The Kamloops Players are well on their way to an exciting and active fall season. Everyone in the community who would enjoy a laid back evening of sharing a potluck dinner and play reading are invited to meet at the Stage House Theatre located at 422 Tranquille Road, on Friday August 14 at 6:00 pm. The play being read is the 2015 Tony Award winner of five awards, including best play and best actor. “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night” is based on the international bestselling book written by Mark Haddon. You do not have to be a member of the Kamloops Players to attend, just bring a dish or food to share that begins with the letter “C” for “Curious.” Tea, coffee and water is provided, or you may bring your own beverage. The Kamloops Players are opening their 2015 and 2016 season with the classic play “Harvey.” It has been reported that James Stewart considered Elwood P. Dowd his most personally significant role. This story of a man and his 6’2” pooka is a charming, magical masterpiece of kindness and goodness that somehow never gets old and will make you laugh and at the same time show you the power of kindness. The Kamloops Players welcome new members who are interested in theatre, be it acting, directing, stage managing, set construction, costume designing, managing props and backstage. If you are interested in joining for the production of “Harvey” contact Sharon at 250-554-2388 or email to huuha@telus.net. Another opportunity to check out the Kamloops Players and find out about joining is at Overlanders Day at McDonald Park from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, August 15 where they will have a booth and are happy to answer any questions.

2016 Training House Project underway The Canadian Home Builder’s Association Central Interior (CHBA CI) and partner Thompson Rivers University (TRU) School of Trades and Technology are building the 2016 Training House Project at 703 Hayward Place in Westsyde. This unique project, now in its 26th year, is especially beneficial to the first year residential construction program students at
TRU as building experience. For the last 20 years the finished home has been sold to the Kamloops YMCA/ YWCA for their Dream Home Lottery fundraiser. Proceeds from the lottery have gone to specific community endeavors coordinated and run by the YMCA/ YWCA. The 2016 Training House will be a two-story three-bedroom home with a finished basement, ap-
proximately 3300 square feet in total. Due to the nature of the project, it features the latest innovative product and designs for those thinking of building a new home or even renovating extensively their current home. CHBA CI will profile the building steps on Facebook and Twitter, giving followers an unusual snapshot of the residential building process.

Aquatic Centre pipe dreams realized Repair of the water supply pipe was slightly delayed and prompted staff to reschedule the re-opening date of the Canada Games Aquatic Centre to Monday, August 10 at 6:00 am. That means combining the water supply pipe repair with the annual maintenance closure has allowed the Aquatic Centre to be open for the remainder of the summer. For updates go to kamloops.ca/swim.
Thank you to the Kamloops music scene Letter to the Editor; Last month I had the wonderful opportunity to sing with Beyond Brass and Cody Froese during Music In The Park as well as during Hijacked! Music In The Park featuring Leonard Cohen, Bruce Cockburn, and The Band. I had a fantastic time and am so thankful to the Beyond Brass family for making me feel so welcome as well as Alan Corbishley and BC Living Arts for including me in another of their prestigious events. I am honoured to have been included in both of these incredible events. Also, an extra special thank you to Henry Small for his hard work, Lee’s Music for their continued service, BCLC for their support of this event over the years, and the City of Kamloops. This continues to be a feather in the cap for Kamloops, so I am grateful to have been able to perform here this summer. For August, we have a few dates booked and are thrilled to perform at these various venues. We invite you to come and enjoy some evening entertainment. Please say hello after the show. OVERLANDERS
July was another successful month full of summer camps at the Big Little Science Centre (BLSC). Inquisitive young minds had a blast building working robotics and experiencing the wonderful science themes featured. August looks like a great month of science and study as well and BLSC has something new to offer.
Introducing a new hands-on item at the BLSC called a compound lever system. It allows a person to lift approximately 227 kilograms with little effort. Be sure to drop by the centre and try it out. Impress your friends with your lifting power. The BLSC Exploration Room is open for public drop in every Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00
am to 4:00 pm. Special activities and shows run on Saturdays at 655 Holt Street in Happyvale School. Upcoming at BLSC for the week of August 11 to 15 is a program called the Forces and Motion Show and starts at 11:00 am and at 1:30 pm. A force is a push or a pull! But what makes those forces and how? Join in and discover many of the key forces that influence our lives. Be prepared for some explosive movement and fun. The following week from August 18 to 22 they present the Explosive Geology Lab at 11:00

Dinosaur plumbing Because I couldn’t unplug the toilet with a plunger, I had to dismantle the entire fixture, no small feat for a non-plumber. Jammed inside the drain was a purple rubber dinosaur, which belonged to my five-year-old son. I painstakingly got all the toilet parts together again, the tank filled, and I flushed it. However, it didn’t work much better than before. As I pondered what to do next, my son walked into the bathroom. I pointed to the purple dinosaur I had just dislodged and told him that the toilet still wasn’t working. “Did you get the green one, too?” he asked.
Trouble at the border
A customs officer at the Mexican border noticed a man coming across one day on a bicycle with two small sacks tied to the handlebars. He naturally got suspicious and asked him to open the sacks, but when he did he found nothing but sand. This went on every day for the next month. Each time he’d stop the bicycle and open the sacks, and he’d find only sand. A few years later, he ran into the biker in a restaurant in Tijuana. After some small talk he said, “Come on. I know you were smuggling something all that time. I won’t tell. I’m just curious. What was it?” The other man said, “Bicycles.”

The deaf mafia bookkeeper A mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper of 20 years, Guido, has cheated him out of $10 million. Guido is deaf, which is why he got the job in the first place. The Godfather assumed that since Guido could not hear anything, he could never testify in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about his missing $10 million, he takes along his personal lawyer because he knows sign language. The Godfather tells the lawyer, “Ask him where the money is!” The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, “Where’s the money?” Guido signs back, “I don’t know what you are talking
about.” The lawyer tells the Godfather, “He says he doesn’t know what you are talking about.” The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido’s head and says, “Ask him again or I’ll kill him!” The lawyer signs to Guido, “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell him.” Guido trembles and signs
back, “OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno’s house.” The Godfather asks the lawyer, “What did he say?” The lawyer replies, “He says you don’t have the balls to pull the trigger.”
Do you know who I think I am?
A priest is walking down the street and runs into a homeless looking drunk outside a bar. The stumbling man claimed to be Jesus. The priest disagreed and tried to continue but the man insisted he was Jesus. Finally, the priest says, “Alright, if you are really Jesus, how can you prove it?” “Come with me,” the man said. The priest follows the man inside the bar and immediately the bartender says, “Jesus Christ, not you again.”
Strong words An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled, “Stop! Acts 2:38 (Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven.). The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, “Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture to you.” “Scripture?” replied the burglar. “She said she had an ax and two 38’s!”
Fishcake A man walks into a fish and chip shop with a fish under his arm. “Do you have any fishcakes?” he asks. “Yes, of course,” says the fish shop owner. “Great,” replies the man, nodding at the fish under his arm. “It’s his birthday.”

Customers Are
UPS insurance claim I called UPS about an insurance claim I had filed on a package. I knew the automated voice response system wouldn’t be able to handle this issue so I immediately said, “customer service.” It did a little beep-boop-bop computing noise, and then insisted that I first pick from its menu, none of which items bore any resemblance to insurance claims. I tried “track
a package.” It recited the status, followed by “Can I help you with anything else?” I said, more insistently, “customer service,” at which it complained that that was the most recent shipping information. Exasperated, but a bit curious, I said, “Stupid Machine!,” and after the little computing noise, it swiftly transferred me to customer service.

Brian walked into work and saw his coworker looking particularly sour. “Hey, what’s wrong buddy?” His friend looked up with a forlorn expression on his face. “You remember last month how my Great Aunt passed on and left me $2,000?” “Yes,” said Brian nodding his head. “And you remember how the month before that my Great Uncle passed on and left me $5000? “Uh huh,” said Brian again. “Well this month is almost over,” said the coworker with a wave of his hand, “And… nothing!”
