Organizations come together The holidays really are all about giving of yourself to others. Here on the North Shore there is no shortage of good deeds and acts of kindness. We see them everyday and here at the North Shore Echo we are so grateful to witness many of them first hand. One of our most hands-on groups is the wonderful folks at Kamloops Immigrant Services on Tranquille Road. This organization is instrumental in helping newcomers to Canada gain insight, valuable skills and friendships that will last their lifetime here in Canada. They do an immense amount of work in our community. They know that they couldn’t accomplish all their goals without a little help from the community and just wanted to express their thanks this December to some of their community partners that helped make a few of their projects fly. One of these projects is their Global Kitchen. “Kamloops Immigrant Services is excited to announce that, thanks to the support of the BC Interior Community Foundation, we will be running a ten-week healthy cooking program for newcomers to Canada, starting in January, 2015,” explains Paul Lagace, executive director of Kamloops Immigrant Services. Our Global Kitchen is intended to help newcomers reduce social isolation by making new connec-

tions in the community, which will also provide practice speaking English, information about the Canada Food Guide and increase cross-cultural understanding. “The group will meet weekly at the Community Kitchen at Mt. Paul United Church to cook to-
gether as a group,” he continues. “Each week we will explore a different principle of healthy eating from the Canada Food Guide. We will use a hands-on approach to learning by working as a group to prepare healthy Canadian-style dishes that demonstrate the topics

we cover. Additionally, each week one of the participants will teach us how to cook a favourite dish from their home country. The participants will get a recipe book with everything we cook, as well as a certificate upon completion of the program. We currently have funding to run one cycle of this program, but if successful, we hope to be able to continue the project going forward.” Another big project they embarked on this year was the beautiful mural behind their building that may have caught your eye as you drive along the Tranquille Corridor. The Crossing Bridges Multicultural Mural is a beautiful example of what can happen when we bring many different cultures together to create art. “Kamloops Immigrant Services is pleased to acknowledge the support of the Kamloops Arts Council’s outstanding 2014 Crossing Bridges program,” says Paul. “While creating one of the most beautiful murals in Kamloops, newcomers, permanent residents, citizens and First Nations gained a deeper understanding and respect for the unique ties that have made Canadian diversity a source of national pride and one of our greatest strengths.” With guidance and oversight from skilled artists, the mural was - continued on page 2

Skating access for everyone The City of Kamloops has opened public skating to participants in wheelchairs. This addition of accessible recreation to the Parks, Culture and Recreation programs is new to the fall 2014 skating season. These drop-in programs will be available at Brock and Valleyview arenas and will allow patrons in wheelchairs on the ice during public skating session. Helmets are mandatory for the person in the wheelchair. The wheel-
chair attendants must wear a helmet and skates. Come out for one of the free value-added programs this season: Preschool Skating, Family Only, Adult Only and Seniors Only Skating. The City of Kamloops strongly recommends the use of CSA-approved helmets for all ages and all programs. All program information including schedules, cancellations and program descriptions can be found at kamloops.ca/arenas.
Kamloops Immigrant Services making a difference
– continued from page 1 conceived by participants to engage newcomers, established and First Nations, in exploring creative expression. Kamloops Immigrant Services specifically chose the primary artist facilitator in order to ameliorate learning and connection between our country’s First
Peoples and newcomers from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. For the majority of the youth and adult participants, it was their first time learning about Canada’s First Nations. Many indicated gratitude for the arts workshops and the painting of the mural as a means of creating connections for participants,
improving health, easing anxiety, relieving isolation and crossing age barriers, and ultimately harnessing the power of the arts to heal and connect beyond cultural and/or language barriers. “On behalf of the board of directors, staff, volunteers and participating artists, we wish to acknowledge the tremendous support of the Kamloops Arts Council in providing the funding to achieve an excellent multicultural mural through the Kamloops Arts Council Crossing Bridges Program,” he finishes. Organizations coming together is a theme in Kamloops that is demonstrated by the powerful partnerships that Kamloops Immigrant Services has made. Next time you drive by their building at 448 Tranquille Road, give some thought into how you can bridge barriers and make powerful connections in your own life. Tanya Orozco, freelance

Boys and Girls Club win BC Hydro award The Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops is the recipient of a $10,000 donation from BC Hydro after being named a 2014 Community Champion. All funds will support the delivery of hands-on, environmentallyfocused programming that engages families, children and youth. This award gives the Club resources to hire a part time sustainability leader who will champion the development of monthly programming based on six chosen themes: water, energy, air, waste, transportation and food. On a monthly basis, the selected theme will be researched and explored, with the club implementing best practices and finding creative solutions to their challenges. The new sustainability leader will oversee the whole project and find simple and innovative ways to sustain its momentum. Building on the club’s nearly 60-year history of providing inclusive, community-
based programming in Kamloops, this initiative will appeal to children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm while demonstrating how to lead by example and help bring about long-lasting change. The club also hopes to be a role model to other businesses and non-profits by sharing their story and successes through their website and social media. BC Hydro’s Community Champions program recognizes non-profit organizations that demonstrate leadership through their commitment to sustainability, conservation and the environment. Through an online public voting process, the top five most popular video submissions from a list of 12 finalists were awarded $10,000 each to support their community initiative. Videos from the five winners as well as finalists from across B.C. can be viewed at bchydro.com/communitychampions.

The little activity centre that grew There is a wonderful place right inside the Brock Shopping Centre that has been getting a lot of attention lately. That is the Centre for Seniors Information Activity Centre. The Activity Centre is a wonderful place, which is open to all seniors to come, learn, make friends and enjoy their time. It has grown so much in popularity in the few years they have been open that they are in the midst of expansion. “We are working on an expansion,” explains Brenda Prevost, executive director of the Centre for Seniors Information. “We just didn’t have enough space for everything we do. It will give us much more room for our bingo, dances, craft fairs and more.” The amount of things that go on in the centre are mind-blowing. They have drop-in hours Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm where people 50 plus can come, get together, play games, cards, pool and more. They are very busy and have a wide range of activities. In addition to drop-in they also host crafts, woodcarvings, offer education, provide lunch for members, have regular dances every Sunday night, bingo and a whole host of special events after hours and on weekends. “We built this centre based on a
social enterprise model,” continues Brenda. “We rent and provide space for a variety of community groups and for special events. We house the Lions Club, foot care and blood pressure clinics, personal health services, training sessions, anniversary celebrations, meeting space, parties, pancake breakfasts and much more. Renting out space allows us to keep this space affordable and maintains revenue coming in.” One of their next big events is their New Year’s Dine and Dance and Volunteer Appreciation. Cocktails will be served at 5:00pm with dinner at 6:30pm. A dance will follow right behind. Tickets are only $25 for
members and volunteers, $35 for guests. They can be purchased at either the Northills Mall location or right at the Activity Centre. “We work hard to recognize our volunteers,” finishes Brenda. “Volunteers are the backbone of the organization. So far in 2014 alone we have logged 11,413 service hours by volunteers.” For more information you can contact Brenda Prevost and the Centre for Seniors Information BC Society at 778-470-6000. The CSI Activity Centre is located in the Brock Shopping Centre at 9A 1800 Tranquille Road and is open 9:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday. Tanya Orozco, freelance

Dralion makes it’s way to Kamloops The wonder and amazement of Cirque du Soliel’s Dralion is about to hit Kamloops. After 15 years performing around the world, Dralion will make its finale curtain call in January 2015. From December 24 to December 28, Kamloops will experience the magic of Cirque du Soleil’s signature production that has performed in more than 150 cities. Dralion is a signature Cirque du Soleil production acclaimed by close to eleven million people worldwide since it premiered in 1999 in Montreal. After many years performing under the big top, Dralion is now presented in arenas around the world, with the same quality performance. Fusing the 3,000 year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dralion draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and its never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature.
The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West. In the world of Dralion, cultures blend, Man and Nature are one, and balance is achieved. Bearing the unmistakable signature of Cirque du Soleil and featuring 50 international
acrobats, gymnasts, clowns, musicians and singers, Dralion soars to new heights as it defies the laws of nature. Tickets can be purchased online at cirquedusoleil.com/dralion, ticketmaster.ca or by calling 1-855-9855000, or in person at the Interior Savings Centre Box Office.

would prefer to write to the baby Jesus. So his mum told him that would be fine. Sam went to his room and wrote ‘ Dear Jesus, I have been a very good boy and would like to have a bike for Christmas.’ But he wasn’t very happy when he read it over. So he decided to try again and this time he wrote ‘Dear Jesus, I’m a good boy most of the time and would like a bike for Christmas.’ He read it back and wasn’t happy with that one either. He tried a third version. ‘Dear Jesus, I could be a good boy if I tried hard and especially if I had a new bike.’ He read that one too, but he still wasn’t satisfied. So, he decided to go out for a walk while he thought about a better approach. After a short time he passed a house with a small statue of the Virgin Mary in the front garden. He crept in, stuffed the statue under his coat, hurried home and hid it under the bed. Then he wrote this letter. ‘Dear Jesus, If you want to see your mother again, you’d better send me a new bike.’

A Christmas Story When four of Santa’s elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones, Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule. Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her Mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More stress. Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked, and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys. So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered that the elves had hidden the
liquor, and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider pot, and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw end of the broom. Just then the doorbell rang, and irritable Santa trudged to
the door. He opened the door, and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said, very cheerfully, “Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn’t it a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?” And so began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

echo stargazer Dear Sagittarius: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) As everyone wants to play, you’ll want to just stay home and focus on what makes you happy. Recent events have left you in a whirl and it’s time to take some time for yourself. If you’re looking for love it’s waiting somewhere you already know. Dear Capricorn: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) Even if you’re usually shy and reserved, you’re looking beautiful, approachable, and like someone people should know. Expect a stranger to say hello. Extra work paves the way towards a healthy wallet. Dear Aquarius: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Even though you feel a boost of moving forward energy and you’d just like to get a move on, the past is going to come calling. It’s good news but it’ll make you rethink your decisions. Begin changes in the way you communicate. Dear Pisces: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) The busy days continue with a full social schedule added to the usual office mix. You’ve been shining lately and you’d like to get out and have some fun but be careful, hidden enemies are lurking. A surprise is waiting in your checkbook. Dear Aries: (Mar. 21 - April 20) The holiday season comes calling as the pace heats up and you’re thrust into the spotlight. You’ll want to attend as many parties as you can. Luck is still following you so don’t be shy. Dear Taurus: (Apr. 21 - May 21) Love is on the mind and a rendezvous waits. Finish up chores and get to the gym. You’re going to want all of your energy for the weekend. A fresh attitude towards love settles in. Dear Gemini: (May 22 - June 21) You’re still hot from the weekend and as Monday rolls around you want to continue to play! Go ahead and have some fun but mid-week you’ll want to ease up and check the pocketbook. Love gets difficult shortly. Take your chances now. Dear Cancer: (June 22 - July 22) You may appear business as usual but love is in the air for Cancer. You can’t deny the admiring glances as you walk down the street. Say hello to a stranger at the coffee shop. Dear Leo: (July 23 - Aug 22) Details and lists fill the week. I know, not very fun but you’ll add your personal Leo charm and melt hearts during your daily routine. This also means the gym. Dear Virgo: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) A creative project takes off and it puts you in the mood to promote your efforts. You’re lucky in both love and money so take a chance and expect the best. Help arrives from the past. Dear Libra (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) The Moon gives some much-needed emotional stability and a general feel good boost to the ego. And just in time as a creative project heats up. Love brings a practical nature to the home but a real tree would be nice too. Dear Scorpio: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Shake off the blahs and get to work. You might not be into it at the moment but you’ve got deadlines and gifts to wrap. Love has changed but once again you’ll be ok. Your daily routine takes a hit.
