A Musical in a comedy July 24 brings the Tony Award winning musical comedy production Drowsy Chaperone to the Sagebrush Theatre at 7:00pm. The original book was written by Bob Martin and Don McKellar and music and lyrics are by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and he puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and the Drowsy Chaperone begins, as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not so bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you’ve got a show soup dense with delicious delight! The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterfully meta musical. Sending up all the tropes that characterize the musical theatre genre, simply reading the dialogue alone inspires countless smiles and laughter. Tickets for the Drowsy Chaperone are for sale through the Kamloops Live! Box office. Please call 250-374-LIVE (5483) or visit kamloopslive. ca or in person at 1025 Lorne Street. Summer hours are noon to 6:00pm, Tuesday to Friday. ✚

Boldly Read What you Have Never Read Before Adult summer reading club enters dystopian other-worlds and the history of the future

T

his summer the Thompson-Nicola Regional District Library is offering its adult summer reading club again. The theme this year is science fiction, and “To Boldly Read What You Have Never Read Before.” Along with the reading program is a draw for a Kobo Aura high-definition e-reader that will be awarded to someone. The club begins on July 1

and continues until August 31. Participants get one entry for every book review they do, to a maximum of ten entries. If you are looking for a fiction novel to read check out Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, or The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle or even The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. More into non-fiction? You should give An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield or Apollo’s Arrow: The Science of Prediction and the Future of Everything by David Orrell. There are many sub-genres of sciencefiction novels; dystopian, paranormal, steampunk, apocalyptic, speculative, the list goes on and on. If you are interested in participating in the club, you can register at tnrdlib.ca/pages/mashups/adultread/. Once you have registered, you can begin writing and submitting reviews directly to the library catalogue by using the ‘Add a Review’ button of a book’s web page. You will be asked to write a creative headline and a short but sweet review. All postings are anonymous. For every review you submit, your name will be entered to win the Kobo e-reader. This program is open to adults age 18 and over who are members of the TNRD Library System. If you have any Hitch-hike the galaxy with some of these questions, please feel free to email the triumphs of the imagination.
