TIME & TIDE WAIT FOR NO MAN

Gaudeamus Igitur! I recently celebrated my 61st birthday. I’ve made 61 trips around the sun with the world revolving 365 times per trip, creating days and nights that I’ve grouped into weeks and months and split into hours and minutes to allocate, categorize and monetize my journey through life. It’s a funny thing, time. As a child, time feels like it’s holding you back, then it slowly starts to feel like it’s slipping away. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may. One of the advantages of making so many trips around the sun is that it gives one perspective. And, while I may occasionally look in the mirror and lament the visible mileage, I am grateful for the clarity of understanding that time is precious. I no longer pass my time; I am at a point in life where I aspire to spend my time wisely and have little tolerance for my time being wasted.

YOLO. As I consider where I choose to spend my time, I look back into my memories of time well spent, and the answers are clear: my family, my friends, my health and the well-being of my company, its employees and its clients. I see my son off at college and realize that our father-son relationship has crossed over into that beautiful phase in life where he is as much a friend as he is my child. I choose to make the most of every minute my wife and I can share with him. No more putting off the adventures we have dreamed of. I value the time I spend with friends and vow to set aside time for my health. What will make all this possible is making Northrop & Johnson the very best company it can be. Thanks to my incredible employees and my remarkable clients (many of whom I consider friends), the time spent here is both meaningful and satisfying.

Carpe Diem. Patience is overrated. We are examining every area in our business that causes our clients to wait, and we are working to eliminate or minimize it. Your thoughts on this priority are always welcome. I want you to join me in seizing the day. Grab your family and friends; take that trip you’ve been putting off. GO and GO now. Dare I say it? Charter or buy that boat. If that is your dream, go for it. Time waits for no one, and aren’t we past the stage where waiting makes sense?

01 Northrop & Johnson Insurance Services Northrop & Johnson launched its newest service, N&J Private Insurance Services, in late 2018. Providing another dimension of service for Northrop & Johnson clients, N&J Private Insurance Services is available to clients worldwide with 24/7 coverage and access to claim support and client advocacy. Through N&J Private Insurance Services, clients receive specialized yacht insurance, which includes hull and machinery, P&I, navigation, crew medical, pollution, kidnap and ransom, new build, a ship repairer’s liability program, charter cancellation, charterer’s liability and more. At the helm of N&J Private Insurance Services is Managing Director and Board Member John Gaffney and Senior Vice President of Underwriting Laura Sherrod — two of the most qualified and respected names in the yacht insurance world. John has extensive yachting industry experience and his comprehensive marine, engineering and sales background working in the U.S., Europe and the Middle and Far East greatly aid him in his ability to provide clients with industry-leading service. Prior to joining N&J Private Insurance Services, John was acting Senior Vice President/Yacht Practice for Marsh from 2014 to 2018. Laura has been working in the yacht insurance industry since 1987 with her first job at C.A. Hansen. Hansen was the first yacht insurance specialty agency in the United States and it was there that Laura learned the Lloyd’s insurance market from the best names in the business. In 1995, Hansen became Brown & Brown Marine; there Laura managed and built the marine team for 13 years. In 2008, Laura was asked to head the wholesale division of Atlass Insurance where she worked to build yacht programs valued up to $200 million in the U.S. and abroad.

SCOPE

N&J Private Insurance Services offers clients some of the most competitive pricing on the market with access to all major worldwide carriers, both domestic and international, via Lloyd’s of London. In addition to all of the standard insurance programs required for yacht ownership, the group has added some extra customized programs offered only by N&J Private Insurance Services. Two of these products are Trip Cancellation Coverage and Worldwide Crew Medical Programs. The Trip Cancellation Coverage protects the charterer from a loss due to cancellation of that charter, and the Worldwide Crew Medical program allows Northrop & Johnson yachts to offer their crewmembers a unique benefit usually not afforded to crew: comprehensive health insurance, which is a perk to any crew compensation arrangement and is likely to entice top-quality crewmembers and help build crew retention. 02 SeaKeepers Society NextGen SK Finalist Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker Philip Bell was named a SeaKeepers Society NextGen SK Finalist. Philip was recognized for his contributions to environmental and marine conservation at the SeaKeepers Society’s Annual Founders’ Dinner, which celebrated the society’s 20th year during the 2018 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Philip’s passion for the environment sent him to Ghana for six months where he helped build infrastructure in the desert and worked on eco-tourism projects in the rainforest. Philip also is a supporter of marine conservation and research. The anniversary dinner was held at a beautiful Fort Lauderdale residence and welcomed supporters, industry professionals and sponsors for an evening of appreciation. The Society promotes marine research, conservation and educational outreach with the direct involvement of the yachting community.

03 Northrop & Johnson Wins Big in Antigua Crew from Northrop & Johnson’s award-winning charter fleet won big once again during the 2018 Antigua Charter Yacht Show on December 4th through 9th. The 19th Annual Chefs Culinary Contest tasked chefs with creating the perfect “New Year’s Eve Dinner Party,” while the interior crew were commissioned with crafting an ideal “New Year’s Eve Decorative Table Setting.” This year’s contest added a unique twist for chefs; each was given a list of guests’ dietary requirements to up the level of difficulty just a touch. Chefs prepared three courses — a starter, a main and a dessert — and were given only 30 minutes to tantalize the judges’ taste buds. Yachts were divided into three size categories (160 feet and larger, 159 to 126 feet and 125 feet and smaller). Two of Northrop & Johnson’s yachts in the show faced off in the 159 to 126 feet category and both came out winners.

SCOPE

Chef Sebastian Springer of HARLE took top honors with his imaginative 1920s New Year’s soiree menu. From a seared scallop amuse-bouche (03) to the tuna ceviche starter, K2 beef fillet and elegant Chocolate Decadence pudding, the meal was fit for a Gatsby-style celebration that would roar into the New Year. Sebastian artfully crafted with menu while catering to the dietary restriction of Celiac disease. Chef Jamie Sparks of BERILDA took second place with her Champagne-focused 1920 menu — which included four courses; one more than the judges’ required three. Bubbles were incorporated into every dish — making a splash with the judges. The first course of lobster tail and confit potatoes was highlighted with white chocolate “Champagne” Beurre Blanc and caviar. The second course featured chicken roulade, asparagus and a 02 Champagne hollandaise; the third course of Wagyu filet, seared foie gras and a blueberry Champagne sauce tickled taste buds and the dessert of mascarpone spheres with raspberry Champagne centers, pistachio milk crumbs and a Champagne sorbet was the perfect ending (02). Jamie’s menu also catered to a Celiac disease dietary requirement. Not to be outdone, the interior crew of BERILDA (01) also let their creativity shine through, creating a tablescape that took first place in the 126 to 159 feet category. Led by Chief Stewardess Robyne McNeil, the interior crew — which also included Second Stew Chantal Parker and Deck/Stew Andie Coulombe — fashioned a table fit for a festive Champagne-inspired 1920s New Year’s Eve that guests would not forget (04). Robyne worked with Chef Jamie to conceptualize a tablescape that would perfectly complement the menu. Congratulations to Northrop & Johnson’s awardwinning charter fleet on their superb efforts.

THE COMBINATION OF CRAFTSMANSHIP, EXPERIENCE, EXCHANGE RATES AND THE ABILITY TO CUSTOMIZE AND THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX SHOULD EARN CRESCENT CUSTOM YACHTS SERIOUS CONSIDERATION FOR ANYBODY CONTEMPLATING BUILDING A YACHT OR CONDUCTING A MAJOR REFIT NORTHROP & JOHNSON’S SALES BROKERS WES SANFORD AND TODD RITTENHOUSE TALK TO THE CANADIAN YACHT BUILDER TIM CHARLES ABOUT THE YARD’S RECENT SUCCESSES AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

Tell us a little about the history of Crescent Custom Yachts The story of Crescent Custom Yachts started more than 30 years ago when my grandfather, Jack Charles, who was a successful businessman, was unable to find a yard to build his dream yacht. He decided to take advantage of the local boatbuilding talent in the Vancouver area, utilizing a property on the marina that he owned at Crescent Beach. The result was a 115-foot (35m) yacht named HOTEI. Capitalizing on the experience and the success of this build, he decided to start his own shipyard and so Crescent Beach Boat Builders was born. Focusing on custom-built yachts from 92 feet (28m) to 118 feet (36m), Crescent Beach later became known as Crescent Custom Yachts. The yard had an impressive run of builds and a reputation for quality that lasted until the early 2000s. On my grandfather’s retirement in 2003, the Crescent name was sold to an American investor group who attempted to continue the brand at a new location.

How did you fit in to the family business? I spent my teenage years working in my grandfather’s shipyard. When the brand was sold in 2004, I created Platinum Marine. Utilizing my knowledge and contacts, many of which were former Crescent employees, including talented craftsmen and engineers, Platinum focused initially on yacht services. The brand quickly gained a reputation for quality work and conducted several successful “transformational” refits. As Platinum’s reputation grew, I was able to recruit top talent from Western Canada’s best yards, in addition to several experienced boat builders from other areas around the world. The result was an elite team that rivaled the best in North America. You re-acquired the Crescent Brand in 2015. How did this come about? The investment group that had purchased the Crescent brand from my grandfather went bankrupt in the midst of building a 144-foot (44m) motor yacht. This presented me with the opportunity to resurrect our family’s legacy. The partially completed

build was included in the acquisition, and along with the fantastic team who moved with me from Platinum, we took on the task of completing the project for a Miamibased couple. The project proved to be a very challenging endeavor, and required significant changes to the original design, including the owner’s requirement of the boat being completed under full Lloyd’s Register class and MCA LY3 compliance (she was originally started as ABS). The entire team took to the challenge, along with designer Jonathan Quinn Barnett, to create MUCHOS MAS. She was successfully launched in 2016, bringing Crescent back into the spotlight. I am proud to say that she was the star of the 2017 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and a finalist in four different categories in the 2018 Boat International Design and Innovation Awards. MUCHOS MAS has since taken on a very successful charter program, drawing rave reviews. What are you currently working on? Fast forward to 2018, Crescent Custom Yachts is full steam ahead with a full plate

of refit projects and new builds. There are two spec projects currently underway at the yard: a 117-foot (35m) Fast Pilothouse and a 110-foot (33.5m) Raised Pilothouse. The Crescent 117 is a collaboration with renowned naval architect Gregory C. Marshall. A sleek, modern design with a clean and contemporary fivestateroom layout, she will sleep 10 guests. Performance will be impressive with a 24-knot cruising speed and a top speed of 29 knots. Features include a “country style” main-deck galley, a large flybridge deck with jacuzzi tub and a large covered aft deck. She will be delivered this year. The 110-foot (33.5m) Raised Pilothouse, which is also a Gregory C. Marshall design, has exterior styling that is reminiscent of the classic Pacific Northwest builds that have been popular for so many years. The build is in a finished hull stage with a 2020 launch date. The Crescent 110 will sleep up to eight guests in four staterooms, including a master cabin with his and her ensuite bathroom. Key features on board include a large open galley with a sweeping

180-degree view, a massive aft deck and a Jacuzzi on the flybridge deck. What does the next decade have in store for Crescent Custom Yachts? In addition to these two spec builds, Crescent is moving forward with the construction of a 112-foot (34m) aluminum expedition yacht. The aluminum build showcases Crescent’s ability to construct yachts in both metal and FRP. Our focus remains “custom” and although we have standards in how we construct our builds, I take pride in the fact that we employ exceptionally talented boat builders and not production workers. We work well with external design and naval architecture teams to help bring their client’s ideas to reality, which is possible by having a small but very experienced in-house design and naval architect team who are able to quickly and capably relay information to and from the shop floor. I believe that the combination of talent, experience and flexibility to work with a client is Crescent Custom Yachts’ unique advantage in today’s

yachting landscape. In addition, American and European clients can take advantage of a very favorable exchange rate with the Canadian dollar. In your opinion, how does Crescent Custom Yachts differ to other builders? We understand that the process of building a custom yacht is elite and special, and the experience needs to be as fun and enjoyable as possible from start to finish. We take advantage of the geographical region we live and work in. Each time a customer makes a visit, we encourage it to be an experience for them and their family, not just a business trip. Whether it be an incorporated ski trip to Whistler, salmon fishing day trips, adventurous cruising to unique BC locations for lunch or just our world-class dining, we have a lot to offer clients coming to visit the shipyard. Whether a yacht owner is looking to engage in a major refit or looking to build the boat of their dreams, it is worth a trip to Vancouver to visit this family run yard.

THE GLORIOUS GRANDE DAME OF THE RIVIERA In a plum spot on the Côte d’Azur located halfway between the two glamorous towns of St. Tropez and Monaco, the centerpiece chateau (02) sits proudly on the tip of Cap d’Antibes in 22 acres of pine forest (06). With stunning ocean views (01) and fountain-strewn gardens, the Belle Époque landmark is renowned for its star-packed deck. The alumni are illustrious: Scott Fitzgerald was an early visitor; later fans included the Kennedys, Windsors and countless screen stars, many of whom continue to flock to sprinkle their stardust at this paparazzi-free zone. It has also attracted the waterborne for several decades, arriving by tender to the private teak jetty to experience the hotel’s superb gastronomic scene (03). Embracing the coastline, the hotel’s two restaurants boast spectacular views from their wraparound terraces (05) that overlook the bay and the nearby Îles de Lérins. For a truly memorable evening ashore, the gastronomic mecca, Eden-Roc Restaurant, will not disappoint. Executive Chef Arnaud Poëtte heads up the culinary team to include Head Chef Olivier Gaïatto and Pastry Chef Lilian Bonnefoi. The menu includes classic Provençal cuisine such as roast chicken, leg of lamb and bouillabaisse and signature dishes such as wild sea bass with basil and fennel mousse. Begin the evening celebrating with a Champagne aperitif at the Eden-Roc Champagne Lounge (04), or Bar Bellini for the house specialty — a sunset Bellini cocktail.

At lunchtime everyone descends on the elegant terrace of the Eden-Roc Grill for a classic French Riviera lunch. Chef Christophe Marc has created a light lunch menu with dishes ranging from marinated crab salad to sandwiches and hamburgers. Tender to the hotel jetty, or if it’s choppy, head to Port d’Antibes, 10 minutes along the coast and they will send a car. Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc is open from late April through late October. The Eden-Roc Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, from 12:30pm to 2:30pm and 7:30pm to 10:00pm. The dress code is formal and for dinner men are requested to wear a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and closed shoes. The Eden-Roc Grill is open throughout the season from May through September between 11:30am and 10:30pm. For dinner there is a formal dress code, but lunch is more relaxed and beachwear is fine. 06

SA F E T Y AT S E A

NAVIGATOR SPEAKS TO CYBER SECURIT Y SPECIALIST ANDREW RICE ABOUT THE SECURIT Y RISKS FACED BY SUPERYACHT OWNERS WORDS MIRIAM CAIN

Why do I need a Cyber Security expert? Superyachts are expensive luxuries and therefore their owners are naturally very wealthy, so when the two are combined they become a prime target for cyber security attacks. Ransomware, malware, and phishing are becoming more and more common issues on board superyachts, which is not surprising when you consider the increasing volume of technology required on board, not only for the yacht’s operations but for guest use.

How does Pelion Consulting work? At Pelion Consulting we believe that Cyber Security is all about education. We begin by educating ourselves and gaining a better understanding of the needs of the client, looking at where their risk appetite lies and what the reality is of the vulnerabilities they face and the optimal way to address them. We can then translate that and help our clients understand the meaningful action they can take to ensure they, their guests and crew remain safe and secure at all times.

Which Cyber Security threats does a superyacht owner face in particular? The cyber world is constantly changing and adapting to new technologies and new ways of working. Depending on which source you read, seventy to ninety percent of attacks start with an individual. You will hear words like “phishing” or “BEC” (Business Email Compromise), but what it really means is someone, either an individual or organised cyber-criminal teams, is trying to get a person to click a link or send money by crafting an email that is believable.

Pelion Consulting CEO Andrew Rice is a cyber security expert. He has decades of experience advising leading global organisations around the world on their cyber security. At Pelion Consulting Andrew brings his expertise and pragmatic approach to the superyacht sector to deliver true cyber data and privacy protection to yacht owners, crew and charterers.

C Y B E R

I see this being further developed with AI (Artificial Intelligence). Until recently, organised cyber crimes were a team of people who would research a company and use individuals to create an email. Just as businesses are beginning to use AI, so are cyber criminals making automated cyberattacks. Aside from the volume of attacks that this allows, there is the additional issue that cyber criminals won’t be as slow in adopting AI as they are not concerned about the legality or ethics. We will also see cyber attacks using multiple techniques to get to the potential victim. You may hear the term “the Internet of Things” (IoT), which is basically anything with a chip in it that is connected to the internet. This can be anything from toys, to TVs which you may not think can be used against you, to control systems such as navigation, power management and monitoring and automation such as Google Home and Alexa.

How does Pelion protect superyacht owners and their guests? Pelion highly values the privacy of our clients and we endeavour to ensure the sensitive nature of our engagement also protects our clients. One of our key differentiators is that we do not hold our client’s data. One of the best ways not to lose data, is not to have it in the first place. Keeping things as simple as possible, we educate the crew on the basics of cyber security and protect the privacy and safety through our “Predict Prevent Detect Respond” method, which ultimately means prevention of attack. We make no mention of our clients in the production of our work. All of our findings and solutions are included in a bespoke report and any recommendations are encrypted and remains with the relevant person. We take no information away with us. When you visit our website at Pelion-Consulting.com you won’t find any information regarding Pelion and what we do until you log in. You only find out about us by word of mouth, direct introduction or via carefully selected partners such as Northrop & Johnson.

You mentioned “risk appetite” earlier. What does this mean? A yacht offers absolute privacy and security, in fact this is what attracts most owners to the industry. However, with increasing cyber attacks that security has become threatened. A yacht should provide an owner with a platform in which he or she can conduct confidential business, should they wish, or simply relax and enjoy time on board without any threat to their privacy. With communication tools becoming more and more vital in even the most basic of tasks, and internet connections being permanently available, the privacy and isolation that a superyacht once provided is no longer a given. It is not only owners who are affected. For those who are chartering for pleasure then their risk appetite can be greater. Who cares if the TV is hacked and people can see through the camera on it, or read the viewing list and videos stored on the media player? For this person, their risk appetite is high. For others wishing to conduct highly confidential meetings, their risk appetite would be lower. And then there are the extreme cases of hijacking. A cyber-criminal could hack the media player and then potentially use that as a platform to attack the navigation system, sending the yacht on a course of their choosing, compromising the safety of all onboard.

N A V I G A T O R S E C U R I T Y

3 9

What Pelion does is help the owner understand where they lie on the risk appetite scale, and then ensure they have the right protection in place so they can go about their time on board in a secure and safe fashion. This can be as simple as education, or it can be about putting the right isolation in place to ensure that the media center cannot connect to the navigation system. Often, we find that it is about getting the basics right. Some high-profile hacks on shipping companies could have been prevented by employing basic cyber security measures. Pelion Consulting ensures the right amount is spent on the right prevention and that is found by understanding first what the risk is and where the owner’s appetite to that risk lies.

01 I LOVE THIS BOAT is a 145-foot Christensen yacht

OW N E R’ S S U I T E I L O V E T H I S B O AT WORDS JANINE ST. DENIS

Hal Griffith, the owner of the 145-foot (44.2m) Christensen luxury charter yacht I LOVE THIS BOAT, has been a boater for more than 50 years. His love affair with yachting began with a 48-foot ketch, before moving on to motor yachts, starting with a 65-foot Tollycraft and moving up to a 78-foot Hargrave and then to a 101-foot Hargrave. Today, Hal is the proud owner of his favorite yacht to date – a yacht he truly loves, hence the name.

Hal grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and from a very young age he found himself around and on the water. His wife, also from the region, did a lot of powerboating growing up, and is equally passionate about the ocean. Prior to purchasing I LOVE THIS BOAT, Hal and his wife were owner/ operators, captaining their own vessels. Their 145 Christensen marks the first time they’ve owned a crewed yacht. And how did Hal and his wife come to own this yacht? “We were at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show a couple of years ago,” says Hal, “While walking the docks, we saw another yacht we were very interested in. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, but a

few weeks after the show, we were contacted about I LOVE THIS BOAT. I flew back to Fort Lauderdale to see her.” It was love at first sight. “I thought the yacht was wonderful,” says Hal. “Christensen is a Pacific Northwest builder, very well respected. We found the yacht to be unique with so many special characteristics — we immediately loved the boat. She was already named ‘I LOVE THIS BOAT’ so we retained the name as it was a perfect fit.”

Hal and his wife are based in the Pacific Northwest, but recently purchased a home in Florida where they keep I LOVE THIS BOAT. Now that they are bi-coastal, they plan to use the yacht more often. “We’ve cruised to The Bahamas and around the Caribbean,” says Hal, “But we intend to see a lot more now that we’ll be spending more time on the East Coast.”

Hal and his family are avid fishermen, so a typical day aboard I LOVE THIS BOAT includes a spot of fishing. “We always start off our days with water activities — and, of course, fishing. We added a 500-poundcapacity ice machine, so we have the ability to load up the tender. Then we like to swim and go on-shore exploring.” He says the fishing in Florida and the Caribbean is a little different to fishing in the Pacific Northwest, but it’s still a favorite activity. “The whole purpose of the yacht is to gather our family and friends together, hook a good catch and have a seafood feast,” explains Hal.

03

04 05

Being from the Pacific Northwest, Hal and his family have traveled as far north as Glacier Bay in Alaska. “When we are on the West Coast our favorite place to cruise is the San Juan Islands and up to Glacier Bay,” says Hal. “Then, when we are on the East Coast and southern waters, the Caribbean is always enjoyable. It’s a totally different atmosphere. One is on the chilly side and one tropical with a warmer climate, but we like both for different reasons,” Hal explains. “We’ve spent a great deal of time in the British Virgin Islands and really love it there as well — the archipelago is one of our favorites to visit on I LOVE THIS BOAT.”

While Hal and his family do truly love their yacht, they can’t be aboard all of the time and so they decided to charter her out. “Our thinking was because we are not aboard all the time, we should keep the crew busy and allow others to enjoy a yacht that we feel is so special. We’re happy for her to not just stay in one place. We can go join her wherever she is,” says Hal. “Our philosophy is that we’re not number one, we’re number two. If there’s a charter, we’ll schedule our time around it.” “One of the reasons we were so enamored with the yacht is due to all of her unique features,” says Hal. “And that’s why we feel it’s important to charter her out; so that others can experience the yacht. She’s a classy boat with a classic style. That’s what we really liked about her. The elegant feel really drew us in, and we have heard from charter guests who have been extremely overwhelmed with the feel of the boat, especially with her warm and traditional atmosphere. While that may not appeal to everyone, anyone who’s been on board has stepped off in absolute awe.”

07

I LOVE THIS BOAT is in impeccable condition, receiving excellent maintenance throughout her life and refits as recently as 2018. “We have upgraded her for the purpose of having a quality boat and sharing it with people. I believe she is better now than when she was originally built,” says Hal. “My experience in yachting has shown me nothing but the best and that is something that we are proud to be able to share with our charter guests.” “The yacht has a unique aft deck with a beach club that is so low to the water that you can lounge and swim directly off the aft. It is large enough to accommodate larger groups, making it one of the most sociable areas on the yacht during the day,” says Hal. “Her upper deck dining area is spectacular and has a big round table where everyone can dine, and the skylounge bar is well laid out for entertaining in the evening.”

She also is outfitted with all the water toys you could possibly want. “When we hear someone would like to have a specific toy, we simply add it to the boat,” says Hal. “My favorite is probably the tender because I like to go fishing, but my grandchildren like the WaveRunners. We also have a slide that is quite long and steep — another toy that the kids love. We have an array of floating toys and everything from scuba diving gear to SeaBobs. This boat is probably as well-equipped toy wise as any other boat out there.” Hal maintains that for him chartering is not a business. “It would be a shame to have a yacht this wonderful sitting without use,” he says. “We have found that people who charter are very respectful, so we don’t mind the fact that someone else is on our boat. If the boat is available and someone wants to use it, we are very open to it,” says Hal. “We also have a great crew who look after our yacht and maintain it in top form. We have an excellent captain and it comes from the top down.

The crew are very compatible, vivacious and service-oriented. Every charter we’ve had just raves about them,” Hal says with great pride. “Each crewmember has an excellent reputation. They are a very harmonious group dedicated to making sure guests enjoy themselves.” If you are interested in chartering I LOVE THIS BOAT for Summer 2019, you likely can find her in the Bahamas. “We might also go up to the New England area,” says Hal. “It all depends on charter interest, but we will keep her on the east coast this year; and next year we might move to another destination — possibly the Mediterranean or Alaska.” The 145-foot (44.2m) I LOVE THIS BOAT is available to charter through Northrop & Johnson in the Bahamas this summer season. Prices are from US$150,000 per week for up to 10 guests. For further information, contact your N&J charter expert charter@northropandjohnson.com

01 The aft deck is well appointed with ample seating and relaxation areas 02 SOLO is styled inside and out by Francesco Paszkowski with naval architecture by Studio Ruggiero 03 Designed with charter guests in mind, SOLO is a great example of the best Italian design

Genoa is a city rich in history and culture that is thought to date back as a settlement as far as 4,000 years BC. Located at the extreme north of Italy’s west coast, it is no surprise that her history is peppered with mighty naval fleets, explorers, pirates and adventurous traders. Today the city is still centered around a significant port that is estimated to process well over 50 million tons of cargo every year, but for Northrop & Johnson, our trade interests are directed toward an area close to Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport. Here, in a state-of-the-art shipyard situated by Genoa Airport Marina, Tankoa Yachts has produced some of the most eye-catching and impressive superyachts to be included in N&J’s charter fleet. The relationship between N&J and Tankoa has always been strong. The brokerage team frequently visit the facility, and the 227-foot (69m) Tankoa build SUERTE was a very successful addition to N&J’s charter fleet. In 2018 Tankoa reached new heights of excellence when they launched a second vessel based on the same naval platform as SUERTE. An elegant Francesco Paszkowski-designed craft that is brimming with luxurious features, the 236-foot (72m) SOLO has become one of the most desirable charter yachts in the world. She too has been entrusted to N&J for charter, further strengthening the relationship between the two companies. It is easy to feel enthusiastic about SOLO. While a yacht of this size and stature would be a welcome addition to any charter fleet, it has to possess qualities that enhance its desirability in an ocean that is welcoming an increasing number of sizeable luxury vessels every year. The owner of SOLO worked extensively with Tankoa to ensure that SOLO wasn’t lost among the charter fleet. Every detail has been considered for charter purposes, including the flexibility of her layout. Not only does she offer great privacy for the owner, she also offers a remarkable degree of flexibility when engaged in charter.

The owner’s deck is a strong example of this. An elevator leading to this level can be blocked by a private code and offers a haven of peace and relaxation. A touch-and-go helipad on the aft deck allows easy access to the owner’s apartment and a beautiful stateroom with a king-size bed. The owner’s area has direct access to a private terrace with Jacuzzi. In addition to the grand suite, the owner also has access to a private media and study room which can be converted into an extra cabin for security or close guests. The deck space on board SOLO is equally impressive. A private and secluded sundeck offers the opportunity for guests to enjoy the very best views from the highest point of the vessel and is well appointed with seating and sunbathing areas. The owner’s deck will especially appeal to many charter guests and yacht owners. Here the helipad procures bountiful deck space for use as a dance floor or area for socializing, and a generously proportioned hot tub is flanked by inviting sun beds and overlooked by an outside bar that is within easy reach of a breakfast table. From here, a wide staircase with beautifully polished stainless steel railings leads down to an expansive upper aft deck. This area is well suited to formal dining and can host sizeable parties of guests who can enjoy the fruits of the yacht’s formidable galley, designed by Italian restaurant professional Marrone. Perhaps the most sensational feature on board SOLO is the sea level beach club. This area is accessed via large sliding windows that let light flood into an area equipped with a Hamman, sauna, gymnasium and a relaxing seating area. Immediately above the sliding doors Paszkowski has found a clever way of gaining sufficient space for a plunge pool, and has added skylights to the bottom of the pool so that light can shine through the rippling water to create a relaxing ambience in the beach club below. SOLO’s interior is a tribute to Italian design. Dark shades of oak accompany Macassar ebony accents that are punctuated by colorful fabrics and playful works of art. Many of the areas on board, including the master stateroom, benefit from fullheight windows so that vast ambients can be illuminated by natural sunlight and the beauty of the natural materials used can be fully appreciated. Even when every one of the six guest staterooms is fully occupied there is an abundance of space to enjoy, from the casually elegant skylounge, complete with a grand piano, to the sophisticated main deck salon, where a winter garden overlooks the aft deck. The Genovese have always been tremendously proud of their history, and as Tankoa continues to produce yachts like this they have every reason to feel proud of the future, too. The 236-foot (72m) SOLO is available for charter in the Mediterranean this summer and is priced from €650,000 per week for up to 12 guests. For more information on chartering SOLO, please contact your N&J charter expert, or email charter@northropandjohnson.com.

01 48 Wallytender The iconic Wally Yachts runabout is reborn in a new 48-footer. It’s the first collaboration between Wally and the Ferretti Group. It retains the bold styling that is a trademark of a Wally brand with angular lines and a sleek windscreen. The 48 Wallytender is an update on the original Wallytender, while bringing in new design features and amenities. Taking a note from the larger 118 Wallypower motor yacht, the new 48 shares its innovative opening bulwark. The aft sections of the bulwarks fold down, creating a larger swim platform for sunning and easy access to the water. The cockpit seating can be configured to create a large sunpad aft, or face inward to the dining table. The runabout also boasts a more voluminous interior with plenty of space to tuck away for an afternoon nap or rinse off the saltwater in a full-size shower. A day boating dream, there’s plentiful storage for watersport toys and also two separate cooking areas — in the cabin and alfresco — for keeping you satiated while enjoying a day on the water. Powered by new Volvo IPS 650 engines with a total of 1,020hp as standard, the 48 Wallytender can reach a top speed of 38 knots, and joystick controls make handling a breeze. 02 Forty Love The “forty” in Reliant Yachts’ new X40 Express tender has a double meaning: not only is the boat 40 feet long, she has been proven in sea trials to run smoothly at 40 knots, topping out at 40.7 knots at 3,300rpm. Reliant has created a modern take on the New England “Down East” express yacht. The X40 Express has the protected wheelhouse that’s indicative of this style of yacht, but a silver-painted hull and teak topsides give a touch of glamour. A contemporary profile combines clean lines with a straight plumb bow, and a low-profile cap-rail — painted to match the silver hull — frames the beautifully finished deck. The X40 Express isn’t all she seems — the carbon fiber hardtop can be removed, transforming this coupe into a sexy convertible. No matter the version the owner enjoys, he/ she and guests will be comfortable in the deep protected cockpit that offers seating for at least eight adults in high-backed leather bench seats. Reliant worked to max out the interior as well, which features a stateroom, bathroom with shower and a galley and is a perfect escape from the sun on a day out or for an overnighter. Best of all, the tender has been designed to slip into her mothership’s garage.

03 Land & Sea Have a James Bond moment by taking the wheel of this wildly fun amphibious vehicle. One moment you’re racing along the road, the next you’re driving down the beach and straight into the water. The Gibbs Sports Amphibians Terraquad is designed to take on land or sea with ease, doing 50mph on land and 45mph in the water. It only takes five seconds to transition from one mode to the other, and less than three seconds to get up onto the plane in the water, so your Bond-style chase scene will go down without a hitch. Created by Michigan-based Gibbs Sports Amphibians, this aquatically inclined amphibious Jeep is a step-up from Gibbs’ previous invention, the QuadSki, which combined an ATV and a Jetski for fun in the water or on terra firma. Independent coil springs and hydraulic dampers make the suspension stable, even as you off-road. The Terraquad is powered by Gibbs’ proprietary jet drive, and includes features like trail and marine navigation lighting, should you find yourself away from safe harbor once the sun has set. 04 Sea It all The new Seabob F5 SR combines the thrill of flying underwater with the ability to capture your dolphin-like exploits on a built-in camera. It is the most powerful — and fastest — Seabob yet with the F5 SR’s E-Jet Power System packing a punch. Yet it’s also perfectly adept at slower speeds and easy to control in a low gear. Two rear fins aide in maneuverability and stability as you drive and dive beneath the surface. An extra bit of fun is found in the Seabob Camsystem, which has two full-HD cameras built into the body of the watercraft. One is set in the bow to look at the watery road ahead, the other is a selfie cam to capture your sheer glee. And Wi-Fi transmission allows this footage to be easily shared with those who prefer to stay above the waterline. This Seabob can also be personalized to match your yacht’s trademark color scheme for no extra charge. Weighing just 77 pounds, it’s easy to deploy and takes up little space in the tender stowage with a patented Seabob rack available to keep it in place.

MAPLE CHAI SOUR COCKTAILS There’s nothing quite like a cool cocktail at the end of the day — or at any time for that matter; after all, it is always five o’clock somewhere. Relax on board and wet your whistle with a Maple Chai Sour — cheers. The Maple Chai Sour was created by Stewardesses Carly Benjamin and Katie Leetz of charter yacht I LOVE THIS BOAT. The cocktail (an original recipe) is a take on a whiskey sour, but with sweet ingredients and rum. The Maple Chai Sour uses buzz flowers to give the drinker a dynamic cocktail experience. The buzz flower numbs certain parts of the mouth, including taste buds, so when someone bites the flower and then tastes the drink a second time, the flavor experience is completely different. Additionally, each drinker will experience a different flavor than the person next to them due to the complexities of the flower’s effect on each individual’s taste buds.

The Maple Chai Sour Ingredients 2 oz AKAL Chai Rum Reserve 1 oz lemon juice 2 oz egg white 1/2 oz maple syrup Method Shake all ingredients with ice then pour into a chilled martini glass with one tablespoon of blueberry caviar at the bottom (use blueberry syrup as a substitute). It is optional to rim the martini glass with maple syrup and sugar. Sprinkle top of drink with cinnamon, Angostura bitters and a buzz flower garnish. How to taste 1. Take a sip 2. Bite the buzz flower (do not swallow the whole thing so as to not overpower the senses — a small bite will do) 3. Take a second drink to enjoy what will taste like a whole new cocktail

Return to Prep School The Preppy Handbook’s 40th anniversary is a year away and although its author, Ms. Birnbach, didn’t set out to write a defining anthology of a segment of style, it became just that. Her tongue-in-cheek review of a style archetype has its rightful place in fashion history. In menswear, preppy style shines brightest in the spring and summer when vibrantly hued classics are a welcome respite to the somber tones of winter. We’ve highlighted some of our favorites from brands that stand the test of time. Ralph Lauren is a name recognized in every corner of the globe and is as American as apple pie. Mr. Lauren began his eponymous line by infusing mens’ basics with his impeccably tailored stamp of upper-crust, and millennials are now taking notice. Madras blazers are effortlessly paired with a striped button down. A rainbow rugby pullover paired with strategically cuffed jeans evoke Ivy-league vibes whether college is in your game-plan or not. Wearing a Polo RL look may even get you into The Harvard Club — at least until they ask for your ID. Paul Stuart (01) & (03) is a ubiquitous name in the menswear game and evokes thought bubbles of summers in The Hamptons and The Great Gatsby. It began as a men’s haberdashery in 1938 and now the quiet retailer boasts shops on Madison Avenue, Chicago and Washington D.C. as well as e-commerce. It amps up spring offerings with brightly colored ginghams and primary color pops on thick cotton polos for the active man on the go. For adventurous types, directional designers like Todd Snyder (02) and David Hart (pictured previous page) give a quirky take on the classics. Todd Snyder shows a varsity jacket paired with an extra-large gingham shirt, while Mr. Hart’s look takes inspiration from TV’s The Big Bang Theory giving a polo shirt, shorts and gym socks a big dose of irony. New on the scene is an urban luxe sneaker and accessory brand called Hotel Motel (04) which supercharges basics with sumptuous materials like French whole grain bullhide and uses a mineral tanning process. Their baby blue sneakers are leather-lined for optimum comfort, and you’ll look super-fly wearing them while holding that 70s gym bag. Preppy style is timeless but designers will always step up their game with tweaks of proportion, sharply cut tailoring and use of vibrant colors.

Haute Couture It’s been well over a decade since “Boho Chic” entered the fashion lexicon and although its popularity ebbs and flows, it remains a strong choice for women’s spring wardrobes. Ethnic prints, native embroidery and billowy skirts are a welcome respite from winter and at the heart of this is the travel effect. With designers skipping across the globe on business and pleasure trips, it’s no surprise that their collections are an expression of what they have seen on their travels. Designer Stephanie Von Watzdorf weaves a story of her travels but the pieces from her globally minded Figue (08) & (09) collection are an assertion of her deep love of exploration. Did you ever decide to buy a cowboy hat while in Texas, swearing to wear it at home? It just doesn’t work. The Figue collection, however, reimagines traditional ethnic dress into clothing that does work at home, and can easily be worn in women’s everyday lives.

08

Anna Sui (05) loves a hippie girl, sprinkling her runway with a post-modern buffet of influences. She’s not affected by trends and is unafraid of piling on the accessories. Naming her spring runway collection Wanderlust, Sui incorporates floral prints, brocades, kaftans over pants, turbans, and bucket hats into a patchwork of free-spirited girly looks. The Missoni (06) family has created distinctive knitwear for 65 years and this anniversary runway gave a message of lightness in color and gossamer cobweb-like layers. Peasant skirts, turbans, kaftans and shawls all conjured up dreams of far-off worlds, created in their very iconic manner. How to accessorize the look? Gaimo espadrilles (07) & (10) are the perfect accompaniment for any boho-chic look. Whether you are headed to discover a new culture or staying in your own backyard, look out for these brands that weave a tale of wanderlust into their collections.

01 The Year of Knots From measuring speeds to securing yachts, knots are synonymous with the yachting world and have been relied on for a variety of uses over the centuries. The Year of Knots is a masterpiece by Windy Chien that inspires one to not only appreciate the skill of knot tying, but also to appreciate the beauty of each individual knot. Using minimal materials and color, it takes each knot and puts it on show, displaying its complexity and splendor. Windy’s journey with The Year of Knots began with the purchase of The Ashley Book of Knots. From there Windy spent the next year learning how to tie a new knot every day as well as researching its history and use. At the end of the year, Windy had learned 366 knots and created an art piece that is truly inspiring in aesthetics and skill. Adding a nautical flare to any yacht or home Windy can be commissioned to create custom-sized knot walls, or to reproduce unique versions of The Year of Knots.

The simple shapes and lines of the piece make it both functional and sculptural at the same time. The piece blends mirrored stainless steel, which has been bent into a half-moon shape, crossing over Tikal green marble and Statuario marble. The mirrored stainless steel reflects the splendor of the stone below as well as its surroundings. 04 Bloom Cabinet The Bloom Cabinet immediately draws eyes with its vibrant colors and striking design. Inspired by the lotus flower in full bloom, the handcrafted piece is a collaboration between Australian industrial designer Adam Goodrum and French marquetry artisan Arthur Seigneur. Created using a centuries-old straw inlay technique, the cabinet’s semi-circular doors are comprised of 4,320 sections of premium-grade rye straw from Burgundy, France, that are overlaid onto black-stained oak joinery. Using a custom 12-color palette ranging from cobalt to light pink, the straws are manually split, flattened and infused in vats of pigment for 24 hours. The cabinet’s interior is just as luxurious as its exterior and features a white maple lining. In total the Bloom Cabinet took over 400 hours to make. This is a rare piece of stunning beauty, impressive technique and functionality.

C U LT U R E S P Y STUNT ART WORDS DANIEL SCHEFFLER

Shortly afterwards Banksy released a video where he explains how he installed a secret shredder in the frame of this particular work. Known for his subversive, sometimes even satirical work, the artist upended the very idea of auctions — turning the destruction into its very own work of art. Or did he turn the auction into some theater of art? Banksy then quoted the great Picasso in his Instagram post. “The urge to destroy is also a creative urge.” A wink was given, and the art world split at its very Take a look back to October last year, when seam. Some of the art cognoscenti praised Banksy, the anonymous England-based street artist, vandal, political activist and film Banksy’s ingenuity and loved that he upended the traditional model, and others poured vitriol director, was up to some fancy new tricks. forth criticizing him for his, what they saw as At a somewhat dull Sotheby’s auction, a “desperate need for attention.” We can only during the art world’s most important week wonder if Michelangelo had some of this when in London, just as a version of his famous artwork, Girl With Balloon, grasped $1.4 million, he was painting chapels and frescos, or when Leonardo da Vinci decided to start sketching it self-destructed. A lovely stunt, indeed. his inventions, what were his critics saying? Attention seekers in sooth, perhaps. We are not talking the type of stunt that you’ve seen in every Mission Impossible film. As much as these are also absolute feats, requiring both great skill and a daringness of sorts, these stunts are more about publicity and gaining attention. Isn’t that, perhaps, the very nature of the art world? Unless you are creating art for yourself with absolutely nobody seeing it, of course.

01

02

But what is art, an auction, if not just another way of deliberately seeking attention? “Look at me,” “buy me,” and “here I am” charging up the price to the maximum. This isn’t the first time we have seen stunt art. And it will not be the last. Think of the Spanish artist Salvador Dali, who rose to fame in the 1930s, not because he was doing what all the other famed artists were creating, but for the very opposite. He was attracting attention by going into surrealism. Dali greatly influenced film, fashion and even politics by just simply seeing what nobody else was seeing — a world beyond what was real. But at the time critics called him an “attention seeker” and even a “hoax” and “conman.”

Frida Kahlo, the Mexican artist, did something similar where she simply drew what her mind was seeing — shocking, or even stunt-like, for a woman of the 20th century. Then, of course, there is the great pop artist of the last century, Andy Warhol, who created everything he did for attention, and publicly admitted he craved fame and publicity. We could argue that Banksy picked up a baton from artists dating back to the last century or even further into the past. How do we know whether the Khoisans’ first drawings on their caves in Southern Africa were as reviled or celebrated? What I am certain of is that when they started drawing on the walls of caves, someone in the group didn’t like it.

“I am not entirely sure I grasp what Stunt Art truly means, but if it is about provocative or shocking tactics to grab public attention, then art history is littered with examples of many artists that also pushed the envelope and made significant contributions to the canon of contemporary art,” shares Storm Janse van Rensburg, the Head Curator at the Savannah College of Art and Design® (SCAD). “In our more immediate past, some tactics can ring hollow, such as Damien Hirst’s catastrophic Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable ”. He goes on to say, “I am for art that is nuanced, and complex, and poetic, and able to resonate with our current zeitgeist. And it could be softly whispering its message to you, or hit you like a sledgehammer. Also, I think we need to see this [stunt art] in context of other practices and approaches that are equally important and valid, and necessary to describe and respond to the complexity of our lived experience.”

06

But really what is this thing the media is calling “stunt art” then? Is it really even “a thing?” We could argue that Marina Abramovic, the esteemed performance artist, feeds on stunt. For one of her performances in 1974, called “Rhythm O,” Abramovic stood in front of an audience next to a table with 72 objects. The onlookers were given notes inviting them to use any of these objects on her, in whichever way they pleased for six hours. Objects included feathers, whips, scalpels, a rose thorn and even a gun. What started off with some soft prodding, turned into rose thorns digging into the artist’s body, and at some point, she even had a gun held to her head. “What I learned was that…if you leave it up to the audience, they can kill you,” said Abramovic.

Museums are not just offering you hours of standing around looking at pictures, companies like Museum Hack are turning the model onto its head and offering you something unique and extraordinary. Take, for instance, one of their tours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York — instead of just showing you the famous works, they take you on a tour of unusual, insignificant but far more interesting artifacts and quirky objects. Or their feminist tour where only female artists are explored. As Holly Frey, from the podcast Stuff You Missed in History Class, says, “History wasn’t just made by straight, white men; women have always been there.” At SCAD, their visitor experience of moving through the museum incorporates multiple approaches, akin to a choreography through the various galleries. “All art is experiential, but we also try and understand what it means to immerse yourself in a project,” says Janse van Rensburg. Recent examples of exhibitions at SCAD include large-scale installations by Chiharu Shiota, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and Robin Rhode. “There is an expectation that museums should be sites of entertainment, which we embrace, but are also a place of learning, of knowledge, of contemplation, and our work is to stimulate students and visitors intellectually, and broaden their world views,” adds Janse van Rensburg.

So, contemplating Banksy once more; is he perhaps both complicit and wonderfully benefiting from sales? Is it all a hoax? “I admire Banksy for being able to grab attention with such cheap tricks,” says Janse van Rensburg. “To my mind he is not challenging the art world in any way, but simply exploiting its pretty obvious flaws, loopholes and existing power dynamics. The art market has the incredible knack to absorb its fiercest, or So perhaps there is an expectation today, in the year 2019, that art is a form of amusement lamest critics, and turn it to its own use.” or delight. It has decidedly stepped down from its sheeny pedestal and decided that social media can spread it, critics can be teenagers with no art knowledge, and everyone can exchange in the sport of art. Even the art fairs are no longer for art buyers and snobs, but rather for people looking for a good time.

AUTO PURE ELECTRIC WORDS SIMON DE BURTON

THE WELLBEING OF THE ENVIRONMENT HAS LONG BEEN A TOPIC OF INTENSE INTERNATIONAL DEBATE; NAVIGATOR BRINGS YOU UP TO SPEED ON THE MOST STYLISH ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLES

7 7

7 8

N A V I G A T O R A U T O

PURE ELECTRIC SILENT RUNNING Electric cars might be the hot motoring topic of the moment, but they are nothing new — the Detroit Electric company, for example, produced 13,000 of them between 1907 and 1939 and counted Thomas Edison, John D. Rockefeller and even Henry Ford’s wife among its loyal customers. But now that the world is waking up to the downsides of fossil-fueled vehicles after its 80-year love affair with gasoline and diesel, electric cars have shot to the top of the planet-saving agenda and every major marque has at least one model either on its books or in development, with many pledging to make their entire production either hybrid or all-electric within the next few years. Although the big manufacturers have been toying with electricity for some time (Honda, for example, launched its beautifully engineered Insight hybrid 20 years ago) it was the entrepreneurial Elon Musk (07) who really jolted the industry into action with the introduction of the Tesla Roadster in 2008. Tesla prevails as the best-known and most successful maker of purely electric cars, with around half-a-million having been sold worldwide across the current three-model range, which will shortly be joined by the new, high-performance Roadster. Now, however, Tesla is facing increasing competition from major manufacturers that are finally catching up with the growing acceptance of all-electric driving in every category from compact to supercar. Here’s our pick of six of the best (with a Tesla included, of course...) 07

01 Tesla Roadster Although it has yet to enter production, the order book for the new Tesla Roadster has been open for two years. The car’s remarkable on-paper specification has already attracted plenty of would-be owners to place hefty deposits. Tesla claims the Roadster will be, quite simply, “The quickest car in the world” with “record-setting acceleration, range and performance”. That means a 250mph top speed, a zero-60mph time of a gut-wrenching 1.9 seconds and the ability to cover a quarter mile from a standing start in less than nine seconds. Perhaps more impressive, however, is Tesla’s claim that the Roadster will be able to travel up to 600 miles on a single charge of its 200-kilowatt-hour battery pack, thereby eliminating the so-called “range anxiety” that puts off many drivers of conventional, gasoline-engine cars from switching to electric power. The battery pack will feed three electric motors, one driving the front wheels and two driving the back, while the twoplus-two coupe bodywork will feature an all-glass, electric roof as well as a soft convertible top. – Prices from $200,000 (Standard) $250,000 (Founder’s Series) tesla.com

02 Rimac C_Two Croatian engineer Mate Rimac has translated his garden shed hobby of producing extremely fast, one-off electric cars into a globally recognized automotive business in little more than a decade. His eponymous marque is best known for the Concept_One, a hugely rapid supercar of which just eight examples were built. With one large, very powerful electric motor at each wheel, carbon fiber bodywork designed around the powertrain and low-slung battery pack that could be recharged in just 30 minutes, the $1 million Concept_One set a new benchmark for electric hyper cars. As the name suggests, it was intended principally as a concept car, but, at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, Rimac unveiled its even more extreme Concept_Two model. With just 150 examples to be made, the Concept_Two will produce the equivalent of 1,887 horsepower and a truck-like 2,300 Newton Meters of torque, or “pulling power.” The 250plus-mph car can sprint from standstill to 60mph in under two seconds and, remarkably, can travel more than 350 miles on a single charge. A special blue-painted version wowed the crowds at last summer’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California — although its radical looks and performance seemed to attract less interest than the fact that it was equipped with a bespoke fitting designed to carry two Champagne Methuselahs (each the equivalent of eight bottles) and a pair of flutes. – Prices from approx $2 million rimac-automobili.com

03 Audi E-Tron Although Audi has been dabbling in pure electric car design for a decade (its E-Tron sports car first appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show) only now has it released its first production version in the form of the e-tron SUV. From the outside, it fits in seamlessly with the rest of the marque’s SUV models, save for a neat, electric flap that opens to reveal a charging point instead of a conventional fuel filler. With an electric motor on each axle, the car hits 60mph in less than six seconds and tops-out at 124mph, so performance is easily on a par with its combustion-engine stablemates. However, it scores over them by being almost silent in operation, emission-free and considerably cheaper to run, thanks to being able to cover close to 250 miles on a single charge. That adequate, if not truly extensive, range is helped by a regenerative braking system that returns a small amount of charge to the batteries. The level of “recuperation” is adjustable via a pair of steering wheel-mounted paddles — a system said to be especially effective during in-town driving. Also impressive is the fact that the battery pack can be recharged from empty to 80 percent capacity in a halfhour, making the car entirely practical for multiple journeys in a single day. Sensibly, Audi has chosen not to make the styling of the car futuristic. The only nod to the sometimes Sci-Fi world of all-electric vehicles is the optional fitment of a pair of cameras instead of conventional door mirrors. Other than that, the e-tron is just like a “normal” SUV. Its battery pack has been designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, leaving space for five people, 22 cubic feet of luggage in the back and an additional two cubic feet in a waterproof load area beneath the hood (where old-fashioned cars keep their engines.) – Prices from $74,800 audiusa.com 04 BMW i3S If you are looking for an all-electric car from a premium maker, BMW’s i3 is a great place to start. Perhaps surprisingly, the neat-looking i3 has been around for six years and has proved popular, reliable and practical as a daily city car. It is not one, however, for long journeys due to its short range (around 100 miles per charge, with an additional 90-odd miles being available if the optional “range extender” small gasoline engine is specified). This year, however, the i3 offering has not only had a general makeover but has been added to by the arrival of the sporty “S” model. As you would expect, it comes with a slightly more powerful electric motor and a marginally higher top speed of around 100mph while the handling has been improved with the use of wider axles and lowered suspension. Inside, meanwhile, the i3S’s green credentials are expressed through a dashboard made from recycled plastic and leather seats tanned with olive leaf dye. – Prices from $47,650 bmwusa.com

05 Aston Martin Rapide E Aston Martin has partly built its sporting reputation on the use of powerful, howling V8 and V12 gasoline engines, so news that it was entering the world of EVs came as a surprise to die-hard fans of the historic British marque. But, the looks, performance and rarity of the car chosen to debut Aston’s first electric powertrain have encouraged buyers to line up. Based on the svelte V12-engined Rapide four-door, two-plus-two grand tourer, the Rapide E features two electric motors driving the rear wheels and no fewer than 5,600 lithium ion cells positioned throughout the car in the spaces where the regular model’s engine, gearbox and fuel tank are situated. Expected to be capable of 150mph and capable of a sub-four-second zero-60 sprint, the car has been developed in partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering, an offshoot of the Formula One constructor. As a result, it uses re-worked suspension for enhanced handling, while the near-silence of the electric motors is enhanced with aerodynamic wheels fitted with low rolling resistance tires filled with noise-dampening foam. First deliveries of the car were due to take place this year, but that has now been revised to the first quarter of 2020. Aston wants to get the Rapide E right first time, not least because it will serve as the envoy for a new range of all-electric Lagonda-badged cars. – Prices on request astonmartin.com

06 Jaguar I-Pace Judged by some members of the motoring press to be the best electric car currently on sale, the I-Pace honors Jaguar’s sporting heritage by combining exceptionally sharp handling with a punchy electric drive train that produces the equivalent of 396 horsepower. A “premium” SUV, the car competes in the same arena as the Audi e-tron and Tesla Model X while remaining relatively affordable — particularly in entry-level “S” guise. In addition to the performance and useful 298-mile range (which requires a 12-hour charge) the I-Pace stands out for a truly high-end interior that’s bedecked in a choice of high-grade materials ranging from traditional topquality leathers to high-tech fabrics. The sophisticated touchscreen dashboard is illuminated with a crisp white light at night, and the acoustic glass and aerodynamic body design, combined with the silent-running electric motors, make for an almost eerily quiet interior. The car also benefits from features such as cabin pre-heating/ pre-cooling (which can be controlled remotely via a smartphone) and an ionizing system that pumps the interior with high-quality air after cleaning up the harmful particles caused by the combustion engines of the I-Pace’s less ecologically sound combustion-engine rivals. – Prices from $69,500 jaguarusa.com

This sun-soaked corner of southeast France is a quintessential summer playground for superyachts. From the legendary beach clubs of Pampelonne to the renowned haute cuisine of St. Tropez, Cannes and Monaco, the 40 miles of coastline is the epicenter of yachting, attracting some eighty percent of the charter fleet during the summer months. ST. TROPEZ & ÎLES D’HYÈRES Once a quiet fishing village, St. Tropez shot to fame in the 1950s when director Roger Vadim made the film Et Dieu…créa la femme (And God Created Woman) starring the stunning Brigitte Bardot. The film itself sealed their careers as well as the fate of St. Tropez, which has shimmered in the spotlight with its star appeal ever since. Dine @ With its celebrity credentials confirmed it’s hardly surprising that there is a glut of fantastic restaurants in St. Tropez. For a gastronomic feast in a spectacular setting La Vague d’Or is one of two restaurants at the Cheval Blanc St. Tropez (known as La Rèsidence de la Pinède until earlier this year). Chef Arnaud Donckele dishes up an eight-course tasting menu making full use of Mediterranean flavors. With three Michelin stars, five toques and a score of 19/20 by Gault & Millau, be prepared for a memorable evening of gastronomic excellence. This spring sees Hôtel Byblos opening a brand new restaurant Cucina to replace Alain Ducasse’s Le Rivea. Still to be overseen by Ducasse, the new eatery will be 100 percent Italian. Just a ten-minute walk from the old port of St. Tropez, the elegant Relais & Chateaux property La Bastide de St. Tropez is home to the Michelin-starred restaurant L’Olivier. Again, elegantly crafted dishes are made from locally sourced produce. There are excellent tasting opportunities for foodies on Île du Levant, including La Colombe. Pascal Bonamy’s flavorsome Mediterranean cuisine has earned this fantastic restaurant a coveted Michelin star.

Drink @ Lying just around the headland from St. Tropez the sandy three-mile stretch of Pampelonne beach is dotted with some of the hippest beach clubs in the world. Ask your charter yacht’s captain to book you in for lunch at the hip French Riviera institution, Le Club 55. Probably the classiest and certainly the most discreet of all the beach restaurants on Pampelonne, it started life as a simple beach shack and was adopted as the canteen for the crew making And God Created Woman in 1955 – hence the club’s name. Set back from the beach on a canvas-shaded deck, consummate host Patrice de Colmont welcomes a steady flow of yacht tenders arriving to the private jetty throughout the summer. The ever-popular Bagatelle Beach remains a magnet for the stylish beau monde, who come for its terrific Mediterranean-style cuisine, friendly staff and a jubilant soupçon of party atmosphere that still allows you to relax. Alternatively, Shellona draws a young crowd and was one of the top places to be seen in 2018. It promises daybeds, cocktails and bucket-loads of glamor. And new for 2019, Hôtel Byblos opens its own Byblos Beach Ramatuelle, with a restaurant serving light Mediterranean cuisine. Return to port for a top up at Maison Blanche Champagne Bar. The stylish and sophisticated hideaway serves nothing but champagne in a stunning courtyard setting. A great spot to enjoy a pre-dinner glass of bubbly. For a restaurant and brasserie that turns into a club after dark, head to L’Opéra Saint-Tropez where you will find cabaret and a variety of performing artists and entertainers. The Brasserie des Arts has a similar vibe, where, as the evening progresses the atmosphere heats up with dancing on the tables and much else besides. If cabaret isn’t your thing, then the famous Les Caves du Roy is a fabulous A-list haunt located underground right at the heart of the Hôtel Byblos. 04

Culture @ Climb the wooded hill to the 16th-century Citadel that sits atop St. Tropez for stunning views across the village. Built to defend the coast, it was also used by the French authorities to watch the Tropéziens who were far too rebellious and seditious for their liking. Art lovers should step ashore on Porquerolles to the Fondation Carmignac where you will find Edouard Carmignac’s extensive art collection.

Anchor @ Îles d’Hyères Escape to the wilder corners of the Riviera and visit the Îles d’Hyères. These sun-drenched islands lie just west of St. Tropez and offer unpretentious charms. Low-key in every way, discover Porquerolles by bicycle (private cars are forbidden), enjoying the violet bougainvillea and windswept pines as you ride along. Step ashore on the neighboring rugged island of Port-Cros, which, with its scattering of beach bars and palms, has a Caribbean vibe.

Shop @ The quintessential French town of St. Tropez is well known for fashion, with iconic labels such as Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton all having a noticeable presence along the picturesque cobblestone streets. Stepping into Dior is an event in itself – the boutique is housed in an 18th century honey-colored stone hôtel particulier (grand townhouse) with a stunning garden restaurant.

Like Porquerolles, Port-Cros and the surrounding waters are a protected conservation area and as such its hilly trails are impassable by any vehicle and provide stunning scenery at every turn. Some of the most spectacular sights, however, lie beneath the water. Discover the underwater trail with panels explaining the marine flora and fauna as you snorkel off the beach at La Palud.

Spa @ La Réserve Ramatuelle Escape the crowds at Pampelonne and head to La Réserve Ramatuelle. The hotel’s 10,000-square-foot wellness center offers customized programs (think luxurystyle bootcamps), hydrotherapy sessions and a fabulous selection of massages and facials.

CANNES & ANTIBES Artists, poets and writers have all fallen under the spell of Cannes and Antibes, and before them the Romans and Napoleon. Today, both Cannes and Antibes are illuminated with a glow that goes beyond the ethereal sunlight, and boast culture, restaurants and elegant boutiques ashore.

Set in the medieval hilltop village of St Paul de Vence, the iconic La Colombe d’Or has a fantastic ambience. Dine in front of original works of art by Picasso, Matisse and Braque while enjoying authentic Provençal cuisine. Reservations are essential.

The two-Michelin-starred La Palme d’Or is set in the Hôtel Martinez on the Cannes Croisette. Offering panoramic views of the bay from its terrace, resident chef Christian Sinicropi blends a combination of Mediterranean styles with his own contemporary fusion inspiration.

One of the glitziest celebrity hotspots for Riviera splendor, the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc sits in a pine forest surrounded by nine acres of landscaped gardens. Renowned for its star-packed deck, the Belle Époque landmark is home to one of the finest restaurants on the coast, the Eden Roc Restaurant (see Dock & Dine page 34). For some of the best bouillabaisse on the Riviera, step ashore to the family-run Le Bacon. Dine @ The stately old-world palace of the Grand Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, run by the Four Seasons, has been tempting guests with its award-winning cuisine since 1908. Whether you choose to dine al fresco on the terrace at La Véranda, or opt for the Michelin-starred Le Cap (open for dinner only), you can expect fantastic Mediterranean cuisine conjured up by Michelin-star chef Yoric Tièche. For stunning views that pan from Cap Ferrat to Monaco, it is worth stepping ashore to the Michelin-starred restaurant at Cap Estel. Expect faultless French cuisine with a modern twist. For a more dramatic vista and elegant local cuisine, climb the cobblestone path to Château Eza, atop the medieval village of Eze. The dining terrace hangs over the cliff some 400 meters above sea level.

With equally appealing panoramic ocean views, the dining room of the two-Michelin-star La Chèvre d’Or is a gastronomic mecca with a reputation for both its spectacular setting and celebrated cuisine. “Lux-peditions” may not roll off the tip of your tongue, but the trend for ultimate travel experiences is on the rise. From diving the TITANIC to experiencing the silence of the desert, it doesn’t have to be all about the thread count in your sheets or the size of the pool; wealthy travelers these days are also looking for something different, a unique experience that allows them to pause, savor and really get under the skin of a destination. Ultimately, it’s also about space and being away from the crowds of tourists and the well-trodden path.

There’s something about exploring a new place that just can’t be beaten, and for those who want for nothing material, having a unique experience certainly carries more cachet. If this sounds like you and you dream of the road less traveled and the opportunity to relinquish all control, then trying something out of your comfort zone can actually be more relaxing than a beach vacation. “If real estate is location, location, location then luxury travel is experience, experience, experience," says Northrop & Johnson Senior Charter Broker Fiona Maureso.

And fortunately, Mother Earth is a clever lady — regardless of the month, some part of her is always enjoying the perfect season. No matter what time of year it happens to be, there is always an adventure to be had. These five adventures will propel you across the planet, and they may even give memories that will live with you forever. Now that is luxury.

PURE ADVENTURES If you are looking for extreme excursions into the most off-the-beaten-track destinations in the world, then speak to Matthew Robertson, founder of Momentum Adventure, the luxury adventure travel company. Experts in offering new experiences and fresh horizons, Matthew sent Gwyneth Paltrow to kayak with Komodo dragons in Indonesia, and a group of businessmen to the Borneo jungle for SAS survival training. But you don’t need to be a Bear Grylls-type to experience stimulation and excitement. Momentum Adventure specializes in offering unique luxury travel itineraries in remote destinations with style and panache.

After all, even when you are roughing it in the middle of nowhere, you still need your creature comforts. From abseiling down geothermal fissures to taking horses into the mountains and riding snowmobiles into glaciers, experiences that find their way into Momentum Adventure’s itineraries have the distinction of being both challenging and unique. “People want something special that isn’t accessible to everyone,” explains Matthew. “Every trip we take is bespoke, challenging, out of the box.”

But for experienced divers, their real claim to fame are the thousands of hammerhead sharks. “We have created an 11-day program which takes in the Costa Rica Thermal Dome, and any of the 20 dive spots surrounding Cocos Island,” says Matthew. “Back on land in Costa Rica, guests will have three days, accompanied by experienced guides, to explore the Corcovado National Park, one of the most biologically intense places on earth, where you can take night hikes.”

DIVE THE TITANIC Those wanting to take their ultimate travel experience to new depths can go on the ultimate diving experience to discover the wreck of RMS TITANIC. More than 100 years after the 20th century’s most famous maritime disaster, epic expeditions to the wreck will take place in July and August of this year. The eight-day journey, organized by travel specialist Blue Marble Private with submersible developer OceanGate, will take just nine adventurous guests at a time. Only a handful have dived down to the watery grave since the wreckage was found in 1985. Reaching depths of nearly 4,000 meters in a specially designed titanium and carbon fiber submersible alongside a crew of experts, the exploration will include three potential days of diving with dives lasting up to three hours. Dives will take in the deck, the bow, the bridge and the cavern where the grand staircase was once located. Mission Specialists, as the guests are called, assist the expedition team in the submersible and aboard the expedition yacht. During the voyage, specialists will be collecting scientific data to research and assess the decay of the ship, which is decaying due to extremophile bacteria (rust-eating bacteria) which could eat away the famous shipwreck within the next few decades. “This really is the opportunity of a lifetime,” says Blue Marble Private founder Elizabeth Ellis. “Far fewer people have visited the wreck of the TITANIC than the number who have been to space or summitted Mount Everest.” The cost of the expedition is the equivalent (after inflation) of the $4,350 First Class passage on the inaugural, and only, voyage that RMS TITANIC took from Southampton to New York. Need to know Prices for 2019 are $105,129 per person with a maximum of up to nine guests/adventurers.

Guests can also retrace the footsteps of an Inuit while hiking on Baffin Island, or travel

Rather than always trying to find the unknown, Brown + Hudson deliver an authentic slice of action, attracting high-spending clients from all over the world. Philippe has recently arranged trips taking clients to camp on the rim of an active volcano in Indonesia and hiking through ice caves of Afghanistan. Brown + Hudson have created a bespoke Solomon Islands "Luxpedition" for Navigator. The Bear Grylls-meets-Robinson Crusoe offering will appeal to history buffs in search of something a little more high-octane than the run-of-the-mill cultural hotspots around the world. Dropped by helicopter in the Solomon Islands, clients will be challenged to make their way to certain points, with a series of objects — chosen by themselves — to help guide them along the way. From learning to fish with an expert to discovering ancient artifacts with a tribal chief or diving World War II wrecks with a marine biologist and war historian, guests will meet experts in their field as they travel through the Solomon Islands. “Everyone you meet will share insights and clues to help you get to your next destination,” says Philippe. “You might learn to build a canoe or make panpipes to call a team member.” At the end of the unique adventure guests will be rewarded at a luxurious private camp with spa treatments and a fabulous dinner with the High Shark Priest. Other unique experiences created exclusively by Brown + Hudson could include a safari through Sri Lanka with the film crew from Planet Earth, with David Attenborough’s voiceover, or a recreation of a Lord of the Rings scene with the film crew and original prop/set in New Zealand. Need to know Solomon Islands Luxpedition is priced from $650,000 per person.

PILLOW TALK From world-class luxury hotels to trendy boutique properties, Tokyo has become a heaving metropolis of the fashionable and funky. With such major sporting events on the horizon the city has welcomed a raft of new openings alongside lavish refurbishments to some old favorites. Set in the exclusive Nihonbashi district near Ginza, the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo is a peaceful retreat away from the bustle of Shinjuku and Shibuya. Every one of the 179 rooms and suites boasts floor-to-ceiling windows affording spectacular views over Tokyo Skytree and Mount Fuji. The hotel is also known for its fine dining, with 12 restaurants, including three with Michelin stars. At night the neon blaze of Shinjuku comes alive. Here you will find the Park Hyatt Tokyo, of Lost in Translation fame, situated on the top 14 floors of the Shinjuku Park Tower. Nearly every room offers spectacular panoramic views of Tokyo, the Kanto plain and Mount Fuji. Located in the business district Ōtemachi, close to the Imperial Palace, the Aman Tokyo is true to Aman’s signature understated style. Minimalist interiors tap into Japan’s design heritage with its wood, paper and stone. The rooms are bright and spacious with expansive windows framing the city beyond. The spa is the property’s main draw. Spanning two serene floors, the sun-drenched enclave has a vast treatment menu, including the highly recommended Aman Tokyo Signature Journey. The spa also boasts a 100-foot indoor pool with views across the city.

EAT, DRINK & DANCE Tokyo has the most Michelin stars of any city in the world, but it’s not just the haute cuisine that will impress. The famous Toyosu Market (previously located at Tsukiji Market) supplies fresh fish to some of the best sushi restaurants in the world. Rise early and you will see seafood of all shapes and sizes being auctioned. If you can’t make the 5am start, then there are several sushi restaurants dotted around the market. Daiwa Sushi is the place to have breakfast, however it is so good that lines form outside starting at 5am. It is worth noting that an averagepriced sushi restaurant in Tokyo, with a highly skilled chef, can match a top-tier sushi restaurant in the US or Europe, so whatever gem you find it should not disappoint. The aforementioned Mandarin Oriental Tokyo features three Michelinstarred restaurants — Signature, Sense and Tapas Molecular Bar. Signature offers French fine dining, while Sense is the place to head for authentic Cantonese cuisine. The Tapas Molecular Bar, known for its Instagram-friendly theatrical dining scene, is an experience by itself, thanks to its innovative molecular cuisine. For a more relaxed affair, head to a local izakaya. These casual eating and drinking places serve fantastic dishes and are frequented by locals. Doma-doma is a very good chain of izakaya, one of which can be found in the Shibuya district. Tokyo also excels at all things nocturnal — as the sun sets the urban landscape lights up with neon signs. Trendy cocktail bars and backstreet drinking dens can be found on every corner. Of particular note is Baccarat’s B Bar. Located in the basement of the flagship store, every drink is served in individually selected glasses designed to suit the drink, but the recommended tipple is a killer martini. The city is one of Asia’s top nightclubbing destinations and for good reason. Maintaining Tokyo’s long and rich history of nightclubbing, the world’s biggest DJs perform on a weekly basis. 1OAK Tokyo in the Roppongi district is the club that received the most hype in 2018. With popular hip-hop artists and international DJs, this is the place to be and be seen — expect a New York vibe with celebrities and VIP areas. Other clubs of note include Alife, also in Roppongi and ATOM Tokyo.

DO & DISCOVER Stroll through the gardens of the Imperial Palace. When originally built, the castle was the largest in the world comprising 10 miles of grounds. Emperor Meiji downsized the palace in the late 19th century and his hidden palace cannot be visited, but the gardens, moats and turreted watchtowers are a stunning backdrop to any walk. A mega-metropolis of contradictions, despite Tokyo’s modernity, traditional culture is never far from sight. Look behind the gleaming façade of skyscrapers and you will find Tokyo’s cultural core. There is no one particular museum area as such, rather you will find there are many small museums and galleries spread throughout the city. If you are short on time, take a whistle-stop tour of Japanese culture at Ueno Park. Here you will find a host of museums, including the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of Nature and Science and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The Nezu Museum in the Aoyama district is a serene space where exhibitions of pre-modern Asian arts, including calligraphy, textiles, painting and tea ceremony tools are showcased. Take a stroll around the gardens surrounding the museum where carp-filled ponds are framed by crimson maples in the autumn and blooms in the spring.

For a taste of traditional Tokyo head to Asakusa, the old downtown district of the capital. The area centers on the capital’s oldest temple, Sensoji, a Buddhist temple founded in the ninth century, which enshrines a tiny gold image of the Buddhist goddess of mercy, Kannon; legend has it that the image was fished from the nearby Sumida River in AD628. Complete with vermilion gateways and a bustling market, the shrine is in the liveliest part of town. Tokyo is still the seat of an Emperor. As of press time, the current is Emperor Akihito, who acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne upon the death of his father, Emperor Shōwa, in 1989. After 30 years ruling, Akihito will abdicate at the end of April this year and his heir, Naruhito, is expected to succeed as Emperor to become the 126th Emperor of the world’s oldest monarchy. Visit the Meiji Shrine, the deified spirit of the Emperor Meiji, Akihito’s great grandfather. The shrine resides in a Shinto temple surrounded by a forest of 170,000 trees and is a peaceful haven away from the busy streets of Tokyo. In stark contrast, a short stroll takes you to one of the city’s most contemporary landmarks, Tokyo Skytree, which at more than 2,000 feet (634 meters) is the world’s tallest broadcast tower. Take the elevator to the viewing platform for epic vistas across Tokyo and beyond.

SEE & SHOP Tokyo has a shop for practically anything one could ever want to buy. From cutting-edge electronics to trendy fashion and traditional crafts, prepare yourself for a shopping spree. Most of the sightseeing areas double as shopping districts so you can kill two birds with one stone as you take in the city. Shinjuku is one of the largest shopping and entertainment districts. Centered around the Shinjuku Station, the shopping comprises of a handful of major department stores. Flagship boutiques and some of the largest electronic retailers in Japan can also be found down the side streets. For the Japanese youth trends head to Shibuya, another large shopping district with small boutiques, including high fashion and designer brands. For a more upscale shopping experience head to the treelined avenue of Omotesando in the Harajuku district. Over in the Ginza district, the new Ginza Six complex offers retail and culture combined. High-end flagship stores sit beside contemporary art installations. Nearly every leading Japanese and international brand name has a presence here, as well as major electronics retailers. Outside the city center the Nihonbashi district is home to Japan’s original department store, the Mitsukoshi Main Store, which originated in 1673. Step inside the regal entrance and head to the expansive fourth floor kimono section. The store’s huge food court is also worth visiting simply to marvel at the exquisite produce. The small side streets around Mitsukoshi are where you will find traditional artisan goods in ancient shops with hundreds of years of history. You can even try for yourself the techniques that are employed to create them. The best souvenir to take home is your name in calligraphy on Japanese paper that you have made yourself. Equally unique would be a pair of bespoke shoes that artisans handcraft in the small atelier Sonomitsu. A bespoke pair takes up to eight months to complete so when they are delivered home, they will bring happy memories.

UNWIND There is no better place to escape the bustling metropolis than in the serene surroundings of a Japanese garden. Spring is synonymous with sakura (cherry blossom), when the city is awash with hundreds of cherry blossom trees in full bloom. As a general rule, any time between March 20 and the first week of April is usually peak time for blossoms that dance on the breeze like snow. In Japanese culture, the cherry blossom is a symbol of transience and renewal; the ritual of appreciating and contemplating the blossom is known as “hanami. Join locals at the bridge in the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, which, along with Chidorigafuchi (the gardens surrounding the Imperial Palace), is one of the most picturesque spots in Tokyo during the cherry blossom-viewing season. The Japanese way to view the blossom is to make a packed lunch in a bento box for the family to share in the park under the sakura trees. For a taste of traditional Japanese serenity in the heart of the city venture on foot to The Koomon, a small family-run cultural institution. Here kimono-clad masters teach the art of the tea ceremony, calligraphy and kimono dressing. You can also find urban hot springs dotted around the city, including the Oedo Onsen Monogatari. The onsen (hot spring) complex has a dozen different types of steaming water baths in a setting inspired by old Tokyo with wooden buildings and traditional Japanese lanterns. And finally, if you really want to let it all out, head to a private karaoke booth and sing like no one is watching. No visit to Tokyo is complete without taking part in this national pastime. Karaoke venues with private rooms are found all over the city. Try Uta Hiroba in Shibuya. Spend a few days exploring the bright lights and intimate backstreets and you will be surprised what you find right on your doorstep.

Generational shifts in attitudes, preferences and behaviors are reshaping many aspects of life in the western world and the estate planning process is no exception, say wealth managers Northern Trust. Experts in providing wealth management and international trust solutions to individuals, families and institutions, Northern Trust has more than a century of knowledge in this area.

Their experts report an increase in “generational” wealth management, fueled in part by rising asset values and a desire from clients to make sure that their wealth is managed effectively and transferred on to the next generation intact. Most wealthy entrepreneurs want to make their money last not just for their own lives, but also for generations of their family to come, but there is a saying among wealth managers: “The first generation makes it, the second generation spends it, and the third generation loses it.”

Backing this up, one of the most frightening statistics facing any wealthy entrepreneur is that 70 percent of wealthy families lose their wealth by the second generation, and a stunning 90 percent by the third. To overcome these odds, a sustainable strategy needs to be put in place by the first generation to ensure that the wealth lasts for several generations.

Hugh Magill, Executive Vice President and Chief Fiduciary Officer at Northern Trust recognizes that wealth managers must also change the traditional approach to wealth management. “A good wealth manager needs to consider the modern family structure, increases in clients’ life expectancy, and the rise of second marriages, along with the increase in age-gaps for second marriages,” Hugh explains.

Multi-Generational Families The age span of families living and managing wealth together has been rising for many decades. Life expectancy in the West has risen by more than 30 years since 1900, while the number of adults who have remarried has also greatly increased since the 1960s. With large age gaps in second marriages becoming more common, it is not uncommon for a blended family of spouses and children to cover three or even four generations. It is not just multi-generational families that need to be considered. Estate planning has not caught up with the change in “traditional” family structures. Today’s families less frequently reflect the “traditional” combination of husband, wife and two children. Modern families, including blended families, cohabiting couples and others are increasingly as common as the ‘traditional’ family structure. Traditional estate planning approaches must be reevaluated to serve the needs of modern families. Generational Differences To better serve multiple generations, estate planning also needs to expand beyond financial considerations. The attitudes, behaviors and preferences of younger generations have changed significantly from those of the generations that shaped traditional estate planning models. While younger generations seem increasingly inclined to seek meaning and purpose behind their inheritances, traditional estate plans rarely provide such insight.

Those who created the wealth, including traditionalists born in the first half of the 20th century, and baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964, often have a different attitude toward wealth compared with the Generation X and Millennials who have become their inheritors. The traditionalists are work-centered while the younger generation is life-centered.

Trusts which will effectively bridge the gap between more traditional wealth creators and their younger beneficiaries should “speak” about the values underlying the creation of the wealth, aspirations for how it will contribute to beneficiaries’ well being, and equip trustees with greater discretion to adopt trusts’ management for the evolving needs of modern families. Redefining Family Wealth Historically, estate planning has been predominantly focused on the financial aspect of legacies. But when families think more holistically about their wealth, their plans for their financial wealth can become more closely aligned with their values and aspirations. Ultimately, it’s about finding a model that works for the entire family, bridging any differences and communicating wealth’s purpose for generations to come. Talk to an estate planning advisor who has experience in creating solutions for contemporary families, such as the experts at Northern Trust. northerntrust.com

Bermuda has long attracted visitors to its pink-sand beaches and perpetually sunny climate, making it the ideal island getaway year-round. Just a mere two-hour flight from the US east coast, and a seven-hour direct flight from the UK, the fishhook-shaped archipelago sits quietly in the middle of the Atlantic. Once a major trading hub, in the 1950s and 60s Bermuda transformed into a luxurious vacation spot for the East Coast elite. As developments waned in light of more lucrative industries, including insurance and banking, the Caribbean seemingly stole away the glitterati.

But they are now back, partly thanks to the high-profile America’s Cup, which took place along Bermuda’s shores in 2017. Since then the island has made a significant comeback, welcoming not just the American jet set, but travelers from all over the world to discover an island that offers a rich history, friendly locals and a stunning coastline. On the island’s west end, the most talked about new development is the Ritz-Carlton Reserve at Caroline Bay. The first ultra-luxury development with branded residences in Bermuda, the 182-acre site sits on a long, narrow point that separates the secluded Little Sound from the Great Sound.

Perfectly well placed for residents and guests to engage in all manner of water activities, from yachting to kayaking to paddle boarding, Caroline Bay was used as a home base by Artemis Racing, the Swedish America’s Cup team, for their training throughout the event. Formerly named Morgan’s Point, the reclaimed land has played an important role in Bermuda’s rich aviation history and was once used as a naval base.

Along with the luxury Ritz-Carlton Reserve boutique hotel and spa (opening 2020), restaurants, and a superyacht marina, the high-end branded properties include two, three and four-bedroom residences ranging from 2,000 to 3,200 square feet. Bedrooms feature terraces, while retractable glass walls overlook Little Sound and Great Sound, and plunge pools and outdoor entertaining areas allow for alfresco living throughout the year. Prices range from $3.2 million up to $5.8 million for the four-bedroom penthouses. Designed with a nod to British Colonial architecture, the residences are contemporary and sophisticated throughout, fully embracing Bermuda’s casually elegant lifestyle. Residents will enjoy special privileges at the Ritz-Carlton Reserve resort, including access to the fitness center, restaurants, bars, kids’ club and residents-only lounge. The Cove is the first phase of construction, consisting of five identical buildings, each offering seven units. The first building has been handed over to the developer, and the remaining are to be turned over sequentially as completed. Current plans call for 179 residential properties in total. BROKERAGE NEWS Northrop & Johnson continued its upward trajectory and exceptional growth in 2018, with a strong year of yacht sales, especially in the 24m+ category. In fact, N&J sold 50 yachts 24 meters and above, taking 9.5 percent of the market share and outselling all other brokerage houses around the world. The market overall saw a 10 percent reduction in sales due to low inventory, but with the order books of builders filling up and 38 yacht sales to date, 2019 looks promising. 525 yachts were sold in 2018 with a total asking price of $4.7 billion. The largest yacht sold was the 361-feet (110m) JUBILEE from Oceanco.
