Big Little Science Centre on the move! For nearly a decade the Big Little Science Centre has been a journey of fun scientific discovery for kids of all ages here in the ThompsonOkanagan region. Started in 2000 by Gordon Gore, a retired Westsyde High School Science teacher, the Big Little Science Centre has grown from modest beginnings occupying one room of David Thompson Elementary School through a series of expansions and now is embarking on another giant step. After calling the back end of the Bert Edwards Science & Technology School home for nearly five years, the Science Centre is in the midst of packing out and moving up to its new home at the old George Hilliard Elementary School on Holt Street. “I first brought my grandchildren to an open house done by Gordon Gore at David Thompson,” explained Dave McKinnon, president of the Big Little Science Centre and retired chemistry professor at the University of Manitoba. “He just did such a fantastic job that I volunteered my services. It is just a wonderful place. Everyone including Gordon contributes an awful lot.” “We are very excited about the move,” explains Susan Hammond, assistant operator of the Big Little Science Centre. “We have

enjoyed being part of the Bert Edwards School. They have been amazing hosts to us but as the school is increasing in enrollment they need more space. We have been working with the School District to find a new home and now we are officially moving into George Hilliard. The BIG Little Science Centre and School District 73 have entered into an exchange of services agreement which covers the expenses of all district teachers for visits to the BIG Little Science Centre, allowing all District 73 classes to visit with no extra fees. We are going to have two times the space and now will be able to have three full hands-on rooms, more programs and expanded hours.” The Big Little Science Centre is unlike anything else in the area and like all good ideas was created out of passion, need and love. “Our founder Gordon is a wellawarded scientist and still very involved with the Centre,” finishes Susan. “My favourite quote from him is that science is a verb – it’s about doing instead of sitting there and learning.” When Gordon Gore retired he wondered what he was going to do with all the stuff he had accumulated. He may have been retired but was still a busy man, – continued on page 2

Rothenburger awarded

The Jack Webster Foundation has announced that Mel Rothenburger, editor of the Kamloops Daily News, will receive the 2011 Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award on October 24 at the 25th Annual Jack Webster Awards Dinner. The Jack Webster Foundation, founded in memory of the late iconic BC reporter, names its Lifetime Achievement Award after Bruce Hutchison, the legendary Vancouver Sun journalist who started out at the Victoria Times in 1917 and went on to become the confidant of prime ministers. Mel Rothenburger has served his community for more than 40 years at the Kamloops Daily News, variously and often concurrently as owner, editor, reporter, columnist, Webmaster and blogger. “Throughout his remarkable career, Mel Rothenburger has mentored scores of BC journalists, produced scores of scoops, and scored a unique position of

leadership in his community,” said Don Babick, co-chair of the Jack Webster Foundation. Mel Rothenburger’s arrival as editor of the Kamloops Daily News’ predecessor in 1970 began an incredibly deep relationship with Kamloops that has witnessed his huge measure of journalistic and civic contributions. A lifelong passion for civic affairs – he’d been a chair of the Kamloops school board– led to his successful bid for the mayor’s chair from 1999-2005. Now he’s back in the editor’s chair. A mentor to countless young reporters throughout his career, Rothenburger has taught journalism at Cariboo College and was later instrumental in helping to establish the journalism program at Thompson Rivers University. “Being honoured in the name of fellow journalists the calibre of Webster and Hutchison is both deeply satisfying and humbling,” Rothenburger said.

The SPCA held a hotdog fundraiser outside the store of their local sponsor London Drugs for the Scotiabank SPCA Paws for a Cause walk to be held September 11. That’s David Dahl in back manning the barbeque. He’s the SPCA volunteer handyman extraordinaire and a member of the Community Council. “I can’t volunteer with the animals, because I’d want to take them all home,” says Dave.

– continued from page 1 receiving phone calls from all over the district asking him to come out, bring some of his gear and enlighten people with his science. After a year or so of doing that he finally decided to get some roots and that is when he set up the room at David Thompson and the Big Little Science Centre Society. Now people and groups could come to him instead of the opposite. The rest of the story is history; the love, need and want for science in people’s lives was and still is there and Gordon Gore and his work will live on in Kamloops for many, many years to come. Chances are you and your kids

have spent many a day at the little science centre that could and that is all thanks to Gordon Gore and the love he has for his craft and sharing his knowledge with others. Thanks to him I bet we may just have a few little great scientists born out of the ThompsonNicola region. “We have people who come and visit us from all over the world,” continues Susan. “We are looking forward to the expansion and looking forward to an even better relationship with the Kamloops community. We invite you to come discover and explore science with us at our brand new location.”

That new location will be open for business on September 12. They are taking a much needed week off of regular public hours to finish moving and to set up and rearrange their new found space. They are super excited about the future and ask everyone to stay tuned to the announcement of their grand re-opening extravaganza open house that will follow later in the month. The Big Little Science Centre is moving to George Hilliard Elementary at 985 Holt Street. Kamloops KIA drives change

Last Friday, Kamloops KIA partnered with the local non-profit organization, Communities In Bloom to take part in the national KIA Drive Change contest. Organizations including The Kamloops Broncos football team, The Kamloops Blazers, The Kamloops Storm, Big Brothers Big Sisters, North Shore and Downtown Business Improvement Associations, the City of Kamloops, and a variety of local Rotary clubs got busy on two beautification projects: one along The Rivers Trail on Schubert Drive, and the other at the Lorne Street entrance to the Red Bridge. The national Drive Change contest will

award one KIA dealership from each region $3,000 if their plan and implementation to Drive Change in their community is chosen. If awarded

this money, Kamloops KIA will donate the prize to Communities In Bloom to purchase three more benches to put along The Rivers Trail.

Bursaries for local RN students Six Kamloops nursing students will each receive a $2,000 bursary to help pay for their education. The Nurses Education Bursary program is offered through StudentAid BC, which is designed to help eligible students offset the cost of their studies through loans, grants, bursaries, scholarships and special programs from the Province. Funding is awarded to qualified

applicants who demonstrate the greatest financial need. “B.C.’s population is growing and ageing, which puts increased pressure on our health care system. This bursary will not only help nurses finish their education, but hopefully, encourage them to pursue careers here in Kamloops, said KamloopsNorth Thompson MLA Terry Lake.

Keep On Moving improves health and fitness This fall the City of Kamloops and Interior Health are pleased to present Keep on Moving, a new program to identify safe exercise options within the Kamloops community. Working together, the City of Kamloops and Interior Health have developed the Keep On Moving program including: a fitness leader education program, designation process and accompanying logo. When you see the Keep on Moving logo, you can be confident that the exercise program has met specific guidelines developed by experts at the City of Kamloops and Interior Health. Guidelines include: Offers a minimum 30-minute class with appropriate warm up and cool down; includes a variety of fitness components including aerobic, strength, flexibility, balance, agility and coordination; provides multiple methods provided to monitor intensity during exercise and offers modifications based on different functional abilities; promotes self monitoring during exercise and encourages daily

aerobic exercise; provides health screening for all participants and obtains medical clearance for higher risk populations; demonstrates a documented emergency plan with the presence of an AED (automated external defibrillator). The Keep On Moving designation program has now been applied to those programs offered through the City of Kamloops at the Tournament Capital Centre and Westsyde Pool and Community Centre. Each program meeting the designation guidelines is identified by the Keep On Moving logo and instructors

have attended the Keep On Moving fitness leader education program to ensure safe exercise for all participants. These programs are truly designed for anyone interested in improving his/her health through fitness. Many people may wish to start an exercise program but may be reluctant for fear of injury or over-exertion. Perhaps they simply have never really exercised and do not know where to start. For more information or to register for a class, visit www.keeponmoving.ca.

Fall in to a program full of creative classes Whether you are sitting back on the grass at the park listening to the great live music, strolling along the Rivers Trail, taking swimming lessons at your local outdoor pool or enrolling in a class to learn a new skill, there is one thing that cannot be denied; living in the Kamloops has its perks. No matter what time of year it is, the City of Kamloops is full of fun stuff to do and learn including and whole host of classes that are hosted by the City’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department. Their brand new fall activity guide has just hit the streets full of fun recreation, sports, arts and culture. Here on the North Shore there are a few fun artistic classes that will appeal to kids and adults of all ages. They are all taught by professionals from our community, and the best part is that the courses are economical and maybe even free if you qualify for the City’s ARCH (Affordable Recreation for Community Health) Program. For all those creative kids and budding artists, talented artist Laura Bittante is facilitating a cartoon workshop. A fun workshop for youth with a passion for cartooning, this is the opportunity for those who never tried cartooning or would like to improve upon their current skills. “This is geared towards kids grade four and up, explains Laura. “You don’t have to be good at drawing. you just have to want to. If they enjoy drawing and want to improve and practice, this is a good opportunity to draw with other kids and see what others are doing.

Chamber’s response to HST result

On Friday Kamloops Chamber of Commerce released their response to the province’s HST referendum results. “The Kamloops Chamber is disappointed with today’s referendum results, stated Chamber President Peter Aylen. “While some sectors will be happy with a return to the PST/GST system, we have been hearing from our members that the HST reporting system was less complex and time consuming. We also know that the province would have been more competitive with other jurisdictions under the HST system. The BC business community will come forward to government with options on how to transition to the PST/GST as well as explore opportunities for a new consumption tax model.

Funding for invasive plant weed management MLAs Terry Lake and Kevin Krueger have announced $84,000 for the Southern Interior Weed Management Committee (SIWMC). This funding will help SIWMC treat high-risk invasive plant species and sites on Crown land (such as giant hogweed, hoary alyssum and field scabious, and reduce the spread of others), conduct surveys of new occurrences, do an inventory of marsh plume thistle, and monitor treatment efficacy.

This funding builds on the $3 million announced earlier this year for the Invasive Plant Council of BC to create an employment program – called Take Action – that will train and hire up to 150 people to manage invasive plants. An invasive plant is a nonnative plant that has been introduced, either intentionally or accidentally, from other areas and is harmful to the environment, economy or animal or

human health. Lake and Krueger state that this matters because invasive plants: harm the environment by out-competing native plants, altering ecosystems and creating an increased wildfire hazard; affect human health by causing skin irritation, blisters, scarring and severe breathing problems; impact animal health via toxins in some plants that make them inedible or toxic; harm the economy by negatively impact-

ing property and crop values and increasing costs associated with treating infestations on rangelands, gardens, parks or along roadsides; and impede recreation by making trails impassable, damaging fishing streams and puncturing tires. To learn more about the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Invasive Plant Program, visit www.for.gov.bc.ca/hra/plants/ index.htm.

The Kamloops Arts Council wants to enthusiastically remind you not to miss the last few days of the North Shore Artwalk, which runs until September 5. The red feet are back on the North Shore this year with 32 participating artists – bigger than ever! The North Shore supports the arts! Catch artist demonstrations at Northills Centre by the lottery centre: Pat Hall - Pastel on Monday, August 29, 10:00 am to noon; Lynda Boutilier – Painting on Friday, September 2, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. North Shore Artwalk is an event that partners local artists with North Shore Retailers. Everyone is invited to pick up a map at participating retailers and walk along Tranquille Road to take in

the art and perhaps shop a little in the wonderful North Shore stores and in the Northills Centre. North Shore Artwalk begins at Northills Centre – great parking!

Here is Stephanie Hurlburt, constituency assistant to Terry Lake, MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson, admiring the artwork of Danielle Saunders on display at Terry Lake’s constituency office on Tranquille as part of North Shore Artwalk. Danielle’s work ranges from coupling abstract backgrounds with hyperrealistic subjects to pop art portraits and western art. Danielle draws inspiration for her paintings from her western surroundings in Kamloops, and has always been fascinated by the movement and muscle structure of horses.

Pediatrics Palliative Care workshop

Interior Health and Canuck Place are planning a workshop for health care professionals in the Interior to focus on pediatric palliative care. The workshop, scheduled for March 2012 in Kamloops, will provide a unique chance to review best practices and work with other community professionals directly to develop a high quality and consistent interdisciplinary approach to pediatric palliative care in the Interior. Canuck Place in Vancouver is the provincial centre for children with a progressive life threatening illness. This workshop will offer Interior-based professionals a chance to collaborate and learn from five Canuck Place clinicians.

The workshop is being organized by Shelley Ockenden at Interior Health Nursing Support Services.

To learn more or discuss sponsorship opportunities, Ockenden can be contacted at 250-851-7414.

Kamloops Airport announces that an increase in the number of travelers in July, as compared to recent months of decreases was expected, as flight schedules and fares are now comparable to those offered at this period last year. Travelers are taking advantage of the adjusted flight schedules offered by both Air Canada Express and WestJet, which have greatly improved services to and beyond Vancouver and Calgary. There was a significant drop in aircraft movements this sum-

mer, which is solely attributable to the nearly non-existent forestry firefighting season, due to cooler and wetter weather. Of course this is good news for those who live, work and play in the forested areas of our region. Work on the expansion of the airport car park is nearing completion. Kamloops Airport would like to thank customers for their patience during this improvement project. Signs are being installed to better mark the new traffic patterns around the airport circle.

What’s up at the airport?

Those wanting to be married

Father Henry was planning a wedding at the close of the morning service. After the benediction Father Henry had planned to call the couple down to be married for a brief ceremony before the congregation. For the life of him, he couldn’t think of the names of those who were to be married. ‘Will those wanting to get married please come to the front?’ Father Henry requested. Immediately; nine single ladies, three widows, four widowers, and six single men stepped to the front.

Tranquille Shoppers Drug Mart ensures diabetes care

With so many people living with diabetes in the Kamloops area, Kamloops residents now have more access to diabetes information and services through the partnership of the Canadian Diabetes Association and Tranquille Shoppers Drug Mart in the Northhills Centre Mall. “Through our Community Pharmacy Outreach Program with our pharmacy partners, we are able to improve our reach, accessibility and visibility in the community, while recognizing pharmacies that are committed to a high standard of diabetes care. Tranquille Shoppers Drug Mart is the only the Canadian Diabetes Association Outreach Partners in the Kamloops area. The pharmacists have extensive diabetes training and by working together with physicians, provide excel-

lent care including counselling for diabetes patients. said Glenna Armstrong Canadian Diabetes Association Regional Branch Coordinator, Interior BC Region. “Sometimes it is not possible to see a doctor right away, so it is a real bonus to go to a pharmacy with questions and ask a pharmacist to get the needed information immediately, Armstrong added. Pharmacy partners provide Canadian Diabetes Association produced literature and resources, well informed and committed staff to assist with insulin meter training, and one- on-one consultations with pharmacists. The pharmacies also have a wide variety of diabetes supplies, including blood glucose monitors, test strips, lancets, and a variety of prescription and over the counter medications.

Funny thought for the day If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn’t it follow that electricians can be delighted and musicians denoted? How about deranged cowboys, debarked tree surgeons, and depressed dry cleaners?

“We are here to serve our community. Being diagnosed with diabetes may be very a difficult moment for these patients and their families and we want to make our patients realize that numerous treatments are available and proper

care of this common condition can lead to excellent results, says Jody Fisher, Diabetes Educator. For more diabetes information, visit Shoppers Drug Mart, 48-700 Tranquille Road, or call 250-376 -9010.
