Be a Secret Agent of Compassion The Charter for Compassion may just be the best idea humanity has ever had. It is a document that transcends religious, ideological, and national differences. Supported by leading thinkers from many traditions, The Charter for Compassion is a cooperative effort to restore not only compassionate thinking but, more importantly, compassionate action to the centre of religious, moral and political life. Compassion is the principled determination to put oneself in the shoes of the other and lies at the heart of all religious and ethical systems.
“
Keep feeling the need for being first. But I want you to be first in love. I want you to be first in moral excellence. I want you to be first in generosity. – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

ing donors and supporters who purchased T-shirts during the ‘Got Gold?’ campaign last spring, will help young university or college students cover a portion of their education costs during the 2014/2015 school year. “We were absolutely thrilled, both with the response to the Got Gold? T-Shirt campaign as well as the sheer volume of applications for the scholarships,” said CCA chief executive officer Greg Stremlaw. “As we continue to build our scholarship program, we’re looking forward to being able to help even more young athletes pursue their academic and curling goal.”
Nearly 100 applications were received from across the country. Corryn Brown was the lucky recipient from Kamloops to receive one of the scholarships awarded. The scholarships were decided by a panel, whom looked at both academic and curling achievements, while showing a commitment to building the sport of curling through coaching/instructing and/or volunteer activities. Applicants needed to be enrolled fulltime for at least two semesters at a Canadian university or college, in addition to being registered to compete for Canadian Team Ranking System points during the 2014/15 curling season.
The For the Love of Curling philanthropic program was introduced during the 2013/14 season to help junior curling and to support curling centres in Canada, and the scholarships were an example of what can be done going forward, said Rachael Wilson, director, Fund Development for the CCA. “It was gratifying to see the support of curling fans across Canada translate directly into helping our young athletes move forward in curling and in the classroom,” said Rachel Wilson. “It’s what For the Love of Curling is all about, and we know we can continue to build on this early success.”
Memorial Plaque unveiling ceremony This year marks the 100th anniversary of Canada’s first national internment operations of 1914 to 1920 and the War Measures Act. Thousands of men, women and children were branded as “enemy aliens” and interned in 24 camps established across Canada. Ukrainians, among other European nationalities, were those who were interned. On Friday, August 22, the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation (UCCLF) unveiled 100 plaques in commemoration of these events. All 100 plaques were scheduled to be unveiled at 11:00 am in Ukrainian, Croatian, Serbian, German, and Hungarian churches and cultural centres, as well as in local and regional museums and other public venues, creating a “wave” of unveilings, moving from east to west, from coast to coast.
MP Cathy McLeod joined the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in unveiling the plaque in Kamloops.

The Northshore Health Science Centre at 370 Tranquille Road is home to Carmel Place, affordable housing for 55+, Manshadi Pharmacy and Norkam Healthcare Centre. There was a free BBQ to celebrate Norkam Healthcare Centre’s first anniversary on August 15. Pictured here (L-R) is Cheryl Snyder (head nurse), Patti Aldrich (clinic manager), Missagh Manshadi (pharmacy owner) and Susan Vlahos (doctor/owner).

ASK Amazing Race promotes collaborative spirit The deadline is approaching and if you have not heard yet, ASK Wellness is looking forward to another run of the ASK Amazing Race in September! The Race is open to anyone in the community to allow for collaboration amongst agencies and businesses within Kamloops. The theme will stay the same in that it will allow for those to interact, meet and greet the different agencies that assist those on the street to gain a better understanding as to what a low income or homeless person struggles with on a daily basis. This is a great way to strengthen your own team. This year’s race will run on Friday,
September 19 and it is free to enter a team of five people or less, with a lunch provided. The deadline is August 29. For more information contact Cheryl at 778-220-8900. The advocacy and support that Kamloops agencies provide to marginalized members of our community is an invaluable service. ASK Wellness believes fostering collaboration between different community resources will improve the assistance community members receive During the race, participants visit agencies across town and learn about the programs they offer and the services they provide. The race aims to foster teamwork and com-
munity collaboration in a fun and inclusive environment. ASK Wellness hopes that the collaborative spirit that the race promotes extends into our work in the community. The ASK Amazing Race offers an opportunity for agencies to interact in a light-hearted setting and to build interpersonal connections between workers. In addition, the ASK Amazing Race highlights some of the amazing work being done in our community through challenges and activities that bring to light some of the barriers our clients face. ASK looks forward to seeing as many teams as possible this Fall on Friday, September 19.
Anniversary celebrates with donation to YMCA/YWCA The Kamloops YMCA/YWCA received a $10,000 donation from the Gore Mutual Foundation, in celebration of Gore Mutual Insurance Company’s 175th anniversary. The gift will allow YMCA Camp Deka to add ten Paddleboards to their fleet of boats. This will open up a whole new realm of possibility for programs in the 2015 summer season. Kids will be able to explore the shores of camp from a different point of view while also learning a new skill that is rapidly gaining popularity as a summer sport! “The significance of this donation goes well beyond
boats,” says Monica van der Meulen, general manager of Child, Youth and Family Services. “This generous gift from Gore Mutual Foundation will allow YMCA Camp Deka to build our waterfront program, an integral part of the camp experience. The 250 children who attend this camp annually will benefit from enhanced boating programs.” This donation to the Kamloops YMCA/YWCA is part of Gore Mutual Foundation’s larger donation to 17 YMCA overnight camps in British Columbia and Ontario. The total $175,000 donation will go towards the purchase or repair of 175 boats.

Unlock support and hope with your locks Is it time for a haircut? A Cut Above Family Hair Care at 5 - 177 Tranquille Road is looking for family, friends and customers to assist a family through a difficult time. Local stylist Alanna Smith is the co-owner of A Cut Above. Her grandson Hunter was unfortunately diagnosed with Craniosynostosis shortly after being welcomed to the world on July 9. There are seven bones that make up the skull of a newborn baby. These bones are separated by spaces called sutures. Craniosynostosis is the term used to describe the premature fusion (closing) of one or more of these sutures. It happens one in about 2,500 births. In Hunter’s case every bone except one has fused. Shortly after his birth, Hunter’s mom Amanda Smith noticed ridges had developed on the back of Hunter’s neck. She soon learned of the severity of her son’s condition and the urgent surgery required to help to remodel the bones of his skull and alleviate pressure from his growing brain. “Typically they wait until after three months to operate on a baby,” says Alanna. Some of Hunter’s family, as well as Red Hat Society members, will have hot dogs, drinks and baked goods for sale. There will also be face painting for kids of all ages. It has been an emotional summer for the family and Alanna says she has a special tribute planned for the event. “Everyone that attends will be given a helium balloon. We are going to release them together as a personal expression of hope and a higher power,” shares a tearful Alanna. Be sure to get the word out and drop by Alanna’s salon to support Hunter by donating and/or getting your haircut. Donate what you can. SURPRISE!
The leader of the vegetarian society just couldn’t control himself anymore. He just needed to try some pork, just to see what it tasted like. So one summer day he told his members he was going on a vacation. He packed out of town and headed to the nearest restaurant. After sitting down, he ordered a roasted pig and impatiently waited for his delicacy. After just a few minutes, he heard someone call his name and to his great chagrin he saw one of his fellow members walking towards him. Just at that same moment, the waiter walked over, with a huge platter, holding a full roasted pig with an apple in its mouth. “Isn’t that something,” says the leader after only a moment pause, “All I do is order an apple and look what it comes with!”

Ringing the doorbell Everyone loved Priest John. He was a happy, jolly fellow always willing to help or lend a hand. One time John was walking down the street humming a tune when he saw a little boy trying to reach the doorbell of a nearby house. “Hey there, sonny,” said John “let me help you out.” and with that John reached out and pressed the bell. “Anything else I can do for you,” asked John with a smile. “Yes,” said the boy. “Run! We’ve only got a few seconds before they come!”

Jack strode into ‘John’s Stable’ looking to buy a horse. “Listen here” said John, “I’ve got just the horse your looking for, the only thing is he was trained by an interesting fellow. He doesn’t go and stop the usual way. The way to get him to stop is to scream, ‘Hey, hey!’ The way to get him to go is to scream, ‘Thank God’.” Jim nodded his head, “Fine with me, can I take him for a test run?” Jim was having the time of his life. This horse sure could run he thought to himself. Jim was speeding down the dirt road when he suddenly saw a cliff up ahead. “Stop!” screamed Jim, but the horse kept on going. No matter how much he tried he could not remember the words to get it to stop. “Yo, yo!” screamed Jim but the horse just kept on speeding ahead. It was five feet from the cliff when Jim suddenly remembered. “Hey, hey!” Jim screamed. The horse skidded to a halt just one inch from the cliff. Jim could not believe his good fortune; he looked up to the sky, raised his hands in the air, breathed a deep sigh of relief and said with conviction, “Thank God.” Call The Echo To Book This Or Any Other Space

ECHO STARGAZER
VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Experiences may seem surreal on some level. You may be doing something you never thought you would do. Hold onto the awareness that you may be misinterpreting what happens. It’s also possible that you are unconsciously donning a mask to suit the circumstances. If you feel disconnected, you must go back to your heart center. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) You can now see the result of financial decisions made last year. Hopefully you have chosen well and can now enjoy the ripe fruits of your choices. In the world of relationships, it appears that you need to have a genuine discussion over shared resources and their management. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 –Nov. 22) This summer marks a time in which you’re likely to let a bad relationship go, rather than carrying all the energy around by yourself. You are much stronger than you may believe right now, after a long bout with Saturn. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) Between now and October life will work more smoothly if you let yourself be led by the “signs,” circumstances, and people around you. It’s not a time to attack in anger or initiate new ideas, but to respond to what comes your way. If someone takes a swing at you, defend yourself as necessary.. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22.- Jan. 20) Circumstances involving love life and money may feel a bit tight. You may experience an emotional droop. This is a temporary mood so don’t take it seriously. Focus instead on the present and don’t project way down the track. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) For any number of reasons, circumstances may leave you out of the social loop. Astrologically this is a time for selfreflection and not self-condemnation. Having a quiet week is appropriate at this time. Don’t turn this into a negative belief about yourself. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) There are vampires loose in the world and the Piscean Fish tends to attract them. If you have matured a bit, you probably have begun to smell them when they cross your radar. Take care of yourself first when someone approaches you with a sad story. ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) The fresh start in April/May of 2013 may have been financial, relationship or a renewed recognition of self-worth. Now you see the outcome, for good or ill. This is the time to decide if you will continue to sustain that beginning or to let it go. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) The conjunction of 2013 occurred in your first solar house and it concerns yourself and your relationships. Who do you want to become? You are beginning the last leg of an arduous journey. Anyone who takes energy from you without return may be toxic. Think carefully. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) Your recent focus matters of home, hearth and family is drawing to a close and something in these areas is being completed now. Then you will be shifting attention to children, recreation, personal creativity and romance. Take your pick. They are all fun. CANCER (June 22-July 22) People from your past may resurface this week. If not specific people, then the week’s experiences are somehow familiar and reminiscent of the past. The probability of whether you want to attend to these developments is 50/50. LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Take a look at reality. The facts are being exposed related to a financial or sexual matter. Maybe you’re just becoming aware of the truth concerning your partner’s resources. Or possibly the culprit is yourself as you’ve avoided clear knowledge of your financial picture. Horoscopes courtesy of astrologer Vivian Carol.
