Rock on at the Gem and Mineral Show The first annual Kamloops Gem and Mineral Show is a unique event featuring over thirty of the finest gem, mineral and jewellery vendors from Canada and beyond. The event offers exquisite displays of unique gems, fine minerals, rare fossils, handmade jewellery, fancy beads and lapidary art. The three-day event will be held at the McArthur Island Sports Centre and runs through Friday, August 26 from 1:00 to 9:00 pm, Saturday, August 27 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and wraps up on Sunday, August 28 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Gem and Mineral Show is a travelling event that allows gem, mineral and jewellery enthusiasts to gather from all over Canada. This show has yearly dates in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, Saskatoon and these events are very popular, attracting 2000 to 5000 visitors over a weekend. Alex Kuznetsov, promoter and project manager, is hoping that this event will become an annual occurrence in Kamloops. Alex says the event promises to be a “very educational and unique event with knowledgeable and passionate vendors”. The show will feature museum quality collection minerals, fossils, hourly door prize draws and Lapidary technique demonstrations. This fascinating family event will be exciting for all ages.

Barbara Nederpel to run for NDP in Kamloops-North Local NDP constituency president Michael Crawford announced on Monday, August 22, that Barbara Nederpel will run as the party’s candidate in Kamloops-North Thompson in the provincial general election next May. “We are absolutely delighted that Barbara will serve as our candidate in the next election,” said Crawford. “She is a strong leader, an experienced organizer and a forceful advocate for justice and fairness.” The deadline for potential candidates to express interest passed with Nederpel as the only candidate approved by the party to run in Kamloops-North. “During her speech this morning to Kamloops media outlets, she demonstrated that she is determined to campaign tirelessly for equality, to advocate for justice without reservation and to represent all KamloopsNorth residents without exception,” said Crawford. HomeFree Council issues Homelessness Action Week 2016 Call for Proposals The HomeFree Council has announced that this year’s Homelessness Action Week will be held the week of October 10 to 14. HomeFree is seeking a project coordinator to organize and support communication of community events and activities throughout Homelessness Action Week. A special event, called Project Homeless Connect, will be held on October 13 at Spirit Square, at the corner of McKenzie Avenue and Yew Street on the North Shore. This event is designed to connect streetentrenched individuals to a range of health and support services, all in one place. The project coordinator will organize this event with input from people with lived experience of homelessness, with a goal to encourage transitioning from off the streets and into housing. Additionally, the project

coordinator will lead a Point-in-Time Count. The Count follows a prescribed approach established by the Government of Canada to ensure consistency across communities. The project coordinator will work with ASK Wellness and the A Way Home’s Youth Homelessness Count Committee to achieve a comprehensive count of

all forms of homelessness in Kamloops. The project coordinator is a contract position from approximately September 6 to approximately November 4. The position is funded by the Government of Canada’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy - a Federal program aimed at preventing and reducing homelessness by directly

funding projects and initiatives in Kamloops and in 60 other communities. For more details on the Call for Proposals for the position of project coordinator – Homelessness Action Week 2016, please visit www.kamloops.ca/ homefree/16-ProjectCoordinator-CFP.pdf. Submission deadline is 12:00 pm on Friday, August 26.

A friend of mine was a philosophy major during his first semester in college. One day in a seminar class, they spent a great deal of time debating whether the glass was half full or half empty. After the class, my friend was feeling pretty good about himself and what he was learning at university, so when he went home, he tried to continue the discussion with his family. With maximum drama, he took a 12-ounce glass from the cupboard and poured in six ounces of water, then took it into the dining room and placed it in the middle of the table. He proudly asked his family, “Can anyone tell me whether this glass is half full or half empty.” Without missing a beat, his grandmother replied, “Depends if you’re drinking or pouring.”

Chemistry class One day, the chemistry teacher asked his students, “What is the chemical formula for water?” Suzie immediately raised her hand. “Yes, Suzie, what’s the answer?” the teacher asked. Suzie answered proudly, “The chemical formula for water is ‘HIJKLMNO’!” Her teacher looked perplexed. He asked, “What are you talking about?” Suzie replied, “Yesterday you said the formula for water is H to O!”

Crash landing

Mom’s new apartment I was visiting my mother. My mother was giving me directions to her new apartment over the phone. Mother, “So it’s the fourth building on the left side of the block. Push the buzzer with your elbow and I’ll buzz you in. The stairs are on your left, go up to the third floor and my room is the second on the right. Ring the doorbell with your elbow and I’ll get up to unlock the door.” Me, “Mom, why am I pushing all of these buttons with my elbow?” Mom, “You’re not bringing me anything?”

Abe and Esther are flying to Australia for a two-week vacation to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Suddenly, over the public address system, the Captain announces: “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am afraid I have some very bad news. Our engines have ceased functioning and we will attempt an emergency landing. Luckily, I see an uncharted island below us and we should be able to land on the beach. However, the odds are that we may never be rescued and will have to live on the island for the rest of our lives!” Thanks to the skill of the flight crew, the plane lands safely on the island. An hour later Abe turns to his wife and asks, “Esther, did

we pay our $5,000 PBS pledge check yet?” “No, sweetheart”, she responds. Abe, still shaken from the crash landing, then asks, “Esther, did we pay our American Express card yet?” “Oh, no! I’m sorry. I forgot to send the check”, she says. “One last thing, Esther. Did you remember to send cheques for the Visa and MasterCard this month?”, he asks. “Oh, forgive me, Abie”, begged Esther, “I didn’t send that one, either.” Abe grabs her and gives her the biggest kiss in 40 years. Esther pulls away and asks him, “What was that for?” Abe answers, “They’ll find us!”

Dream job “Has your son decided what he wants to be when he grows up?” I asked my friend. “He wants to be a garbage man,” he replied. “That’s an unusual ambition to have at such a young age.” “Not really. He thinks that garbage men work only on Tuesday.”

North Shore echo

echo stargazer Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You’re focused on your career this week but both love and luck have different ideas. Personal attraction is at a yearly high so take advantage of the blessings. No, you’re not staring in the public eye but love is looking in your direction. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) With so many planets in your astro-sector of secrets and mysteries, it’s easy to see why that behind the scenes liaison is reaching critical heights. The only downside is, if you’re supposed to be together then why all the secrecy? Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)
The gang is calling with invitations you’d love to jump at but troubles with money hold you back from the fun. Although you’ll be cleaning up financial messes, you should get out and network. Love continues to arrive through your friends. Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) With so much luck arriving on the work front it’s easy to forget the little people who helped you ascend through the ranks. Take a break from the bustle and spend some time with someone you’ve always wanted to know better. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20)
Get ready to purge that last demon from your past that’s been hanging on like a thorn in your side. Astro-energies indicate that you’ve had enough, learned your lessons and you’re ready to move on. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) The final battle with your social group ends this week. As a stubborn sign it’s easy to brush off lessons as “their fault” but you let them in the door. Live your life lessons and let karma set you free. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) I know you’ve been working hard at your career but progress has been slow. One more fight then you’ll be free. Love on the other hand is so hot right now that everyone wants to be your friend. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20)
Get to the gym and work off some of that stress. Problems from a distance offer one last fight but you’re more than ready to win this final battle. Preparation begins a long awaited journey. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21)
This should be the most fun, playful and exciting time of the year for you. Get out and play! Love is attracting with a childlike attitude and a zest for the creative. If you smile then the world will smile back. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) Old friends return and it’s great to sense recent struggles being left in the past. Change however is a staple of life so if they’re stuck in the same dramas then you should stick to your plans and keep moving on. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22)
You’re our most quiet sign by nature but astro-energies are encouraging you to speak up and be heard so don’t lose yourself helping others. Freeing yourself from a daily drama gets messy. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) A red-hot financial year takes an even bigger step forward. Rather than counting your eggs, you should press your luck with more chickens. One last fight with a creative project and you’ll finally be free from the messy drama. Astro-week Sonnyscopes courtesy of Collin Sonny Rosati, Vancouver Astrologer, Hypnotist. Kids say the darndest things...

At an art gallery, a woman and her ten-year-old son were having a tough time choosing between two paintings. They finally chose and went with the autumn themed one. “I see you prefer an autumn scene as opposed to a floral one,” said the gallery owner, who happened to be nearby and witnessed the motherson interaction. “No,” said the boy. “This painting is wider, so it’ll cover the three holes I put in the wall.”
