The gift of experience!

Did you know that there are Downtown Gift Certificates available to the public for purchase and are redeemable at all downtown merchants and service providers? Pick them up at the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association, #4-231 Victoria Street; Genesis Fashion, Golden Buddha, Healthylife Nutrition, Kamloops Florist or Spitfire Computers.

We all have someone in our lives that proves to be hard to buy a Christmas gift for every year. For me, it’s my dad, the man that has everything and now that my parents are downsizing, it’s become even worse! For people like my dad, I’m finding it’s easier (and less stressful) to buy gifts that offer an experience. These gifts can be movie theatre passes, gift certificates to a favourite restaurant, skydiving lessons or even making your own gift basket that can be filled with anything your hard to shop for person loves. Not only are these types of gifts a bit more thoughtful, you can also incorporate shopping locally. This not only gives you a chance to support local but also to offer a more unique gift. Happy shopping! Carrie Harman

The truth about Santa’s reindeer According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they

give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, every single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. We should have known... ONLY women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.

Typically I’m a bit of a Grinch during the holiday season so as an attempt to become more festive, I’ve started my own tradition of hosting an annual Ugly Sweater Party mid December. This is the fourth year now of getting together with friends to show off the ugliest sweaters we can find and it won’t be the last! And even as my children have grown older (one is already out of the house) we still enjoy our family Christmas traditions. On Christmas Eve, we open one little present and still put cookies and milk out for Santa and leave a

So much pun!

carrot for Rudolf. It’s silly, but it’s what we do! Christmas Day is spent either at my house or my parents, as we take turns cooking the turkey dinner. My sister usually rolls into town early afternoon and we spend the day snacking, drinking, laughing and playing Scrabble usually. It’s a good time! From my house to yours, may the joy of the holiday season bring you happiness all year round! Carrie Harman is the administrator at the Downtown and North Shore Echo.

Erin's Christmas traditions

I love the holiday season, so I try to spread out the Christmas cheer throughout December by making a family activity advent calendar. Instead of eating a chocolate a day we spend time together baking cookies, decorating the Christmas tree, watching a movie, playing in the snow or driving around town to see Christmas lights. On Christmas Eve we eat appetizers, nuts and eggnog throughout the day.

In the evening we open a few gifts because who can resist?! Christmas morning, we open stockings, gifts and call relatives to wish them a happy holiday. Playing boardgames is a must in our family as well as watching Christmas movies. Favourites include Love Actually, Scrooged, and The Santa Clause. Erin Johnson is the graphic designer at the Downtown and North Shore Echo.

Buy your own gift Last Christmas, grandpa was feeling his age and found that shopping for Christmas gifts had become too difficult. So he decided to send cheques to everyone instead. In each card he wrote, “Buy your own present!” and mailed them early. He enjoyed the usual flurry of family festivities and it was only after the holiday that he noticed that he had received very few cards in return. Puzzled over this, he went into his study, intending to write a couple of his relatives and ask what had happened. It was then, as he cleared off his cluttered desk that he got his answer. Under a stack of papers, he was horrified to find the gift cheques, which he had forgotten to enclose with the cards.
