Endless Summer at Thistle Farm The Kamloops Symphony’s second annual Endless Summer event is back! Revel in the pleasures of live chamber and jazz music on a summer evening at the farm while savouring locally grown food prepared by chef David Tombs of Terra Restaurant. “This particular time of year people love to get outdoors to hear live music – in the park, on the street – so the farm venue is a particularly unique opportunity to do this,” says Cvetozar Vutev, principle violinist with the Kamloops Symphony and one of the musicians performing at the event. “Last year we came as a little chamber orchestra of about 15 musicians. This time will be a little different.” On August 25 he and his violin will be a part of a group of five chamber musicians – including a cellist, a flutist, a clarinetist and a pianist – who will deliver a variety of styles, performing sometimes as a trio, others as a quartet or quintet, while guests dine outdoors at Thistle Farms. “This year, rather one large group, there will be several ensembles throughout the night,” explains Kaitlin Methot, administrative assistant at the Kamloops Symphony, adding that they’ve also recently added the Anita Eccleston Jazz Quartet to the programme.
A&W CHARITY PLUS GOLF TOURNAMENT
Guests enjoyed local food and chamber music at Thistle Farms during Endless summer in 2012.
Anita Eccleston is a local talent who has taken her voice and her trumpet to Vancouver where she is earning herself a name in the music community. She is bringing her band home with her to play the event. “I decided to perform at the event because Kathy asked me to. I love the orchestra and totally support their fundraising efforts,” says the former KSO musician. “It’s a chance for me to share my finest
skills for the audiences who saw me sitting in the back row of the orchestra for so many years, and I couldn’t be happier to be appearing in this new capacity.” But music is only half of what the Endless Summer event is all about. The culinary side of things promises to excite the senses, too. “It’s a very unique event. It’s a great contrast – the symphony at the farm – it creates a really romantic ambience,” says Kaitlin.
“This year we are really putting the focus on the local aspect of the event, the music, the food and the beverages.” 19 Hills Harper’sThursday, Trail andMay Summer wineries are two of the half dozen local beverage producers who will be there pairing their products with the evening’s meal. All of the fruits and vegetables served will come open for business 250.376.2411 straight from the farm, and while it doesn’t produce meat, Chef David Tombs makes a practice of sourcing everything he can from as close by as possible. “In addition to the vegetables we’ll be pulling right from the ground at the farm at the peak of the season we will be preparing spit-roasted prime rib and local lamb from Dominion Creek Ranch along with fish tacos made with sustainable Oceanwise seafood,” says Chef David, adding, “I’m not sure I want to give much more away. It’s nice to have an element of surprise.” The Endless Summer event will take place on August 25, and is a fundraiser for the Kamloops Symphony and its music education programs. Tickets are already available at the Kamloops Farmer’s Market from the Thistle Farm booth, Terra Restaurant at 326 Victoria Street, or the Kamloops Symphony office in Station Plaza. Rebecca Stewart

New Drive BC webcams
Mini Muskateer
Linnea from Prince George was called upon to be the fourth Muskateer this past weekend during the Laughing Stock Theatre’s performance of the Three Muskateers at Tranquille Farm Fresh.
The busy summer driving season is upon us, and motorists traveling through the North and South Thompson region will have two new DriveBC webcams to consult before making their journey. There will be one in Savona on Highway 1 at Holloway Drive near Savona, looking west and another in Little Fort on Highway 5 in Little Fort, at the Highway 5/Highway 24 junction, looking north. “These webcams provide motorists with the most up-todate information on traffic, weather and road conditions,” says Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake. “We want to ensure locals and visitors enjoy safe summertime travels through our beautiful region.”
Council remuneration Citizen Task Force hits the streets Seven members of the public are tasked with gathering public input on annual remuneration amounts for Mayor and Council and want to hear your thoughts. The Council Remuneration Citizen Task Force is taking this issue to the streets this August. “We wanted to make this process easy for residents,” commented Brant Hasanen, Task Force Chair. “Instead of residents attending a forum or input session, we’re bringing the Task Force to them. The Task Force will attend several community events over the next few weeks to engage with the public.” The Council Remuneration Task Force will provide a recommendation for City Council’s consideration regarding annual remuneration amounts for Mayor and Council in the fall of this year. The Task Force will be out, identified by a City of Kamloops badge, at Overlander Day at McDonald Park on August 17 from 10:00am to 5:00pm; at Music in the Park at Riverside Park on August 23 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm; at the Downtown Farmers Market on St. Paul Street on August 24 from 8:00am to noon; and
at Music in the Park at McDonald Park on August 30, 2013 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Can’t make it to any of the above events, but still want to have a say in the Council remuneration process? You may mail or drop off your written comments to City Hall at: 7 Victoria Street West, Kamloops, BC, V2C

The TNRD Library System is harmonizing its fine structure so that all patrons will now pay the same amount regardless of whether the item was borrowed by a child, an adult or a senior. The changes take effect on Monday, August 19. Previously, children paid a fine rate of five cents a day for the majority of late items and adults paid 10 cents. Now, all library patrons will pay 10 cents. Even with this change, the TNRD Library System has some of the lowest fine rates in British Columbia. “We feel that this change will be more equitable and more in keeping with how other libraries in BC charge for late fees, which is that
everyone pays the same,” said Marc Saunders, Director of Libraries for the TNRD. “Our late fees, which haven’t changed since the early 1970s, ensure that loaned items are brought back promptly so that others may enjoy them, too.” If library patrons currently have items on loan and those items are returned late, patrons will be charged at the rate in effect at the checkout date. A full schedule of fine rates, loan periods and maximum fines can be found at tnrdlib.ca/ finerate. If patrons have any questions about the fine rates for a particular item, they should ask a staff member at their local library.

Learn about being an organ donor at Kidney Walk On Sunday, August 25 Kamloops will be hosting The Kidney Foundation’s annual Kidney Walk at Riverside Park. The Kidney Walk supports individuals affected by kidney disease by raising awareness about the seriousness of this disease as well as funds to help provide critical programs and services. Kidney disease affects one in ten Canadians and currently has no cure. This leaves organ transplants as the only hope for those affected by the disease. Wendy Rockwell is this year’s regional honouree for The Kidney Walk in Kamloops. Wendy will promote organ donation at The Kidney Walk and through her story help put a face to this disease that is often under recognized and undetectable in its early stages. For Wendy, being a part of The Kidney Walk and supporting The Kidney Foundation is important. Her goal is to get people to come out to the walk and learn more about organ donation. She explains, “Getting the word out about registering to be an organ donor is important. It is easy and anybody and everybody should do it!” Wendy has family members affect-

ed by kidney disease. Both her sisterin-law and her cousin’s husband have kidney problems. Wendy donated her kidney to her cousin’s husband in March of 2013. “For me it was an easy decision, and it felt really good that I could do something to help my family member out”, says Wendy about her decision to donate her kidney. The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch is a non-profit, grassroots, volunteer-based organization that
helps improve the lives of all people affected by kidney disease. Funds raised provide education and support; increased public awareness of kidney health and organ donation as well as ongoing research that provides hope and an enhanced quality of life for kidney patients. A summer of reading deserves a party The Kamloops libraries are celebrating a summer of reading with a party on Saturday, August 24 and you and your kids are invited! Many kids spend their summers enrolled in the Summer Reading Program, and the wrap-up party, being held from 10:00am to 3:00pm is the library’s way of recognizing their commitment to reading as many books as they can. “It’s a big congratulations to the kids for reading all summer,” says Andy Finnen, head of Children’s Services at the North Kamloops Library. There will be games and crafts and a big cupcake cake, and the kids who have participated in the program will receive their medals and certificates. “It’s a great atmosphere – the kids are so excited about their accomplishments,” says Andy. “Summer Reading Club is a smashing success this year. We spent a lot of
time promoting it before the program actually started. The principals, teachers and teacher librarians were on board from the start. By the time our student went to the schools to tell the children about the theme and activities for the summer, the children had already heard lots from their schools. So I am really proud of our community and the efforts everyone has made to keep the children reading at a high level over summer to prevent that summer slide that affects so many children when they go back to school if they haven’t read.” Both Kamloops library locations will be celebrating on the same day at the same times. They have also set a date for registration for their fall programs, such as the popular Mother Goose, Rock-A-Bye Baby and the new Read, Sing, Play among others. Register in person starting on Wednesday,
September 11 at 10:00am. The classes fill quickly, so arrive early to ensure a spot. For more information on all children’s library events contact Andy at 250.554.1124.
This rocket was created to represent the theme books for Summer Reading Club over the summer. The theme this year was Up, Up and Away.

Earlier this year Houle Electric stopped to celebrate at all seven of its branch offices across British Columbia. They were rejoicing the fact that they’d joined the ranks as one of Canada’s “50 Best Managed Companies.” The electrical contracting company, well known for large high profile and award winning building projects such as the Lions Gate Bridge upgrade and the construction of Abbotsford Regional Hospital, held a festive breakfast that preceded a closed circuit TV broadcast address by Houle president, Robert Lashin from the head office in Burnaby. ”We are always striving to be the best,” commented Lashin to all the staff with him in the room as well as those watching from the other branches. “And here is a shining example of how that effort has paid off!” Houle joined 49 other companies across Canada that were announced as winners of this coveted title in the National Post newspaper. This year was Houle’s first ever application to Canada’s Best Managed Companies, a circumstance that in many cases does not normally result in winning, so the senior management team from Houle was very impressed by the outcome and proud of their company and its many dedicated staff members. The “Best Managed” program has several unique requirements that applicants must meet in order to qualify. The company must be

Doctor’s say, he will always limp AABG 1.8 august fpages 2013.indd 1
When our lawn mower broke and wouldn’t run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer… Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall

Did You Know... Under the Motor Vehicle Act, cyclists are vehicle operators and have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. When motorists and cyclists follow the same rules, the roads become safer and more predictable for everyone. For safety tips, visit http://www.kamloops.ca/transportation/gg-sharetheroad.shtml.
What do these signs and markings mean? Bike Route ~ Directional signage (wayfinding) indicating that the road or designated facility is part of a bicycle route system. On-Street Bike Lane ~ Dedicated lane on the roadway for cyclists where motorists are not allowed to park, stop or drive on.
Off Street Shared Pathway (Multi-Use Path) ~ Shared pathway for cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists must always yield right-of-way to pedestrians.
Share The Road ~ On
designated bike routes where the roadway is shared by motorists and cyclists. Often used at the end of a separated bicycle lane to indicate that the lane is ending. Motorists are to provide safe space for cyclists to ride on the road and can only overtake the cyclist when it is safe to do so.
Sharrows ~ Typically placed along wide roadways where there is enough space for cyclists and motorists to share the road. The sharrows indicate where cyclists should position themselves on the roadway. Motorists are to provide safe space for cyclists to ride on the road and can only overtake the cyclist when it is safe to do so.

Your Horoscope
LEO (July 23-Aug 22) You must strive to get the most important projects completed properly, rather than doling everything in a half baked way. Your passionate nature may make you jealous if your mate has been too busy to take care of your needs.. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) You have to let go of your past if you wish to get out of any sentimental mood that might be hanging over your head. You can expect changes at your work place. You should be able to get a lot done. Be honest with yourself before getting involved with someone who is likely to lead you on. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) You can’t help everyone. Be discreet about any information you uncover. Self-improvement projects will payoff in more ways than one. You are best not to say too much to colleagues. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Be prepared to make changes to your personal documents. You’ll be tempted to spend extravagantly this week. Your energy will be high; however, if not channeled suitably, temper tantrums may erupt. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Your health may suffer if you don’t control your present situation. Your lover will be annoyed with your participation. Have some fun, but draw the line if someone tries to fast talk their way into your heart. You will be subject to pushy individuals if you get involved in uncertain organizations. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) The emotional state of peers may cause a problem for you. Curl up with a good book or go for a drive in the country. Losses are likely if you have left your financial affairs in other people’s hands. You will enjoy interaction with others this week. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Expect to pay more than anticipated for entertainment or other purchases. Concentrate on work or make changes to yourself. You may be confused emotionally. You will be able to find the perfect outfit, and the greatest new accessory for your house. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Communicate with relatives who may need advice in order to find solutions to their existing problems. Renovations to your domestic scene will pay high rewards. Develop some of your good ideas. Don’t start any arguments unless you’re prepared to accept irrevocable results. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) You will be attracted to unusual forms of entertainment and foreign cultures. Problems on the home front might be a little disconcerting. Think twice before you pursue an unrealistic endeavor. You may find it difficult to communicate with someone at work. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Someone may be trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Your honesty will not only win you points but also respect. You can come up with future trends in creative fields. You are best to do something energetic with friends instead. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Your intellectual wit will bring greater popularity with your peers. You probably aren’t getting straight answers to your questions. It will be all around you. You may have to take a short trip to visit someone who hasn’t been well. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Think twice before you say something you might regret later. Entertainment should include sports events or physical activities. Your ability to get the job done will result in added responsibility and possible promotion. You will back yourself into a corner if you are baited and your stubbornness will only make matters worse. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Michael Thiessen.
