Christmas comedy for the whole family From the people that brought you the wildly popular “Cinderella – The Panto” in 2011, The Laughing Stock Theatre Society of BC is pleased to announce its December production of “Puss in Boots”. This is the classic fairy tale - like you’ve never seen before! In the United Kingdom a Pantomime, or “Panto” as it is affectionately called, is a form of highly entertaining interactive theatre, performed around the Christmas season for the entertainment of millions of families. Many of the stories are based on popular, even if slightly skewed, fairy tales and has something for everyone. This traditional British Panto will run at the Sagebrush Theatre from December 24 to 31, with both evening and matinee performances available. Puss in Boots – the Panto is by Lorraine Mason with additional material by Vance Schneider. As the Artistic director of the show, Vance says “Last year’s presentation proved to us that the desire to have affordable family entertainment available during the Christmas Season is overwhelming! With sold out shows, and word-of-mouth advertising that has been continuing throughout the year, we realized that we needed to take the annual

If there is one thing that kids love to do, it’s dressing up in costume! So

come to the show as your favourite princess, hero or tree! The entire set for Puss in Boots is being painted and stored in a barn at Tranquille Farm Fresh. Owners 1Tim and Annette McLeod partnered with the theatre group and exchanged the service of actors to haunt their Halloween Corn maze for the use of the space.

Vance also noted, “Our auditions brought nearly 30 children into our chorus and the 18 principle actors performing are all local Kamloopians. Add a crew of 15 and we have a very big show!” Dame Washalot and a zany cast of characters will make up this year’s traditional British Panto. – continued on page 2

KYSA re-elects president for 2013 board Graham Cope, a long-time Westsyde resident and father of two children who play youth soccer, has been re-elected president of the Kamloops Youth Soccer Association (KYSA) for another one-year term. Cope has been on the KYSA board of directors for the past six years and has served as the Association’s president for five. Colin Guise, who lives in the Brocklehurst area, has been re-elected vice-president. This coming year will mark Guise’s

sixth year on the KYSA board and his second year serving as vice-president. The president and vicepresident of the youth soccer governing body are elected from within the seven-person executive, all of whom are volunteers. There are also two new faces on the KYSA board. Longtime referee Chris Butcher and Rep team coach Tony Cuzzetto were elected to the board at the Association’s Annual General

Meeting on November 29. Butcher and Cuzzetto replace Jacqueline Carroll and Mark MacKenzie, who chose not to seek re-election upon completion of their current terms, which expired at this year’s AGM. MacKenzie sat on the board for eight years, one of

which was as vice-president. He is continuing his involvement in youth soccer in 2013 as head coach of the U-13 Girls Rep team. The other three members of the KYSA executive include Sharon Cadieux, Laura Leadbetter Fuoco and John Moon.

Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo released

the results from her Responsible Resource Development Survey. “I was very pleased with the volume of feedback I received. Although surveys like this one are not carried out with the same rigorous standard of data collection that a professional polling agency would employ, it nevertheless provides an informative snapshot of how some of my constituents stand on this issue,” said McLeod. The responses are categorized into four areas: support for the government’s strategy, support with questions or concerns, those opposed to the strategy, and unsure. As of December 7, 2012, my office has received 974 responses from across the riding. These included 606 communications in support (62%), 48 in support with questions or concerns (5%), 260 opposed (27%), and 60 (6%) unsure. “I find these numbers encouraging, as it suggests many of my constituents support the government’s action to balance the need for economic development with environmental, health and safety concerns,” stated McLeod. “It was a pleasure reading and considering each and every communication I received on this issue regardless of perspective,” concluded McLeod.

THE HIGHEST CHRISTMAS TREE!

It seems Kamloops Scrap Iron has their own Christmas tradition they like to share. Every year their Christmas tree sits high atop the crane overlooking the North Shore for all to enjoy!

Skewed fairly tale has something for everyone – continued from page 1 The adults will certainly get enough innuendo and double entendre of the “nudge-nudge, wink-wink” variety to keep them rolling in the aisles. Panto is guaranteed to give the whole family a rollicking good time and encompasses elements of physical or slapstick comedy, music, dancing and audience interaction. The characters are not what you’d expect, with women playing men, and men, ah, playing

women... and... well you’ll have to see it to understand it! The costumes are always overthe-top and represent a carnival or circus type atmosphere. Matinees shows begin at 1:00pm on December 24, 26, 29, 30 and 31. Evening performances start at 7:00pm on December 27, 28, 29 and 30. Tickets are available now from Kamloops Live Box Office, 1025 Lorne Street, call 250-374-5483 or reserve online at

kamloopslive.ca. There are seniors and family rates and admittance for children under five years is free. “Be ready for a fast-paced, show, bigger and better than last year!” remarks Vance. Show details and more information on The Art of Panto can be found at thelaughingstock. ca. Get your tickets today to see this hilarious extravaganza suitable for all ages. Jody Tippett

PST transition training A recent survey by the BC Chamber of Commerce has revealed that 63 per cent of businesses do not feel prepared for the transition back to the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on April 1, 2013. Through the depth and breadth of the Chamber of Commerce network in BC, the BC Chamber was able to reach businesses of all sizes, sectors and regions of the province. In total, 970 businesses across BC took part in the PST business survey. Of those, 62 per cent were not aware of the changes that will be made to the PST, and 73 per cent did not feel they had received adequate information. “The Kamloops Chamber is making every effort to help our members with this transition,” states Maurice Hindle,

Kamloops Chamber president. “We plan at least two more sessions so that our members are thoroughly informed on the matter.” The Kamloops Chamber hosted a seminar with KPMG in September, informing members of the upcoming transition. On January 21, the chamber will be hosting a session for their members with the Ministry of Finance. An

interactive workshop with KPMG, focused on individual business sectors, is planned for early spring as well. For more information on the transition back to the PST, businesses are encouraged to contact the Kamloops Chamber, the BC Chamber website or any of the resources from the Provincial Government.

BUSINESS PROFILE

NORTH SHORE ECHO

Everyday stuff…but cheaper at Loboy Market Everyone likes a deal and there are deals to be had at Loboy Market. Loboy has deals that aren’t too good to be true. Loboy Market is a small and unique company that offers a diverse array of goods at a cheaper price than anyone might think possible. Their first year in business at 459 Tranquille Rd has been a phenomenal success. Loboy’s claim to fame has been “lotsa stuff” and they continue to bring shoppers an experience that keeps them coming back not only in-store, but to their online marketplace using social media. Mike Cottrell and Sue Bellavie are well beyond and past the startup stage as they have put into practice what many years of running a similar type of business with Mike’s father taught them. They source out and search for above average deals at bottom dollar prices. The couple purchases and brings in salvaged and distressed merchandise acquired through insurance claims, manufacturers, retailers, distributors, and just about any business that has quality overstock, overrun, liquidated or salvage merchandise for sale. They can pass big savings on to you by reselling these products at up to half off retail or better, often undercutting big box store pricing. “ Our deals are real deals.” states Mike. “The price you see is the price you pay, all taxes are included.” Checking in often is a good idea because there is always something different being offered in the store. They don’t know what will turn up next and you never know what you will find! Inventory moves

constantly and some items are snatched up even before they have made it off the delivery truck! Fishing gear to furniture to fashion are all part of their product mix at pennies on the dollar. Sue spends time carefully categorizing and posting photos of new items to the store’s Facebook Group. This gives local patrons a chance to peek at quality and the value of new items being introduced. This saves shoppers time, and more importantly, money. Sales are first come first serve. On some mornings the couple is greeted by shoppers who have browsed online and can’t wait for the doors to open. The online marketing has been a huge compliment to the physical store. Items do sell fast so check back often for great deals that arrive daily. Don’t miss out! Visit their store front or their online market

for a huge variety of anything you can imagine. The store is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm and there is plenty of parking. They accept cash, Visa and Mastercard.

All I want for Christmas The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised when a young lady aged about 20 years old walked up and sat on his lap. Now, we all know that Santa doesn’t usually take requests from adults, but she smiled very nicely

at him and he asked, “What do you want for Christmas?” “Something for my mother, please,” replied young lady sweetly. “Something for your mother? Well, that’s very loving and thoughtful of you,” smiled Santa. ‘What do would you like me to bring her?’ Without pausing, the lady answered quickly, “A millionaire son-in-law.”

We’re too pooped to publish! It’s Christmas holidays at the Echo! Our office will be closed from December 24 to 28. We will be back with Christmas balls a danglin’ on Monday, December 31. Happy Holidays to all!

Kamloops residents receive education awards Two Kamloops residents are recipients of BC Housing education awards that will help them further their education, achieve goals and improve their lives. At age 22, Heather Cameron was addicted

to drugs and pregnant. She was able to get the help and guidance she needed through a recovery program specifically for expecting mothers. After giving birth to her first daughter, Heather began to build a non-profit grassroots agency to serve expecting mothers with substance abuse. Cameron is the recipient of a $1,000 Kinloch Education Award and is enrolled in the nursing program at Thompson Rivers University. Tamara Duncan, a 38-year-old mother of four, is the recipient of a $750 bursary. Tamara started her practical nurse program at Sprott Shaw Community College this September.

Tamara remarked, “Being a licensed practical nurse will allow me to enter the health profession quickly and achieve financial stability. In the future, I want to continue registered nursing training.” Anyone who is living in subsidized housing, or receiving rent subsidy through BC Housing’s Rental Assistance Program, is eligible to apply for one of the 83 bursaries and awards. The funds can be put towards tuition or other educational expenses such as books or supplies. To find out more about the Award Program visit bchousing.org/tenants/services/educationawards

Help fly hope around the world Developing World Connections (DWC) is teaming up with Aeroplan to participate in the company’s Beyond Miles charitable pooling program from now until January 4. This 30 day holiday campaign asks people to donate their Aeroplan miles so the local non-profit organization can use them for its international and national travel needs. Last year, DWC collected close to 60,000 points. This year, the organization is hoping to get at least 100,000 donated Aeroplan Miles. “If we get to 90 per cent of our goal, Aeroplan will contribute an additional ten per cent to bump us up to 100,000 points,” says Developing World Connections’ communications coordinator, Sarah Johnstone, “but of course, we would love to exceed that goal. The Kamloops community is very generous and we’re hoping for their support again this year.” Donations can be made online through the Aeroplan Beyond Miles website. A link for this website can be found at developingworldconnections.org or donors can drop by Developing World Connections’ office at

YOUR HOROSCOPE SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21)  Pleasure trips will be most enjoyable and should lead to new and lasting friendships. Involvement in groups of interest will bring you in touch with important individuals. Find a quiet spot where you can work diligently and stay out of the way. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20)  You may want to get involved in financial investments presented to you. Don’t forget to let your mate know how much you care. Get involved in creative projects that could turn into moneymaking ventures. Don’t let your emotions take over. AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19)  You will find that superiors may not see situations as you do. You are best not to discuss your personal life with others. You will drive your emotional partner crazy this week. You should visit a friend or relative who hasn’t been well. PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Entertainment should include your whole family. Don’t start any arguments unless you’re prepared to accept irrevocable results. You may end up being blamed if anything goes wrong. Attempt to face key issues with lovers or problems could escalate. ARIES (Mar 21-April 20)  It’s time you let your true feelings out. Consider the source before you believe what you hear. You can pick up valuable information if you listen to those with more experience. Expect to experience a sudden reversal of fortune. TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21)  It’s time to make professional changes. You can raise your standard of living if you pick up some freelance work on the side. You’re in a high cycle for romance. Your involvement in interest groups may bring you popularity. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You may be able to impart knowledge that’s innovative to those searching for a new angle. You need a change and you need to earn more cash. If you address those in a position to grant you favors you should get the support you require. CANCER (June 22-July 22)  This is a good day to check out your investments. Romantic relationships could be under pressure. Set the ball in motion and be relentless until you complete the project. Don’t get intimately involved with a coworker. LEO (July 23-Aug 22)  Get busy on those home improvement projects that you’ve been procrastinating about. Your determination may make you a little overbearing when dealing with others. You can expect insincere gestures of friendliness this week. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sept 23)  You may find that female colleagues will be more help than you anticipated. Take care of the needs of elders in your family. Make any decisions you have to in order to avoid feeling unsettled. Don’t let others saddle you with guilt that isn’t warranted. LIBRA (Sept 24-Oct 23)  Make sure all of your travel and driver’s documents are in proper order. You will not be able to contain your emotions this week. Your ability to take hold of a situation will surely bring you popularity and leadership. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22)  If they’re really interested, they’ll wait. Deception is probable if you don’t use discrimination. Concentrate on work and on making money. Don’t think the worst if you hear something negative about your partner.
