December blitz of flying road checks The Traffic Section of the Kamloops RCMP kicked off their December Road Safety blitz by launching a pedestrian crossing initiative. Public awareness and concern for pedestrian safety has been heightened in recent weeks by a spike in the number of injury and fatal crashes involving pedestrians in the city. The public had

called for more police action to address the problem and an analyses of the pedestrian crash data indicated that pedestrian decision making was a factor in many of the collisions. Some of these factors include pedestrians stepping into the travel lane of the roadway from between parked vehicles, crossing the road-

Miniature journey

way between intersections, entering the crosswalks without making a visual safety assessment regarding the distance and speed of an approaching vehicle and crossing contrary to the pedestrian signals. While vehicles are required to yield for pedestrians, it is equally imperative for drivers to first see and safely stop their vehicle in response to a pedestrian. Officers will be focusing attention at various high volume intersections around the city, targeting drivers distracted by texting or talking on cell phones and those running the intersection lights.

They will also be on the lookout for pedestrians crossing the streets between intersections or disobeying the crossing signals at the controlled intersections. These safety operations will be ongoing throughout December. Police Counter Attack road checks will also highlight the holiday road safety initiative. Officers will be conducting both large scale check stop operations and smaller “Flying Road Checks” where small groups of officers set up spontaneous check stops for brief periods then move on to other locations around Kamloops.

Music and motion on 2141 Great ready for plenty of photo ops as you steam back into history with Kamloops Heritage Railway (KHR). Take a journey back to Christmas past with carolers, candy canes and hot chocolate. Spend an enjoyable evening on this short excursion on a real steam train. You will visit historic St. Joseph’s church and hear a special Christmas story aboard this beautiful train pulled by restored Canadian National Railway 2141 locomotive, ‘Spirit of Kamloops’. Departure dates and times are: Wednesday, December 19 at 7:00pm, Thursday, December 20 at 7:00pm, Friday, December 21 at 4:30pm and 7:00pm, Saturday, December 22 at 4:30pm Mystic Dreams employee Doug Olson proudly shows our crackerjack, roving reporter his Christmas house and train display. Doug started this collection about 12 years ago and has added to it every year since. He was spurred on to start the collection when he happened to find a set of four jewelry boxes, shaped and decorated to look like little houses, at a thrift store. Today the collection boasts 113 buildings, 75 people and a HO scale Christmas train. Of special note are the outhouse and the new barbershop quartet. It’s all on display at Mystic Dreams and everyone is invited to stop by and take a look. Mystic Dreams is located at 419 Tranquille Road.

and 7:00pm. The ‘Spirit of Christmas’ train ride lasts roughly 70 minutes. Making a reservation will guarantee you travel onboard and are actually required, as these trips sell out every year and inside coach seating is assigned at the time of booking and payment. Passengers should always dress for the weather when traveling onboard. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at the station 60 minutes prior to departure. For further information on this and other KHR rail tours please visit kamrail.com, contact the ticket office at 250-374-2141 or email info@kamrail.com.

BLSC expanding operations The Stollery Charitable Foundation recently made a generous donation to the BIG Little Science Centre (BLSC) Society. The donation will be used to help the BLSC with lease costs, the purchase of demonstration equipment, and operations. The Stollery Charitable Foundation has been a generous supporter of BIG Little Science Centre since its beginning. They are honoured to continue to receive their attention and support towards developing a passion for science in the Kamlooops community. The end result is more exciting hands-on science for everyone.

And now they’re ready for the next step. They took their first whirl around the dance floor in 1948 and have been kicking up their heels ever since. When they started looking for retirement living options, they were pleased to find out that Chartwell Retirement Residences offers active lifestyle programs like their signature Rhythm n’ Moves class.

15th Annual Wildlights Celebration The BC Wildlife Park is about to launch its 15th annual Wildlights Celebration. The highlight of this year’s event will once again be the “Symphony of Lights Show” which will feature a spectacular laser light show synchronized to music. Visitors will also be treated to viewing nightly wolf and elk feedings, and look in on the owls in the Bird of Prey exhibit. After watching the Symphony of Lights Show, you can dare to challenge the Giant Maze, take a trip around the park on the Wildlife Express miniature train and then enjoy a wagon ride from the Home Hardware Family Farm. The young and old will be entertained

by Uncle Chris the Clown nightly or you can simply take a leisurely stroll around the Park to see all the dazzling lights and light displays. New this year are two rope light displays, one being, “Flags of the World” with 25 different nations featured. Finally sit back, relax and sip some hot chocolate around crackling campfires. What a great way to spend time with family and friends over the holiday season. The festival runs nightly from December 14 to January 6, except Christmas Day with operating hours from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. For more information call 250-573-3242 or visit BCzoo.org.

Cheerful giving to reach isolated seniors The Seniors Outreach Society (SOS) strives to assist seniors who are feeling lonely or isolated. The holidays can be a tough time for individuals who are on low incomes and are living on their own. The idea of a simple gift to a senior who is in such a position as this makes the holidays a lot less lonely for them. This year, SOS received many offers from different organizations to relieve some loneliness and isolation for the seniors they work with. These organizations want to give

gifts to low income, isolated seniors during the Christmas season. Valley First is a partner in the Angel Tree Program, designed to help spread holiday cheer to the less fortunate members of our community by providing for them during the holidays. SOS is being provided gifts and donations by Valley First and will be giving them to the seniors who are in need of these items the most. Employees at the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) are acting

as Secret Santas for 20 low income and isolated seniors. They have purchased gifts for these seniors based on suggestions and SOS will be delivering the gifts to these seniors’ homes. Another group of MCFD workers are “adopting” a low income senior couple for the holiday season by providing them with gifts. An employee of BCAA is also adopting a senior for the holidays and will be providing them with gifts as well. Seniors will also benefit from the St. Peter’s

Calendar Kids Local photographer Tiffany Christianson has produced a 2013 calendar that celebrates the little ones born at Royal Inland Hopsital this year. On her blog Tiffany has posted some pictures of the first five baby models; Mr. January, Ms. February, Mr. March, Ms. April and Ms. May. Look for them at tiffanychristianson. com/blog. If you’d like a copy of the calendar for yourself or to give as a Christmas gift, you can pick them up at the RIH Foundation office at 311 Columbia Street.

Kamloops FireFit Team defend their title

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) / New Gold FireFit Team has successfully defended their title of World Team Champions. Competing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the end of October, the team of Graham MacKenzie, Mike Brown, Shawn Davidson, Scott Leslie, and Don Clarke were crowned 2012 World Team Champs. KFR/New Gold FireFit Team has held the World Team Champions title two years in a row and the Canadian title for four years consecutively.

The Challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession’s rigors to the public. Wearing full bunker gear and the SCOTT AirPak breathing apparatus, pairs of competitors race head-tohead as they simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by performing a linked series of five tasks including climbing the 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized 175 lb ‘victim’ as they race against themselves, their opponent and the clock.

Glaucoma We are pleased to announce that Dr. Donald Sanford has joined our practice. Dr. Sanford has been practicing optometry since graduating from Pacific University in 1981. New patients and referrals welcome!

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the optic nerve is damaged often due to high internal pressure. Your optometrist will check pressures for all persons over the age of forty or with a family history of glaucoma. Glaucoma develops gradually and painlessly with no early signs. Therefore routine visual assessments are necessary to avoid a decrease in your peripheral vision. Treatment includes eye drops daily which often prevents further deterioration of vision. See Takahashi Optometry Centre for all your eye health needs.

Happy Holidays! I hope this year has been happy and healthy for you and your loved ones! I know our extended family has been able to celebrate many happy occasions. I had a bit of a revelation last Christmas; I am almost ashamed to say. I am sure that I mentioned in our last letter that we had started playing darts at the Eagles once a week with my parents. I noticed that my dad wasn’t wearing his hearing aids when he came to darts and I asked him why. “There’s just too much noise – I do better without them” was his answer. I was shocked! I asked him, “Where else don’t you wear your hearing aids?” To which he replied, “I don’t wear them to bowling either. It just sounds like a bunch of noise and hens clucking in the background!” I asked him why he never said anything and he said “You’re so busy, I didn’t want to be a bother.” This just wouldn’t do. I’ve been in the hearing aid industry for over 12 years and I am the first one to tell my customers that the right hearing aid will make all the difference in the world. Not just for the person who wears the hearing aids but also for their family. I immediately knew what Dad’s Christmas present would be. He was a bit surprised when he opened the box. He said that he already had a pair of hearing aids to which I replied, “But you don’t wear them!” The joy of having our home right above the office is that I was able to program his hearing aids on Christmas morning. This year Dad stayed for the entire Christmas day and it wasn’t until after he left when my teenaged children commented on what a nice visit they had with Grandpa. He didn’t seem to be pacing like he normally does. It was then that I realized that my Dad must have been struggling with his hearing more than he ever let on, and because he had his hearing loss MY whole life, from being exposed to excessive noise in the military, I thought that his short visits were because he was the kind of guy who didn’t like to over stay his welcome. He is so much more involved with our family when it is easier for him to hear the conversations that go on around him. This past year he’s been wearing his new hearing aids all day long including in difficult situations like darts and bowling. It concerned me that my father hadn’t told me about this difficulty before and it makes me wonder how many of our customers struggle with this problem. The technology today has improved so much that there’s no reason that someone should have to struggle to hear. Please let us or your loved ones know about your hearing difficulties so that they can be addressed. It may be time to upgrade your hearing aids and perhaps benefit from the new hearing aid technology that’s available or maybe a simple adjustment is all you need. Insurance companies and extended health plans often have provisions for hearing aid replacements. The New Year started out with a bang! I celebrated my January birthday with Blaine in Vegas where I showed him the art of gambling. He became discouraged at the slot machines and was going to throw away his 18 cent chit when I stole it right out of his hand and proceeded to turn it into $86.00. This has been my favourite story all year long! The beginning of 2012 was pretty exciting for Joanne too. She stretched out her 50th birthday celebration from December, where she went on a family trip to

Costa Rica, all the way to February when her husband threw her a surprise birthday party. (I don’t think that she was too surprised.) Lynda is now a grandma for the third time. Her daughter Kate had a baby girl in March. This is the first girl grandbaby and that makes it all the more special. 2011 was a busy time in their family too. Her oldest daughter Mandy was accepted into the nursing program at T.R.U. and started this last September and her youngest daughter Crystal graduated from high school in June. Although it seems that her schedule was very busy, she still had time to fit in a trip to Cuba with her husband. Cuba was quite an experience and she said that she had a fabulous time. I don’t know whether you’ve noticed this or not but my husband is a bit of a nerd. (I mean this in the nicest sense of the word – he’s a complete technology geek) In April he fulfilled a lifelong dream when he and his best friend Shayne went to Comic-Con in Calgary and saw the entire cast of Star Trek the Next Generation as well as many other actors from shows like Stargate, Sanctuary and the Harry Potter movie series. Blaine made a conscious effort to become more healthy and active this year. He changed his diet and like many of our clients, started golfing as often as possible. It worked! He’s lost over 40 lbs and feels terrific. Even with his improved health he will have to live to a ripe old age 108 for us to make the 68th year wedding anniversary milestone like his grandparents did this past May. One of the year’s highlights for Blaine and I was the first ever Hearing Innovation Expo. We saw guest speakers like Bill Clinton, Sir Richard Branson and the Celebrity Apprentice winning actress Marlee Matlin. Marlee is a deaf actress whose charity of choice was the Starkey Hearing Foundation. The funds that she won on behalf of Starkey were used in Kenya. Marlee was not only able to have this money donated on her behalf but she also accompanied the Starkey Canada volunteer team, comprised of hearing instrument practitioners and audiologists, to Kenya to help fit hearing impaired children. The five day Expo featured speakers, classes, seminars and even a life-size working model of the office of the future. Honestly, I felt like I was in an episode of the Jetson’s. The whole experience was mind-boggling. In my lifetime I have seen so many changes and it seems that we’ve only just reached the tip of the iceberg. When I stop to think about how different the world is today it makes me think about our oldest client – Mary. Mary turned 104 in February and I can only imagine how she must have felt about all these new-fangled things. Like many of you, we saw Mary a couple of times a year and her passing this summer weighed heavy on our hearts. I’m proud to tell you that my daughter Erika graduated from grade 12 this year. She is now attending T.R.U. with the goal of becoming a special needs teacher specializing in Autism. You may have noticed that my son Alex is no longer at the front counter when you come in. He’s gone on to other ‘young adult’ type activities and in his place we have our newest staff member Anna. Anna is a little shy at first but you’ll appreciate her friendly manner and sense of humour the more you get to know her. In August Blaine and I had a whirlwind weekend in Minneapolis

attending the Starkey Hearing Foundation Gala. The Gala is an annual event to raise funds for the Foundation’s work of supplying and fitting hearing aids to underprivileged people around the world. It’s our personal goal to volunteer our time and expertise on one of the upcoming missions. (If you’re interested in learning more about this foundation just go to www.sotheworldmayhear.org. On the flip side of that, we took a week of vacation time to go camping on Adams Lake and also attend the Barriere Rodeo. This was a completely relaxing way to end the summer and it almost matched the feeling I got when we finally finished our home and office renovations. This means that our parking lot and landscaping is finally complete. I’m sure our neighbours are happy; I know our customers are as they can now pull right up to the front door. And now we’ve come full circle and are heading into another Christmas season. As we have for the past 12 years, we invite our customers, friends and neighbours to stop in for a glass of eggnog or perhaps a holiday treat on Friday, December 21st from noon until 4 pm. If you can’t make it on that day, don’t hesitate to stop by sometime before Christmas to have your hearing aids cleaned and get your holiday supply of batteries.

Once again, I have to thank you for your friendships and in the spirit of the holidays wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! ~ Jan
