Alexa’s bus in action Kamloops RCMP had the opportunity to deploy Alexa’s bus over the Easter long weekend in an operational capacity and for a public awareness and education session. The bus was utilized for roadblocks on the evening of Saturday, April 4 during which time the city Traffic Unit dealt with 11 drivers who were sanctioned for either drug or alcohol related offences. In addition to those drivers, police also intercepted two drivers for no insurance, one prohibited driver and made four marihuana drug seizures. There were plenty of positive comments received from the persons who were brought on board the bus to provide breath samples. Then on Sunday, April 5, the bus was part of the vintage car parade and was opened up

for the public to view in Riverside Park during the afternoon. Kamloops RCMP are looking

at bringing the bus back to town, with plans to visit local high schools prior to grad season, in

an effort to send a strong message about drinking and driving, all in memory of Alexa.

Record set straight on health-care transfers to the provinces Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, set the record straight in response to the recent protest regarding the health-care transfers to provinces. “Health transfers by the federal government to provinces and territories will reach $40 billion annually by the end of the decade,” said McLeod. “We remain committed to increasing health transfers year, after year, making this the highest recorded health transfer dollars in history.”

As announced in December 2011, total CHT cash levels are set in legislation to grow at six per cent until 2016-17. Starting in 2017-18, total CHT cash will grow in line with a threeyear moving average of nominal Gross Domestic Product, with funding guaranteed to increase by at least three per cent per year. “Further, we need to make sure the system is sustainable. That is why Minister Ambrose last June launched an Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation. The goal

is to identify innovations with the potential to reduce growth in health-care spending, while improving quality and accessibility of care. The panel is expected to file its report by June,” stated

McLeod. “I believe our Government is clearly on track to create a more innovative, effective, and financially sustainable health care system,” concluded McLeod.

Overlanders Bridge repairs Starting Monday, April 20, the Tranquille Road off ramp will be closed for work on the Fortune Drive overpass. There will also be a closure of west side curb lane to allow for sidewalk construction, but access from the north end will not be impeded (work is taking place on bridge deck only, not the on ramp). South end access will not be impeded.

Help make dreams come true by visiting Papa John’s The Sunshine Foundation of Canada (SFC) helps children with severe physical disabilities realize that nothing can stand in the way of a dream. By fulfilling their dreams, SFC helps Sunshine Kids build confidence in their ability to pursue other goals. Many of these courageous kids never get a break from the medical challenges and physical obstacles they face every day. But they are still children first — with hopes of happy times and exciting adventures. Since its inception in 1987, SFC has fulfilled dreams for more than 7,000 children across Canada. Picture an airplane with 70 kids heading on a one day whirlwind adventure to a Disney theme park - now that’s a dream come true! Since 1987, SFC has had eight sponsored DreamLifts depart from Kelowna, and 59 Sunshine DreamLifts in total lift from major

centres across Canada. That means that over 550 kids from the region have had the unique opportunity to experience a day of ‘yes’ – a day where they can enjoy just being a child and forget about ongoing medical appointments and other daily challenges. On April 29, five Papa John’s locations, including Kamloops, will be raising funds to support Sunshine Dreams. The in-store funds raised will sponsor the 2015 Sunshine DreamLift from Kelowna, as well support Sunshine Dreams to be fulfilled throughout the Okana-

gan Valley and across British Columbia. On Papa John’s Dreams for Kids Day 100 per cent of the proceeds at the participating locations will support Sunshine Dreams. Papa John’s staff is also generously donating their wages. Can’t make it out that day? Available now, interested supporters can buy a Papa John’s Dream Cookie for $1 to support DreamLift Kelowna, or throughout April supporters can make a $10 donation to sponsor a kilometer to Disney. Donations for kilometers can also be made at www.sunshine.ca.

If any of our North Shore Echo readers noticed, two weeks ago our paper came out on April Fool’s Day and we had a little fun! Our front page story featured strange happenings on Rabbit Island and our page five business story talked of a theme park coming to McArthur Island. Just to set the record straight, neither are true. Thank you to those who called in just to make sure!

Local funding for local priorities Kamloops and area will be receiving $1,429,423 as part of almost $40 million being invested into communities across BC to meet local needs including more policing, new equipment, increased community safety initiatives, infrastructure and service delivery priorities. Kamloops will receive $408,043 in traffic fine revenue and the Thompson-Nicola Regional District will receive a Regional District grant of $49,504. “These grants allow local governments to focus on the public safety projects that are most important to them,” KamloopsSouth Thompson MLA Todd Stone said. “They

also reflect one of our government’s top priorities - working toward safer communities.” “This funding helps make our communities safer while easing the burden on taxpayers,” KamloopsNorth Thompson MLA Terry Lake said. “These

grants provide a significant boost for our communities and improve their overall quality of life.” These are the first of two annual payments. A further payment of $75 million will be made in June 2015. Since 2009, the Small

Community, Regional District and Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Grants have provided more than $718 million in funding to support B.C. communities enabling them to invest money in projects that are identified as priorities at the local level.

Barb’s Book Sale is back! The semi-annual Barb’s Used Book and Music Sale is currently at the Sahali Mall until April 21, as a fundraiser for Kamloops Symphony. “Our last sale in November was a record breaker for us,” said Kathy Humphreys, general manager of Kamloops Symphony. “The use of the space at Sahali Mall played a big part in that.” Shoppers can find bargains in over 5,000 square feet of retail space. For over 20 years, Barb’s Used Book

and Music sale has been Kamloops Symphony’s largest fundraising event. They raised $35,000 this past fall. Kamloops Symphony volunteers work hard at each sale to sort books, so shopping is easier. Most items are only $2. A large number of high quality books, sheet music, DVDs, records and CDs continue to be donated for each sale. Kamloops Symphony volunteers will also be accepting donations at the mall during the sale.

Around every corner, volunteers help in health care Each day at facilities throughout Interior Health over 4,800 volunteers provide services to enhance the comfort of patients and residents. To recognize their vital contributions, Interior Health is joining Volunteer Canada to mark National Volunteer Week April 12 to 18. “Volunteers play a key role in our health care system,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “We pay tribute to the thousands of volunteers who graciously donate their time and energy to support patients, clients and residents in health care facilities throughout the region.” National Volunteer Week is Canada’s largest celebration of volunteers, volunteerism, and civic participation. It deserves to be recognized - across Canada 13.3 million volunteers contribute 2.1 billion total hours. “Our volunteers range from teens to seniors and each one plays an integral role in supporting the care we provide,” said Interior Health Board chair Erwin Malzer. “By volunteering in a health care setting these individuals are truly touching people’s lives.” Volunteers perform a wide variety of services in Interior Health’s hospitals and residential care facilities, to ensure patients and residents have the

comforts they need to enhance their quality of life. For example in hospitals, auxiliaries help fundraise for special patient care equipment through gift shops and craft sales, while youth volunteers visit with patients, assemble test kits for emergency patients to take home, and other tasks. Other volunteers provide information, answer questions and direct patients and their loved ones where they need to go. In residential facilities, volunteers visit with residents and help with recreation therapy such as entertainment, bingo, outings and events. Interior Health is continually recruiting these special individuals to fill important roles in hospitals and health centres, residential care facilities, in public health related roles and in communities. Visit www.interiorhealth.ca for volunteer opportunities in your area. Visit Volunteer Canada, the National voice for volunteerism, at www.nationalvolunteerweek. ca to learn more about the difference volunteers make each day, and how you can recognize their efforts during national Volunteer Week. There are online videos, posters, e-cards and other resources available to let volunteers know how much their work is appreciated.

City of Kamloops Overlanders Bridge Rehabilitation Project Phase 1 starts April 20th ... 

The Tranquille Road off ramp will be closed for approximately four weeks to allow for work on the Fortune Drive overpass. The west sidewalk and south bound curb lane of the bridge deck will be closed for a number of months while work is completed on the sidewalk. All other accesses on to and off the bridge deck will remain open until further notice.

At least two lanes of traffic on the bridge deck (one each direction) will be kept open at all times throughout the project.

The east side multi-use pathway will remain open during the project.

There's no way to sugar coat it ... Expect delays. While every attempt will be made to minimize the impact, delays and congestion throughout the project are inevitable and should be expected. The best way to decrease traffic congestion is to decrease traffic:

Plan ahead. Use alternate routes. Carpool, bike, walk or take transit. Watch for weekly updates at
