Farming friendship harvests community spirit Gardens of

T

he Kamloops Farmers’ Market is a time-honoured tradition in Kamloops, with roots that extend far back into the city’s history and seeded firmly in the harvest of friends we glean with each generation. Truly, the weekly Saturday markets at the 200 block of St. Paul Street and the 400 block of Victoria Street on Wednesdays have been observed every summer for 37 seasons to date. The market is a community that supports local agriculture and ensures healthy, available food can be produced in an environmentally and socially conscious way for future generations to cultivate with commonwealth. In 1914, Kamloops City Council set up a market area complete with wooden stalls on the current site of the Plaza Heritage Hotel at Fourth Avenue and Victoria Street. The sixteen original vendors were mostly sold out within the first hour. By offering a selection of fresh local food, quality entertainment and beautiful locally made items uniquely crafted by neighbours, it brought an accepted mutually inclusive vision of a family place with a festival atmosphere that is a gathering place for everyone to meet friends and exchange ideas, which continues to be an inspiration today. With support from City Council and the School Board, the first market was held in and for the City of Kamloops officially in 1978. Markets take place on Wednesday and Saturday and vendors offer a huge and growing variety of products, from bedding plants to fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, baking, eggs and dairy products. There are also specialty items such as locally made noodles, salsa,

condiments and even dog treats. The market welcomes home producers as well as farmers who want to become vendors. Community artisans, homebased businesses, and special music, events and activities can be found and the selection changes every time you attend. The Saturday market is open from 8:00 am until 12:30 pm from April 25 to October 31 and the Wednesday market goes from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm from May 6 to October 28 so there are many opportunities to check it

out when you are downtown. The Kamloops Farmers’ Market is a non-profit society, which supports and strives to strengthen the bonds of community by supporting the Kamloops Food Bank and providing bursaries to three students every year who are enrolled in horticulture or agriculture courses at TRU. Attend a market this summer and share the abundance of our beautiful surroundings and nurture a new and sustainable local way of shopping that brings us together where peace begins. ✚
