and they are beginning to offer more interior volume. Sailing yachts are becoming quicker. I also believe the popularity of catamarans is going to grow rapidly in the near future.

In your opinion, where do you see the global yacht brokerage market going in the next five years? I believe that bigger is not always better and that professionalism and yacht expertise are the keys to our industry. Brokers must know their clients and manage their expectations — these are essential to continued success in the yachting industry in the future. A few years ago, the Asia market was untamed territory for yacht sales. How has the market progressed and where do you see it going? Today, Asia remains a growth market for the marine industry. The lack of infrastructure and yachting culture are two main restrictions; however, demand for large yachts is increasing with some 10 custom superyachts sold since 2012. What makes N&J stand out among other brokerage companies? Northrop & Johnson was and still is the first global yacht brokerage with a broad representation in Asia. This global reach gives our brokers the ability to accommodate our clients anywhere around the world.

What are your five must-have features on a yacht? My five must-have features are an anchor, paper charts, good company, fair weather and fun. What services does Northrop & Johnson provide for clients in Asia? Northrop & Johnson’s Asia offices provide yacht sales of both new-build and pre-owned yachts, yacht charters with preeminent expertise in the exotic destinations of Asia, including Indonesia, the Andaman Islands, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, and yacht management and yacht support services, which is a must for large yachts in the area with limited service facilities, inexperienced crew, cultural differences and demanding owners.

Located just steps from the water of one of the French Riviera’s best beaches, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat’s Paloma Beach is nestled in a small cove, sheltered from the winds and the summer crowds (01). This impressive little haunt is an absolute favorite of the elite jet set and celebrities, who stop into this hot spot to sip rosé and dine on the fresh daily catch. Here, the crystal clear waters soothe the soul and the stunning views of Beaulieu, Cap d’Ail and the cliffs at Eze have been enjoyed by many since 1948. The exclusive yet laidback Paloma Beach offers a chic, relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is the perfect spot for an evening meal ashore while on anchor in the beautiful South of France. In addition to offering a one-of-a-kind dining experience, Paloma Beach also is home to a unique and exceptional beach scene — lapped by the cerulean sea, the pebble-laden beach beckons. Said to offer the “the best naps since 1948,” enjoy fabulous siestas and sunning in absolute comfort for just €23 euros a day. This price includes a beachside mattress, warm shower and changing room; towels can be rented for €6. After several hours of basking in the sun, take a dip in the sapphire sea (04) — swimming here is safe and supervised by lifeguards. The beach is open daily from Easter Sunday through the end of September. Take the tender to Paloma Beach at 9 a.m. and enjoy your prime sun spot — which pairs perfectly with a bottle of rosé — until 7 p.m., after which you should grab a table for a true South of France-favorite dining experience. Paloma Beach after dark boasts a magical atmosphere. Candlelight and gentle waves set the perfect tone, but if you’re looking for a more secluded table for two, the restaurant will set up a romantic spot on the dock (03). Dinner service at Paloma Beach begins at the start of the Monaco Grand Prix and closes at the end of August. Dive into your dining experience when you choose from a renowned wine and champagne list. Then move on to the fresh and impressive menu items that have patrons clamoring to go back to this striking French Riviera restaurant. Paloma Beach is well known for its fish specialties (02) — the famous “pêche du jour” is a tantalizing dish. Other choice gastronomic delights include the local favorite local favorite, zucchini 06 flower fritters, the French classic Niçoise Salad and the behemoth basket of crudité with anchovy tapenade. The rest of the menu features other classic French dishes and well-loved South of France entrées.

04

05

If you’re interested in more than a romantic meal, Paloma Beach can organize cocktail parties, beach parties and even weddings. Able to accommodate up to 200 people, or simply the 12 guests on charter, private lunches and dinners are a specialty of Paloma Beach. If you’d like to arrive to Paloma Beach via car, the restaurant provides a car valet service nightly and, if your tender is unavailable, it also provides a free tender service for anyone who wishes to arrive by sea.

There is nothing quite like a global financial crisis to shake things up and make us re-evaluate what we are doing and, more importantly, how we are doing it. This is glaringly obviousintheyachtbuildingindustry, which, inthelastfew years, hasseenahostoffamousbrandsdisappearfromsight orre-emergehavingchangedhandsatarelativelylowprice. That said, however, the finest diamonds are formed under the greatest pressure and the same demands that have crippledsomebuildershavegivenbirthtonewbrandsthat mayotherwiseneverhaveseenthelightofday.Thepremier example is Wider Yachts, located on the charming and rustic east coast of Italy. Here, in a purpose-built shipyard under the noses of some of yachting’s biggest brands, a 150-foot is being built that promises to remodel expectations and aspirations of many yacht owners. Consider that the WIDER 150 is a motor yacht without anengineroom—somethingachievableonlybecausethe yacht has no engines. On the surface, it may appear that there is a major flaw in this concept, but before dwelling upon the benefits of an engine room, think for a moment about the drawbacks. Most engine rooms are located amidships in the widest and most voluminous area of the hull. They take up valuable space that could otherwise be usedforlargercabins, abiggertenderorboth.Inthecaseof theWIDER 150, not only are the guest cabins larger than on manyother 150-footyachts, but the reclaimedarea is used tohouseacustom-built32-foottender,whichoffersclassic looks, making it seem like it was designed for the movie “League of Gentlemen”. When the tender is launched, the transom’s rear and sides open up and the tender bay fills to create a splendid swimming pool/spa. The yacht has a high plumb bow, but the the bow’s height isfarmorethansimplyadesignfeaturetoaddtothevessel’s visual impact. A high bow creates high bulwarks, and the high bulwarks in turn hide a superstructure that extends remarkablyfarforward, allowingforapalatialowner’ssuite and bathroom on the main deck. All of this is done without spoiling the fluid lines of the vessel – yacht designer Fulvio di Simoni is renowned for this.

For most yacht owners, deck space is as important, if not more important, than interior volume, and it is clear that Wider understands this. Tilli Antonelli, the founder and president of Wider, has worked closely with di Simoni toextendthesundeckasfaraftasisaestheticallyacceptable tomaximizethisarea.Togethertheyhaveequippeditwith a well-proportioned Jacuzzi and a barbecue station. If this is not far enough from the steel band for your taste, a very generousseatingareaiscarvedintothesuperstructureand benefits from a custom-designed hydraulic sun awning.

Now to address the elephant in the room: the lack of engines. The WIDER 150 has a power generator room in the bow, where four variable-speed generators are mounted on silent blocks in a purpose-built suspension cage. The generators produce more than sufficient energy to power both the propulsion system and an entire hotel load. A thick cable leads to two banks of lithium polymer batteries and then on to the electric motors that run the pod propellers. The WIDER 150 is likely to be branded with words like “innovative” and “cutting edge,” but the truth is that this impressive technology is already in use on submarines, military craft and commercial liners, all of which have been running on diesel electric for many years. What is innovative, however, is thatWider has taken the necessary steps to apply this proven technology to a 150-foot motor yacht, afactmadepossiblebytheadvancementsinbattery technology.Lithiumpolymerbatteriesareactuallyasmall fraction of the weight of traditional gel batteries, but are many times more powerful. The batteries’ warranties remains for a fixed number of cycles, corresponding to about 10 years of normal use.

The WIDER 150 will accommodate up to 10 guests in five exceptional staterooms, including an on-deck master suite that opens on to a terrace and four additional Wider will launch the WIDER 150 summer 2015, and staterooms. 01 Quetzalcoatl De Bethune has incarnated the Quetzalcoatl, a deity of the Mesoamerican civilization, into its latest timepiece. Depicted by a snake with feathers, the Quetzalcoatl was a powerful symbol, particularly associated as the protector of artisans and goldsmiths; it also is credited with inventing the calendar. In keeping with the gold and artisan themes, the Quetzalcoatl watch has a solid gold dial engraved by Michelle Rothen. This timepiece not only is striking, but it also harkens back to the history of mankind and the mystery of the human experience. 02 Kambys Collection Watchmaker Cyrus has dubbed its new collection Kambys, after the son and successor of Cyrus the Great. With a seven-day power reserve, the timepiece’s twin barrel is wound manually. Manufactured completely in house, this movement was created by the legendary Swiss watchmaker Jean-François Mojon. Unlike most watches, the Kambys has a 55mm tonneau-shaped face. This watch is an attention grabber with three barrels sliding along a vertical axis as power is utilized across seven days. The tech-savvy second function has three beveled hands, which count 20 beats before passing a baton to the next hand. Additionally, the Kambys has a secret animation. Between 9 and 12 o’clock, if the wearer presses the crown at 9 o’clock, the words “limited edition” will appear. Press the button again and the Cyrus coin will appear. One last press and the Cyrus logo will appear; this function also can be personalized.

As they say, time and tide wait for no man. This selection of striking, elegant and artfully designed timepieces assure that you’re always timely. 01

OW N E R’ S S U I T E TODD BRAUN WORDS JANINE KETTERER

01 Braun’s first yacht, the 106-foot MAMA B

01

Former NASCAR team owner Todd Braun has been a boater his whole life. Braun grew up in northern Indiana, but spent his summers in Clearwater, Florida, where there was always a sailboat, Jet Ski or powerboat to play with — this is where he developed his love of life on the high seas. Braun is a true maverick yacht owner. The yachts he’s owned run the gamut from fully crewed, five-star service charter yachts to small, self-run-cruisers; he has been a charter guest, an owner-operator and everything in between.

Braun got his start in the yachting industry in 2006. NASCAR is an extremely busy sport, with an almost-year-long season that requires a lot of travel. “I’ve always been a water guy and I needed an escape,” says Braun. “A lot of racing guys, have boats and I became interested, so we went to a few boat shows and then I bought one.” Braun’s first yacht was a 106-foot Westship that he purchased with his mother called MAMA B. He then sold MAMA B and, in 2009, purchased OFF TRACK, a 92-foot Hargrave. In 2010, OFF TRACK was sold after a refit, which included new paint, soft goods and more, and Braun bought 99 PROBLEMS, a 112-foot Crescent.

After its purchase, Braun and his fiancée moved aboard. For a year, they cruised up and down the U.S. East Coast as liveaboard owners, stopping in little towns and big cities, including Nantucket, Charleston, Hilton Head and Sea Island, Georgia, where the couple married. “It was something I had always wanted to do,” says Braun. “I was in a good in-between place, as I had just sold my race team, and I thought: What better time to live aboard the yacht?” Braun sold 99 PROBLEMS in 2012 and purchased LEFTURN, a 75-foot Lazzara, the following year. In 2014, Braun bought WHISTLE, a 76-foot Lazzara, and sold LEFTURN shortly after.

36

N A V I G A T O R O W N E R ’ S S U I T E

“I go through stages,” says Braun. “I’m always onto the next adventure and I love the deal. I can’t say that I’ve liked one type of yacht that I’ve owned more than another. I enjoyed the five-star service on the bigger yachts, but I also enjoy what I’m doing now… but I’m thinking of going bigger again. I want to go farther south.” For Braun, yachting is all about the journey, “I like to go out and explore,” he says. Braun has chartered yachts in the Med and the Caribbean, but on his own yachts, he’s spent most of his time in the U.S. and The Bahamas. “I love Staniel Cay,” he says. “I’ve always loved it. It has a lot of charm. We always do the usual Bahamas circle and we love Key West. I also spend time with friends in Hilton Head.”

When on board, Braun enjoys spending time with his family and friends and go diving. “I really love diving, exploring and seeing what’s out there. I have dived all around the world and I have to say I think some of the best diving I’ve ever experienced is The Bahamas. I once saw a sea turtle that literally was bigger than my body.” Braun also enjoys running the show on board. “I really like planning the trips and driving the boat,” he says. “I took my 75-foot to Hilton Head by myself. My wife and I have a lot of fun when we’re on board just the two of us.” But more than diving and driving, Braun enjoys his yachts because they are a way to bring family and friends together. “I’ve had so much fun on my yachts,” he says. “They’ve allowed me to be with my friends and family, get away from it all and have fun. Without that, yachting wouldn’t be enjoyable for me — if I wasn’t able to enjoy it with them. And if you don’t enjoy it, why have it?”

02

Yachting has become a favorite pastime for Braun, who not only enjoys being out on the water with his friends and family, but also the hunt for the deal. “I love buying and selling boats,” says Braun. One extremely important facet to owning yachts to Braun is the broker. Braun has been in yachting for nine years and has bought and sold at least six yachts. Through it all, he has worked with the same broker, Northrop & Johnson’s Wes Sanford. Braun feels that a relationship with a reliable broker “is everything. You need someone who will be there.” As Braun’s tastes, wants and desires run the gamut of yachts, Sanford has been there as a friend and an advisor. “I trust him. I feel confident in that. He’s not just in it for a one-and-done deal. He creates relationships and will fight for his clients.”

Braun is now contemplating his next step and his seventh yacht sale and purchase. He’s considering a 130-foot yacht to explore the Caribbean. “My tastes and wants will always fluctuate,” he says. But no matter the size of the yacht he owns, Braun says one thing is for sure, “Everywhere we go on the yacht, we have a good time.”

03

02 The 75-foot Lazzara LEFTURN was Braun’s fourth yacht. 03 Braun and his wife spent a year living aboard the beautiful 112-foot Crescent 99 PROBLEMS. 04 The interior of MAMA B was comfortable and chic with five-star amenities. 05 Staniel Cay is Braun’s favorite spot to visit while on board his yachts.

As sunny spring and summer rays heat the day, warm breezes envelope the sundeck and the salty ocean spray sifts over the bow, what will you have in your glass? We went searching for the top wines to refresh you on a crystal-clear day at sea. Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne – Savor a classic Most Champagne houses build their wines from a blend of pinot noir for structure and chardonnay for elegance, but Ruinart is one of the only producers to craft its flagship bottles entirely from chardonnay, the golden thread and soul of its wines. Chardonnay tends to be austere in the Champagne region, but this Blanc de Blancs offers a more supple expression of the grape, complemented generously with citron, white pineapple, white peach and an underpinning of floral notes reminiscent of jasmine and pink peppercorns. It is vibrant and elegant, fresh on the nose and crisp and lively on the palate — perfect for a late afternoon sipper and aperitif to your evening meal. Château d’Esclans rosés – Discover more You may be most familiar with producer Château d’Esclans through their entry-level rosé, Whispering Angel, a delightfully fruity, slightly sweet everyday quaffer. But if you want to experience a fine potential of Provençal pink, the wines that rise behind the Angel truly are remarkable. Starting with the Château d’Esclans estate label and moving through Les Clans, Garrus and Déesse Astrée, a Côtes de Provence production, the collection becomes lighter in color and more ethereal, showing peekaboo, savory

Sigalas Assyrtiko – The new cutting edge Greek wine is making a head-turning comeback and reclaiming its space on the international market. In the early 21st century, a set of pioneering Greek winemakers traveled around the globe, learning from masters in Burgundy, Bordeaux and the United States. They then returned home to update local wineries and reinvent the image of Greek wine. Their discoveries led to blending new techniques with 6,500-year-old traditions, giving us a delicious, renewed version of an old favorite.

Organic and biodynamic since 2009, Flowers employs minimal intervention in the winemaking process, allowing the wines to naturally express their unique terroirs. The estate is nestled high in the Sonoma Coast; vineyards are perched at 1,150 to 1,875 feet above sea level. There, winters are warm and summers are cooler, creating a long, rich growing season. ABOUT TIME ARNOLD & SON

WORDS JANINE KETTERER

Northrop & Johnson’s strategic global partner Arnold & Son has a long tradition in watchmaking. With an ethos of bespoke craftsmanship and an emphasis on maintaining that tradition while keeping in step with modern technology and style, Arnold & Son is an impressive company to watch. Steeped in tradition, Arnold & Son has been on the watchmaking scene since 1764, when John Arnold of Cornwall, England, presented a ring containing a half-quarter minute repeater to King George III of England in front of his court. From that day forward, Arnold & Son began crafting impeccable timepieces for their wealthy clientele. Only a few short years later, Arnold created the first marine chronometer capable of determining longitude through celestial navigation. This invention solidified Arnold & Son’s maritime heritage, which still prevails today.

The ingenuity, unique and innovative techniques, handcrafted finishes and the dedication to clients that John Arnold displayed in 1764 are still present within the walls of the Arnold & Son manufacturer in Switzerland. Located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Arnold & Son sits in the heart of the Swiss watchmaking industry and prides itself on its impeccable and experienced craftsmen. These engineers and watchmakers are among the best in the world; they are precise and offer the highest-caliber production. Arnold & Son begins every project with a blank slate. Because it develops and produces its own movements in house, Arnold & Son has earned the right to call itself a manufacturer and belongs to an extremely select collection of watchmakers in Switzerland who also boast this skillset.

Arnold & Son is proud to produce and launch at least two movements every year, only adding to its impressive list of accomplishments and solidifying itself as one of the most dynamic watch manufacturers in the world. The technical design of the movement pieces is evidence of Arnold & Son’s perfect blend of skilled micromechanics and traditional watchmaking practices. The company has embraced the old and the new, but although modern technology enhances the creation process, traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation will never be replaced by machines.

Further enhancing Arnold & Son’s movements are the impressive range of sophisticated complications also included in the collections. Arnold & Son designers are involved early in the watch production process. Not only are they visionary, they also are researchers, looking back into the history of watch manufacturing, to beautifully meld legacy with technical prowess. Arnold & Son has risen to a degree in which it not only creates its own components, but also the tools themselves.

But as Fabien Dutriaux, vice president of sales, assures, “We are professional and we take the time to do what’s necessary. This only increases the value of the brand. We don’t cheat on anything when it comes to making Arnold & Son timepieces.”

Every single mechanism in an Arnold & Son timepiece receives treatments, not just what you see on the surface. These treatments play with the light and entice the eye. In 2015, Arnold & Son partnered with yacht brokerage Northrop & Johnson. This partnership was a natural fit considering Arnold & Son’s maritime heritage. Arnold & Son’s timepieces and the yachts sold and chartered by Northrop & Johnson have much more in common than simply being luxurious. From the engineering prowess required to make both work properly, to the intricate styling details, yachts and timepieces aren’t dissimilar. Much like the engine that powers a superyacht, the mechanics that are utilized to assure the movements of an Arnold & Son watch are working in precise order, also require an incredible amount of engineering knowledge and manpower to put them together properly.

Arnold & Son offers ingenuity, a dedication to preeminence and a time-honored heritage, ideals that perfectly align with those held by Northrop & Johnson. Our strategic partnership is founded on these principles and a continued promise to offer our clients the very best.

CLASSICS CARS

Anyone who remembers how the classic car boom of the late 1980s ended in a dramatic bust might justifiably be inclined to steer clear of sinking their savings into a collection of old cars. However, a look at some of the prices commanded for models today that could have been bought for considerably less money just 10 or 20 years ago, shows that the market currently is at an all-time high. A prime example of the buoyancy of the collector car hobby was seen at a recent sale of around 60 classics held in Paris by French auction house Artcurial. Known as the “Baillon Collection,” the cars had been abandoned for decades among outbuildings of the grounds of a historic château. Most had suffered the ravages of rust and rodents, but that didn’t prevent them from fetching a total of €25 million — the top lot being a 1961 Ferrari 250GT short wheelbase California Spider (pictured bottom right), that alone, despite needing restoration, commanded €16.2 million.

There is little doubt that the dramatic upturn in values throughout the last decade can be attributed to the fact that people are looking for a home for their money that is both safer and more interesting than leaving it in the bank. But the financial aspect isn’t the only factor at work — in recent years, the number of events held for veteran, vintage and classic automobiles has grown exponentially. Instead of just polishing your pride and joy and taking it for an occasional weekend jaunt, collectors actually can use their cars for anything from an organized tour with a group of like-minded enthusiasts to an all-out, seat-of-the-pants circuit race. One of the most appealing facets of old cars, however, is that you can have as much fun with one that costs $15,000 as one that retails for $15 million, or any range between. To prove the point, we’ve selected six classics across a (very) wide range of values.

THE FACT IS THAT PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR A HOME FOR THEIR MONEY THAT IS BOTH SAFER & MORE INTERESTING THAN LEAVING IT IN THE BANK

01 Jaguar E-Type Created by former aircraft designer Malcolm Sayer, Jaguar’s E-Type was the fastest production car on the market when it was first unveiled in March 1961. With a top speed of 150 mph, a 3.8-liter, 265-horsepower engine and jaw-dropping good looks, it was declared by none other than Enzo Ferrari to be “the most beautiful car in the world.” And, at the time, priced at little more than £2,000, it was less than half the price of a comparable Ferrari or Aston Martin. More than 72,000 were built during the 14-year production run — the majority were sold in the U.S. The most popular, however, are the “Series 1” models, made until 1968, with the best open-top “roadsters” currently commanding around $250,000; the fixed-head coupes go for half as much. 02 Ferrari 250 GTO Said by many to be the most coveted car ever created, a mere 39 examples of the legendary 250 GT “Omologato” were produced between 1962 and 1963. Originally built to contest the FIA GT World Championship series in the three-liter class, the “250” in the title refers to the 250cc capacity of each of the engine’s 12 cylinders. Although designed as a pure racing machine, the GTO is renowned for its ease of use as a road car and its suitability for covering great distances at speed. Few members of the car’s legion of admirers are likely to get the chance to own one, however. They now change hands for up to $50 million.

03 MGB Launched in 1962, the MGB became the world’s most popular sports car; 514,834 examples were built during an 18-year production run. Huge numbers of the MGB were exported to the U.S. where they remain well-loved and very affordable classics. Powered by a dependable, if not exactly electrifying, 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine, the “B” can be found as a wind-in-the-hair roadster or in more practical coupe format as the “GT.” In either case, you get classic 1960s looks, a great owner’s network and the extensive availability of spares (everything from carpets to entire bodyshells are available as new). And, with prices for a decent example starting at just $5,000, they remain a remarkable value for money. 04 Porsche 911 Carrera RS The Carrera 2.7 RS of 1973 was intended purely for racing, but Porsche had to build 500 roadgoing examples to qualify the car for inclusion in the Group 4 GT category. But it proved so popular as a high-performance street machine that production stopped after an additional 1,008 had rolled off the line. Much of the appeal of the RS lies in the fact that it combines 150-mph performance with reliability and surprising economy, making it an all-around practical vehicle. The model was mainly sold in “touring” trim, although 200 “lightweight” versions also were built, featuring bare bones interiors and other special components. The best now fetch more than $1 million.

05 Shelby Mustang GT350H An American icon, the Mustang has been in continuous production in myriad versions since 1964, but the most valuable examples are the tuned models produced during the late 1960s by legendary racer Carrol Shelby. The GT350 typically featured a 289-cubic-inch “Hi-Po” V8 engine, a four-barrel Holley carburetor and the choice of manual or automatic transmission. The most celebrated of these is the “H” model, which was built for Hertz. Legend has it that they were frequently rented on Fridays, raced throughout the weekend and returned to the Hertz fleet on Monday morning — leading to the term “rent-a-racer.” A top model Shelby Mustang GT350H, with all its original extras, now costs around $150,000.

06 Lamborghini Miura Made famous in the opening scene of the movie “The Italian Job,” the Miura was the first mid-engine, road-going supercar when it was launched in 1966. According to legend, Lamborghini engineers designed it in their spare time, as company boss Ferruccio Lamborghini was more interested in grand tourers. Featuring a 12-cylinder, four-liter engine crammed in behind the two-seater cockpit, Miuras are known for their brutal power, weighty gearshift and over-light front end. But, on a twisting mountain road with a good driver behind the wheel, thrills are guaranteed. Add to that a range of wild color options and a list of past owners ranging from Frank Sinatra to the Shah of Iran and you can see why values have risen from $800,000 five years ago to more than $2 million today.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

NAVIGATOR TAKES A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE OF YACHTING WITH THE L ATEST NEW BUILDS AND DESIGNS WORDS NANCY MATTHEWS

N A V I G A T O R D E S I G N T R E N D S

There was a time not long ago when 100 feet was notably large for a yacht. Oh, how things change. Today, it seems it’s the 100-meter mark that must be surpassed before eyebrows are raised in anticipation. The trend toward ever-larger yachts is indisputable, but this doesn’t mean that innovation is only taking place on the far side of 300 feet. Forward-thinking hull designs, glass technology and eco-friendly solutions are being explored in all sizes. And builders are experimenting in other ways — yards renown for building semi-custom are going custom, and custom builders who would never before dare whisper the word “production” are offering owners semicustom platforms. It’s an exciting era for exterior styling as well; a time when brash, futuristic designs coexist peacefully next to more organic shapes, and even so-called “timeless” style is applauded when executed with a nod to future proofing. Meanwhile, “openness” has never had more of a moment – think balconies as the de rigueur,

6 5

floor-to-ceiling windows, expanding decks, indoor-outdoor dining rooms, glass-bottom swimming pools and beach clubs that go above and beyond the norm. Most thrilling, perhaps, is that bold experimentation isn’t just being seen in the far-out, never-to-be-built; designers are dreaming up cutting-edge yachts, and owners and builders are making them a reality. If you want to take a peek into the future at the projects, concepts and new builds that will shape the superyacht landscape, look no further. Going large Does size matter? Glancing at the order books of some top builders, you would think it very well might. European yards, for instance, are taking orders for and delivering their largest yachts ever. In early 2015, Feadship launched its new flagship, the 333-foot hull number 808. She marks the first time the

Dutch builder exceeded the 100-meter mark. Less than a week prior, Feadship launched another sizable superyacht, 274-foot SAVANNAH. Hull 808 is designed by the famed Tim Heywood; in keeping to her big-boat pedigree, she has been built to Passenger Yacht Code (PYC), which is another first for Feadship. The PYC aims to strike a happy medium between SOLAS and LY3, allowing yachts to accommodate more guests than the standard Large Yacht Code – in the case of 808, 16 to 20 guests – while forgoing some of the pesky regulation found when building to SOLAS. However, PYC comes with its own level of regulations that have caused some to ponder whether it’s worth all the effort to gain a few more guest accommodations.

semi-production builder will deliver nine yachts larger than 164 feet from its custom range in 2015 is gamechanging in itself.

If 808 is a guidepost, her accommodations certainly make a compelling argument for PYC. The owner will luxuriate in an entire deck dedicated to his use, with a full-beam stateroom, his-and-hers bathrooms, a sauna, office and study, and a private forward deck with Jacuzzi. The owner’s aft deck has alfresco dining for 20. Making full use of the outside spaces, hull 808 boasts an outdoor cinema and a 20-foot contraflow, glass-bottom swimming pool – and don’t forget the waterfall feature. The observation lounge also does a nice job of letting guests enjoy the vistas while basking in climate-controlled comfort. The beach club is in a world of its own with a lounge, wellness center and ultra high-definition movie theater. Benetti also is building its largest-ever custom yachts. The Italian builder reported two new orders for yachts around the 100-meter mark last fall, and the next big Benetti to launch in 2015 will be a 295-foot behemoth. Not enough specifics have been confirmed on these builds to make a strong case that a particular Benetti yacht will change the face of yachting, but the mere fact that the predominantly

As the builders of the largest yacht in the world – that’s the 590-foot AZZAM, of course – Lürssen Yachts is certainly not afraid of going big. But larger doesn’t only correlate to LOA. The German yacht builder’s latest new order is pushing boundaries in terms of her volume, which is reported to be larger than any other 242-foot yacht floating today. Dubbed “Project Thor,” the full-displacement steel yacht is currently in build. Designed by the legendary Andrew Winch, inside and out, she will have a spacious 43-foot-plus beam, affording her an especially ample volume that stands out even from a yard known for delivering the largest of yachts. Delta has debuted a new 67-meter concept and, while not it’s largest ever, it’s certainly up there – and it’s packed with big-boat amenities. The 67-meter is designed specifically, in fact, to offer the maximum number of features in an attractive package. Touch-and-go helipad, check. Fullbeam gym and fitness space, check. Twin 8.5-meter tenders, double check. The wow factor however, is the 15-foot-long, nine-foot-wide swimming pool found at the stern, which boasts an underwater window that allows light to filter into the beach club below. The U.S. builder describes its new 67-meter as being designed with bountiful storage and the ability to provision for long periods. There are accommodations for 14 guests and 20 crew. The upper deck owner’s suite offers inspiring views and rambles over nearly 1,200 square feet, including a private forward deck lounge. Designed to suit a variety of tastes, Delta designer Christian Oliver notes that the

67-meter is presented in two styling options, classic or modern, either of which can then be customized to an owner’s brief. Crossing over Refusing to be pegged as one-trick ponies, the latest trend spotted is builders strategically crossing over into new markets. Prior to last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, Blohm+Voss – builder of some of the most iconic, custom creations in the world, including the uniquely formed A, designed by Philippe Starck, and the ahead-of-its-time ECO by Martin Francis – announced that it would be embarking on something new. Rather than introducing a custom project, the German builder revealed that it will enter the semi-custom market. Shorter delivery time was the motivating factor behind the new 262-foot, semi-custom yacht, the BV80, says Patrick Coote, sales and marketing director of Blohm+Voss, who notes that thorough market research informed the decision. “One of key things from our research is build time, people want boats fast these days,” Coote says. Blohm+Voss tapped Eidsgaard Design for its new BV80 project, with a brief that the yacht carry forward the Blohm+Voss DNA, while having a widely appealing

exterior design, flexible interior and that little something extra, such as fire pits, full-height windows, indoor gardens and outdoor cinemas. BV80 has large, square windows reminiscent of Blohm+Voss’s 1990 launch, 344-foot LADY MOURA. A racing stripe running from foredeck to aft is a standout exterior detail, and living areas are split equally between interior and exterior spaces. “In respect to the exterior, we were keen to pick up on heritage from Blohm+Voss’s iconic yachts, we wanted to tip our hats to that heritage,” says Ben Harrison of Eidsgaard Design. “With the square windows to the guest cabins on the BV80, we’ve acknowledged just a hint of this heritage. We also worked with the yard to give the boat a fantastic bow flare, a very fine entry into water. It makes for a very pretty, pretty hull. The BV80 is highly customizable within this package; interior layouts and amenities can shape shift widely. What we were trying to achieve was to be cost effective and produce a platform onto which we can provide the opportunity for clients to modify to their own tastes,” Harrison says. “Blohm+Voss wanted to bring more than the chance just to change the fabrics.” On the other side of the coin, a yacht builder renown for its semi-custom platform hull dependability recently announced its new bespoke offerings. Amels, which offers its Limited Editions series designed by Tim Heywood in sizes ranging from 180 to 272 feet has broken its molds by going custom. This also is a commitment to building larger yachts for the Dutch builder as its one-off custom yachts will start where its Limited Editions range leaves off, at 272 feet, moving upward to 360 feet. Amels is responding to

market feedback as well, but unlike Blohm+Voss, its owners are, “coming back to us and asking for larger yachts and, in particular, full-custom yachts,” says Amels Managing Director Rob Luijendijk. “The difference with our Amels Full Custom offer is that in the 80- to-110-meter segment, we’re really talking about a quite small market for very high-value, one-off creations. Our clients can decide for themselves what better suits them.” Crossing over into new territories is proving successful for some yards and designers already. Dubois Naval Architects, whose founder Ed Dubois is regarded highly for his sailing yacht designs, is riding a wave of success for its foray into motor yachts. The 151-foot Dubois-designed Feadship motor yacht COMO was launched in 2014 with much acclaim. The follow-up from builder and designer came just a year later in the similarly sized KISS. Feadship is careful to point out that these yachts, while sharing a similar length and design team, are not sisterships. For starters, COMO has a top speed of 19 knots and KISS has an upper deck devoted to the owner. But what Feadship does affirm is that it took lessons learned in COMO and previous builds to enhance its custom build experience. “With yachts like COMO and KISS, we are effectively building a sporty type boat around our average size of more than 15 years ago, but now with all the know-how and intelligence that Feadship has developed,” says Feadship Director Henk De Vries. “This facilitates a clever approach to high-end production, one which remains entirely custom while keeping the costs of a Feadship of this size within the bounds of reason.”

Eco and hull overhauls Eco-friendly yachts are a hot-button topic that doesn’t come with an easy answer. Motor yachts, after all, burn fuel. But yards are looking at how they can make their new builds greener prospects with hybrid power options and solar panels, among other environmentally kind solutions. At the same time, unconventional hull shapes are having their day in the sun. The SWATH superyacht is a reality, as are other multihull proposals. And spates of low-resistance hull forms are leaving the standard displacement and semi-displacement shapes in their wake. Perhaps not surprisingly, there is overlap here. New concepts extolling the virtues of eco-friendliness also have innovative hulls, thus recognizing that power packages aren’t the only answer – hull shapes that allow less resistance and burn less fuel are agreeable to both the environment and the yacht owner’s pocketbook. Case in point, Oceanco’s 383-foot concept Titan, code name DP055. Her slender hull is specially designed for low-resistance, and this is complemented by hybrid power. Titan is predicted to reach a top speed of 18 knots, yet cruising in an eco-aware mode, silent operation, low emissions and fuel efficiency are guaranteed. Meanwhile, Blue Coast Yachts has introduced a 197-foot hybrid power trimaran concept, propelled by MTU diesel engines and electric drives. With naval architecture and interiors by Coste Design, the carbon and fiberglass multihull can top out at 30 knots and also take on transatlantic voyages at more economical speeds of 11 knots. Bonus: She can run six hours on only electric power. But move over displacement, semi-displacement and displaning. The next big thing in yachting might be something else entirely. SWATH vessels have been creeping into the superyacht lexicon, staking their claim that superior hull stability also can be comfortable and luxurious. Andrea Vallicelli Design proposed an interesting concept for Fincantieri Yachts, a 246-footer based on a SWATH hull form. Fuel-cell technology could give this concept zeroemission propulsion, giving her major eco-credibility. With fuel cells, the yacht could move silently with a range of 450 nautical miles. So what is the future of yachting from the vantage point of the present? The key word is growth — growth in yacht size, growth in builder’s range of offerings and growth in ecointelligent design. And from our vantage point, it’s all on the up — the future looks very bright indeed.

Expect the exceptional Our philosophy is simple; to build iconic yachts that surpass every expectation. This uncompromising obsession with quality provides an onboard experience that very few will ever get to appreciate. The results, we are told, are the most prestigious and coveted yachts in the world. Beautifully Engineered

Croatia is becoming increasingly popular as a cruising destination as more and more people discover its unique qualities. Off the beaten track yet surprisingly cosmopolitan, Croatia is now the go-to destination for discerning clients who want to escape the summer crowds. The sunny blue skies, pristine waters, lush green vegetation and red-tiled rooftops are a delight for the senses. The Republic of Croatia is a sovereign state at the crossroads of Central Europe, southeast Europe, and the Mediterranean. Its geographical situation makes it a bridge between east and west, a strategic position that, over the centuries, has led to colonization by many different cultures. From the Greeks and Romans to the Venetians, Ottomans and Austrians, the variety of influences have created a fascinating country with a distinct character. Croatia lies on the Adriatic Sea; it boasts an extensive coastline and 1,185 islands. The scenery is dramatic — dense forests of cypress and pine plunge down steep hillsides to the rocky shoreline. The waters are crystal clear and beautifully colored, ranging from emerald green to stunning turquoise; there are both sand and shingle beaches to visit. Quiet anchorages in calm and secluded bays abound, while vineyards, olive groves, waterfalls, numerous national parks and remarkably well-preserved ancient towns wait to be explored ashore. Stroll @ Dubrovnik, Croatia This historic walled city of Dubrovnik was at one time an independent principality; now it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beautiful and fascinating, it is surrounded by ramparts that were first built in the 16th century. Within Dubrovnik’s walls are dozens of churches, palaces, monasteries and other places of historical interest,

but Dubrovnik is not a museum; it has a population of 5,000 people and is a bustling, thriving community. Cars are forbidden in Dubrovnik, but it’s easy to explore on foot. The old town is a labyrinth of streets and long, narrow alleys lined with bars, shops and galleries. The more active set will enjoy climbing the steep stairs that lead to the ramparts where you will find amazing views of the city and the surrounding area. Explore Dubrovnik with a private guide, who will explain its fascinating history and share some amusing anecdotes. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon or early evening when the cruise ship passengers have departed. Dine @ D’Vino, Dubrovnik, Croatia Dining out in Dubrovnik is a delightful experience thanks to beautifully situated restaurants and bistros. The fish is locally caught and much of the produce comes from the farms, groves and vineyards surrounding the city. The different cultural influences are evident, but the cuisine is generally Mediterranean in style. D’Vino is one of those impressive local haunts, set back from the main street in a tiny alley, where you can sample excellent local wines. Spend the day @ Lokrum, Croatia Dubronik doesn’t offer much in the way of beaches but the small island of Lokrum, just a short tender ride away, is good for swimming and even has a beach reserved for nudists if you don’t want tan lines. It’s worth a stroll around the Botanical Gardens and climbing to Fort Royal, a souvenir of Napoleon’s occupation of Dubrovnik. Here, find beautiful views of the city. Don’t be surprised by the flocks of peacocks, which were imported from the Canary Islands by Austrian Archduke Maximilian in 1859.

Drop anchor @ Mljet, Croatia Lying southwest of Dubrovnik — only a short cruise away – the island of Mljet is considered to be the greenest and most densely wooded island in the Adriatic. Anchor in the pristine bay of Polace on the western end of the island. A short tender ride will bring you to the extensive Mljet National Park, which is well worth a visit. There are two deep bays, which are referred to as lakes because of their very narrow outlets to the sea. In an idyllic setting in the middle of the larger lake is a former 13th century Benedictine monastery, which is now a café. Take the ferry in the morning for breakfast with an incredible view. The best way to explore the National Park is on foot, but cars are available for hire, if needed. Mljet is an ideal place to anchor overnight as the waters are deep and calm, perfect for watersports, and it’s a beautiful spot to wake up to in the morning.

Montenegro, Europe’s youngest state, became an independent republic in 2006. Due to its strategic position close to the entrance to the Adriatic, this tiny Balkan country has endured a checkered and often turbulent past, but is now a peaceful, settled country that is fast becoming a yachting hot spot. Situated just southeast of Croatia and sharing the same temperate climate, Montenegro is blessed with stunning natural beauty and pristine waters. Still a relatively undiscovered gem, its coastline has countless uninhabited islands, secret coves and charming harbors, as well as unique historical sites that stand as reminders of the country’s rich past. An ideal place to begin a luxury charter, Montenegro currently is not part of the EU and charters starting here are exempt from taxes on charter fees, as well as on fuel and other provisions, which offers a significant financial advantage. From Montenegro, you can cruise northwest to Croatia (and beyond, to Italy) or south to the Ionian islands of Greece.

from the open sea and, in addition to being absolutely beautiful, has a fascinating history. Situated at the end of the bay, the town of Kotor was an important artistic and commercial center in the Middle Ages, with its own famous schools of masonry and iconography. Over the years, the monuments and city walls were seriously damaged by earthquakes, the last of which struck in 1979, but an intensive restoration and reconstruction program has now been completed. It is worth hiring a guide for a private tour of the town.

Stay @ Porto Montenegro The new development at Porto Montenegro offers a stateof-the-art marina, as well as world-class hotel and leisure facilities with three international airports easily in reach.

Dine @ Stari Mlini For an unforgettable lunch or dinner, Stari Mlini restaurant, near Kotor, is housed in a 16th century flour mill, set close to the water and hidden in dense vegetation. There is a private dock so you can arrive by tender. Specialties include delicious trout raised at the restaurant’s own farm, and other local produce. The ambiance is secluded and romantic — dine under grape trellises to the sound of the water wheel gently turning in the background.

Explore @ Bay of Kotor If you are joining your yacht in Porto Montenegro, it is worth spending a day or two exploring the Bay of Kotor (also known as Boka Bay), which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This deep, natural harbor is well protected

Go ashore @ St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks High above the bay, soaring mountains plunge down to the water, their slopes lush with Mediterranean vegetation. HOW TO BUY ART... ART CURATOR JULIE KEYES SHARES HER INSIGHTS ON THE ART OF THE CULTURAL PURCHASE

Humans are unique animals because we choose our own plumage. In today’s society, a great deal of that plumage is featured on the walls of homes, offices, yachts and so on as impressive works of art. What we display on our walls offers great insight into who we are as people. The art you choose identifies you, as does your clothing, your music and the colors you gravitate toward to decorate your home. When you see classic art masters’ artwork adorning walls, you can deduce that the person is drawn to classic beauty, but those who collect works from modern artist, such as Andy Warhol or other pop artists, may be more trendy or edgy. There is a great deal more to choosing art than simply just liking what you see. What to buy and where to buy it are just a few questions that crop up when looking for your next favorite work of art. When buying art, the goal is twofold. The first goal is to choose a piece of art that will increase in value over the years; the second is to choose a piece of art that you will not tire of.

There are various other important considerations when choosing a new piece of art. One of these considerations: Where will the art be placed? Will it go with the room’s motif? If you rearrange, repaint or change décor, will you have to move your new artwork? Do you have other spaces that the piece will work in? Consider color palates, themes and where your new artwork will work best for you. Accurately map out the space, keeping in mind ceiling heights, the furniture in the space and other art pieces already there. These all should be deliberated before bringing home a new piece of art.

Once you have chosen a piece that you love, slow down the sales process. Here are two secrets from an art dealer: Often, if you ask, the artist, gallery owner or interior designer will be able to offer you a discount of around 10 percent. Don’t be shy; this is a well-known opportunity in the art world. Also, the gallery, artist or consultant often will ship the piece to your home, office, etc. prior to purchase so you can see what the piece will look like before you sign on the dotted line. This works to your advantage as you truly will be able to gauge how the piece will work in the space you envisioned it.

Another important facet to purchasing new artwork is whom are you purchasing it from. You must have a trusting relationship with your art dealer, the artist, the gallery owner, the interior designer or whoever is selling you the artwork. The world of art is about beauty and the artist, the gallerist and the consultant are courageous people who chose to work in the field of beauty. They are the supposed experts in their field. If you trust them, it is prudent to listen to what they have to say. At the same time, always keep your vision in your mind, as you are the expert of your own tastes, but their knowledge can be of great value when choosing an investment piece of art to add to your collection.

Purchasing art is an investment in your own taste and style. It’s an opportunity to build your own version of who you are and to define what you love. Take the opportunity seriously and evaluate your preferences and enjoy the process. You aren’t simply picking up a photo from your local department store, you’re choosing an item that will define a part of who you are and help create an impressive space wherever you choose to place it.

CHARISMA 153’ (46.6m) : : Feadship : : 1985/2008 :: From $168,000 per week

A true classic, M/Y CHARISMA is a 46.6-meter Feadship built in 1985. Acquired by a new owner in 2002, she was completely rebuilt from stem to stern, top to bottom, recreating a masterpiece for charter guests to enjoy. With six sophisticated staterooms on board, she has space for up to 12 guests, attended by a crew of 12. During the refit, there was not one piece of CHARISMA that was not rebuilt, replaced or refurbished. She was transformed from an older-style, 149-foot cockpit yacht to an elegant 153-foot full-deck motor yacht. All of the work done on CHARISMA was completed in cooperation with Feadship to ensure the company’s integrity stood firm throughout the restoration.
