Kamloops is a beautiful blooming community with an abundance of sunshine and warm weather. Our grow season for plants, fruits, herbs and vegetables is substantial and creates a vast array of succulent greenery both edible and decorative. Our green thumb is so apparent that we will be hosting the 2015 Communities in Bloom symposium and awards for provincial, national and international communities competing this year! Kamloops has been such a consistent winner at both national and international levels that we have to wait for two years to compete again and will have to set our standards even higher when we are eligible to do so! Everyone can appreciate the lengths our community will go to in order to provide a new potential gardener with the knowledge and encouragement to grow their own garden delights. The Garden Gate Horticulture Program, presented by the Open Door Group is an innovative horticulture project that aims to promote healthy eating and active living for persons living with mental health issues. Garden Gate provides rehabilitation, life skills training and vocational training for participants while providing volunteer opportunities for members of the community. Healthy Living workshops include sessions on gardening,
nutrition, cooking, food preservation, building, crafts, mechanics, pre-employment skills and life skills. Programs take place in a greenhouse, vegetable garden and a kitchen classroom. Participants and volunteers increase their own food security by being able to take home organic produce in exchange for their help in the garden, while increasing the food security of the community by producing organic fruits and vegeta-
bles for local food charities. The Community Food Action Program (CFAP) began in April 2012 providing a year-round program composed of five major elements. These elements work in tandem to maximize efficiency of services and resources. The program provides poverty relief, educational, economical, nutritional, volunteer, food security and food sharing opportunities for all ages in the community.

The program is made possible by the financial support of the IHA Community Food Initiative, United Way, City of Kamloops and the BC Gaming Community Fund. Community benefits include food recovery as food is diverted from landfills, peer support, bear aware actions, increased food security, fresh and free produce to the impoverished and program volunteers, civic participation, - continued on page 2

New finance director hired
Yes we can!
Students of Westmount Elementary School took part in their CanWalk for Autism event on Thursday, April 23. This is the fifth consecutive year of the event, which is also part of the Canucks Autism Network. Learning resource teacher Mrs. Jennifer Boyle (left, back row) says the event is to help foster an environment of inclusion and acceptance within the school. Following an assembly with guest speakers in the gymnasium, students took to their walk along the dyke and back to the school.
The City of Kamloops announced the appointment of Kathy Humphrey to the position of finance director, starting June 1. Kathy is the current director of finance at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), a position she has held since 2008. Prior to TRU, she was employed with BC Lottery Corporation and KPMG. The hiring panel, which consisted of the City of Kamloops Directors team, was particularly impressed with Humphrey’s escalating level of responsibility at the organizations where she previously worked and her obvious interpersonal skills and energy levels, which bode well for the leadership of the City. David Trawin, City of Kamloops CAO, states, “We are very pleased that Kathy is joining our team. She brings new experiences and perspectives to build on the work we do. Our commitment to financial accountability and transparency will be a key responsibility and we are confident Kathy will lead us forward in these areas.”
BC Interior Community Foundation – Grant Application Deadline April 30 The BC Interior Community Foundation (BCICF), formerly the Kamloops Foundation, is currently accepting applications for its spring granting process. The Foundation provides grants to non-profit organizations, which have charitable status and serve the residents of the Thompson, Nicola and South Cariboo region. The Foundation supports community- based programs in the areas of arts/culture, health /welfare, seniors/heritage, youth/ education, children/families, and the environment/recreation. The goal of the Foundation is to ensure that local groups continue to have access to a growing pool of funds for their community projects and initiatives. To this end, the Foundation raises funds to support all charitable causes within our communities. These are held as endowment funds, which are invested in perpetuity with the earnings distributed annually to assist charitable organizations in their community work. This type of community investment turns donors into community builders. Over the years, grants from the BCICF have been awarded to organizations like Hope Air, who
provide free flights to get financially disadvantaged families to the healthcare they need; Adaptive Sports at Sun Peaks who purchased a glide sit/ski as a tool for individuals with mobility issues to be able to participate in ski programs; and the Nicola Valley Shelter and Support Society in Merritt to provide low barrier shelters for the homeless, when the health and safety of individuals is threatened during the cold weather months.
Grant Committee chairperson Cara Graden says, “The process of granting funds to important projects and programs in our community is challenging and rewarding. Last fall we were able to award close to $10,000 to our community, assisting ten organizations with a wide spectrum of projects, such as the Kamloops Cariboo Regional Immigrants Society for a cooking program for new Canadians who are experiencing isolation.”
Grant applications can be completed online and the deadline to apply is April 30. You can also support the BC Interior Community Foundation granting program by donating to the Smart and Caring Community fundraising initiative. Visit the BC Interior Community Foundation (formerly the Kamloops Foundation) website at http://www.bcinteriorcommunityfoundation.com or call 250434-6995 to find out more.
Horticulture Program promotes healthy eating and active living – continued from page 1 awareness of local policy initiatives, community building, and food sharing in a variety of outlets. The KFPC-CFAP partnership has been ongoing with some two dozen agencies, representing the non-profit, government, and private sectors. Partnerships help to promote, educate, and assist to facilitate coordination and distribution of information and produce from these four food security programs. During the month of May, Garden Gate will be hosting their
May Plant sale where customers have the opportunity to buy certified organic bedding plants grown by their own Garden Gate participants. Herbs, flowers and vegetables will be available at 915 Southhill Street from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm each Saturday in May, so mark down May 2, 9 and 16 as your days to purchase bedding plants for your house or yard and support this great program. The mission of the Kamloops Food Policy Council (KFPC) is to be an open, welcoming network that fosters and strengthens
the Kamloops region community food system by working collaboratively to influence policy, share knowledge, stimulate dialogue, catalyze action, and initiate project partnerships. Eligibility requirements for interested participants are that they have a mental health condition and there is no cost to join. To become a volunteer in the garden or other program related activities please call 250-554-9453 or email Garden Gate Open Door at leisure@opendoorgroup.org. Trina Budai

Shop, stay and play on the North Shore Well, we’ve put the first week of the Overlanders Bridge repairs behind us; only 28 more weeks to go! Personally, I’m looking forward to driving over an improved bridge without rattling my teeth! For our businesses it will mark the beginning of the end of a long, costly period of disruptions that started with a transport’s load striking the north end overpass four years ago. We’ve been working hard to position our business area to take advantage of the traffic delays through a marketing and information plan that encourages North Shore residents to re-discover their local businesses. If you’re on the North Shore we want you to “Shop, Stay, and Play” here! There is a lot happening on the North Shore. From events at McArthur Park, the new Jon Todd Community Centre, river walks, the Big
Little Science Centre, numerous dog friendly parks, there is so much to see and do here. We’re looking forward to our incredibly popular Overlanders Day summer family festival this August. Set in beautiful McDonald Park, there is everything and anything for families. There is free swimming at the open air pool, and a fun little water park to cool down and play in. Our Tastes of the North Shore food fair presents a delicious range of tastes from Spice of India to Reubin’s and Jam Can Café to name a few. Our Kids Zone has bouncy castles, dunk tank, face painting, and special games and guests to keep them occupied
and entertained. The North Shore Business Expo displays everything from radio-controlled cars to natural food stores. The entertainment we are planning for the Live Stage is going to be a lot of fun. Boost your power – get immunized! You don’t have to be a superhero to have the power to protect your community from harm. Making sure your immunizations are up to date helps protect you, your family and your community from serious vaccine preventable diseases like measles, mumps and whooping cough. “We’re fortunate in BC to have a comprehensive immunization program for children,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “These vaccines are free and easily available through public health clinics, doctors’ offices and school-based programs. By taking advantage of this program, parents are not only protecting their own children but others in the community as well.” Measles outbreaks this year in Disneyland and Ontario and last year’s large outbreak of 400 cases in the Fraser region of B.C. are reminders of why immunization is important. The more people who are immunized, the greater the
protection for those who can’t be immunized or have weakened immune systems like babies or people with certain health conditions. “An immunization rate of at least 90 per cent helps protect vulnerable people in the community. When the majority of people are vaccinated for a disease, it becomes harder for the disease to spread from person to person, says Dr. Althea Hayden, public health physician with Interior Health. “When immunization rates drop, diseases come back. This puts our most vulnerable citizens at risk.” In the Interior Health region, 71 per cent of children have completed their recommended immunizations by two years of age. This number has remained relatively stable over the last few years. The provincial rate is 68 per cent. April 25 to May 2 is National Immunization Awareness Week. Traveler numbers for March and year-to-date as compared to the same period in the previous year with a decrease of eight per cent in monthly travelers and a 2.2 per cent decrease in year-to-date travellers. Kamloops Airport continues to see a reduction in the number of resource workers traveling to Northern Alberta. This has been somewhat offset by the new Edmonton connection bringing new travelers who are leaving the eight hour drive behind them as they travel via WestJet Encore to Edmonton. There has also been some success this season in attracting the Edmonton ski market to the Kamloops area. The low Canadian dollar encourages Canadians to stay in Canada and it attracts more visitors from the United States as well. A bump in VFR aircraft for March was a result of large number of groups traveling to the North Thompson valley for spring skiing. This was combined with continuing growth in movements that are attributed to increased cargo and courier activity related to the increased number of local courier companies.

echo stargazer Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Confidence is attracting romantic overtures and your current “me first” attitude is actually working in your favour. Keep pushing the career as money is still flowing your way. If you keep the lines of communication open then your fortune can continue past this current cycle. A playful encounter at the gym signals your arrival. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Another week and the behind the scenes fight you’ve been having will finally be over. In the meantime don’t let it distract you from all of the love coming your way. Calming your busy mind attracts both peaceful souls and loving glances. Someone special has a crush on you. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) Recent encounters are helping to focus your big picture. There’s a new world waiting and you’d like to be a big part of it. Before you jump in however, you’re in a reflective and “letting go” cycle. If the behind the scenes affair is becoming too demanding, walk away. A new you is about to come alive. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) As much as you’d like to get out and play, the office is calling. The team is looking to you for leadership and you have the secrets to help everyone shine. Watch your sweet tooth or temptation will add extra miles to your workout. Love is waiting in a crowded room. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You’re philosophical, expansive and optimistic as a happier vision fills your eyes with how you’d finally like to be. You’re ready for more responsibility and prepared for the extra hours to attain this next goal. Get out and be seen. Love is looking for you at work. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Take some “me time” and let yourself rest and recharge. A visit to the day spa for an afternoon of nails and a massage will go a long way to bringing peace to your inner soul. The bigger picture is coming into focus and you can actually see love working out. By the weekend, you’ll be ready to rejoin the race. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Your heart is finally up for an adventure. Don’t go out alone if can avoid it. Teaming up is the fastest way to find some fun trouble and right now the team is more than willing to wing you. An inspiring stranger leads you out of darkness and into a brave new world. It’s time Scorpio. Go get ‘em. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) It looks like just another workweek with planning, chores and paying the bills. Not Sagittarius fun at all but your love life has kicked into high gear. You will be giving more of your time, energy, and money to your new affection but it’s love. And that’s about giving, receiving, and sharing. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Your health gets a boost from an early morning run along the river. This in turn sets off your frisky button. Others are seeing you as playful and fun but you’re pushing too hard and bumping others the wrong way. Hold back your creative expression and let love flow naturally. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) You’re currently seen as relationship material number one and both luck and love are on your side. This will lead to a financial windfall if you play the energy correctly. Friends will try to help but efforts might just as easily let you down. Keep going. It’s not always about business. You’re personal life needs attention as well. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) The home needs work that can no longer be avoided. A fresh coat of paint or a new move will help create the centering environment that you’ve been missing. Ask for top dollar if selling your house. You’ll be surprisingly aggressive in negotiations. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) A new project has your attention and you’re aggressively bringing it to life. Short trips, traffic, and networking fill the days but the dedication and efforts will be worth it. Money is arriving from the home so expect a surprise refund for the rent and utilities. Check your old clothes for forgotten treasures. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. For personal readings visit thesunnyside.net.
